>What is Lancer?
Lancer is a TTRPG about narratives, customizable mechs, and the pilots who crew them.

Set thousands of years in the future, Lancer imagines a future where humanity has spread to the stars after weathering terrible ecological collapse on Earth.

Players of Lancer adopt the roles of mech pilots. Some groups will fight for Union, working to rectify the crimes of previous administrations. Others, for a corpro-state, working to advance private interests while lining their pockets.

Lancer offers deep mech customization, a wide range of player backgrounds, and a system and setting with room for any story you and your group want to tell.

You really overestimate how much this guy matters to the game.
It may be that it was his name that initially put Lancer in the spotlight, but he hasn't been relevant in a long time.
Just about everyone except for most diehard discord trannies just ignore whatever parts of the lore don't suit them and just plays the game.

Why do Tech builds feel so shit in this game? When enemies do Tech to you, you take like 8 heat in a turn and kill yourself.

When you do Tech attacks to enemies they take 2 heat and you MAYBE get to make their turn slightly more annoying if they want to avoid taking more heat... which of the time they don't because enemies have huge heat caps compared to players.

Like, am I just retarded, or is Tech just not meant to be used by players? There is no situation in which I would ever choose to spend an action on a Tech attack over a weapon attack.
>>
>>98468602
It's not you, most tech sucks because of a basic design principle. The main goal of tech is to disrupt a target's turn Because enemies constantly outnumber players, a player spending a turn to disrupt an enemy turn us a net loss for the players, as their turns are more limited and inherently worth more. This is why games like D&D usually have the high level control magic hit multiple targets. Tech attacks do not.

Add to this the fact that Tech's main way of discouraging certain enemy actions is Heat, which most enemies don't care about... yeah.

Add to THAT the fact that there are tons of mods, core bonuses, talents, etc to improve weapon combat and none of that for Tech builds and it becomes pretty obvious that Tech was added to the game purely as a way for NPCs to deal with high-evasion or high-armor PCs. All the Tech content that made its way to the players is nerfed and neutered by comparison.
>>
>>98468602
sounds like you're trying to do the wrong thing with them. tech isnt nukes. its control. its meant to lock enemies down or set them up for your teammates, as well as provide some defensive bonuses and deterrents

>>98468670
a lot of this is just straight up untrue or highly exaggerated
>>
>>98468709
Alot of it is OBJECTIVELY true.
>>
>>98468714
okay lets start with your "tech only effects one target at a time" vs dnds spells. while this is """technically""" true, it leaves out the fact that wizards in dnd can only cast one spell a turn, while hackers in lancer can hit with 2 or 3 techs a turn, more if there's a case of something like goblin getting a counter tech

next, you say enemies dont care about heat. but if you hit with something like shrike code, banish, or chains of prometheus you can instantly blow a mech into their heatcap or effectively shut them down under threat of stress. only a handful of enemies have a heatcap high enough to not instantly get fried on those types of invades, and you can do that to multiple enemies a turn.

while weapons do have a lot of mods, they all do pretty much the same thing. more damage, or ignoring a defense for more damage, usually to one guy at a time unless you have a flame thrower or a launcher or something which have their own limitations and if they dont kill their target they do nothing to stop the enemy from retaliating most of the time unlike a tech which shuts enemies down and acts as a defensive tool for your team.

lastly, you are really underselling techs strongest role, which is to help set up the field for your allies. you act as a force multiplier. if your striker is out of range but you can dance an enemy into their range, thats fewer actions the striker has to spend on moving and more they can spend on damage. or you could pin a slippery enemy in place to prevent them from getting away from one of your strikers. you can use forced movement to cluster enemies up so your big aoe damage dealer with the plasma thrower can catch them all in a line. tech is incredibly flexible in what it can do and how it can enable the rest of your team to do more damage, stick to targets better and not get pinned by enemies in return.

tech has a wealth of uses, but because you dont see big number big dam you've discounted it entirely
>>
>>98468670
I blame more of the design of a lot of NPC templates in not being vulnerable enough to tech comparatively to straight damage, or some NPCs that are vulnerable to tech have optional systems that just remove the vulnerability (Ace).
>>
>>98468670
I mean, tech isn't just an all in, it's perfectly fine to build a mech around using one quick a turn on a tech action and one quick to fire a weapon and use the one to set up the other

the most blindingly obvious hybrid course being Vanguard CQB + puppet systems, which is something just about any mech with decent sensor range can pull off

Do you call every game with tactical combat on a grid a 4e dnd clone? Not that it's even incorrect, Lancer has a lot of that DNA and I don't think it's particularly shy about it but I'm curious why you treat it like an insult.
>>
>>98475855
nta but 4e had a super mixed reception that still lingers to this day for being decent at combat and little else
>>
>>98474238
nta, but I have experience with Blood Money. I really enjoyed running it because it gave my players a tangible motivation to crank up the difficulty of the game for a paycheck, and the kind of stuff you can buy with manna can get really strong and offer up a lot of neat tricks.
For having the players pick which mission they want to do, make sure to offer that choice at the end of a session so you can plan for the next with the knowledge on knowing what kind of thrashing the PCs selected. Also, the mission structure really does a good job in solving the complaints a lot of Lancer modules have, and that’s railroading. Blood Money emphasizes gaining loyalty and potentially changing story beats depending on if the players become loyalists to a certain faction, or fencesit for self interest.
You also by default aren’t playing goodie-two shoes from Union, you’re playing as mercenaries.

Hi /lg/! My friend and I just playtested my homebrew expansion of LANCER, ONE YEAR WAR, set in Gundam's Universal Century timeline during the One Year War. Stats are based on their portrayal in media and sometimes Gihren's Greed: Menace of Axis V.

I'd appreciate it if some of you guys could spare the time to watch this vid and give me some pointers, while he's a tabletop enthusiast my experience is literally one LANCER session that did not make it past 3 rounds.

