So I have found some time to run a grudge match. As anons asked for it this time it'll be set in 3067 with Marians versus the Magistracy. It'll be ran via megamek to ensure no user bias on a 32x34 map. This one is a bit different from last time I've ran it so please read carefully as it has some special instructions to follow. I am also not intending to do this live as in cover each turn in full this time.

Background: Its the late 3060s and the Marians have been chancing their luck against the Magistracy of Canopus. Most raids have been successful as the Magistracy has had its eyes mainly on the NCR so the Marians are expecting relatively green and inexperienced forces. This raid however they are unaware they are about to clash against veterans from Operation Bulldog. Will the Marians succeed and return home with valuable slaves and plunder or will the Canopians hold their ground?

Attackers: Marian Raiding Party
Maniple - 10 mech slots

>How to roll
Put “dice+8d6” without quotes. First two values determine weight. Second two values determine mech. Remaining values treat as a 4d6 for a typical pilot roll as per pic.
>Where's the RAT?
See the following post. I'll put an example for a mech and character roll on this as well.

Defenders: 1st Canopian Cuirassiers
Nova – 5 mech slots, 5 elemental slots

>How to roll
For a mech roll a “dice+2d1000” without quotes to determine mech, 1-300 is light, 301-700 is medium, 701-900 is heavy and 901+ is assault. For your character skills see attached pic however add a +2 to your gunnery roll and a +2 to your piloting roll.

For an elemental use attached pic and add a +2 to your gunnery roll and +2 to your piloting roll. Piloting roll will be translated to anti-mek skill. Each character is essentially a squad leader.
>Where's the RAT?

>>98543807
As I don't fancy giving the Marians all 3025 trash I'm using the RAT from field manual updates. How it works is that you roll an 8d6 where the first two figures are the weight, second two figures are mech and rest are for character skills. For the first roll anything between 2-4 is a light, 5-8 is medium, 9-10 heavy and 11+ assault.

For example. I rolled a 2, 3, 6, 6, 6, 6, 2, 5 in a practice. This means I got a 5 which means my mech weight is medium. Followed by a 12 which means its the Vindicator 3L. Then I got another 12 that means my pilot is elite. Then the 2 means my gunnery skill is 3 and 5 means my piloting skill is 2. Therefore I'd put this as:

VND-3L Vindicator, “Posca” 3/2

This is an example character by the way I won't use them unless there are slots leftover after a week.

FAQ
>When is the cutoff and when does this start?
Cutoff is next Friday and I'll run this next weekend.

>Can I reroll my mech/characters?
Mech no. Character yes but you must keep the result. Try to keep this to a minimum.

>What if there are extra slots available can I submit more than one?
Preferably one slot per anon however if there are slots by mid next week feel free to roll another. Otherwise I'll roll the empty slots myself.

>I'm a namefag can I submit myself as a character?
No. This is to make the focus about the character not the person and part of the fun is meant to be inventing someone.

>Some of your maths doesn't seem to add up?
I have fudged the numbers slightly to make it more interesting

>Is this meant to be fair?
No, but I have tried to playtest a little to see if I can make it a little more balanced.

Rock and roll. Legionnaire Larry Lipscomb was found on an abandoned periphery colony world by Marian forces during exploration of dead worlds rimward of the Hegemony. The men who picked him up were looking for SL caches of germanium to relive a piece of their legendary beginnings. Captured and enslaved, his natural piloting aptitude quickly moved him from piloting constructionmechs to the gladiator pits. Needing an extra hand, the current raiding party called him back from the planet Hardcore to lend his mech and skills.

To his eyes, he's living a real life isekai adventure, and he's off to do the first thing from his forgotten world's own LN's, get a genuine beast girl slave, whether she exists or not. Outside that, everything he loves is more mech with more gun.

Mirabelle Ren isn't the best Mechwarrior: she herself admits that her skills are merely average, and her knack is more in the technical side of things. If it's the latter I can roll up a Canopan mechwarrior.
Also did I read that correctly that we're using the Smoke Jaguar RAT for the Canopans?

