Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help: >n00b DM's Guidehttps://pastebin.com/EVvt6P0B>n00b Player's Handbookhttps://pastebin.com/XALkXkV0 >Troves, Resources, Blogs, etc:http://pastebin.com/9fzM6128 >Need a starter dungeon? Here's a curated collection:https://archive.4plebs.org/tg/thread/94994969/#95006768 >Previous thread:>>98435873>Thread Question:What's your favorite random table?
>>98483580>What's your favorite random table?Too many to list but if there was a gun to my head and I had to pick one I would pick Welcome to Corpathium as the main body table with various subtables for creating a game world. Practical tables vary by the campaign. The stuff in Garden of Ynn has been good for the current one. A nice collection of procedural generation that isn't too cludgy to use at the table, mood and stats. Wandering Monster tables on a 2d6 curve have served me well. DMG Appendix A Table V. F. I can make everything from there if I have to.
>>98483704>Welcome to CorpathiumReally? Not to be antagonistic, but that table on its own doesn't seem to have enough meat on it to be a top tier usable table to me. Something like The Nocturnal Table has a siilar vibe but much more beef on the bones.
hard to find inspiration or enjoyment in these threads anymore. endless trolling and the hostility has really reached a new level
>>98484463>the hostility has really reached a new levelI say this with all due love and respect anon, but are you sure you're not wearing rose-colored glasses, or perhaps just becoming a weak-kneed faggot as you get older?
>>98483963Not antagonistic, I get you. Its not a set of tables with anything mechanical and I like The Nocturnal Table too. Its a weird TQ because of the breadth of work random tables cover for OSR games so I went with a top down, mid range and immediate use. I found Welcome To Corpathium great for making the world, I've never had problems finding modules or making adventures to fit into things after that part and the initial inspirational groundwork was extensive enough I can use it constantly. Have for a few one-shots, a campaign, a skirmish wargame for a bit.
>>98484541>Its a weird TQ because of the breadth of work random tables cover for OSR games so I went with a top down, mid range and immediate use. I found Welcome To Corpathium great for making the worldOh yeah, I think I actually misread you now that I look again. That makes sense now.I really like Appendix D myself. Often slept on, but good.>>98484463Bro hostility ITT has been way down ever since Fishfag (who was causing almost all of it) got decisively chucked, what are you talking about? All there is now is one guy who replies with unreasonable salt to any rules question and he's extremely easily ignored. I don't like him either, but if you think that's bad, /v/ would rip the skin right off your bones.
>>98484594>im too dumb to know the rules, so im being bullied!lol
I've started making index cards with monster stats for easy reference/so it's easy to rearrange the space behind the screen.I think I'm going to start using index cards for everything... Magic items and spells that get handed out... Even to replace some tables. What's the weather? *shuffle weather deck and draw*What monster was encountered? *shuffle monster deck and draw. Stats are right there*I'm telling myself it's useful but I think I might be going crazy
>>98484985I use a index card stack that has rings for flipping. I prep my sessions with them
>>98484976No, Saltanon, I often reply to the same people you do but with explanations and without seething about it.Also, last thread proved you aren't so shit-hot on the rules yourself all the time so maybe a bit more humility and friendliness would be in order.
>>98484985I like using index cards as PC character sheets. But yeah, they're also great for new monsters and magic items.
>>98485014That was me, not him, and not knowing the details of a specific item in one of the three editions used here is not even remotely the same as not knowing the rules. "Learn the game before you start homebrewing" was never a controversial opinion before
>>98485032I also think it's a good idea to learn the game before you start homebrewing, but that doesn't mean I expect nobody to ask a rules question in here ever.
>>98485056>that doesn't mean I expect nobody to ask a rules question in here ever.Well, yeah, that's the difference between us and saltanon.
>>98484985Recovering index card addict. I share your excitement but also your insight that it is a thing you're telling yourself. >magic items Good initially. Feels cool to hand out, players get excited, you can doodle on it. But eventually players get cluttered with too many over time and either switch to writing them down or fuck about with the cards and lose them and forget.>spells that get handed out See above. I wanted players to use them like spell cards from whfb or mtg but it never came together that way. >replacing tables Fun to do as a writing exercise and novelty but eventually found making tables with 2-3 lines per entry tops was more effective at the table. >weather See above. You could make a weather deck with probabilities mapped out for which sorts of weather was more prevalent and then adjust the deck by season. Or you could use a table and probabilities. I made entire encounter and wilderness decks, a few dungeons with a room per card but I have over time curtailed my use of them for everything and mostly use them for NPCs and henchmen. Not saying don't do it. Its neat and made me a lot better at writing shorthand and getting out of other styles of play but I've come to appreciating 2 notebooks with some indexing more and more over time. Easier to store too, having index cards for the empty rooms was clunky but not having cards and having the details in a book or on a table defeated the point and was too obvious about the room contents being less important.
what's up with you FAGs spamming the Open OSR thread again?I thought we had a more or less working truce?sure no one can guarantee there wouldn't be some retard or even an outsider troll looking to pick a fight, but it worked overall
planning on running AD&D's T1-4 and then maybe GDQ1-7Is the T series fine as is or is there some changes you guys would recommend or alternate versions (like changing the end of GDQ with DF16 etc)
>>98485501What "truce"? His not-a-general thread was down to talking about 4th ed Dark Sun in its quest to explore the one true OSR, and was so empty that Fishfag came over here spamming the last /osrg with his usual schizo garbage. However, the current activity in his hijack thread is due to him trying to cite the Simulacrum blog as something that backs him up, then the blog author updating it just to tell him by name to fuck off, after which there's been about 12 hours of nonstop furious backpedalling and cope that has been too funny to resist baiting him over.
>>98485574The article still lists g&g as a faithful retro clone, and it still describes the OSR as being fundamentally about TSR-era D&D, so I don’t know what either of you is on about. It says that 2e is OSR.
>>98485897>You are personally told by the author you cited to fuck off (retard) because you're wrong>Nuh-uh, death of the author means I'm rightDeath of the (you) is a far superior answer at this point in proceedings
>>98485032>is not even remotely the same as not knowing the rulesdespite the post of "its not in BX, youre wrong!"stop acting like a know-it-all faggot
