Gentlemen. I have made great progress today in compiling the information for the 1st battle of Kapteyn Academy. The prologue lore is written, the individual post battle reports for each Mechwarrior are written. The turn by turn pictures of the battle are compiled and edited. I think I have also even cemented the upgrades and mech rolls that each player will get to be doing for the next battle. All that remains is to write up the turn by turn battle report.
Doing the individual pilot reports also really helped me in seeing just how well each pilot did during the battle. It also helped me come up with a solution about how to handle some potential mech rolling for some of the pilots. I'll gladly spoil that bit now.
For the 4 Mechwarriors that represented the Draconis Combine, a singular offer and ultimatum is being made. Your liason believes that it would bring great honor and glory to the dragon if a Charger was sent to the school! But who should get to pilot it? The performances of the pilots was(mostly) consistent within that lance. So it has been decided. Whichever Mechwarrior shows the greatest proficiency in the piloting stat after the next year at the academy, will be granted the honor of piloting the Charger!

This pic showcases the 4 pilots representing the DC. It's from turn 2. I didn't make a turn 1 one, since there was no shooting on turn 1. Marik got hit by a ML and a MG in the CT on turn 2. Wasn't a great start for him. I've already decided that at a bare minimum, Marik will be offered the -3V variant upgrade of the Locust if he wants it. I can't imagine a person wouldn't prefer that over the -1V, but the -1V does technically have a tiny bit more armor. Regardless, the choice will be Marik's.
Anyway, the DC pilots have 6, 5, 6, and 4 piloting. The Charger will go to who has the best piloting skill, not who improves the most. In the event of a tie, well, I've got a few tie-breaker ideas in mind.

>>
>>98439501 (Me)
I have decided that I'll release the raw stat numbers from the match now. I've decided I'll track stats across 4 categories
>Damage to Tonnage Ratio
>Raw Damage Dealt
>Accuracy
>Attack Made (Combines ranged & melee)
Through these 4 categories, you can see how much a pilot in any given category. Some trends definitely emerge to give you a preview of how good the pilots did in the battle. Turns out one of the Scorpion Light Tanks didn't really help, like, at all. Ooops.
Names are color coded by their faction. I'm sure you can figure it out.
>>
Gen/t/lemen, lend me your ears.
Autocannons are obese, underammo'd suicide pills. Every fucking build has people ripping out the autocannons, Shadowhawk? Rip out the AC5, throw in a Large laser. Dragon? Rip that AC5 out and PPC in. It's fucking bullshit how a AC5 costs more C-Bills than a fucking medium laser, autocannons deserve better.

The AC2? Nah bitch it's now a AC5. Ammo is reduced to 40 so it can be rounded down to 20 or even 10. Yeah half ton bins are a go.
AC5? That's a AC10 now, and it's ammo is 30. Neither have a minimum range anymore, how the fuck does a bullet have a minimum fucking range?
The AC10? It's now a AC15. Yep, it can blow your fucking head off, deal with it. Also ammo per ton is 20. The AC20? Yeah just give it 10 rounds per ton and it's good.

Honorable mentions, Light Gauss Rifle does 10 damage, and the regular Gauss Rifle now carries 12 rounds per ton.
>>
>>98440874
At a glance, top five looks like McCormick, Nachomura, Buck, Kotow and Puentealto. Munroe's showing is also pretty good for a 4/5 in a SHD, so I'm satisfied with wherever Generic George ends up.
>>
>>98440845
The whole "light rifle does ZERO damage" thing? Yeah the problem with that rule is that it outright breaks the setting. Even small arms do fucking damage to BAR10, and Light Rifle's do 3 damage (unmodified). If 3 damage somehow gets reduced to zero things like LRM's, SRM's, small lasers, machine guns, HAG's, LBX clusters, all of these stop working.
>b-but
No buts. You can throw HEAT-FS in WW2 guns and they will fuck up BAR10. Modern day tank guns with the absolute broken tandem HEAT-FS and APFSDS would buck break battlemechs, never mind the horrors that are TOW's and Javelins.

>>
>>98440885
Easiest fix for the AC/2 is to just make it weigh 1 ton. A Machine Gun weighs 1/2 ton and does the same amount of damage. So you pay an extra 1/2 ton of weight to get better range and less ammo in the bin.
>>
>>98440885

Oh Ballistic Enjoyer of the Lake, what is your Wisdom about the Silver Bullet Gauss rifle?
>>
>>98440910
Well I decided to keep track of 4 categories so that someone won't be screwed just because they're in a light mech. Eleanor Gale, while in a Wasp, ended up being the best value for her tonnage, which is expected of the only 2 gunnery pilot in the battle. She also tops the accuracy chart. Very impressive.
Meanwhile, Janusz tops the damage dealt and attacks made categories, but we can see that his accuracy sucked. Accuracy is kind of a mixed bag, as a missed shot counts as missed shot whether the pilot needed to roll an 11 or 6. Which is why I wanted to include total attacks alongside accuracy. What's it matter to have a good accuracy if you make so few attacks?
It shows the most tried and true lesson of Battletech though, take every shot you can while still managing your heat. Morgan Munroe never once gained heat during the battle and sometimes attempted some terrible shots, but every turn she fired every single weapon she could. As a result, she took 5th on the damage dealt chart.
Anyway, stats are fun.
>>
>>98440953
Fucking easy. Make it simply a Mk 2 Gauss Rifle and treat it as a LBX autocannon, so you can fire solid (can benefit from TC's) and cluster (cannot).
>>
>>98440885