From what's come up in the big ol' interview that Russ Bullock did over on NoGutsNoGalaxy, Clans was mainly fucked by being on gamepass which gave them basically nothing. MW5M gets them recurrent spending over and over every DLC because there's a solid core of players in the tens of thousands who just keep on coming back for it.
The quality or style of Clans didn't affect too much, people played it, but they mostly played it on gamepass and were done with it. There's a few other factors in there like timing of release and advertising not being enough but the big one is simply it was on gamepass so hardly anyone bought it in the first place, leaving no install base, so there wasn't any point continuing expansion releases for it for people to go back for.

People showed big time for the clans stuff in Mercs as well so it's not that clans themselves are a problem either.

>Legionnaire Gaius Maximus Chaddus
>Victor
>Regular xp
>3/5

The filter had only slipped for a moment but it was enough for Legionnaire Gaius Maximus Chaddus to learn the truth. The canopian catgirl he had spent months e-dating was revealed to be nothing but a 400lb male neckbeard covered in acne and cheeto dust. Gaius had been catfished for the third time. Tears streamed down his face as his thoughts drifted to the cruel mockery he'd endured from his fellow mechwarriors. They had called him an idiot for thinking that a beautiful catgirl would be interested in a minor noble like him. They told him that he should settle down and marry a femboy like every other self respecting heir to a Marian house. But Gaius refused to listen. Now their words struck deep into his broken heart like an ac/20 coring the central torso of a centurian.

With his family's reputation in tatters Gaius had no choice but to withdraw from public life. After countless nights spent hiding in the basement of his mother's villa sustained only by the chicken tenders she prepared for him he recieved a piece of anonymous intel. The same neckbeard who had catfished him was sighted answering a call for canopian mercenaries in a comnet channel called "/btg/". No doubt continuing the charade by using the engagement to find other other innocent Marian bachelors to prey upon.

A whirlpool of emotions swirled through Gaius as he enlisted to attack on the opposite side. Anger... Shame... Disgust... and something he didn't want to admit to himself. Warm memories of late night rendezvous online and a longing for the intimacy he'd lost. Why does he still have these feelings towards her in spite of everything that happened? Gaius knew that the only way to learn the answer was to climb into the cockpit of his ancestral victor and face down his former love in the fire of battle.

Republic, disarmament? No such thing. In fact all world's had to dramatically militarise against the rise of possible WoB and clan raids anywhere at any time.

>4/6 pilot
Well it could certainly be worse
Mechwarrior Chester Smoke Jaguar had always felt more comfortable standing his ground instead of trying to outmaneuver his foes. This made him an adequate gunner but a rather inflexible mechwarrior. During the battle of Luzerne, this unfortunate habit led him to be taken captive by the SLDF forces, and eventually passed off into Canopian custody.
As a bondsman, Chester begrudgingly carried out his duties for his new masters (mistresses?) in the MAF. His attitude shifted one day, however, when he happened to accompany his makeshift star-mates to a Canopian den of iniquity. Therein he happened upon one of the Canopian catgirls, whose furred portions happened to have the coloration and patterning of Clan Smoke Jaguar's eponymous feline.
Chester has never been the same, and is now one of the Magistracy's most loyal warriors. He will stand and defend this paradise against all barbaric raiders who might wish to steal its delicious fruits.

So if most of the warships yards were destroyed durring the Jihad, why none of the Successor States jumped pocket warships wagon, especially dracs and lyrans since they've had to deal with Clans warships all the time? Something like mobile missile boats equiped with few salvos of capital missiles lurking near the jump points to engage arrived warships or cargo ships with equipment (since even clanners cannot attach a McKenna class to each convoy):

Feels like cope. Clans has pretty poor reviews because it's MW5 without the good bit and everyone had to start modding again from scratch, and these games are very firmly not worth playing without mods. Gamepass didn't make the people who did buy feel conflicted about its quality.

To be frank they just shouldn't have made it and they should've seen this coming, at best this should've been a standalone dlc campaign in mercs. It's very obvious that the mercs structure keeps 5 alive and if you take it out you're just rawdogging their shitty premade missions with zero difficulty balance back to back. Though it's not even just the formula, people were criticizing the writing and the mission structure as well. It's genuinely just a big fumble.

You left out how much of a mess it was at launch too. There's only so many times you can put up with the game crashing in the same mission before you've just had enough and uninstall it. I've heard it's better now and I even went back once to try it again and I got past the level that kept crashing, but I just don't really care about the game anymore.

