Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

>What's your favorite random table?

Too many to list but if there was a gun to my head and I had to pick one I would pick Welcome to Corpathium as the main body table with various subtables for creating a game world.

Practical tables vary by the campaign. The stuff in Garden of Ynn has been good for the current one. A nice collection of procedural generation that isn't too cludgy to use at the table, mood and stats.

Wandering Monster tables on a 2d6 curve have served me well.

DMG Appendix A Table V. F.
I can make everything from there if I have to.
>>
>>98483704
>Welcome to Corpathium
Really? Not to be antagonistic, but that table on its own doesn't seem to have enough meat on it to be a top tier usable table to me. Something like The Nocturnal Table has a siilar vibe but much more beef on the bones.

Not antagonistic, I get you. Its not a set of tables with anything mechanical and I like The Nocturnal Table too. Its a weird TQ because of the breadth of work random tables cover for OSR games so I went with a top down, mid range and immediate use.

I found Welcome To Corpathium great for making the world, I've never had problems finding modules or making adventures to fit into things after that part and the initial inspirational groundwork was extensive enough I can use it constantly. Have for a few one-shots, a campaign, a skirmish wargame for a bit.

Oh yeah, I think I actually misread you now that I look again. That makes sense now.

I really like Appendix D myself. Often slept on, but good.

Bro hostility ITT has been way down ever since Fishfag (who was causing almost all of it) got decisively chucked, what are you talking about? All there is now is one guy who replies with unreasonable salt to any rules question and he's extremely easily ignored. I've started making index cards with monster stats for easy reference/so it's easy to rearrange the space behind the screen.
I think I'm going to start using index cards for everything... Magic items and spells that get handed out... Even to replace some tables.
What's the weather? *shuffle weather deck and draw*
What monster was encountered? *shuffle monster deck and draw. Stats are right there*

I'm telling myself it's useful but I think I might be going crazy

No, Saltanon, I often reply to the same people you do but with explanations and without seething about it.

Also, last thread proved you aren't so shit-hot on the rules yourself all the time so maybe a bit more humility and friendliness would be in order.

I like using index cards as PC character sheets.

But yeah, they're also great for new monsters and magic items.
>>
>>98485014
That was me, not him, and not knowing the details of a specific item in one of the three editions used here is not even remotely the same as not knowing the rules.

"Learn the game before you start homebrewing" was never a controversial opinion before
>>

I also think it's a good idea to learn the game before you start homebrewing, but that doesn't mean I expect nobody to ask a rules question in here ever.

Well, yeah, that's the difference between us and saltanon.
>>

Recovering index card addict.
I share your excitement but also your insight that it is a thing you're telling yourself.
>magic items
Good initially. Feels cool to hand out, players get excited, you can doodle on it. But eventually players get cluttered with too many over time and either switch to writing them down or fuck about with the cards and lose them and forget.
>spells that get handed out
See above. I wanted players to use them like spell cards from whfb or mtg but it never came together that way.
>replacing tables
Fun to do as a writing exercise and novelty but eventually found making tables with 2-3 lines per entry tops was more effective at the table.
>weather
See above. You could make a weather deck with probabilities mapped out for which sorts of weather was more prevalent and then adjust the deck by season. Or you could use a table and probabilities.
I made entire encounter and wilderness decks, a few dungeons with a room per card but I have over time curtailed my use of them for everything and mostly use them for NPCs and henchmen.
Not saying don't do it. Its neat and made me a lot better at writing shorthand and getting out of other styles of play but I've come to appreciating 2 notebooks with some indexing more and more over time.
Easier to store too, having index cards for the empty rooms was clunky but not having cards and having the details in a book or on a table defeated the point and was too obvious about the room contents being less important.

what's up with you FAGs spamming the Open OSR thread again?
I thought we had a more or less working truce?
sure no one can guarantee there wouldn't be some retard or even an outsider troll looking to pick a fight, but it worked overall

Is the T series fine as is or is there some changes you guys would recommend or alternate versions (like changing the end of GDQ with DF16 etc)

What "truce"? His not-a-general thread was down to talking about 4th ed Dark Sun in its quest to explore the one true OSR, and was so empty that Fishfag came over here spamming the last /osrg with his usual schizo garbage. However, the current activity in his hijack thread is due to him trying to cite the Simulacrum blog as something that backs him up, then the blog author updating it just to tell him by name to fuck off, after which there's been about 12 hours of nonstop furious backpedalling and cope that has been too funny to resist baiting him over.
>>
>>98485574
The article still lists g&g as a faithful retro clone, and it still describes the OSR as being fundamentally about TSR-era D&D, so I don’t know what either of you is on about. It says that 2e is OSR.