Notes:
>The expansion (is that the right term?) can be played both as a wargame with multiple units or a traditional RPG game, but the character (Ace) creation system has not been drafted yet.
>Gutted TECH system because muh Minovsky Particles
>Zaku II stats are mostly based on the Everest
>Most weapons are reskins of GMS weapons with slight stat changes
>I intentionally made ships and planes shit because that's how it is

damn, this is high effort anon. very cool.
You did a good job on the editing, managed to keep it engaging.
The images you used for the individual units look really good.
I did throw it on 1.5 times speed to get through some of the rules deliberations
>gutted tech
tech is a big part of the game, I would have maybe just reduced the range at which it can be used. (a distance close enough that your eWarfare attack signals are strong enough to overcome the minovsky particles)
>pvp vs pve army game
I really wouldn't make this a pvp game. keeping track of a million structures/effects of each unit for each player will be a pain in the ass and slow the game down a lot I promise you. You really should be reskinning the NPCs and not using player mechs for the GM's units.
If you really want to make this a pvp wargame I would limit the amount of structures each unit can have.
>map size
I agree the map size you're using is good.
>unit sizes
all your capital ships should be size 3 minimum. it doesnt really make sense when the carriers are barely bigger than then mechs. The toriares are a good size.
>intentionally made the ships bad because thats how it is
we see the broadside salvos of the ships do a lot of damage in the show, you don't have to make them shitty, just make them slow.

overall a really cool idea and a decent execution. With some tweaks this could be really good. Nice job anon.
>>
>>98483783
Post pdf if you want proper feedback next time, good anon
>>
>>98483870
If that’s how you want to see it, sure. Though it’s also not the best at mech customization nor does it have any crunch for the pilots operating outside of the mech. Which aren’t theater kid problems.
>>
>>98485573
>>98483783
you could even use the titanic mech/creature rules from enhanced combat for the ships

Need bit of GM advise, I was considering giving a player a Displacer as a mission reward in lieu of typical exotic gear
They're already doing high heat stuff, mostly with some flavor of Sherman or Tokugawa
I was wondering, is this too much as a reward or not?
>>
>>98485735
depends. what LL is the party at and do the other players have exotic gear also or is this guy special?
>>
>>98482200
i just want to figure out how to adjust weapon types in comp con before i start exploring more superheavy options, but you did get my number being a basic bitch there. can you tell me how to set the tachyon or any other weapon as a rifle per tagete's shenanigans
>>
>>98486029
unfortunately there's no way to do it in comp con, you can do it once you upload it into Foundry by manually editing the sheet adding in overkill and rifle to the weapon type but in comp-con unfortunately it does kinda neglect the Tagates
>>
>>98485943
everyone gets an exotic piece that's relevant to their mech, LL is 5, going on 6, I just know he's been agonizing over getting the displacer but doesn't quite want to invest 3 LL's into napoleon just to use a displacer
>>
>>98486029
>>98486075
Maybe you can make a custom .lcp that has a rifle version of the weapon. Idk if that will transfer over to foundry or not, I've never tried.
>>
>>98486087
Eh i'd say its fine. LL6 is when most builds come into their own, i dont think an "exotic" displacer is gonna throw off the balance.
>>
>>98486113
yeh I wasn't gonna give a displacer, as funny as it would be, at LL1
exotics I'm handing out are mostly the exotics in comp-con but with the numbers filed off to make them work in the custom campaign
the exotics are a reward for during the last mission them completing a side objective to bail out a weapons dealer
>>
>>98486075
i see. thanks. wanted to make sure i wasnt neglecting a function in comp con while messing around with things. so until my gm or another source of authority corrects me, im gonna put stabilizer mods on the gun then count it as a rifle

Thank you all for the feedback, I didn’t actually expect anyone to respond!

>>98485573
>I did throw it on 1.5 times speed to get through some of the rules deliberations
Do go back and watch it fully if you can, I throw on some graphics for unit and weapon stats here and there!
>tech is a big part of the game, I would have maybe just reduced the range at which it can be used.
Could you give me some examples of why tech is important? I couldn’t really gleam much information and a feel of it from the corebook.
>You really should be reskinning the NPCs and not using player mechs for the GM's units.
Well I only used the Everest as a basis, in truth the Zaku II is a slightly weaker Assault NPC. I’d love to hear any recommendations on which specific NPCs I should use as a basis for units, though.
>If you really want to make this a pvp wargame I would limit the amount of structures each unit can have.
Currently, most if not all units have 2 structure and 2 stress. I wanted them to have a chance to repair themselves, as seen in certain Gundam media, yet still have the chance of instantly blowing up.
>all your capital ships should be size 3 minimum
During testing I tried it out, but that made the map feel too small.
>we see the broadside salvos of the ships do a lot of damage in the show, you don't have to make them shitty, just make them slow
They do 1d20 damage! The Mega Particle Cannons have INACCURATE, I just rolled three fucking zeroes and bad damage this game, so they couldn’t do much.
>>98485598
Still WIP sadly. I literally only have stats for the units seen in the video, and then some.
>>98485667
I think I have that somewhere, but just in case, where can one acquire a copy?

Thank you all again for watching and giving feedback! I already have made several balance changes to the game, including a new system that will make certain weapons more interesting… stay tuned!
>>
>>98487547
nta but hackinig is a large part of the game because its very integrated with the heat system and debuffs/buffs, the tl:dr is that a lot of systems interact with it and the game without hacking would be very smoothbrained in terms of heat management and combat

in what way did you think this thing is bad anon?
>>
>>98485573

I think it fine to keep it player mech vs player mech. For the most part, battles in gundam consists of small skirmishes between a relatively even number of combatants on both sides, so it makes sense to use fully statted enemies since they won't outnumber the pc:s and it is a relatively even fight.
>>
>>98488292
How would gas or poison affect a hermetically sealed mech cockpit? They're made to drop in hostile planets, mustard gas wouldn't do shit.
>>
>>98488938
depending on type, gas can be a airborne acid sort of rather than dealing damage on inhalation, an airborne acid would probably ruin most mech's insulation and technical components rather immediately not to mention the LOS fuckery you can do with it

this is all just an excuse to play a area denial playstyle, i think it would be fun to have some features like that with some of the gear from lich Licence or minotaur
>>
>>98488970
bruh this is literally the Balor license but instead of having it be gas it's nanites, which is given the context of the setting, drastically more reasonable
>>
>>98488589

