>>98523159I actually think the world building has been occasionally pretty cool but... yeah... And I could cope by saying I really do like the focus on background and setting stuff (yes I am doing the "vistas" meme unironically) but I can't really use it as a defense of WotC because the lack of marketable storylines is OBVIOUSLY not for lack of trying. That goes for the last 18 years of Jace: the Gathering (which might actually wrap up in October?? imagine), but even includes the Weatherlight sagathe only time I remember anything about mtg characters getting even a little bit of attention outside of the MtG sphere itself (I didn't play back then) was when picrel got made, and even then the conclusion of that saga was MtG asking Steve Argyle to take the piece down from his own website because straight males were enjoying it too much... so yeah...

>>98525533they were thinking a 6/4 costs 6
There's literally a stack of basics from the precons that are just "take these" at the back of the store. People buy 10 for one card and dump all the lands.
who are the cutest BG commanders?
>>98525566dinaglissajenova
>>98525493>>98525530in Spain they do give them away in every small or big lgs I've been to
What are your opinions of precon only players? Why do I only play precons? Because it helps me navigate the unwritten social norms and stops LGS-creatures from bitching at me or mean-mugging me. Also I find deckbuilding in Commander to be impossible to grasp. In other TCG you deckbuild to win, in Commander there is this weird balance of building for "fun" or building to win. What is "fun" anyways? If I tell myself precons are fun then I don't need to spend more to enjoy the hobby.I like the precon with the Racoon.

>>98525530only ones I've gotten for free from American LGS' ive been to in a couple different states are ones from pre-releases or drafts that I chose not to put backlike I found a couple cool old forests I wanted so I was like yeah...I'll splash green...then kept themmost of the others its 10ยข for basics and 50ยข for full arts and $1 for foil full arts
>>98525678I get it, but as a personal misfortune I do enjoy deckbuilding. When deckbuilding I do build to win, just during play I have lower expectations. Depending on who/what power level you're dealing with, the right ratios of interaction/draw/ramp/bombs during construction will win, but part of that is also evaluating if your LGS is full of babies or not.

>>98525872see, and yet I don't remember that getting any relevance in the wider web or nerd culture, it's not like you see War of the Spark t-shirtslike, maybe there are just that many mtg players who watched the video?
>>98525678based if they hold their own, cringe if they demand (implicitly or not) that we stoop to their level. some precons definitely can tango in upper b3 or low 4 if piloted smart. a lot of the time a precon can be made into a standard b3 deck by just changing out the 3 stinker cards they always throw in and replacing most of the tap lands with basics.
>>98525919>and yet I don't rememberNobody elected you supreme chronicler.Have you ever thought that maybe (you)'re just retarded?
>>98525493>>98525530Out of the three LGS I play it, only one has the land-station 'out in the open' where anyone can grab at it. and even then, it is clearly intended for limited, and during their limited events they ask that people return the land. (but I have taken some before)The other two LGS near me have a land-station behind the counter that only gets deployed for limited events. But if you have purchased something recently, and pass a vibe check, they might give you a few basics for free if you ask nicely. One of these LGS used to have the land-station 'out in the open' 24/7 in recent memory, but stopped doing it for whatever reason (my theory is that draft night has less attendance).
>>98525941so actually it did make a big splash and break verifiably break mtg containment, and you do see people who wear WAR t-shirts and actually people really did like the story and characters of MID-VOW, is what you're saying. or...?

WOTC literally cannot make magic the gathering lore relevant to people because they are so cucked. Look at some of the most popular series ever, particularly animations from Japan, I'm not talking about their quality, but their sheer popularity. They are the antithesis of wizards of the Coast California orientation. Of vast majority of them are some dude, and his pals, going on a fight against unambiguous evil. Those dudes showcase the virtues of trust, friendship, personal growth, and confidence. And of course the females in these series are all conventionally attractive, and sexualized. Which is the coast are absolutely incapable of such a simple thing. They have infinite money, and they know the formula, but they refuse.

