The Battleforce is basically just a free Demon Prince if you bought everything at a LGS discount, the battleline and NM are always good but I've never seen anyone run a generic demon prince on an EC list, it's always either Fulgrim or Shanxi or whatever her name is.

>>98464004
Yeah, the battleline units are quite boring for a faction that's meant to be flashy, they kinda remind me of the old Plague Marines actually.

Look into TMM so basically start adding volumetric highlights and shadows to imitate how light actually behaves on a metalic surface instead of edge highlighting everything. A good to figure out the placements is putting your basecoated mini under a light source and taking a high contrast picture.

>I've never seen anyone run a generic demon prince on an EC list
Have... Have you ever even looked at EC lists? Triple winged princes were such a staple in 10th that they repeatedly got points increases and still kept getting played. It's only because the defiler is literally their only good shooting platform but costs a fuckton of points so it gets tricky to fit both them and princes that princes have been a little crowded out lately. Winged EC princes are insanely strong.
>>
I'm pretty sure the "tameness" of the EC is mostly just the pastel color palette

Battleforce is a term GW uses to identify big, combined boxes (usually giving some kind of discount as opposed to buying things separately.
Armageddon (in product context) is the new release set for the new edition of 40k, containing a bunch of orks and space marines and the core rules at a fairly hefty discount (compared to buying separately).
11th is the new edition, usually referring to the rules themselves.
>>
>>98463901
Just started playing 10th ed after a while playing 5th. I have Necrons - which detachment to play at 1-2k into Black Templars and Sisters?

I like destroyers and canoptek stuff, so was thinking either Awakened, Canoptek Court or Cursed Legion. I know I don't have any destroyers or much anti tank currently, so my models currently fit best into Awakened but will get some more boxes.

I have:
Overlord, Plasmancer, Technomancer, Chronomancer
20x warriors
5x tesla immortals
3x wraiths
6x scarabs
5x lychguard sword/board
CCB/Annihilation barge

I only play casually so don't want something really complex to play or very rules heavy, but something fun with a bit of tactical depth.

How complex to play are Canoptek Court & Cursed Legion?

Cursed Legion is "Apply Destroyers to enemy face" and Canoptek is "Wraiths are fucking bullshit" so you'll be fine to play either. Awakened is the more generic choice that works with basically everything, but all three have some depth to them.

Hedonites, granted the archers will be really hard to paint but Sigvald, the cavalry, and the painbringers/twinsouls go hard. They also have a good daemons spearhead box to supplement it.

40k has a regular combat patrol for EC anyway, so if you miss out on the battleforce and can't find it anywhere then at the very least you'll have the combat patrol. In AoS they're spearhead was recently changed to all daemons so you'd have to track down the old mortal centric spearhead (which is also awesome)

Is it difficult keeping the power matrix up & holding objectives in no man's land?

Cursed seems to be, pick a target, shoot & bring down to half strength, then pile on rest of units in fight phase
>>
>>98464423
The trick with the power matrix is recognizing that it's always on in your deployment zone, and the only units that actually care about it are heavy-duty shooting units that are usually perfectly fine hanging around on your side of the table. Getting it up in no man's land is a neat bonus but not something you really rely on doing.

Had some discussion in the thread about this last evening, but does anyone at this time have recommendations for "space marine getting stabbed in the back" poses? I'm thinking of either doing it with an assault intercessor or a converted blood claw, though part of the latter is because I already want that box for a possible marines malevolent project. >>
>>98464479
It's good if you like the new vehicles, IIRC you can't buy them separately yet. Based on previous price trends you can expect the individual pieces to total up to $300-350, but you probably already have a billion cadians. If you can get it in the $200-210 range then battleforces are almost always worth it.

>>
>>98464495
sounds cool to me anon, go for it
that said, what occurred to me while I read your concept was that it might be more intriguing if the sacred cannibalism thing were applied to a loyalist chapter instead. One that has a weird subculture focused around the omophagea and perhaps their chaplains or a special rank of officer are served a 'purified' version of the enemy commander's grey matter to consume for useful knowledge. It's practical for winning wars, and an accepted part of Astartes physiology, but it also dances with the edge of corruption, and loyalists having mental wars with the tainted memories of defeated foes sounds pretty badass

IIRC he's one of those 'close enough' Legionaries made from a heroic adult. Some form of the geneseed was implanted in him, but only a partial kind, the rest of the augmentations were done manually through other methods until he was brought up to par with the average Legionary. He's not the only one of this category, during the Great Crusade technology was such that making pseudo-Astartes from adult men was not considered too difficult or cost-prohibitive as long as the mortal in question was actually worthy of the extra effort.