>>98441046
Is the PSR supposed to represent the armor being destroyed throwing off the balance of the mech or what? In my opinion a LRM 20 is going to be far less "jarring" than a AC20 impact.
>>
>>98441233

>>

>>
>>98441337
Virtually ALL infantry weapons should do ZERO damage to even industrial armor, with a very special exception. In Battletech both laser infantry and auto rifles can damage BAR10, which is the equivalent of dudes with M16/AK's shredding a MBT with rifle fire which is Command and Conquer levels of goofy.
>exception
The Mauser 960, which is a LosTech item and was the SLDF service rifle.... and weighed 10kg STRIPPED DOWN. Fully loaded it was 15kg. This is around the same weight as a Carl Gustav, which is fucking dumb, UNLESS it can also punch through armor the same way a CG can. This would make SLDF infantry units very fucking dangerous and remove the need for separate AT weapons, which is something that the Star League would do, completely ignoring soldier comfort and practicality because they can throw America++ levels of money into the military and ties into the current and past Advanced Combat Rifle programs, while the US military was limited by budget the Star League was NOT and could simply throw planets worth of GNW (Gross Net Worth) into a infantry rifle.

Infantry weapons were changed because there is no meaningful reason to have them on the board if they cannot deal damage to the main unit type in the game. Plinking for 1 damage with a pistol as a lone trooper/mechwarrior is such an uncommon edgecase it's weird that even idiots parroting stale memes keep coming back to it.

Retards then immediately shit their pants over a full strength platoon of troopers with rifles dealing like 15 damage to mech armor within 3 hexes; forgetting they deal tiny 2 damage clusters, meaning they're literally sandblasting the mech like the short-bus equivalent of an LRM-15.

On top of that; all in setting lore on infantry describes how the dominance of the battlemech favors smaller formations; so massive deathstacks of several hundred infantrymen that are decried as "overpowered" literally do not exist outside of perhaps the capital T, capital B, capital T again 'The Battle of Tukayidd' or similar generational furballs.

The only infantry that warps the game strangely with its inclusion is field guns as a method to skew long range firepower on boards with complete information about enemy positions and no options to shrug and say "well I guess he's got 20 gauss rifles pointed down the valley; we're just going to go around the long way and flank the retards"
>>
>>98441880
>Infantry weapons were changed because there is no meaningful reason to have them on the board if they cannot deal damage to the main unit type in the game.
Infantry was meant to fight infantry, never 'mechs. Nothing short of individual barely man-portable PPCs or Inferno SRM one-shot launchers PER PLATOON should be any factor at all against Battlemechs. They should be only marginally threatening against conventional armor, with specialized weaponry to allow such. They should be annoying to BA, enough to be unignorable but not devastatingly effective against. Infantry should be deadly to other infantry, with less effectiveness as protections increase. Even 40K understood the concept of varying degrees of unit type vs unit type efficacy, where if unit X isn't equipped with/didn't purchase a weapon that can hurt what it's fighting, then it doesn't ever hurt what it's fighting, simple as. A basic bitch rifle platoon armed with nothing but small arms and low-caliber firearms should not be hanging out plinking at Battlemech armor to chip the paint and nothing else.

Just my opinion, this shit isn't hard to revise to match the setting.

I think one issue infantry rules do have is that those big deathblobs are too durable. Shooting a PPC at an infantry blob should vapaorize most of the unit, not just turn one guy to a smoking crater while the people next to him are completely unharmed.
>>
>>98441955
>it should kill a entire platoon
Nigger fucking 155mm artillery shells don't fucking do this never mind a piercing anti armor weapon, this is the equivalent of saying a single .50bmg should kill everyone inside a room.
>>
>>98441976
>Nigger fucking 155mm artillery shells don't fucking do this
A standard 155mm high-explosive artillery shell has a lethal blast and fragmentation radius of about 50 meters, causes severe injuries up to 100 meters, and can disable heavy armor or collapse buildings through cumulative strikes.
>>
>>98441880
Actually if you bring units unequipped for the battlefield you deserve to watch them be unable to contribute to combat and do nothing but roll casualties. Splurge on some missiles next time.

It's also compounded by the anti-infantry weapon rule being highly selective, meaning a bug with lasers is almost completely ineffective against infantry and can get potentially one-turn shredded in response. It's just stupid and largely avoided by nobody running infantry anyway, which is why they're doing these support cards in the first place.

Field guns are indeed one of the worst units in the game though and are kings of the "nobody fucking playtested any of this shit" side of the game.
>>
>>98442005
>against unprotected infantry
>in the open
Flak vests and kevlar helmets combined with taking cover reduces that statistic dramatically, if single artillery rounds killed platoons then any war would be over in minutes.

>>
>>98442016
>field guns
Oh fucking god, please don't remind me of ultra AC10 and Gauss field guns, those legitimately wanted to drop WMD's on their positions it is that bad. AC2's with flechette ammo or frag lrms's CAN deal with them but who would pack a ton of ammo that is completely useless outside of infantry and even then very underwhelming?
>>
>>98442016
Battletech gothic of all places has a special option for lasers for anti abonimation use. Which could probably be changed to work for anti infantry work as well: in the end phase you can swap firing mode of your lasers to deal half damage to all armoured sources, but your full laser damage to abominations (or infantry in this case). At half heat. (Actually giving blazers and the like a niche).
Idea being you don't need as much power (thus, heat) to scorch large amounts of flesh when compared to BAR 10 armor.
So a large laser in anti abomination mode could do 8 damage to an infantry platoon at 4 heat, with the downside, that you need to specifically set it to its anti infantry setting, so if an enemy mech chooses that moment to get in close, you can't retaliate as easily.
>>
>>98442016
You could take a bug that actually has a machine gun or a flamer and push on infantry without even coming close to needing to trade. 15 damage from a full platoon assuming the maximum cluster roll is 7 groups of 2 damage and 1 orphaned point of damage. A Locust 1V would need 5 of those groups to hit the same location to even go internal. Conversely, the Locust will be dealing 4 to 14 damage with each machine gun; killing a mean of 18 troopers or wiping them entirely with a max roll.