>>98526202"Generous" isn't the right word, more thoughtless. I get what he's trying to say, that a majority of the population would know something that's "relevant," hence the DBZ part. The problem is that threadshitter doesn't go outside and lacks a frame of reference for what the general population knows about. Almost anything relating to media and entertainment is going to lack a majority public awareness. Hell, I'd flat out disagree that "a majority" of people he could find on the street would have any awareness of DBZ (unless he's in Latin America, which would explain a lot).If I'm wrong about this, Pokemon would have a wider arrangement of monsters it uses in licensing, since it's one of the highest grossing franchises on the planet and thus by the precedent being made in your camp should have more eyes on its universe. Yet the only designs you see in the wild outside of a few Kanto mainstays are usually Eeveelutions.Let me repeat: the highest-grossing franchise on the planet has trouble getting a soccer mom to name one of its characters besides Pikachu and "that one my kid likes," and you fags are over here going "well Magic is irrelevant because most people don't know a character like Gideon (that's been dead for years)!"

If you missed the 2020 wealth transfer, you're likely to not make a substantial profit off of reselling your collection, at least not with the amount of effort that would take, just to make a small profit.

>>98526487nta but this is a very disingenuous argument to make by trying to equate knowledge gaps that an insulated demographic (suburban housemoms) has with literally the largest IP on the planet with the relative obscurity of Magic's IP even among people that play the game. It's a very big difference when a housewife can't name Eevee and an MtG player can't tell you anything Jace did in the story.
>>98526487>I've had coworkers who said Eevee was a Pikachu entirely seriously, and my girlfriend mixes up Zidane and Cloud Strife.>If you don't know the basic symbols of a character, and just know a name as "that guy from (X)," you don't know them.i assure you execs don't care what you actually think, all that matters is that you know the characters and that you know they're kid friendly enough to buy for your kid down the line hence profit, mtg could never

>>98526528>as long as someone buys is all that matters, who cares if they're outside the bubble or not?You buy a Smothering Tithe for $60.It gets reprinted.Demand increases regardless. Your Smothering Tithe increases to $75."My card made bank," you excitedly tell yourself. You cash out of the game, or at least try to. You have two choices:Sell to a card shop and get maybe half of your "investment" back, or go through the trouble of setting up an eBay account, listing the card, constantly checking if it has a buyer, taking maybe $70 to undercut everyone with established stores that's selling for $72, then going out of your way to ship the product. $10 for an hour of work.Individual card sales have poor margins unless you're consistently opening packs and every single time getting money pulls. What makes it sustainable for large stores is the sheer amount of sales being made to cover for that, and even then for a lot of stores Magic is a very small part of their profit margin, just a bellhop to get people in the door and buying shit like snacks and accessories.
>>98526603>You buy a Smothering Tithe for $60.imagine being wrong on the very first sentenceyou simply don't buy regular
>>98525776>and its really unusual to see a company hijack a player made formatthe RC sold out you dingus wtf is this schizo revisionismno matter how many conspiracies you think about what really happened in the jewlotus banning it takes two to tango and the RC simply sold out

>>98526553Is it anymore disingenuous than trying to interject in a conversation to move the goalposts from talking about normie awareness to knowledge of the specific plot. Most people in the game probably can't pinpoint what Jace is doing at a given moment, but they'll still know what his deal is. All you've really done is concede that using normie awareness in the first place is a retarded metric.>>98526554You're now going from "UB is okay because normies don't know Magic's characters" to "people don't recognize characters, they recognize brands."
>Magic's own original content is so culturally irrelevant that the best selling magic sets of all time have been crossover sets.

>>98526638> If you missed the 2020 wealth transfer, you're likely to not make a substantial profit off of reselling your collection, at least not with the amount of effort that would take, just to make a small profit.Actual slowness on your part.I'm talking about the original print, but even then the point stands. Getting a more expensive printing just highlights my pount.
>>98526679UB is okay because they have more recognizable names AND they are ultimately bigger brands, get it together you retard
>>98526682>I'm losing the argument so I need to vaguepost to fake outside interest.
>>98526688>aw you missed your chance therefore mtg isn't a worthy investmentactual retardation on your endyes mtg is a very risky endeavorbut the fact that you even concede that there was a cutoff point proves that yes there really was a point in time that you could've profited, all this proves is that diamond hands win baby
>>98526679No. Because the two are not the same. The fact even most active Magic players don't know what's going in the story indicates that the IP is comically weak. The fact that people who never played Pokemon can't name a specific Pokemon but can recognize the existence of one speaks to the IP's strength more than anything else. Jace's current role is closer to Ronald McDonald where he has lore but almost nobody cares about it and he's only succeeding at having a vague association with another product rather than anything tangible for 99% of people even ones that consume said product.
>>98526692>recognizable names