Unironically yes, I named them after Garfield lol. Their lore was that they found an ancient book of pictographs depicting the adventures of a gluttonous cat and it was their leaders inspiration to find this great "lasagna." They'd already been chaos renegades following slaanesh but under this new guidance they began seeking the greatest flavors the galaxy could offer. They use mega pepper spray launchers that shoot capsaicin clouds instead of noise marines.

The Centaur has firing deck 12, it's very funny for an artillery truck (heavy weapons squads count for 2 weapons, so you can fit 6 lascannons into a Centaur and fire them every turn as the Centaur's weapons) and I love it because of this
The Hippogriff is very strong with its ability to move back into cover during your firing phase, and you have 2 of them. You can run that as 1 unit or 2 separate ones.
The Dorn is a great tank (despite lacking a bottom panel), it's a good command vehicle as well if you want to get into tank guard proper.
Line Cadians are always welcome in a guard roster, even just to farm home OBJ points.
If I were starting guard right now that's one of the better purchases you could make. Far better than the current battleforce box IMO (it's full of indirect fire weapons).
>>98464498
You've been able to buy the Centaur and Hippogriff separately for like a month at this point.
If you shop 3rd party vendors (you should) you can get Hippogriffs and Centaurs for $55 each and Dorns for $90 online, or even cheaper in-person.
That box is still cheaper than piecemealing it though.

Have any of you guys who have been to big GTs before know how anal they are about wysiwig? I'm going to NOVA this year and some of my models don't have the wargear I'd like to use. If you keep it easy to understand do the TOs care? Eg: All of this type of unit has plasma

I know it gets confusing if you have non-wysiwig models with mixed gear, but if it's all consistent surely that's ok?

Conventional wisdom is to use meltas because the SoB book lacks anti-tank without them, and has plenty of heavy bolters and similar strength weapons already. It would be a missed opportunity to pass up something the book generally lacks. Especially since the unit has a special rule that applies to monsters/vehicles so you want the monsters/vehicles weapon.

I've actually been testing the bolters lately since you save 30 points though, and it's not bad. 3 shots each means 12 shots, 2+ to hit rerolling means 12 hits, shooting at let's say toughness 12 means wounding on 6+ but they have +1 to wound and reroll wounds which means about 6 wounds, 6 wounds at ap1 means about 2 unsaved wounds against the typical 3+ armor save vehicle/monster, and at damage 2 that translates to a total of 4 unsaved damage every time the bolter paragons shoot at a T12 3+ unit.

Compare that to meltas, which is 6 shots which means 6 hits, s9 wounds t12 on a 5+ but they have +1 to wound and reolling which means about 4 wounds rounded down, ap4 against the same 3+ armor means 4 unsaved wounds, and at damage d6 that will average about 4 rounded up or 3 rounded down. So every time the melta paragons shoot at a t12 3+ monster/vehicle they'll do about 12 damage and sometime you'll get lucky and do around 16 lol.

So the difference is pretty big when they get their ideal target. Damage 4 vs damage 12 per shooting phase is worth the 30 points, generally speaking.

Also note that RAW, verified in the GW app list builder, you don't actually have to take all melta or all bolter, you can mix and match this unit. So if you find yourself with only 20 points left at the end of listbuilding, take 2 meltas and leave the third with a bolter. Nothing wrong with that, since they can split fire.

Multiple levels. What you’re probably doing right now is just slapping down gold paint.
Next level from that is using a recess wash, then edge highlight with silver
After that is something called TMM (True Metallic Metal,) where you use multiple metallic paints with different colored pigments to build up volumetric highlights.
After that is non metallic metal.

I have finished The Wicked and The Warped. Overall pretty good. Lots of comedy but also serious when it needs to be.

>Inquisitor Valeria is basically the third main character just after Trazyn and Orikan. Trazyn wakes her so that they can have a canary in a coalmine for their expedition to a demon world.
>The main antagonist is a Greater Demon of Vashtor that wants to obtain Solemnace. In a discarded timeline he manages to use everything in it to cobble together basically a super Tyranid/Ork biomechanical hybrid and almost destroy the galaxy.
>Meanwhile the whole demon world is basically a project from above mentioned demon in trying to corrupt Necrons. He manages to do it in indirect way. Like Necrons don't fall to Khorne, but put them long enough with blood and slaughter and they mostly degenerate into flayed ones, at which point the difference between them and actual Khorne cultists is sophistry.