T1 is a good starter module, but T1-4 is unfortunately underwhelming. Mentzer's dungeon isn't particularly compelling. Even something like Barrowmaze would probably be a more enjoyable play experience to get the PCs up to levels where they can engage with G1.

A general for any "OSR" will always have people preaching arguing about mutually exclusive systems and interpretations of OSR. If everyone stopped talking about classic D&D in your thread, you would have the same inflammatory purity spiral but for GURPS or Runequest or some shit within 5 posts.
>>
>>98486791
>inflammatory purity spiral
TOUT TOUT!
>>
>>98486791
Why can't there just be a "Classic D&D" thread for people who want to post about that, and an "OSR" thread for people who also want to post about new games in the same spirit. That would be much easier to understand and everyone would get what they want
>>
>>98486833
Because the Old School Renaissance General represents a community that's older than your ideas of OSR. We shouldn't have to change our name just because itchio and reddit disagree with us.
>>
>>98486833
>That would be much easier to understand and everyone would get what they want
Except everyone who actually posts in this general, you mean?

Anyway, Anon is right; there's no reason why the actual OSR should give up the moniker to your personal misunderstanding of the OSR is, and then get shoved into a "classic D&D" thread that you would presumably include 2e in anyway. There's every reason that you should just learn properly what old-school means instead.
>>
>>98485286
This is a nice sober take
>>
>>98486833
nta blog post sorry.
That's been tried.
/tsrg/ or /2ndg/ or /todd/ don't have enough legs because the people making them didn't play enough of the actual games to maintain posting. Its just stuff like
>I liked this TSR era setting
and a few questions and that's about it.
/nusrg/ didn't work either because there's not enough cohesion between things like Mothership and Carin and Best Left Burried and Death In Space and UVG to do much more than
>has anyone played this cool looking thing?
and crickets. Doesn't help there that the creative energy of a lot of NUSR material is primarily focused on the art side so the gameplay tends to be quite shallow. There might be room for discussions of rulings but that would again require enough people who actually play to engage.
Some of the real problem is thinking it needs a general at all desu. Sometimes a fellow will get the urge in their gonads to talk about Birthright or Spell Jammer or something and they can make a thread about it. Happens from time to time but overall has trailed off, there will be some Darksuns posting for a bit because of the wotc remake. That's okay. Not everything needs to be a general.
/osrg/ had, note the past tense, a fairly lively pace of creative input and discussion for a while, got big and crashed out as the scene fragmented and covid happened. Then we lost pdfs. which had been on the decline for years anyway at that point. Its still got some charm and cool shit sometimes and its better than the alternatives but the trolling and excessive metaposting doesn't help either. There is enough commonality that gameplay and rules discussions still happen. At least with a more cohesive reference point fags can get into discussion about fire damage. It would be easy enough for the more persistent trolls to pass if they put any effort into it but they're more interested in tearing things down than talking about games.
>tldr
Be the change you want to see. Play games. Post about them.
>>
>>98486912
What do you mean by PDFs?
>>
>>98487454
This site used to allow PDF attachments with an 8-meg limit, until it was realized that the admins hadn't updated their security since Abacus 2.0 and people used a malformed PDF to compromise the site. The response was to disable the ability to attach them here, which hasn't been restored; it's not clear if it will ever be. It's put a severe cramp on the creative homebrews people used to make, in this thread and others.

what do you consider the most important gameplay principles of OSR? here are the ones i thought of

