can we replace the insult 'nogames' with the term 'theorygamer'?
there are all sorts of valid reasons someone might not literally, actually play games.
>>
/tg/ - Theory Games
>>
>>98475689
said gamer would actually have to have something resembling a theory. So spotlights' on you. Name a single theory worth giving a fuck about that doesn't come from active play or players?
>>
You do what you like, OP. Most of the reason that “nogames” is an insult at all isn’t just because they haven’t played a tabletop tame, it’s because they’re acting like an expert on the subject they have no experience in. It’s like a quack doctor or armchair psychologist. Someone being inexperienced is one thing, being lectured by a know-nothing know-it-all is another.
>>
I prefer "gamechud" since people playing games are the real cancer of this board, gamechud.
>>
>>98475769
RPGs would be more fun if you had to actually go in caves and fight real monsters
>>
>>98475824
Minds eye theater, nutty putty edition. You should leave now. make sure your will is up to date.
>>
>>98475770
The reason idiots try to use it as an insult is because they're the kind of human trash that desperately tries to separate everyone who disagrees with them as "the other." And, with no actual qualifications to place themselves in a higher caste, they're settling for what's essentially the lowest common denominator while pretending that the person they disagree with has failed to reach that mark.

'Nogames' is, ultimately, a meaningless phrase used by faggots, usually at the very first instant of disagreement, with the faggot trying to present that they have incredibly high opinions of themselves simply because they 'play games,' as if this was some amazing accomplishment or doing so means they have elite status and their opinions are worth more.

In many ways, it's like a guy who mows your lawn trying to fit in with botanists, and upon entering any discussion immediately tells everyone they need to touch grass and that anyone who disagrees with him has never touched grass in their life.

To even try to assert someone doesn't play games is the kind of notion that comes from someone who imagines it would be hard to do so, ie. someone who came here from some other board/website just to stir shit up, and for these genuine "others", before anyone would call them 'nogames" more substantial insults would emerge, like /pol/-tard.
>>
>>98475906
Tl;dr
Play some games and then people might read your diatribes.
>>
>>98475906
You’re definitely not wrong, but the amount of trolls trying to turn the idea of someone who actually plays games into an insult like >>98475779 whether out of irony or not is becoming just as poisonously retarded.
>>
>>98475689
Sounds like something a nogames would post. I'd invite you to join my upcoming new game, but since we're not playing D&D 5e you wouldn't be interested.
>>
>>98476151
are you playing 4E, and do you have all the miniatures/tiles? (i would accept nothing less.)
>>
>>98475689
Solo boardgames and wargames exist, so no there is not a valid reason to be a nogames. We just need to recognize that ninetynine times out of one hundred, when somebody cries nogames, they're an actual nogames who uses /tg/ as a replacement for actual play and is projecting his pathetic life onto everybody else.
>>
>>98476164
I'm playing CosmereRPG using FoundryVTT.
>>
>>98475689
No, because a nogames isn't someone who just isn't currently playing in a game, but someone who has potentially never played. Someone who puts on the act of knowing shit about D&D, usually, by making vague, imprecise statements about the way fantasy ought to be and how it feels in their head, if they were the President of Fantasy. They may not even read fantasy novels or engage with any classic fiction, but a nogames still feels the need to tell you the right and correct way to play games he doesn't know anything about.
>>
>>98475689
Just asking them what game or system they're talking about already causes incandescent rage, why change it?
>>
>>98475906
I get the feeling if someone asked you "what system?" right now, it would cause you to go on for a few hundred more posts, arguing with people about the sanctity of /tg/ being ruined by gatekeepers.
>>
>>98475689
>there are all sorts of valid reasons someone might not literally, actually play games.
And why should this person stay on the "traditional GAMES' board?
>>
>>98475689
Clearly it bothers you, so we will keep calling you nogames until you either leave or play a game.
>>
>>98475689
Theory? Nogames repulsed by very idea to learn anything about TTRPGs even by osmosis. They just spam.
>>
>>98475906
tldr but you don't play games
>>
>>98476228
>>98476257
All we're really asking for is the most basic, surface level understanding of how these fucking games are actually played with real people. Fuck's sake, most people who constantly shit up this board could fake their way through it convincingly if they just watched some random cunts on youtube playing an RPG or wargame or whatever, but they can't even be bothered to do that.

