I decided to start this thread because i need to get out of my system a bit of frustration accumulated with the hobby, feel free to join in with your own.

Here goes:
>be me
>get asked to join online 5e game by friend
>not particularly fond of 5e and online games in general but whatever, i can still have my fun plus my friend wants to DM
>say to him that i'm in but, since i'm already playing in a rl game, i would prefer to partake in something not very intensive
>friend says that's fine
>after a couple of days friend adds me to a chat group, rushes me to make a character and write an articulated BG because we're having a session 0 in the evening of the same day
>wtf
>explain to him that usually session 0 is for making characters together other than simply introducing the game plus he's walking me on a tightrope since i was working on some stuff that day, but since he was very enthusiast i said that i would work it out for the game anyways
*strike one*
>build up a character on my phone, write on the spot a concise bg and send everything to him
>meet at the game
>session 0 is literally fucking session 1 since we start playing immediately
>game goes on okayish, friend is a little bit of awkward but considering it's his second experience at GMing he's doing great
>only complaint i have is the other guys being overtly thespians and forcing the playact more than needed. I was taking a relaxed approach (enacting my character when the spotlight required to and paraphrasing the roleplay on the rest) and those guys reprimanded multiple times to match their energy
*strike two*
[Part 1/3]
>>
>>98488481
>D&D 5e
Every warning you needed was right here and you chose to proceed anyway. Don't act surprised a system made BY retards FOR retards happens to attract mostly retards.
>>
>>98488481
>as the sessions progressed the group eventually got in tune (i made more effort in my playact and the other guys matched pacing), we're having fun all things considered
>friend and the other guys get more excited and start pushing for longer game sessions, i think it's a bad idea because i'm aware the DM may burn out faster but since i'm already invested and found my pacing i didn't oppose them aside from asking to friend if it wasn't much of a strain. He was ok
>things proceeded fine until the DM finally said out of the blue that wanted to play once instead of gming (called it) and another player proposed to run a one shot
>ask the new DM what's the game about and he said to make whatever character since, being a one shot, wasn't very important
>given the premise i said fine and applied to his game (by this point another player dropped off ghosting the chat)
>we start the new game and it's fucking curse of strahd
>the guys goes full atmosphere with soundtracks (which were so loud i had to mute them on my side to follow the game), animations and scripts
>me thinking "that's too much effort for a one shot" but i put that aside on the thought that maybe the guy was recycling a previous game setup
>i play a little bit recklessly (was coherent with the character i made) and die at the first big fight which ended the session
>GG i had fun afterall
>the next day the other guys ask for another one, the friend DM is excited but also says that he's going to contine his game another game of the week
>i smell bullshit but i make another character for the next game
>this time the pacing is HORRENDOUS, the new DM was already kind of phlegmatic the other session but now it's even more evident in this one
>RP scenes are long as fuck on top of being fucking strahd so we have to go through all the scripted events, dialogues and props, plus the game is linear as fuck
>the game session felt like an endless Teams call more than a fucking game
*strike three*
[Part 2/3]
>>
>>98488498
>weirdly enough the group is ecstatic, the DM is awarding inspiration left and right while i slowly but steadly tune out of the game eventually snapping. Fortunately i was having a lot of issues with my connection (which probably was the actual straw that broke the camel's back) and excused me out of it saying that it was unfeasible for me continuing on those conditions.
>aware of the fact the game got effectively hijacked in a intensive curse of strahd game i want to drop out
I'm going to explain this privately to my friend but i fucking hate it.

>inb4 fucking adhd zoomer
I'm a 41 years old guy with more than 25 years of experience on both sides of the table, if anything it's the opposite. I'm all in for serious games but, as i explained initially in my gt, that wasn't the kind of game i signed up for. On top of it these guys are green so they're can't really tell when they get railroaded but to me that illusionism is fucking transparent. I can put the thing on the side but you have to offset it in some other capacity, like for example having a decent pacing, i can't give a shit about flowery descriptions and complex ic moments if it's effectively a fucking uninteractive unstkippable cutscene, plus the DM was speaking softly and slowly (probably thinking it reinforced the atmosphere) for fucking 5 HOURS STRAIGHT!! I WAS WILLING TO SMASH MY BALLS WITH A SLEDGE HAMMER TO HAVE IT STOP, JHC!

>>98488492
In hindsight i should have been the wiser.

