>>98425046I really like the old fantasy book frames. But there's not really any cards in the set I'm excited to build around.
>>98425344The cards look so fucking ass thematically. Same characters over and over.THEN FUCKING FOREST ANIMALS. Not even with some kind of fantasy coating on it. Literally>bear>bear (bigger)>bear (biggest)
>>98425243The art of this card kind of annoys me because as far as I understand, this is the only card depicting Taysir of Rabiah. You would think that such important character for early MTG lore would get at least few cards dedicated to him but no, WoTC is stubbornly avoid it like fire.
>>98425498It’s literally the text from the single book that this set is based on. It’s a ninety year old tiny paperback that’s the bedrock for ALL fantasy, you can take a couple hours and read through it.
The text in question"Tell me what you want done, and I will try it, if I have to walk from here to the East of East and fight the wild Were-worms in the Last Desert. Their are 6 mana creatures that scale with the number of mountains you control. I don't know how to control a mountain but trust me on this one old chap."

Are we expecting any MtG Gencon reveals?
>>98429114I'm not a fan, especially since it's totally uninteractable to an even greater extent than poison counters, but my buddy loves it so I am obligated to tolerate it.
>>98428983Bone picker is from Amonkhet- read the fucking card and realize that double masters was a reprint set.Between whether bone picker as a 4 mana 3/2 that becomes a 1 mana 3/2, or the bats that are a 5 mana 4/2 that becomes a 2 mana 4/2, the difference isn’t power creep. Actually technically I’d argue that the new version is weaker than the old one because high power on a deathtouch creature is worth less since any other creature dies just the same. I’d gladly give up the extra point of power to make it cost one mana less- hell, if it was three generic for 2/2 flying deathtouch that was free if something died, then that would be even better.
>>98428154why the fuckdo they keep adding dumb shit that has to be tracked for the gamefor no reason
>>98428100sad ponies
>>98426468Because the story director is being told to make more hype moments and aura. This has been Magic's story for over 20 years now where it's nothing but a means to set up whatever nostalgiajerk set they want to do next.

>>98429231Deathtouch is kind of irrelevant here i mean what i said lol a 4/2 flyer for 1b is great in draft. Kills you faster than a b 3/2 flyer as well if you cast it in curve. A free 2/2 with flying and deathtouch is retarded you are retarded.
>>98429392It doesn't need to be tracked for the whole game, it's just while he's in play - unless you mean having satisfied the having an enduring story thing, but that's like city's blessing where you just need to note that it's happened and then it's switched on for the rest of the game.
>>98428100I'm tired.Cards should not be colorless unless there is a solid flavor reason for it (Artifacts, Eldrazi, Ugin related cards, etc...). The bird is shit and these are shit. I don't like the other earlier ones either before you bring up shit from other sets made after Magic went to shit.
>>98429605Sure, it might beat a 3/2 in limited, but limited isn’t the issue when you’re talking about power creep in ‘modern’ sets. And like I said, I’d sacrifice that one extra power to cast it for one mana cheaper if I had the choice.