What every single one of these threads doesn't point out is that questions like 'what magic system do the demons use to piss in your setting' are absurdly disconnected from how games work.

Okay, so you've designed a magic system based on the elements. Is this for your own homebrew? If it's tacked onto DND, can you convince anybody else to use this custom magic system instead of DND's? Is your system fluff/reflavouring of DND's magic?

If you can't convincingly answer any of this, then why are we even talking about it? Is this just a masturbatory literary exercise where you want validation for your ideas? I don't see what's fun in aimlessly asking vague, surface level questions about fantasy tropes or peoples' nonexistent settings.

I've seen hundreds of threads like that and they rarely ever any meaningful discussion in them. You ask a question like 'what are the giants like in your setting', and you get maybe a dozen replies like 'dead' or 'my giants sit in clouds and fart thunderbolts', to which nobody actually replies to each other, especially not the OP. Who finds this banal repetition fun?
>>
>>98476509
>Is this just a masturbatory literary exercise where you want validation for your ideas?
That’s basically it in a nutshell.

>I don't see what's fun in aimlessly asking vague, surface level questions about fantasy tropes or peoples' nonexistent settings.
People want to get their ideas out there, but don’t want to go through the work of actually putting pen to paper or using it in a project. You yourself noted how “nobody actually replies to each other, especially not the OP”, and that’s because it’s not for anyone else, just for themselves. They have an entire /world building general/ seemingly to put their ideas up for public critique and asspats, but they curiously never use it in favor of starting threads all for themselves.
>>
>>98475689
>valid reason not to play a game
Sure.
>valid reason to think that his opinion about a game that he doesn’t play matters
No.
>>
>>98476178
>using FoundryVTT.
oh, so you're a nogames after all.
>>
>>98476339
the world's most popular RPG was once a dungeon crawler with wilderness and city sections, while players cracked a few jokes.
now it's an improv storygame, and the change is primarily because of a few streamers/YouTube shows. The Forge used to scoff at D&D for *not* being storygames, now look at it.
those surface level default assumptions of yours aren't set in stone.
>>
>>98476509
I think the "how has this impacted the last session of your game?" and similar posts don't quite fully capture the full incredulity being aimed at these pointless, masturbatory questions. Even if you only started playing RPGs yesterday, you can immediately pick up on the fact that the way these people talk about shit on /tg/ doesn't make a lick of fucking sense, even in broad generalities. Even just in terms of worldbuilding and setting development.

The most glaringly obvious problem is that these pointless questions never seem to factor in running or playing a game with other people. Like the peepeepoopoo magic idea. How is this being presented? Did this guy create a whole new set of mechanics? If so, why can't he talk in specific terms? The elves in his "setting" are one way or another with some elaborate nonsense tied to their culture? How the fuck is that actually being used in a game. Does he think GMs and DMs have their own singular "setting" they created where they painstakingly details every fucking nook and cranny, which is why he's pretending to be a real person who plays games and knows how these things work, even though he clearly doesn't even know the basics of how dice and conversation are used to play the fucking game?

