I just thought a general thread about the games you're playing in would be kind of fun. What system are you playing? Are you enjoying it? What do you want out of it? Things like that. I'm just curious about others games. I'm currently in a Forbidden Lands game. It wasn't very well thought out and in fact we were just playing around the system to see if we liked it. I like it well enough, I'm a big fan of dice pools but I kind of wish character creation had a bit more to it. I rolled up a random character and got a Minstrel but because I rolled for everything I didn't have any kind of instrument. Just ended up with parchment, a bottle of ink, and a feather? Not even a quill, just a feather. I'm enjoying the hexcrawl aspect, never played a system with that as a focus and it's been fun so far. Haven't had a session in two weeks so I'm getting the feeling it's a dead game.
>>98445447I've managed to successfully restart our Masks of Nyarlathothep campaign this week that's been on hiatus for a few months due to various life stuff going on. Players had good fun, managed to finish a side quest concerning a Kenyan Shub Niggurath cult (with one of the PCs developing a dendrophobia), then they got back on the track with the main story and will probably be done with the Kenyan chapter in 2-3 sessions. Also one of the female PCs started a romance with a local hunter. Hope we'll be able to play regularly once more, it's a fun campaign with already around 20-30 sessions in and plenty more to goOther than that, I've been trying to get a Deathwatch campaign running, but we've only had a single session due to scheduling issues and I'm kinda sceptical whether it will really get going. Kinda bummed, since I've put lots of effort into prep for this one and I in general love 40k RPGs, but often have trouble with putting together a group to play them regularly. I was also supposed to run a sandboxy Elder Scrolls campaign, but one of the players had to disappear due to health issues just as we were about to get started. We'll see whether it actually gets off the ground once she gets back later this month.Outside of RPGs, just started a fresh Trench Crusade campaign this month, out second one. Very exciting so far.
>>98445447Been playing a 13th Age campaign lately. It's a decent system, but I have a hard time not comparing it to DnD in general. The creators are trying for a more thematic type of gameplay, but I don't know if they've actually succeeded or not.Overall, it's not bad and the finalized 2nd ed. of it really changed a lot from the first. The only real problem I have is that there's practically no one who has ever heard of it---let alone actually running an active campaign. Their discord is fairly active, but, I just wanna stumble across an organic thread somewhere that proves there's others that have heard of it.
>>98445447Currently playing a campaign of DND 5.5e fortnightly, but once that campaign ends we are going to switch to something else, I've been thinking about Mausritter. Does anyone have any relevant tips or tools for running a good game of Mausritter for someone who's main experience is DND? It will be the whole group's first proper OSR game, so I'm not 100% sure what to expect. I've read through the rules PDF but of course that doesn't always tell the whole story. I've also been playing in a local Blood Bowl league, I've lost one game so far with my Skaven, but I'm feeling confident about the next one.
>What system are you playing?I'm currently running a homebrew system where combat is roll to hit but damage and injury is logic based. No hitpoints, no armor score, a two handed warhammer to an unarmored human brain is instant death. An arrow in the torso may pierce an organ. Being hit with a cone of cold spell will inflict severe frostbite on exposed areas. Stabbing a wizards mouth can "silence" them.>Are you enjoying it?Yes. I thought the risk of sudden death for the PC would make the game seem wildly unfair. But it actually solves so many problems that plague TTPRG games>completely eliminates "I hit the orc with my sword for 8 damage" type of gameplay>suddenly the type and placement of armor matters a lot, the players are rewarded for paying attention to what they and enemies are actually using>magic became weaker in some areas, but much stronger in others. Electricity spells, for example, are very deadly whereas giving an enemy burn wounds with a fire spell won't kill them right away. That same electricity spell isn't going to do anything at all to a skeleton warrior.>absolutely no battles are tedious slogs>even a lowly goblin can kill a mighty hero with a well placed sword slash, even a lowly player can kill a mighty villain with a well aimed stab>What do you want out of it?It's experimental, I wanted to see what would happen if I made TTRPG combat less like a video game and more "Oh shit I just got shot in the heart with a crossbow bolt and I'm dying, HEALER!"
>>98445447>What system are you playing? 5E that has been adjusted for Dark Sun. My DM is not going to use 5.5E >Are you enjoying it? Quite a lot. >What do you want out of it?/tg/ would probably call me a "storyshitter" but I enjoy being able to affect the narrative with a level of freedom that no video game can do. Right now we're going through a dungeon that involves lore of one of the other characters and it's been great. I also like being able to completely make a character rather than just putting a face to the dev's character.

