Of the local historicals, the scene is sadly dominated by Bolt Action, and the guy who organizes things is so uninterested in history that he doesn't even bother justifying why two forces are fighting. "It's a game, just roll dice and have fun" is his stance. There's one or two guys interested in Barons' War besides me, so that's something. It's not /hwg/, but we do have a really great Battletech scene that makes up for the meh historicals.

Most likely nonexistent or really good at hiding from fantasy and sci-fi enjoying normies like me.

Should I look into stls of early imperial Romans or get victrix Romans? I’m not sure what the process or programs I can use to make decals fitting for printed Roman shields.
>>
>>98405249
Perfectly printing decals to match your printed minis sounds like a hassle. Even owning a printer, if i were you I'd skip that work and just buy Victrix minis.

I'm still waiting for that Victrix irish vs WGA Irish comparison anon promised me way back.

From what I can tell from faceache, mainly GW - which I don't mind, but not as an exclusive 'girlfriend' iyswim. I lost contact with my old historicals group of mainly literal boomers because of life reasons (couldn't make club night any more, bleh) and drifted away from gaming altogether bar the occasional attempt at a FLGS and friends (but work has shattered that particular group too).
That said, I've drifted into a modelling crowd who seem at least Bolt Action (and 40k) curious. My WW2 stuff was all 1/72 (if i could even find what box it's in, in the attic. Or possibly garage) but for the sake of willingness and fostering enthusiasm I wouldn't mind redoing in 28mm if need be.
On a vaguely related note, I feel the urge to wear sandals again and keep finding myself looking at Warlord's Hannibal set, for ease of use. At the very least, I reckon there are at least 3, maybe 4 DBA armies I could get out of it, which comes in handy to spread the word, as it were. Not exactly my period (I'm more Imperial) but a start is a start.

I'm looking for a kitchen table ancient skirmish game, preferably no more than 30-35 minis per player - the fewer the better.

When it comes to minis, I have a rather nice selection of minis for Classical Greece cities and Alexander’s army, some random late Republic Romans and Germanic tribesmen as well. I don't feel like starting yet another army anytime soon so I would rather play a game that supports at least some of those factions.

I really liked Mortal Gods but I grew tired with custom dice, unit cards and all this kind of shit and gubbins. I want something more "pure" and traditional when it comes to tools and accessories.
SPQR is fun and simple despite being rough around the edges. It gets bonus points for a wide selection of units and factions. I don't see it as a system good enough to still play it in 3 or 5 years though. Most of my minis are based on round bases and having 4 different facing arcs is quite annoying.
I gave SAGA a chance as well but it lost me for the same reason as Mortal Gods. It's surprisingly hard to have new players hooked up whenever they see something more complex than basic dice and 2-3 types of tokens/markers. Can't blame them though.

I know I could simply brew up all the profiles in Open Combat but I want to play an actual historical game rather than alternative wargame that happens to have a profile builder baked in.

Imagine accusing SAGA of not being historical enough for /hwg/ only to recommend a game that feels and plays like One Page Rules with 90% of contents missing. It is a fun little game to play with normie friends, rolling dice for the first time in their lives but it has nothing to do with historical wargaming except for the units names.
SAGA while "making absolutely zero attempt at historical gameplay" in your opinion, introduces selection of units that are supposed to represent the stereotypical view on their respective nations, utilises rules and formations that are meant to mimic the iconic characteristics of said armies and comes with historical characters for extra fluff.
I'm actually baffled, how shamelessly retarded one can be to shit on a game while vaguely mentioning aLL ThOsE BeTTeR GaMeS only to not be able to name 1 (one) game that is presumably better when asked multiple times.
I despise you, you fucking elemental of the Dunning-Kruger effect.

Played my first game of ADLG. I was given some 1066 Normans to go up against 1400s Burgundians.

Burgundians had some cannons which I mildly threatened with some skirmishing cavalry but made sure to stay out of range of.
I hid a bunch of heavy armor, elite spearmen in the woods and sprung them against his mixed pike/bow units, with the resulting melee collapsing his center. His mounted knights chewed up my heavy cavalry but took too long to do it. I killed enough of his foot soldiers and ransacked his HQ to take the win.