And maybe we'd be be willing to humor them if they just didn't pretend like they were one of "us" (people who know the most basic shit about playing games) and didn't get so offended and assblasted when people dare to inquire why they're being such a dumb, annoying faggot who can't even fake basic understanding of the hobby. It's not even like they're just misguided writers who want help developing the world of their novel, either. So genuinely, what's the fucking point of coming here and asking
>Should elves have to poop from their mouths????
>>
>>98475689
No because its a slur, the point is to be insulting not categorical

>>98475906
Nogames
>>
>>98476538
>People want to get their ideas out there, but don’t want to go through the work of actually putting pen to paper or using it in a project.
I've yet to see a single instance of this ever happening. If someone is just working on something, they'll say so. They will articulate the problem they have and what they're struggling to figure out. The people showing up to /tg/ and making threads like
>do your fantasy races have dimorphic attributes? or is that a matter of fluff, rather than crunch?
These people aren't working on a fucking thing. There's no actual idea or problem to be solved for them. It's not even for them, because if they really just needed an answer, they could go look for one. They aren't worldbuilding, they aren't homebrewing, they aren't planning campaigns.
>>
>>98476668
This is a very nogames response. You play enough different systems and you start to realize how much they're all the same. Whether a game is more roleplay or procedure focused doesn't really change the way you talk about actually sitting down at a fucking table with other human beings and playing a real fucking game.
>>
>>98476509
Yes, /tg/ gets rejects from /lit/, /his/, and even /x/ (like the guy who keeps yapping about proper definition of magic).
>>
>>98476692
>I've yet to see a single instance of this ever happening.
The guy who made notAntioch talked comprehensively about his setting AND how the players interact with it, it's quite nice to see.
>>
>>98475689
>There are all sorts of valid reasons someone might not literally, actually play games
Then stop commenting on them like you do, nogames.
It's glaringly obvious when people who just read PDFs of RPG rules and board game rules without actually playing them talk about games. They assume extreme edge cases are common occurrences, even then they get the rules wrong 90% of the time, and get OBSESSED with probability statistics and charts to try and prove their point and when it is shown IRL sessions don't follow the chart they made they consider IRL sessions to be anomalous in nature or some shit.
>>
>>98475689
I think people on this board use the insult to describe different kinds of people. There was a post about it here that got screen shotted, but I don't have it.
I use it to describe people who complain about how they imagine others playing games or woke ruining games because people who play games would realize that none of that will affect their games.
>>
>>98476692
you dont see it from me because i've long since given up on /tg/ as a roleplaying community (and if i hadnt i would use the amateur homebrew thread)
>>
>>98475689
>there are all sorts of valid reasons someone might not literally, actually play games.
Could you name these reasons?
>>
>>98476857
>/tg/ as a roleplaying community (and if i hadnt i would use the amateur homebrew thread)

genuinely: try Gaia Online?

for me, in actualplayedgames, it's
>i kick in the door and search for treasure. i got a 12.
and never
>"forsooth!" i exclaim, gesturing towards the door, my face agape, "R'yzon the Wise, how shall we advance beyond the portal before us? force, perhaps...?"

