It’s literally the same weapon with a slightly different blade shape

I'll stab you for that.

The different weapons in your image are from different places and time periods. They did not usually coexist but often inspired one another as refinements upon a design to suit the needs of the moment.
>>

/thread
it's just that, different designs from different regions and time periods. The same goes with a lot of other stuff
>>

Yeah? With what kind of knife?

Have you tried not playing D&Dogshit?

Do you not play games?

you've take an important step towards realizing that both of those games are DnD, good job

I mean is not like weapons are made for historias to memorise.

how many types of guns are their.
>>
>>98502740

Somebody in the 70's wanted to flex his historical autism. For practical purposes they are all the same fucking thing and should be just listed as "polearm, d10, 10 foot range".

It was nice of people in ye olden times to think of the future generations like that.

Most of these already are covered by some combination of halberd, spear, and sometimes glaive

Aside from some pretty extreme variations in length, the blades have specialized functions, axe heads for chopping, hooks for pulling, etc.
Depending on what system you're in and how granular the combat is, you could lump most in under a single generic "polearm" weapon or these functions could open up new combat options.

>the industrial mass-production and standardization that we're familiar with today didn't exist yet: each one is individually handmade, potentially bespoke to the personal preferences of whoever commissioned it
>they weren't all contemporary with one another: popular designs changed and evolved over centuries, in line with tactics and armor also changing and evolving
>all the classifications you see in RPGs etc are the product of 19th/20th century academic autists trying to categorize everything as deeply as possible, and do not necessarily reflect how they were considered in the period; as far as I understand, they would have likely just been viewed as different configurations of the same broad archetype and probably simply referred to as "halberds" or whatever their language's equivalent was, just as we today would understand that a rifle fitted with an aftermarket sight is of the same model as another rifle with an aftermarket foregrip
>>
>>98502740
>30 different variations
In a game, there's no point in making that many distinctions, but it can be cool to have variations based on how well they can hook, stab, cut, or chop, using respective damage formulas based on how the game in question represents each weapon's functions in general; the point of this being to give options to players based on how they want to play the game.
Or, if you don't like games, you can just do a "roll dice pool count successes" or "roll 2D6" and be done with it.
>>
I agree, on that note why are there so many swords? Just have one sword, everything else is unnecessary.

that's it, i'm making a food system for my homebrew. no ridiculous shit like breathing fire if you have salamander steak, more like you get bonuses to saves against disease or you recover more hp depending on what ingredients you eat

They're all used with very different fighting styles. For example the Bill is used to hack at enemy Shield formations and pull people forward by their Shields so they can be stabbed by the guy standing next to you.

>>
>>98502740
First, looks. Second, different purposes.
Poleaxe - mounted knights and destroying armor. Combined with spear and axe
Bardiche - cheaper to make and spear + axe
Bill - spear with special hook for mounted riders and perforater that can stop weapons sliding over the stick.
Glave - spear knife with piercing hook to stop weapons over the stick.
Partizan - sword on a stick.
Halberd - cheaper poleaxe variant with piercing perforater.
Pike - spear.
>>
>>98505712
Very good answer. And some devoloped along the evolution of armor and what troops you might encounter on the battlefield.
>>
>>98509409
The other night I dreamt I was in a castle hallway with some knights, and in front of me were some other knights who wanted to get past us, and I had my trusty pollaxe. It was a short dream but it was beautiful.

>>
>>98502740
I'd have a single class of Polearm weapons than attack modifiers to account for the different uses of each individual weapon.
One is good for tripping, the other gets bonuses against mounted foes, etc.
Modular design and all that.
>>
>>98502740
When I was 18, I borrowed every book in the town library on medieval weapons and made extensive notes on them. Gygax did the same, just at 38. I guess every manchild goes through this phase.
>>
>ITT Historylets not understanding that the medieval period spanned a thousand years and certain weapons did not coexist.
>>
>>98502740
Because they all exist, which means that they all exist. Next question.
>>
>>98503004
>pretending that D&D is the only system with this issue
>>
>>98502740
Some of them are combinations of different weapons so you can have advantages of them all (at a disadvantageous of weight and possible some motions?), like combining spears, bills, axes and hammers into one.
>>
>>98514501
> I guess every manchild goes through this phase.
I was 15 when I did the same
>>
>>98502740
There's at least three different length classes in that pic, from very short bardiche to pike. Poleax is a staff weapon with a head, the bardiche is war ax that speaks Russian. That pike could be 21', depending on unit and time period.