>>98485501suck my shit, fishfag
>>98485032>i dont know BX, but ill cry as an expert!!!
>>98485879>[deleted[suck my shit. fishfag
>>98485501The truce is with the real thread, not your thread that stole the name and just seethes about /osrg/ all the time.>>98485523T1 is a good starter module, but T1-4 is unfortunately underwhelming. Mentzer's dungeon isn't particularly compelling. Even something like Barrowmaze would probably be a more enjoyable play experience to get the PCs up to levels where they can engage with G1.
>>98485501>Make a thread where the OP is basically "Those subhuman chudoids of the /osrg/ kicked me out because they're a bunch of retards who don't know I'm right. Fuckers drew a cock on the moon with their Nazi space laser or so I heard">Get upset when other people tell you to stop being a cunt.K
>>98486514Seems like you're the one crying
>>98485501A general for any "OSR" will always have people preaching arguing about mutually exclusive systems and interpretations of OSR. If everyone stopped talking about classic D&D in your thread, you would have the same inflammatory purity spiral but for GURPS or Runequest or some shit within 5 posts.
>>98486791>inflammatory purity spiralTOUT TOUT!
>>98486791Why can't there just be a "Classic D&D" thread for people who want to post about that, and an "OSR" thread for people who also want to post about new games in the same spirit. That would be much easier to understand and everyone would get what they want
>>98486833Because the Old School Renaissance General represents a community that's older than your ideas of OSR. We shouldn't have to change our name just because itchio and reddit disagree with us.
>>98486833>That would be much easier to understand and everyone would get what they wantExcept everyone who actually posts in this general, you mean? Anyway, Anon is right; there's no reason why the actual OSR should give up the moniker to your personal misunderstanding of the OSR is, and then get shoved into a "classic D&D" thread that you would presumably include 2e in anyway. There's every reason that you should just learn properly what old-school means instead.
>>98485286This is a nice sober take
>>98486833nta blog post sorry. That's been tried. /tsrg/ or /2ndg/ or /todd/ don't have enough legs because the people making them didn't play enough of the actual games to maintain posting. Its just stuff like >I liked this TSR era setting and a few questions and that's about it. /nusrg/ didn't work either because there's not enough cohesion between things like Mothership and Carin and Best Left Burried and Death In Space and UVG to do much more than >has anyone played this cool looking thing? and crickets. Doesn't help there that the creative energy of a lot of NUSR material is primarily focused on the art side so the gameplay tends to be quite shallow. There might be room for discussions of rulings but that would again require enough people who actually play to engage. Some of the real problem is thinking it needs a general at all desu. Sometimes a fellow will get the urge in their gonads to talk about Birthright or Spell Jammer or something and they can make a thread about it. Happens from time to time but overall has trailed off, there will be some Darksuns posting for a bit because of the wotc remake. That's okay. Not everything needs to be a general. /osrg/ had, note the past tense, a fairly lively pace of creative input and discussion for a while, got big and crashed out as the scene fragmented and covid happened. Then we lost pdfs. which had been on the decline for years anyway at that point. Its still got some charm and cool shit sometimes and its better than the alternatives but the trolling and excessive metaposting doesn't help either. There is enough commonality that gameplay and rules discussions still happen. At least with a more cohesive reference point fags can get into discussion about fire damage. It would be easy enough for the more persistent trolls to pass if they put any effort into it but they're more interested in tearing things down than talking about games. >tldrBe the change you want to see. Play games. Post about them.
>>98486912What do you mean by PDFs?
>>98487454This site used to allow PDF attachments with an 8-meg limit, until it was realized that the admins hadn't updated their security since Abacus 2.0 and people used a malformed PDF to compromise the site. The response was to disable the ability to attach them here, which hasn't been restored; it's not clear if it will ever be. It's put a severe cramp on the creative homebrews people used to make, in this thread and others.
>>98487454>What do you mean by PDFs?Summer is real.
what do you consider the most important gameplay principles of OSR? here are the ones i thought of>Gold as XPXP primarily comes from treasure you manage to take back to town. You aren't here to kill everything, you're armed robbers here to steal the prize gemstones and escape alive.>Reaction rollsThings need to sometimes fight, sometimes negotiate, and sometimes help. This adds strategic depth to the game.>Morale rollsIt's ridiculous for the 10th orc to keep fighting when his 9 comrades just got wiped by a fireball. This adds tactical depth to combat and makes it faster.>Time pressureYou will run out of torches, and there are more monsters than you can handle. This incentivizes careful planning and forces you to make calls.>Evasion/chase rulesMovement rates should be considered but so should tactics and distance between parties when encountered. This allows for survival when facing superior odds.>Wandering monsters/random eventsSome are positive or neutral, but most will be negative. This provides a resource drain (HP, spells, etc.) that forces strategic decisions about when to press on and when to head home.>Combat as warCombat needs to be high lethality for both you and the monsters. Everybody is in it to win it, and playing fair is for chumps. Sharp, deadly combat makes for a situation where neither you nor the monsters are expecting to get killed, and thus diplomacy is a good option most of the time!
>>98484478No, you're just not as much of an oldfag as you think you are.
>>98487647Meaningful choices in terms of exploration. The different routs in the dungeon need to be descriptive in ways the players can engage with and decisions about where to go and how they go about it have to have effects on how the game plays rather than a linear path though a static set piece.
>>98487811Fuck that's actually really important. Can't believe I forgot that one.
For those of you who play OD&D regularly; what is it about the game that makes you prefer it over things like AD&D or B/X?I'm an AD&D guy, but lately I've been enjoying reading through some OD&D material and becoming more familiar with Chainmail. There's something about the LBBs that I find enticing. Curious to know what others see in it.
>>98488037I like Chainmail's combat better than D&D's. Especially because magic weapons and armor become much more powerful.
>>98485014>Also, last thread proved you aren't so shit-hot on the rules yourself all the timeWhere's that, retard? Sounds like made&up delusions.
>>98485032Stop acting like a know it all expert telling other people to "read the books", of you don't even know the rules of the game youre talking about. And stop fucking hiding and doing cope gymnastics.
>>98488289>don't even know the rulesWhy are you turning yourself retarded in pursuit of a trivial "own" on a Panamanian glassblowing circular?