>>98445447Few things on the go at the moment but its summer so there's more irregularity to scheduling. >nusr homebrew dungeon crawler Into The Odd base but things from all over. They're just getting to level 3 and deeper mysteries of the main dungeon and a bunch of events are coming to a head so I'm stoked about that. Only get to play once every 2 weeks, less stoked about that. I largely want to get to explore dungeons with my friends and see what they come up with and how unexpected stuff comes out of it with a game that is easy to prep for and set up. >Netrunner on Jinteki Weeklyish with an old friend who lives far away I don't get to see enough. Its been a lot of fun catching up and watching him get better at the game, get past the learning curve and be fun about a game that can get a bit intense in a way I think has helped me out as a person. We're almost through all the old sets I played when it came out so there's a novelty there I'm excited for. >boardgames with my family once a month Mom, dad, wife. We've got a good bunch of games and rotate through that, add new ones as they come up and have been pretty solid about making sure its something everyone enjoys. Not usually anything too in depth, played Dragonboats of the Four Seas last and that seemed like about as much autism as my mom was interested in tolerating. My dad's been sitting on a copy of Race to Moscow for a while but I'm not sure if it'll work out and I might end up being the only one who'll play that with him.
>>98447817>Does anyone have any relevant tips or tools for running a good game of Mausritter for someone who's main experience is DND?Only ran it once, but overall don't sweat the small stuff much and run with a lot more on-the-spot decisions based on player input and treating the world as very tactile compared to more structured dnd. They're cute little rodents, so climbing and crawling and using everyday human things and terrain in creative ways worked well. The little pieces for inventory was cute but a bit fiddly. If you're into reading a primer Principia Apocrypha is short, has a player facing side too and fits with Mauseritter's vibe.
>>98448149But how the rules apply to the logic? You are not just improvising this as a GM whim, do you?
>>98456447Unless he posts the rules you can safely assume that's all it is and he's gotten two whole sessions out of it, and will be lucky to get 2 more before his group leaves.
>>98448149>roll to hit but damage and injury is logic basedOh, like a video game.>No hitpoints, no armor score, a two handed warhammer to an unarmored human brain is instant death.Sounds like a video game.>An arrow in the torso may pierce an organ.Ah, like in video games.>Being hit with a cone of cold spell will inflict severe frostbite on exposed areas.Video games.>Stabbing a wizards mouth can "silence" them.Yeah, like video games.>But it actually solves so many problems that plague TTPRG games.Just like video games, actually.
>>98448149Why do you want to eliminate players making decisions according to rules?
>>98457136I'm not.
>>98457157Yes you do.
>>98457184How? Cuz I'm not.
>>98447723I never got the chance to play it but I will corroborate for you that I discovered it when I first got into pathfinder because its SRD was listed under the sister sites on https://www.d20pfsrd.com/ lmao.It took me a while before I realize it was actually based on 4th edition but now that I've looked into it and its 2nd edition properly I like it a lot as far as DnD style systems go, especially since it scratches my itch of being 4e with a dedicated Necromancer class.
>>98457190Yes you do.
>>98445447Currently running 1 game and playing in 2 games, soon to be running a second game>Call of CthulhuFriends first time running CoC or really anything not d&d. It's been a lot of fun, it's a very, very pulpy 50s sci-fi thing. We're stuck in a pocket dimension right now about to use a bunch of fish men to fight a bunch of Sasquatch.>ShadowdarkBuddy was running us through Sunless Citadel, it was a lot of fun but last night, right before the end of the dungeon, we hit a trap and tpk'd. Super hilarious, very fun. Now I'm commiting to run a Prowlers and Paragons game for this group.>MausritterSome young coworkers from my last job really wanted to play an RPG so I offered to run something for them, I picked Mausritter because it's so damn simple, it's been a lot of fun so far, they are getting into the ttrpg mindset, and ive just been using the locations from "The Manor" boxed set. They just figured out last session that they can use some of their loot to turn an adventure site that they defeated into a fortress if they fully clear it out, so I think that's gonna be the rest of the campaign. We're having a couple of off weeks while one is away, I think I'm gonna run either Monsters and other childish things or Masks for two of them while the third is out of state.I've gamed more this year than the last few years combined, feels good dudes.