Also good news for Ynari fans
Trazyn is confirmed in possession of the last Cronesword. At the end of the book a group of Eldar Corsairs discover it and announce that they plan to steal it
>>

I don't know, the guy that appear doesn't have a coherent design enough to make you think it could be based on a miniature as it's basically a biomechanical shoggoth that changes every scene, and all the minor demons that appear in the book are your usual variety of aligned stuff. He's the only demon of Vashtor that appears.

Are we actually the chuds? I have heard that people who aren't I guess permanently online 4chan freaks like ourselves perceive warhammer(and maybe certain factions) as being "chud coded". But realistically, what the fuck does that even mean. If someone likes Deathguard of Kreig, does that also make them a chud? If someone likes Black Templar, are they also a chud? What even makes a faction "chuddy"? To me, warhammer is just a setting that naturally lends itself to extremes. Most factions are extreme in their own way.

So some argue that like "Well because Black Templars are hyper xenophobic and you like Black templar, that means you are highly xenophobic and racist!!!" or "Because Kriegers wear gas masks, that means you are a nazi!" It seems nuts to me honestly. What do you think? Are we actually the chuds?

It's not just the treads I just think gladiators are a vert poor unit. They are bad as a replacement for predators and as a medium battle tank they are just boring. Sicarans fill the same medium battle tank niche while having their own design identity and shape.

In the words of Brad Poorhammer, a podcaster: "it's not every Black Templar profile picture in our youtube comments, but it's always a Black Templar profile picture in our youtube comments".
If Krieg and BT players want to be treated normally, they could start by being social with others. When someone says "oh yeah I started an Ork army" or posts "my Tzeentch daemons are coming along well" on instagram, the normal response is "wow that's really cool!" or "those look great, I love what you did with the weapon detail". Do that instead of posting "XENOS? HERESY" or "brother get le flamer... le heavy flamer" memes.
Krieg has a similar deal, sort your own shit out and stop hanging out with the "my armband is a fullmetal alchemist reference" guy.

two guys in the middle are supposed to be metamorph hybrids

Wanna get into 40K, but I'm wondering how hard is painting for a complete beginner?
>>
>>98466453
Not very hard these days, so much info on what to learn before starting compared to 25 years ago
Just look up some Duncan rhodes beginner videos and buy a box of infantry for the army you like and some paints and brushes, nippers, primer, exacto knife, and try your hand at it
>>
>>98466453
It's honestly easy. It's not like you have to paint to a certain standard or else you get disqualified and access to instructions and tutorials is easier than its ever been. The only hard thing is that it's a skill like any other and it takes practice and effort to get better. As far as tools go don't overthink it, just get a starter set of paints, primer and a brush from either GW or any of the other mini-paint companies like Vallejo, Ak, Army Painter, etc and go from there.
>>
>>98466453
It's a skill that develops over time, like anything that involves knowledge or technique. Watch some painting guides on youtube and just do lots of repetitions. Steadily improving over time is the trick, don't expect things quickly. Have patience with yourself and just enjoy it. Painting is part of the fun of the hobby. Many stores have areas where people can paint together and that's a great way to pick up tips too.

Just painting at all already puts you farther than most players, and then over time you actually start making things that look good. It's a nice feeling.
>>
>>98466453
As hard as you want to make it.
Depending on which faction to get, some are easy, some are hard.
Tyranids? Slather on some Contrast paints.
Chaos Marines? Hope you like painting trim, faggot.
Just get a decent set of brushes, NO synthetics, NO Army Painter. You can get a set super cheap at most hobby stores. They won't last long, but if you only paid like 4 bucks for them, it'll be enough to get you started.
>>
>>98466453
slapchop/contrasts/speedpaints
ignore tha haters, as an entryway to learning to hold a brush at all it's an ok entryway, and when you move on from primarily using contrasts they still have their use when dilluted as washes/glazes

>>98466496

>>
>>98466453
It's harder to get over the mental hurdle that you'll mess up than it is to actually put paint on the models.
Get some models that you like the look of and don't look too difficult to paint (larger, less fiddly details, stuff like that), and start there. It's genuinely harder to trim all the sprue remnants and mould lines off of models (at least on your fingers) than it is to paint.
I started painting with the cheapest brush set I found at my nearest hobby store (which was a Hobby Lobby) and a $50 army painter starter set of paints on a Leman Russ. I learned a lot and got better by trying again and again.
If it helps to watch someone else do it to build up courage, watch a few yt videos of other people painting models. Duncan Rhodes has a few good "beginner" videos, he's very palatable to a newcomer IMO.