i feel like /tg/ skewed a certain way, the same way the site does as a whole. Lowtax hated animu in general, moot wanted an animu community that wasn't "^___^ kawaii~ desu ne...! o_O;; xD"
>>
>>98476731
And that's the key difference between the puckspam type of threads and someone who is actually trying to discuss something: They can actually talk in depth about the topic they started.
>>
>>98476659
How is it that me, an 68 year old great-grandpa, is more modern that you? Are you playing games you like with people you actually know? Being in the same room as the rest of the group isn't real gaming if they're random losers you met at the comic shop. If you're not playing with real friends and family, it's not real gaming.
>>
>>98475689
No, I will not validate these friendless losers, these insufferable misanthropes invading my hobby. Fuck you, fuck them, get a life and touch grass you subhumans.
>>
>none of you are playing real d&d unless you play it the way i do.
>>
>>98476995
How the fuck is that your interpretation of this thread? Are you illiterate, or just so butthurt at the possibility of someone calling out your ignorance of the hobby that you jumped to that conclusion to pre-emptively defend your fragile ego?
>>
>>98476995
if you aren't following the Procedure of Play (which accounts for some on-the-fly changes) you aren't playing the game. there are rules. waiving them is not playing D&D.
>>
>>98475689
>t. nogames
>>
So do you post this stuff on every board or is it an independently arising phenomena? Forget the frogposting faggots, but it seems like I can click damn near any board and see this exact post with a slightly different post and image sometimes. Are you an idrama faggot or a regular autistic faggot who taught himself how to sound less autistic by watching my japanese animes?
>>
>>98477500
wdym? it's a thread about tradgames, how would this work on another board...?
>>
>>98475689
The purpose of insults is to hurt, dumbass. Insults are not meant to be accurate description of the person you are insulting. They are meant to elicit the maximum emotional response from them, and "nogames" makes the nogames seethe because they want to play but they got nogames because they are an insufferable person who nobody wants to have at their games, and deep down they know this.
>>
>>98477512
It's a thread about wrongthink and therefore belongs in tumblr.
>>
Instead of bitching about being called a nogames, you can quite simply make an effort to learn about RPGs and ask /tg/ about the hobbies they enjoy. If some retard is losing an internet argument and starts screaming "nogames nogames nogames!" then, yeah, quite obviously ignore that faggot. But if the only thing you ever contribute to /tg/ is vapid, pointless threads about what color Orc poop should be, maybe reconsider what it is you think you are even accomplishing here.
>>
>>98477734
not OP or defending his stupid rename but I will say that while accuracy isn't mandatory all the best insults have at least some level of truth/accuracy to them since insults that have nothing to do with reality are much more easily brushed off as being nonsense said by idiots
>>
>>98475769
>>98475770
Isn't that the point? That the people who contribute nothing are the ones who come up with ideas that nobody gives a fuck about or are incompatible with actual play.
Everything they do is theorycrafting about a hobby that they don't actually participate in. They break down whenever they're asked about how their 'cool idea' would actually be implemented in practice.
>>
>>98475769
Kek spbp
>>
If theorygamers are so smart how come they've got nogames.

Why don't their theories model, mitigate and hypothesise testable solutions for getting more games?
>>
>>98485725
They could theoretically get into solo play, or even theoretically read some fucking books just to have some kind of general understanding of mechanics, but that would all require that they stop being boring, lazy ideas guys.
>>
>>98485746
I don't believe in solo play.
>>
>>98485725
it is a game unto itself
>>
>>98485874
It doesn't believe in you either.
>>
>>98476675
>decide to run a system
>watch some movies and read some books in the genre to get in the zone
>make lore details up on the fly during sessions
>always have a fun time with the lads
Any time I see a motherfucker "world building" I know for a fact that fartbreathing faggot does not run games
>>
>>98475689
absolutely not you nogames faggot, its an insult intentionally
>>
>>98488221
Everyone I know who gets the odd, stray idea for something they could put in a campaign simply writes that idea down for later, and then revisits it when they have a chance to use it. They don't come running to /tg/ and then make a thread like
>Should all wizards be homosexuals?
>Tell me about all female gnoll rape gangs in your setting
>what does your party think about barefoot loli vampire farm girls using necromancy for good?
>>
File: Mass animate object.png (104 KB, 1351x486)
104 KB PNG
I just don't get why it's so bad to discuss things in a settings/systems agnostic sort of way. Maybe I want to hear some ideas or hear your stories on how good or badly said idea went when it was put in your game. Or hear some general theorycrafting stuff like "Oh X system has something for this, try porting it with these changes."

/tg/ used to be great for getting homebrew ideas and tables. Now it's just people screaming at each other that they don't play games or they already have a general and ruining any chance of discussion.
>>
>>98492693
Because those threads are never oriented that way. "In my game I'm trying to do something like [x], and the situation is [y]," or "I'm interested in these things for these reasons, does anyone have any stories of that working or not working in a game"

It's always shit like
>What material of robe do wizards wear in your setting

Usually with a stupid picture. It does nothing to try and start an actual conversation, it's just vomiting out nonsense.
>>
>>98492693
The kind of threads /tg/ would sometimes shitpost into decent discussions were the exception that proved the rule. /tg/ used to move fast enough that if a thread wasn't being relentlessly bumped, it would fall off the board in a couple of hours. It also helped that the majority of people on /tg/ knew something about at least one or more games.

