>“Frank has always had a strong interest, a fetish of sorts, in black sexual stereotypes. Why would he spend so much time extolling the virtue of black sexuality if he disliked blacks? Makes no sense. What is his intent? The joy and delight inherent in sex. One must see the totality of these stories to appreciate fully their intent and idiosyncratic approach. He has other erotic art dealing with just whites, no blacks. A superficial and prosaic understanding is really worthless in appreciating this material.”

>I must have been too young. Worth reading?
I recently did a reread of the original trilogy. On the whole I'd say I had fun reading them again but they are a bit more junk food than I remembered them being and man o man did Hickman and Weis bring in their mormon influences. It's not like they're preaching or anything, mind you, and it only really stands ut in the first book but it's really obvious. But if you like this kind of fantasy adventure you can do a lot worse.

Well without getting too spoilery the initial quest hook is that the gods have all vanished and the heroes must bring the knowledge of the true gods back to the worlds as it is written on silver discs. I don't want to sound like I'm being dismissive because I do like the book but the first volume is literally the Book of Mormon but somebody invited Smaug.
>>
>>98569034
>the first volume is literally the Book of Mormon but somebody invited Smaug
a notable improvement
t. also read the original trilogy as a kid, it was fun and was my first indepth look into fantasy
I'm torn on trying to re-read them since I'm afraid they will shatter my rose-colored nostalgia glasses

>>
>>98569034
Well, gods abandoning us is practically a universal theme.

The Native American analog cleric girl being marked as special because she's born with blue eyes and blond hair is also pretty Mormon-y.

There's a Mormon energy in books I can always identify. I can usually clock it(eg with Sanderson) even if the author isn't outspoken like Orson Scott Card is. I can also tell when a book has been written by a fellow Catholic. Feels good to not be autistic.
>>
I love this era of art. Anybody have any monk-related art?

There's something I just find heartbreaking about 80's and 90's era DnD art as someone born in the 2000's. Like you could just have people over to your house to fight some orcs and dragons without everyone wanting to bitch about how they can't have fun unless they're playing a pansexual tiefling bard. And everyone would pay attention because smartphones hadn't been invented yet.
>>
There is something about this style between the colour pallet and level of detail that makes me feel nostalgic even though I was a kid to young to know about any of it at the time.
>>
>>98576513
everything has a price
we didn't really even realize what we were losing with the advent of smartphones
or the proliferation of easily accessible internet around the world for that matter...
This might be a localized thing, but the "nerd" culture I grew up with consisted of highly intelligent, highly creative people who actually put in effort letting their imagination run wild with their friends of similiar characteristics just to have some fun.
The whole concept of ready-made adventures and "ongoing support" for what is for all intents and purposes a complete product like a TTRPG has always been extremely alien to me. The whole TTRPG space has been inflitrated by corporate interests to a disgusting degree. Luckily nothing is stopping me and my friends from playing like we want to.
I don't even really know what the point of my post is because it's not really even nostalgia. Maybe just that things really used to be different and that we have actually lost something of value as the price for the current levels of convenience. And I think it has been a worse deal than it seems.
>>
>>98576978
>the proliferation of easily accessible internet around the world for that matter
Gonna make a hot take and say it wasn't til we hit web 2.0 that shit nosedived hard.
>>
>>98577097
Early internet was terrific. It was a wide collection of people and information finding ways to make their voices heard. Then at some point everything coalesced into the same handful of websites and corporate homogeneity took over. In the old internet if you didn't like something or someone you'd just look for a different hole to fit in at. Now everyone has the same voice and have been corrupted to call out any gainsayers as being toxic for not towing the corporate line.
>>

>>
>>98561554
>frazetta was a closet cuck
Disgusting
>>
>>98577097
>>98577785
Earlier internet was "bigger" but also had a more uniform userbase in a sense:
the technical literacy required, access to stable high-speed internet and the specialized sites for different subjects of interest all acted as very effective filters. Astroturfing, baiting (or trolling) and other disingenious behaviour was both rarer and much easier to spot, and also to regulate.
Let's also address the elephant in the room: geographic differences in levels of internet access - yeah that changed things when it evened out.
We've literally got the shit version of the internet now, mostly, kinda like in some cyberpunk dystopia. The difference is that instead of at least being cool in exchange for being oppressive it's just lame and gay for the most part.