Honestly I'm sick of /tg/. I miss when we got shit done and were legendarily impossible to troll. I'm a 2013 newfag so I only experienced a few years of it, but it was a big part of my life.
My table is amazing, my games are really fun, it's just this fucking board that gets me down.
>>
>>98488643
I'm a late 2020 newfag and I'm still stunned at how this board rotted so fast in 6 years
>>
>>98488659
Board quality is downstream from moderation. And we had nazimod.
>>
>>98488643
And yet you're still here bitching about it every single day instead if moving the fuck on with your life.
>>
>>98488687
Hey, it's a vent thread, if anything you're the one joining to bitch about the bitching.
>>
>>98488481
My 2000 point mechanized marines I built when fifth edition launched are now worthless midgets that can't even translate to a newer edition list. I just really hate GW is all, I didn't get slow boiled like diehard players did, I wasn't in the pot for years so looking at what its become now with 11th launch its so jarring I feel nothing but contempt and disgust. So intensely I couldn't even enjoy Space Marine 2, it made me cringe every second of the twenty minutes I played it unlike the first one I played religiously. Now I have to deal with the total alienation from the slow boiled frogs who metamorphozed into predditors with plastic thor hammers on their desks, hate templates, slurs and fun in general. Fuck these cunts just as much as GW, they deserve eachother.
>>
>>98488498
>>98488501
To be fair to the guy he stinks of somebody who has never ran a game before based on me acting similarly to him when I was new so the fact that the overall group is enjoying his game in spite of his inexperience is actually a pretty good sign.
Aside from that idk dude if you aren't enjoying it just explain the situation to the group/GM in a mature manner and if a compromise can't be reached I'm willing to bet that the guy is just experimenting and doesn't even realize that you hate the heavy RP bow out until the old game comes back or it changes in a way that suits your interests better.
>>
>>98488953
the OP got bullied into participating in heavy 'playacting' against his will with men he doesn't know for hours on end. he has zero backbone and is probably a closeted homosexual. bitching about it anonymously in this thread is the extent of the opposition he will ever muster.
>>
>>98488953
Yeah i'm aware, i think it's his second experience as GM overhall, btw i'm not against heavy roleplay, it's more the overt reliance on narrative that's killing it for me. I guess i would be more eager and forgiving in partaking his game if he was my friend but, to be fair, i'm not so willing to indulge a guy i know nothing of despite joining a game with on roll20. I know it may sound entitled in a way but that's my free time i'm using there and the original deal was to play under my friend.

>>98489002
Nah, i took it as an excuse to start a thread.

That said i spoke to them and addressed my problem, we're going to try again with the next session and see how it goes.
>>
>>98488501
Maybe this is an age thing my dude. I'm 46, and it's the same for me. I don't play, but I GM. And I used to be into doing heavy RP all the time, just like the players you're talking about. I used to have 12 hour sessions every week and it was packed with intensive micro RP descriptions. But you get used to the heavy RP over time, and then that heavy RP becomes less and less impressive, to the point where it becomes tiresome and a chore, and just stops the game from progressing. I still like heavy RP, but limited to important interactions. Not fucking talking to the Innkeeper of some random Inn or whatever. Not everything is an important interaction that needs to be theatrically expressed. You're not in the wrong here, but neither are the other players/GM. You're just not a good fit for the group, and that's fine.
>>
>>98488481
>get asked to join online 5e game
Oh boy, off to a great start, I see.
>>
>>98489386
Fair point, i guess i will see how things fare next session, the DM said it wasn't a problem to speed up a little on filler elements and tune a bit less the atmosphere voicing (apparently that was not liked much even by the other players but they had fun regardless with the interactions), we agreed that if things don't end working for me we can split in friendly terms and play again together when my friend goes back to DMing.
>>
>>98489484
Sounds like you have good players to interact with. Pretty benign problem compared to real problem players.

We moved game night location from one house to another. The new host likes to host, so he feeds us which is no small thing, he's cooking for 5 guys and his wife so its a lot of food. And it's not like he's throwing frozen pizzas in the oven, he full on makes a full meal, main entree, sides, and accompaniments. Naturally for 6 people, that's a lot of money he's spending plus time and effort cooking. He's been doing this for about 10 sessions and I'm the only one that gives him money for his effort. The other three guys just thank him for the food and leave. Now the host isn't asking for money and is too nice to ask for money, but but I feel like it's very impolite to eat a meal and not contribute anything and leave. And maybe if this meal was a once in a while thing, like once a month it wouldn't be an issue but it's every week. And I make it obvious that I'm giving him money as I ask him how much you want me to chip in in front of the group but they just don't get the hint that I'm trying to hammer into their heads. I just feel like the other guys are taking advantage of the host's generosity and aren't contributing anything. It's weird because if the host ordered pizza and wings I think everyone would chip in to cover the cost but because its home made meal for some reason they think its okay to not contribute. That's my vent.
>>
>>98489883
I host my weekly games (my game room is nice, and I don't want to deal with cramped apartments, or fucking screaming children, or a bathroom with crispy handtowels and watered-down goddamn handsoap) and I provide food as well, but it's mostly just a couple costco pizzas (my wife will cook every once in a while).

But I cannot imagine making real food each week. I'm thankful that my group is always very grateful. You seem like a nice person, I'm sure your friend is grateful for your appreciation, but.. if it's anything like me, having to not drive around, or deal with someone's gross house is worth the 20 bucks a week lol

I hate the push towards cozy games and overt power fantasies.

I guess I get wanting to feel powerful as we watch the American empire crumble in real time, but aren't games supposed to be about challenges? I've ever had playoids not want to play a one-shot of Call of Cthulhu to celebrate Halloween because the characters are weak.

