That actually sounds like a reasonable question to ask at the table.
I think mermaids would be a cute option but most games aren't sea bass.

Bunch of beast folk.
Various pseudo-elementals, including men made from metal assembled into organic structures.
Various sorts of truly reanimated (biological needs returned, most if not all biological functions restored) corpses.

Cambions. I have limits on attacks they can make while flying though, but they can clear that away at high level. They definitely have a disguise ability though, and a demon beam attack that is functionally a fire bolt cantrip without components.

I like animal-human hybrid people of many flavours, obvious examples being catgrills, werewolves, pig-orcs, etc.
I'm partial to frog people in particular, they have a naturally whimsical quality about them.

I like having gnomes (explicitly related do dwarves), lizard people, a few different ocean-based races. Maybe cat people, too (they contrast well with the lizard folk).
>>
>>98403126 (me)
Make lizard people ancient and wise (perhaps amongst the oldest races, just strangely irrelevant in the current day, though they're still around), cat folk more in-the-present-moment, traders, hustlers, opportunists.
Gnomes I like a bit more merry and fey, illusionists, with crafts generally more precise and delicate than dwarven. I feel that as long as you keep hobbits explicitly related to humans, the three "short races" can be distinct enough (humans and their cousing hobbits, dwarves and gnomes).

But with the lizards and cats being another duo, I wonder if the elves should get someone. Perhaps whatever little groups of true fey and angels remain in the world? But it'd be better to lump angels and fey into a trio with demons... Or just keep elves by themselves, it makes them (fittingly) stand out even more.

Blemmye
>>
>>98402101
Various kemonomimi races most prominently, but like half the people responding have answered some variant of that, so they're not particularly unique. I also have bird people but they're basically quasi-kemonomimi so I'd lump them in with the first group.

I've toyed with the idea of sentient golem things (not in the sense of "literally just a human carved out of stone that can move somehow" but rather literally a pile of mossy rocks that is magically held together in a vaguely humanoid shape) and ensouled robots, those are probably some of the more unique and standout ideas I've had. Basically all the other races are just stolen or heavily derived from other properties or popular tropes or are ripped conceptually from vidya (a couple Stellaris species portraits that I liked, for example, that I used as the basis for some races or concepts for them).

The Shek. They're a diminutive humanoid that were designed as humans 2.0 by old kings because they were sick of having to maintain the mind control satellite.

They're similar to coyotes in that they maintain a self limiting population based around 'brood mothers' which spawn them through eggs in caverns. They are hormonally controlled by the mothers. Old kings die out thanks to humans 1.0 and the satellite before they hard code brood mother artificiality, meaning they can make more. But the brood mothers are hard-coded to not like each other.

The dregs are sapient, but pheromonally controlled by the mothers and are born with the same nature, though personalities develop differently due to circumstance. The mothers are wildly different from one another and require DNA from humans to develop.

Their empire is called the padishah and the capital is basically a prison for subsidiary mothers and ruled by the Baraz, who rules by sending all the other tribes to the reaches of the empire and keeping the capital Qazvin populated by its own tribe.

They're in a sort of race war with humans due to different reproduction. Humans are exponential, the Shek are ultimately limited by their biology. Ruling a vast stretch of territory by dusting command letters with pheromones ('obey') is very difficult and they won't outnumber humanity forever, especially when other broodmothers outside the padishah will throw their lot in with human nations to escape the gilded cage of Qazvin.

They're possessed of wildly different aesthetic preferences from tribe to tribe so cities with several will look ridiculous and chaotic.

They're creepy to baseline humans and mirror a lot of behaviors, but wrongly and have no sense of etiquette or real decency, they're widely hated.

We're using 5e, I recycled the stat block from Loxodon with a few modifications (no trunk, "carnivorous compulsion" from 2023 Tome of Beasts)

Powerful build, natural armor, and serenity, but they're limited in what equipment they can wear, since their mouth, nose and eyes would be covered up by anything worn over the chest.

Mostly just used them for a few gimmick recurring NPCs. None of the players are playing as one.

"Dwarves, elves, and orcs" is just what I call the tough guys, the nimble guys, and the strong guys. I've got a setting where "the dwarves" are insect people, not because they live underground, but because they have natural armor and can't bleed to death.

