This is a thread for the popular D&D setting Exandria. Why does that upset you so?

Citation needed, I’ve never heard of whatever this is

you must have been living under a rock, then.

Kay. So what’s the big deal with this thing then?
>>
>>98488773
its the setting of the first 3 campaigns of Critical Role, featured in 2 campaign books, 1 adventure and 5 seasons of animated TV shows.
>>
>>98488784
I don’t watch that crap. Is that the only draw?
>>
>>98488788
Yes, there is nothing inherently unique about the setting. Its Forgotten Realms for a newer generation that saw the setting grow and expand from day 1, instead of having to delve into 40 books released back when their dad was still in high school

Alright then.

It's cute that you thing Shitical Role fans care about worldbuilding or settings or anything like that. They're only there to watch their favorite blorbos act like faggots and do stupid shit on stream.
>>
I wanted to like this, because I usually enjoy fantasy settings modeled on later time periods then the typical medieval stuff, like Eberron or Arcanum, but I just couldn't get over how obnoxious the characters are.
>>
>>98488784
Completely honest opinion, I'm not going to shit on CR just to be 2kewl4school: it's your run of the mill kitchensink setting in which you can easily travel willy-nilly across "adventure biomes" (here's the big urban city setting, here's the desert, here's the cursed forest, here's the underground, here's the vaguely easter-european folk horror mountains, etc...) to fit whatever the GM fancies for the next stretch of their campagin. Mercer's strength lies in theatricality, not wordbuilding (and he's actively terrible at game design).

Also they're so terrified of stumbling into topics that the no-no-words brownie-point-posse of their fans might DeePLy pRObLemAtiC, that they have filed the teeth off of any meaningful cultural peculiarity or roughness of literally everything in the setting - see C3 - which makes the kitchensink vibe even stronger.

And that's all I have to say about that.

I've never understood why kitchen sink settings are disliked when the planet we live on is a kitchen sink setting.
Critical Role is theater kid dumbshit though and deserves the hate it gets here for making people think that's how TTRPGs are normally done.

i just dont like freakshit

Guess you don't like OD&D then, huh?
>>
>>98495087
It’s cause people treat it as unimaginative, acting like having the same biomes as real life environments is a waste rather than copying what works. Though I do get it, after a while you do get tired of “medieval Yurop”, “desert kingdom”, “coastline”, “frozen northlands”, “dark heart of Africa”, “Japasia”, and so on when they don’t bother to even make them more than just surface level.
>>
>>98495087
>just like real life!
We get enough real life in real life. Kitchensink settings are boring because they're themeparks with no real cohesion or history. How did Dinosaur Cowboy Island develop next to Steampunk Japasia which is a 2 days walk from Barbarian Skullfuck Mountain?
>>
>>98494888
i mean, it gives the current gen some of the old classics in a new package and thats perfectly fine.

Unless you are a boomer or feel like going retro with old adventures, you probably never experienced the "Vecna wants to be a god, stop him" plot and never had a taste of "Fall of legally destinct Netheril", the Not! Dawn War or the beginning of the Times of Troubles, but slightly different. For them, its all brand new, fresh and innovative.

Read the other part where he explains in great detail why d&d is supposed to be HUMANOCENTRIC

Yes you can technically let your players be fake and gay freakrace faggots, but it doesn’t negate the fact that they are then fake and gay freakrace faggots

>read my gay fanfiction about my headcanon for gygax's intent
No thanks, sis, I'm good.
