>be me, smelly teenager
>local card shop has friday night tournaments where the rules are literally anything goes
>like 20-30~ people usually showed up to these, always a good time
>after the first few rounds, people get divided up into deck strength power brackets, so the people who crushed their games go against other good decks, shitters go against shitters, etc.
>each bracket winners gets prizes, so this way even bad goofy decks can still win their own divisions, tryhards go against tryhards, etc.
>playing a shitter deck where i just drop pic related asap to trade libraries
>my deck has no win condition otherwise, just use their own deck to kill themselves
>because the tournament lets people play any variance of strength with no restrictions, some old dudes bust out full racks of power nine cards
>first round i go up against one of these specimens
>he's talking to other people showing off his moxes, lotus, etc.
>game starts
>i get lucky and drop shared fate turn 2 or 3
>he's never seen it before and trying to read and understand, i'm trying to explain it but he doesn't trust me
>calls over judge who says i get to use his power nine deck since he has no way to remove it on his turn
>he says fuck that, he doesn't want me to hold his precious cards
>he forfeits
>judge says people have been throwing the pools rounds so they get into shitter brackets with good decks, so if he throws like this with a deck like his, he needs to exit the tournament and not get a refund
>he says ok and just leaves
>i advance by default and obviously get my ass kicked outside of pools
>end of the night prizes are going out and the shop owner thought my situation was funny and gave me a booster pack
i got a helm of kaldra in that pack. idk why the sweaty guy didn't just ask to handle his own deck and not let me touch them, he just folded immediately and left

It's insane how WotC can release more legendary creatures in a single year than existed for most of the game's history, explicitly made for commander, yet there's still so few that are remotely enjoyable.

Take out card for something similar OR just use the nicest nonfoil version (?)
As an exemple, even with foil avaliable (just the normal version, not this one), I use picrel in a full foil 4fun 60 card land-only deck because it's the nicest (sadly, not having a foil version)

>tryhard used to pubstomping at LGS way back in the day
>advent of "CEDH" as a term used by annoying Redditors
>runs a full-powered Kess storm list
>makes pods miserable by consistently ending the game turn 2-4
>end up in a winner's pod with him
>he tutors several times in a turn but can't pop off until the next one
>resolve Wheel of Fortune to dump his tutor targets and give the other players a refill in the hopes they draw interaction
>he gleefully flashes in Notion Thief
>scoop in response to remove my own Wheel from the stack
The melty was legendary. He screamed for a judge, who told him it was a perfectly legal play. He then went on to lose to the other players tunneling him and never returned.

>>98423628
OG Dina, all you need to do is pack in as much lifegain as you can. I ended up taking my Dina deck apart because it was too much solitaire. I'd largely ignore the rest of the board and just focus on my own lifegain and that's how it would win. I'd completely ignore her second ability.
But I wasn't really having fun with it.

New Dina you want a lot of little sac fodder creatures and she tends to push you to play with at least some aggression.

Whoever cracks co-op, but EDH and makes a fun format will be rolling in it. People love friendslop where they work together and the format lacks that cooperative element as of now.
>>
>>98423776
we should be, and red and white should be the main battle colors
>>
>>98423788
EDH could work like this:

Turns:
Player 1 of team A > Player 1 of team B > Player 2 of team A > Player 2 of team B
Life: 40 per player
Banlist: same as cEDH (brack 5 for faggots)
Hands/mana/field: not shared by the team
Wincon: both members of the team must be defeated, games go on if onyl one dies (combo wins, state wins [like: x happen, you win the game] works normally)