>Gold as XP
XP primarily comes from treasure you manage to take back to town. You aren't here to kill everything, you're armed robbers here to steal the prize gemstones and escape alive.
>Reaction rolls
Things need to sometimes fight, sometimes negotiate, and sometimes help. This adds strategic depth to the game.
>Morale rolls
It's ridiculous for the 10th orc to keep fighting when his 9 comrades just got wiped by a fireball. This adds tactical depth to combat and makes it faster.
>Time pressure
You will run out of torches, and there are more monsters than you can handle. This incentivizes careful planning and forces you to make calls.
>Evasion/chase rules
Movement rates should be considered but so should tactics and distance between parties when encountered. This allows for survival when facing superior odds.
>Wandering monsters/random events
Some are positive or neutral, but most will be negative. This provides a resource drain (HP, spells, etc.) that forces strategic decisions about when to press on and when to head home.
>Combat as war
Combat needs to be high lethality for both you and the monsters. Everybody is in it to win it, and playing fair is for chumps. Sharp, deadly combat makes for a situation where neither you nor the monsters are expecting to get killed, and thus diplomacy is a good option most of the time!
>>
>>98484478
No, you're just not as much of an oldfag as you think you are.
>>
>>98487647
Meaningful choices in terms of exploration. The different routs in the dungeon need to be descriptive in ways the players can engage with and decisions about where to go and how they go about it have to have effects on how the game plays rather than a linear path though a static set piece.
>>
>>98487811
Fuck that's actually really important. Can't believe I forgot that one.

For those of you who play OD&D regularly; what is it about the game that makes you prefer it over things like AD&D or B/X?
I'm an AD&D guy, but lately I've been enjoying reading through some OD&D material and becoming more familiar with Chainmail. There's something about the LBBs that I find enticing. Curious to know what others see in it.

I like Chainmail's combat better than D&D's. Especially because magic weapons and armor become much more powerful.

This one for sure. So retro and rarely useful, but still cool.
>>
>>98488037
For me it's three things: number one, the amount of loose ends requiring interpretation to finish the game forces you to make it your own and for me at least, really drives creativity; a "fruitful void" type of thing. Number two, like Anon I'm really fond of Chainmail-derived combat (and again, deciding exactly how to implement it in-game is an interesting exericse). Thirdly, some of the rules are just genuinely better than any other edition, like the hexcrawling procedure or the little rule about throwing things to distract pursuers.

Another benefit that isn't so important to me personally but which is objectively good is that in spite of OD&D's simplicity it has almost total direct compatibility with AD&D (if you're familiar with OD&D you can see that many AD&D rules are just the elaborate or deconstructed version of an OD&D rule) so you can add all your preferred selections of the AD&D rules very easily. For me personally, if I wanted "standard" D&D I'd just run AD&D, but I know that other referees are less interested in the creative/interpretive aspect and for them this is a big plus.

Flaming swords exist in more than one edition, actually.
AD&D has flametongue. And damage caused by fire has been relevant since trolls have existed.
Spells to resist cold, fire, and to protect from lightning are also in AD&D. The spells specifically affect the amount of damage received by attacks of the given form, ie elemental damage, ie fire damage, cold damage, or electricity damage.

Just admit you don't actually know the game as well as you thought, and you are too autistic to handle shorthand language. It's fine, but you don't get to keep acting superior without facing ridicule for it.

>party split up during a fight
>the enemy hobgoblins retreated in good order in 2 separate directions into a large central room.
>both groups need to bash down the doors to get in
>north group bashes in the door in the first try and meets well organized resistance that badly wounds a PC and knocks out a henchman
>southern group with my top guy on point just needs to roll a 10 to break open the door
>fails for 2 rounds
>tired of waiting the enemy reserve opens the door and everyone stacked up in the room gets hit by fan of flames
>no one dies and the door is being held by a guy in plate with a +1 shield and the hobgoblins need 18s or 19s to hit
>2 of the 3 roll 19s and he goes down to big polearm hits
>send in the wardogs who should make quick work of hobgoblins
>they cant roll above 7 to hit
>have to get bailed out of this mess by the assassin shooting the hobgoblin mage in the back from the opposite side of the room
It really sucks when your dice go cold. 25 level 3ish PCs and their henchmen should have rolled over 35 hobgoblins. Thankfully for the people who went down there are no permanent injuries just weeks in hospital needed. Which would normally have me mad about wasting time but our elf leveled up too and needs time to learn new spells anyway.
But we split the party and mostly got away with it.

