What happened in your last session?
>>
>>98487386
The party beat up the villain in his secret lair atop the space needle and destroyed his giant roller coaster transformer robot.
I'd like to give more details, but this was about 20 years ago.
>>
My last game sucked. I'll talk about one that I enjoyed.

>Mutants & masterminds 2e with friends
>session whofuckingknows of campaign, the PCs get captured
>next session is them in a super prison inside a volcano trying to escape that is also the big bad's base
>big bad wants to turn them to his side, and that's why they were kept alive
>one member of the team isn't there, an assassin turned good guy vigilante
>nullifier devices around their necks with bombs, so no super powers available
>they manage to escape their cells anyway thanks to the power armor hero guy's technical skills
>recover power armor guy's suit, and he disables the collars
>ohshititsonnow.exe
>during escape, vigilante guy turns up and attacks the physically weakest hero (telekinetic/telepath girl) just before the team gets on their jet
>arrangement had been made at start of campaign between me and assassin/vigilante that he would play a mole for the big bad
>this session would be his last because he was having to go out of town for several months for work
>that's why I captured the team the previous session
>his attack used a puts her on death's door while the team battles some recurring supe bad guys at the jet hangar, which is right over the caldera of the volcano
>assassin/vigilante gets knocked over the platform the jet is on, which is over the volcano's caldera
>battle goes team's way, and they make it on to the jet
>as they are leaving, telekinetic/telepath girl sees assassin/vigilante holding on to the side of some supports for the jet platform, and uses her telekinesis to throw him off to his death

I was gonna make an opening to bring the assassin/vigilante guy back if the game was still going when he got back from his work thing until she did that. Nobody saw it coming since they were supposed to be heroes. This started a heel turn for her, and she ended up killing 2 more bad guys later on in the campaign. Finally the player made a new character and I got her as an NPC.

had my players fight loki with bruce banner was accompanying them to provide tech support
while I expected them to pit the hulk against loki like the comics/MCU, I did not expect them to turn invoke the hulk by punching bruce in the face

they all decided to just run away from the hulk and leave him to cause property damage
which is probably the most realistic reaction to the hulk

superhero wargames are all about pre-existing characters because thats what 90% of the intersection between wargamers and comic fans would actually buy

OC superheroes are treated a bit more skeptically than OC warhammer characters
stuff like the red hulk beating up silver surfer creates way more seethe than xenos-of-the-week killing X terminators

on the topic of the guardsman armor

just an idea for a modern milslop inspired guardsman suit
>M1A1 guardsman powered exoskeleton, Enhanced Firepower, Survivability, and Force (EFSF) Package-1
>Composite Carbonadium armor panels on Upper and Lower Body, and Carbonadium Plate skirts provide additional passive protection
>add-on backpack energy storage to power kinetic force shield to protect against shaped charge projectiles and impact absorption from kinetic attacks (solid AP shot, the hulks fists) as well as to bring hand mounted repulsors up to the same standard as the Iron Man Armor (estimated power level)
>shoulder mounted 25mm cannon with independent swivel, reverse engineered from War Machine Power armor, capable of loading AP sub-caliber rounds for hardened targets and proximity-fuze HE rounds for defeating drones
>cannon is slaved to eye-mounted designator allowing the operator to fire at any target within visual range
>shoulder-mounted radar allows for spherical detection of moving targets and slaved to the central computer to allow for smart-targetting of all targets at any angle
>helmet mounted multi-spectrum sensors allow for thermal imaging, night vision, and up to horizon visual ranging
>additional arm mounted 5.56 machine gun to augment firepower against soft targets
>pauldron- mounted smoke projectors, creating a thermally opaque smoke screen that defeats all known methods if identification
>pauldron mounted APS-hardkill system to defeat projectiles or drones before impacting the shield to conserve power or armor integrity
>additional helmet-mounted antennae to boost comms range up to several kilometers and the ability to network with other guardsman amor
>tactical pouches for holding miscellaneous objects
>with all additional upgrades, it is now estimated that only 10 guardsmen are needed to subdue a threat equivalent to the crimson dynamo rather than 25

I don't have a gaming group where I am, so I am considering running some online games using startplaying to find players. They'll be free, of course. However, the question remains, what system do I run?