This system agnostic shit you're trying to jazz up is nothing of the sort. The nogames threads being shit on here are quite plainly pointless. They're not about sharing stories. They're not about workshopping ideas. They're not about theorycrafting. They're not asking for advice, feedback, insight, or review. They're just pointless bullshit made by people who think vaguely gesturing at elves and orcs and culture war shit is the same thing as making a post about traditional games.
>>
>>98492693
Frankly, the majority of people who make those threads now just ask the question and never engage ever. Usually comes with an ai generated pic too. More people will take you for trying to make a sincere attempt at discussion if you provide your own thoughts and-or examples to give something to discuss, but not all.
>>
>>98475769
Lots of autistic players delve into rules without actually playing. Had a friend who had a very strong opinion about tactics and army list design in 40k without having ever played a game.
>>
>>98492741
Your friend sounds like he at least knew enough to talk about the game in mechanical terms and unit selection. He may be entirely wrong on all points, but that's still leagues ahead of the average nogames shit we see on /tg/ these days.
>>
>>98492693
>and ruining any chance of discussion.
There is no fucking discussion to ruin. 'What colour and flavour are elf buttholes in your setting' doesn't create anything worth talking about. Nobody in those threads replies to anyone else. People saw the pointlessness of these threads and stopped replying.
>>
>>98492708
It's truly that simple. Nearly every one of these fucking worthless waste of space threads could be formatted and presented in a way that provokes actual discussion and engagement, but whoever keeps making them, bots, mods, or mod-protected subhuman shitstains, seems incapable of even feigning interest in spurring legitimate conversation about anything. It's genuinely not that hard to frame any of these things as something from a game, for a game, or that happened during a game, but they don't even try.

So, with no real fucking reason for why they can't just frame their bullshit in a constructive way, what are we left to assume? That they're just retarded? Probably not, because that's too easy. A retard would have gotten bored by now, receiving the same dozen replies and total disinterest in their threads, followed by having to desperately bump every one the second they get to page 10. So the only thing we can reasonably assume is that these people are being antagonistic and malicious, as no other reason properly explains a dedicated, multi-years-long campaign of spamming pointless bullshit.
>>
>>98492741
>Had a friend who had a very strong opinion about tactics and army list design in 40k without having ever played a game.
Any game? At all? No?
Then he had no clue what he was talking about. He wasn't autistic either he was just a run of the mill dumbfuck narcissist, those people love to run their mouths about shit they've never even tried to engage with.
>>
>>98492693
The best way to talk on this website is to aggressively call everyone a useless fuckwit if they're not engaging with your posts and never bother replying to just trolls.

I've made a few threads where I was polite, specific, and careful in explaining the topic and what I wanted to discuss and the replies I got were useless because the average /tg/ denizen is a subhuman moron.
Now I just make short as fuck OPs with a barely relevant image. 1% of the effort but it makes people engage.

If you don't like this, you're fucking retarded and part of your own problem.
>>
>>98494366
If you call people saying
>kill yourself
>blow it out your ass
>this looks like shit!
over and over as the kind of engagement you want, I guess you're technically right. Stale b8 does get people to post, but it doesn't do much for making this place any better or restoring any sort of meaningful discussion.
>>
>>98494412
Nah, I get good replies that engage with my OPs. You're just retarded and unlikable.
>>
>>98494415
Welp, here's the (You) that (You) wanted, I guess.
>>
>>98494415

>>98494426
>Seething that nobody engages with his OPs
Sucks to suck.
>>
>>98494346
That's my point, all of his arguments and ideas were pure theory with no experience. It's no different than someone whose never played DnD talking about but talking about builds as though he's an expert.
