TI4 on Board Game Arena is finally out of alpha and into beta, and i must say, it handles way better than i thought it would be. Everything is compartmentalized into its own submenu, the map view has extra useful features like highlighting the resources and units. It even supports asynchronous play, perfect for freaks like me with not enough time on the weekend for a full game but enough breaks at work to piecemeal a match..
>>98454373Interesting business choice since I'm sure 95% of people will now play in asynchronous rather than in person as that requires a whole campaign in itself.
>>98453916>Games for this feel? Or is this terrible game design? The King Is Dead. No one is any specific faction, everyone is trying to position their control of various factions. Everyone has the same cards. Everyone has to balance trying to get their backing to work out the best, undermine each other's and either keep things stable enough the french don't invade, or destabilize things enough they do and be best positioned for it. The Grizzled would be a more literal interpretation. Coop card game where you try and not die as a group in ww1 by distributing who's getting fucked over the most for long enough to make it to the armistice.
>>98453916You've outdone yourself anon, good song edit, good pic, good TQs.>What *is* a board game?A miserable pile of mechanics! Nah, an activity in which players volutarily try to overcome obstacles for enjoyment, with certain components being part of the experience (defining these components is too tiresome).>Games for this feel? Or is this terrible game design?I suppose team trick takers with bidding at least somwehat fall into this category? It's interesting conceptually interesting, but I wouldn't know how to implement it. Wouldn't count semi-coops as that seems to easy.
>>98454373I am a big endorser of bga, Ti is one of my favourite games but fuck no. Playing this digitally is already terrible, if you add turn based to the mix the essential component that makes the game, people and live interaction with them, fades away almost completely, leaving a mechanically mediocre and unbalanced game. Why would you do that?

>>98456194Played captains chair multiplayer for the first time. Took around 2h, not as long as I feared it might but far from ideal as well, especially because the downtime is quite high, but I expect that to shave off 25-35% with experience. Got completely destroyed as Shran by Picard, partly because I was focusing far more on him getting the rules right than my game, partly because Troi is insane and he used her really well. Great experience, looking forward to trying again!Later I played >solo trying out sisko and had way less fun. Deck seemed like it was going nowhere and needed to play the market well. Eh we'll see

Any game with table talk and negotiation are a critical part of the game, I can pass on. La Famiglia, Hegemony, TI4, HiS, etc - no thanks.

But I'm glad there is a string of new editions of older, long oop games coming out, or just new editions. New games just don't draw me in. A friend just bought Pax Pamir and invited me to play. I'm finally taking the bait. Saw some overview to get a grasp of the game and it has "unbinding negotiation", the only thing that worries me. So, memes aside, it is ACTUALLY GOOD?