>>98488373>Claims to be an expert >Tells others to read the books>But doesn't know shitKWABOTYYes, you got "owned". Now go read your DMG.
>>98488375It was literally an item in one edition, why are you pretending that "know the rules" requires "memorize every single item in all three editions or admit you don't know anything?" You're literally fucking retarded right now, and I can't take your shit seriously.
Could anon please send the picture of Bob the Fighter vs modern player backstory?
>>98488383>literally an item in one editionyeah but it exposed a pretty fundamental gap in your understanding of the gamet. nta
>>98483580>Thread Question:>What's your favorite random table? This one for sure. So retro and rarely useful, but still cool.
>>98488037For me it's three things: number one, the amount of loose ends requiring interpretation to finish the game forces you to make it your own and for me at least, really drives creativity; a "fruitful void" type of thing. Number two, like Anon I'm really fond of Chainmail-derived combat (and again, deciding exactly how to implement it in-game is an interesting exericse). Thirdly, some of the rules are just genuinely better than any other edition, like the hexcrawling procedure or the little rule about throwing things to distract pursuers.Another benefit that isn't so important to me personally but which is objectively good is that in spite of OD&D's simplicity it has almost total direct compatibility with AD&D (if you're familiar with OD&D you can see that many AD&D rules are just the elaborate or deconstructed version of an OD&D rule) so you can add all your preferred selections of the AD&D rules very easily. For me personally, if I wanted "standard" D&D I'd just run AD&D, but I know that other referees are less interested in the creative/interpretive aspect and for them this is a big plus.
>>98488540I gotchu fampai.
>>98488383Flaming swords exist in more than one edition, actually.AD&D has flametongue. And damage caused by fire has been relevant since trolls have existed.Spells to resist cold, fire, and to protect from lightning are also in AD&D. The spells specifically affect the amount of damage received by attacks of the given form, ie elemental damage, ie fire damage, cold damage, or electricity damage.Just admit you don't actually know the game as well as you thought, and you are too autistic to handle shorthand language. It's fine, but you don't get to keep acting superior without facing ridicule for it.
>party split up during a fight>the enemy hobgoblins retreated in good order in 2 separate directions into a large central room.>both groups need to bash down the doors to get in>north group bashes in the door in the first try and meets well organized resistance that badly wounds a PC and knocks out a henchman >southern group with my top guy on point just needs to roll a 10 to break open the door>fails for 2 rounds >tired of waiting the enemy reserve opens the door and everyone stacked up in the room gets hit by fan of flames>no one dies and the door is being held by a guy in plate with a +1 shield and the hobgoblins need 18s or 19s to hit>2 of the 3 roll 19s and he goes down to big polearm hits>send in the wardogs who should make quick work of hobgoblins >they cant roll above 7 to hit >have to get bailed out of this mess by the assassin shooting the hobgoblin mage in the back from the opposite side of the room It really sucks when your dice go cold. 25 level 3ish PCs and their henchmen should have rolled over 35 hobgoblins. Thankfully for the people who went down there are no permanent injuries just weeks in hospital needed. Which would normally have me mad about wasting time but our elf leveled up too and needs time to learn new spells anyway. But we split the party and mostly got away with it.
>>98487938It ties into how the mapper operates as a player activity that informs a lot of the other key points you hit. The map doesn't have to be a 10' square accurate recreation, although some groups like to play it that way and if they can that's neat. Having the map gives the players a better vantage point to consider strategic planning for this delve or future expeditions as well as tactical options for their current situation. They can see how far in they are, how long that took, where they want to go, etc. It feeds into all the things you listed really well. From a gameplay example it means they can see roughly where they think they are in relation to the rest of the world, what their resources are and figure out if going through the tunnel with slowly falling glowing dust is a risk they want to sort out now or if they want to follow the wind noises to the south, or go back and try something else. The DM creation of the dungeon and description of it to players has to inform them so they can use that information to ask questions and best guesses based on the information. Doesn't have to be, and often works better it isn't, full information, but the map and exploration choices are a big part of what ties together a lot of cool things about osr play.
>>98490132While fine for in person play I find this eats a good chunk of time playing online and I absolutely hate that it seems to take something away from the description of a room when I have to follow up with asking about how many other exits there are and where are they.
>>98488383Stop acting like an expert about a specific game, and telling people to read the books, if you don't even know the relevant rules in the game you are claiming to be an expert on. I'm sorry that such a simple concept is elusive to you, but you have literally lost all respect that people could measurably have for any of your posts.
>>984890681. The word is saving, not savig. 2. "It's so retro and not very useful!"God, idiots like you are just insufferable here
>>98490164You must be really bad at describing your rooms if it takes this much extra time to describe how many exits and where. Also, if you're going to play online, you some type of whiteboard where you can show them a rough estimate of the room, and then get rid of it so the mapper has to record it himself
>>98490176Indeed, the word is "saving", yet my keyboard broke two days ago, specifically the key "n" seems to not work half the time. Probably because of all the times I wrote NIGGER.Anyways, why the forced hatepost?I get it, your general is gay and dying, but you don't need to bump this one and make a fool out of yourself.
>>98490111>war is hell I like it. I get the personal frustration with when the dice seem to fall in ways they >shouldn't but that's what the dice are for in risky and violent operations like fighting a bunch of organized violent monsters in a tunnel. Taking out the mage is key, they fail morale at that point? My session was mostly exploration and planning. Party went for trying to explore the tunnel with slowly falling glowing dust. At least they tied a rope around the scout, his idea smart scout, so they could haul his unconscious ass back out. They're figuring out how to get though the hall, its short 20' long 5' sleep area, no doors. They went back to town and we stopped there.
>>98490164>online play I can't do that one. Really misses out on the parts I like. Tried it once, noticed a similar difficulty with mapping but likely there would be some sort of online whiteboard the group could easily use. >asking more questions is taking away from the description I don't follow this part at all. Asking questions adds to description.

