How would you put futuristic or fantasy materials in your game and what aspects of gameplay would it affect
>>98530626first of all: it depends on the settingreal life carbon fiber requires a lot of pre-existing engineering and chemistry knowledge to produce so a fantasy setting would have to be relatively advanced in those departments to be able to have the tech and know-how to make itif its only produced in small amounts using arcane magic rituals to convert graphite into an impossibly strong and lightweight material, then it wouldnt necessarily change the universe as a whole but instead exist as a strange an expensive unobtanium similiar to how mithril or adamantine is treatedthough its probably beat out by mithril in terms of material properties, carbon fiber could not make a decent sword while carbon fiber armor, while both strong and light, could still be destroyed by mundane means

In fantasy (and science fiction) there is already a wide range of fictional materials (or new uses for known materials) like mithril, adamant, orichalcum, dragon hide and scales, duranium, gold-pressed latinum, etc. or spider silk, a diamond/glass/golden sword, transparent aluminum etc.

It is strong for pulling forces aligned with its structure, when used in any other way it's fucking dog shit. It either holds up fine or shatters with zero in-between making it a material that just straight fails instead of weakening, flexing, even giving you a slight warning that it's near it's limit. I hate how people use it as some kind of standard for toughness. Fucking Avatar saying that Navi bones were essentially carbon fiber had me eye-rolling hard. I'm sure Cameron meant that to interrupted as they have light but very strong bones but instead it means Navi bones should be snapping like twigs constantly because Carbon Fiber is brittle as fuck when any impact is applied in a non-parallel direction. Lifting your forearm to direct a blow away from your face? Congratulations, your forearm just shattered. A skull with no strong parallel points given it's round structure? You bump into a low hanging branch and you got bits of bone in your brain.

When titanium or even steel starts to fail, you get signs, sounds, warnings, and warnings as clue you need to bug out because shits going to crush real soon. Carbon Fiber? It's either working fine or just shatters with zero in between state.

It's come down in price, it used to be over 30 times more expensive than high grade steel now it's around 10 times more expensive. Even then it's primarily application is aeronautics and space related stuff where, again, single direction tension strength and light weight are very important.