Any anons willing to give their input on Black Rose War? It sounds fun.
>>98460807>unbinding negotiationI'm assuming you mean agreements are non-binding? Of course they aren't and that's also why you should never agree to anything in Pax Pam. In fact, as soon as someone asks you if you would be willing to do something (ie move forces to a location and attack), if they move before you, you should totally tell them that you will and then after their turn do the opposite. Anyone asking you to do something during your turn and before theirs is doing the same thing to you.Best strategy plays are to buy blues, buy blues that allow you to place tokens, and buy blues that let you place tokens and also change your faction. Having cards that let you change your faction at the drop of a hat keeps you from having to do it the hard way and gives you the flexibility to not be left out of dominance points. Tokens are always good.
>>98462319This anon is giving you really solid advice.Pax Pam is all about being able to pivot, but you are so often beholden to the market (and what your meagre coffers can afford) that it can feel like you are completely at the whims of chance. But get blue cards, increase that hand size. Stock up on various patriot card or spy impact icon cards over the course of the game and now you can actually take advantage of opportunities to twist a knife or jump on the bandwagon for second / third place points that you contributed nothing to setting up.
Um…. HeroQuest came out in 1989 and then all its expansions in the few years that followed. So why people still manufacturing new games, and why are y’all all kickstarting them?
>>98462461does heroquest have trains? does heroquest let you buy shares in public companies, and fight for control of them to see who profits the most? does heroquest have bankcruptcy?
>>98461544WotR, 10 out of 10 timest. owns both
>>98462141I bought rebirth. It was ok. Per se a good skirmish game with cool ideas that was made worse by (1) the incessant use of plastic, it's so incredibly cumbersome and tablehog-y and (2) the schools are so incredibly poorly balanced. Egm Nightmare was thematically neat but nigh useless for anything other than making the rose win the game.As said, it's a good, even excellent skirmish game. I did sell it and the apocalypse expansion after a while though, I got it out far too rarely and I do blame the overproduced components for that. Would've been much, much better as €50 game that's half the size and uses standees and maybe 4 minis for the heroes
>>98462319>>98462428In other words, you must embrace the mindset of a duplicitous Afghan tribal.
>>98453916Thoughts on Tea Witches?
>>98462912>>98462461So bear with me. What about a game where you are the Adventurer's Guild and you and other Guild members are investing in adventuring groups that then go out to caves, towers, and lairs to find treasure. Then those adventuring groups pay out dividends from the treasure they obtained along their route. These guilds need carts to haul their treasure - 2 horse carts, 3 horse carts, 4 horse carts, etc. Sprinkle in some thematic stuff - you can't hit the same lair in more than one OR so going first in turn order is better for runs, private companies are magical items that benefit your party but have limited charges (steam cart that travels further, wand of reversing that lets you hit a location for full payout, etc)Call it 18AQ or something. You could do a retheme of the early Roman Republic too where companies were generals fighting barbarians and establishing outposts with funding from senators and consuls. Call that one XVIIIXX.
wtf is this
>>98464027>XVIIIXXNow listen here you little shit!
>>98464038That's the answer to the question of "What if Project L but less interesting?".

>>98465540Either vanilla, Lords, or Lords + Kings. I don’t like Warriors because I think its additions don’t really enhance the part of the game it’s targeting. There are much better wargames for moving armies around a map. However, no game does characters the way WotR does and Lords and Kings both make that side of the game even richer.

Had never before seen people blatantly smoking crack or OD'ing in broad daylight in one of the busiest financial sectors of the city, and then it became a regular occurrence as the homeless population exploded. Chinatown and its offshoot streets in particular have gotten really bad, and wouldn't you know it that is where the bush shitting was happening.Last night stuck out to me mostly because it is a cavalcade of personal firsts despite using the downtown public transit for almost twenty years.>you should start a more rural lifeHaving worked in / taught kids in several rural communities and First Nation reserves of the province, I will pass for now.>>98468978>Sounds like Pariswell at least you got the language right!Back on topic, what are anons' plans for this weekend?

>>98471072Based on your group favorites, they'll probably love it. The core gameplay is a good framework, but you really need to be into the metagaming and asymmetric stuff to get into headier strategy and tactics of it all. That being said, make sure to have a solid first teach and have everyone explain their faction abilities at the start. The game can be very swingy, and you really need to know what everyone is capable of from the start.