What models do you recommend for Greathelm? WGA Barons' War foot knights, Victrix, Fireforge Teutons/Templar infantry or something else?
>>
>>98407495
Really nigga? You just naturally assume everyone sharing an opinion is the same person?
>>
>>98407534
WGA sells 24 foot knights for 35€, that's 1,45€ per mini.
Victrix asks 42€ for 32 dudes, so 1,30€ per dude.
FireForge wants 30€ for 28 lads, that's 1,07€ per lad.
Now, quality and quantity. How historical you want to go?
WGA is okay, they are decent but not spectacular. 24 knights is more than enough for Greathelm.
Victrix is the best on this list. Amazing selection of fancy bits with enormous catalogue of extra parts and decals available BUT that's the most expensive pack and you have to ask yourself a question if you need so many knights.
FireForge is a sleeper here. Their minis are lanky and the worst when it comes to sculpts quality (not terrible though) BUT that is their advantage in a way. You can slap on them any old bits you find around and they won't look out of place. Their Templar/Teuton Infantry boxes come with 8 foot knights and 20 foot sergeants so unlike with WGA and Victrix, you don't have to buy another box in case you want to to field something less armoured.

Non-existent. Bar a couple close friends, I have to travel around 80kms to get some extra people.
That said, I got a breakthrough. Not one, not two, but three people interested in running some games of Missile Threat. I need not to fuck this up. I mean, they're good people that can endure the tedium of Napoleonics, I can sell them the glory of the skies.
I'm kind of wondering if I should run a baseline Vietnam scenario or going full meme with Lybians in the Med. Everyone likes Tomcats.
>>
>>98407575
Really, the FireForfe boxes come with that few knights? A shame, I really like their Teuton look. I know there's extra bits for Victrix models to make them more Teutonic.
WGA seems like the most sensible choice, as I don't think I need 32 models for a 12-model game.
>>98407586
Fantasy look is not an issue, but 10 knights per box when I would need 12 is a detriment. Even if I could supply some other random "knightly" models I already have.
>>
>>98407986
I say go for the ones you find most pleasing, and sell the frames you don't need. People on FB and the like will probably let you offload any mint new frames, especially of victrix and WGA stuff,
>>
>>98407534
The guy who writes Greathelm has said he built the game around the WGA sprue. All the options on that sprue are in the game, and a lot of the options on other WGA kits also have rules, like the polearms that the Serjeants kit adds. Since there's four sprues of six, the WGA kit is effectively a 4 player starter set for it, since you can give other sprues to your friends to suck them into the game.

I've heard the victrix minis are also really good. Once thing I'd recommend is looking into one of the warband options that gets you a bigger force. WGA has the Barons' War Retinue and Victrix has the Medieval Warband. Greathelm has rules for medium and light armored knights, and the kits for less armored troops are perfect for that, plus buying one of those gives you all the options you need to play Barons' War or some other medieval wargame too. I personally started with a box of foot knights and very quickly escalated so now my medieval warband is a bunch of WGA stuff plus some Frostgrave kits.
>>
The Northstar plastic Hussite war knights look so fucking good. Sculpted by Matt Bickley who's behind some of the best sculpts on the mini market. Fucking ace.
>>

Ya. I don't quite understand Al the details from just one game, but I like the general feel of it. Opposed roll combat, and unit movement and control is granular enough to be compelling without feeling like a slog. I liked having cavalry that was obligate to charge the enemy inside a certain range unless I spent resources holding them back. Lots of little modifier details.

All the minis are from the guy showing it to me, but since he printed everything he's willing to print out an army. I'll probably receive it end of this month and paint it up over a couple of weekends to have my own force

You just have to find one or two dedicated people to play with and cherish the few games with them. Every time I think I need to play more games I go and try to play a game of TOW at the LGS and I remember how fuckong God awful the rules are and how repugnant the Warhammer community is. Every time I leave feeling like it's actually better to play rare historicals a couple times a year than to play Warhammer as frequently as one wants. Truly a quality vs quantity situation

I've only played with my friends, and not public games yet so I can't comment on the LGS experience.