It seems extremely telegraphed and interactable.
>>
>>98423788
I will NEVER stop shilling raid decks from the WoW TCG, as there has never been a co-op product quite like it and there never will be again.
>fully kitted out preconstructed, high-powered deck designed to 1v3 players
>full suite of bosses fought in order that spawn in one after the other
>several hours long as you progress through the bosses
>designed with multiple deliberate "reset" phases to set the players' resources back if they get too far ahead
>balanced with anti stall mechanics that force players to progress to the next boss or they'll get overwhelmed
>came with a booster pack of cool-looking "loot" cards that are terrible in 1v1 but actually useful when used in raids
Hearthstone killed a truly great game.
>>
>>98424022
They even went on to make dungeon decks, which were an automated version. It turned the 1v3 archenemy design into 3 players versus a single AI deck. Not quite as robust but still fun as fuck.
I'd KILL for Wizards to figure out a way to emulate the experience.

they can get waifu sexo coomers with Whitemane and Alexstrasza and also DEI wokepoints for Fastwheels Khadgar and the Arathi chick with the prosthetic arm
more than enough variety for every single land type
plenty of choices for reprints that aren't as stupid as Benedict Sheoldredbatch

Does anyone have that pic of the dude standing in a retail store, think it was Target, where someone swapped one of the face commanders of a precon with that and returned it?
>>
>>98424076
Yeah. Adding onto that the breadth of strategies in Magic means certain decks just don't work. How do you prevent combo? Most of these formats just have the raid deck reshuffle if they get milled, so that strategy is out the window.

Molten Core and other raids had passive effects that inhibited certain strategies. A Magic "raid" would need to be utterly grueling to slow players down. Arcane Lab effects, a total limit on mana sources that untap, etc. To the point that it might be torturous.

sounds like a very cool gunty bag. love repurposing bags for stuff like this. any photo of what it kind of looks like?
>>
>>98423788
There's a shop I go to that plays with homebrew formats regularly. One of them that I was a part of and liked was called "pinata."
Basically, players can't attack each other, only the pinata in the middle of the board, which has 100 life, can't gain life, and the player who owns the source that deals the last point of damage breaks the pinata and wins.
The catch is that players could block on behalf of the pinata, and still cast spells targeting other players and their permanents. So, it started as a cooperative game that turned into a tight battlecruiser with forced defenders at the end.

yeah I have tried to play with randoms. got back into playing online this winter on MTGO then built up a couple decks in paper. a month ago I got one terrible mismatch. wanted to do bracket 4 and this one dude played his cedh deck and the other 2 dudes had b3s. played one relatively short game then I had to pick up my GF. not bad dudes but not a great game at all. the one guy seemed kind of like a try hard, I think he does standard tournaments

last 4 weeks ive popped in the store was opening some packs and rearranging some stuff at a table waiting 45 mins to an hour for a game nothing popped up everyone already had their pods (what the fuck is the point of going to an LGS then where you cant drink or smoke in there?)

last week I was walking up but hitting a vape and looked inside and it was pretty busy but it just looked like too many huge fatso nerds I couldn't even walk in I couldn't bring myself to do it.

I have bracket 2 and 3 decks to lead with and there are like 2 or 3 other game shops in a 15 or 20 mile radius just this one is the main one I know of, I think theres better ones in this area

blue core stock is SUPPOSED to be made in Germany not China. All the GōtC cards made in Belgium, Japan and America are supposed to use proprietary German blue core...do they still? No clue.

I'm sure the Chinese have a decent facsimile by now. But most "Chinese reprints" have black core as far as I understand.
>>
>>98425220
>American proxy curator
Yeah. He's like proxy king. He buys them from chang directly, for literally pennies, then upsells them 300%.
Not only is he directly supporting chang, he's a jew. Double reason to not give him money.
>>
>>98425234
his upcharge is 80¢. I alternate between ordering from him and ordering direct from Underground Sea. His foils are actually the same price unless you're buying in mass bulk which is what he does. I buy like 60 dollar orders to finish out decks every other month or so. Mage also gets them from Black Lotus and this other guy Ron.

I spend a decent amount on good cards I like, like Reserved List shit and stuff I like but I'm not paying crazy prices for game pieces for a player-made game.

Nor do I want to directly support groomers of the coast in their current configuration. so I'd rather support counterfeiters including American and Chinese upstart businessmen.

