Traveling. Brought a couple of old WDs with me so I can really soak them in. This one has Advanced Space Crusade hype inside (hence the cover), how to make a custom Ork vehicle, how to make fantasy/mordheim type buildings out of cardstock

The custom Ork vehicle is weirdly painted with some Khorne chaos symbols alongside the Ork ones. This detail isn't addressed anywhere.

Is this stuff just a modified wood stain?
I think this was an old miniature speedpainting technique.
I'm not sure how popular it still is or if it is really rendered "obsolete" instead of "old school" where obsolete is what you don't want to return to, but old school is what one can return to for the nostalgia, or just to try something new that still works.

I always thought that the ArmyPainter quickshade dips are just kept around for the older hobbyists coming back and people like me feeling the old good new bad hipster mentality creeping in.

So for anybody here from the era of wood stain shading models, is it still a very good speedpainting method of getting armies out quickly in the current year of this post being made?
And if the ArmyPainter quickshade dips are just "unmodified" woodstain instead of what might be "thin staining" to me, then what is the closest approximate to dark tone dip I can get in this accursed country I call Canada?

Because because in Rogue Trader there were Khorne worshiping Orks.

If it's like AP's typical washes, it should just be a giant pot of thinned-down acrylic paint. Obviously it's still usable if you don't mind a holistic solution to shading, the modern culture of speed painting otherwise is using Contrast/Speed/Xpress/etc Paints (different brands and all) that are basically a base + wash applied by brush.

The safety says it is an oil based product.

So it isn't a pot of acrylic paint. I think Vallejo sells that, but I'm not too sure about it because I read that the new reformulated Vallejo paints bubble a lot or bubble too easily.

It's basically a just combo wash/gloss varnish.

Thanks. If there isn't really a better option I'll stick with acrylics. I read that Vallejo's dipping washes are terrible, but i'm not sure if they're used incorrectly or genuinely awful.

Fair. It says some drying oils are involved which I'd assume the formulation is different to make the whole dip thing work better, and/or has a bit of varnish in it.

>I read that the new reformulated Vallejo paints bubble a lot or bubble too easily
Stuff with an updated label comes to mind. Some of them are still usable but the one Pale Sand that people used to dickride was a pain to work with in my experience.

Do scans exist of Forge World's Death Korps and their vehicles?
>>

it might have made sense twenty years ago when you could buy a tin of woodstain for £2/£3 from Wilko. If all you wanted was to hit your models with earthshade, it would do the same thing and give them a satin varnish. I feel you'd be better off making your own oil washes to be honest, unless you wanted to do it for retro reasons.