On a different and hopefully more positive note, I am curious about ArmyPainter's quickshade dips.
Specifically the dark tone dip.
From searching I've seen results say it is woodstain, but I'm not sure if it is modified woodstain to be less staining than the regular stuff.
And I'm also not sure if wood staining is still a very good method of getting miniatures painted quickly for the table like historical army miniatures.

Supposedly this is an old mini painting technique and I'm not sure if it holds up these days or not.
Anybody here from those days of woodstain shading miniatures able to comment on these products? If good then I'd appreciate recommended dark tone equivalents in Canada that produce similar results. Hopefully in less drying time as I want to ultra matte airbrush that gloss down as soon as possible.

We are a city of 1.5 million spread over quite a wide geographic area, I have:

-1 club within 10 min drive, quite small, around 5 - 6 regulars, play things like Mordheim, Warmachine, WW1 air combat, FoW, Battletech, some 40K or AoS.

-1 club within 30 min drive - my main haunt, around 15 - 20 regulars, mostly play historical games, DBA/DBM/DBR, FoW, Charles Grant's Battle!, Ostfront, the odd naval or air combat game, and a few WRG or older 1970s/1980s Cold war games, and recently a Kriegsspiel game.

-1 club within 30 min drive, I've never been, but looks like they do DBMM, Saga, Fow, FoW, Crossfire.

Then there's a bunch of Warhammer shops and probably some 40K / WHFB clubs around that I'm not aware of. At least one 40K club with like 800 members on their facebook group, but no idea how many regulars they have.

I'm tinkering with some ancient naval rules at the moment, aiming for something rules-lite that will represent the tactics and different nations of 480 - ~394 BC. Stand-in "Minis" adapted from juniorgeneral.org images

A pagan Zoroastrian homosexual Greek military instructor and priest of the imperial cult was teaching a class on Diocletian, known persecutor of Christians.

"Before the class begins, you must get on your knees and worship Diocletian and accept that he was the most wise and virtuous being the world has ever known, even greater than Jesus Christ!"

At this moment, a brave, patriotic, Christian champion who had been proclaimed imperator by his men 1500 times and understood the necessity of just war and fully supported all military decision made by the Roman Empire stood up and held a document.

"What is this?"

The arrogant professor smirked quite Greekly and smugly replied "the edict on maximum prices, you stupid Christian. The most brilliant document ever written"

"Wrong. If it is so brilliant, why is it disobeyed even on the pain of death? Meanwhile Christians willingly face death in obedience to the Bible! "

The instructor was visibly shaken, and dropped his chalk and copy of de re militari. He stormed out of the room crying those Greek crocodile tears. The same tears Greeks cry for the "legitimate heirs of Alexander" when they jealously tried to claw justly earned land from the deserving Romans. There is no doubt that at this point our instructor wished he had pulled himself up by his bootstraps and become more than a sophist. He wished so much that he had a sword to fall upon in embarrassment, but he himself had handed it over to Rome in subjugation!

The students applauded and all accepted Jesus as their lord and savior. A dove named "Paraklete" flew into the room and perched atop the imperial standard and shed a tear on the chalk. The Lord's Prayer was read several times, and Jesus himself showed up and enacted religious freedom across the empire.

The instructor lost his titles and was fired the next day. He died of the gay plague and was decimated for good measure.

You'd know this if you had any real male relationships and weren't codependant on your wife because you lack male friends.

I'm looking for miniatures to play Italian wars/condottiere actions, and I'm only coming up with Perry's 1450-1500 line. Is there any other plastic sets that you'd recommend? Perry kits are great but I'm trying to find alternatives to mix it up a little.

Seems there is a distinct lack of late late medieval times miniatures on the market for some reason, as it's not quite pike & shotte-era yet but also not chivalrous era anymore either.