I am considering Prowlers & Paragons, Mutants & Masterminds, Marvel Multiverse, and Invincible. Which would be easiest to find players for?

ADDENDUM: I see a lot of people complain about Marvel Multiverse, saying the core dice mechanic is too random, but... Well, I wonder if they have ever read comics. They are full of instances of what games would call critical hits (Ultimate Fantastic rolls) and lower-power characters being able to meaningfully resist higher power characters with luck.

Am I looking at this wrong, or what?
>>
>>98518970
in the games I ran with marvel multiverse, the large number of crits arent a deal breaker

in practice, it just means you "fail forward" a lot
so if you set a TN to save a citizen from falling debris to a high level, such that they are almost certain to fail, but they still roll that fantastic on their roll
thats usually an opportunity to tell them "you shield the citizen with your body but take heavy damage"
though RAW would say that you should still fail at the task you just get a bonus out of it, IE you fail to save the citizen but the villain stops to gloat at your failure opening him up to an attack

a true critical success is actually fairly rare. since you need to roll double 6s plus the marvel face, which is a 1/6^3
>>
>>98518931
probably something like the old marvel superhero RPG
Marvel multiverse is simple to learn but very game-y
mutants and masterminds gives you great control over your character but char gen takes ages if you arent familiar
>>
>>98518970
You don't need a particular dice mechanic to represent randomness or luck. All dice mechanics are random by definition. You can represent consistency and flukes within a single rule system.

I'm not quite sure where to put it but could Kallen Kōzuki form Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, Transported to the main Marvel or DC continuity comic be a good street level hero with her superhuman capabilities and a costume?

>superhuman capabilities
She's just a very talented mech pilot and an okay field agent. If anything, it's her mech that was exceptional.
If they got a mech she could pilot, even a small one, she'd fit right in. A bigger question is how the hell do you keep a combat mech "street-level"?
"Street-level" would be better suited for Zero's other niggas, ones that weren't piloting.

Also, here's a fun idea for a game:
>a Lelouch expy with a mind-control power, complete with Black Knights that look like villains, but aren't
>they're waging a guerilla war against a corrupt government that doesn't look evil, but actually is
Bonus points if players only realize they were fighting for the bad guy halfway though the campaign and do the picrel.
>>
>>98544283
Kallen's above average to peak human but I doubt she's superhuman. Maybe you could get there if we count the amount of punishment she can take while piloting a knightmare frame but that's stretching it. There also might be something from the original manga that points towards that direction as well since it doesn't have knightmare frames but I've never finished it. Between Marvel and DC I'd go Marvel since you could pair her up with Stark and get a suit of armor. I remember reading a MHA/DxD fanfic that had some Code Geass stuff for some reason in it and Kallen's quirk was just the Wave Surger so if you wanted to go that route as well as sticking her in MHA that's also an option.

My flying brick got punched halfway across Europe by a ridiculous roll that the GM couldn't believe happened. After he slowly swam his way back to consciousness, he spent the rest of the fight flying back towards the battle, wouldn't have gotten back no matter what he did, so he stopped at some French village to buy lunch (literally nothing he could have done, complete BFR).

We ran it as a comedy skit where he only arrived AFTER the villains escaped with the UK Crown Jewels (because the swords are magical and one of the diamonds apparently has some sort of evil Hindu demon-god locked inside it), carrying a basket of baguettes, cheese, wine, and various French foods for the exhausted party.