>>98490478Glad its going well. Focus on that instead of whatever slapwar you think you're fighting with the other guy. >>98490217>morale Kinda, most of the guards at the entrance to the lair fought a delaying action while a few fell back to raise the alarm. Once we cornered them in the central area they didn't really have anywhere to run that didn't lead back to where the party already was or a magically locked door. Unfortunately Lulu changed its CMS or something so that all URLs were changed and I have no idea how to find it in the new format, as it was unlisted and couldn't be searched. If you can figure out how to convert the URL though, post the new one ITT. We tried to post it as little as possible to avoid it getting taken down, but in a case like that it would be justified.

>TQ Can't pinpoint a single one, but they all keep the game interesting and make sure that I as a referee also don't know what will happen next. Anyways, it's ya boi the B/X newfag with some questions regarding our next session (#40)Once again the players will participate in a battle involving ~120 lawful dwarves and halflings on their side vs. ~250 chaotic dwarves including some goblin riders and young dragons. I've tried a few mass combat rules over the course of the campaign and came to find that certain systems work best for specific scales applied. At that scale I'm torn between using Chainmail vs. just doing the 10:1 scale. Which one would you FAGs prefer? And while pondering this, I've also wondered: What do you think about B/X combat RAW with the small change that instead of having both sides resolve their whole round in initiative order, they take turns each phase of the round kinda like in many mass combat rules? Thanks for your continuous support to make me a proper Old-School FAG and sorry for the retarded ESL vibes in my posts, it's my autistic German mind trying to butcher English sentences.
>>98495140>Which one would you FAGs preferSup, FAG. Brutal scaling (10:1) is okay, remember that not all battles are en masse. It's okay to have 10 squads of 25, with 4 in the center, and two on each flank, over a very large area. The PCs will be fighting their own "encounter", and you should let them pick which part of the map they want to start the battle in. You can play the whole thing out in abstract, but let the party zoom in to their level
>>98495001Are you actually retarded? It's a joke about "more" and "less", same as how Mike Mornard called his M-U character Lessnard.