It's funny when people ask for miniature recommendations and then immediately exclude 90% of historical miniature ranges right off the bat. Why the fixation on plastic? This behavior is sign of Warhammerism

Due to being europoor and needing large amount of models. Ordering from good old England got super expensive after Brexit and especially after those new temu-tariffs, having extra 3€ added to each line item gets really expensive really fast. If I can get 40 models for 30€ in a single box, instead of paying 5+€ for each it's a no-brainer for anyone with limited amount of money and wish to get a game in this year, instead of waiting for years to amass necessary amount of models.

If you can point me to metal range that I can get models from EU-area with comparable prices to plastic boxes, please do. I have nothing against metals. I'd be happy to consider other scales than 28mm also, haven't looked into those yet.

What wargame does what Black Powder do but better? I do like how wide the selection of conflicts and armies is but I'm not really impressed with the rules themselves. They feel pointlessly bloated while not really bringing anything distinctive to the table. The way the rulebook is written is simply atrocious, layout is not really well-thought-out and forces you to flip pages all the time.

Valour and Fortitude.

I used this stuff to quickly paint some zombies a few years ago. It's fine, provided you use an aggressive dull coat on the model afterwards, but it's not really appreciably faster than just a basic base/wash/highlight assembly line when compared to the quality difference.

I do like The Army Painter generally, though.
>>
>>98426221
>I do like The Army Painter generally, though.
I do too. Especially their washes and I learned about mixing their washes with speedpaint medium. It makes me wonder why wash medium exists, but I would be surprised if speedpaint medium mixing with their washes is less popular than wash medium mixing with their acrylic washes. Only thing I don't like about AP is that they put mixing balls inside. I'm sure they use stainless steel balls that are safe in acrylics, but there's always a chance of getting a bad ball and then the paint rusts up. Even if rare.

It's made by the Perrys so the rules are set up for a box of minis to make one full unit. To make a full regiment you need like 4-5 boxes, 160-200 dudes and it costs what, £80 to 100? Meanwhile in Warhammer you spend £80 and get a box of 6 guys.

The only "problem" is if you struggle to paint that many troops. However if that's a problem for you then consider a different hobby! Or just half the unit sizes

Perry boxes are essentially set up for their ruleset, with one box representing a battalion, with six companies of six man bases plus a command base.

You don't have to use 40 guys, it's just a suggestion in the rules, but it's intended for awe inspiring battles with big beautiful armies. The suggestion in the rules is actually 24-40 or something like that, because not every battalion was full strength

I just like the proportions.
Seems like a good opportunity for me to maybe feel some motivation to git gud at Blender.

Man I like those models, and Kevin Dallimore's paintjobs on those. I think those are probably more like alt history models from seeing the drum magazines. Maybe the drums were just easier to do and then they got slapped with the sci-fi alt history label. They're still very cool to look though.
I found those from a Xenos Rampant book which is why I mentioned the above.

Empress Miniatures and Athena Miniatures both have ranges for the Chechen wars, though I wouldn't say either look particularly 'cold'. Nevermind the Billhooks is a great game made for late medieval and early Renaissance and has specific rules and list for Italian Wars. There is an ECW supplement as well. The command and control structure is really well done and it's one of my favorite command system in all of wargaming. The game was originally meant for the war of the roses and it based off of the Sharp Practice system.

Can anyone recommend a good blackpowder capable / late renaissance through early moderm to pulp era skirmish rules set?

>Sharp Practice... figure count is high, lots of markers to facilitate tracking. Most realistic immersion and scale but a lot of stopping and starting like cricket.
>A Song of Drums and Shakos... really Napoleonics only, preferable midrange figure count of say 15-25, two stats offloads some screwball traits stuff, nice simple push your luck activation, kind of bland and so many iterations with the firearm era ones being less stable
>Wiley FFOL: great pointless simple heroic system marred by tracking counters in excess and weird playing card activation that makes tactical choices a bit too random

Same goes for other skirmish games in general.