Next time we go up, somebody needs to pick a teleport power.
>>
>>98547026
figuratively being punched off-panel is actually a funny way to remove a character from battle without outright killing them
>>
>>98547037
According to the GM, we were supposed to win and the next phase was investigative into what's in the Diamond. Instead we all got some of the worst rolls we've ever seen at the table, the thieves escaped, and now we all need to figure out where to go next to find said thieves. Who are a much more evil take on Lupin, Fujiko, Goemon, and Jigen.

I don't know, I really don't like most indie capeshit I read, and don't find the settings compelling. Or they're too artsy for me to enjoy them as a traditional superhero setting. Like, the Maxx is kinda interesting, but it's not a setting where I'd want to see more supers interacting with, if that makes sense.
Unironically the answer might be the Incredibles, but that feels like cheating since it's basically just Art Deco Marvel.

The main reason for pic related is that it answers superscience in a way that I like.
All schizo-tech and super-inventions are only understood by other people who's "power" is to invent and make stuff, and if not given regular maintenance by someone with that power, it breaks down.
The other reason are the weird powers, including the builders who usually have a certain thing they build and a certain way to do it.
>Blasto: Uses vats to grow weaponized hybrids made from plants, animals, and fungi.
>Tecton: Builds power-armor specialized in altering and manipulating the ground by striking it.
>Mannequin: Made "closed systems" that sustained life, like terrariums, bio-domes, virus incubators, etc. Turned his work on himself and sealed what pieces of himself he didn't cut away in a suit.
>>
>>98547026
>complete BFR
What does BFR mean?

>>98547963
Not that anon, but he could mean that the GM set these particular bad guys up as pushovers so that the PCs would win, kind of like Spider-man's Shocker, and that the dice just gave them an outcome nobody expected could happen. Sticking to that outcome and not railroading would mean that the GM is good, not bad.

>>98548135
You should try some superhero novels; not graphic novels, but actual books without pictures. Some of them are really good, like:
>Wearing the Cape series by Marion G. Harmon (good Catholic girl (19 I think) gets flying brick powers and joins world's premier superteam as THE flying brick's sidekick)
>The Pantheon Saga by C.C. Ekeke (Samoan high school boy living in California gets powers (superstrength, durability, and lower-grade superspeed) and tries to grow into actually being worthy of them)

So, I am considering making a superhero game that uses the very core mechanics of 5e, meaning the six attributes, the proficiency bonus, and levels (but using levels like power level works in Mutants & masterminds). The primary idea, the elevator pitch for it I guess, would be
>a superhero rpg based on mechanics everyone knows that does everything Mutants & Masterminds does without the autistic buildfaggotry

Would people play it, do you think? Some specific things I am going to do that do not work like M&M or 5e
>hit points instead of damage saves
>three saves instead of six, like we had in 3.x
>movement not based in 5 foot squares, but in spaces like the old FASERIP system in Marvel Super Heroes
>movement also given in miles per hour and kilometers per hour
>powers that take a lot of inspiration from how powers work in Prowlers & Paragons
>much less crunch than in Mutants & masterminds
I will tinker with the proficiency bonus as well
>probably power level / 2 for the actual bonus
>the ability to have 'weak' stats that get half the bonus rounded down
>strong stats that get double the bonus

The biggest point I want to move away from in current incarnations of M&M is the way powers like Nullify or Drain work in 2e, 3e, and seemingly 4e, where they reduce a power or ability by a number of power points equal to 2 times the nullify or drain rank. That is complete bullshit at the table, requiring looking up the cost of the thing being drained and then using arithmetic to work out how many ranks get stripped away. Exploding ass cancer for speed of play.

I want to go back to the 1e paradigm, where all powers are capped at the power level of the campaign, and a character's Nullify or Drain rank just subtracts from the rank of the target power. Not-Magneto has 15 ranks of Magnetic Control and Not-Rogue drains him with her rank 10 Drain power? he has 5 ranks left. No muss, no fuss.

You could just defeat them. You don't have to kill someone to remove them from a fight.

