What's the best headgear against expected magical weapons? I may be going into battle against a more experienced sorcerer than myself, and while I already have my magic staff ready as a weapon, I don't know if I should go with a wide-brimmed hat, a hood, or skullcap.

magic tends to kill you in ways that cannot reliably be stopped by armor, like fireballs
so unless you have a hat that can stop magic directly, your best choice is to wear hats that boost your own magic power to kill the enemy mage before they can kill you
>>
Skull caps are awful. The camera crew keeps showing up in the reflection.

Hoods are for traveling inconspicuously. Wizard hat is for advertising. You're probably actually going to want both on hand.
>>
No self-respecting wizard dons a skull cap. That shit is for sorcerers, fucking warlocks, and forgive me for even mentioning them, Psions. Hood can be serviceable, if you happen to be participating in Ritual work, or expecting to have to accommodate some form of organized uniform for IFF purposes.

Barring those few exceptions, pull out that pointy hat, put on those robes, and polish the stick with a knob on the end. It's casting time.

>expected magical weapons
define "magical weapon" here? And the particular "type" of damage it would cause to get hit in the head?
>>
>>98530062
Obviously a crown.
You put magic jewels in it
You can shape it like a summoning circle or wards
It looks tastefully flamboyant

Pointy at or hood is best.

Whatever you choose, expect the sorcerer you're facing to try to set it on fire, so don't bring a gift from your mother or something you can't get off quickly and in a dignified manner.

So... if you had to prioritize one over the other, pointy hats or wide-brimmed hats? Why?

Magiclet detected. No one with a grasp of even cantrips should not know the answer to this question. The conical nature of the best casting headwear creates a sympathetic resonance on the mana field/weave that is instantly perceptible to anyone with even rudimentary magical acuity.

To even ask is to out yourself as a magical nonce.

"Pointy hats" are, for the most part, emergency shrouds for wizards who expect to get painted with an anti-magic emanation. You take a big bedsheet like cloth, you shrink it down, and you wrap it around itself on some fixed supports. Antithaums have pretty low penetration depth and are fairly light, so if you get a dose of 'em, that'll eat the shrink spell first and drop your safety cover before it takes all your other wards.

The "wide-brimmed hats" are hats made as hats. They have pointy tips as a fashion statement intended to evoke the above, because they know that is a thing Serious Wizards do. It's mall ninja shit for courtly types who are otherwise just casting Animate Pompadour all day.

They're also a part of academic attire

Friend, you're expecting to come into conflict with someone more powerful than yourself and what you are worried about is your /hat/?
And that you are even still debating the type of your hearwear speaks, to me, to the fact that you are way to early in your magical journey to mess with anyone.

Making a millinery choice is such a fundamental and early choice that I really hope that you are asking this now that you found some new level of power or delved so deep into an anciet arcana that you are revamping your whole outfit, casting off your old look.

In such a case, look into your heart and ask yourself these questions:
>"How evil am I?"
If you are evil (or consider yourself beyond such petty concepts as morality) you should consider a hood or skull cap. But the cap needs an evil goatee and/or snake theming to acompany it.

If you have not (yet) fallen to the Forces of Darkness, you can consider a wizards hat or hood.
One important thing to consider here is that those two options don't differ so much betweeen type but by the individual level of adornment. A hood intricately embroidered with stars and astrological signs is way closer to a sun-and-moon hat than to the wollen hood of a grey travelers cloak.

Anyway, all things being equal, I myself would go with a cloak and hood, high quality wool, dyed in a darker color thats relevant to your magic school, tradition or prefered element, with some tasteful embroidery.
It's a classic look for a reason, utulitarian without being too boring, easy to add on to as you journey deeper into arcane mysteries...

??? Wear an enchanted pendant? You must be an amateur if you think that the main body of wizarding is playing dress up.
