Damn it, missed linking in it the old thread by less than a minute.
How would you feel if your card game wanted you to not play the game?

>>98529469As a player at a much smaller store...I am concern.
>>98524574Those "Clash of" cards where one of the highlights of playing that everyone like. Clashing when it can go either way, and me using Vic to sway the clash was a lot of fun. I bought up about 3 boxes of MPG when they were around $50, plus 2 Smash Palace sets. So I think I can get a cube started and throw some other good guardian cards from other sets in there too.>>98524845Funny enough, one of my buds plays Bravo in SAge so we wanted to try something different, but I agree he is much better than the others. The other have more multiplayer flavor, while he is just throw dominate towers at you.
>>98529469So they pumped out a bunch of tourney award cards and didn't do their DD on which stores and now they realized they burned too much money and want to only give goodies to their goodboy storesAm i getting that right? I don't see how how that will fix the fake cards but ok

I looked up that Eikonic Kickstarter that was posted in the last thread and it made me realise how hyper-specific TCGs seem to be trending.Instead of an MTG card that says something like "When Mountain Dog attacks, it gains +2/+0", it seems like all the cards in new TCGs read like "When Mountain Dog is an Assist Unit for your Primary Attacker, Channel 4 to Attach Mountain Dog to your Combat Carousel then Retreat to Stand By" and every capitalised word is a proper noun with its own rules text.
>>98543069>>ask seller if he has more of a certain cardYou're asking for something that wasn't in the listing, so fuck off.

Hello,I’d like to try out riftbound but don’t really have any friends near me who play. I’m thinking of going to LGS nexus night but also don’t own any cards. When I used to play league 10 years ago my favorite champ was akali and would also like to try playing her despite people telling me she’s garbage.Does anyone have any cheap deck list that I could try and put together to learn? Most of the ones I looked up had 3 of the $70 kaisa card in it and I don’t really want to drop $250 on a deck when I don’t even know if I’ll like it.Would it be a waste of time to play akali though? People tell me she’s super ass
>>98541930Just finished up my shit SAge Vic deck.
>>98546606Akali is fine. I don't think she's tier 1 but could be tier 2, she's a hard deck to play. Here's a list I whipped up quick, it's around $50 total. It's probably not great, I've never played Akali, but it should be fine to learn with.In terms of upgrades Shuriken Flip and Falling Star are far more important than Kai'sa imohttps://piltoverarchive.com/decks/view/f99147a0-5eed-4c6a-9578-0e618d889241
>>98546318There was Rangers Strike two decades ago, and I think there was one or two during (American) Bandai's early licensed card game era.I need to go back and revisit some of those games to see if they had potential. Knights of the Zodiac, Digimon Fusion, etc.

sometimes I like to try to design a TCG and then after a few days I realise I've just stolen different aspects of different TCGs and slapped them together instead of making something actually unique.
>>98549660That's everything ever.Nothing new under the sun.
>>98549760It's normally like "It's MTG combat but with THIS mixed in" whereas all my TCG ideas are just taking shit wholesale. Just "It's Runeterra combat with Trap Cards from Yu-Gi-Oh" or whatever.
>>98549660>>98549769Obsession with "uniqueness" is a mistake but also, until you have a high-level vision, all your designs are going to be that sterile kind of "[EXISTING GAME]-BUT..."Pick one or two (really, even two might be too many) of your favorite mechanics, then try to figure out why you like them. Games are about feelings and moments as much as rules and competition.Once you have a boiled down idea for what kind of fun is behind your favorite/s, try to think about how you might structure a game so you can do that thing as much as possible. If you can work out a specific vision for what kind of fun you want to have, then when it comes time to flesh it out and you're "stealing" mechanics it's not going to be derivative.
>>98549882What if my favourite things are very different from each other? Like how I really enjoy Runeterra's focus on combat but also really love alternative wincons and stack-play in MTG?
>>98549888Maybe you can't have both, or maybe if you zoom out far enough on both you'll find the overlap and create something new. I don't know, I can't do your design work for you.
>>98549888In mine, there are alternative wincons but you don't generally get to set them up without participating in normal board-based gameplay along the way.
>>98548844That's very kind of you to offer. Any chance you're in the USA?
>>98550150I am indeed. East Coast. It won't get here for around another month so we'll have time to figure out how this'll work. I'm thinking email or discord for communication then PayPal for shipping payment.
>>98550114Are they really even alt-wincons then?
>>98550312Yes, you win through something other than just hitting them in the face and reducing their life to 0.
>>98549660Truely unique isnt sellable, the truely unique card games were in the 2000s and notice only Shitgioh, Shittymon, Shituel Masters, and Shitgic the Crappening are left standing