>>98447817>Does anyone have any relevant tips or tools for running a good game of Mausritter for someone who's main experience is DND?Don't over rely on saves as a stand in for skill checks. Just allow things to play out logically. I got the boxed set so I use the turn tracker, I'd recommend printing one up, it's very helpful. There are several good adventure sites out there, even the one in the core book is pretty decent. A six to ten room dungeon is plenty for 2-4 hour adventure if you include the general rpg paperwork (shopping and shit), and travel to and from the site.My players were absolute noobs so I gave them some reroll tokens, it's probably kept them alive but they've still had several very close calls. You need to be strict with encumbrance, it's sort of the core of the system.Don't be afraid to make rulings. A lot of people coming from the feel the need to make everything a roll. You don't need to do that. If you're really unsure, instead of a skill roll make it an [x] in six chance on a d6.All in all, it's one of the more fun games I've ever ran. I really like the simplicity of the encumbrance system.
>>98448149>I wanted to see what would happen if I made TTRPG combat less like a video game and more "Oh shit I just got shot in the heart with a crossbow bolt and I'm dying, HEALER!"But not only did you not do that, the idea of "oh shit I just got shot in the heart with a crossbow bolt and I'm dying, HEALER" is completely like a video game.
>>98445447>What system are you playing?AD&D 2e 'Masque of the Red Death'.>Are you enjoying it?Very much so. My Mystic witnessed five characters (four of which were other players) get crit and nearly bleed out. I had to hurriedly do medicine checks to stabilize them while our shotgun wielding Adept blasted a hole through the thing that was attacking us. It was awesome.>What do you want out of it?Our DM is hoping this will be a multiyear campaign and something we can return to in between other games. I would really like that as the last time we did that was from 2010 to 2015 when we would play Star Wars Saga on and off between other games.I'd also really like to start back up my OpenD6 game which we finished the first large part of about three years ago. I've been thinking a lot about what I want to do for the next part and would love to pick it back up in 2027.
Ehat should I say? It's 5e 2014 Lost Mines of Phandelver. Yes, I regret starting it. We're still fighting the Redbrands. Amazing how dangerous enemies they turned out to be. They almost downed all the players two sessions ago.
>>98445447In four games at the moment across 2... let's call it 2 and a half groups. Group 1>Mage the AscensionOur thirdish attempt to play this game and it finally seems like everyone is onboard to the point they need to be. Current iteration has been going on about 11ish months. We're a group of early awakeners in the modern era roaming the US in an RV and codifying early mage laws as we set about forming an arcane governing body. Playing a pseudo technocrat as the 'government's' head of 'matter'>Blasters + IntrigueA diversion from mage set in the far future of our WoD. A sci-fi escort quest across the surface of terraformed mars. We're trying to get an artifact of 'the ancient masters' (our mages) from one side of the planet to the other as war breaks out. >Group 2 5e game in a homebrew setting, been on hiatus for awhile around level 11. Playing a goblin cleric that can best be described as the god hopping of benny from 'the mummy' and the reluctant heroics and constant terror of courage the cowardly dog. (pic related, some sketches a friend made for me)>Group 2.5Ongoing D&D game thats been massively retooled by the DM. Contains many of the players from group 2 and takes place thousands of years into the future of the last campaign he ran where all the worlds of the solar system have been shattered. Its a good time but really fucks with my sleep/work schedule.
>what I'm running An Elder Scrolls game, taking place in (and just a bit before the events of) Morrowind. Only one session so far, but it's going well and my players seem to be enjoying themselves. The system is GURPS, using an Elder Scrolls conversion I made a few months back. It seems to work well enough. I have a Dunmer Redoran Knight, a Khajiit Monk, two Breton Mages, a Dunmer Archer (who has some good spellcasting, too), a Nord Barbarian, and a Redguard Swordsman. >what I'm playing in I'm a faction player in a BrOSR GURPS/ACKS game, which has been just awesome. The GM is using this game as something of a trial run and is working out mechanical kinks, but it's been super cool influencing what the adventurers are doing while engaging in our own faction-level power struggles. The campaign looks to be approaching a conclusion, as war has broken out and armies are on the march. There's an alliance of humans, dwarves, and gnomes against Fainil (demon-blooded drow). We'll have to see who comes out on top!
>>98462507I dream about running campaigns inspired by silve age rpgs such as Morrowind, but stuggle to make a conversion or homebrew for it.Is it not a problem to run for 8 players. For me 6 is always have bren a hard cap.
>>98464966Well, one if the reasons I like GURPS is that it supports stuff like this, but I still made mu own conversion to facilitate it. You need familiarity with GURPS to play and understand it, and it's not a 100% direct translation of TES mechanics (for instance, I include a lot of spells not in TES vidya), but if you're interested, you can see it here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1WIw-pp8LBOfO9JbeKCtgRxXv8wVrdN-w>Is it not a problem to run for 8 players. For me 6 is always have bren a hard cap. It's a bit much, but it's not so bad. All the players are good people, so I'm not doing any babysitting or policing, just running the game. I expect some attrition over time, so recruiting extra at the start can prevent that from being an issue. Also, 7 players lets me do a Seven Samurai/Magnificent Seven session, which I'm a big fan of and does very well in GURPS.
