What is your favorite way to make a rogue who isn't a criminal? I was thinking about giving my character a background as a detective to explain how he's so good at sneaking and lockpicking.
Would you count repentant criminal turned crime fighter? Something along the lines of Eugene Vidocq.Alternatively, stage performer / sleight-of-hand magician.

Some kind of military covert ops specialist could also work in a modern/near future setting. I guess that would be more of a fighter/rogue multiclass type thing.

Someone who is stealing and pillaging and fighting against the corrupted law and gives away his loot to the poor.On the other spectrum maybe a privateer scenario? Privateer specifically meant a pirate hired by government to attack and pillage ships of other countries, but you can probably expand the idea generally to thiefs and rogues?Also Erik/The Phantom Of The Opera - just an unfortunate guy with autistic levels of skill in designing buildings with a lot of space for sneaking and hiding that ended working few assassination jobs.