You ain't gonna catch me defending them, PGI are just a pretty shitty company, this has been apparent for so many years. They really do put in minimum effort, and blame it on the economics every time. Other studios that actually give a shit have done way more on less even without burning themselves out.
I mean to sum it up in a single choice they made: the fact that they picked only a tiny deviation away from John Smith as the name for their main character and gave him the most generic dead dad plot going in MW5M shows how completely fucking devoid in imagination and how risk adverse they are. Fucking Spectre from MW4M has more going for him and he's barely anything but a voice.

The only reason they're doing a Mech Commander next (all but confirmed), other than yet more expansions for Mercs, being inevitably Operation Bulldog and maybe serpent at a push or they might just skip to fedcom civil war because fuck it serpent would mean moving away from what they've already built for a bit, is because doing an RTT is really, really fucking cheap and there's basically no competition in the market. They can re-use everything, make it yet another mercs system, it won't need to have any kind of improved graphics (not that anyone is running better hardware anymore), and they can churn it out quickly. They are lazy, dispassionate, slopmongers. And it'll sell because the same idiots that buy every mech pack for MWO and day 1 buy every DLC for MW5 will also turn up and buy it. And their minimum viable product wages will be good for another couple of years.

That would be a clusterfuck of epic proportions. PGI can't into scripting or mission design. Designing a good RTT requires someone with good imagination to design levels and campaigns, PGI has demonstrated repeatedly they have nobody with that capability working for them.

>>98546586
40 and 60 tons aren't as cursed as you'd think especially once lostech is involved. 40 tons in particular the curse is just having very bad unoptimized designs since if you made say a 6/9 40 ton Wolfhound it'd be pretty damn strong.
Though if looking to decide on a cursed assault tonnage and assuming introtech for arguments sake then I'd say 90 tons is where it gets a bit sketchy. You can make a 4/6 85 ton mech with reasonable loadout options, you can't do that for 90 tons. You can also make a 3/5/3 85 ton mech with the same available tonnage as a 3/5/3 90 ton mech since 90 tons where you start paying 2 tons per jump jet. So yeah 90 tons is where the maths means it would be more efficient to either go lighter or heavier depending on what you want to do with it.

I'm in the "own all the DLC for 5, never played Clans" crowd.

MW:5 has a pretty robust mod community that generally makes stuff that can work together that keeps up with updates, uploads to the Steam workshop for maximum ease of use. It's a very cozy ecosystem and I was going to wait for Clans to mature somewhat before jumping over there.

Obv that never happened, Clans did not bring anything really besides the first game to feature anything more advanced than 3040s IS tech in 20 years and had a bunch of stumbles early on. The inclusion of boss fights was really awful. The engine that was supposed to be better managed to be worse than the duct taped together abomination that 5 is currently. It would have basically depended on getting drive by purchasers / console kids except it's also the most autistic and unrelatable shit you could start someone off with in the lore.

Once they officially moved the timeline on 5 to the actual Clan Invasion it was pretty much a dead game. People really just wanted Clan tech anyway

Marc McDonald came fresh from Canopian space with a bounty and his disassembled 'mech stashed in a cargo hauler.

Nobody asked where he got his 'mech. Nobody asked about the bounty. He even dodged being sent to a penal unit by volunteering for a front line mission right back where he had come from. Some people would have called him an outlaw before but to him it didn't look too different from the other side. Yeah I can't wait to see it drop and it literally just being Mechwarrior 5 missions from a remote camera view. Because it's the laziest most obvious thing for them to do. That's all they'd see it as, just boiled down to simplicity: go over here shoot this thing, go over here, shoot this thing, the mission generator put some units in the way along the way. That's all it is right? Pacing? Varied objectives? Mixed goals? Proper map design that lets the player and the enemy units operate in the way you want them to? Nah fuck it pump it out the random generation machine.

