Do people unironically still give a shit about "Brackets" in this format? The entire concept is so flawed and retarded, as it's just a list of universally good cards when looked at by themselves.
Can't play a tutor without my deck being bracket 4 or whatever, meanwhile stoneforge miystic is a-ok even though it does more for equip-reliant decks than any other tutor does for any deck, meanwhile you can also play a bracket 1 deck that chains 6 extra turns into each other and comes packed with half a dozen infinite combos.
>>
>>98495244
>meanwhile you can also play a bracket 1 deck that chains 6 extra turns into each other
Nigger failed to even read the bracket rules before criticizing them.
>>
>>98495249
Still fucking retarded. Still doesn't even address the fact that synergy cards can have much more impact on the game than any "problematic" Power Staple when put in a list that can profit heavily off them.
>>
>>98495244
I only care about brackets in that it gives me hope that they’ll unban some cards and put them on the game changer list instead.
>>
>>98495278

>>

is voltron bracket 4 or what
>>
>>98495286
Depends on what you're voltronning and how fast you're voltronning it.
There's no single archetype in any bracket except that bracket 5 is obviously turbo combo.
>>
>>98495284
It just doesn't make an ounce of sense to me. For example, a control deck lives off having the right response in your hand if you're not looking to get steamrolled by whatever turbo-aggressive niggerfaggot synergy deck the opponent is running. Tutor effects are pretty much mandatory just so you even get to see lategame without solely relying on RNG.
>>
>>98495300
Well guess what, both you and the "turbo-aggressive niggerfaggot synergy" are probably playing in bracket 4 together in that case. There's no single card that says you're in a bracket, the construction of your deck and the speed at which it seeks victory over all does.
Gamechangers are just exemplars of this philosophy. You can make bracket 5 decks without a single gamechanger and you can make a deck stuffed full of gamechangers that ends up bracket 1 because it's not able to use them correctly.
But again: exercise some fucking judgment. You know what you're doing when you make the deck. You're not a monkey, so stop pretending to misunderstand.
>>
>>98495308
But that's not the case when you can build certain archetypes that are "technically bracket 1" but are constructed in a way that clearly pushes more towards a high power build with dense consistency and low mana curve. Just remove the problematic no-no cards and you're good.
>>
>>98495327
You're not a monkey, so stop pretending to misunderstand. It is not a lawyer contract. You know what you're doing when you make the deck.
>>
>>98495330
The system is retarded and the rules read like they have been shat out by a bunch of mentally challenged gradeschoolers during lunch break. Instead of 2-card combos I can simply pack my deck with an infinite number of easily attainable 3-card-combos, call my deck Bracket 1 and then go on to stomp a bunch of precon shitters while everyone claps.
>>
>>98495359
>I don't need RNG I just need to make 3 card combos in 100 card singleton without tutors
welcome to retardation
>>
>>98495359

There's tons of cards that let you tutor specific combo pieces without being in the le heggin epic list of problematic """GAME CHANGERS"""" Just make sure all your cards are in that grey area, instead of picking the slightly more efficient option that would instantly put your deck in bracket 3+.

>>98495308
You're wrong on the second point. Gamechangers are banned or limited in lower brackets. That's a concrete rule. The catch is that for most of them, there's some lesser-power alternative that a deci could run in its place instead.
>>
Should I go with reaper king or ur dragon for a changeling deck? Reaper King gets more flavor points because the deck would run a whole heap of lorwyn/shadowmoor cards but ur dragon would make the deck run much smoother, I imagine.
>>
>>98495510

>I have ancient tomb in my EoE precon because I cracked one the same day I bought it, that cool with everyone?

It's amazing watching the general shift of all the magic the gathering related threads from anti-universes beyond to indifference to pro. And then Commander general, dick riding the rules committee has gotten a little bit out of hand. I remember when the brackets were first discussed everybody rightfully said it was the most retarded shit the faggot rules committee had ever come up with. And now here we are, people actually engaging with his bracket at nonsense, then to random anonymous posters defending shaky bans tooth and nail like their lives depended on it. The only thing that keeps this thread of 4chan is people will say nigger and faggot unabashedly. Other than that it might as well be r/edh
>>
>>98495757
That was actually just one of the 20 examples I gave where brackets don't make sense. I'm a bracket 4 player for the most part, none of this shit even really matters to me, I'm just bothered by the fact that people are pieces of shit when it comes to labelling their deck as what it is and give others a genuine idea of what to bring to the table. Cause it seems to happen quite frequently.

