Honestly?
There are a lot of options.
You could play Mythras for instance, if you like BRP and mythology.
Or Runequest Classic, which is all things considered, probably the better version than the modern incarnation, and is for sure cheaper.

Shit, older editions of D&D, or stuff like second edition warhammer fantasy roleplay are out there, or Dark Heresy and shit.

This IS /tg/, there are other worlds than this.

You could also play skirmish games as narrative campaign/leagues like I do, since I mostly play Quar and Frost/Stargrave and Classic Battletech.

But then, I'm a miniatures and dioramas guy.

I admire this approach, anon. But to be honest with you my autism forces me to make characters I feel are well crafted and then to roleplay them to the fullest. I don't know how this happens, but when making a character they just come fully formed in my mind in a sudden epiphany. It takes me about 10 seconds to know exactly who I'm going to be in a campaign and then l commit to it.

None of the characters revealed to me yet have been complete shit slinging monkeys. The closest was when I was possessed by the spirit of dwarf barbarian that drank copious alcohol and fist fought town guards and violently assaulted anyone that looked at him funny.

>What's it like to play?
My friend has described it as, "Tabletop Gambling" and I'm inclined to agree. Mechanically, Pendragon operates on a Roll Under system (unless it's not, the rules have exceptions) using a d20 and modifiers. Pic related is a character sheet; you have Skills (self explanatory), Passions, and Traits. Traits are the sum total of your character's personality, and is often evoked when the player has to make a moral decision ("it's what my character would do.") Passions, meanwhile, are things your character feels strongly about. Treat it like a sort of ancillary Trait, where a character's hatred for Saxons (in this case, 21) would push an otherwise Merciful character to kill Saxon prisoners.

Narratively, Pendragon's Grand Campaign is an exhaustive year-by-year playthrough of the Arthurian Cycle. You start under the reign of Uther, and end at Camlann. A span of 70-80 years. Your character is a Knight of (usually) Salisbury whose lineage plays a role or simply watches the entire legend play out. The game itself is slavishly devoted to the romance and realism of knighthood; your knight owns an estate which you can improve with buildings (say, beehives) which offer mechanical benefits alongside cash. You go to feasts, hunts and quests. You must decide who to marry, because some women come with land (see, more cash) but can also come with problems (infertility, political danger.)
-
[1/2]
>>
>>98473850
When your Utherian knight gets too old, you swap him out with your son, and eventually you swap that knight out with his son. Realistically, this means you get to participate directly in the Uther/Anarchy period, the Boy King/Conquest/Tournaments period, and Grail/Twilight period. These distinctions are important because the tone and even CharGen of the game changes depending on the era - it's a common joke that Uther knights are little more than armored thugs, and Twilight Knights are legendary swordsmen but more concerned with poetry and, "the good old days under Uther." Mordred professes that the world has gotten too soft and decadent, and operates under a very contemporary, "Hard Times breed Hard Men, Good Times breed weak men, etc." This is extra delightful because, while your knights might agree, the players remember what life was like under Uther, and it sucked.

Pendragon is ponderous. Pendragon is long. Pendragon can, at times, be stressful. Yet, despite it all, Pendragon might be the single most important game you and your group ever play. It's the Hajj of tabletop. There is absolutely nothing about the game I can frankly say is "poor" or "poorly-managed" except, say, Siege mechanics. Pendragon was made by a single guy, Greg Stafford, and that alone makes it even more impressive. Pendragon is not the antithesis of modern gaming, but rather the romantic ideal that games should strive to be; deeply-specific explorations of well-known eras built around telling a story your players will remember forever using rules that automate as much of a character's "personality" as possible.

Redman, I swear I'll invite you to my Grand Campaign set in Westeros when I finish my current PF2e campaign, I got the Culture sheets and everything!

I am OP and this was delightful to read. It sounds like a project of pure and unfiltered passion. This may be the exact thing I've been looking for. I'll start reading the rulebook and learning more about the setting as I'm not overly familiar with arthurian legend but wow, a ttrpg that plays like the warband or crusader kings videogames? I need to try this.
>>

I know they have Paladin for those who prefer Matter of France over Matter of England, but I've sort of entertained the idea of Sengoku where it's the same idea but medieval Japan and you start in the Sengoku Era, witness the rise of Nobunaga, and end in the beginning of the Edo Period.
>>
>>98473876
Word of advice, there are multiple editions of Pendragon and they *do* matter. Specifically, 6e has the players as House Knights which means you're even lower-power than 5e, where your knights have their own land. Since you're looking for the quintessential Pendragon experience, you want to play 5e before you even look at 6e.