File: technomancer_necron.jpg (59 KB, 649x670)

How often are models actually designed size wise for balance reasons? For example, some units are on 32mm bases and others are on 40mm. I play kill team and I even have a model that is on a 50mm base I think. The Necron Technomancer. Like is there a balance reason this guy is on such a large base and sits higher than other models etc?
>>
>>98467003
I think the modelling team barely considers rules or playability of size at all and just makes what they want and leaves the rules team to figure out how to stat whatever they toss their way.
>>
>>98464547
Tson apothecaries were probably killed trying to prevent Ahriman from casting the rubric. They would have spent their lives fighting the change and never would have just went along with his crazy plan. Also they're kinda useless in a legion of biomancers, more so after the rubric. You might have one or a small 'coven' of apothecaries who were powerful enough to survive the rubric.
>>
>>98467014
The only reason why I thought balance stuff came into play is because there are models like this. Why would this model be so high up? My guess at first was because it has an ability that requires it see a friendly unit. Otherwise it would be tiny behind walls and hardly get to see friendly units. Reason I was even thinking about this is because I like doing conversions but I don't want to wreck balancing when it comes to sizes etc. A good rule of thumb I read is to always use the same base size that the unit normally comes with. No matter what converting you do.

No they don't. I have seen them say water down nuln oil. And obviously if you are chasing painting competition wins, then shortcuts like GW washes aren't going to do it.
But ya I watch painting channels to learn how to properly dry brush and use washes lol.
>>
>>98467003
Base size matters for getting around terrain, but it matters more for things with big bases like bikes and some vehicles. Like it's intentionally a nightmare to put fat space marine bikes inside ruins because their oval bases are annoying.
Height matters for line of sight, mostly for when your model is being shot at. It's a dick move to pose your snipers shooting from prone, for example, because then you could easily hide them behind low ruins walls.
>>
>>98464784
It needs to be obvious to your opponent. Or completely opaque. Like let's say I have 3 units of Scourges. Nobody outside the Dark Kim themselves have any idea what a dark lance or haywire launcher look like. So I say I have 3 units of Scourges all with dark lances. Zero issue for you. Now let's say I hVe 2 with dark lances range 36inc. And 1 with heat lances range 18 melta 4. Now there is an issue. How a DE player fixes this put like orange highlights on the Heat Lance guys. So they look immediately different.
But if you have 3 identical units visually, but say 1 is actually different and aren't using GW wysiwyg then it's an issue.
Another example could be I have two repex 1 modeled with plasma, 1 with laser, I say at the beginning of the game hey both are laser. Thats going to be fine, you don't need to remember which is which both as both are the same thing.
Basically your opponents need to be able to make decisions without having to ask you every 30 what your army actually is.

New player here trying to understand how hazard rolls work (building up a Dread Mob army).

If I take a Deff Dread and give it 4 Kustom mega-blastas then I need to roll 4 hazard dice and rolling 1-2 on any of them results in 3 wounds lost with no save?

That's straight up suicidal right?

I was planning to convert them to be more like space marine dreads with a big gun representing 3x of the same weapon and a single claw

Kind of want to have the option to join tournaments if the game is fun though and not sure if that would fly there.

Was also planning to do something like this for Dakka Rigs - will people see it as confusing if they look similar to Deff Dreads (but still have the correct size legs and base)

It depends somewhat on exactly which faction you're running (EC winged princes are insanely much better than their foot princes, for example) but foot princes are perfectly viable in most situations, and often the T9->T10 difference is highly meaningful, S5, 9 and 10 are very common. I've been running a foot prince in my Iron Warriors list (Fellhammer/Cabal) and he's been doing work, he's very often the first onto the middle objective where he can sit and be a tough bastard.

Started collecting orks recently because I like the models but not gonna lie their lore is a bit retarded

Being bio engineered weapons & literal mushrooms is fine, ok, whacky origin.

Are they any ork characters who are a bit more interesting and 3 dimensional.