Board games have changed.Gone are the days when game night meant rolling dice, buying properties, and hoping everyone else gets bored before you do. Modern board games have evolved into immersive experiences where strategy, storytelling, negotiation, creativity, and a little bit of glorious chaos come together around the table.Imagine building a civilization from scratch, leading a team of explorers into the unknown, running a thriving vineyard, solving a murder, or competing with your friends to create the most beautiful kingdom—all in the space of an evening. What makes modern board games special isn't just what happens on the board. It's what happens around it.Phones go down. Conversations start. People laugh, bluff, argue over impossible decisions, celebrate ridiculous victories, and occasionally discover that their closest friend is surprisingly ruthless when victory is on the line. There is also a game for almost every kind of person. Love puzzles? There are intricate strategy games. Prefer storytelling? There are narrative adventures. Want something quick and social? There are clever party games that take minutes to learn. Looking for a deep challenge? Some games can provide dozens of hours of increasingly sophisticated strategy. And unlike many forms of entertainment, board games don't simply give you an experience—they ask you to create one.Every game becomes a story that couldn't have happened exactly the same way anywhere else. The unexpected alliance. The spectacular comeback. The terrible decision everyone warned you about. The move that somehow worked. That's the magic of modern board gaming. It's not about escaping reality by staring at another screen. It's about escaping into a shared world with other people. The best board games don't just fill an evening. They give you a reason to remember it.
Has anyone tried a 6p Modern Art variant? The one I saw simply adjusts the amount of cards per turn, but if it was that simple, why wouldn't it be included in the release in the first place? Makes me think it's not fun at 6p, but maybe someone can chime in.
>>98482006Technically, 1830 released in 1986 so i guess that's when board games changed from "roll dice and get bored" to "every game night is a story to remember". The rest of the industry has just been slow on catching up to the greats.
>>98482006Holy slop
>>98482205>Has anyone tried a 6p Modern Art variant? No, why would you. You want a sweet spot between the fun auctions have and the strategy of playing different artists. 5 is already pushing it on the latter point, I can't imagine 6 being anything except more unpredictable.Modern Art sucks anyway because of the 2x auctions. Knizia is a hack.
>>98482514Medici is good.
>>98482556If you like price-finding and police bidding throughout the game, then yeah, Medici is good.
>>98482006At this point I can tell ai slop at a glance, but only if the poster put in virtually no effort. As is the case here.
>>98482596Yes, I do like auction games.
>>98482617Weeeeee woahhhh n+1 bidding so exhilarating! Play better auction games like The Estates.
>>98482006Slop, but I actually don't disagree with anything and it honestly made me remember why bgs are so fun
>>98482514It certainly is the most wonky part of the game but I'd argue it's necessary to give it more fluidity. As in, how long a round goes is more variable which I think works in favor of the game.
>>98482986It does in the sense you describe, but it introduces massive swings and wrecks the skill aspect. A late game 2x can obliterate any marginal smart plays made over the course of the game, and it's pretty much down to luck whether you have any 2x'es and whether they're worth a shit.If you have something like this in the game it needs to be justified by not being broken. The option of just passing the 2x to the next player is straight up retarded.I'd rather the game throw in a random card on the table in a "neutral gallery" after every go-around to vary up the market.
>>98483175Here's another idea. Replace 2x auctions with "hype"/"marketing" cards. You play it in addition to any normal auction to make the artist more desirable, but you don't get any money for it directly. There you go, took me 5 minutes.Though it still doesn't solve the problem of drawing a whole bunch of them and being fucked out of options.
Is zoo vadis based at $45, or should I get Chinatown for $90 on the secondary market? Or should I call stores to negotiate the price?