I buy a lot of singles on eBay and TCGroomer supporting regular Americans (too expensive to buy from Canada) but B Mage and USea are doing a great thing unless GōtC starts reprinting the duals and other shit. and then theres still the moral quandary of support GōtC even if they did

the foil 8th edition stuff is awesome for keeping black borders though, have an island like that

Rhystic doesn't really do much for me. I am not spending turns 1, 2, and possibly 3 doing anything but setting up the Reed machine. Once it starts, I'm not planning a game that is going to last long enough for rhystic to accumulate insane value. And this is bracket 3 and there are already 3 game changers there (Cyc rift, ancient tomb, and mystical tutor which I plan to replace with fierce guardianship to protect the Reed Nation)

bracket 3s "rules" are retarded like arbitrary BS. when I returned to the game this past winter having stopped playing well before the Lab Leak Incident, the game changer brackets were new to me. my main deck had a Chrome Mox in it. it was definitely not a "bracket 3" deck. it just helped cast a non-green Elder Dragon-style expensive commander. it was very much just "battle cruiser" magic

yes
this is why gavin's reasoning for making distinctions between 2-card and 3-card infinites actually impractical and easily sidestepped in practice as really it just becomes a contest as to who can build a deck with the most number of modular 3 card combos, see cedh lumra
ultimately brackets are about *when* you can pop off with an infinite or a you-win-the-game condition like thoracle, not the number of cards involved

>hey my deck has a 40%/50%/60%/70%/80%/90% chance to die to a single doom blade so please allow it in b2

You want to get a start your engines card down as fast as possible to start generating speed. Your speed go up the turn you get speed 1 so it'll take 3 turns if you can make an opponent lose life once each. The ideal is an evasive one drop gets placed turn 1 and you get a start your engines card down turn 2 but samut is 6 mana so idk maybe that timer is a little less strict. The whole point of edh was to play retard big creatures and have slower games that don't happen in other formats
>>
>>98428109
Nobody wants to play bracket 4/5 though, ergo relegating strategies to them is essentially soft banning your ability to play them. Also since commander is the only format people want to play it shouldn't be ruled by quirk chunguses who want to battle cruise without MLD

The whole point of brackets is so that when you're with randoms, there's an understood power range with certain mechanics and interactions not being expected.
>>
>>98428430
wotc can't track them even if they wanted to because the vast majority play in their basements and not at the lgs
that's actually part of why they created brackets, so that the data they get from the lgs is unified and not just a bunch of rule zeroes
>>
>>98428440
This is just all of /edhg/ where they manufacture perfect scenarios in their head then if you look at their deck it's 20 "combos" like this with no way to actually draw or tutor them.

I refuse to believe there's not a way to make it fun and gather that data that doesn't breed whiny antigamers. I won't embarrass myself pretending I know better than them, but there's 100% a better way so I can play decks that interest me without trolling that overall fit the power level
>>
>>98428472

>can't run strats I want
I can respect land destruction as a mechanic in aggro and played with it a few times because it can lead to a win as you described, when you're ahead of the board that no individual player's state can stop you. I do have contention with saying that specific way is an endgoal strategy. Its implying that you think you will always have some unanswerable board that your opponent's nonland permanents can't handle. Which, if you're consistently getting to that point, your deck is using it as a win-more.
But I say that without a list or table in front of me, so I don't know if a Void Winnower, Retribution of the Meek, a Silence on an Isochron Scepter, or the like does practically the same thing for you.

>the playerbase has been taught to whine and bitch about them
There's no "taught" anything. You need to sit back and realize you're arguing over taking away the game's main resource from players. Players who join a game usually want to play the game. It doesn't matter if it's a sound part of a strategy; certain colors just do not have a way to deal with MLD and others only really have silver bullet cards that aren't worth running in 99.99% of cases. You're talking about a mechanic that effectively makes people unable to play the game, leaving them with the option to either scoop or waste time hoping they draw a quick answer.
