How good is Orcish Bowmasters?I'm getting back into modern after a 7 year break, and I am going to play mono black lessons. I see decks run anywhere from 1-4. With how pricy they are (especially compared to the rest of the deck if you already have lands), I was wondering if I should bother getting a full set.

If I remember correctly, they worked together on foiling techniques in the late 90's, something like early MtG foils borrowed some of their processing pipeline

Do you guys think MH4 is coming in 2028? They didn't announce it in the 2027 schedule so it's not happening next year.
Call me dumb but I like MH setsThey1. are In Universe, revisiting a lot of classic planes2. bring back a lot of classic mechanics 3. experiment with mechanics a lot4. have cards that are relevant and actually playableCompared to a set like Capeslop, where I don't care about a single character, 99% of cards are draft chaff and the mechanics are basic as shit, it's not even a contest
>>98405872Agree, i hope they so them for Pioneer
>>98405851no. no need for mh sets when the standard sets are as strong as mh1 was. power creep and the abandonment of standard has obviated the need for direct to Modern sets.>>98405872>Call me dumb but I like MH setsI accept your invitation

>>98405872>have cards that are relevant and actually playableto me, this is the problem, because making a card "playable" in the non-rotating formats is most easily accomplished by making making it some crazy garbage that kills you fastcompare:>reference to an iconic design that's literally a straight downgrade to a card that was already legal in every format modern horizons is in, but hey maybe you'll have fun in limited or put it in a cubeto>is half of the name of a vintage deck, and it's incredibly obvious why from the very instant you read ittoo much of modern horizons is dedicated to referencing stuff that is only iconic because it is strongtime spiral is better (and don't get me wrong, there's definitely cards in time spiral that have their head up their own rear end) simply because it was beholden to being balanced for standard (at a time when standard had a reasonable power level)
>>98405899it's okay I still love you I just think you're easily pandered to
>>98405872I like them a lot too, I'm not by any means a huge limited player but I have very fond memories of drafting MH1 and MH2 on MTGO and I drafted the shit out of MH3 when it was released on arena. I also enjoy all the ways they explore new designs as well as reference older cards. What I don't enjoy is what they do to Modern, it's one thing if we get a handful of playable cards, it's another when you can make a top tier deck entirely off of MH cards.
>>98402403Didn't this already exist?I guess it wasn't updated from 3.5e until now. Does WoW have a big anniversary next year?Since someone at WotC said that all the UB sets will be for anniversaries of those IPs,so maybe a full 40k set since it's 40th anniversary is next year
>>98406002That's true, but unfortunately it's one of the risks of being free to design whatever they want however they want. For every Ocelot Pride, there's a whatever the fuck this is: if they made every single rare/mythic janky and niche, people would rightfully bitch because it would feel more like an unset than an interesting set for experienced players. So some cards have to be super Spike-coded while others are for people who wanna fuck around, it's inevitable.

>>98406553A long time ago (early in the 1900s) the first world countries (mostly the Anglo sphere) found out that the more "advanced" their nation is, the less their people breed. This is an issue because their financial theories require the population to continuously grow.To solve this they turn to immigration, and a lot of culture reshaping was done to ensure people do not lash out against the consequences of their policing. The word "diversity" simply means "everything that ensures our population never ages".Well, MtG is one of those consequences.

I really feel bad for those who want to enjoy real paper Magic (not commander) but their local LGS are dead or only have commander nights.I play pauper every Wednesday and we have at least 16~20 players everyweek, sometimes reaching up to 30. >>98409604>>98409609You bros should come to Nebraska. We have weekly hog roasts where we play Collector (A format where only special treatment cards are allowed) on picnic tables while we crack packs of Universes Beyond looking for serialized cards. You can easily avoid Commander here!

>>98409416>I really feel bad for those who want to enjoy real paper Magic (not commander) but their local LGS are dead or only have commander nights.I don't have to feel bad for them. I am one. It's a 45 minute drive to the nearest LGS that hosts anything other than Commander. I know Nebraska is booming but it's shocking just how little WotC cares about sustaining and maintaining non-Commander formats.
Good night /mtg/.
I went to a modern tournament in 2024 that had about 9 people there including me. I didn't go back because I simply didn't care to. Rather worryingly when I was organizing my stuff the other day I found a near fully built temur prowess deck that I don't remember buying so I guess at one point I was going to give it another shot but apparently forgot about it.
>>98409741>I went to a modern tournament in 2024 that had about 9 people there including me. I didn't go back because I simply didn't care to.Honestly, the formats are all just degrading to the point of it being very hard to motivate myself to get out and play. Combine that with the endless creep of how far I have to drive to find somewhere that actually hosts non-EDH events, and it genuinely feels like the game is rotting into a husk.
>>98409741>>98409756This is why we should fuse /mtg/ and /edhg/, the other formats are dead.
>>98409763>This is why we should fuse /mtg/ and /edhg/, the other formats are dead./mmg/ already withered into dust long ago, devoured by /mtg/ just so it could survive. I don't see why we shouldn't just let this shell of a thread die too.
>>98409676"Magic the Gathering General" includes all Magic the Gathering forms of play, of which EDH is one (and the most popular by far). If you'd like a more exclusive general you're welcome to revive the Standard/Modern thread.... lol
>>98409770>you're welcome to revive the Standard/Modern thread.... lolShows how truly dead the game is, in spirit, that all the separate format threads that used to thrive have basically no hope of existing nowadays.
>>98409770>>98409769Based and redpilled.
>>98409756>it being very hard to motivate myself to get out and playI'm also experiencing this. I have a couple of half built Legacy decks and others that could use an update and just require some fakes to finish up but I don't really see a point in completing them and feel like I'd get better use of my money elsewhere. The population where I live is too low to justify going all in on Premodern as we only play that once a month.
>>98409780>The population where I live is too low to justify going all in on Premodern as we only play that once a month.I mean, for me it's ANY format. Even the shit ones, Pioneer, Standard, who cards. I'd just want one format where the gameplay was decent enough to warrant getting out and playing, plus healthy enough so I don't have to drive an hour to find games. Finding even a single format where I feel my time is well spent playing it is an impossible ask these days. When someone who loves the game is thinking about playing it, and the prospect of sitting in a chair and watching a wall sounds like a better use of my time, something has gone wrong.
>>98409791Yeah that's more or less how I feel about it too. People should want to do things and something is wrong if they don't. I have genuinely been enjoying Premodern more than Legacy as of late but due to the playerbase usually being older, it's difficult to coordinate game days when so many people have other responsibilities that they have to work around
I you actually loved the game, you would play the most popular format, it's as simple as that, really.
>>98409826It's one thing for life to get in the way.I've had decent success getting people together to draft custom sets. It's been way easier than traditional formats at least.Leads me to believe that, if the game were good, people would make the time.