Brackets were created because bad deck builders kept getting their shit pushed in by people who have a concept of synergy. That's the only reason. Reddit posters kept crying about getting stomped
>>
>>98495802
You would have to be Jeskai at minimum imo to have answers in hand against combos, probably play hard pillowfort or stax light and only peek out to swing when you're confident you're not about to have your commander eat shit
>>
>>98495792
You must understand, this game loves sneaks and cowards. Because nerds are usually sneaks and cowards. It doesn't take a substack post to explain why they use every excuse in the book to call themselves bracket 3 players instead of being honest and up front about being cedh. Exceptions allowed, of course.
>>
>>98495821
lol watch out boys we've got a power gamer here
>>
>>98495809
I'm simply baffled by how people can take this balance system serious at all when a bracket 2 deck can mean anything from between "I just picked up a precon from the store shelf on a whim", and "My list has all the markings of a semi-cedh deckbuild, I just made some strategic cuts in the list to make sure I can still rightfully label it as bracket 2". It's a valid point of criticism, not sure why you refuse to get it.
>>

No, on second thought, you're right.

Anyway, sidenote: does anyone want to review my B1 Cabbage Merchant deck. It's Bracket 1 because it's just thematic around my favorite funny little guy from my favorite TV show, who goes all up and "my cabbages" all over the table. There's a few gamechangers, and it wins early, but brackets are guidelines and not rules, so clearly it can be played beside a "cowboy hat tribal" deck without any imbalance.

Or maybe they were created because people brought speed to a format originally designed around durdling battlecruisers and there needed to be at least some way to separate decks so some people could enjoy slower casual games, some people could do instant win combo faggotry and give pods a rough idea on what you are going to deal with at a table as a quick, sweeping generalization. Brackets are a fine tool to give you a rough concept in what power level everyone is using. I hate using my meme b2 miracle deck against a b4 deck and likewise I don't want to pub stomp with a proliferate infect Sultai deck against a guy that just wants to Voltron with Cloud. I really don't understand what the fuck is so confusing about rough guidelines for deck strength

I don't think that would work at all, since the main price point of expensive cards comes from them being good in a lot of lists, vs. niche cards that can feel just as broken in a list that can fully utilize them but can be picked up for a couple cents.
And honestly, since netdecking is so prevalent these days, I don't even think a lot of people buying these lists out of ill will but simply because they get to do so while on the pot taking a shit versus actually investing time into the project.

I'm ambivalent on brackets. I build to them because WotC's word is god for most players, and they're at least "a" metric on power level vs. none.

The Good
>common vernacular for casual players
>limits high-powered staples in brackets 3 and below, creates deck building decisions at b3 for your "power slots"
>segregates CEDH
>segregates combo

Cons
>b2 and b3 can play together for the most part, but assuming competent players the power gap between b3 and b4 is so sweaty it may as well be the gap between b2 and CEDH
>asinine game-changer list, afraid of being "too big," and therefore misses random powerful cards that just get auto-included in the 99 (what the fuck is Deflecting Swat not doing on here?)
>game changers as a concept are toxic to game design, enabling lazy regulation of the banned list on WotC's part; they can now just print strong cards that are bad for the format and put them on the list
>Jewish Corporate "MLD" trick (redefining "Destruction" to "Denial" when historically Blood Moon/Back to Basics effects were considered a separate entity)

And I'm sure a million more cons desu. But I do miss regular old EDH.
>>
>>98496029
> game changers as a concept are toxic to game design, enabling lazy regulation of the banned list on WotC's part;
I disagree. Game changers as a concept provide a release valve for people who would otherwise complain about strong, but not game-breaking cards. There’s no world in which Rhystic Study is a truly banworthy card but Sphere of Resistance isn’t, and yet Rhystic had people brigading for it to be banned. By making it a game-changer, you can ensure that the whiners don’t have to see it too often while retaining its legality for others.
>they can now just print strong cards that are bad for the format and put them on the list
That’s unironically good for game design. The game is at its best when it’s being designed for 60-card and EDH players pick and choose what works in the format. The more leeway WotC has to not consider EDH during the design process, the better.
>>
>>98496018
>"in any deck that would call for Equip Tutoring”
That's as retarded as saying "Ashnod's Altar is better than Phyrexian Altar for decks that care about colorless mana!" That's not a statement on why Phyrexian Altar is supposedly weak, that's just a scenario where a specialized option fits more, and even then that's not a consistent argument because of that flexibility on D-Tutor's part. You can't fetch an immediate boardwipe or counterspell with Stoneforge. You can't fetch a Triumph of the Hordes with it. You can't fetch a Bolas's Citadel with it. You can't fetch most of your deck with it, and that flexibility is what makes D-Tutor so good.