Probably the worst striker set up you could find on a mech that capable of absolutely fucking nothing else.
>memevasion is this trash frames best stat
Worthless. It’s actual best stat is its 15 sensor so you can sit back and do nothing but lock on and *checks notes* bolster all game until you get a license that’s actually useful. Which reminds me-
>>98489218
the Minotaur has an actual valuable license that other mechs want. The mc is garbage that’s worse than LL0 options at every turn. Not to mention the kinotaur itself can hardfuck anything for one turn no questions asked, which is better than the absolutely fucking nothing the mourning cloak is capable of accomplishing ever.
>>
>>98491001
you were saying worst mech not worst license everyone knows minotaur license is good
but minotaur itself is beyond garbage
8 sensor range flat out doesn't let you do anything useful, fucking mourning cloak is better at using minotaur licenses than the god damn minotaur
>>
>>98491117
You brought up license, it’s still by far the worst mech, and license, since you mentioned it. It wishes it could do something ever, let alone nuke anything no questions asked as a core power like the Minotaur can. You actually proved my point with the Minotaur as an example, since the shit cloak reads like it’s actually interesting worthwhile Minotaur tier ability was removed at some point and what you are left with is that pile of shit mech and pile of shit license
>minotaur who has a better tech stat, and can actually key off its systems with its core traits is worse with them than the most useless joke mech in the game
Crazy how you’re just the opposite of correct time after time
>>
>>98491164
>let alone nuke anything no questions asked as a core power like the Minotaur can
Stunning once per repair as a FULL TECH is garbage, absolute and utter complete garbage

every single enemy worth using this core power on is going to be an elite with a "at the start of your turn clear a condition" trait, literally every single one meaning you just spent a full round doing literally nothing

and if you're stunning a regular mech? you spent your entire turn taking away their turn which congrats, still not fucking worth it

Mourning Cloak's core power is better than the Minotaur in any realistic scenario
>>
>>98491214

>game is only specific fuck you ultras and grunts

Or clinically retarded.
Yeah, the selfish anemic core power that only benefits the do nothing stealth cuck mech to be even less present and useful (lol) is worse than the literal bull core power that benefits the entire team. Unreal takes after another. Next you’ll bring up the license cost again lol
>>
>>98491323
I'm sorry but are you literally so stupid you don't understand how useful being able to teleport as your move and boost is?
like genuine, are you clinically retarded?

the minotaur's core power is basically shitty one time use version of Orator III, ANY mech can do what it does by just taking orator III and can do it multiple times

trading your turn for an enemy turn is generally speaking a bad fucking trade, not to mention you gotta be within sensor range

I like it as a dedicated melee mech, good enough speed with it's core passive, pretty dang durable with 10 health / 2 armor and 9 evasion isn't irrelevant since you can end every turn behind hard cover if you really want and going full HULK SMASH mode with it's core up gets absolutely hilarious

That said I still wonder exactly why they gave it 2 dedicated grappler systems when it's pretty bad at grappling, you functionally need SMN to make use of it

I just ignore the grappling aspects of it and enjoy my D/D 288 memes and the fact I can enable creative mode on the terrain when I want
my honest to god only regret with the Zheng is that it has main instead of flex slots so I could put 2 plasma torches in it for even more terrain destruction goodness
>>
>>98494071
I do want to punch a motherfucker into next week it just feels too all-in even compared to something like Blackbeard
>>
>>98494340
you don't "have" to use the D/D, like you can simply skip the LL3 in favor of something else, it's got plenty of good mounts
it's mildly ironic that despite 2 sort of wasted systems on grappling, the Zheng is the better striker frame of it and the Blackbeard in a vacuum if you're not trying to grapple

It just kinda suffers from a very "meh" license overall compounded by IPS-N already having plenty of good strikers, and being a bit unfocused (Total Strength Suite II and III absolutely should have been about things other than grappling, and instead gone with the environmental damage and AoE chip damage thing the license has going for it)

Zheng does shine if your GM loves to chuck grunts at you or invisible/high evasion enemies (the D/D doesn't discharge until it hits something after all, and against your typical low health/high evasion enemy Reliable:8 is devastating) but yeh it can feel hard to justify using over other options at times

still not a bad frame, I'd rate it as the second most durable IPS-N frame as well, only the Drake being tougher in a vacuum, Tortuga needs to have hyperdense up, so pretty good if you're worried about incoming damage

The Caliban really only has one playstyle and that's to be a screaming retard that just runs into people
>>
>>98498117
to be fair, it's very good at being a screaming retard
it also used to have a niche of being a 1/2 that could mount superheavies but dustgrave came along and let us put a D/D 288 on a dusk wing if we so desire

Hunter Logic's invades are pretty good. And if you do mix it with systems from another license, namely anything from Horus, it becomes a great vessel for the Thinking Tomorrow's Thought core bonus.

what other LL's should i grab than this little shit? i want to make a tech build
>>
>>98500421
depends on what you're looking for from those other LL's
if you're looking for other mechs that don't die to a wet fart while still being good hackers there's always a tortuga, lich or sunzi, balor maybe if you're going for tech attacks without saves, then again, can always just go with a chomolungma if you're worried about getting structured and that one doesn't require any "wasted" license points

for extra tech dickery, minotaur, manticore and lich have some great options, sunzi as well though outside of puppet systems it's more of the support type
if invisible enemies are starting to piss you off (and they will if your GM loves them) getting a lotus projector or if need be eye of horus can help, that or getting into a taraxacum (which is not a bad hacker either)

some way of becoming invisible is also not a bad choice either, or maybe looking for a weapon you like when tech isn't the solution and violence is needed
>>

thanks for the suggestions, if you know about any fun combo's to do with different hacks that would be nice too, like puppet systems into the heat images created by dimensional emblems, i really want to make overheating the opponent a reality

heat bomb is fairly hard to do but it can work out
you can also do silly things with excommunicate and then just forcing them next to their allies

quick question but what's heavy gunner doing for you here?
it doesn't work with a CPR, nor does it work with loading weapons
ASURA doesn't quite work with a CPR either since you can't use it for duplicate actions and since firing the CPR is always a barrage (due to superheavy) you immediately run into that issue, and using ASURA just to stabilize feels somehow really bad

Might as well go with an Andromeda or LBR (since you have a lot of limited systems) or Gandiva missiles
>>

okay am dum, scratch the LBR since you need 3x SSC license for All-Theater
>>
>>98506027
You're right the only other talents I can think are either Brutal or Tactician
>>
>>98506798
since you're going with flying, tactician 2 isn't a bad choice
tactician 3 is however again wasted because you're using a superheavy and it can't be used for that
if you were overcharging more, nuclear cavalier wouldn't have been the worst either, everyone loves an extra d6, but overcharging a lot on an 8 heat cap mech without heatfall is ambitious to say the least, if you went up to 10 heat cap you could be the madman who rawdogs 1D6+4 to then quick stabilize it away with redundant systems later but still benefiting from nuclear cavalier

prospector 3 is also funny but less so if you're flying

but yeh brutal could definitely work since you're using an accurate weapon,

The game allows you to be a priest background so jokes on the authors. I'm sure the Catholic Church exists in Lancer. The hates of hell will not prevail afterall.