>>98430954I mean, frankly, Jace and Urza are pretty much the same character arc, except for Jace we actually saw him do good (or at least attempt to do good) as an insecure nerd before becoming strong and then doing evil stuff. Urza was a villainous prick ever since he and Mishra found the mightstone and weakstone, and only avoided being the actual villain because Yawgmoth was there… until Urza spent five minutes in Phyrexia and willingly obeyed Yawgmoth like a retard.Jace may also be a retard with Reality Fracture, but at least he had a level of basic human decency to fall from.
>>98430971Cooked past burn point?
Does one ever get over feeling like losses are often outside of their control (in draft)?>one in three games is practically guaranteed mana fuck or multiple mulligans>they go first, perfect curve, gg>they drop the best bomb in set, gg>they have the exact weird dogshit card needed to blow me out 3 for 1
>>98431046of course this happens to everyone. the very best drafters on mtgo are winning around 75% of their matches, meaning 1/4 of the time something like you said happens to somebody who would win every time if it was chess. If you are a regular mortal player this effect is magnified, every other match will involve some bullshit.
>>98431092except I'm stuck in plat 4, which is extra depressing since it's the start of "real" ranked since you don't get to pips for wins. People on Arena just all seem insanely good and never make mistakes.
>>98430986Kind of exactly my point. Urza always had the lust for power and his attempts at doing good tended to come with some major caveats, so his heel turn was alarming but not out of character. With Jace he's been nothing but a sparkling superhero since very early in his characterization, and suddenly he's doing his best Doctor Doom impression with absolutely no indication of why this shift in morality occurred or any sort of foreshadowing. I'm half expecting them to Superior Spiderman it and say Tezzeret swapped brains with him.
>>98430346Star Wars in this day and age...Nobody want to play as Ray Skywalker.
>>98431046i believe that arena drafts are rigged. i seem to flood out/not draw lands twice as much as arena as i do in paper. also, my opponents in arena seem to topdeck the exact cards they need to stabilize when empty handed a large portion of the time.
I stopped playing Arena because it is obviously rigged. I won too much then was given nothing but lands multiple games in a row. I only play paper magic now and that's maybe once every few months either cube or battlebox/dandan.
>>98431286>>98431420Unlikely. 17lands autists would notice it.e.g. they found a subtle manipulation of packs in powered cube: https://bsky.app/profile/sierkovitz.bsky.social/post/3mcrzkq4mns2h
>>98431432They added 2 cards to the Power of 9 and blue is still the only color.
>>98431046not in paper, at least not in ways that feel unfair. sometimes you just flood out or get mana screwed. that's part of the variance. sometimes the other guy just draws all his bombs early enough. that's part of the variance. its still somewhat tilting to lose to obvious variance, but its relatively rare and also very obvious, so its easy to shake it off and just accept that sometimes the heart of the cards is on your opponent's sidebut I know my deck isn't stacked against me on purpose, I physically shuffled it myself and know nobody else fucked with it. I know the other deck isn't stacked in his favor. I watched the other guy shuffle his and know he's not fucking with it once the game starts. but if you're talking arena its 100% rigged, top to bottom front to back. every single freemium online competitive game is today, and if you think they aren't you're a sucker. they can do anything and everything behind the scenes to adjust the outcome of a game based on what their algorithms think each player needs to stay engaged
>>98431420>I stopped playing Arena because it is obviously rigged. It was so much worse before that autist assembled large datasets of games to prove the shuffler was rigged.
>>98431046Even outside of Arena rigging shenanigans, the BO1 ladder format is a miserable way to play draft. BO3 helps balance out flood/ screw somewhat plus in games 2 and 3 you have a better idea of what your opponent has and can better play around bombs/ niche blowout cards. Pod drafts like you do in paper also help balance out the format a bit as it's harder for someone to build an OP deck assuming other people know what they're doing. With arena match making this isn't the case as once you get to like 4 wins or so you'll mostly be matched with people who were drafting with a bunch of drooling morons and got to take all the OP cards whereas you may have had to compromise on a more flawed deck
>>98431787I'm convinced a lot of the so called "drafters" are bots too. If they can't make the numbers work they'll just put a few bots in.
>>98431432>a subtle manipulation of packsit's called card rarity, and they use it every set
>>98431046It's infinitely worse in Quick Draft, I used to go for it whenever I could since I'm not spending money for fucking digital cards, but that whole queue is cursedBots are extremely retarded and draft specifically to fuck you over, so you rarely ever get to build an actually proper deck and I suspect there's bots in the actual queue as well since I've seen some ungodly plays by weird accounts

>>98431152Not only has Jace not always been sparkling good, but his fall into villainy was built up over a lot of shit.Jace is a telepath, which means he not only can read minds, but in fact has to actively concentrate in order to not hear the thoughts of everyone around him. Worse though, his mental abilities can overpower the minds of the unprepared and break their delicate structures- he describes it as being a sledgehammer in a room of glass sculptures. This includes things like active perception, memories, emotions… basic motor control. In a fit of rage as a child he made his abusive Sphinx mentor forget how to breathe, at which point the poor guy suffocated wailing like a baby. Then you have to consider the rapid tenure of events he built up since being introduced:>accidentally release the Eldrazi>Ravnica almost falls to war so claims the responsibility of the Living Guildpact>helps Gideon defeat the first two Eldrazi>interacts with Emrakul as she imprisoned herself in the moon of Innistrad>took part in the Aether Revolt of Khaladesh>got his mind blown out by Bolas on Amonkhet>marooned and nearly died on Ixalan, managed to fall for a goth baddie who in turn only didn’t kill him immediately because he had amnesia>had to then remove her memories of loving him to keep her safe from Bolas>his role model Gideon dies fighting Bolas, he loses the Guildpact powers, then the one with the powers then (Niv Mizzet) punishes Vraska for not being helpful enough.>phyrexians get ready to invade, in the strike force Vraska gets infected, and he’s too damn in love with her to avoid getting compleated himself>manages to hide copies of his and vraska’s minds in a pocket of his brain while most of him is enslaved to Elesh Norn>subverts the invasion by deliberately not being good at his slave job, saves the multiverse, and still isn’t allowed to be happy with Vraska.Yeah, if I was an insecure guy like Jace, I’d have snapped by then as well.