Let's see if /bgg can help me because the dude at my lgs was of no use. A friend's bday is close and we want to get him a board game. We want a game he can play with us (normally 3 other people) as well as with his gf (who is an insufferable bitch, but that's a different issue). We can play whatever, we got 4-5 hour games and quick ones as well, but he mostly likes euro games. We also play wargames, but he mostly plays chill games with his gf, mostly cascadia, wingspan, the typical games you play with most girls. The thing is, we're having issues finding a game he can use in both situations and he doesn't have, so any suggestions are well received. This is what he has>cascadia>wingspan>parks>through the ages>viticulture>7 wonders>forum trajanun>fate of the fellowship>dune imperium>terraforming mars
>>98488225So a game he can play 4p with the bros and at the same time a cozy 2p experience? Unsure if that's really possible. If getting him two is a consideration (which I assume it isn't), Harmonies for his gf and DUNC imp for you.Alternatively, Tigris&Euphrates is great at 2 and 4 but might be a bit too confrontational and thinky for the GF. Great western Trail also would fit the good at 2 and 4 condition and isn't too heavy
>>98488225>>98488361Oh also for something shorter (~50 min) but still with a bite and scales beautifully, Fromage. Been shilling it a few times recently, it really is great for casuals as well as hobbyists. If you don't mind the theme.
>>98488225Idk Hanami maybe? Arnak? Coffee Rush? Rebirth? Tough question
Are board games solved for the most part?I'm trying to think of anything new that's came out this year that's worth owning that is a unique experience and isn't a remake. I guess there's compile which has been quite good, toy battle but that's basically just updated stratego. Feya's Swamp? Actually that's an old game, now that I think about it.CMYK brought in the big "not actually just gambling" craze with magical athlete and hot streak, but it's basically just a more streamlined camel up and whatever that betting horse game is.I'm somewhat out if the loop, but it seems like the games worth playing are just the greats rehashed such as T&E, Mexica, etc
>>98488225>Wondrous creatures>Civolution
>>98488426>but it's basically just a more streamlined camel up and whatever that betting horse game is.>not knowing magical athlete originaly published in 2004
>>98488225>2 to 4 playersIt is beyond rare to see a game that is truly great at both ends of the spectrum. The only game that comes to mind is Spirit Island, and I'm not even a great fan. The main reason is that it doesn't become a different game at different player counts, you can just adjust the difficulty if it goes out of whack at different counts.Multiplayer solitaire games are trendy to shit upon here, but that's also the most likely type of game to work at wide player counts. If it is about autistically building your tableau or whatever and barely looking at what others are doing, then the player count is not as impactful as something like GWT, which someone else mentioned and which is awful at 4. I would legitimately recommend the pure autism that is Roads&Boats. Maybe Rosenberg heads can recommend some of his games, they seem like the type that would work in this vein as well.
>>98488225Race for the galaxy? It’s thinky enough but also chill by many autism standards. I know girls that think it’s great
>>98488426What do you mean, solved? As in, there's nothing new out there?Pretty sure people have been saying that about every medium in existence for decades if not centuries. Plus, usually it takes at least 5 or so years for the diamonds to shine through.
Tried Relic and it isn't as bad as I thought it would be.
>>98488426Every time someone throws up any kind of list (like >>98483733), it tends to be like 5% games I've actually played, 50% I'm passingly aware of, and the rest I don't know anything about.10 years and 100 board games in, pretty much every new game I try is a unique and interesting experience, even if I end up hating it.There is an element of truth in the sense that board games tend to use the same X number of mechanics over and over, but I wouldn't say this means "board games are solved". It means more "we know how to make board games".I do have some semi-related thoughts on this, from my personal experience. If you start with a high level idea of what you want to do with a board game and you keep exploring how to achieve it, a lot of options will fall off and your design will be further and further constrained by the limitations of the medium as you get more concrete.I wrote a couple of years back at this point how I was working on my own idea and I literally just came out with Battlecon. Initially I avoided actually learning Battlecon in order not to influence my design, but it wasn't going anywhere due to work and other shit so I tried it out a couple of weeks ago. It's actually fucking uncanny. Even though my initial game idea was pretty different, I had arrived at pretty much all of the same high-level design concepts independently. Movement on a track, initiative, interrupt, even down to the concept of using two cards in order to create your moves AND the option to use tokens to modify them. All of these were driven by design imperatives and limitations of the medium.
>>98488225Railways of the Lost Atlas, or Shikoku 1889. Both are great at 3~4 players, feature a 2 player mode that's kinda chiller than the main game, can go long but also can go short depending on how the players play. It's basically the next step in complexity from Through the Ages/Terraforming Mars and the like, but only because the simple rules hide how many decisions and choices you''ll be doing per minute of gameplay. Get whichever one is more available to you, the differences in gameplay are largely superficial until you get really deep into 18XX and by then you won't need me to tell you which one of the two is better for you(r friend) and the crew.
>>98485026Gonna have to dive in(ward into yourself or into more games) and see what part appeals to you. MK was probably my second solo and made me think I wanted those big box 'le epic' adventures but in reality it was the economical pressure element I liked and ended up in the Uwe camp (as pure themeless euros was too far on the opposite side of the spectrum)
>>98488414Ordered, I'm blaming you if I wasted my money.I bit and got the deluxe edition with delightful silkscreened wooden pieces.
>>98488414Can 2nd Fromage. (cool though)>Replacing the cheese tasting quadrant with a cheese & wine tasting quadrant>Everything else is almost identical >>98490970The real benefit of the Deluxe is the lazy Susan, cause otherwise it is a tiny bit annoying to rotate the whole-ass board every turn, if it's not on a perfectly-flat surface (my family plays shit at the dinner table which has placemats which mean you gotta pick up the board a bit as you move it)
>>98490970Well that's overdoing it quite a bit anon. Why not try it first on bga
>>98491033Not him, what the fuck I had no idea this was a thing.
>>98491029Yeah Formaggio confused me as well. Almost as much as the fact that french and italian have the "o" and "r" in their words for cheese switched. I kept reading it's an expandalone but I have no clue how it would expand the basegame, for almost all intents and purposes it's the same game to me. I can't imagine it's just a theme switch because how many people are seriously buying a second copy for that, but what do I know. Maybe cashing in on the hype they missed in the first printrun or something
>>98491029>rotate the whole-ass board every turn,Change seats