Apologies for the wait anon, been a very busy month for me and my hobby time has suffered. Please see pic related, with WA painted and Victrix unpainted.

The Victrix sculpts are a little taller (but easily within normal human variance) but very similar scaling wise. I did some head and arm swaps between the kits and with a little sculpting work for things like slings being loaded with two hands it worked a treat between the two kits. The sling stone bag on the leftmost and rightmost slingers are from a Victrix kit and works fairly well, for example

The Victrix box has some advantages over WA, the main ones being two handed axes and a few armoured bodies on the sprue. While I like the inclusion of sashes/shoulder worn scarves, as seen on the mini third from left, there is a lack of broaches on cloaks, which the WA kit is really good for. The lack of body variety, particularly with three of the bodies in the Victrix box having a sculpted raised arm, means that you are slightly more limited on spear/javelin positioning, but the WA sprue has most of their shield arms sculpted to the torso in a lowered position, so that's not ideal either. I personally prefer the WA wolfhounds to the Victrix ones, as I prefer the faces. A few of the Victrix sculpts also require you to glue a leg on to the bottom of the torso, which gives some minor variance but is annoying. Victrix has no bare torsos, but has better sculpts for the "waistcoats" than WA.

The Victrix kit lacks the big oval shields that WA provides, but does provide a few different small shields, one similar to a Scottish targe and one with studs. As several of the Victrix cloaks are also two parts you can get more fine control over their look compared to WA, but again, only a few of them have broaches. The one handed weapon options on both sets are fairly similar, with Victrix having a few more shillelagh sculpts, but lacks the "just throw a rock at them" arms available to the Wargames Atlantic Irish.

I'm wanting to play rank and flank ancients, but when I look at the popular rules like Hail Caesar the army you're expected to build is huge and the table you're expected to play on massive.
In Hail Caesar specifically, I would want to play what that game considers 1 division per side. But if I were to use those rules, the game would be over really fast because it's designed for way more units. So, are there any ancients rules that are designed similarly for big multibased units - as opposed to Warhammer style individual basing - but have greater granularity for smaller armies?

I think overall the Victrix sculpt quality is nicer than WA, but yeah, some slightly odd poses and LOTS of mould lines. Gun to my head I think I (sorry WA) slightly lean towards Victrix because of that, even if the WA kit has loads of bits I prefer like the bare chests and the dogs. The boxes really compliment each other, and if I was going to make a SAGA army or a similar size force I'd just buy one box of each and do a few swaps between them to smooth out the minor differences.

I know this is an older post, but I've been thinking about this recently.

Army Painter updated their paint range recently, but still use the same quickshade formula. (I cant tell difference between new and old bottles.) The, "problem," is that the quickshade formula is quite gel-like, it doesn't flow in a way I'm truly comfortable with.

Now, what is great, is the speedpaint formula stuff. (Make sure you get the ones with the 2.0 label, the original formula reactivated with water.) When diluted with Speedpaint Medium or just water, this stuff flows like magic. I really feel in control, getting some amazing grime and shadow results. I strongly recommend the Hardened Leather shade, when diluted with medium it's a perfect match for worked wood, like spears and carpentry. There are amazing browns in the speedpaint range.

The original tins of quickshade were aimed at people who had literal hundreds of models to paint, and honestly, it still works for that customer. If that's you, give it a try.

Or maybe try an oil wash. But then you'd have to gloss varnish it all, then make sure to individually wipe each model, then maybe a matte varnish...

Gotham City coin game for instance.
>>
>>98457917
There was an old Judge Dredd boardgame that I think might work well enough as a basis to build off for a lighter, more action-driven one. Map of MegaCity One and 4 card decks. One was the villains, one was crimes they could commit, the third was the various city locations and the fourth was effectively combat and movement modifiers for players. Drew a villain and crime card together, placed face down at a location and Judges had to 'solve' the case by outscoring the total of the two which they added to their victory points totals; for instance, you might get a street gang (say strength 2) doing littering (strength 1), so getting a total of 4+ on your combat d6 would do it. Of course, the cards in your hand (and other players) could tip the balance there, with plus/minus scores, extra dice and even a "in the confusion the perp escaped", which always went down well when it was a high-value case (say, Judge Death and Murder) that everyone had thrown their hands at.
Did it end up being very random? Yes. Could it be stupidly fun? Also yes.