The Locust will have a higher TMM, period, and can still stomp or fire its medium laser for extra juice. The bug is highly favored in this matchup, if it chooses to take it at all. Unless the infantry are on top of an objective or the only possible route, the Locust can dictate range entirely; no guessing, no uncertainty, 8/12 movement vs honest to god 0* movement.

>>98442072
Infantry don't have AMM though, so even at +4 TMM, and no gunnery investment on the infantry side, you're getting hit on 8+, the infantry will be in cover, and as you ran you will likely also need at least 8+ to hit.
>>
>>98442093
I mean, I 3d printed everything I needed already (Celestials stls out there are nice) but I will never tire to notice the stubborn CLG refusal to do anything right. At this point I'd even pardon Leviathan, it's a badly-written, badly managed useless system but it's less of a waste than 90% of what they're doing now bar rules revisions
>>
>>98440985

You still want it doing 1 point damage clusters, or the HAG's 5pt cluster mechanics? There's advantages for either in a world of Anti-Ballistic and Ferro Lammellar armour and HarJel III.
>>
>>98442096
So on a +4 TMM the Infantry hits on 8+s with a mean cluster of 17 for a total of 9 damage; that means on average they will only go internal if every cluster hit rolls the exact same location.

For the same odds, an average of 9 troopers die for each hitting machine gun and reduce the infantry's damage potential by a third.

This is still strongly in favor of the Locust at full tilt strafing them. At 8+s both throwing around ~40% chances to hit; but that's the only chance the infantry have; the Locust will be gone on the next shooting phase.

Not necessessarily.

ww1, ww2, korea and vietnam are all full of AAR's and BDA's of guys getting miraculously ignored by rt or mortar shells landing right next to them whilst guys 100+ m away from the blast got mulched.

Or corpses that are entirely untouched, seemingly dead for no reason, until disturbed and it is found the shockwave of a blast alone turned their insides to mush.

Then you have single solitary fragments somehow zinging hundreds and hundreds of metres away from a blast like a sniper's bullet and punching a neat little hole through some poor bastard's head, or slitting some other guys throat.

But yes. In general, rt etc. Is far, far more deadly to troops caught in the open than bt simulates.

I've heard people say MW5 has some crap mission designs and I guess I've gotten lucky up until today because I never really saw it.

So all three of these objective points spawn a lance of mechs right in front of your face once you get close enough. Like they literally do a falling animation and pop into existence. All three of these objectives spawn a mix of Rifleman, Urbanmechs, Partisan tanks and Igor VTOLs that have overlapping field of fire and also all immediately aggro. The objectives are so close together that you can't get near enough to one without setting off the others. Since the enemies don't actually spawn until you are within shooting distance of everything you can't draw aggro off either.

Also more Partisans and Igors spawn in positions that would put them directly behind you going about the mission in the intended way.

So how do you finish the mission without every 'Mech you bring losing its left arm from catching 30+ AC shells two seconds after everything spawns?

Run around the outside edge of the map, destroy the objectives from outside the spawn trigger and go home without seeing a single enemy. I know some of the older MW games have missions where this is the best way to do it (looking at you, MW4: Mercs where you have to rescue Katrina Steiner and you can do the mission in 30 seconds if you know in advance where to go) but this is just awful. It's a DLC mission too so a person hand designed this piece of shit.

>>
>>98442914
The solution is to have the biggest numbers possible (your favourite assault mech with max armour and absolutely no jumpjets), an even spread of weapons across the frame (so that that the ai can't focus-fire all your good guns off as fast) and to hang back/walk backwards as best you can to try to make the newly spawned-in enemies conga-line towards you so you can at least cripple them one by one. It sucks.
>>
>>98442914

>A resolution best described as a 'full color display'

>A description of enemy pop-in that I haven't observed in years since a bug fix on it of enemy types defined by their critical defensive weaknesses (Rifleman have light armor and can be focused down CT, Urbanmechs can have their AC peeled off with a light volley, Partisans struggle to get shots except at long range where the ERLLs and LBX should be making short work of them (unless they're modded also to have more health, in which case it's a skill issue) and Igors have critical weakpoints on the wing jet nacelles)
>A point of it being a high-value contract; missions that are notorious for being unstable when modded (or even in vanilla, such as when doing the Agincourt questline one of my lancemates would actually disappear like in the Tyler1 clips, complete with scream and echo).

In summary... skill issue?