Catholic Kingdoms who reject Union propaganda.
>>
>>98514465
Tonks x Genghis works even better
>>
>>98514646
They couldn't technically be Catholic, could they? At least, not multiple kingdoms. Either the Church didn't survive the Fall and died on Earth; or they survived as one of the many isolated societies that re-emerged and eventually founded Union; or the Pope got on an all-Catholic colony ship before the Fall, in which case they probably end up either like the Karrakins where they get bullied into compliance by the tech difference, or like the Aunics where they get their own MONIST-class sugar daddy to keep them competitive.

Of course there's always the option that there were colonies who declared their own popes after receiving word that civilization collapsed back on Earth, but then they aren't really Catholic anymore, are they? There's no longer the central authority that defines Catholicism.

heatgunning requires a lot of effort
for single stress enemies, it only permanently exposes them. For enemies with more than one stress, it's a chance of exposure, or impaired, and at 0 stress it's explosion, and optimally the DM would then run the mech into your team

>>98472851
>rebake
Rebake sucks
bespoke grunts are novel, yes, but everything else entirely misses the mark
it fixes some of the NPC problems that everyone already knows about and most people fix anyway ie enemies with multiple attacks at higher tiers
kai tave is a retard who doesn't play lancer though, he entirely misses the mark on NPCs, most NPCs are actually much stronger, and he's a shortsighted retard
Kai Tave is also responsible for some of the most disgustingly unbalanced official content, and Suldan is full of unbalanced garbage because once again, he doesn't play lancer
He's an unprofessional dickhead who lords his power over people. Starts arguments in pilotnet to get people banned, has used the official massif twitter to told a third party content creator to kill themselves, etc.
I will NEVER use kai tave slop in my games. The official content he is responsible for is adjusted appropriately
>>
>>98488292
biological tag enemies are uncommon
to make it work, you'd have to do one of two things:
>just make the damage burn
this is just kinda boring, and it becomes competitive with every other option of inflicting burn
>allow it to damage pilots
not great, because the game is not balanced with pilots in mind, which is why the pirate template is super fucking cringe and evil
>>
>>98515064
i was thinking more of a third damage type rather than just replacing burn, perhaps make it interact with armour somehow?
>>
>>98515087
burn already bypasses armor
adding a new damage type just further complicates things
it could just be "burn weapons that does more damage/does something extra to biological targets and leaves clouds that give soft cover"
you could also add that it disorients if inhaled by pilots, causing them to be impaired/only have LoS to adjacent spaces
>>
>>98515093
it could be cool to have more of a aoe cloud that eats away at HP and reduces the armour of those within, if i were to design such a mech a lot of it would be aimed at area denial and heavily punishing those who would try to fight toe-to-toe with you in the cloud with perhaps some high dmg short range weapon, couple it with a unique ability of the frame to see through and be unaffected by smoke with some mines/grenades that do similar effects. would for sure have to make some things to prevent you from sitting in a fart cloud all day with a sniper though...
idk, i havent really given the concept a lot of thought so far but im sure it could be cool

Funny cause in my game christianity (at least in the area where the party is playing) is mostly in the same level of old norse religions: A cool old religion, but most people who say they believe in it are redditor larpers.
One of the npc's working with the party is a priest missionary of some weird mixture of valdesian and orthodox future christianity, poor dude is trying is best to turn the larpers into actual believers and is more stimulants and stress in the vague shape of a human at this point

I've only played low level Lancer sofar, so I'm wondering what exactly are the problems with high level NPC's?
Are they too strong or too weak, and what solutions does everyone have for them?
>>
>>98515811
Some NPCs gain a lot more power than others when they get bumped a tier, namely the Operator and the Spectre from gaining multiple attacks rather than scaling damage. If you just don’t spam those, then you’re fine.