>>98434075Nah, I disagree. If only because I prefer fantasy.
>>98434065I mean, look at it this way- the only planeswalkers with a similar tenure to this point are Nissa, who’s canonically an autistic tree hugger, so of course she doesn’t care, Chandra, who is a stupid eternal flame baby, and Liliana, who has bested the odds and scammed and been awful and never had to fully pay for her crimes. Ajani comes close, but he sparked as an adult, sidestepped the Eldrazi entirely, and other than Phyrexia has been a force for good. Elspeth comes close, but she’s a tragic hero- keyword being HERO.Jace is just… a smarter than average regular guy. He doesn’t have anything special to drive him or set him apart from others the way other characters do. He just… thinks, and feels, like a regular person.

>>98436745>It’s almost like FIN was excluded for some specific, cherry-picking-like reasonThe reason FIN is excluded is because the data only goes back 1 year, and FIN was not within a 1 year window at the time I made the initial image.
>>98436986>>98436990Furthermore, even if the data went back that far I am confident FIN would still be low in this metric.Spider-man is one of the top-10 selling sets of all time, you know! MSH apparently is a FIN-level success and it does not show in Play Booster sales. My best guess given what I've seen is that FIN likely hit the 1800-2500 territory.
>>98436842there's 0 hype because its spiderman 2small set with terrible cards clearly designed exclusively for commander that is for some reason being foisted upon standard
>>98436842>What I do know is I'd rather have 6 sets a year than have one of them be thisBest I can do is 8 sets a year, and 3 of them are this.
>>98436813This was my opinion on Duress all the way back in USG it's just that they patched over it by making creatures extremely good (so no more decks running 1 copy of Morphling as their only creature) so half the time it can't hit the card that matters. Basically no other card game has permitted a Thoughtseize-style effect to remain playable even in a drastically nerfed state (Appointer of the Red Lotus) because it's such a horrible design.
it's happening
I played RG Survival Aggro at Premodern today. List was roughly this with slight sideboard adjustmentshttps://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/7796833#paper>2-1 Oath PonzaG1 - He wins die roll and snowballs out ahead with a fast 4/4 Terravore that I can't remove, I concede to conceal infoG2 - He wasn't sure how to board because of the above, I'm able to remove his Oath and run away with creaturesG3 - I keep a 1 land hand built around Quirion Dryad, some burn and Naturalize and drew into a second one. I destroyed his Oath and rode the Dryad to victory>1-2 FEBG1 - I have a Lavamancer hand so he opts for a Shapeshifter Devourer Trisk line which I tap out of surviving I thinkG2 - I keep an opening hand with 3 wastelands and he mulls to 3, his only land being Treva's RuinsG3 - He therapies me and misses but sees that I have Reverent Silence. He plays out his own survival and I'm prompted to go through my lizards then Silence to blow both of them up, then he Pyroclasms (I should have ended the chain with an Arrogant Wurm) which I didn't expect. The game becomes stalled, my two Wild Mongrels unable to break through his two Wall of Roots even going to the point of Unearthing one when I do manage to kill it. He ends up resolving a Battlefield Scrounger which I can't remove due to his well stocked graveyard, then he casts a second Pyroclasm to sweep up my now 3 Mongrels and wins with combat damage.>2-1 Elves w/ AngerG1 - Keep double Lavamancer hand, but can't keep the elves under control and he snowballs up to double HermitG2 - He has vomits 4 creatures into play on turn 2, so I bolt the Symbiote and kill the other 3 with Cave-In and he can't rebuild.G3 - He gets a turn 3 (?) Masticore into play, but I have Bolt + Cave-In to deal with it and the mana dorks in play while he's tapped out. I think I ended up winning with a Dryad + Lava Dart or something
>Hear Hobbit spoilers finally ended>Check spoilers>More interesting card to me is a 2-mana Bone PickerI think I've officially given up on standard. Reality Fractured is gonna have to be the best Magic set ever to bring me back in, and "Snapcaster but red" is not what I'm looking for. Maybe if Cauldron goes below $30 after rotation I'll get into modern.
>>98437032>Battlefield Scrounger/Volrath's Shapeshifterhow does that even work in the rules anon? if you have the full text of Scrounger and use its ability then gain the full text of something else (or nothing) then go back to having the Scrounger text again can you use the ability again?
Had a dream about leaving two mana open to play Rakdos Charm's anti-artifact mod against Ruby Storm as an answer to their early Ruby, I wonder if that was the right play or if my subconscious is supposed to know that emptying their graveyard when they go off with flashback is better.

