Why do players constantly want to "reuse" old characters they've made, that are inevitably quirk chunguses that don't fit the setting at all, and have to be "weird" or "different" or have such a bizarre alien mindset that it is impossible to take them seriously>bro the first thing you have to understand about my character is, he's literally INSANEAnd that's all they want to play. And NO ONE ELSE sees a problem with this. I get it when it's D&Dslop but when it's a campaign people are trying to take seriously it's just obnoxious.
I just want to play my Eternal Champion who exists in all universes.
>doesn't understand comfort in familiarityThere's a reason why most settings are just medieval fantasy, and humans and elves the most popular races
>>98472237The issue is not reusing old characters.Hell, the post is telling me the issue isn't even reusing tired old jokes. The issue is you've decided to try to get into a group activity with people who's idea of fun you vehemently disagree with.Nothing wrong with recycling a character concept. Nothing wrong with playing a joke character, assuming you aren't ruining the game for everyone else at the table. Plenty wrong with trying to force a particular game style on everyone else at the table, assuming you aren't the GM.
>>98472248yeah but this isn't that, and these fags re-use the same character anyway. it doesn't matter. I don't care if it's familiar. they accuse me of making boring characters, but at least I make one that fits the setting instead of repeatedly using the same quirk chungus (who has no personality aside from that shit)
I imagine there's a lot of people in class-based systems such as D&D and Pathfinder who can't be bothered learning the rules and builds of more than one class.Consider playing CoC and giving them pre-made investigators. Even the female ones. Playing a completely different character with every scenario might be a wake up call for your players.
>>98472301They do this across multiple systems though. That's the thing. And the characters are sometimes technically compatible, but if not, they'll "reimagine" them for a different setting. And they can't be taken seriously at all. it's all "old man henderson" tier stupid shit.
>>98472242Baste and moorcockpilled
>>98472237What's so hard to understand? That is a character that they emotionally identify with? That they want familar archetypes? Tezuka and Leiji Matsumoto used to do this shit all the time in their works. If you're running the game, it's usually not hard to work with or around them because they tend to be very predictable. Using the same archetypes that they're familiar with, in new settings. If you're playing with them, they're just a form of predictable quirk chungus. You arlready know where they're going to be, character wise. Stake out your own position that makes sense for you and the story.
>>98472237If you are the DM you are going to need to boot their ass into shape and learn manipulation and mind control tactics to get them into character. Only engage with people the moment they actually take something seriously. Do not give positive or negative feedback when they do something stupid and if you have to make a reaction make it as flat and boring as possible.
>>98472237Because such players view those characters as idealized self inserts. Your not running a game, your providing escapist therapy for a batch of "people" who hate what they are.
>>98472237They watched too many real plays and think they are building a brand
>>98472237Because they are in the hobby for all the wrong reasons, quite simply.
>>98472420possibly. I mean I know that only one of them does that, but surely they would realize that liveplay characters don't usually "come back" between campaigns...right?
>>98472485How retarded are they? Be honest
>>98472237I've reused names but not characters outright unless it's a legacy campaign following a previous one in that same world and timeline. I would never try and graft a preexisting character to an entirely different campaign, that's just lazy.
>>98472510They're pretty good at the systems we play and relatively intelligent. Just slaves to HAHA LE EPIC QUIRKINESS and shouting a lot.
>>98472237why are you playing with people you don't like?
>>98472237I can wanting to reuse a character if their game didn't go well and said character never got a satisfying ending.I had to leave a game abruptly due to scheduling and a new baby, but I really like the character so I wouldn't mind giving them another go.Or sometimes, you feel like you could have done the character better in some way.
>>98472237>whyA variety of reasons.>people are trying to take seriouslyThis is a GM issue. Quirky characters are fine as long as the game world reacts appropriately. The issue is when the GM has gotten it into their head that their job is to enable the players to do whatever the fuck they want, however they want it. If you're playing Warhammer fantasy and a player wants to play a character with three hats and no shoes who only speaks in rhymes, then let them. Someone in the game world will react to their nonsense and then unto the pyre they go.
>>98472237Thanks for making me appreciate my playgroup EVEN more.
>>98472237So do you have a problem with recurring characters, characters that don't fit in, or the Chaotic Neutral thieflings who are just as bipolar as the woman playing them? Or is it just trouble finding the right table of people to play with?
>>98473753Funny kot.
>>98472237Why are you playing games whose character options don't fit in, or why are you houseruling your games to have options that don't fit in?Why do they need to be taken seriously?
>>98472237Conan can exist in any media without it feeling too out of place. Same with Riddick, & a few other characters. Theres a certain timeless quality about a omni-competent but unlearned man with a bit of primal avatism & subtle charm. You can put them in any scenario & they can roll with it, they dont feel out of place, they are the adventure genre nomad
>>98472237Same reason why people want to regale you with stories of sessions they've had before. They know nobody cares.
>>98472237Its normal to have comfort archetypes for characters you playFor example i ofter like to make characters that are priests/holy knights struggling with their holy mission You just have to be willing to experiment But if your player is acting obnoxious then you should just fucking talk to them, thsts not character problem, thats player problem Work something out or kick them from your group
>>98472237You sound upset. Does replaying an old PC hurt your feelings?
>>98472237Never had that problem, must be a you issue.
Why are you playing games whose character options don't fit in, or why are you houseruling your games to have options that don't fit in?Why do they need to be taken seriously?
>>98472237because they want you to fuck off and never talk to them againand the next people you find will do the sameand the nextand the nextand the nextdo not speak to anybody ever again, online and offline. lock yourself away from the world and rot. spare the world the misery that is sharing existence with you. kill yourself. NOW.
>>98473039I feel that and have had that experience myself. But these guys don't even really roleplay the character any better. It's just "oh here's this same quirk chungus again" and they are always "le chaotic super badass who is not to be fucked with and also acts like an amalgam of various YouTube / Vine memes">>98472531Yeah they do the same name and everything.>>98473209>Quirky characters are fine as long as the game world reacts appropriately.Wrong, because it disrupts the story that they even exist in the first placeinb4>storyYes RPGs have stories, we're not all playing OSR games all day long. Not that there's anything wrong with that.>>98473753>finding the right table to play atSome of us play with our friends. I am so tired of this gay-ass libertarian faggotry of "uhh just leave your group if you aren't having fun because everyone plays with randos they met on roll20 last month"
>>98482220>Some of us play with our friends. You bitch and whine about your "friends" to anonymous strangers. You don't have friends.>I am so tired of this gay-ass libertarian faggotryLeave it to the nofriends to bring up politics.
>>98472237Stop joining public games
le table gaem iz srs bznss
>>98482220>Wrong, because it disrupts the story that they even exist in the first placehave you considered the possibility that your story is gay and nobody but you cares about it? is everybody other than you having a good time with the way things have been going, in spite of the great injustice being done to your 100% meaningful and unique story?
>>98487125It's not "my story" retard, I'm not a railroading DM. It's OUR story and I don't care where they take the plot, but if they're making dogshit characters that don't fit the tone of the game, that's because they're retarded.
>>98494556Maybe you should've told them you're an autistic sperg during session 0 and threaten to boot them if their characters didn't align with your specific vision for the setting
