What is your favorite way to make a rogue who isn't a criminal? I was thinking about giving my character a background as a detective to explain how he's so good at sneaking and lockpicking.
>>
Would you count repentant criminal turned crime fighter? Something along the lines of Eugene Vidocq.
Alternatively, stage performer / sleight-of-hand magician.

A P.I or a former agent/spy of a lord.
>>
Some kind of military covert ops specialist could also work in a modern/near future setting. I guess that would be more of a fighter/rogue multiclass type thing.

By making a rogue who isn't a criminal.

A small, crafty guy who knows he isn't big enough to be a frontliner that takes people in a straight fight and instead uses trickery to get shit done instead making the most of what he's got.
The sort of guy that stabs someone in the back because "Well its the safest way, isn't it?"

Was Odysseus an rogue? I'd probably do it like that. No this has nothing to do with that shit new movie I havent watched, I just finished a bronze age fiction series.

I mean that is a fun and valid way of playing them but your thread neither has an inflammatory statement nor a goon-worthy image so dont expect much discourse on the matter

Fighter/Archer with high int and charisma

The most obvious would be going into Robin Hood/Goemon Ishikawa kind of dude. Someone who is stealing and pillaging and fighting against the corrupted law and gives away his loot to the poor.

On the other spectrum maybe a privateer scenario? Privateer specifically meant a pirate hired by government to attack and pillage ships of other countries, but you can probably expand the idea generally to thiefs and rogues?

Also Erik/The Phantom Of The Opera - just an unfortunate guy with autistic levels of skill in designing buildings with a lot of space for sneaking and hiding that ended working few assassination jobs.

Jason of the Argonauts may have been a rogue.

Quasimodo as unlikely Thief-Acrobat.
Jean Valjean as straight up Rogue.
>>

What game/setting?
>>
>>98494427
Rogue is the perfect everyman class. Young adventurer starting out, old sailor who's been around the world, a fat merchant caught up in violence, a seasoned courtier, modern selfinsert slop, Vancian dark comedy realism, etc.
>>

Why would the game be relevant to this question? Even the setting doesn't really matter. A rogue is a rogue whether they're in Cimmeria or Cloud City.

Adventurer-archaeologist

It definitely would.

A "rogue" in 30s Chicago is perhaps an impoverished immigrant that has no other way to make a living, a "rogue" in Faerun can be your Robin Hood type of character.