>>98437094I am very tired so if I typed something about that line sorry I didn't mean to, it didn't occur in any of my games. >>98437154What is FEB?
>>98437156In MtG? In context of Survival of the Fittest most likely Full English Breakfast combo. (Too complicated to explain. Sorry!)
>>98437156Yeah, full english breakfast. You can look up some videos but tl;dr it's a deck built around Hermit Druid and has a number of other very complex paths that you can take to victory. It's quite resilient but can be difficult to play.
>>98437103>scry 2 vs draw oneare you dense
>>98437212>>98437204>>98437156I thought full english breakfast is rather simple? Have Volrath's Shapeshifter in play. Discard Flowstone Hellion (Volrath's Shaleshifter gains its abilities), then activate its (0) ability 11 times, then discard Phyrexian Dreadnought (Volrath's Shapeshifter gains its abilities except since it's already in play Dreadnought's ETB ability won't trigger), then allow 11 activated abilities to resolve. Result? 23/1 trampler with haste.

>>98438653>>98438659forget about pioneer, just play standard and consume ub and get excited for next products
The ironic thing about nu-Zhalfir is that even with niggers on ALL the card art, mono White cards are STILL going to be the weakest of the set. Like every set.
>>98438670> just play standard*commander
>>98438639>>98438659Because it's easier to say you have pioneer in your game when you change the definition of what pioneer is instead of releasing all the cards.
>>98438659They did for some time but at one point they probably got tired of people asking them when they will put pioneer on arena like they promised and just decided the format was close enough to pioneer despite lacking some cards. They changed the name on the format to pioneer so they could say pioneer was on arena . Mission accomplished.
>>98437629For me the problem is the mechanic because of how much the game warps around its existence to accommodate a design that adds extremely little to the game. Thoughtseize and Grief are obviously the two most egregious examples of it, but the same issues apply to basically every design (look at how often people bitch about the 2-mana equivalents every time they're in Standard). This effect also comes attached to a lot of informational baggage in a manner that's unavoidable, namely the ability to instantly view your opponent's hand, which removes any guesswork surrounding responses you need to play around. Viewing the hand alone is already an extremely valuable effect (Git Probe VS Street Wraith), and this comes attached to the ability to remove the biggest problem. The potential for skill expression here is also extremely low, with the ceiling generally coming down to "I know my opponent is on a combo deck (because I saw their hand) so I will take their combo piece". This is all ostensibly in service of putting a suppression vector on combo decks that would otherwise require a counterspell, but in exchange you increase the bias towards going first, and put drastically more pressure on starting hands to be strong, both of which have already repeatedly been large problems in Magic. Quite ironically, it also ends up serving as a great tool for combo decks as well, because now they can not only tell if you have one of a few answers to them, but they force you to have two instances of it in your hand. It's a design basically nobody likes. Every single time another card game experiments with this design, it ends up getting banned or errata'd into oblivion because it genuinely causes 10x the problems it tries to solve.
>>98438954If it were never an effect you could access on turn 1 or turn 2, but something that could be attached to 3+ cost cards (having it ride along as an ETB on a creature, for example), how much would that alleviate the issues with it?

>>98439610wow, that's ass because those types of permanents don't naturally go to the graveyard anyway. pic related is you, right?
>>98439248>>98439582it would either be bad (i used to play toll of the invasion) or aids (lifebane zombie). if it could only stop combos, that would be fine. the problem is stripping away answers to your opponent's strategy
>>98439248Then you're left with the same dilemma. Either it's unplayably overcosted (why even bother with the effect at that point), or it's a card that makes it impossible for your opponent to recover from you resolving it.
