What's the most money you ever spent in a game that provided no mechanical benefit?

I once tried to have my character try to court a princess from a small allied kingdom. Worst mistake of his life.
>>
>>98489439
Zero, and I regret nothing.
>>
>>98489439
Whatever pittance rope, pitons, and dozen torches would cost. The DM never bothered to track light sources or have any verticality in his dungeons.

>Why do you have so many wallets?
>I don't tip, so I put 50 gold in a wallet and hide it in a drawer to appease the prostitute.

To clarify, despite being the princess of a small nowhere kingdom with no real power, she thought herself super important and special and demanded to be treated as such, and would try to hoover up money from me and the party to throw grand events for herself and such.

>>98490481
Unironically ACTUALLY hiring a prostitute probably would have been a better use of money, with less headaches involved and probably better sex.

Just get your woman the old fashioned way.
>be me
>space pirate captain
>party catches a small but expensive ship in an ambush
>board it and start killin and plunderin
>ship belongs to a noble family from a nearby world
>ship is transporting 20 year old noble daughter back home from visiting offworld familiy
>she is cowering in the panic room as we melt the door off its hinges with thermite
>take her prisoner and move her back to our ship to ransom her for big payday
>we get sidetracked through some wormhole shenanigans and end up having to go on a long space journey to get this girl back home so we can finally get paid
>along the way we just decide fuck it and let her out of her cell. she's extremely shy and we underestimate her as harmless
>we get in multiple combats, take her to seedy spaceport bars, she kinda becomes our mascot
>in one of the combats our engineer gets knocked out and is about to get shot in the face by some mercs we pissed off
>noble girl picks up a gun off a body and blasts merc in the back saving engi
>when combat ends the ship doc resuscitates engi and we tell him what happened
>party decides to lift up noble girl and throw her in the air while chanting "One of us! One of us!"
>she has way more fun with us than her sheltered noble life so she just outright joins our crew
>other player characters have their own love interests except mine, the captain
>they start to spend time together on the observation deck watching the stars pass by while the ship flies
>they fall in love and elope in to marriage
>noble family eventually learns of this and is fucking pissed
>convinced my character forced himself on her and made her do it
>she sends them a video call of her weaing a spiky leather punk vest with a red skull and crossbones patch while smoking a cigarette
>they are completely dumbfounded and confused. now blame my character for corrupting their precious daughter

And that's the story of how my character married a noble he kidnapped.

I don't recall the exact quantity, but I had an Estalian diestro who spent all his money on wine to share with the rest of the party, baths at a coaching inn, and cologne for himself in WFRP.
>>
>>98490481
That is literally just how nobles (not just princesses) of no particular importance and limited means work. They exist on couch surfing.
>>
>>98492588
Oh, and extra clothes so he'd have something to wear besides travelwear stained with mud and goblin blood.
>>
>>98490709
i liked where this was going but it turned gay 1/3 of the way through. im thankful it never happened
>>
>>98492617
I wouldn't marry a kidnapped princess, personally, but I would find it amusing to make one a pirate crew's mascot. Add a bit of whimsy and brand identity.
>>
>>98489439
I bought platinum in Warframe once to use on a cosmetic

Be a toss-up between my oath of poverty monk and my assassin who donated some of his cash to an orphanage. Total spent probably goes to the assassin though, that campaign lasted longer and even if he was still spending a decent chunk on himself the donations got pretty hefty by the end of the campaign.

Queen Rebecca of the Maple Syrup Kingdom smiles upon you.
>>
>>98490481
The fact that she was a princess probably had nothing to do with it to be honest...
>>
an OSR game i played in had some organic money sinks. yeah it's OSR so gp = XP, but we were working towards fixing the church roof and snit.

it all 'mattered' in the end, that's just how these games work (rebuilt church = oh cool, a new cleric in town). but it was part of the 'story' the same way as
>my epic D&D courtroom case: a greentrxt dale.
>>
Relative to how much money I actually made was a paladin who donated most of what he made to whoever seemed to most need it and never expected or got anything back for it.
The most as in biggest number was a Traveller character who gave his savings to his parents because he thought he was going on a suicide mission.
>>
I think we would need to exclude "at the end of the campaign" expenditures; those shouldn't count, because nothing has a mechanical benefit when the game is over. Otherwise, I could say "a tract of land and a farmhouse."

Other than that? Probably only a paltry 100 gold pieces to get a kid out of town who only joined up with an evil group because he had no other way to make ends meat.

I once left several thousand gold with an NPC as "ransom" money in case my character was captured in enemy territory... and then just sorta forgot about it and never went back for the money when I DIDN'T get captured.

If you aren't spending your spare money in WFRP to live it up, you're totally missing the point. You're gonna die a bad death most likely no matter what, make good memories while you can. Or save up enough to retire, but good luck.
>>
>>98489439
I've spent about 40 000 gold to buy a tavern. It was destroyed two sessions later by plot happening, and we've never returned to this place.

I've seen this happen to many players. There's kind of a trope in TTRPGS that any good-looking woman who approaches the party for any reason whatsoever is evil, opportunistic, or a dude with shape-shifting magic. DMs know this shit works on players, especially if there are no actual women in the group to get jealous about it.
>>
>>98489439
>What's the most money you ever spent in a game that provided no mechanical benefit?

Wealthy characters have spent any amount of money doing impressive shit for no reason. An early high expense is matching uniforms for the group. Banners. Eventually a castle or manor, and then a second.
>>
>>98490481
That's just a woman thing.
>>
>>98489439
Went to a slave auction. Bought everyone. Proceeded to Manumit them on the spot.