Chain of Command if you have a buddy or two who are interested in playing with you. You will probably have to build out both platoons, but it's a pretty cheap game

Bolt Action if you need to rely on local clubs or groups to get games in

Yeah I was thinking 15mm, and started looking into using fow minis which seemed perfectly priced but I was actually surprised to learn that it's actually pretty hard to get your hands on any of their product where I live now. I always knew that it's more a tank game than infantry game, but I recall seeing fow/ty products couple years ago on regular absis and now I can't find basic platoon to save my life. Me thinks options are importing forged in battle/peter pig and PSC.
At any rate, thanks for recs.

What is the main difference between CoC and CoC2? I don't see it pirated anywhere.
What does CoC do better than BA? I have no WW2 playgroup in my area but two of my friends want to have a reason to buy WW2 minis as well so they are willing to play any game I recommend as long as I provide all the resources.
>>
>>98468853
It's cleaned up and streamlined, the core rules are the same pretty much, the biggest difference in-game is the new system for using CoC points for different tactic options instead of having to use a whole die.
>>
Question. I'm looking for some terrain instructions for historical things (between metal age to medieval stuff). Where can I find decent instructions/books for things like ruins, buildings or similar "arts and crafts" for historical settings?
>>
>>98470365
I have been making terrain handcrafted for like a decade but I never could get buildings to look nice without spending literally dozens of hours per building. Modelling realistic buildings is really it's own full time hobby in and of itself, so recently I got a 3d printer now that they are so foolproof and easy to use and it has really been a game changer. I still think trees, hedges, roads, water, etc. should be handcrafted because a printer can't make natural organic things as well, but geometric objects like buildings are just so much better printed.

I made all my trees, grass mat, water, etc. using the advice from a guy called Red Beard Baron or some shit on YouTube, I found all his tutorials very cheap and simply, yet somehow they ended up looking better than most other tutorials. I used his tree method and they trees are still going strong almost a decade later.

I never cared about the WW2 vehicles scale wars itt but since I'm officially becoming a tread-head, I have no other choice but to ask: what is the correct scale for vehicles and which brand is the way to go? Should I simply accept that 1/56 from Rubicon is the only right answer?
>>
>>98470365
Can always start with the classics. Not sure what the differences are between 1st edition and 2nd, so:
https://archive.org/download/how-to-make-wargames-terrain-1996-red-nigel-stillman-games-workshop
https://www.scribd.com/document/333587082/191756128-GW-How-to-Make-Wargames-Terrain-2nd-Edition-pdf
>>
>>98470735
1/56 is simply too small compared to 28mm figures, but I ended up using them for BA and CoC since they were readily available.
I have found that 1/50 vehicles from Empress Miniatures are the most perfectly scaled vehicles I've used. Unfortunately they are pretty light on WW2 stuff, mostly early war small stuff. Their modern warfare vehicle range is world class
>>
I want to build big 28mm units as building and painting projects, initially thinking for ancients. Wanting to do it for the impressive spectacle, but I'm wondering also about gaming - are there any mass battle rules which are designed for low unit count? like fielding a single digit number of units per side, but each unit itself is large.
>>
>>98470735
It depends what you want to do. If you want display models, 1:35 is nice. If you want to play skirmishes, then yeah, 1:56 works. For more battle-sized games, 1:72, 1:100, and 1:285 all have their fans.
>>
>>98470792
>If you want to play skirmishes
This is exactly what I want to do. I don't plan to go any bigger than 1000pts in BA, aiming to play mostly 500pts.
>>
>>98468853
>What is the main difference between CoC and CoC2?
CoC2 is pure refinement, better in every way with no reason to go back. Also you can find the second edition core rules in the Rick Roll Trove
>Better formatted and worded rules
>Cheesy stuff fixed or increased in points
>Better national rules
>More sensible close combat
>Expanded the Chain of Command Point system with cheaper and weaker effects
>If your opponent gets double phases you get compensated with points
There are a lot of small changes too, but overall you should start with CoC2. You can use all the older theater and campaign books with it fine, though there will be small discrepancies