The problem of BT infantry is the setting's completely borked force escalation logic. If there's a problem, somebody will pick up the phone and immediately summon the giant extraterrestrial steel men. Metaphorically, if there's a crowd in your Odessa, you don't call for the Cossacks but a battleship for a bombardment. And this logic is supported by TW play and fiction, where productively controlling escalation doesn't seem to be on anybody's mind.
Consider the litany of trucks, motorcycles, GI Joe-type vehicles, small arms-resistant IFVs and APCs that are implied to exist - those forces would normally make up 90% of the kind of Small Wars depicted in BT, yet they're all completely absent from the narrative. It's all mechs all the time. So when infantry does pop up, it's only in situations when shit has completely hit the fan and they're trying to turn away mechs from within rows of appartment blocks or trap them in some industrial zone set up to collapse. Which really isn't what anybody involved in the scrunch should be doing by any account, because that's how neat wars go bad. That's something that escalated too rapidly.
The scale of TW simulation doesn't help here. TW rules only model the most intensive couple minutes of a campaign, which is when infantry probably should stay mum and hunker down or stay the fuck away from the big boy's action. For what's being approximated in TW is an active land battleship confrontation and, I'm sorry, but there's no place for frogmen infiltrators on the high seas.
But frogmen tactics are the main way for infantry to even confront mechs, such as by specops infiltrating mech bays, or by having LRRP/LRDG-type formations assault dismounted lances during long marches. Thing is, and as much as the Princess loves that kinda shit, neither of those are TW actions.
>>
File: Truck shotgun.png (520 KB, 776x437)
520 KB PNG
>>98443356
Infantry might also place mines and assist in planing field gun ambushes along mech's projected route of advance, which, once again, isn't something that will be represented within the limitation of a TW game with any frequency. Never mind fiction.

But even if you escalate to strategic play, by the rules, an Atlas can still outrun most military jeeps and trucks. Infantry alone can't keep up with the operational tempo of mechs unless they use TW-grade vehicles, which neatly seagues into the next issue - cost. Infantry is in no way cheaper to run than mechs and the Terran Hegemony made sure that there's a mech for every job, which is why the Hussar (direct-fire support for infantry) and the Blackjack (anti-trukk stronk operations) exist and, from a gameplay perspective, both are cheaper and better than the non-mech alternatives.

So, if you're a local lord with a Taliban Biker Gang problem, you'll be saving money by requesting Com* to perform the old ritual and summon the ancient Blackjack from outer space. With their low cost, their universal availability through mercenary services and the high prestige of deploying them, you'll objectively only stand to lose if you don't make use of mechs. The damage a BJ barreling down country roads and byways, blazing away at motorcyclists will do to local infrastructure is of no consequence.

The calculus only probably flips in favour of infantry and field guns only when defending very high-value targets, the loss of which would cost more than whatever you're investing into those ground pounders. It's where their mobility don't matter and they can bring their brutal weight of fire fully into play. But FASAnomics don't reflect that and the RATs and fiction don't support the logic either, meaning depicting the locals standing their ground in defense of their livelyhood and communites in a TW game will only make you the no-fun asshole power gaming GM.
>>
File: 1778443508276476.jpg (389 KB, 2000x1981)

>>98443364
Fiction avoids the issue by claiming that bad war situations never happen, everybody just surrenders once the mechs show up, but how does that even make sense during the long periods when smash-and-grab raids were the main type of warfare? There's nobody to surrender to when they're just here to break your industry open and torch anything they can't immediately carry off. In a bad war, making war cost-prohibitive is the only way to survive.

Theoretically, there should also be additional political costs associated with mechs mass murdering infantry. No joke, most succ states have native assassin orgs taking interstellar contracts, some even have professional public schools training those up. For both mercs and occupational forces, grieving relatives' ability to collect cash should be something to keep in mind before wading mechs into the local militia, really. Countering infantry with infantry, mass with mass, would be less personally injurious here. But fiction is silent about the issue.

Mercs, raiding forces and pirates without infantry might just break off and leave at that point while conquering forces would probably de-escalate open conflict with the native militia into negotiations. War is politics by other means, after all, and under a feudal system, such as in BT, neither side has to actually fight to fulfill its primary objectives.

MWDA then was, in a way, an awkward attempt at getting proper narrative force escalation back into TW-level play.

How can a unit with an IS XL engine have 13 double heat sinks but only 12 engine critical slots?
>>
>>98443545
You're definitely misunderstanding something. Engine crit slots are not related to engine heat sink capacity. Higher rated engines can have more sinks in them up to a max of 10. The sinks inside the engine do not occupy any critical slots and it doesn't matter what kind of sink they are. If an engine can hold six sinks, it can hold six SHS or six DHS.

Every 25 Engine Rating you get a sink within the engine for free. This goes up to 250, where you get 10 Heat Sinks without paying for weight or crits. If a 250 wants an 11th, it has to spend the crits and weight, but if a 275 wants one, it only spends the weight and mounts it in the engine.
>>
>>98443721
The first ten sinks are always free weight wise. Crit wise it differs. Similarly, large enough engines have more than ten sinks slots so if you can pay the tonnage for that eleventh sink, but dont in that case need to pay the crit slots.

So in my noob group every game we've had 1 "commander" per side, which is really just a veteran 3/4 pilot while everyone else is 4/5. It's just been for fluff and story telling reasons.

In the advanced rule set, what are the gameplay implications of having a lance commander? I remember something about Command Mechs having computers that gave you initiative bonuses but I'm not sure on the specifics
>>
>>98444182
Also do you get any gameplay effects if you have a lance commander who is not piloting a command mech?
>>
>>98444195
Or even a penalty to morale if your commander dies?
>>
>>98444182
>>98444195
>>98444216
You are really asking about four or maybe five different separate things scattered around Tactical Operations and Campaign Operations books.

A commander may have better skills than an average pilot other than Piloting and Gunnery which can have an affect on a wide variety of campaign and scenario effects. Additionally, certain force organization and scenario rules rely on having a designated commander.

A command computer is a type of equipment that can do things, but that's separate from the mech quirk of "Command Mech", which can also do things.

The commander dying or being defeated is entirely in the provisions of the morale rules that are in a separate section of the books.

As for the simplest thing: First look into the rules for the Command Mech quirk in Campaign Operations. When a Command Mech quirked mech is active with a conscious pilot in a formation, they get a +1 to Initiative Rolls (non cumulative, multiple Command Mechs do not give more than a +1).