Sloppy play is the norm because it takes like 25 minutes before it's your turn again and everyone else barely knows how their own cards work let alone how they work with the other 3 players cards.

Went over to a friend's house today and drafted one of the most powerful cube decks I've ever had in my cube (legacy cube, only pre-2019 cards). The combination of emissary's ploy (I can play 2 drops of any color) and hymn of the wilds (my first creature each turn is 1 less, but no instants/sorceries) led to some truly unique but insane spots, like turn 1 dark confidant.I ended up never playing a single game on the play though (played 7) - the only opponent who took me to three games had power play, so he always started on the play.

I dont get the bitching and moaning about edh. Do we go back to standard being the premiere format? FnM was fucking shitty cancer, where you got to drop $400-$600 on a meta deck every few months. If you were silly enough to get into modern, you got to spend more to buy a brand new deck because all standard cards were shit. Nobody played extended, and even fewer played vintage/legacy.Commander should be the best format, because it has the highest probability for fun. However, this was grown in an environment where the cards weren't made with commander in mind, so it had a charming jankiness to it. Now that cards are designed for it, commander has become the new Standard, i.e., shit.

>>98411014Tbh this may be the healthiest way to look at the game going forward. Let EDH be the baby containment zone, and play your favorite real format. I think we're just coming out of a turbulent period where EDH was the only stable format because it's held together by vibes and pixie dust, but as other formats and LGS establish some stability we can get the real Magic backAll I can say is do the work and if you want pauper/mdern at your store, talk to the owners, set it up, and show up every week. Make friends. Build it. EDH has the advantage of being a beer and pretzels kitchen table board game than can also show up to LGS. A proper Pauper/Modern scene isn't happening unless you make it happen.
>>98411014>If you were silly enough to get into modern, you got to spend more to buy a brand new deck because all standard cards were shit.I spent like 15 straight years with the same Modern deck and barely had to make any changes lmfao, the fuck are you even talking about?

>>98412324there was a time when commander was this special homebrew format that we just played together with friends. we all wanted to try make the jankiest shit possible with our collection of cards as a form of self-expression or a flex among ourselves on top of it being an alternative format. and then Wizards decided to put their grubby mitts on them and double down on edh as one of their "official" formats nowadays. Now Commander EDH starts getting even a competitive nofunallowed scene endorsed by wizards themselves and starts making cards to be used specifically for edh. to me, it ruined the appeal of the format since it's practically the new Standard now and everybody's looking to copy the most meta decks off edhrec whenever they can. also when wizards starts regulating which card is legal in this freakin homebrew format, that's where it lost me. I guess Cube is now the unofficial homebrew format now since it plays like a personal draft format with curated cards

>>98412378That's why you banned Rhystic Study, right? Because it was a clear example of a card that would undermine the "just build for fun" spirit of the format by being an obvious must-include that would warp the game around whether or not you could run it.
>>98412324Standard was always a shit format, arguably worse now that standard is extended. The real move was to Modern. Problem with Modern is you couldn't play jank. If you wanted to not go 0-4 for the night, you had to play tier 1, or at least tier 1.5. Forget silly shit like treefolk tribal or whatever. Ultrasweatlords whose only competitive outlet is magic love it. Pauper is a cheap version of Modern. Premodern is an unc version of modern. Vintage was never going to take off, too costly.I used to play singleton/highlander/other jank formats, because thats where you often got to play weird or fun cards. Commander gobbled those formats up, and now reigns supreme, because it turns out more people want a game of leisure than tourney grinding. I think it's great.

While hiking in the hills, we discovered a small cave behind a waterfall that wasn't marked on his map. Curious, we carefully navigated the slick rocks and stepped inside. Imagine our surprise when we found an old man meditating in the shadows! His robes were ragged and his beard wispy and white, like cobwebs. We knelt before him and asked who he was. He opened his tired eyes and said: "The only Pioneer player in China."