You actually are just whining that an equipment deck is kicking your ass. Run Edict effects. You can fetch a lot of them with D-Tutor.

>thinks rhystic study SHOULDN'T be banned
Barring you not knowing what you're talking about, that's 100% part of the lazy design. Creating a safe space where people don't recognize how busted these cards are lets WotC just ignore the entire problem.

>That’s unironically good for game design. The game is at its best when it’s being designed for 60-card and EDH players pick and choose what works in the format. The more leeway WotC has to not consider EDH during the design process, the better.

no shit, that's literally what I said. I'm not arguing that stoneforge is a better general-purpose tutor than Demonic, I'm saying that if the thing you want to tutor is an equipment, Stoneforge gives you a 2-mana tutor that also leaves a body behind and discounts the card it fetched
The Ashnod's Altar analogy actually proves my point: if a deck specifically wants colorless mana, Ashnod's Altar is the relevant comparison. If a deck specifically wants to tutor equip, stoneforge is the relevant comparison.
Demonic might be the better all-purpose card, but it doesn't magically make stoneforge worse at the thing stoneforge is specifically designed to do

There's absolutely nothing stopping you at that point from grabbing some degenerate combo piece because you very evidently don't have any restraint.

And save the "but muh tutor for equipment! Muh voltron!" Voltron is not an archetype thay consistently wins games. There are several ways to deal with it. Aristocrat into a Gravepact. I don't mind brackets. Building to b3 has felt a lot less muddled, now that specific cards have been named for "hey, don't include a lot of these." I'll admit I ran a lot of staple slop in my decks prior to brackets. Admittedly they served as buttresses for decks that weren't particularly strong, but I was still jamming DT/VT in every black deck, Ancient Tomb and Mana Crypt in every deck ever, Chrome Mox where it fit, etcetera.

B3 would almost be my ideal bracket, some power but not all. If they allowed people to run punishing stuff like Magus of the Moon and outright forbade 2-card combos, I think it'd be pretty much perfect.
>>
>>98496396
>There's absolutely nothing stopping you at that point from grabbing some degenerate combo piece
Yea, except the entire concept of deckbuilding constraint. By that logic every tutor automatically means “I’m trying to play cEDH,” because technically I could tutor for Thoracle.
That’s not an argument about the deck. That’s an argument about what cards exist in Magic.
>>
>>98496444
>except the entire concept of deckbuilding constraint.
You're running Demonic Tutor. The notion of "deckbuilding constraint" is already a farce at that point.

>By that logic every tutor automatically means “I’m trying to play cEDH,”
No it isn't. There are a myriad of playable but not-as-good tutors you can run, and I even gave you several examples. The problem isn't the existence of tutors, the problem if you're here bitching and crying that you can't run the best one in the game without going up a bracket. I've already said both of these points, please address them instead of hoping I don't notice you omitting them, you dumbass.

>>
>>98496518
That's not a flaw in my argument, it's the assumption you're trying to smuggle into it.
“You could run a worse card” does not prove “running the better card makes the deck a Game Changer.”
If Demonic Tutor finds my fair deck's normal gameplan, the fact that I could have made the deck objectively worse by playing Splinter's Technique is irrelevant to what the deck actually does.

A deck can be tuned to kill people more consistently without being tuned to assemble a turn-3 Thoracle line.
“You chose the strongest card for the job” ≠ “you chose a higher-power gameplan.”

Otherwise literally every optimized deck is Bracket 5 by definition.

NTA but tutors are anti-fun, so you should at least be paying more for them. Just run other tutors instead or accept that you deck is bracket 3 for running the best ones.
>>
>>98496553
That being said I do think some GCs should be banned outright, and other cards should be moved onto the list to make the decisions a bit difficult. There's little argument NOT to run cards like The One Ring or Rhystic Study in your three bracket 3 slots. And some of the choices are stupid.
>should I run Demonic Tutor, one of the best black cards to exist?
>or should I run Opposition Agent?