>>98457192Finally someone else who has heard of it! A player at my table is playing a Necro actually! It certainly is a decent class, they hold up pretty well..
Began running my first long term campaign with EZD6 (i converted another one to the system halfway through it) and my players are really enjoying the freedom especially with the spellcasting systemRunning it has been really smooth very few times was there a rulings issue or confusion on what you can and can't do with each characters class and everyone enjoyed the hybrid setting i made to use the 2 playsets i had for the gameI really reccomend the system to anyone who enjoys rules lite games
>>98467378The campaign is set in a world where the spaces between civilized society (towns, cities, kingdoms, etc) is a post-apoc type wasteland with wild and varried climates and enviroments known collectively as The Badlands (named after the bruce springsteen song)PC are known as Brazen, who are those who make their livings in The BadlandsBounty hunters, escorting folks, dungeon crawling, etcTheres no BBEG its just quest after quest and thr players are free to finish their indvidual character arcs as we play and make a new one for the setting
>>98445447Group 1.>What system are you playing?Pokeymanz, a savage world based fan made system designed at recreating the pokemon anime and manga type feeling mixed with harder mechanics from the games.>Are you enjoying it?It's been a lot of fun and honestly I'm surprised at how much whimsical joy I'm feeling playing it, as silly as that sounds. The group dynamic is hitting a fun mix of "one person is the designated older and responsible one but still a weirdo so he fits in with the three other weirdos, two of which are younger" type thing you'd see in an anime like that. There's a lot of narrative freedom and "this is cool as fuck in the series that inspired us, if you don't like it you don't have to use it but we enjoy rule of cool in our design" type ways to make normally useless pokemon for the competitive circuit still good.>What do you want out of it?A fun system to play with friends, enjoy a mutual like of Pokemon the series and live a little bit of the fantasy the games give you.Group 2>What system are you playing?Dark Heresy 1e, as the GM.>Are you enjoying it?Hell yeah my players are clueless at times but that's half the fun. >What do you want out of it?To give my 40k homies a fun time roleplaying.>>98445565If I wasn't in two other groups I'd look at some interest in the Deathwatch stuff, sorry to hear it's not going the best.
>>98467518>If I wasn't in two other groups I'd look at some interest in the Deathwatch stuffDeathwatch can be amazingly fun and cool, but it's a tough one to run. FFG 40k system is already on the crunchier side and Deathwatch adds a whole additional layer of Space Marine centric rules, effects and mechanics on top of it. Astartes also aren't very obvious characters to roleplay and designing scenarios for the system takes so getting used to. So it really helps to have strongly involved players. But when it does work, it's absolutely top tier grimdark power fantasy.sorry to hear it's not going the best.It happens, two out of three players want to play something once in a while, but don't have all that much time, so I guess it was to be expected. I'll get a nice group running again someday!Good luck with your DH, I've had some cool sessions of that one as well
>>98445447DnD 5.0e x2, Homberew ADnD hack x2, Knave hack. I enjoy the Homebrew AnD-like hack the most and 5e ToA comes close second. Knave I have only had 1 session yet so no idea. I like the downtime dollhousing, positioning and training my characters. The waargame gives nice context for doing this, and I hear that I would enjoy proper Ars Magicka since thats 100% this.
It's been a couple of years since my D&D 5e group dissolved due to the couple that was the pillar of the group moving to another city, sadly.Thankfully, I've been playing in a D&D 3.5e campaign since 2023 (I think?) semi-weekly.We fucked up a couple sessions ago and the big bad evil black dragoness is now fused with the fungal hivemind that spans not-Australia and is stating to infect the realm of dreams, all the while The Darkness is happening (an eclipse where a bunch of evil shit happens).Last session we were saved by a Spelljammer crew then we (me, the cleric, and the wizard actually) almost got done in by a group of shadows.Shit's dire and I'm loving it.
>>98467389Interesting. Going to decide between OSE or some MiniSix/OpenD6 game for a public group. Might be people who are retarded that show up so I'm leaning towards D6 instead of OSR stuff. Any recommendations?