Command computers have weight and crit requirements. The quirk Command Mech does not.

That's what it feels like for alot of these mechs. They feel like they are armed like a mech 2 weight classes under them, and have largely unacceptable movement profiles for most of them. It's so hard to find configurations with jump jets just so I can get these things to not instantly die. It's ironic to me that so few celestial variants pack jump jets for mechs named after angels and such, like, no variants of the Malak have jump jets and therefore it's just wholesale a useless mech. I don't think partial wings existed at the time of the wobbies right? Even then, it does make me wonder why we don't have yet another spiritual successor to the celestial series that uses a partial wing system. Probably is to heavy and takes up to much space tho. Celestials already struggle to have decent armament due to the limitations of their gimmick. I think the only one that I've found to be adequately armed, have adequate speed, and adequate armor has been the Deva Achilleus which isn't even an official variant but a custom personal variant lmao
>>

>>98444736

>>
>>98444589
Again, they weren't smartly designed. Of all the Celestials, I'd argue that... less than ten variants are "adequate". Some are complete boondoggles (as >>98444616 put it, "new toy syndrome") and the majority are slow. And then you would need to pay for the elite pilots. And the C3i. You're flat out not running anything competitive with that. The retard that hyped them to you probably read some fanfiction in the official forums or something.
On the other hand, you don't run Mechs because they're optimal. You run them because they're cool, and the Celestials are amongst the coolest.
>>
>>98444844
>You run them because they're cool, and the Celestials are amongst the coolest.
Aye that be true. After having played the game for awhile, especially at higher tech levels, I find that the Crab just isn't that great of a mech, but man that's not gonna stop me from bringing the very fragile 27sl jump crab into battles against ilclan era mechs because I just like the crab that much. The celestials are a case of this as well, where even though I think that there are maybe like 3 variants across their entire family of mechs that are even vaguely useable, not even good, I still wanna run them from time to time. I guess not every mech can be the Lament, where they are both cool and highly optimized. You are right though, I think the stock variant of the archangel is the biggest boondoggle I've ever seen in the game and I mean it. Strip the heavy PPC off that thing and give it an array of ER medium lasers and it would at least be a much a still under armed assault mech but have more of a focus on close quarters combat with melee in mind if you can get it to close in. Instead it's armed like a medium mech and is slower than shit and has a useless melee weapon it'll NEVER use

I love alpha strike for this reason. Lances get formations and their quirks/spa's are 'free' for that reason, since EVERYONE gets them. If you have a company of a battle lance, recon lance and fire support lance, they're got their formation abilities. And the other guy with his ranger lance, striker lance and juggernaut (sp? Might be misremembering what that lance is called) lance has abilities for his formations.

This way you're not being munchkin-y having ONE guy who is the 'cool leader' Mary sue of a lance. Everyone can still be skill 4.

And alpha strike even has formation rules for those skills. Like, if you have a company, you can use formations so the leader of the whole force is a 3. Same for your opponents guys. All fair and balanced.

DFA question:

So the way I'm understanding this is that no matter if the attack fails or succeeds, the attacker lands on the target hex. If they succeeded, the target was either destroyed or pushed back a hex. If they failed, the target chooses a hex where to dodge.

If this is true...then what is stopping the attacker from abusing this to guarantee they are going to occupy an objective hex by the end of the turn?
>>

Battletech's like a simulator right up until it isn't, which is why almost all mechs are exactly the same but wearing different costumes.

They could've leaned towards this early on by focusing on things like leg types but instead they decided quad legs should be mostly pointless and no one uses them and they'd still be about the most thought out and popular alternate body type.
>>
>>98447035
To be fair, the actual climbing rules for level 3 and up do require hand actuators. So minimal arms mechs with no jumpjest are then extra miserable.

I find it incredibly funny that while 40k is infamous for being over the top in scale, the official numbers for the "unable to fly" Terminator armor is only like 400 kilograms empty/800 with an Astartes in it and it requires stuff like suspensors to maintain a somewhat decent speed.

Meanwhile, the standard for Battletech's "Medium" class of Battle Armor is a suit that weighs 1000 and that stuff can just be jumping around like a rabbit.

>>98446197
Terrain levels aren't generally supposed to represent sheer cliff-faces (there's rules for those in TacOps). Remember that a hex is 30 m wide and one level is 6 m, so even a 2-level increase (which is the steepest mechs can move up to without jump jets or the actual climbing rules in TacOps, which do require hands) is more of a fairly steep hill instead of a vertical cliff.
Now, that does kind of break apart when you deal with building since they use the same level-change mechanics originally designed with natural terrain in mind, unless we assume the architects in the Inner Sphere just really like ziggurats.

The tech stagnation of 40K is orders of magnitude greater than BT's; the AdMech stifle innovation to an extent that would horrify ComStar at its most zealous moment and are enslaved to 10,000+ year-old tech that they do not waver from. So even if they figured out a way to forge Terminator armor that weighed 10 kg empty with the same protection level and was flight-capable to boot, it would never be implemented because it would violate the STC of Terminator armor, hallowed by the Omnissiah's mathematical perfection for ten centuries.

I’m 50. I don’t recall ever encountering that word before two or three years ago outside of Reddit. Not one book, not one movie, not one game, not one trade publication, nothing. I had to look up how it’s pronounced because in 50 years of speaking American English I’ve never heard it spoken out loud, and I’ll bet you haven’t either.