This is now a Kai Tave hate thread.
>The only massif press author to have his official content widely accepted as shit by the greater lancer community
>everyone who has ever run Operation Solstice Rain has changed/improved it in some way in order to make it fun.
>made lancer battlegroup, got mad when people didn't want to play it.
>created the single worst piece of official content that massif press ever published, field guide to Suldan
>was part of the angry mob that resulted in Ziegler losing his massif press contracts because he had the audacity to run his own lancer server that had less draconian moderation.
>will spend every moment talking about lancer and never playing it.
Now I'm not saying he's an inherently evil or bad guy, but he's the epitome of mediocre, with splashes of retardation thrown in. The real tragedy is that Massif Press still keep him around, I have no idea why, his work sucks.
>>
>>98517679
Interesting.
What’s there to point out with certain rebaked NPCs that make them worse than the originals? I found his line of thinking was reasonable, and I’ve run the rebaked versions too.
Well, mainly the grunts. I always had an issue with how grunts were handled in the core rules originally.
>>
>>98517679
>lancer battlegroup
ah shit, is it bad? I was sort of thinking of integrating it into my campaign once the party got to buy/commandeer enough ships, what are the main problems? Perhaps i can salvage it for my game
>>
>>98517679
>field guide to Suldan
what is so horrid about it?
>>
>>98518030
Its actually not that bad of a game, he was just expecting it to get a lot more engagement than it did from the lancer community.
Getting used to the Gyre (the main mechanic of the game) takes a minute, but the ships are cool
>>
>>98515733
The Catholic Church has already lived through multiple empires ending. They will still exist and monks will be the ones preserving knowledge. Read Canticle of Leibowitz, a Apocalypse won't stop the Church from preserving knowledge. They are probably missionary ships in Lancer. Bringing back humanity to the light if Christ no matter how far.
>>
>>98517827
the problem is the good parts of rebake are things the community already knew of and most seasoned GMs already tweak
>bespoke grunts
decent, but most people use legionaires from enhanced combat for this anyway
>removing T2/3 multiple attacks
everyone already knows this and either tweaks these or only runs one unit of any of these NPCs at a higher level
in the rebake, he has several blurbs about each NPC that talk about his "design philosophy" which includes such gems like saying Ronin and Assault have 0 identity outside of being "sword guy" and "soldier guy" when those are both identities that should exist in the TTRPG in some form.
His changes overall actually make NPCs in general much stronger, at the cost of no longer having them horrifically outscale pilots, which doesn't really matter because players still feel very weak against these rebake NPCs. Which the problem already was players feeling too weak especially in frames like mourning cloak or atlas. This makes it so you have to basically use any Kai Tave designed frame (Lycan, Chomo) or you get fucked.
>>98518193
Suldan is horrifically unbalanced to an absurd degree. It is filled with tons of frames and mechs that are so ludicrously far above the mark that it makes most official lancer content mechs useless in comparison. This goes for a lot of the talents in the book as well.
this post is getting too long so I'm going to split it into a second one
>>
>>98519845
Kai Tave's design philosophy is
>identify a problem with the system
>"fix" it by designing something horrifically broken
two examples in his OFFICIAL content
>chomolungma
completely and utterly outclasses every other hack-based frame and arguably most support frames in general. It gets free invade options (which should have instead been a GMS system anyone can take) that are VERY good, it has baseline stats that are incredibly solid. It has an EXTREMELY powerful core power. There is no reason to run goblin over chomolungma, period. It's not an everest case where everest is a baseline jack of all trades but other frames fill specific niches and playstyles, no, the chomo is just the best at hacking, period
>Lycan
Before anyone says anything, the same issues with Lycan can also apply to Empakaai, which is another can of worms and not related to Kai, but this post is about Kai right now.
The Lycan "fixes" melee
It is no small statement to say melee in Lancer is generally underpowered compared to ranged. Melee requires much more talent and HASE investment for equivalent or competitive gains to an artillery build. Kai's solution? Here is a frame with a free integrated superheavy weapon that is insanely powerful with no downside. Also it has a heavy mount still so you can mount ANOTHER heavy+ weapon, which can be a ranged weapon like an HMG to just cover your weakness of being melee, that is your lack of range.
Lycan has to pop core to use its superheavy, but it is efficient, meaning you lose nothing popping it every combat. You lose your tank traits, so what? You gain a baseline 6 speed which is very fast, you get to MOVE full 6 as PART of activating it AND ATTACK.
You don't even need to interact with the core power's main mechanic of "gets stronger when you or allies take structure" because the increase in power from base shock claws is negligible. Whenever you point out that melee sucks, Kai Tave points at Lycan and says "but I fixed it :)"
>>
>>98517679
the reason Massif keeps him around is because he's one of the few people actually still WRITING content for Lancer, and he is unduly praised because everyone runs winter scar and solstice rain (despite both being horrifically unbalanced and borderline bullshit for "beginner friendly intro modules")
And because of his power in community circles like PNET, he can just push out dissenters
Ralf, who made enhanced combat? Excommunicated because uh... he wasn't controlling the retards from his server that were antagonizing pnet users apparently (not his job, he's a writer not a moderator)
Enhanced combat is so widely used though that they can't ban it completely, but they WILL get mad when you dare to imply enhanced combat "might as well be first party"
Third party content creators like Deer (who made Lancer MK.II and Mechanized Wargear Catalog, both incredibly good supplements) for lancer DARE to criticize Kai Tave OR Lancer itself's balance get shunned, ostracized from the community, told to commit suicide on massif's public social media which Kai Tave had access to, and a false cancel campaign brought against them.
Oh let's not forget other third party creators can't criticize pnet in the sanctity of THEIR OWN SERVERS without someone whining to the mods of PNET and them thus now banning them and discussion of their modules anywhere in the server.
It's a true shame because unfortunately, PNET being the biggest lancer community has loads of resources for playing and running the game, locked on the server, and you are at risk of ban for wrongthink which will cause you to lose access to ALL of that.

>>
>>98520670
Are reaction attacks like overwatch not proc it? I want to force overwatch because I have skirmisher 3
>>
>>98520696
the only tie to the lore is that player mechs come in 4 (5 with GMS technically) manufactures but the only true mechanical implication of that is with manufacturer specific core powers requiring a set number of licenses

and even then the game plays fast and loose with it, the Horus license has both a mech that was made by them specifically to help the "can't believe it's not slaves" fight back against their masters, but also a mech made by those masters for the explicit purpose of committing war crimes against uppity workers

it's very easy to reflavor things to cut those out in case you don't want to deal with official lore for your own setting
the Lancer "official" fanbase is fairly rabid in attacking anyone trying to cut out official lore though but that's why you're on 4chan instead of lubing yourself up for a discord moderator
>>
>>98520730
it's just flat out invisible until you're next attacked, so any attack should use up the charge
that said you could always ask the GM to not have attacks against you use up your flicker field charge until you stop being invisible through other means (aka Dusk Wing trait)
Which if I was GM, I would do, because Dusk Wing isn't exactly the best mech in the game so you get a lot more leeway than say, someone playing a Chomolungma

that said, a quick skim over the suldan stuff looks like it earns its reputation as broken garbage, and ive ran solstice rain all the way through for an LL2-LL3 party and i couldnt imagine newbies at LL1 fighting that ultra operator at the end and not get their shit kicked in. and if he hates on ralf its probably because he is jealous of a man who has made quality content based on actual experience running the game instead of theorycrafting in his echo chamber (although the enhanced combat alt frames are also busted and i wouldnt allow)

the only thing I would say comes close is oleander, and it's still balanced by its restrictions. Bligh is a fun alternative to Kidd, Salamander is balanced, Hapsburg is balanced

Oleander is pretty much tailor-made to actually let you line up shots with the railgun
which is pretty powerful admittedly but it's also pretty fun, and the fact you can never overcharge to use a heavy weapon again is fairly significant since a lot of death's head builds eschew the railgun all together and instead go for Gandivas or LBR

though you can still use heavy gunner to line up even more shots as a way to account for the restriction

How come the most based people use Everest builds?
>>

how does that work, does each instance of bonus damage get halved individually for 4 bonus damage or does it get counted together for 3 (since line weapons are AoE)

also it's a dang shame that Toku's range increases don't work on line weapons

I'm very eager myself to start with bloodmoney once i got the moneys to get a copy. One of the problems i have with lancer is that its difficult to get into the head of a character who could just drop all of this at any moment, fly to union space, apply for asylum and receive their government mandated free everything, like why am i putting my life in danger piloting a mech for any of this?