The books you'll want are the following,
>Book of Knights and Ladies
>Book of Feasts
>Book of the Estate
>Pendragon (the CRB)
>Pendragon: The Great Pendragon Campaign
>>
If there were some sort of scale here with manly games at one end and girly games at the other, 5e D&D would be mildly manly, so the antithesis would be something like Call of Cthulhu which is only a little bit girly. That’s why everyone is telling you to play a D&D-like or a different plunder-based medieval fantasy wargame, it’s because this is the manliest genre.
>>98473037
>>98473075
lol, Pendragon is a beautiful and highly-heterosexual game but it is still less manly than 5e D&D. You quest around Arthur’s Britain, and you repel heathen invaders, and you raise a noble family/dynasty and do politics to protect them as the years go by. It is not a game about player agency, it is a game that gives you a set number of choices within a pre-determined epic that spans generations, but your choices matter. It’s also a game where knights are men and ladies are women, a lot of people who have never played it still love it for that, but the creators have always told people to play female knights anyway if they want (this is a very old game, so it’s not modern gender politics, it’s just a sincere take on Arthurian storytelling conventions and it’s too old to cancel).

A guy on here said he was using it for Game of Thrones (starting well before Rob’s rebellion). I know GoT doesn’t fit Pendragon but Pendragon (the system) certainly fits GoT.

>>
>>98473935
Pendragon is not so much a system as it is a romantic fancy. You can run a Pendragon campaign in any era or legend that follows the Arthurian model;
>Age of Barbarism
>Age of Chaos
>Age of Hope
>Age of Wonders
>Age of Quests
>Age of Ending
I would personally set a Samurai game with the “Barbarism” being Nobunaga and the “ending” being the opening of Japan by Commodore Perry, but that’s a long long period of time. Too much for any practical game. It would be kino if you had the “twilight” be the start of the Edo period and then have an epilogue where Perry arrives and your great great grandchildren are there to see it.

Because that’s the essence of Pendragon; times were bad, times got worse, times get better and then great, and then it all ends in a heart-wrenching finale that poets will sing of for generations. The ideal Twilight Period for a Westeros game then would be the Dance of Dragons or the Tragedy of Summerhall, because that’s when House Targaryen lost their magic (for the former) or lost their power (for the latter.) The collapse of the dream is the end of the game, not the collapse of the government.

Coincidentally, this is why me and my fellow players hate Merlin in Pendragon. The Druid deep state is real, that fucker better start walking briskly away from us.

This seems like a completely artificial rationalization and evokes the "our glorious conquerors vs their rampaging hordes" meme. Both cases are "traditional warriors, but women." Any extra context only exists at individual tables.

The best thing about RaHoWa is that it gives the various non-white races a bunch of racist traits (e.g. black people get bonuses to throwing spears), but then it completely neglects to give white people any stereotypical bonuses, thus making them objectively inferior.

During the Anarchy, our knights of Salisbury find the lands of Logres in terrible danger; Uther Pendragon is dead following the Treachery of Saint Albans, and the Collegium has failed to elect a new High King. The king's eldest son Madoc is long dead, slain by the Duke of Cornwall, and his youngest, Arthur, was taken by Merlin under mysterious circumstances. The line of Pendragon is no more. Queen Ygraine has absconded to a nunnery, miserable by the loss of her son and husbands, and the Saxon menace has risen to threaten the borders of our fair lands. King Aesc, King Aelle, King Aethelswith and King Cerdic of Kent, Sussex, Essex and Wessex respectively. They demand tribute from the county of Salisbury, and our Countess - Lady Ellen, whose husband (our late and beloved Roderick) was among the dead at the Treacherous Feast.

Yet even still, our knights will not stand idle. Amidst the chaos, the Lady Meleri of Rydychan called upon any able-bodied knight for aid to retake her county from traitor-knights who rose up to supplant her - as they deign it, a woman's place is not to rule. Our knights were enticed to aid her - as Chivalry has yet to be invented yet, their motivations were rather pragmatic; the lands of Rydychan are wealthy and populous, neighboring Salisbury with the famed city of Oxford within. Lady Meleri has only one child, a daughter, and is still exceedingly beautiful. Marriage would be on the table, and with it, the riches of Oxford.

And so our knights did their research, learning of the traitor-knights that took control of Rydychan; it was brothers three; Basile, Bege, and Beleus. They learn more of their behaviors, that Bege is temperamental and Basile prideful, and that Bege is prone to issuing challenges against any who trespass upon their land. A scheme is concocted.
>>
>>98475093
-
Our brave Sir Gwyn and Sir Judoc would ride out to meet Bege in combat, while Sir Faunus and Lady Aelfwynn lay siege to Castle Wallingford upon the river. Sir Bege met Sir Gwyn and Sir Judoc afield, demanding answer for their ingress into "his" lands. Sir Judoc called out our motivation, that we are here to retake the County from traitors for Lady Meleri. Sir Bege takes issue, and demands challenge. It was in this moment that Sir Bege made his fatal mistake; Sir Judoc, in the first pass, rolled a critical hit with his Sword skill, while Sir Bege failed his. The damage done was such that, in a single pass, the traitor's head was cloven clean from his shoulders. It was then that Sir Judoc made challenge to the mustered men, that Sir Bege is dead and Lady Meleri has come to reclaim her lands, and that they must yield and join us in conquest. He succeeded the Oration check, and our numbers were greatly doubled that day.