It’s a word that thirdies and retards use in online conversations because they think it makes them appear intelligent, but the intelligent English speaker simply say penalty, because that word already existed to explain a rules related disadvantage.
>>
>>98446287
It wasn't hence why the entire inner sphere had entire companies of the same mech and modern armored forces are composed of 2-5 tanks of the same type. You don't see America fielding mixed platoons of an Abrams, a Bradley, an M18 Booker, and a Stryker MGS, closest you get is armored cavalry and even then platoons are specialized, just flexible in deployment. The First Succession War book even says great house lances should be one type of mech in the early phase, 2 types later, and finally generated with all random mechs, while the former SLDF should be all random as after the Hegemony Campaign they'd suffered such losses that consistent equipment became infeasible.

Only reason IS still has mixed lances is because of the game and nobody actually spreads out production and makes the same mech across 30 different worlds to protect their production lines from being ruined by one nuke.

>>
>>98449256
Sure, even the mightiest forces fielded in the time covered by the game pale in comparison to even the great house forces under the boot of the Star League.
>>
>>98449243
Even then a part of it is due to lack of infrastructure for building new mechs combined with the fact that mechs are often privately owned. If you come from Kuritan nobility and have a family Black Knight since your great great great great great grandfather served in the SLDF you aren't going to pilot a Grand Dragon for the DCMS even if they compensate you since the Black Knight is better and is depending on the era literally priceless. Likewise finding all the Black Knight pilots in a regiment and putting them in a lance together does little for logistical ease since they're drawing from the same regimental resource pool amd would entail shit like throwing a major and two captains into the same lance because they happen to own the same mech.

Either way, point is that mixed lances aren't superior, they're fielded because the vast majority of time they have no choice. You could probably field entile lances of Locusts, and something like the Davion Assault Guards could probably field lances of Templar IIIs because it's their signature mech and they're the best of the best with first dibs but an established merc outfit might not have 4 highlanders total let alone a means to reasonably field them as a single lance.

Realistically, if Kerensky had decided to stay put and play defense, the lion’s share of the SLDF would’ve probably disintegrated before his very eyes as its non-Terran components defected either to their native lands or simply to the highest bidder.
The exodus did not demand anyone turn their weapons against their homeland, only that they leave it. That aspect of it is what made it so palatable to the vast majority of the SLDF. Without that, the Exile Civil War simply becomes an inner sphere SLDF civil war much earlier.
Kerensky would basically be defending the hollowed-out shell of the Hegemony with a fraction of the SLDF at best, most likely getting dogpiled by every single Great House.
I don’t think there’s any timeline where the Star League is preserved, or even the Terran Hegemony. In fact I think Blake’s gambit was one of the few scenarios in which Terra itself was able to weather the 1st SW practically unscathed. In any other scenario where it remains the capital of an interstellar power it probably would have gotten nuked.
>>
>>98450900
It definitely wouldn't have come out unscathed, but even after the exodus there was still a lot of power in the Hegemony remnants. Blake did his thing to keep Terra itself safe, but planets like Inglesmond were actually holding out strong for a while. They just got blindsided by savagery they weren't ready for and their warship shipyard got got by a suicide attack they didn't think anyone was dumb enough to do. If more of the SLDF had been there they might have had the leadership initiative to keep their edge in space.
>>
>>98450943
Which is something we should always keep in mind, Blake also abandoned all the Hegemony worlds beyond Terra. A lot of them were trying continuance of government with a huge SLDF army sitting one or two jumps away doing nothing for their defense.

>>98450955
His plan was to try and take a few more worlds but the Houses moved faster than expected, keep in mind Comstar only took Terra in 2788 by which point the First Succession War had already been in full swing for an entire year. Additionally while Comstar did have a sizeable army the problem is it had virtually no navy compared to the Great Houses at the time and without a navy to contest the skies any land force was going to get nuked to oblivion which incidentally is what more or less happened to Inglesmond. They could hold Terra but they were in no position to project force outside of that system at the time, not helped by the fact that also what was left of the Terran Hegemony was mostly interested in setting up their own little kingdoms rather than trying to coordinate together.

Those are "if's", and rely on Kerensky being a moron, if he simply asked the house nation units to act as defensive units or if he used them against their rivals he could have kept the Hegemony at the very least alive. Comstar ruled a chunk of the Inner Sphere off of bullshit and being politically neutral, a Terra that had a Blake/Kerensky/DeChavililer political block would have cockblocked any Great House fuckery. Kerensky was outrageously popular in the Great Houses, if he declared Blake as the Steward of Terra (similar to the Republic of the Sphere) while he becomes Protector of the Relm (borrowing the Taurians government model) with Aaron DeChavililer as General of the Armies.

This hybrid political system with the Steward being a appointed position solely by Steward to Steward, while the Protector is a hereditary position subservient to the Steward. Instead of ComStar, you get a civic service role where surrender of your nation to serve Mankind as a whole combined with the hereditary warrior house of Kerensky and the enlistment of "House" units under General of the Armies is a neat 3 body polity that can last.

And leave all your family behind. While Kerensky was never going to be first lord of the Star League he would have all of the Royal (Hegemony) regiments with him and would certainly have enough power to consolidate something, especially with proper negotiating. The idea of just leaving the Inner Sphere shouldn't be reasonable for the vast majority of SLDF personnel, especially those who apparently owe enough loyalty to specific houses to side with them over Kerensy.

I wish more stuff happened with The Society. I know they were mostly like a Clam Word of Blake intended to be defeated, but I feel like there's so little about them when they should have had more science bullshit and lunacy than even the Word of Blake as they stop giving a shit about warrior caste ideals and honor. Instead they just kinda pop up, are le evil scientists and get wiped out as a footnote.