Starborn, also known as Star Children. They're basically weird eldritch beings made of star stuff that just sort of pop up on the core setting's world (it's my own modern fantasy system), and adapt to whatever society they end up in. They're fucking weridos.
>>
>>98402101
Snoids, a race of almost exclusively male humanoids with typically bleach-white skin, though some appear as the ugliest shades of brown imagineable. They're defined by having seemingly grotesque proportions and exaggerated facial features that denote specific family lines, but despite their initially frightening appearance, they are actually fairly a simple (if a bit obnoxious and loud) people who have obsessive tendencies towards niche interests, just don't get on their bad side.

Mostly beastfolk right now. They're a lot easier to make grounded PC races. I've been wanting to avoid "human but elemental" races like Genasi or Tiefling to represent an earlier world, which has only had its first real decline of a great civilization before. It also sells my main influence, Shining Force, better.
The one I'm most proud of right now are the pecorids, sheeple who love to congregate into tight-knit, often-isolated communities. While they are most often found in religious communities and monasteries, you can also see pecorids being loyal assistants to fledgling city-state lords and extremist rebel groups as well. Anywhere there's an in-group, you can see a pecorid trying to embody its ideals. It's also of note that the setting doesn't have any animals that beastfolk take direct inspiration from. As a result, any wooly clothing is actually made from sheared pecorids.
There's also the squirlek. They are a race of tree-dwelling inventors who rely on ropes-and-pulley technology to get around their home. Some of their most recent inventions are the crossbow and a drachma-operated water dispensers. Some taverns use the water dispenser to dispense glasses of watered-down wine or ale for a cheaper price than a normal mug.

I enjoy running into your frogmanposts, frogmanposter
Not really a race I'd include as my first choice, but the whimsy is nice

Also, you could probably do a dragonborn and give them different abilities based on their colors

All of them. Ban myself from using Tolkien races.

Same here, you got many options with animal races, I mainly use feline and canine races being the majority of the time

I like using them as whimsical critters that fill the role for gnomes and halflings, mainly tagging along with adventurers as helpers most of the time or they join gangs of thieves and bandits

Mythologically accurate selkies, furfag sealman selkies or mermaid selkies.
Im running them a mixture of the first and the last, pretty girls&dudes with lower seal bodies that can turn into normal people

One setting has them as simply pale-skinned, aquatically-adapted humanoids with exceptional physical prowess but actually less magical capability than humans. The other one is closer to traditional selkies, fae creatures who can shapeshift into seal form but whose magical abilities are tied to possession of their magic pelt. They live in reclusive communities and have a poor relationship with true water-breathing merfolk, and I've worked in a little Siren DNA by making them musically inclined.

Hengeyokai, otherwise known as shifters, beastkin, etc depending on the region. I dislike typical beastfolk because they create a worldbuilding problem of having to establish a genetically distinct population of animal people for any animal person you want to represent. Cat people, dog people, pig people, sugar glider people, axolotl people… It gets to be a problem from a population standpoint especially in a setting that isn’t supposed to feature them as a major faction. So here’s what I did
>Hengeyokai are animals that undergo a mental breakdown powerful enough to give them a human level of sapience via a sort of enlightenment. This means they aren’t really a species, they’re an event that happens to regular animals very rarely.
>Theyre shapeshifters that can exist at any point along the furry scale at any point. Giant wolf that turns into a man? Hengeyokai. Girl with bird wings? Hengeyokai. It’s very versatile.
>Hengeyokai have a natural revulsion towards animals of their own species due to it triggering an uncanny valley effect, much like seeing a naked homeless man who can’t speak.
>Since they aren’t a species unto themselves I don’t have to build factions around them and their family functionally doesn’t exist. This means they’re very lonely and don’t really fit in anywhere.

In blue rose you can just be a psychic animal and one of the options it gives stats for is a dolphin.
Always wondered what a game where one player is playing a psychic dolphin knight would actually be like.

Big foots
Not-vampires
gargoyle flying people
Jet black skinned cultivator people with weird hands
little people who jump and do parkour really really good because their bones are partially titanium and they got a really high strength to weight ratio (who were partially inspired by troll dolls if I am totally honest)
Monkey people space aliens
Ball joint doll inspired masked spider ninja people
Taboo artificial super solder people
The people who's parents shoved massive amounts of magic into them as babies in a ritual until they became basically a different race from normal humans
and extradimensional werewolf half spirit people

Plus some of the more standard stuff like goblins, dragon people, and totallynotelves in both short and tall flavors.