>>98552356If you think card games are over saturated then video games says "hold my catalog"What you more than anything else is passion, charm and ingenuity. If you have only two you still got a shot, but if you only have one on lock it might be over.
>>98552424What you need* My phone ate my swiped word
>>98552424>If you think card games are over saturated then video games says "hold my catalog"I'd argue the buy-in is so much more frictionless than your odds of building an audience with a digital indie card game are higher than a physical one. Especially in the freemium model.
>>98552424>What you more than anything else is passion, charm and ingenuityWrong. It's luck, connections, and predatory tactics.
>>98552424Comparing abundance in card games with video games is kind of stupid. >>98556780The funny thing about an artist making a tcg vs a game designer
why does it seem like everything's just an anime TCG these days? even kickstarter ones like that eikonic seem like they're just waifu collectors.
>>98559615There is a huge boom in IP centered TCGs right now, but likely they'll all die in a couple years.Basically companies realized they can get their fan base who don't play TCGs to buy a bunch of cards if they put their favorite characters on them, but they have no staying power like TCGs that aren't piggybacking off of IPs.
>>98538823I really like the art, so i will try it out on TTS. Will report later.
>>98559569What's funny?
>>98560655I would assume the thing he finds funny is that you're just drawing stuff without even having all your rules and mechanics decided.
I should give up on Lorcana and pivot to Riftbound, shouldn't I? My closest LGS lost the one competent staff member so the Lorcana scene is barely alive there, while the next closest gets 16+ Riftbound players every Nexus Night. It's also a more complex game, I just don't give two shits about League as an IP. Cards are so much higher quality, which is a plus to Riftbound. Art is better in Lorcana.
>>98548165more like playing has become secondary to the hobby now
>>98560655>having 1000 card ideas and 0 art skills
>>98559898I want to think that's true but then something like Altered didn't buck the trend despite stupid money thrown at it. Not that I expected it to last, more like all that the sunk cost could have kept it afloat longer. If anything, the 90's explosion and subsequent implosion proved the strongest brands will survive the cull along with the handful of non-IPs that managed to secure a solid base in the interim. I'm honestly more curious to see what WotC plans to do in the midst of their spiral. Feels like they're pull out all the stops too early (or perhaps they already see the writing)
>>98561405Idk I've never played Lorcana but Riftbound is good. Gameplay is unique and fun.Meta is pretty varied atm. Feels like pretty much any legend (barring the few that are strictly garbage like Poppy or Garen) can win.If you do I recommend Fiora as a first deck.

>>98562864I think it's fine as an idea just the practice was rough. Its too hard to get and they just didn't make any cards worth it. All the level requirements are so high you had to build your entire deck around it to make any use of them.I think if they'd lowered them a little bit or maybe made hunt units also gain xp on combat victory it would've worked out better. As is now Kha is the only legend xp legend worth a damn and even he doesn't really care about it too much since he does get the xp on combat victory.
>>98562938>As is now Kha is the only legend xp legend worth a damn and even he doesn't really care about it too much since he does get the xp on combat victory.I should rephrase this.Kha is the only xp legend worth a damn but he doesn't even care about the level cards or hunt. He just uses the xp to move units back and occasionally buff and he gets all his xp through his static ability.