>>98485032>"Learn the game before you start homebrewing" was never a controversial opinion beforeHomebrewing is literally the point of all RPGs and especially the old ones. "Learning the game" is overrated since a good DM will change literally every aspect of the game anyway. This has always been so. People who use any material without altering it have no imagination.

>>98500505I think after years of fucking about, taking the time to slow down, read and play the game as written for a bit before messing with it tends to reveal a lot more than you'd think. The ones who are changing a lot before playing it or otherwise not understanding what they're changing tend to be full of themselves like you are and the changes they make tend to be bad. Post your home brew.
>>98500773I'm not mad. I think it's funny and stupid, and ultimately a complete waste of space.Lots of oldschool RPGs had the problem of trying to have a chart for everything, and all those charts would wind up just being distractions sincer any DM worth his salt would just make up a ruling on the fly and move on.
>>98500584I like it. Not going to use it all the time, I'm tempted to see if I could crunch the numbers to 1:6 instead of saves because for some reason saves for inanimate objects doesn't work as well for my autism and somewhat conflicts with the idea that saves are about the source rather than the receiver. It was a good example of a shortcut >oh hey this would be cool for a material scarce game with breaking primitive weapons >oh wait that would be mostly annoying after a short time
Knowing the odds of something breaking creates faster and deeper play.
>>98500879>Does anyone have good resources on Chrisitanity in the roman persecution period, or other literally underground historical religions?Ooof, where to even begin? Yes, there are tons of good resources on this including lives of saints etc. (for D&D purposes, the stories of miracles and such are sometimes even more useful than straight history) and the works of Eusebius of Caesarea. There isn't just one one easy book to rec though; ultimately it really depends on what kind of source you prefer, e.g. the novel Quo Vadis is a classic treatment of the period in fiction, and there are absolute shit-tons of pop history books about early Roman Christianity.>>98500894I agree totally but I'm pretty sure you're replying to a troll.

Most of that has moved on as they're generally fad chasing and the creative ttrpg scene is a barrel scraping contest on itch.io at this point, but they might have a point if their homebrew is anygood or at least interesting to look at.If I'm being charitable I think a lot of people on the >just make everything up its what eveyone does anyway miss going through the steps as being important for informing rulings. They probably read rules as kids, got some of it wrong and played figuring it out and adding as they went, which is good, but miss that other people coming in asking questions haven't done that yet so talking about rules, tables and resources helps those people get to a better capacity to improvise. I ran ravenloft but players are spending waaay too much time there, they are scared to do shit, I wanna just push them towards the conclusion and move them somewhere completely new for a fresh start. Whether with new characters if they die to strahd or not. But they've been avoiding ravenloft like the plague, convinced there is some hidden solution to get out of the mist or som hidden secret hack to weaken strahd. They basically ignored the card reading and we've just been stuck doing nothing for a few sessions. Any ideas how I can do this?