Nice. Pic is a little blurry but your white looks good. What's your process? Planning on painting up some Lyran Guards and Comstar myself but I'm worried my white is going to look like shit.
>>
>>98551839
Off-white over light blueish-gray basecoat. I've normally used Ulthuan Grey for white, as it's close enough to true white while being easier to paint, but I think GW has fucked up with their paint formula since recently I've had issues with the paint and medium separating in the pot and the paint having very poor coverage. It worked fine here, but the FWL mech I painted a few weeks earlier with the same paint required so many coats to get any coverage that it obscured some of the details.
Lyran Guard isn't too bad to paint since you only need to do about 1/3rd of the mech in white, and it's pretty easy to just drybrush the right side and then fix the border between the blue and white.
>>
>>98551961
>Ulthuan Grey

>>
>>98551982
>>98551961
unless you have it brand new never been touched, a whole bunch of GW's paints need to be shaken like its a baby you hate and are trying to kill, because a bunch of them are all fucked up like that and you have to pretend to be a paint mixing machine to semi- unfuck them.
so.. uh... enjoy looking like you're having a furious wank shaking gw's shitty pots.
>>
>>98551961
Thanks. Only recently got back into mini painting after a decade or two out of it. So far I've painted up a company of "my guys" that had white "heads" and "hands", but I used a black primer and tried to build up to white. Ended up having to do multiple layers of army painter Matt white which left the paint looking thick, flat and impossible to highlight. Feel like it stands out too much against the red that most of the models are that I was able to highlight and get a bit of a gradient on. I'll try a lighter primer and base coat when painting my lyrans.

>>
>>98552012
I actually used black primer for my Lyrans, since the 2/3rds of the mech that is blue works better with black primer. I just painted a light grey (specifically blueish gray, since it's a "cold" shade that works well with white) on the white side before starting to apply the white.

I think a serious part of the problem is that the average gamer wasn't born yet the last time there was a game in this setting that featured the Clans in any form, and we haven't had a game where they player was a Clanner since Mechwarrior 2 released over 30 years ago.

We've got a whole generation of fans who have only seen the setting in the context of the late Succession Wars era that both the Battletech strategy game and the Mechwarrior 5 base game were set in. For an audience like that, the Clans are just a really weird plot twist that comes out of nowhere. It's like, "Who are these autistic furries and what are they doing in my gritty mercenary game?"
>>
>>98552004
Throw a bb or glass bead in them and use a tattoo ink mixer that costs like $15. I have to do that with my paints I don't use much like once a year and add a little water. I actually have some Ral Partha paints from the 90's that are still good. They made my absolute favorite purple and yellow ink wash.
>>
>>98552572
To be fair it's more like writting problem, because Clans campaigns really lacking some time to dive into the whole Clan thing, like trials,inter-caste interactions, banters, etc.
>>
>>98552572
>We've got a whole generation of fans who have only seen the setting in the context of the late Succession Wars era
That does tally up with my experiences of introducing people to tabletop. A lot of them start with introtech then go off on their own to experiment with 3039 before bouncing hard off Clans as they don't like the way it changes the game outside the few who are the equivalent of "that guy" whom naturally can't wait to stack as many Clan pulse boats they can.

PGI has it in their mindset they can get the MW2 audience while forgetting that audience is made up of mainly dead or dying Boomers. There are a lot of references in their games to stuff that happened in sourcebooks but again they also forget the average person who played a MW vidya title has never read a sourcebook in their life. So they end up producing shovelware slop which tries to survive by key jangling "remember this character and event?" which very few people will understand and get.
>>
>>98552685
>don't like the way it changes the game outside the few who are the equivalent of "that guy"
That's really a flaw inherent in the Battletech ruleset and has been a source of controversy since like 1990.

The tonnage, heat, and damage of weapons was balanced based on single heatsinks. Once you add double heatsinks to the mix, whether Clan or reintroduced Lostech, you suddenly create a game in which some weapons are just plain better than others in a way that isn't reflected in their cost.

Not helped by lasers being even more clearly superior in the games than they are in the tabletop, which is saying a lot. Clan invasion is a pretty terrible upgrade to the gameplay side of the tech in the videogames, it's just rich get richer.

1st Succession War burned down the library. 2nd pissed all over what remained. In terms of wholesale destruction the 1st was way more devastating. In terms of being able to recover and starting the true downward spiral of lostech then the 2nd was more devastating for humanity as a whole as although by the end of the 1st Succession War the Inner Sphere had been brutalized they still had the ability to recover what was lost and were in the process of rebuilding before the 2nd kicked off.