Not that it will ever happen but I would unironically ban Cyclonic Rift, The One Ring, Demonic Tutor, among a few other egregious no-brainer cards from the format. (1) "Wizards says so" is a valid response in the face of your arbitration and constant misunderstanding of the bracket system, because it's their fomat. You're doing the same thing as rolling up to a Modern tournament with a Reanimate in deck and going "guys I promise the rest of the deck is bad!" That's just not how it works.
(2) Your argument is just a retarded version of the Sorites paradox. You're trying to argue that incremental changes on their own don't increase a deck's power level to the point of upgrading brackets, but you don't get at some point one of those increments actually does tip it over. Thankfully WotC put out a nice little list of cards that are so strong that they cross that line on their own, so that paradox is a non-issue here.
(3) You keep jumping between "I neeeed this to answer Voltron" and "I neeeee this to get what my deck is built to do!" Clearly you do acknowledge and value the card's flexibility you're just disingenuous enough to pretend that it's one or the other at a given moment.
(4) You yourself think Demonic Tutor is deck-warping enough that downgrading it would ruin your deck and make it unable to answer certain threats. Your own premise betrays what you think of the card's power amidst your constant downplay-whining.
(5) You can upgrade your deck by compensating it in other areas without needing a gamechanger lynchpin. You never need a Demonic Tutor in bracket 2.

>WotC explicitly decided Demonic Tutor is a Game Changer.
Fine. That's a rules/design decision, not some profound proof that every deck running it is inherently higher-power.
The rest is just “better cards make decks better” + “you could run Grim Tutor instead.”
Yes. Grim Tutor is worse. Congratulations, you found the point of card evaluation.
>>
>>98496968
Yes, the GC system has its flaws. Congratulations.
>>
That's literally my argument, yes.
“The system says Demonic Tutor is a Game Changer” =/= “therefore Demonic Tutor makes every deck functionally Bracket 4.”

I'm criticizing the categorization, not failing to understand it. You keep explaining the rule back to me like that somehow makes the rule correct.
>>
>>98496980
Nice. Your deck is still bracket 3.
>>
>>98496980
I think that's a pretty good point. Sheldon's vision for edh was using survival of the fittest to tutor for the worst creature anyone has ever seen. You can easily make shit decks with good cards.

>>
>>98496980
>therefore Demonic Tutor makes every deck functionally Bracket 4
You want to know what I don't get? A single GC doesn't make a deck a bracket 4. A single gamechanger makes it a bracket 3. There's either other shit going on in your deck already that's pushed it into te edge of Bracket 3 without the Tutor that you're not telling the thread, that or you're placing way too much faith on the word of your group when they don't know what bracket 4 is. Which is it?
>>
Brackets now and always will be more about vibes. How hard are you trying to actually win the game, that's all brackets are. A semi formal way to categorize your deck based on that criteria.
>>
>>98496997
Points 2–5:
>“Demonic Tutor is good, therefore running it means you're escalating.”
Yes, I understand the fucking syllogism.
You keep proving the card is strong, not that the deck is doing something degenerate with it.
>“But you could tutor for Thoracle”
isn't deck analysis. It's card text.

>>98497014
That's fair, and “functionally Bracket 4” was overstating it.
My actual point is that Demonic Tutor gets treated as a meaningful power-level signal regardless of what the deck is doing with it, while narrower tutors often don't.

>>
>>98497026
The table can't know what you're doing with it if they're randoms, so all they have to go off of is that you're willing to play it in the first place to fetch who knows what else on the GC list. If your usual playgroup knows what you're getting with it and they're mistakening it for bracket 4, then clearly you're consistently doing something impactful with it.

Pulled a foil one at the prerelease and is the sole reason I don’t use it because of how bad it looks. Even worse is cards like Zidane Ragavan, Cloud Najeela, etc. use their promo artwork and Kuja has one as well so I’m baffled why that wasn’t used instead.

I honestly don't think Voltron is bad; it's just there are a lot of bad Voltron players.

Here are some unsolicited tips:
- Commander Damage wins games, but if you can only win a game to Commander Damage your deck is a joke to shut down. Have alternative targets to stack up and remember: dead is dead; if you gotta hit them with 40 damage, don't get all fussy.
- Blowing your load early is the #1 way to lose games. Don't knock out the first player you can, or else you're just making the game easier for the two other players. Build protection and board presence and look for the right time to strike.
- Extra combats and extra turns are your friends; sometimes you'll be able to set up a one-turn blowout, but more often than not your gameplan is going to revolve around going off when somebody else thinks its their win. Be in the final 3. Be in the final 2; then secure the win.
- Politics is not just for politics decks. Small beaning won't ever work, but manage your threat profile. If you can slow play it and assemble lethal at the last possible moment, it's better than leaving shit on board to be knocked out.
- If all else fails; adjust the deck. There is never a decklist that can't be improved or changed to suit your commander or style better; if you can't win games with it, blame the cards only when you've actually played the cards enough to know what they're doing for you

This is strictly not true. A theft deck that is picking and choosing pieces from across the table is, at minimum, denying those pieces to other players at the table. To even take a vanilla 1/1 from across the table is to deny the player a blocker and provide you an attacker.