I am not the anon that posted the story. I am the anon that explained it to you, the bad GM.

A likely outcome and a particular desired outcome are not the same thing. Not knowing the difference is bad.

you are either good or you are bad
this does not mean that you cannot go from good to bad, but it does mean that you cant be only half-reformed and pretend to be better than a villain
you need to go all in
>>

Likely means you had a particular outcome in mind, which is bad. You lose.

Greyzone are things you often have to do to achieve the greater good. Like to kill a murderer to prevent more victims. But in the end it is just another murder.

What kind of schemes do your villains get up to? And what are some kinds of schemes that aren’t used as much as they should be?

murder is objectively bad, murdering a murderer is still murder and therefore bad

There's a newer one, but OP can find it himself if he has the time to triage his shitty undersupported General with random images instead of actually putting up any resources.

I'm not OP, and I have been posting images to bump the thread. I done so like 4 or 5 times now, because I dig superhero RPGs.

I can't draw and not much of an editor, see attached. So finding some hero art would be nice but not corporate characters

Either get yourself a drawfag, or become one yourself (a truly based choice). That, or do edits of someone else's stuff.
I genuinely think sloppa has been a good thing when it comes to character portraits and small stuff like that.
It's when you start to go big with it that it becomes a problem.
>>
>>98592354
I've done drawfag

How powerful do you prefer your PCs to be? And what do you do when you’re stuck on creating heroes and villains, especially powers-wise?
>>
>>98593097
Sometimes I ask the players what power level they prefer and set the game to that, and sometimes I set it in the pitch. I don't have a particular preference, I just pick whatever falicitates the game's premise.
>>
>>98593097
personally, the game is most fun when they have roughly the power-level of season 1 young justice

at that point, why not just play city of heroes?

I've working on a west marches style campaign for Marvel Multiverse that will feature Xenomorphs and Yautja as antagonists.

I think that's the thing that bugs me because I like a lot of solo rpgs in the form of video games but with tabletop the appeal is less the rpg and more the social part of doing something with friends. I think a good pen and paper solo rpg could be a valid and fun game but I'd feel like a loser moreso than if I booted up FF4 or something.

the upcoming DC RPG looks interesting
brainstorming some ideas to use when it comes out, but having the players take part in a crisis event sounds like an action packed opening
>>
Can we just brainstorm power ideas?
>>
>>98606707
I think having a strong opening can be really important for some players to feel more invested. The party meets in a tavern and gets a job is easier narratively but getting caught up in something exciting with reason to see it through has always helped drive my players more.

>>98607784
I am a very basic person and I like to just pick an element like electricity or ice and then limit it in some way like they can generate ice blocks but only around their own body. Trying to think of ways to use this power I think about making ice armor or something, but then that turns into ice fists or weapons, and from that I concept it into a cultural theme like vikings so they make iconic viking weapons and horn caps out of ice at will. Its not really that original but its a fun thought exercise.

Hey it's Dr. Destroyer.
I'm running a Champions game soon /tg/, wish me luck or don't I'm not your dad.
Feel free to pitch villains, I can build damn near anything in HERO.
>>
>>98606707
I always start my games with some sort of action scene. An attack, a hostage crisis, a chase, a heist, a natural disaster, a distress call, an alien seeking asylum, etc. Sometimes I'll ask each player to decide what cool shit they're doing at the start of the game.

If you want to ensure your game dies, start by going around the table and asking each player to introduce their character.
>>
Ran my first prowlers and paragons game last night. It was fun, got some rules wrong in regards to how mooks work and how armor works, but it didn't detract too much from the game and now I know for next week. Everyone was enjoying the system so far. They are in the middle of a fight with foot-clan style ninjas who are high on demon blood, attempting a situation to summon their demonic master into a hulk body.

They all made pretty wacky characters, it's interesting to see what kind of goofy shit even 100 point characters can get up to.