Honestly I feel the current time period (3152, third star league) is a great period for a mech warrior game with all the different sides and minor skirmish scale conflicts. Personally how I would have it set up
>Custom character creation like the Paradox published battletech game, can have parents be clan descended
>Customizable starting mechs through a point buy system vaguely analogous to BV (obviously not 1 to 1 price)
>Flashpoints and campaign scenarios are built around you picking sides and effecting the outcome of conflicts within the inner sphere

It is weird how the mech warrior games still don't have customizable characters and background especially when shit like character appearance and gender plays no role in a game like mercenaries (at least clans it would be weird of your character was a mandigo sized black man surrounded by normal whiteish people who are purportedly your full blooded siblings).
>>
>>98556711
His only real mistake was trying to sell our the other periphery states to try to get Kerensky to bend the knee, both because Kerensky would never but also he alienated the Periphery when they inevitably found out and it was the Periphery backing Kerensky that gave the SLDF the needed base to actually win the war. Even the RWR ended up being fractured between Amaris' yes men and RWR citizens pissed off about everything, with the latter oftentimes joining hands with the SLDF.
If Amaris hadn't tried to a pointless backstab, the SLDF forces under Kerensky very likely would have floundered and been slowly ground down via attrition, and Amaris night have genuinely won.
>>
>>98556711
Kerensky was the biggest retard in the setting at least for actions. Leave an impressionable idiot in the care of a psycho who hates the Star League, leave to fight a distant war and withdraw forces from the core of the Terran Hegemony to do so, and after everything is settled just fucking off from the Inner Sphere instead of trying to preserve the Hegemony or playing kingmaker.

Hell if Kerensky was willing to play kingmaker they could have probably just destroyed the other four great houses and had a truly united Inner Sphere.
>>
>>98556763
>, leave to fight a distant war and withdraw forces from the core of the Terran Hegemony

For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure Clan sibkos can have pretty different looking people in them because of how the genetic engineering process works. Isn't the deal that instead of having two "parents", they're all made up of DNA from a bunch of different people?
>>
>>98556840
I always assumed it was just two shared parents eg. A Ward-Kerensky sibko might be made up of the progeny of Vladimir Ward and Natasha Kerensky instead of any combination of Wards and Kerenskys.
>>
>>98556747
>It is weird how the mech warrior games still don't have customizable characters and background especially when shit like character appearance and gender plays no role in a game like mercenaries
They wanted to do it for MW5 Mercs. They basically abandoned it at some point during development. Can still see references to it cause Mason is in fact classed as a girl according to his character card in the game files.
>>98556763
>Hell if Kerensky was willing to play kingmaker they could have probably just destroyed the other four great houses and had a truly united Inner Sphere.
Then you'd probably get Herbs nightmare scenario aka Empires Aflame where the Terran Hegemony didn't fall, tech did advance but there's no Clan tech and most horrific of all, every faction still has some LAMs and warships.
>>
>>98556953
LAMs are destined to be either inferior to battlemechs, or render them obsolete completely.
>>
>>98556953
>Can still see references to it cause Mason is in fact classed as a girl according to his character card in the game files.
Are you misgendering Mason just because he was assigned female at birth? It doesn't matter what his records say, what matters is Mason's true gender identity.
>>
>>98556953
>Can still see references to it cause Mason is in fact classed as a girl according to his character card in the game files.
I assumed that was because the protagonist's gender was changed at some point in the development. The MWO promo items for MW5 preorder with the protag merc company logo refer to the unit as "Chloe's Cavaliers", while in the game they're called Nick's Cavaliers. That suggests to me that the original protagonist was a female mechwarrior called Chloe, but it got changed at some point, leaving the original gender of the character still in the game files.
>>
>>98556840
Clanners do have a "genefather" and "genemother", though the terms only indicate which donor's DNA was used for which gamete. Theoretically the same person could be both the genefather and genemother, but they generally prefer to mix the genes of two people to create new genetic combinations.
I don't remember if all sibko members have the same geneparents, or just the genemother. Bloodnames are traced based on the genemother so that's the name that is used for the sibko, but I'm not sure if the genefathers can be different between sibkin.
>>
>>98556991
There's leftover entries for a gender toggle where players could have made their character male or female. So being able to pick your gender at the very least was on the table. Probably was scrapped mostly out of financial concern i.e. having to pay two voice actors.
>>
>>98556964
LAMs we're still experimental enough, that a timeline where the SLDF didn't fall likely would have had the Terrans keep experimenting with the concept long enough that by the current period Mechs would be basically be Armored Cores.
>>
>>98556964
I mean you can already see this. The mechs aren't getting that much tougher but they are getting lighter and faster, and accurate enough to fire on the move. It's steadily reinventing LAMs from first principles, especially whoever invents overed boost.
>>
>>98557044
We've already seen glider protomechs like the Svartalfa work in universe. All it takes is one faction wondering if you can do LANs without the transformation gimmick and suddenly the battlefield is full of Battlemechs gliding around like they're Gungriffins.
>>
>>98557008
> Bloodnames are traced based on the genemother so that's the name that is used for the sibko, but I'm not sure if the genefathers can be different between sibkin.
Unless new warrior made out of genes of the Bloodhouse founder.
Or freeborn descendants like Phelan.
>>
>>98557008
My question is do they have sibkos where both parents share the same bloodname? After all actual genetic separation could be several generations between people with the same bloodname.
>>
>>98557009
It also means if animate a cutscene you have to do it twice for every part Mason is in.