>>98526692that's literally why UB is NOT okay tho. they are invading my secrit little club and ruining it with wide appeal slop
>>98526707I fucking hate ub but you make some compelling arguments. The only cool magic characters are Urza and Yawgmoth because of the numerous atrocities they have committed and even those guys weren't very marketable to a broader audience.
>waa edhg must CONDONE proxies>waa edhg must CONDEMN proxiesyou've been arguing for years on repeat seeking the approval of people you'll never meet or play withhave you entertained the idea you might be trapped in some kind of purgatory?

I feel genuinely handicapped when I'm not playing with green in edh

>>98526703>>aw you missed your chance therefore mtg isn't a worthy investmentUh, yeah you fucking idiot. You don't buy into the peak unless you want to be left holding the bag.>diamond hands win babyOh god, IT actually is a brown NFTfag...>>98526707First, that wasn't the argument being made in the first place.Second, your goalpost shift isn't even a good argument. You can make the exact same argument about Luffy and One Piece. The exact same. And it doesn't work for the same reason - because you're shifting the focus of what's being asked from knowledge of a story to a specific snapshot of a character's role within a specific part of it, and you're not even giving a scope of what you would even count. Does someone not knowing Test of Metal but knowing Eldritch Moon count? What about Ixalan verses Dragon's Maze? These kinds of asks are kept vague ln your end so that you can preemptively rule out any counterexamples made.Third, you're a faggot.
>>98526749Uraz was an actual character, given pretty consistent personality, he wasn't perfect, but you could agree with his goals. Even if he himself admitted he would have been the bad guy had he discovered evil bad plane first. He also had the benefit of numerous novels that were more than simply "the gang goes to a world where everybody wears the color blue".The problem has been stated in the thread already, wizards of the Coast cannot produce a story that can capture an audience without fucking it up. Look at the first season of Avatar the last airbender, many people consider it perfect, and I have to agree. Now look at all the following content and how bad and widely panned critically it has been. Wizards has everything at their disposal to make a series on par with the first season of Avatar the last airbender. Instead they would instantly jump to Korra.

>>98526771Reddit also thinks you shouldn't berate people for playing UB.
>>98526774>ok fine you can still make a profit in mtg, just in convoluted ways>but ur an nftfag so yeahi love how you get triggered by diamond hands when you yourself use holding the bag, anyways thanks for conceding

>UM REDDIT WOULD AGREE WITH YOU ACTUALLY>UM NO BECAUSE REDDIT WOULD AGREE WITH YOU ACTUALLY
Proxies are a bad deckbuilder's crutch. If your argument is "my opponent has The One Ring so I need The One Ring, otherwise I'm losing to your wallet!" then you don't belong in EDH and never did.
>>98526774Believe it or not, most One Piece fans actually keep up with the story and can tell you how it developed. Because their form of vapid consumption is through watching/reading the story rather than gambling on cards. Most Magic players don't even know how the Eldrazi were defeated or if that even happened because the only representation it got on a card was Near-Death Experience which never happened in the story.
>>98526821You're right. Wallet-based gameplay never belonged in EDH so we should have banned The One Ring when it was first announced.
>>98526801Your argument is literally...>People should pay hundreds of dollars for easily-destroyed cardboard because, if I ever want to sell out, that cardboard can be sold to make the same amount of money someone could make by working a week at McDonald's. Buy the peak! Diamond Hands! TO THE MOON!
>>98526822>most One Piece fans actually keep up with the storyYou do not have a single metric to back this up.
>>98526828Also 100% true, not sure if that was an attempted gotcha but I agree the card should be banned.
>>98526822to be fair the eldrazi defeat was depicted, except it was on a shitty card so no one knew about itthis of course only highlights the folly of basing your story entirely on the card game and being incapable of delivering it on the mediums it should be delivered on like webcomics