Hell if they're a secret society of mad scientists that have existed for generations they should have had genetic targeted bioweapons ready. Ghost Bears have next to no society presence in their clan? Remove a threat by unleashing a bioweapon targeted to genetic markers in every Ghost Bear bloodhouse and watch as 90% of trueborn Ghost Bears die vomiting blood. Every clan mech designed since 2900? They got a backdoor, you better get used to using old IIC and Star League mechs against them. A dozen clans' science castes cooperating on military breakthroughs? New laser and gauss weapons, superheavy clan mechs, swarms of protomechs, bring back LAMs.

If you just want some reliable muscle, Legendary Mechwarriors III has a good array of Mechs you can build a lance around plus an extra Griffin. Fermi Paradox in combination with West Taiwanese Dark Forest theory means those do not exist or, if they do, they have had the luck of having gone interstellar before their planet of origin was hit by a relativistic kill vehicle, making the survivors go silent.

You're never in a position where not pretending to be dead isn't the sole winning strategy, because if there's a more powerful civ out there, that's only because they're better at pretending to be dead than yours. So just stay mum.
>>
>>98453065
>Fermi Paradox in combination with West Taiwanese Dark Forest theory means those do not exist
Or they exist but don't communicate through means we can currently detect or don't care to broadcast themselves to others. If a species has existed for a billion years but 900 million years ago stopped using archaic radio communication all their signals could have passed us by and they weren't actively avoiding us.

There's so many assumptions that it assumes violence for the sake of violence. Also a dark forest isn't quiet, chinks would realize that if they ever left their concrete hellscapes, the whole analogy is dumb.

The only thought experiment that MIGHT be dumber is Roco's Basilisk.
>>
>>98453065
Even if every civilization wants to stay silent, they would still presumably try to expand and colonize other planets or systems, if for no other reason than to avoid putting all their eggs in on basket in case their planet does get nuked. And assuming every civilization didn't develop at the exact same time, there's always going to be someone who was first and ends up having the advantage of being able to colonize planets before anybody else was around to nuke them.
The end result is that when you first detect signs of another civ, you can never tell if they're confined to that one planet, or just an outpost of someone bigger than you (or even just having established enough off-world habitats or colonies that they can respond to you throwing an RKV at their homeworld by firing one at you, resulting in mutually assured destruction). In that case the winning move isn't to nuke everyone at first sign of them, but to stay quiet and observe.

So no argument and still no source cited? Very well, it’s been around forever in games so I’m sure that you’ll find one eventually. How is it pronounced? It’s okay if you need to look it up, I did too. 50 years and I’ve never heard it spoken once. I never even saw it in print until a couple of years ago.

While you’re looking that up, look up what a thesaurus is and what it can do for you. The terms you should be focusing on are synonym and antonym. You may find all of this a bit confusing but I can assure you that these words have in fact been around forever. I’ve even heard them spoken enough times that I knew how they were pronounced.

You don't win a shooting war in the Dark Forest, because it's loud and draws the attention of Civs that are better at hiding than you are.

Remember that humanity kinda sorta survived by threatening to tattle on the Trisolarians.
>>
>>98454015
>Making the survivors shoot back*
Fucking this! It assumes that the first signal you detect from a species is the only signal out there.
>>
>>98454242
Shooting an RKV is the least quiet thing you can do. Whatever you're using to actually launch it is the most energy intensive thing your civilization has ever done and the signals used to coordinate that are also bad. The survivors have no reason to not launch one back at you after they detect it incoming years before it arrives and calculate exactly where it came from.
>>
>>98454242
>You don't win a shooting war in the Dark Forest, because it's loud and draws the attention of Civs that are better at hiding than you are.
They stop being good at hiding the moment they shoot at you and reveal themselves. If you shoot at the first signal you reveal your position and are dead because not only do people know you exist but they know they have no reasonable recourse except extermination. Dark Forest Theory only makes sense on a level playing field.
>Remember that humanity kinda sorta survived by threatening to tattle on the Trisolarians.
What is this proof of? The fact that Dark Forest Theory works in the setting made for it? Hell if shooting can't be detectwd the moment the threat was made the Trisolarians should have immediately fired an RKV at earth, so even in a universe built around this dumb theory it doesn't make sense.
>>

>>
>>98453612
I'm not any of the anons already in this argument, but I have only ever heard malus used to describe negative modifiers on a chance for things to succeed or happen in a game. Either a minus on a dice roll or a reduction in percentage due to some situation or condition that causes said malus.
>>
>>98454280
I already pointed out that higher tiers of cultures exist in that universe. They're better at hiding, so they don't run the risk of getting shot at by lower tier cultures and they also have means of attacking that lower cultures can't yet trace back to them, but they still have to mind that there are cultures above them that are even better at hiding than they are.

Lower cultures starting a shooting war in your region might make enough noise for the next tier above to investigate the general region and then it's a coin toss whether they'll also notice cultures that have mastered signal masking to some extend.