Does anyone know if a formula exists for converting TW aerospace fighters into aerospace BSP Assets yet?
Looking to test them out for integration into a campaign where we already have aerospace fighters. Right now they're just chucks of BV to be converted into strikes, but the assets seem like a good low-overhead way to give them some more flavor and interaction with ground units. So I need a way to convert units that don't already have cards provided with the playtest.
>>
>>98559155
I don't think the formula even exists to turn tanks into assets yet. At least not publicly. Assets are already an iffy proposition, but the lack of hard rules to make them is stopping a ton of players from even considering the idea.
>>
>>98559264
hmm. perhaps I'll have to look into a way to adapt the abstraction of the aerospace mapsheet to work with TW record sheets. that would probably end up being easier.

>>
>>98557117
There’s a case in IlClan recognition guide 7 where two hell’s horses warriors of bloodname Cobb serve together, and one is specifically the genefather of the other, so unless horses disregard the usual genemother bloodname only rule, that means that sibko was all Cobb.
>>
>>98559424
As far as I know, the only clan to change up that rule is woof, and only very recently because they literally couldn't scrape up enough maternal geneheritage warriors to fire off a bloodname trial across the whole clan. They let a warrior legalese around it by claiming that because the very first set of bloodname trials allowed the participants to choose either maternal or paternal, any warrior ever *could* have chosen to trace paternal, they just... didn't. This was backed by the loremaster and khan because they really wanted the "moral" win of still being able to fire off at least one blood trial.

I don't have the first clue what the BV is. It's a campaign, so I don't really care: the OPFOR is the OPFOR and they can deal with it. Balance is for tournaments and LGS pickup games with strangers, and both of those are the *worst* way to play BattleTech.

We start our games at ~10am on Saturdays, and they run until ~530pm, with a 45 minute lunch break. This game got 13 turns in, and ended with all of 4 Lyran units left on the board, but the Warhammer and Zeus were retreating back to their board edge, so it was a clear decision. Keep in mind my "low population" days have 10 players on the board, and high population days can push 20.

Incidentally, this is the next scenario. The PCs were complaining that they expected more Lyran Wall of Steel stuff on this contact so I adjusted the OPFOR generation in AtB a little bit. To make them happy.
they are not happy
>>
>>98560440
Anon, you are talking to the GM of what is basically a group of professional battletech players, half of whom got made demo agents so they would stop winning all of the events at gencon all the time. They know the rules better than the devs. Their resolution time per unit is probably 1/10th of what yours is because they've all been playing for 20+ years. Don't compare your home games to what NEA posts. Use it as inspiration to work towards and understand it's going to take a decade of regular play to get there. I do mean a decade. It took me 5 years to get my group to stop pickup play and start a campaign, and we had multiple campaigns crash out. It's been 12 years since we started, and we're only finally now playing games that approach this size and speed of how the Cincy boys play.
>>
>>98560639
Nta, but do your players roll up a single mechwarrior or a lance?
>>
>>98561096

The format of the campaign is that each player is responsible for the complete upkeep, logistics, and maintenance on a single lance, with no crossover of parts or personnel between lances. The Unit CO handles support forces and unit-level issues (DropShips, ASFs, administrative personnel, etc.). The classic problem with a full AccounTech campaign is that one poor bastard gets stuck with the maintenance and logistics for the entire unit, and burns out. Aside from scheduling issues, that kills more campaigns than anything else. So this solution has seems to solve that problem.

