Originally the Emperor was clearly meant to be the guy powering the Astronomicon, so you feed him psykers to keep the Astronomicon going, but when GW went back to HH lore they realized that didn't make sense; the Astronomicon had been active since long before the Emperor was interred on the throne, and the Emperor was out on campaign for most of the Great Crusade. So they had to quietly rewrite the Astronomicon to be powered by a choir of 1,000 disposable psykers all burning themselves out sharing psychic chants they were taught by the Emperor, and he would occasionally guide them and refocus them to keep the Astronomicon blazing bright. Psykers who survived their term on the Astronomicon choir would be permanently soul-linked to the Emperor and trusted to go out into the galaxy as Sanctioned.This lore retcon was carried over into Nu-Lore, which keeps leading to confusing lore conflicts because when the Emperor 'dies' during the Noctis Aeterna, the Astronomicon goes out... except he's not the one powering it in Nu-Lore, it's a choir of psykers, and they don't need him to do their thing. And if psykers are actually just burning themselves out to power the Astronomicon, which is standard procedure put in place by the Emperor way back when, why is it described as a 'sacrifice' before the Golden Throne? They're not even in the throne room doing this, they're in a completely separate tower of the Palace. But then we're told the Emperor DOES still consume more than a thousand psykers every day, which is completely separate from the 1,000 psykers burning their souls to cinders sustaining the Astronomicon? So it's actually 2,000 psykers dying to keep the Imperium going every day? Make it make sense.