It ties into how the mapper operates as a player activity that informs a lot of the other key points you hit. The map doesn't have to be a 10' square accurate recreation, although some groups like to play it that way and if they can that's neat.
Having the map gives the players a better vantage point to consider strategic planning for this delve or future expeditions as well as tactical options for their current situation. They can see how far in they are, how long that took, where they want to go, etc. It feeds into all the things you listed really well.
From a gameplay example it means they can see roughly where they think they are in relation to the rest of the world, what their resources are and figure out if going through the tunnel with slowly falling glowing dust is a risk they want to sort out now or if they want to follow the wind noises to the south, or go back and try something else.
The DM creation of the dungeon and description of it to players has to inform them so they can use that information to ask questions and best guesses based on the information. Doesn't have to be, and often works better it isn't, full information, but the map and exploration choices are a big part of what ties together a lot of cool things about osr play.

Stop acting like an expert about a specific game, and telling people to read the books, if you don't even know the relevant rules in the game you are claiming to be an expert on.

You must be really bad at describing your rooms if it takes this much extra time to describe how many exits and where.

Also, if you're going to play online, you some type of whiteboard where you can show them a rough estimate of the room, and then get rid of it so the mapper has to record it himself
>>
>>98490176

>war is hell
I like it. I get the personal frustration with when the dice seem to fall in ways they
>shouldn't
but that's what the dice are for in risky and violent operations like fighting a bunch of organized violent monsters in a tunnel.
Taking out the mage is key, they fail morale at that point?

My session was mostly exploration and planning. Party went for trying to explore the tunnel with slowly falling glowing dust. At least they tied a rope around the scout, his idea smart scout, so they could haul his unconscious ass back out.
They're figuring out how to get though the hall, its short 20' long 5' sleep area, no doors. They went back to town and we stopped there.

Kinda, most of the guards at the entrance to the lair fought a delaying action while a few fell back to raise the alarm. Once we cornered them in the central area they didn't really have anywhere to run that didn't lead back to where the party already was or a magically locked door. Nice.
I am tempted to commit shirk and write artifact qualities into the blanks on mine. Its not likely different versions are going to come up much.

Too civilized. I write in most of my other books as needed, something about this one stops me. Its worth getting over. Its not a mint copy or anything like that and it has a previous owner's notes in it anyway.

i really like when gary says "dice" as a verb, as is "dice (roll) on the following table"
so...quiant

nta, holy shit i remember this post. did gary really invent this meme?

>did gary really invent this meme?
I don't think so, using dice as a verb is much older than that.
>>
>>98490111

In the words of Jerry Reed: when you're hot you're hot, and when you're not you're not.

ACKS?

If you're not rolling a 20 sided die for initiative, you aren't playing osr.

What about them caught your interest?
Have you read them yet?
Do you like mass combat?

Are you silly? I use this thing all the time. If a player fails his save against Fireball, do you think that his equipment doesn't have a chance of immolating?
I bet you don't even roll to see if your party's thrown pints of oil break on impact.
>>
>>98493834
nta
I'm not rolling that for everything in someone's inventory let alone for everyone in the blast radius' inventory.
Nice little dood though.

Thanks. He was my first attempt at FDM minis. I think he turned out well enough. Here's the mini I use for my friend's Druid, who has become quite the force in this campaign, equipped with Boots of Levitation and Staff of the Serpent.

Fwiw, I don't think it's practical to roll for every item every time, but I will roll for certain items that could be especially prone to damage in the situation at hand, or if they are holding something particularly valuable or fragile.

Unrelated: is there anywhere I could get my hands on a collection of the OD&D LBBs and supplements in an easily printed collection like with the B/X Omnibus? I stapled my own A5 booklet for Chainmail, but don't have the others.

>>98493923
It's only for magic items, and only for those who die from the fireball.
Ffs why are people so afraid of just playing the game?