Just spent way too long building a spreadsheet so I can have 6 B/X PCs at a glance, and then longer still to fiddle with ability scores & buy gear.I figured running a party though Stonehell might be an interesting & entertaining way of restocking the dungeon and keeping the setting alive in my mind while the game is on hiatus.I was finally ready to start playing, but then I wasn't sure how exactly to proceed. Could anyone reccomend a useful set of dice oracle/tables that might cover different situations?Any other advice for soloing?

I want to include scantly clad barbarian men and women to my games, but I don't want to step away from just using the four traditional classes. Do I have to just let Barbarians be fighters with leather/no armor and Really bulky thieves? Or is there some other alternative that allows for two different subsets of fighter warriors?
>>98510171You can just describe chain mail armour as chain bikini or a coif that still displays rippling abs. Change plate mail to panoply and you're set. You can reskin the armour how ever you'd like. Or do you mean you want to add some sort of barbarian rage thing?
>>98510191>add some sort of barbarian rage thing?Nope. Your solution is great, actually.I don't really like Rage. I think it's sort of gay. A barbarian rages whenever he battles, not as some stupid activated ability that triggers like a special attack. The only issue I see with reskinning armor is that I do also want full plate to be a thing...
>>98510171Mail and leather equivalents
>>98510211Could just call them >light >medium >heavy and describe the detail more depending on context. Or could go AD&D, swap Splint/Banded for Panoply and keep Plate.

>>98505960I like a lot of the solo play stuff from a game called Kal-Arath. Worth taking a look at it for some of the Oracle tables alone. It's also a neat little system but outside of the scope of this thread. You could ask Grok to make rulings or narrate stuff for you. I've had fun having Grok run B/X adventures for me.A good basic oracle system is using two dice of different color, one for Yes and one for No. Roll them together, higher score wins and the difference between the two indicates the degree of your answer, ranging from things like "Yes, and..." to "No, but..."
I have a question about henchmen. So, I can basically have between 2 and 7 henchmen per character, depending on my Charisma. What happens if I have my current maximum and then something happens in-game where I acquire another one?For example: Early on, I hire a couple dudes to follow me into dungeons and slowly over time their loyalty to me raises and they get a level or two. Later on I find more henchmen through questing and hiring people that have similar goals to me and over time their loyalty also grows to a point where I don't really have to worry about my henchmen running away from reasonable challenges...Well, what happens then if I rescue a trapped warrior from a cage in an orc's lair, and he would be willing to work as a sellsword for me? Do I just not get any more guys?
>>98510488I would treat him as a special case and allow you to go over your normal limit. You'd be unable to recruit anyone until you either gained charisma somehow or lost a couple of henchmen. I might pick out your lowest loyalty henchman once a month and have him roll morale to see if he decides to bugger off due to being crowded out, but I'd give him, say, a +2 on it as long as he's still being paid and treated well.
>>98510488I should say that by the book, your DM should not have the guy offer to become a henchman if you're already at your limit. But if he does anyway, for whatever reasons, then see above.
>>98510488>Well, what happens then if I rescue a trapped warrior from a cage in an orc's lair, and he would be willing to work as a sellsword for me?He would be willing to work for you *except* he's put off by the size of your existing retinue. (Personally, I would rule that you couldn't even hire him if you fired an existing henchman, since treating your men thus cavalierly is a bad sign to prospective recruits. Trying would certainly also damage the loyalty of the existing henchmen.)
>>98510396>Hey Sven, where should we put these lizardman bodies? >Oh I don't know, maybe that altar I guess.>The evil one? In the temple of theirs? >Yeah, should be fine.
>>98510488>Do I just not get any more guys? This. You have to make a choice as a player who your character is putting effort into managing. The rescue or the swapped out henchman might stick around town or stay in contact, might be able to hire them as a hireling for less hand on duty and get ahold of them later, but having a henchman is like having an apprentice. There's a lot of communication, time, resources, trust and effort put into it so the charisma limits are a good representation of how capable of that sort of soft skills the character is. After a certain point everyone tops out on that. >>98511525>Personally, I would rule that you couldn't even hire him if you fired an existing henchman, since treating your men thus cavalierly is a bad sign to prospective recruits. Trying would certainly also damage the loyalty of the existing henchmen. This is a good call. Might be worth it sometimes but the henchman you allow the privilege to seek other employment opportunities becoming their own free agent, perhaps starting a rival adventuring group, etc. are all reasonable things that can follow from player actions and make the game world more interesting.

>>98513048Wives, concubines and harem slaves per default are treated as normal hirelings and do not count against the henchmen limit, having a variable base morale score depending on their status. Their monthly upkeep isn't solely influenced by their level but also their social status, education and upbringing: You can imagine noblewomen being quite fiddly in the sense that they need to be provided far more than a lowly barmaid sidechick. The instances where I would count them against henchmen limit is if the player decides to make it so, either by taking them to dungeons, giving them active part of a domain's governance or appointing them as commanders.
>>98513048>If I wanted to implement such a rule, what should it be?Simply use the Judges Guild "Women" rules.