All these things are still being expanded upon.I playtested a game from a prominent designer and it was like nothing I ever played before. I didn't enjoy it but it's clear that there's more territory to be explored.
how is Star Trek Captains Chair? OK for solo play?
>>98492062Not a solo player at all, but the solo game is very enjoyable. I'd actually say it was designed as a solo game first. Not that 2p isn't great, but damn does it have a lot of downtime

>>98491397This is a good answer to my question because it actually attempts to lists genres that have innovative potential still. But it's like shooter games where there will be like, "shooter, but fast!", or "shooter, but you're in a slowly closing arena!", or "shooter, but there are vehicles!". You don't know how many games that are being released this year that are simply, "build your tableau/engine, but we all share the same market."I know genres exist for reasons of classification, easy explanation, and a preestablished understanding(like you know what kind of experience you're going to get with a comedy movie), but it seems more games, especially this year are more happy to phone it in to an established genre with fancy art.I'm still trying to think of interesting games that came up with something very new this year that is well done. When you think of the medium, there are hardly any limits in the context of space, form, and time that board games exist in.
>>98492393I know, but these sub-genres are still being expanded upon. And they're cross-pollinating with other genres.

>>98492498There is nothing new under the sun. Good observation. Yet people still go to see the latest movies, play the latest video games, read books more recent than the last 100 years, etc. so rarely is anything discernibly groundbreaking. Iteration is still good and produces things that are improvements.Regarding your last point, every form has things that people could choose to do, but they don’t usually, and often that’s because no one wants it. Think of experimental or artsy movies, they can push “limits”, but generally they’re not super popular, they’re interesting on an academic or artistic level, but doesn’t mean it makes for a good movie that people want to see. And once again, if we’re being reductive, then nothing is new anyway, it’s all just recombining existing ideas, but that still has value. I’m thinking about that board game which is designed to be like 500 board games or whatever it was. The rules and components and everything can be combined dynamically to make many different games. That’s an interesting idea, but apparently it wicks and no one wants that from a board game. That’s a “space” that doesn’t get explored very often, but probably for good reason. And arguably it’s not even that novel, there are other games that allow changing the rules, does that mean that game was a waste of time? I say no. I think it’s both overly optimistic and overly pessimistic to expect a new genre-defining anything to come out every year. I am in the same boat of not being interested in anything from the last 12 months, but I don’t think that’s a reason to be negative. If it’s so rare for people to come up with new ideas then it’s because so many good games are already out there.
Tomorrow I'm going to play my first twilight imperium game. What am I in for?