You’re essentially a Union peacekeeper with a heap of the savior complex for the impoverished and barbarians who don’t know how great it is to think like us.
That’s why I like mercenary campaigns. There’s ambition, and there’s a reason you’re putting yourself in mortal danger in your own terms: money. Money can make you rich. It can settle a debt. It can take you back to the Union worlds because you’ve grown up in the diaspora. Or, money is just the added bonus of doing it for the love of the game.
>>
>>98533673
One of my gm pet peeve is this: Treat the galaxy like its the galaxy in the videogame rimworld: sure, there are dozens of planets with star trek tier living conditions, but the further you get away from the well connected core worlds, you get absolutely everything, from small warring empires to planets where people just regressed into tribals etc etc. Never play within union space unless your party/character has a clear motive from it.
One of my player's character comes from one of these advanced core worlds and is mostly doing this for personal glory.
>>
>>98532996
Bonus damage is totaled first, then halved.
>>
>>98532154
precisely, the oleander trades pure damage for consistency
and desu I prefer it over death's head. Death's head's core is fundamentally fucked because it requires a FULL ACTION to re-apply, on a frame that typically uses ordnance weapons (railgun, other artillery weapons) in a game where sitreps can be very short
>>
>>98533673
several things
>for people further away from cradle and the union core worlds, it's expensive and difficult to get transport there
>it takes AGES even with blinkgate travel
>for some people, the quiet comfort of Union space sounds boring
>>
Can you play this without the grid map? I don't have a lot of room at my place for a whole-ass mini wargame table
>>
>>98536200
there's also that tingly feeling when you nail 3 enemies in a row with a railgun shot, which is just about unique to the Oleander given you can actually move before firing to get yourself into position

never ended up doing something that is genuinely overpowered in my games (though I did have to promise to not take nanocomp on it), just a competent mech that makes sniping more fun
after all kill shot is not something you "have" to use every time, so you end up being able to build for what that quick action can do in terms of support
>>
>>98536662
nanocomp is not powergaming especially since some enemies have high Edef so it doesn't really matter
there's little in lancer that is actually broken compared to competently run NPCs
>>
>>98536276
Like theatre of the mind? I wouldnt recommend it.
>>
>>98536676
Nanocomp on large AoE weapons "is" very strong though
Especially on the railgun it lets you shoot through multiple walls and hit enemies behind those, seeking is a seriously powerful trait to add to weapons

course for the death's head it's virtually mandatory if you want to use the railgun without getting cucked by even the remotest bit of intelligence on the enemy's part
>>
>>98533673
>One of the problems i have with lancer is that its difficult to get into the head of a character who could just drop all of this at any moment, fly to union space, apply for asylum and receive their government mandated free everything
Idk, why dont you quit you job and live on welfare?
>>
>>98537426
because living on welfare means eating chicken and rice as a best case scenario while sleeping in your car
>>
>>98537426
I don't think there are any sources that state what a union coreworld citizen gets but it's fair to assume it is pretty rich and makes XXI century first world luxury look like a prison sentence.
>>
>>98537927
part of luxury is exclusivity and that is not going to exist in the core worlds, everything is available for everyone
however in terms of comfort, yes it's probably better than anything we have possibly available on average
>>
>>98533673
>like why am i putting my life in danger piloting a mech for any of this?

I ran Solstice Rain for my group sothat we could all try out Lancer and see how it was. Yeah, that permanently poisoned them against Lancer considering just how brutal it is against brand new people, and I didn't like seeing my player's get their shit kicked in for 3 combats in a row so I just dropped it. I think what further poisoned me against it was when I talked about my dissapoitnment in the diificulty for a scenario meant to onboard new people, I not only got insulted but had so many people tell me it would've been easy for my players if they just all made some powerful combos of gear and ten just repeated actions combinations. Think one of the last things I want to hear as a GM is just tell my players all to play the same way as each other and just repeat the same steps over and over again until they can finally get 1 or 2 new pieces of gear (and then get their asses kicked by later encounters anyways).
>>
>>98538352
Oh wow and i thought that solstice rain was bad just based off the premise.
>planet pretty close appearance wise to earth, no interesting scifi business here
>goodguy nation
>evilnazi nation
>evilnazi invade
>you have to help the goodguy nation
>combat encounter, combat encounter, combat encountet, bossfight, end
That's something i could come up with in an afternoon while feeling lazy. I also had a look at shadow of the wolf and came to the conclusion that wallflower is the only interesting thing they wrote
>>
I'm toying a bit with a shamelessly stolen from TF2 intro mission where the players start out in pilot combat mode in a war zone and have to track down a mech transport whereupon they'll find all the actual pilots are dead and emergency protocols authorize them to hop in the mechs

but finding good advise on how to run pilot combat sections is hard
anyone done any extensive pilot combat?
>>
>>98538343
>Because people generally like to be useful
lmao
>>
>>98538637
My recommendation is to get a rules-light system from some other game of choice and just do that instead during pilot-centric sections. The default is fine for quasi-narrative scuffles with theater of the mind but the second you need to care about actual tactics or positioning then you want something with more teeth.
>>
>>98538944
it's not meant to be that long, just like (hopefully) one session of reaching the transport
but yeh it's very barebones, was hoping there were some expansions or so
>>
>>98539046
No Room For A Wallflower has a clock system that you can sorta scuff into a more robust narrative combat loop but it's not gonna be pretty
>>
>>98539067
thanks I'll check it out
probably just making it harder for myself than it should be, idea of the campaign is supposed to be a civil war campaign and the players are meant to be locals to raise the stakes, so thought it'd be cute to have them not start out as mech pilots

in part stems from funnily enough since other people are talking about it, dissatisfaction with solstice rain and how it was handled and trying to get a much more nuanced conflict between various factions which in turn are supported by various bigger players so the players can actually have a significant input on how the civil war plays out

and thought that them getting mechs in the middle of a combat zone was a good narrative moment but practical matters are annoying