>>98513090A henchman doesn't have to go into the dungeon with you. A henchman is however willing to do so. Being a henchman means an implicit high level of trust and autonomy to follow both the letter and the spirit of your orders. Hiring a henchman just to stay at home and handle your affairs, while you pay them much more than they would make working such a job normally, is not an unusual thing
>>98514216Nta but in the context of the discussion, is a wife per default therefore a henchwoman? While I understand your point IMO in order for a wife (or more) to apply they need to be substantially involved in the character's affairs: Ruling the castle/state, doing ventures, even commanding troops.
>>98514216>A henchman doesn't have to go into the dungeon with you.I never said they did! (Hence "or whatever") The point that my question was getting at was "what are your waifus doing that means you need to treat them as hired henchmen?" A henchman is more than just an NPC who lays around your house and maybe you bang them one in a while. That's more akin to a retainer. It's all moot now anyway, the guy I was asking about it already cleared up his thinking on the matter.
>>98514416One of them is your head of household running your affairs while you are off adventuring, as I said. That includes wrangling the rest of the harem. The fighter Lord in my current campaign hired a henchman who rarely goes adventuring with us, she is almost exclusively just there to be a loyal and competent captain of our army
>>98514263Should have included you in my reply, please see my post above. Hope this clears any confusion and that I did not come across like an asshole
>>98514424>One of them is your head of household running your affairs while you are off adventuring, as I said. She's not really a concubine anymore at that point IMO
>>98514449Please provide the definition of a concubine and how it contradicts what I said.
>>98514570Bitches for Thulsa Doom, ie not a wife, and without the social and legal powers that a wife commands.
>>98514424Yeah that makes sense and aligns with what I said earlier: To be a henchwoman a wife or concubine needs a substantial stake on household governance. Sidechicks could be generally treated as hirelings or retainers, and I like that other anon's idea of each requiring specialized staff like maidservants (tho that IMO should just be included in the monthly upkeep).>>98514655I don't think the actual legal status is important at all but rather what the bitch in question does. They could legally be a concubine and yet have the mechanical weight of a true henchman.
>>98514741>I don't think the actual legal status is important at all but rather what the bitch in question does. They could legally be a concubine and yet have the mechanical weight of a true henchman.Sure, I'm just saying a concubine that does that is not really staying in her lane. She'd be exceptional, not what you'd expect. At that point you should probably marry her so her kids stand to inherit.
>>98514769Yeah but that's ultimately on the player's hands. At best what you can do is for the concubine in question to start pressing the PC to be made an actual wife/henchwoman, with appropiate morale penalties for not being treated according to her station.
>>98514785In the end, I think it all comes down to what the player asks the NPC to do. If it feels like henchman (-woman) duty, then you treat it as a recruitment attempt, subject to negotiations and CHA limitations and stuff.
>>98514655Your arbitrary and retarded headcanon is irrelevant lmao. I'm not sure why you are so put off by the concept of having a henchman that you fuck that takes care of your household and doesn't go adventuring?

>>98512182Idk were the anime waifus are, if you know tell me, but the campaign is fun.
>looks at blogroll for first time in a while Horryshit Hill Cantons is posting again. >looks inside >finno korean hyperborean image posting Neat. Stuff is far more gonzo than I tend to do but glad they're back at it.
>>98521281I would say SVoZ and LotFP both diverge heavily enough from their games of origin to be more than "a few carefully considered changes". They're both good games, and they're recognizable as extensive mods on their original games. However, SVoZ moves pretty far from LBB in the same way that LotFP moves pretty far from B/X.
>>98522223Sure, that's fair. Ultimately it's a subjective assessment how far is "far". My sense is that both are pretty modest in terms of the actual mechanical changes they make, and neither really alters the fundamental gameplay loop. (LotFP modules are another matter, although many of those also rely on the assumed gameplay loop for a sort of ludic irony.)
>>98499884He does but it hasn't been updated in 5 years.
>OSRfags will look you dead in the eye and say that this is fun
>>98522938NTAYRT>My sense is that both are pretty modest in terms of the actual mechanical changes they make,I like LotFP but I think the Fighter being the only class to get attack progression is notable enough its a significant change. Some of that is because attack progression in B/X is in general flat but everyone getting the bonus can make for a different enough approach to combat its worth noting. That's before we get into LOTFP module play intentions compared to a more standard dungeon crawl. Skill system feels nice. Its enough of a change again, worth noting but I think overall positive, but has little to no impact on the gameplay loop or style other than making it easier to do. Unless you're full FKR disembodied voice behind the filing cabinet.

>>98524046Pardon my ignorance, is ACKS considered OSR?

NVNTIO VOBIS GAVDIVM MAGNVM: HABEBIMVS LIBRVM MELANISMelan's Gamemaster’s Guidelines: Announcement and Previewhttps://beyondfomalhaut.blogspot.com/2026/08/news-gamemasters-guidelines.html
>>98526082Aw, shit yeah!
>>98526082YES! I was so waiting for this.
>>98526082Only skimmed the preview but the overlay of a Melan diagram on a dungeon map is curious.I don't exactly need another dmg but might get this one. The explanations and tone so far seem all together far too reasonable.
>>98526082>Melan gets delayed for a year crafting this book>still managed to announce it, write it and publish it during the wait for the LotFP Referee Book
>>98526268We are never going to see that one. It would be a funny thing to survey lotfp fans and see how many started after it was announced. They likely don't even know. Its been 13 years. Memory holed. Melan might still be fucked, depending on what happens with PPWR and small businesses.
>>98526251>the overlay of a Melan diagram on a dungeon map is curiousWhat's confusing you about it? Maybe we can explain it. (If it's the upper right, I can already tell you that the loop there is reduced to that right-angle bend because the diagram is supposed to be as linearly simple as possible, not just follow the layout exactly.)>>98526288>It would be a funny thing to survey lotfp fans and see how many started after it was announced. They likely don't even know. Its been 13 years.Kek, good point.>Melan might still be fucked, depending on what happens with PPWR and small businesses.Eh, I think he'll be fine. He's Hungarian, Eastern Europeans have lots of experience with disregarding onerous bureaucracy to get shit done.
>>98526569Not confusing, just doesn't note a few divergent dead ends like room 11, 23/24, 29, 32. It would probably look quite messy if they did. The diagram still gets across the overall layout.
>>98526762>just doesn't note a few divergent dead endsOh, yeah, Melan diagrams don't do that, they're just supposed to indicate the points of meaningful choice of directions. That way, taken together those points show the structure of the dungeon as an environment of play.