>>98445447>SystemAbout to play Perfect Draw here in like 10 minutes with the lads.>EnjoymentFunny, another player asked me the same thing just now because the GM is worried we aren't despite one guy literally being obsessed with the game, despite his character being fucking miserable in game. It's fun, especially when we actually duel, but with like 6 people in the game it's tough to get everyone to have one and there's a bigger focus on the narrative and characters I guess.>What do you wantI have cooked some cool shit with the GM. We just finished a major arc where me and another PC who is a Turncoat fought the big bad of a card game street gang basically in a 2v1 and through plot bullshit and me pulling out my best moves after we burned the NPC's response moves (basically counterplays they have a finite amount of to nuh-uh your shit with a contested check) my ace steamrolled him and my PC gave him a big speech and it was fun times.
>>98476827Sorry for late response I'm using EZD6 a system published by runehammer gamesIts a rules lite system that has a few "playsets" the quirky terms used for stuff might turn you off but trust me its a great system for fast paced games I use the core rules and "Wasted World" books It can carry a campaign so long as you understand that it handles progression differently since the game has no math
>>98448149I'll be honest, I have played similar games at cons and had trouble keeping engaged for the 4 hours they last>>98445447I'm running a GURPS fantasy game and playing in a 5.5 game, honestly don't even like fantasy that much but it's not like I have players who like scifi
>>98483666I like Sci-Fi but not GURPs If you wanna play index card RPG let me know :D
>>98467378>>98467389Got an EZD6 session coming this week along with running an ICRPG one shot and im playtesting someone elses gameIm actually starting to worry im running out of time to be playing all these games!
>>98447817>Does anyone have any relevant tips or tools for running a good game of Mausritter for someone who's main experience is DND?there was some solid advice alreadyone thing that got me puzzled and is not very well explained in any ItO-like ruleset is why ItO doesn't have save-rolls mods that would reward player's cleverness or punish direct dullnessThe answer is in ItO author's blogpost and it boils down to affecting rewards or failure costs- if the player is cleaver about approaching a task it should increase the rewards, or decrease the costs of failure, or both- if the player is particularly reckless, it will make the failure costs more severe or rewards not as importantsay a player is trying to convince a rat-king to help with an owl problem and is playing out an arrogant speech, at best he will not be put in prison, but if he is being polite and also finds compelling arguments/evidence, the king will listen and might simply send a smaller helping force as worst outcome of a failed rollSo that's how the consequences of save-rolls are supposed to play outthough Mouseritter specifically has advantage/disadvantage you can fall back to if you are out of ideas
>>98445447>Not even a quill, just a featherthat's one knife cut from being a quill though innit?
>>98494630care to write up some small reports and maybe a comparison between EZD6 and ICRPG?
>>98482711Wonderful thank you. I think I'll go with MiniSix for now since I found a trove of that and Open D6 stuff. But yes I'm expecting progression not to be like OSR, it'll be tied to the world and campaign.
>>98496887Mini Six is great, I like that I can use any other D6 system content with it almost flawlessly with minimal conversion, npc stats, vehicles, etc.The Badlands setting sounds pretty cool.
>>98495697Both are rules lite games by the publisher Runehammer but are both written by different authorsICRPG has 2 editions but only master edition is worth playing It is a D20 system that started as a huge DnD 5e rules mod but was stripped of any DnD traits and published as an original game with 5 campaign settingsIts one half a game and another half a DIY D20 system made to be easily modded into any type of game or setting think of it as a less modular and less realistic GURPS cloneEZD6 is a much liter game just being a D6 die pool roll to meet or beat system forgoing stats all together in favor of a metacurrency system utilizing Karma, Hero Die, XP, and Power Die which can be earned and cashed in for various effectsThe game has 3 main books with a 4th being published soon It features the core book which explains all of the rules in a fantasy setting, a post-apoc book which is expands the rules for that setting, and a horror book which features 2 horror settings including 1 with unique meta currenciesI enjoy both but ICRPG is the deeper game but EZD6 is the easiest to run and explain and if you use multiple books together the depth goes up by a bit
>>98497372>The Badlands setting sounds pretty cool. There's more lore to it but its more or less a variation on the dark sun concept but with more urban fantasyTheres magical androids powered by crystals, cities with huge factories, alongside shiny elven kingdomsIts gonzo so dont take it too seriously just rememberHumans dont like demihumansDemihumans dont like humansOnly humans can be psionicAnd nobody likes a psion
>>98497490Is EZD6 compatible with any of the OpenD6/WEG/MiniSix stuff?>>98497372Thanks, I have a setting already lined up. I'll be converting Red Tide from Kevin Crawford (for LL) to MiniSix kek