Theft decks are broadly built to exploit the discrepancy in effect and in a multiplayer format you can be stealing the best creatures from the table and using them against the board least-equipped to handle them. Then thanks to the sac payoffs, you can have mana and cards to play a ludicrous post-combat board while still holding enough mana for counterspells and removal.

I'm strongly inclined to believe the deck is a 3 and if it isn't playing 2000 dollars worth of lands in a 2 is kinda shitty behavior anyway.

The "sac outlet" part doesn't really apply to Edea, if a creature dies under the control of the Edea controller, then it returns to the battlefield under it's owners control. I will tell you what happens most of the time.

>Steal creature, attack a random player
>Creature returns to owner at eot or I sac it for value and it returns to owner
>Opponent attacks me and I chump block it or throw my commander under the bus
>or (more likely than not, opponent attacks someone else)

The last game I played last night someone explicitly told me "there's no way your deck is bracket two, you have to have some gamechangers in there"

Right here. What do you think a perfect mana base is?
What would that word be?
Gee. I don't fucking know.
Nice attempt to move the goal posts though,
The level of the average precon, will not have that mana base. Ever. Ergo, having that manabase instantly disqualifies it as a 2.
You can cope all you want that they are "just lands" but if "just lands" are all that matters, you don't need that mana bases, all basics would do.
You even said, in your own words, you "need it because I need to get my commander out as soon as possible"
Which, is just more admission you're being a worthless sweat. You have 0 way to even imagine not sweating your ass off because god forbid, timmy with his shitty boros precon does better than you with his taplands.
You're a faggot. Plain and simple. Just play at a 3 and stop being a dumb retard.

Yeah, nope. The first thing every player needs to do is cut all tap lands. In fact, WOTC needs to quit making them at all.
>>
>>98498825

Because you have a couple of true duals and fetches including off color ones which is super sweaty, but then you have a shit ton of basics but none of the duals that will almost always come in untapped like Bond Lands or Slow Lands.
>>

What about all those times where you have a fetchland but nothing to cast this turn? In that case it's optimal to fetch into a Triome or Surveil Land...

The fact you give it back when you're done with it doesn't for a moment stop the dirty shit you get up to with it while you have it.

Lets say Edea doesn't have any good targets and gets a fucking vanilla 1/1. Lets see what you can do with that:
- Golden Throne says "Sorry, here you go, have your 1/1 back, I'll just take 3 mana and draw a card"
- Szera says "My bad, have your 1/1 back, I'll get 1 mana and draw a card."
- Rakdos says "Yeah okay, have your 1/1, now let me see the top card of your deck so I can cast it and also I'll draw a card."
- Shadowheart says, "Oops, I didn't know it was yours, have it back and I'll draw two"
- Kethek says, "Eh, okay have it back, I'm just going to find my Viscera Seer and draw a card."
- Ayara says, "Take 1 and I'll heal one, have it back I don't even want it. Also I'm going to draw a card."
- Industrial Advancement searches 1 and almost certainly whiffs, but you still draw a card.

God forbid it be a token; cause then the opponent doesn't even get it back. There's no downside and this is the absolute floor of the effect. Multiple Edeas is multiple sacs and geometric draw from the sacs.

Like it's a fun fucking deck, I like the idea of it and it does cool stuff, but sandbagging with it is weak shit. If it's not performing at a 3 table it's because you're jerking off with it on purpose to fuck over bracket 2s or you're just actively bad.

>>
>>98498892
The color pie was never good to begin with and needs major revisions. Limiting essential game mechanics to specific colors is fucking retarded autist game design. Every color should be able to remove any card type, draw efficiently, counterspell, etc, but how they PAY to do it should be different. Sure Blue is the best at countering so they only pay mana, but Green should be able to counter saccing a creature or some shit in addition to mana, etc.

Of course this is a pointless convo to have because after nearly 4 decades the color pie will obviously never be fixed and there's too many actual brainlets who'll defend it. These same people will of course then turn around and bitch about how it seems like every Commander needs to be three colors (to make up for the shitty color pie) that does thing and draws card without understanding why WotC has to keep releasing that garbage to try and patch up the myriad of flaws in the color pie design.