>What does CoC do better than BA?
It is far better at campaigns and has a lot more tactical depth. I've seen someone say "Chain of Command doesn't feels more like playing war than playing a game" and I agree. You deal with so much command confusion and randomness that you are wrangling your own guys just as much as you fight the enemy. If that doesn't sound like your kind of thing then Bolt Action is fine. It is designed by ex Warhammer rules writers and it shows, same basic concepts.
>>

>"Chain of Command doesn't feels more like playing war than playing a game"

>>
Hi all has anyone by chance got a link to the "For King and Parliament" rules for to the strongest. Would like a read before committing to a new project and rules. Thanks
>>
>>98470980
I overall liked chain of command, but the random movement was a bridge too far for me. I played a scenario out of the book where my platoon was tasked with defending part of the table against my opponent, and it turned out to be pitifully easy because he had to cross the board length wise without knowing how far his units could travel. That lead to his forces spreading out piecemeal so that I could defeat them in detail, and he couldn't wait to marshal them because he had a turn timer.
>>
>>98474168
I would have immediately agreed with my opponent to disregard the turn timer, in favor of a more narrative approach. >>98473815
I think it's in the OP. You should look at Nevermind the Matchlocks too, which is also in the OP.

WGA's entire business model is flinging enough shit at the wall expecting at least some of it will stick. Nothing they produce is exceptional quality. Their models range from downright awful dogshit to decently acceptable, but never great. Their best model range is Quar, which are so cartoonishly proportioned that they are impossible to fuck up. Their French infantry in great coats are quite nice too, but that is because WGA only produces them and a completely different company designed them.

Working on rules for storming defenses in a medieval-inspired game and wondering if I'm missing anything. Here's what I've got so far. Anything glaringly missing that you'd want to see in a siege type scenario?

Ditches, Ramparts, Palisades, Walls, Towers, Gates

Hail Caesar isn't a terrible game, it's fun to play, but it's not very historical and is very "gamey" similar to Bolt Action. HCs biggest problem is that it's written by Rick Priestly, the worlds premier yapper
>>
>>98486227
Basically this>>98486671

Great historical games are created by two different types of people: history professors like Sam Mustafa, or grogs who have autistic obsession with one specific period. These two types of person are excellent at capturing the flavor and feel of the warfare of that era.

Rick Priestly is neither. His claim to fame is that he's an ex-Games Workshop employee, and his rules reflect it. Hail Caesar is essentially Warmaster with a generalized and overly board historical skin slapped over it.

By "this game" I mean Battle for Moscow, not the game in the picture.
>>
>>98488499
>Does book keeping increase my fun?
I'd say it 100% depends on:
-if you have a group so you can share the load of understanding and remembering highly specific counter-rule exceptions to exceptions at the right time.
-if you are a solo gamer by night and professional accountant by day.

Anything too complex will be more rewarding on a computer, except if you value face to face opposition or touch based experience this very much more.

You might have a better time jumping to another low complexity wargame but this time make sure it uses blocks instead of counters so you now have to deal with real fog of war and bluffing manoeuvres. There's nothing truer to warfare planning that that.
>>
>>98488499
Battle for Moscow is a good first hex-and-counter, which is why SPI used to give it away to new customers (replacing Napoleon at Wterloo).
Hex-and-chit games let you fight the big battles that would be impossible with a few toy soldiers on a table.
Others will praise the visual spectacle of well-painted models on great scenery, which joins two hobbies of model-making and playing games.
I only have enough time for one hobby, so that Arnhem game you pictured is in my collection (from the West Wall series iirc)