>>98526082>In such cases, it isappropriate to place some kind of warning sign toindicate this – for example, someone who unsus-pectingly tries to search a chamber containing nu-merous bone fragments should not be surprisedwhen a 16-ton stone block falls on him. kek going to be some gems in this one art's good too
>>98523373No, this is when we call you a crybaby.
>>98522197Reading blogs is my favourite part of the OSR.I haven't ever played an edition before 3.5, I just admire the philosophy.
>>98535501>I haven't ever played an edition before 3.5Well, get in there, anon! The Gygax/Arneson era of D&D is great!
>>98535501I can understand that. It's strange but neither 3.x nor 5e seem to produce the same quality of third- or often even first-party content even though both are much bigger scenes. I just reread>https://themansegaming.blogspot.com/2018/10/50-terrible-knowledges.htmland I sincerely think it's better, more gameable content than anything in Curse of Strahd, despite just being a really weird, niche table.
>>98532374Why did this get deleted?
>>98536237I guess jannies thought the first "that's not an osrg statblock" post was trolling or something, and just pruned the whole reply chain? Seems a bit much
>>98536239Better than them just leaving shitposts around tb h. Way too harsh moderation is worse than way too lax, but a little bit too harsh is better than a little bit too forgiving.
>>98536267Its just talking about stat blocks. They must have had actually no idea what they were looking at. Two of fish's not!generals got deleted too. Have considered how much effect having a more contemporary stat bonus distribution could offset some of the fairly common concern about power levels. I don't think its a big deal but a more generous bonus setup could help players feel better because noomber.
>>98536351>a more contemporary stat bonus distribution could offset some of the fairly common concern about power levelsIt's the other way around, too large bonuses exacerbate power level issues. In 3e for example you can easily end up with a party where some members are completely fucked because they didn't know how to opt their scores or rolled bad.
>>98536944I wasn't thinking of the distance between PCs power level, which is an interesting point. I've noticed that be more of a problem the more I use roll-under-stat so I try and not do that so much. I more meant having there be an easier way to get +1 for the extra hit, damage and hp that are not an uncommon note about low level osr play. I don't think its much of a problem personally but I do think having that extra something helps players out psychologically. The main problem is >12-14+1>15-16+2>17-18+3 is not as pleasing but >12-13+1>14-15+2>15-17+3>18+4is over-correcting or making a +4 for something that's already quite good.
>>98537779Well, maybe it's a matter of taste. For my part, I prefer the LBB style. 15+ score nets a bonus of +1. +1 is basically the most you get out of any single level (+2 every other level technically), so having the difference between an average and top-tier stat correspond to four levels feels iffy to me now that I'm accustomed to OD&D.
I think gargoyles should be lawful creatures, the guardians of temples and holy places against the forces of chaos.
>>98533267Lmao these dumbfucks deleted my post where I called them out. How are you going to issue me a 30-day ban, for a post that was almost 3 weeks old? And then you get butthurt and delete the post calling it out, and issue me a "warning" for it?Eat shit
>>98538047Have them be oriented around a series of commands and directives given to them by whoever made them. 3 rules for fairly simple gargoyles they have to obey in order of priority, although clever ones made by a chaotic will try and distort or twist the wording where as lawful ones will obey perhaps to their own detriment. >Protect the altar at all costs.>Allow bearers of the True Sign safe use. >Clean up after yourselves.
>>98537779>I've noticed that be more of a problem the more I use roll-under-stat so I try and not do that so much.Roll-under makes stats matter more than 3.5 does. 17 strength is not supposed to be 75% of 18 strength. It was a midwit duct tape fix that Moldvay would have thought better of including if he knew dimwits would use it more than once every couple of sessions.
>>98538047Gargoyles being evil originates in a specific Clark Ashton Smith story:>http://www.eldritchdark.com/writings/short-stories/121/the-maker-of-gargoyles
>>98538943I see how the curve on 3d6 weights so the 18 is much less common than the 17, but I think people find the numbers themselves being on a different scale to be difficult to reconcile with them being sequentially the same. I have for sure cut back on>default to roll under stat and have tried to do more X:6 with a minor adjustment for context if necessary but can usually build that into the roll.
>>98538943Yeah, roll-under gained in popularity because it's easy conceptually and in practice, not because it's even remotely a good basis for universal task resolution in a system like D&D.
Hey, what's a good (and free) program or website to try to craft a dungeon?
>>98541369Dungeon Scrawl is free to use
>>98538943>17 strength is not supposed to be 75% of 18 strength.Explain this statement. How is 17 accidentally 75% of 18 on a d20 roll-under? I'm sure I'm just being a midwit but idgi.
>>98542127NTA, but the bonuses anon was talking about are +3 for 15-17, +4 for 18, and of course, +3 is 75% of +4
>>98541369This one's a bit weird but I like it. I'm lazy so rarely do I make a dungeon whole cloth. Saves me time to get one about right and add a few passages or rooms. https://davesmapper.com/
I've removed the cleric. Have you ever removed a class from the game?
>>98542790I've run Fighting Man and Magic User only. I think I prefer it that way but at that point I'm doing strange things like custom spell lists and letting everyone read scrolls. The flexibility of clerics being able to chose from a full list is a notable feature and messing with that can limit player options. What have you done about Turn Undead?
>>98543137>What have you done about Turn Undead?I made it into a 1st-level spell. It's slightly stronger (instead of relying on a special roll, it forces undead to make a spell saving throw; if they fail, they are turned, and if the wizard is 6th level, it automatically dispels undead from the original table's first row, if 7th level, from the second row, and so on).
>>98542223Oh, I see. But roll-under doesn't use those bonuses, so I'm still confused.
>>98543383Yeah I think that was supposed to be an aside? The guy he was replying to was mostly talking about the bonuses, but mentioned roll-under-stat too
>>98543258I went with the roll table on B8 modified by the caster's level but I think your way would have been better.
Wanna laugh? The OSE Demonic Grimoire's crowdfunding campaign is being (mis)handled by Exalted Funeral, and it's a shitshow. Necrotic Gnome said the PDFs were already completed during the campaign, and Exalted Funeral said they'd have the surveys out by the end of July. Since then, they've been ignoring backer complaints, replying with boilerplate nonsense, or promising updates "in a couple of days" that never materialise.Cherry on top: Backers were promised to get the PDFs to the 2026 OSE update, which again were already complete during the campaign, as the surveys went out. Which already doesn't make any fucking sense, why not send them separately? Exalted Funeral said they're unable to do it. Lolwut? So Necrotic Gnome has had enough and independently published the 2026 OSE update on DTRPG for free for those who had bought an earlier version of OSE.So non-backers got those PDFs before backers did.So thaks to BT WE got the updates before the backers did; they're in the Usual Places.LMAO it's all on Backerkit if you're curious
>>98547036IS it in the usual places? Not seeing it in the ose folder on the main archive or on NV.
>>98547712Look again. It's in a dedicated folder inside the OSE folder of the OSR archive
>>98547036This seems weird. Exalted Funeral has been around for quite a while and is well established. Why would something this seemingly straightforward have fucked them up? This is not a particularly complex kickstarter with a lot of moving parts, and it's not their first time handling this sort of thing.
>>98547036EF fucking it up isn't surprising. Their entire brand shifted hard into irony as marketing years ago and they haven't made anything I was interested since. But yeah, its a bad sign when the people who made the product take distribution away from who they hired to do it. There have been a few osr kickstarters I have backed but its a shifty scene.
>>98548721 #All of their recent campaigns were delivered with delays of months.https://www.reddit.com/r/osr/comments/1vrujfi/exalted_funeral_has_to_get_their_shit_together/They have a fantastic array of excuses ranging from>I was replying to comments, but my messages were not being shown, and I did not notice!through>b-but this is a complex campaign, so it's normal that it takes months longer than anticipated to complete the backer surveyall the way to the evergreen>the reason all of our campaigns are months late and we don't bother to give proper updates to backers is Trump
>>98526268Still waiting for the Bryce adventure design book.
>>98548809Looking at how other forums discussion goes is always fascinating. EF's damage control is bad but looks like it will work fine given the amount of >oh that's just how kickstarters and backer projects go you have to understand small starving company and a number of people pointing out other companies manage just fine without fucking it up, but that gets ignored.
>>98548948Yeah EF wouldn't overpromise so systematically if they didn't know the average backer to be a total sucker. From this point of view they're right to lie and fuck them in the ass if that's the optimal strategy.
>>98484478When I was new to these threads I was posting about Ben Milton games and nobody was having a tantrum.
>>98549401I think it varied a lot based on how it was brought up. The years of rules-light shilling have made it harder for people to engage with it earnestly and its easy bait for shitters. There have been a few wave of oddly entitled posting in the last 5+ years about things that I think came across poorly when reacting to criticism or suggestions and hasn't really gotten better if the current 2 generals and a not general are any indication.
>>98549520Yeah, how you bring it up makes a difference, but years of shitposting campaigns to try to topic-slide the thread have resulted in many people being less tolerant of that kind of stuff than they were before. But at the same time, any search of the archives will show people telling those posters to fuck off, going aaaall the way back.
>>98549635>any search of the archives will show people telling those posters to fuck off, going aaaall the way back. Its all over the place. Sometimes things like DCC would get told to fuck off sometimes pdfs of conversions and dungeons would get posted. I think in general the internet and social media has become significantly more hostile over time and everyone has become a lot more defensive, suspicious and cagey alongside that. The osr scene had a huge blowout with the zakenning and the resulting cancel or be cancelled phase of the artsy side which has been amusing to watch but also killed a lot of the low level constant interest in making cool shit and helping people out with that. Its been encouraging to see blogging pickup a bit again but its a different cultural landscape for sure.
>>98549751>pdfs of conversions and dungeonsEffort posts /always/ got more leeway than no-effort posts.
>>98549761Sometimes they did, sometimes they didn't. It was all over the place. I think a more clear definition helps people understand what to play, how to mix ideas and create content but no one has been doing that on /osrg/ for years. Even before pdf is kill there had been less and less posted on a monthly basis in directly inverse proportion to poster count.
>>98549911>no one
>>98549927Do you want to start the big hullaballoo by mentioning a certain play report, or shall I?
>>98549968I'm just saying that guy's starting to sound like a dishonest demoralization poster, >implying that all the folks who have posted cool stuff the past few years don't exist, all in order to push his narrative. Whether he'd be the guy to flip his shit about that play report or not is up in the air, I suppose.

>>98550001No problem with play reports but they're by no shape or means anything like the dungeons and tables before that. I'm sorry discussing numbers is demoralizing for you. This isn't to say there wasn't any, but it was in steep decline since /osrg/ got over 50 unique posters per thread. That was years ago.Way to prove the point about everyone being so traumatized they can't even say what they mean anymore. Fishfag Sifahfag Fiashfag. Its not going to summon satan.
>>98550166>they can't even say what they mean anymoreI just figured everybody already knows who we're talking about.>discussing numbersNumbers you made up on the spot. There's been a general decline, sure, but it's one that is mirrored by the whole of 4chan, and isn't necessarily anything to do with /osrg/ in particular. The rise of bot posting drove a lot of people away, and now that the mods have found ways to crack down on that by blocking certain domains, posts per day has plummeted across all boards.