Give me a bit and I'll upload the campaign ruleset to somewhere and link it. I miss being able to attach PDFs.

Relax, my man. Nobody's offended by the existence of BV. If I'm offended by anything, I'm offended by the people who think that games must be balanced in order to be acceptable or fun, and while BV does enable those people, that's not the fault of Battle Value for existing.
>we auditioned a new player a few months back. Since we play in the home ballroom of one of our players, we vet people before letting them join, so run them through a couple of solo games to get to know them and make sure they know how to play first. Dude got mad in the LGS, and made a bit of a scene and insisted that the game was unfair because his side was at 3989 BV in a 4000 BV game, when the other force was at 3993 BV. We did not move forward in adding him to our group.

>>98560440

>>
>>98561272
What the fuck? I'm generally pretty strict about BV limits (if we're playing at 8000, 8001 is a no go) but I also tend to be 50-100 under the line anyway. How would you even close such a small gap? Completely rework your entire force by changing variants and piloting skills until you stumbled on a perfect match? Add a single squad of low skill rifle infantry?

>>98560440

We usually play Company V Company games. 3 x merc players (roughly a lance each) vs DM with Opfor. Roughly speaking 12-15kpts value in a campaign game. Takes us anywhere from 6-8 hours depending on how long my teamates dither about making fucking decisions. Yes I care that it took you ten fucking minutes to figure out where you were going to move that Atlas. ITS GOT THREE FUCKING MP AT A WALK IT ISN'T THAT FUCKING COMPLEX REEEEEE.

We'd probably get it done faster if they could make a choice worth a damn.
>>
>>98561550
I can do company v. company against my bud in about 5 hours with Helm tech. Grogtech drags out longer and clan v. IS is about the same because of trying to abuse the better weapons and protect the lighter armor for the BV. However, I'm the one making all the decisions strategically, so probably save some time there. Counting hexes is still what takes me the longest. I can eyeball it, but I have to count when a hex or two matters in a range bracket for firing phase.
>>
>all the shortest paths to the target hex are illegal for the jumping ’Mech
When is this true? Can't really picture this condition in my head
>>
>>98561580
Your height capable by jump is only equal to your total JJ movement. If you have to cross a height 12 mountain with a 5/8/5, that's illegal. Or when you would hit a cavern ceiling. There's some nasty Solaris Maps like this and Devil's Bath IIRC.
>>
>>98561571
Yeah.
FWIW, we're set in about 3060, but no clan tech. (We're in the boonies in the pereiphery, and the only helm-level stuff we realistically have is what we brought with us. So we're limited force too and limited pilots. I've already lost 4 (2 in one game!) so its quite fun. I wish i'd brought more mediums.
>>
>>98561592
Oh, I see. Thanks. Most of the time I played with maps which Jump 3 was sufficient for terrain-crossing I couldn't think of that becoming a problem
>>
>>98561592
This is why Urbanmechs and Shadow Hawks are even worse than they look on paper. You don't even need to have buildings on the field for jump 2 or 3 to fail to cross terrain.
>>
>>98561637
Urbanmechs pretty much get to use their jets for free turning and crossing rough terrain hexes or landing in some woods in the park.
>>
>>98561646
Hopping from street to street just over level 1 buildings is useful enough for a defender; as well as climbing little sturdy buildings for elevated shooting.

The free turning and jumping TMM when they go in is useful though and arguably more important for sure.

So we use "1 card per player" initiative, and have a specific "on deck" call, so you can start thinking about your move before it's your turn. Then you have 60 seconds to actually make your move, though it's a *soft* limit when someone is having to run high MP units or make skidding/standing/sideslipping rolls during the movement. If you didn't move your unit in time? It's stationary that turn, put a 6 on the movement die. Does it feel bad to do that? Yes, it does. "Feels bad" moments can also be teaching moments, and doing this to force people to move faster trains them to move faster. Which means that, by now, I don't usually even have to mention a time limit; my players move fast and make decisions without needing to be reminded.

Players will usually adjust to the expectations you hold for them as long as you're open and up front about it, and apply those expectations fairly across the board. If they aren't capable of doing that, then, frankly, you probably don't want them on your table anyway.