>>98468278
>0 plot motivations
Define plot, because plenty of orks have motivations or unique goals to their fighting. It's still all about fighting (and that's based), but there's something they want to get out of the fighting
>Ghazzy is trying to unite all orks into a megaWAAAAGH since he sees himself as a prophet of both Gork and Mork
>Wazdakka is trying to pave a section of the galaxy into the biggest, deadliest race track ever
>Badrukk wants more money and more problems
>Mozrag wants to hunt the biggest, deadliest monsters in existence
>Snikrot is out to prove orks can be sneakier and scarier than humans
>Tuska sailed into the eye of terror to find the best fight he could
>Gorgutz wants the finest heads he can find to put on his pointy stick
>Kaptin Bludflagg faced a daemon prince in order to earn himself a new hat
Their motivations are simple, but that's their charm. There is a purity in the orks' crudeness that is core to the faction's identity

>How do you have the energy to keep up with all these niche micro-"celebrities" you hate?
I don't I just remember when femstodes came out he made a big stink about leaving 40k forever and GW had lost a loyal customer and ruined their ip etc etc. He left for more welcoming fandoms like trench crusade, then he got kicked from that and then went back on his word to being a 40k grfiter type. I have no idea what he's done/doing after that, but hes a retard he said hes leave 40k forever then came back like nothing happended so its hard to forget that
>>
>>98468278
Do you really need more motivation? Is the pursuit of conflict not good enough on it's own? You clearly see worth in it because you've taken up the wargaming hobby, yet the Orks are somehow lame for having the same motives?
>>
>>98468371
its interesting the phenomenon within this fandom of people who don't play an army but insist on certain units which are not popular with the actual army fans
TS players hate them but tzaangors are the bee's knees for people who don't play them
same with CSM and cultists. people who don't play think human cultists should be the focus in CSM armies with only a handful of actual chaos marines leading them
Its not even a chaos thing, you have the same thing with Tau where the outsiders love the kroot/aux aliens while tau fans just want more battle suits.

>>

Presumably he means some stuff from the Lion book written by Mike Brooks got changed in the Dark Angels codex that came out a year later. No idea what specifics he is referring to. That could just as easily have been two things being written at the same time not matching up though.

One could argue the reason they don't play that army is BECAUSE said thing isn't the focus, eg
>I like birdniggas but fuck playing dusty marines
>I like chaos mortals but fuck spiky marines
>I like the idea of an alien confederation but fuck monotau/monokroot
Also you have to account for some pf it being the opposite of concern trolling, aka unconcerned trolling. By taking what is an obvious sore spot for fans of a certain faction and downplaying or disagreeing with their criticisms, you can get them even more riled up. Such as
>I don't see the issue with primaris, they're practically identical to old marines except better scaled.

>His head is the Tzeentch head

>>
>>98468268
>Primarchs are capeshit.
Hardly. Even in HH it doesn't show them off that much honestly.
40k stories does it even less, like even Guilliman coming back. The entire narrative has centered on him or had him as a character like 2 times. 1st was Gathering Storm, makes sense since it's where he was resurrected, 2nd was in Godblight which entire point was Morty trying to kill Guilliman to gain Nurgle's favor.
Beyond that Guilliman basically never shows up.
And as for Lion, he has done even fucking less than Guilliman in the over all narrative since 2017. Which is impressive.

People only think it's capeshit because they are prominent characters that the fanbase talks about them a lot, but that doesn't make it capeshit. It just means people like those characters a lot.
Talking about a character a lot doesn't turn it magically into capeshit, what actual capeshit is fucking marvel movies. Stop mis-using terms because you're an idiot.
>>
>>98468348

If your house has AC and you have it running in a room bigger than 8'x8', you have nothing to worry about with plastic cement or acrylic paint fumes. If you're really worried or don't have AC, turn on a fan to create a vacuum (point it out the door so it creates a low pressure area in the room, thus creating a vacuum that draws new clean air into the room) to pull the fumes out of the room so they can dissipate. It's harmless when at low enough concentration.
If you're airbrushing I'd get the concern on paint particles, but if you aren't airbrushing you have nothing to worry about in terms of paint. A 3M painter's mask isn't exactly expensive either if you're REALLY worried about inhaling paint particles.

Unless you're intentionally hotboxing the fumes in a poorly ventilated room, you have nothing to worry about for you, nor your cats. Keep the cats out of and away from the containers when they're open, like you should be doing anyway.