I had a blast at 2D Con this past weekend. Nothing Condemned related, though. I was in the Indie Showcase with a new card game that I made called Boshin Sensou. Picrel. One guy came by and played FIVE GAMES over the course of the weekend. I showed my prototype to Carlos Ferro, and he straight up told me that this game is going to get printed with the way my prototype looks. He's not far off, I'm currently shopping it around to publishers and I have another phone call pitch meeting on Friday Night. So...fingers crossed?I'm also running a coupon code through the end of the month on the Juel Games store. Use code "2DCON" at checkout for 10% off your non-apparel order. Coupon code expires August 31st.>>98564316Have you tried Netrunner? Everything is PNP now, so the only sweats you get are in the hyper competitive scenes like GP-type events. But it's got the asymmetric deck building of the Decipher Star Wars games, which is why I brought it up.>>98564569There is no casual Riftbound scene in my area. It's all sweats practicing for GP events. YMMV, but don't get your hopes up...>>98564369The entire appeal of Worlds decks is that you can relive the experience of someone else. They can be fun, but you're right in that you can't use them for anything else. I agree with >>98564438. Buy a precon or starter. If there are duel decks, two decks balanced to play against one another, those are a fantastic option too.>>98559615Because licensed IP gives you brand name recognition. That alone is super useful! It gives you an established fanbase so you don't have to build your own. The only downsides are that it can potentially limit your design space, and when the license owner pulls that license, you're completely outta luck. See: Decipher with their Star Wars and Star Trek licenses or Fantasy Flight with Netrunner.

>>98564369Buy a precon. I'd recommend the Fiora one. It's not super strong but it's cheap to upgrade into something decent. In terms of packs your best bet would be to get 1 of the vaults. It's like 6 packs with a bunch of runes and some borderless tokens. I wouldn't really recommend it unless you just like gambling.Origins cards are still kind of spendy. Restock have happened but set 1 had a lot of staples so even commons and uncommons like defy or stacked deck are $5+ right now.The next set is at the end of October. Prerifts are great and I recommend doing as many as you can, especially as a new player.Lastly, it doesn't hurt to offer to buy some bulk from people at locals. Most players have more commons and uncommons than they know what to do with and are happy to sell them cheap or even give them away.

>>98564479looks like you need to make a white deck
>>98564863Guaranteed gibsmedats will never change your play patterns and are thus objectively inferior from a game design perspective to resources you have to draw and play.
>>98568179>Boshin SensouThe game is admittedly very magic-coded, but with enough changes to make it feel unique. Citizens (like picrel) are essentially manadorks and do pretty much all the lifting in your city. They draw cards, generate Ryo equal to their income (the number in the middle of the card), and build structures. Those structures bolster your defenses, protecting your city center (life) and serving as an extra shield. They can also buff your units or make you prickly. Warriors like the Mounted Archer and Young Samurai in >>98564748 guard your city and lay waste to enemy cities.Your overall goal is to reduce your enemy cities from 10 defenses down to 0. 2-4 players, ~30 minutes per player. That Friday meeting is the first one that I've had scheduled so far. If I can't find a publisher in a reasonable amount of time, I'll probably sell a P&P on my website until I can get a kickstarter to fire off...>VintageThe only Vintage I play is Base-Fossil Pokemon. Decks are sub $150, the format is easy to proxy if you can't get your hands on it, and it's fun as hell. It requires a lot more thinking about where the board is at, and it hits that sweet spot before Rocket's Sneak Attack upended the meta and made the game almost a guaranteed win for the first player.