The Dark Forest theory basically is a Theory of Everything in that universe, as natural laws, such as the speed of light, are the remnants of higher culture's attacks on each other.
>>
>>98454475
So why ever shoot? The moment you shoot someone above you notices and euthanizes your whole species. Using your own logic nobody should ever shoot for fear they'll be spotted.
>>
One thing no one seems to be mentioning is that, even at the best of times, it'd be years, decades, or even hundreds of years before anyone sees any signals. Then you have years upon years before any response comes, if ever. Space is big, and it's getting bigger and bigger by the second.
>>
>>98454521
That's the most retarded part, a lower culture not being able to detect you is not guaranteed and you won't know for sure until they shoot back. Now use more energy than your civilization has ever used in a single event to accelerate a big rock to an appreciable fraction of c, with the assistance of thousands of scattered organizations that have to communicate with each other across space to coordinate this herculean effort.
>>
>>98454552
Yes, which means that if anyone detects what you're trying to do to them, they have years and years to formulate their own big rock response. And why the fuck would they care if a third party also throws a rock at the place a rock is already going to? That just means they have a new target to back trace after they watch a rock fly through where the husk of their planet would have been if it hadn't already been hit by a rock.
>>
>>98454521
Higher tiers of culture have tech that clowns on the lower tiers so hard that they can afford the risk-reward calculation of whether to ice them or not. Shooting is still worth it if it keep the overall ambient noise below levels that will perturb the next tier of civ.

Civs that just stepped into the universe don't have a security blanket towards each other, don't have the survivor's experience of just going dark on their own and they aren't multi-planet and interstellar yet. They're also unaware of the higher tiers, so shooting first and early is the only solution for them.
>>
At what point was the Dark Forest theory and all this other crap proven pretty indisputably false in the setting of Battletech?
>>
>>98454646
>Higher tiers of culture have tech that clowns on the lower tiers so hard that they can afford the risk-reward calculation of whether to ice them or not. Shooting is still worth it if it keep the overall ambient noise below levels that will perturb the next tier of civ.
>Cultures have strict tiers with no variability about what is detectable
>Civs apparently can't detect a civ one or six "levels" below them firing off an RKV
What a clown setting.

>Civs that just stepped into the universe don't have a security blanket towards each other
They have the security blanket of not wanting to die. Again your logic is "if a rat sees something moving in the darkness the logical thing to do is attack because it could never end up biting a tiger's tail." Hell even the core inspiration for the idea only makes sense if one is an urbanite whose biggest exposure to nature is a park in the middle of the city. Organisms broadcast themselves constantly, a forest at night has fireflies lighting up their bodies, it has frogs croaking and birds singing for a chance to fuck, it has animals growling and hissing is defense or opposition to rivals. If the universe was based on a dark forest we should be flooded with signals that say "Hot space sluts in your area. Space sugar daddies want earth girls. Huttxhumanxgrey gigaporn. Massacre at Kentares recently by the Kuritans. Cadia cracked by big dick Abbadon. Asari are built for big human cock."

>They're also unaware of the higher tiers, so shooting first and early is the only solution for them.
And they can't possibly deduce that any society could be more advanced? Are they retarded? Also what's to prevent a top tier species from firing decoy signals to locate and exterminate these psychos?

When they started colonizing their second planet. The Blakists converted a mobile shipyard into the biggest gauss rifle ever seen and then used it to fire ferritic meteors (shaped and modified for the purpose) at planets to scour all signs of civilization off of them, but humanity has hundreds or maybe even thousands of planets and who knows how many permanent space installations (including a handful in random solar systems where no planets are colonized, like Gulf Breeze or Shady Palms). If some alien threw a rock at where they saw humans during the Terran Alliance days, they'd miss the majority of colonies which would be able to triangulate a return trajectory.

>every civilization comes to the conclusion that every other civilization is so genocidal that genociding them first is the only option
>but none of them ever conclude that they might not be able to detect every other civilization until they watch a civilization they can see (and therefore have shot at, exposing themselves) get destroyed by one they can't see (who are 100% going to see the attempted shot from the ignorant civilization because they can see and have already shot that target)

>Hell even the core inspiration for the idea only makes sense if one is an urbanite whose biggest exposure to nature is a park in the middle of the city.
Nah, the core inspiration of this particular interpretation clearly is 20st century West Taiwanese history. The repeated traumas of invasion and civil war, the great famine, the Great Leap Forward and the liberalization.
All continental Chinese have woken up at least once to find that they have been completely fucked over and them having no recourse and no resources to deal with what is being done to them.
It's such an extreme take that it really can't be read as anything other than political satire, and even a number of other Chinese scifi writers think it's dumb as a scifi concept and demeaning towards the allegedly sentient beings of this particular universe.

It's like Blind Sight - interesting concept for a novel, but you better not base your worldview on a story featuring ancient, hyper-autistic, non-sentient vampire hominids that have once been accidentallied by homo sapiens drawing crosses.

>but none of them ever conclude that they might not be able to detect every other civilization
They arrived at having enough data to formulate the Fermi Paradox, but they still lack the tools to gather the data required to speculate that maybe everybody's simply hiding and waiting for a chance to shank the other passengers on this big, beautiful train ride towards entropy.
That conclusion only comes natural when you assume that a society based on Mao Communism will be the last man standing on Earth and across all sentient life forms.

I think another thing about the Dark Forest and the Chinese mindset that people in English-speaking countries tend to miss is that it's not simply that there's an incentive to destroy other civilizations, but a serious lack of incentive NOT to. Despite having more overall brainpower than most ethnic groups, the Chinese are a fundamentally incurious people. They value learning, yes, but the learning they value is of history and philosophy, not science and discovery. They don't want change, they want to maintain their culture a certain way in accordance with their own ideals of stability. Once their civilization reached a certain level of technology they basically stayed that way for hundreds of years until the Europeans started fucking with them in the colonial era and they were forced to either catch up or get enslaved. Whereas many whites see the very act of learning new things as a goal in and of itself, the Chinese see it as an obligation. Science is an exhausting, onerous burden they must undertake to keep their country strong enough to assert its interests against foreign powers, no more, no less. In that context, once you have the power to destroy another planet, there's little reason not to. Learning from them will give you no satisfaction and may outright threaten the stability of your culture before even getting into the prospect of open hostility.