I thought it was cliched as all hell for story, but figured since it was literally the adventure that everyone recommends for beginners that we'd do that and then go from there. I was thinking it was Lancer's version of "Night of Blood" or "Rough Night at the Three Feathers" for WHFRP, ya know, actually good intros that get immediately get everyone in the mindset for the setting and all up on the rules. If anything, I'm glad I ran that so we all got to learn how shit Lancer and it's community are.
>>
Im actually soon to run something similar in nature to solstice rain as the first "Big operation with deeper ties to the overall story" of my merc campaign.
>planet that was once part of the local big empire (whos also a staunch anti-union empire and have a good reason for it due to seccomm oppression) menages to get its independence
>immediately after they just go to war with each other with independents and pro union countries (union did arm them with the union version of the cia trying to pull off a banana republic sort of thing)
>pro union are further divided between those who want to be part of union and those who want to be part of HA
>HA aligned country betrays the others and invades a neutral buffer region since it has the only omninet relay on the planet and a space elevator
>Non HA unionfags make an uneasy alliance with the indipendents to fight with the HA country
>party comes into play as they are hired for "operation parable"

>party boards a civilian ro-ro ferry, they are supposed to hide in it till they are a few hundred km's from the coast, then board drop ships hidden in it and take the airport of a large coastal city (and where the relay is located), with the objective to secure the relay
>as they travel, first they notice a drone circling above them, then later a fighter jet comes to investigate, and depending on how they do (i have a good idea on how they can do well, not sure how they can fuck it up so suggestions are welcome) they may or may not have a fight on the sea protecting the ferry from cruise missiles and bombers
>the airport attack itself its supposed to be a hostomel tier fuck up badly planned and only going well thanks to the party (if they win of course)
i got more planned but im keeping it light because i dont wanna railroad my boys.

I do admit i read solstice rain to get some idea how to do a proper operation, but man that thing is such a railroad, not even a good one at that.

What LL are you at? If you don't want to think Blackbeard is great for just grappling the shit out of people then hitting them with a claymore.
>>
>>98541750
Blackbeard with skirmisher 2 and executioner using a nanocarbon blade
the thing is with Lancer if you go deep into enemy lines you will get swarmed and fucked, and melee is incredibly underpowered compared to ranged weapons
if you want what is actually busted out of the entire list, it's lycan, for melee. It was mentioned earlier in this thread why it's busted.
>>
>>98541826
LL 1 it's supposed to be an introductory one shot for beginners
>>
>>98542058
Then you're not going to really get a "build", you're going to have whatever weapons you think are the coolest strapped to an Everest. You don't get a custom frame until LL2 and it's not until 4-6 where you get anything fleshed out enough to really function with synergy that isn't on-rails within a license.
>>
>>98538663
>>Because people generally like to be useful
Yeah, they do. Enough don't, but if you dangle the opportunity to be important and matter in front of people, a lot will take it. Particurally since, again, in Union you don't need to jump through as many bullshit hoops to achieve this as IRL.
>>
Does anyone have experience with the Metalmark/Amber Phantom

AP is good at doing the shock knife/shock wreath combo because of the main/aux mount. I was a bit worried about that heat buildup on account of it having an SSC heat cap with a 3 heat per round buildup while also being a mech that enjoys seemingly a fair bit of agility so can't quite go all in on engineering

it worth going with some HA licenses to help manage heat?
>>
>>98542831
im normally not a fan of dumping agility like most lancer community recommends but AP has enough evasion and speed along with the hyperawareness that putting your stats into especially eng then hull is a good call. if you want to go down HA to grab SBD as your second core that's fine, Id grab gil 1 for the emergency repair to stack with reactive weave, but you wont have the sp to spare for much else, metalmark licence is pretty self sufficient

in my experience this is only true if you also have reliable sources of giving difficulty to enemy attacks, at least going by crb npcs who get some crazy bonuses to hit. Like I said AP has the tools to make that work, but 12 evasion along with on demand invisibility and difficulty to hit is already enough that you can spare offsetting your weaknesses (in the same way maxing agility as Genghis is actually very viable)

its up to you, and your benefits to bracing along with universal comparability make it so either is viable, honestly Id see what your team is going as because if you have a house guard defender buddy agility would be great

The catholic church is explictly in lancer and No Room for a Wallflower features a catholic sect and references a catholic theocratic state existing elsewhere on Hercynia.

"The Catholic Union Cathedral and the Tomb of St. Tellus are a large cathedral and sepulcher in the Cenote neighborhood, where the Hercynian church of Catholic Union keeps its headquarters. The Tomb of St. Tellus is a holy site dedicated to the remains of St. Tellus, though his earthly remains consist only of a femur and vestments. A folk saint canonized by the Catholic Union on Hercynia (but not yet by the broader Catholic Union church, due to Hercynia’s isolation from the rest of the galaxy), St. Tellus was said to have been a martyr who led human survivors through the aftermath of the Hercynian Crisis to find safety in the hives. The worship of St. Tellus continues to thrive among the Union Catholics of Hercynia, making his resting place an important religious site for the people of Hivehome."

And you will never know if your good intentions will lead to good actions without being omnipotent. Maybe you saving that man's life leads to him murdering 5 people. Maybe you helping someone who needs it now means you can't help more people later. All we have is our intentions, there's no way to actually know the full consequences of our actions.

lol you're either demented or so fucked about being wrong you've had to do whatever this is.
Wait till you hit phil 101, you'll lose your marbles.
>>
>>98549692
>just takes a philosophy 101 class and then becomes a utilitarian

Lol way to prove the stereotype, let me know when someone actually figures out how to empirically measure and compare utility and then I'll take you seriously.
>>
>>98549812
>Lol way to prove the stereotype
>some pseudo intellectual garbage
No one cares if you take them seriously you idiot. You've already pissed yourself publicly enough its too late for that.
>>
>>98549654
That's my point. Motives matter less than actions. They're both doing more than the person yapping.

Running metalmark, works as a skirmisher with some melee but is too fragile for sustained frontline combat
>>
Friends, I come bearing a question.
Scylla NHP gives a skirmish twice per round.
There's also the rule where every action can only be used once per round
Can I use Scylla NHP to react with the same mount twice per round, assuming both activations are Scylla activations? Or do I need to have two non-vorpal mounts to take full advantage of Scylla?
>>
>>98550447
duplicate actions is 1x action per turn
Scylla is 2x skirmish per round

so the only thing you can't do is take 2 Scylla actions on the same enemy turn, but you can just take them on 2 separate enemy turns
>>
>>98550549
>duplicate actions is 1x action per turn
Oh, thank you anon. I was not aware that that was the distinction

Recently started reading the books and keen on playing soon. What would be the best option for more of a “knight” build. Seen people mention the Blackbeard and lycan but want the flavour too.
>>
>>98549089
The Blood Money supplement which people use to play as mercenaries has its entire loop revolved around the party picking missions that factor in their payout, and then spending that money on reserves, exotic gear, or base upgrades.
>>
If this is a communist utopia how do players get paid for their job? Is money even a thing? And when they need something how do they acquire? Is ask9ng for stuff enough to get it?