Are all alternative TCGs leader based now? Seems that's the way it's going.
>>98576828It's an extremely easy way to limit deck building.
>>98576828>leader basedI hate this trendthe game I'm designing is character-based, but instead of relying on leader cards, which it could easily do, it uses the entire deck to represent the character and their abilities
>>98576853>It's an extremely easy way to limit deck building.>>98577333for example, my game uses a system inspired by miniature gameseach player's deck has two hard limits>30 cards>100 pointseach card has a printed point valuefor each copy added after the first, the point value of a card increases by 1so, for example, adding four copies of a card with a value of 2 points will total up to 14 points. Each card costs 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 respectively.I believe this system is optimal
>>98577409The Gwent system with cumulative tax?
>>98577599I guess, yeahthe more copies you add, the more expensive they getyou can't fill your deck with cheap, low-value cards, so you have to diversify your optionsoh, and, by the way, there's no limit to the number of copies you can add to the deck

>>98529444I started watching her anime to learn how to play because she's insanely adorable.Battle Spirits seems fun. Its combat is oddly similar to MTG.Does anyone in the US play it? I never saw any products at either of my local places.

>>98580163Japan's scene seems to be doing fine, the game itself will be getting a soft reboot with updated rules (though I think it will be released alongside the previous version?) and there's a new anime coming up too
>>98576828I've been thinking about this with the Capitalism TCG. At the moment the closest things I have to leader cards are Contract - Executives. Currently you can only have one copy of each in your deck because of their 'Unique' rarity, but there is no limit on the amount of Executives you can have in play or in your deck. They are convenient because you don't need to have any slots available like you would need for other money-making cards, but they are also vulnerable to anti-Contract cards which are usually much cheaper than their own cost.
My Echoes of Astra kickstarter stuff arrived this morning, I was gonna make a proper thread about it and share some stuff but I decided fucking around with making my images small enough for 4chan wasn't worth the effortI really only backed it for the artbook and have no expectation of this game finding any actual success but while I was at it I grabbed the duel decks as an addition to the base starter deck thing you get my default and also the keychains, time for it all besides the artbook to go in the cupboard and I never get any chance to actually play it against anyoneone of the first updates they put out after the kickstarter finished was about some changes to the card layout and I was both disapointed and baffled to see them move away from the MTG style system where you can be an elf warrior or a elf archer or a human warrior and make it like yugioh where you can be only be an elf or a warrior but not bothalso one region I don't remember which got fucked very slightly by having their packages have one less paper playmat than they were meant to
>>98581336Actually they may have changed their mind about the single typing, one of the duel deck face cards is a nekora vampire, maybe they are reserving it as a special mechanic for adjusting costings
>>98581461and looking through the full deck for the base thing I have an undead abomination, so yeah mostly single typing but a select few cards having dual

>>98544298>>98546003the EBR mana system is indeed pretty good (most of the rest of that game is boring af, but I digress) for basically the same reason Ashes mana is good. it lets you choose the exact ratio of magic colors you want, so you get the maximum deckbuilding freedom of a color mana system but without the shit-ass clunkiness of lands or land-alikes.>>98576828>>98576853I don't mind leaders if they're not restrictive. like if they're just a deck modifier. but most games have leader choice cut you off from a huge slice of the card pool, which is shit.>>98576853it's an extremely lazy way to limit deckbuilding. but publishers like it because if players aren't allowed to mix cards then they don't have to test those interactions. cuts costs.
>>98581870I'm making a game purely for myself that has cards equivalent to BuddyFight's Flags. They'll restrict you things like colors, types, archetypes or random things I like, or even do stuff like rewarding you for running 100 cards. There's a also a "Flag" that doesn't restrict you for anything. Like in BuddyFight, they modify your starting hand, life and stuff.
>>98581931Buddyfight seemed to have a good system in place with the size limit and freeform costs as well as a base charge system to pull from. Shame I never got to play it in its heyday.

I just hate it when it's possible to not have all the tools necessary to play a deck because the designers forgot they were making a card game and not an analog computer game.Magic is the worst about this.
>>98582811the problem with some jap devs is that they use the x100 and then have cards that fall between 0-99 without realizing they're essentially adding decimals to their arithmetic also besides the rule of cool I assume it's the equiv of them being used to 100 yen = 1$

>>98582408I don't understand what you are confused aboutnow that I look at this again the 2 cards across my 3 decks that do have dual typing do actually still fit this because both types listed on them are racial rather than class, maybe that's why they cut class types, so that dual race cards could fit both races in
