Recently my mom and aunt have started getting into DnD. We ran a nice little one-shot adventure, and they want to start up another one. My issue is that I think we would really benefit from a third player, which would be my dad. My dad, for some reason, hates the idea and shakes his head without ever explaining.I want to say this is because he finds it way too nerdy? He doesn't mind playing family games with us, but he adamantly refuses for DnD, and I think it's because he has bad experiences with nerds like Doctor Who fans. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to convince him to join us? I genuinely believe that he would have fun if he joined us, I just need to get my foot in the door. I'm also not just doing this for my own benefit, but I think my mom and aunt would have a lot more fun if we had one other person to interact with, roleplaying-wise.
>>98436028remind him that he's going to die one day and the amount of time you have with each other is finite. So he can do this cringe little thing with his family that loves him or not. You can sell him on the idea that it will be fun or whatever but really just remind him this is an opportunity to spend time with people that love him writing stories they'll remember till the day they die together. if you want a lighter touch maybe show him this shit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWUMMxO192U its like crack to normies.ALSO have you tried not playing dnd? i'm serious if there is a show he likes or a property see if there is a system for it and run that instead or play something like risus or fiasco to warm him up to the idea.
>>98436028>thumbnail looks like domestic violenceAlso is your aunt single?
>>98436028Just ask him why he’d want to. And if his problem is just that he doesn’t know if he’d like it if he thinks it’s too nerdy, remind him the only people playing are immediate family, that this is for your mom and aunt and not to make fool out of him, and that you won’t make it complicated. If he still refuses, try a less intimidating game with presets. If he’s still too stubborn, look elsewhere. It is just a game night, so it’d be weird for him to be so hung up on it, but by that merit don’t force the issue if he won’t meet you halfway OP.
>>98436134I suppose you're right, I should probably just ask him. Then it becomes a question of how to ask him without him getting angry about it, as he is oft wont to do. Thinking emoji.
>>98436028>he has bad experiences with nerds like Doctor Who fansThat's because Doctor Who fans are insufferable, especially Chibnall-apologists.
>>98436155Well, update, he simply and curtly said "I just don't want to. I don't know why." Hmm. I'm glad he didn't raise his voice but I guess that's it, huh?
>>98436181That answer tells you he knows why, he isn’t interested in taking or justifying himself to you. Maybe consider asking someone else or just running the one shot with your mom and aunt. And don’t worry, you handled it like an adult. If he doesn’t want to respond like an adult, then that’s not something to feel bad over.
>>98436198Oh don't worry, we already did the one-shot earlier this year. They enjoyed it a lot. It was Wild Sheep Chase, and they especially loved the dragon made out of bedsheets and wood. Very charming one-shot.The issue is that there's nobody else in the family. Everyone is either dead, in jail, or moved away without ever contacting the rest of us. The only one left is a 90+ grandma with dementia too strong for her to even comprehend what a tabletop game is. Probably barely remembers what a table is desu. I suppose the next question is how to make a campaign fun with just two people, but that's for another thread. Thanks for the kind words man!
>>98436218Anytime anon. If you’re going to run another one-shot or a short campaign, two people by themselves should be just fine. But if you’re really stuck and think they absolutely need a third person to interact with, consider hireling npcs. Maybe a bodyguard or locksmith or area guide or even a simple porter. Someone to just use a skill they otherwise lack but otherwise let them take the leading role. But otherwise, they should do just fine. Good luck with your gwme!
>>98436028Gygax used to do this quick demo thing that I think he called The Five Second Adventure (I may be wrong about the name.) Basically, you present a scenario to them and ask them what they would do, and this usually gets them interested in the game. I personally have modified this a bit to appeal to my coworkers and the normies in my life.Present him with the following:Imagine that there were an apocalypse and all the power went out... For most people this was really devastating, but for you and your family, you manage to scrape by and slowly you form a small community with your neighbors. Gradually over time, people recognize that you have a knack for getting shit done, and slowly you take the role of a leader to your small community... One week, someone close to you gets sick. REALLY sick. And you have no idea what you're going to do. Just as it looks like they might die, someone from the community comes to you and tells you that the other day, they saw a shed out in a field a few miles from your house. When they peeked in the window of the shed, they saw that inside were boxes of canned food, survival equipment, a generator, and most importantly MEDICAL SUPPLIES. You have a suspicion that those medical supplies could save your loved one's life. So, the next morning you pack up a four wheeler, and the only rifle that you still have ammo for, and you ride out to the shed... When you arrive at the shed, you see that it's being guarded by a young man of about 20 or 21. He's got a gun on his hip, and he's smoking a cigarette, not really paying attention. What do you do?I have drawn about six or so people into the idea of playing D&D by presenting them with this scenario, then letting them know that this is basically all D&D is. Collaborative storytelling.
>>98436028>My issue is that I think we would really benefit from a third playerIf you can't rope him in, I recommend "Scarlet Heroes" It's a good way to play OSR D&D with just one or two players. It does this by powering up individual players to be about as strong as four players combined while still maintaining a decent amount of challenge and need for caution and safety.
>>98436028Trying to drag someone who doesn't want to play isn't going to enhance their experience, it's just going to ruin yours.
>>98436028Your dad thinks (probably rightfully) that you’re a faggotThe way you convince him otherwise is move out of his house and into your own, get a real job, and marry a wife.
>>98436482That’s assuming he doesn’t already have those and isn’t doing this to spend time with family. Which you’d have to be a pretty big faggot to assume someone’s as big a loser as yourself.
>>98436549Seconded.>>98436482I hate how everyone on this website always assumes the worst scenario. It's disgusting.
>>98436028>Iffa I no roll good I beata my wife!
>>98436028Why is Netanyahoo playing D&D? Hes getting Israel all over my hobby.
>>98436028Leave your dad in peace and ask your mom or aunt to get one of their lady friends to play with you.A lot of aunties are into romantasy these days, stuff like A Court of Thorns and Roses etc., so they're probably open to fantasy realm adventuring already
>>98436577Dad's probably too much of a normalfag and should be left alone. You either get games of imagination or you don't, and lots of normalfags get all imagination beaten out of them in their teens
>>98437113OP is trying to play games with his family not hagmaxx
>>98436482>and marry a wifeCan my wife be a man?
>>98436055As someone helping handle the loss of a parent, thank you for this. The memorial's next weekend, but, for now, they're cackling over this.
>>98439317no problem anon. my dad passed last month and those are the things I wish I said to him years ago. I did run a no rules game where he was a barbarian knight trying to bring his loved one back to life by slaying a time dragon (he did) this year after he totally lost his sight. He really liked it and it kept his occupied. I hope things work out for you and you're games are fun and memorable.