Returning to Castle Wallingford, our knights find Sir Faunus and Lady Aelfwynn in the thick of siege. They announce the death of Sir Bege, and that Sir Beleus within Castle Wallingford will be claimed soon enough. It was then that we saw the forces of Sir Basile crest the hill. The man had thought our numbers far smaller than expected - the siege force alone, it seemed - and was unready for how much force the Salisbury knights could muster. Assault was issued, and our knights charged into their midst to destroy the unprepared foe.

Yet it was in this battle that we were met with tragedy; during the rout, our brave Sir Judoc was combating three spearmen, when one managed a crit that exceeded his Unconscious score. He was issued a major wound, and unhorsed to fall as death upon the field. Our knights fear he may not live to see the dawn, even as victory was made plain by the rout Sir Basile's forces undertook.

Very tangential, but I'm quite excited for my next knight. I'm playing Sir Gwyn ap Gwair, a broad-chested and thick-bearded knight of Salisbury who married a hag lady-knight (37 and childless) whose fertility was restored after a rather ponderous quest by Merlin to produce a potion which started pumping out kids. Things were looking well until my first son died (kids die a lot in this game, it's rolled every Winter Phase) which meant my second child, a little youth named Elad, would be my heir and player knight during the Boy King era. This got me particularly excited, because Elad was also a Blessed Birth (something you can draw as part of Feast Cards, Feasts are both terrifying and wonderful in this game) whose "Blessing" was "Naturally Charming - gain +5 to Flirt."

Between Naturally Charming and Sir Gwyn's wife being a natural platinum blonde, I knew exactly what character art I had to choose for my next knight (pic related.) He's going to have high ranks in Compose and cultivate roses because Arthurian myth fuckin' loves Theme Knights. If you can have an Invisible Knight or Savage Knight, why not play a Rose Knight? Pic related.
>>
>>98475132
Meant to add this for "Rose Knight." The tech levels in Pendragon are intentionally vague; King Uther is viciously "realistic" with player "knights' being little more than chainmail-wearing horsemen wielding long spears, but by the time of Arthur you get plate armor, firearms and even Tennis. I'm excited for tennis, I hear it's an easy way to make tons of Glory.

I just got home and read this. Everything feels grand and romantic but also incredibly lethal. I do like how the early generation of knights are pragmatists but I imagine Elad will represent a shift toward being more cultured and noble especially if he secures a strong marriage to expand his family's demesne. He would be an excellent bridge from his father's time to a more civilized and organized era.

The Compleat Arduin, it's sort of like what FATAL was trying to be, but with less of a focus on sex and more out-there fantasy. It has a lot of randomization, a lot of edginess, and is arguably the most detailed OD&D spinoff (it's not ruleslite trash like every other rugpull retroclone that pretends to be realistic is, because it isn't a retroclone).

>>
>>98485588
I played an in-person LARP (FanWar palo alto) that technically branched off of Arduin although its rules were very different and simplified for real-time. While my ideal game preferences were already similar to what the designers of FATAL wanted (a fantastical game with tables for everything, randomization rather than point-buy, and realism that ignored morality), which I had thought was a combination that did not exist in any serious game, when I looked at Arduin it was the closest existing game to what I wanted (although abandoned and very few play it due to the audience of RPGs being more normie now), and it also was an example of how the world could be more fantastical than AD&D (rather than less fantastical, which FATAL is) while still having simulationism and immersion. A lot of it has to be read to be understood (you can find some examples on https://archive.4plebs.org/tg/search/filename/arduin/ext/pdf/)
>>
I really want to understand the mind of the faggots itt that are calling OP a chud. How can they defend a game about killing dragons with swords looking like a commercial for AIDS medication playing at a pride parade? Why are they like this?

>>
>>98486392
Also, the reason I posted it in this thread in the first place is that it was made in the 1980s and would be refreshingly edgy by today's standards, having ability modifiers by sex, the first table ever (in the Compleat Arduin trilogy) is a table for optionally determining an IRL racial appearance for human characters, there are genital critical hits, there is a courtesan class, rape exists in the setting (although there aren't rules for it) and there are a lot of really out-there demons and undead monsters. And the best edition IMO is Compleat Arduin, since Arduin Grimoire is more of an OD&D addon rather than its own game and Arduin Eternal is oversimplified like 4e.