I have no idea what interests you but for a Bronze/Iron Age campaign world evolving in a random direction I used a node-based multiple years per turn political/strategy simulator based on Victory Games/GMT Peloponnesian War, then ran the battles with DBM resulting in asymmetric scenasios that isn't just a boring balanced 12v12 element DBA. For galley warfare the solo system I liked the most was Trireme from the 70s, You write down simultaneous orders for ships and the more you have, the easier it is to forget precise individual orders. Of course, not a single ancients naval warfare system whether rules-lite or crunchy properly simulaters the big clashes most people have heard about and want to play. but for smaller-scale warfare where ships number from a handful to a few dozen per side many work.

>>98491356
Following a railroaded real war bores me, the problem's even worse for modern settings like WWII where historians know the delivery date of every crate of canned ravioli to the front and computer games like to flex on their historical accuracy. I don't want to play "Mein Führer can you capture all Soviet oil fields before 1943" or "Will you conquer the world as Rome" for the 100th time.
Also, the only time I tried to teach a guy DBA and not involve Rome was when I had just forced myself to paint my Middle Egyptians and his response was something like "why's everyone on foot, where's the Pharaoh leading his massed chariotry? And against the Mino-who? Can we do Cannae or any Gaulish invasion of Italy instead, you have enough legionaries, barbarians and elephants on the shelf"

I dont know anything about Russians in ww2 besides they did a lot of rapes and Zukov looked baller. Also I hate commies so if I lose I get rewarded with dead commies
How should I make a force?

Why?

You clearly don't have an interest in WW2 and it's not like the game system is amazing.

Did anybody play Mortem et Gloriam? For some reason it is popular in "my group". I tried it but i cant for the life of me get the appeal of it. What was your experience with it?
>>
>>98494234
Fuck off retard, your bait is stale and boring.
>>
>>98494483
I dont. But 2/4 of my friends do and I picked the last game we played.
I'd much rather play bloodbowl or Clash of Spears if we did historicals.

Asking how to get into a game is bait now? Who switched your dilator with a cactus?
>>
>>98495339
Never checked it properly because I always assumed it was a tournament-ready DBA successor allowing you to field any pre-Modern army against any other unrelated one. It makes for unflavor wargames but the at least everyone can indulge in their own specific special interest and still be able to play together.

Buddy you just said you'd rather get into bloodbowl if you do Historicals.

Thoughts on this game? 80-page manual. I've only played Battle for Moscow, this seems like too big a step up for a second game. I know it's a video game but it looks just like a board game and I don't have anyone to play a board game with.

any other games on this site that are good?

or any other games you recommend?

Gary Grigsby is a solid name with a great reputation. I remember the Vassal software being so popular that most wargame editors try to have a free version of their game on it. So if you manage to learn Vassal you can find opponents from all other the world and play multiple games anytime you have a spare 5 minutes in your day. If you want a more direct experience there's Tabletop Simulator but there's definitely less wargames available on it.

Gary Grigsby's games are decent, never played this old DOS one but War in the East is pretty ok, bit on the easy side as the AI does not really hold coherent fronts or do any defence in depth. Definitely do not need to read the whole manual for that one, just play and click buttons, all the calculations are done in the background. Maybe there's even a tutorial I can't remember. I found HoI3 more fun at the time.
Like I said earlier I highly recommend Unity of Command instead. It's more arcady but really teaches you how to do manoeuvring well in the blitzkrieg style. >>98464457

I guess you don't have any money to spend so I agree with >>98501311 you can install VASSAL and play the boardgames without an opponent on that. However there is also no rules adjudication, for that you will need Rally the Troops or Boardgame arena.

Since you seem to be interested in the Eastern Front I will recommend The Dark Valley or Stalingrad Roads. Both have the rulebook and vassal module available for free (buy the game after if you like it). Ideally though you should get an opponent and play a game that he can teach you, or just play computer games.

can any of you guys recommend some good tactical board games or maybe simple hex and chit games? ie where you are fighting a battle - not looking for grand strategy games where you're fighting over a map of europe or whatever