>>98488643

We had something special going on here in the 2000's. Nowadays I feel like it's just the same 10 people posting over and over. I can recognize the same opinions and writing styles.
>>
>>98488807
Me and the lads decided just to stick with 5th or earlier. Bollocks to nuhammer and ruleslite tourneyhammer, we play the stuff we enjoyed over beers and crisps and enjoy it
>>
>>98488682
when did you realize that moderation is only bad if done by feminized faggots or troons?
>>
>actually started doing cool stuff and meeting cool people
>the events are so unique that I can't post them here as I become immediately doxxable
>so instead of getting good posts /tg/ doesn't get them, reducing board quality

I'm not famous but I can see why people like Suggers had to stop posting.

The LGS we've been going to for nearly 20 years fucked us over.
>store was small but had a separate room in the back
>we would play our games back there
>built a nice rapport with owner
>6 years later, they move to a larger location with a huge basement
>said we could have the entire basement to ourselves
>was great, we were definitely spoiled with all the space and privacy we got.
>continued our patronage and friendship with owner
>at the start of this year they move again
>go back near the original location. no basement.
>told that part of it will be separated by a wall from the main part for wargames and TTRPGs
>okay sounds good
>first week we get there we see that they lied and there is no separate area
>store is just a large square room. smaller then last place actually.
>that's fine, we can make this work.
>card tournament going on and it is so loud from all these faggots we can't hear anything.
>go to talk to the owner
>some new guy we've never seen "will be speaking on behalf" of the owner
>immediately he has a stick up his ass about our group
>we ask if it would be okay to bring in a folding room divider to help deafen the sound
>this cunt tells us we can't bring ANYTHING in
>"AND GET YOUR MAPS, TERRAIN, AND OTHER SHIT OUT OR IT GOES IN THE TRASH!" >we all try to get ahold of the owner to discuss thing
>never hear back.

I'm not gonna make some blanket statement about how loyalty means nothing and don't trust people, because that's a retarded take, but fuck man ... 20 years and we don't even an attempt to discuss things? Our group isn't huge, there are 18 of us, but we were still customers that respected the store and appreciated the space they gave us. We now play at the house of a friend who was kind enough to let us in so it has a happy ending, but still the whole situation pissed us all off.
>>
>>98490139
are you storing personal property at their store? this story doesnt make any sense, why would the new guy allow fucking 18 of you set up in the first place if he doesnt want you there at all?
>>
>>98490221
We always had our maps, terrain, and two large white boards in the basement. Before they moved we asked if they needed us to get out things and the owner's son (whom we also had a good relationship with) said not to worry about it and they would bring them to the new store.

Like I said, I've NEVER seen this employee who was yelling at us before. Not in all the years we had been going. So when we go to the new store all the stuff we had left in the basement was sitting in a small storage room they had.

I tried again recently to reach out to the owner and his son. Still nothing and I don't see either active online.

Card faggots are such a disease. But on some level I get pandering to them. There was a dude at work who was looking for someone to pick up one of those collector sets for him since he couldn't get out of his shift. 300 bucks for the equivalent of 12 boosters. And this guy was driving around a car in limp home mode. That's some serious dedication/addiction. Whereas an aging group of miniature wargamers probably has most of the stuff they need already and RPG players will share books and pirate PDFs.
>>
>>98490476
Yeah, I really did feel like Homer in that episode where he's yelling at Moe for losing him as a customer, but Moe can't hear Homer over all the customers throwing money at him and the cash register getting filled to the brim.
>>
>>98490258
They sold the store.

I host a weekly game at my place (I have a gaming table in my basement) and I cook a meal. It astonishes the two zoomers in the group, but this was a very normal thing 20 or 30 years ago. I have never asked for money, but if someone wants to contribute I tell them to bring snacks, desserts, or beer. That’s just part of game day for me. It’s a social event with people I know, so food and beer are mandatory.

The rise of online gaming has been more damaging than some realize.

Friend of mine, chefbro, runs a pathfinder group. He's enthusiastic but he's made a few mistakes like having too many players. There's 7 players, so doing anything takes ages. He's also frustrated that only three of us, myself and two others, want to roleplay, the others just want to beeline the next fight and roll dice instead of interacting with the world he created, and ones a minmaxxer whom makes busted characters with insane plusses to stuff. But he can't get rid of the minmaxxer as he's got ties to three of the others, so he would know if he was missing out, and two of those have ties to one of the role players, so it's a mess.
Also chefbro refuses to try any game other than dnd or pathfinder despite my efforts. Though I may have him, I agreed to run a pathfinder campaign for him and a few others on the condition I get to run another afterwards using a system of my choosing. I hope to break him out of the d20 cult.

I’ve got color autism bigly and I’ve bought so many different shades and tones of the same colored paint to find the right one usually under the assumption the dried state is different from the bottle liquid form.

I’m a bit stupid too because one minute I’m thinking of bright colors and thinking they’re too bright and another time I pick more realistic tones and think they’re too dark that they’ll look like black blobs at tabletop viewing distance.

You sound like a whiny faggot. I was expecting something offputting to happen but its just you bitching about your friends behind their back.
>>
I have come to the brutal conclusion after 8 years of playing that

D&D is a lot more fun in my head then in reality.

I also think most people who DM this game think they can recreate the epic moments in video games, movies or novels on the table and it just doesn't work that way.