Like, why would crime even be a thing since you can just get whatever you want?
>>
>>98551932
in terms of looks, the Orchis literally has a shield that's part of it's core features and is physically designed to resemble plate armor

the Nelson is designed around charging with a pike, if that's more the knight type you enjoy as well

the Atlas is a mech created for semi-ritualized mech combat by the feudal faction, though it's more of a skirmisher than a stand and fight type

and mechs overall are pretty flexible in what they can do or be, so any mech with good armor can be turned into a competent knight
>>
>>98552254
Those questions are likely why the games are supposed to take place on the fringes of the communist utopia, where you’re using your giant robots to terrorize primitive barbarian cultures into submitting to cultural enrichment. And the main reward are licenses, aka access to bigger and nastier robots with which to terrorize primitive barbarian cultures into submitting to cultural enrichment.
>>
>>98551932
>>98552268
Nelson and orchis are your best bets, sagarmatha is also a really good starting choice because of its banner
>>98552270
never understood the "supposed" yall like to say the book tells is the right way to play even though the book has example scenarios for being in harrison armory (le heckin nazis) and ssc (le heckin eugenics)
>>
>>98552270
don't forget making yourself so invaluable and irreplaceable you can get away with increasingly more BS against said primitives
>>

why even waste ink on writing about grorius gay luxury brown trans utopia that has a mandate of heaven and omniscient ai and shit when it's not even supposed to matter at all ever

>If this is a communist utopia
only for like 1% of the people who live on planets that have been union's "core worlds" for millennia
>how do players get paid for their job? Is money even a thing?
depends on who are the players, are they the most reddit union peacekeepers fighting for good boy points? They are basically modern fighter pilots, they could probably get better shit by using their skills working as engineers or test pilots for some military corp, but they do this out of a sense of duty or personal glory, they probably dont even touch money everything is handed to them.

are they karrakis space knights? they are rich already and i dunno, spend all the money in frivolous shit and space tourneys, if they need something they just wave their "marquis signed manna bank platinum tier" credit card and get it

Are they random space truckers who cobbled togheder their mechs out in bumfuck of nowhere? money is a thing and its tight, you better go kick a pirates face in so you can ransom them back for money or bounties so you can fuel your space drug addiction

are they mercs? [mechwarrior 2/5 mercs theme starts playing]

the setting is pretty big and left mercifully not too described that you have space to make up everything you want, some gm's dont care about money so their players get shit because they are valuable pilots and whoever is their patron wants to keep them happy

if you are like me they gotta earn their space bread to pay for their space drugs

>why would crime even be a thing since you can just get whatever you want?
Im sure the crime rate on the 40 planets that are both union core worlds (therefore not part of the karrakis baronies, corps etc) and are developed enough to larp as star trek, the rest of the trillions upon trillions of people doesnt live in post scarcity lalaland (besides considering how a bunch of rich kids i know became drug traffickers im sure theres more than survival to committing crimes)
>>
>>98552292
Still has a lot of scenarios where you’re stomping primitive barbarians with giant robots.

really? Im currently thinking of possible campaigns to run with my irl group, and a "heart of darkness/east india company in space" campaign sounds like the kind of stuff for my despicable players.
Which scenario are you referring to if i can ask?
>>
>>98552326
Just change it to being Harrison stomping those brown primitives. Hell make a scenario where youre second committee rolling in with flamethrowers to total biome kill the bug aliens. Or be like me and run it in a whole different starship troopers setting where all the mechs are being used to stomp bugs because that's the game my players wanted. Now youre BASED anon!
>>
>>98552348
Think there’s an entire rebellion movement on one of the trade barony planets outright labeled ”the Ungratefuls”, so go nuts.

I fully respect that initiative, show.

Ty, I was leaning towards the Blackbeard, but I’ll check them out. I do want to primarily use melee though. Is it hard to find games on the discord?

sure anon, this was their last fight they had taking down an ultra goliath reflavored as a hierophant, they'll be LL6 when they level up. currently they are rolling in a nelson, genghis, and black witch. they all have only really played 5E and the black witch player appreciates how doing support stuff is actually cool

im sorry anon, im more for drawing people than mechs(for example the helmet in this picture is traced), if it makes you feel better the initial design was made by the player i just used the slop to turn the sketch into a pixel token

Does anyone have a download for LANCER Tactics. I’m not paying $20

It's almost like they've never looked at the book or played the game and are just echoing something someone else said who also probably never looked at the book or played the game

>main reward is licenses
Licenses always seemed like a flimsy piece od fluff to me. In this world of omniscient AI, scifi computer magic and Horus; nobody knows how to jailbreak a mech? Or a printer?
Whats stopping your horus hackerman player from printing everyone a fully blinged out monarch? Right outside unionspace there should be nothing but jailbroken corpostuff.
>>
>>98553763
umm lil chuddy insell yall it do be paracausal that cannot be paracausaled away, quantum even algo o
>>
>>98553763
The same technology you're suggesting could be used to break encryption, can be used to make the encryption stronger. That said, there probably IS jailbroken corpo stuff out there, it's just hard to track down because instead of sending out C&D letters the corpos send kill teams if they find out you hacked their stuff.
>>
>>98554123
You mean the kill teams that are going to take like 250 years to home in on your last known position that by that point is outdated by at least 80 years?
>>
>>98554154
Says who? Yeah travel can be slow but if you can hack them that means you have Omninet access which means they can just as easily send orders to someone in your area.

That in and of itself is an adventure hook, on either side of things.

So i've been told Lancers are basically celebrities and they have literal fanclubs following their exploits and don't pay for anything.

Is this like how its supposed to be from the very start?
>>
>>98554361
Keep in mind that everyone plays as some kind of trans lesbeanian ex idol celebrity or some shit o algo.
>>
>>98554361
By default Lancers are damn good mech pilots even at the lower LLs, but I'd say less "celebrities" and more something between the infamy of the gundam pilots and the mystique of a fighter pilot ace. As your circle widens more people will have heard of you and there might be someone willing to buy you a round in exchange for conversation, but even it's more likely your callsign is recognized than your mech and far more likely your mech is recognized than your face.