>do people mostly or exclusive play in matching eras like a pseudohistorical
No.

>does this have gameplay ramifications to the mech statlines
Kinda. There's different mechs, different variants, and different weapons, but most newer weapons and armor (outside of clan stuff) are sidegrades. The issue arises with introtech stuff vs later stuff because you don't hit the limits of specialist gear under introtech. A well optimized clan mech might forgo endosteel because it runs out of space, but an introtech mech doesn't have access to endosteel and probably has like 30 empty crits, so it's just several tons heavier than if it had endosteel. In general if you put anything past 3050 against something from 3151 it will be a mostly fair fight.

>would the existing essentials box with the two models be good for onboarding other locals and myself into the game for a start
I don't know what specific mech variants they have in the box and you can always just run them as whatever variant, but yeah it's pretty solid. Wouldn't be my preferred mechs for onboarding games, but serviceable.

>for making an Inner Sphere force, are there any suggestions on what lance boxes to pick up? what seems to be iconic looks cool and all but i imagine going off that alone would just end up with a less coherent composition
Honestly find a theme you like and play it. Megamek vs the AI is a good way to get a feel for the game without sinking a lot of time playing against yourself. I personally like aesthetically cohesive forces eg. all chicken walkers or all humanoid mechs or all quads and at least for the first two examples there's so many available that you can make whatever you want as far as force design (heavy vs light, fast vs slow, etc.). But just a general suggestion with regards for nothing else IS Command and IS Battle lances offer relatively balanced forces, fire support mixed with mobile scouts or strikers.
>>
>>98562913
Eras stuff can get super autistic depending on your local scene, but normally it's just an upper bound for the tech that you can expect. Unlike IRL, mechs and variants that are hundreds of years old are not suicidal to take against stuff made "last year" whether that means 3039 or 3150.
>>

Anon, Battletech is basically a historical wargame about a history which hasn't happened yet. It can ALSO be approached as a generic pickup game, and it can ALSO be approached as tournament game which is either era specific or isn't era specific, depending on the TOs goal. But a GMd campaign featuring you and some buddies against a GM controlled OPFOR using "period accurate" Mechs and equipment is the core gameplay mode the Battletech has always used.

Go see if you can find a Game of Armored Combat starter box right now before they disappear. That will get you plenty of minis that will serve you well no matter what era you end up focusing on.
>>
>>98561874
>>
>>98563034
Thought that was the case to some extent, so I guess that leaves finding a solid entrypoint to the fluff than a primer.

Will check if an LGS here can order it in, or otherwise hunt it down. Looks like a pretty neat selection.

I like the idea of protomechs adding some VOTOMs/Heavy Gear mini mecha to the mix, but damn, the designs are absolutely retarded furryslop
>>
>>98563034
Most groups I've seen don't give much of a fuck about era, certainly not to the extent of actual wargames. I don't see any groups that just play first succession wars, and pure introtech is only for the groggest of grogs. Most I've generally seen is a sort of "hey don't take broken IJJ targeting computer pulse boats because that's unfun"
>>
>>98563146
From my experience a lot of people don't want to go past FCCW or at the latest Jihad, since after that you start seeing a lot more equipment with rules not found in TW/BMM and a bunch of extra complications like different armor types that take different amounts of damage from certain weapons.
>>
>>98563141
The original first gen protomech designs are definitely a departure yeah. They have a super robot mazinger mook sorta vibe which is not really what people expect out of a Dougram/Macross style stompy war game.
The later protomechs look a lot better imo. Unfortunately there's not much done with them and the fluff seems to turn people off from using them.
>>
>>98563165
Why did they do such a shit job on the first protos anyway? Who actually thought battletits on a combat unit were a good idea?
>>
>>98563155
I generally just see less "none of this era" and more "none of this tech." Nobody really gives a shit if you take a post-Jihad mech if it doesn't have IJJs or annoying armor types, meanwhile shit like "this mech has several clan large pulse lasers and a targeting computer" gets much worse reception even if it's possible in 3050.
>>
>>98563173
Yeah it doesn't really make any sense, especially since the entire point of photos is because a point of them was supposed to cost less resources than a mech, kinda feels counterintuitive to waste resources adding unnecessary ornamentation.
Personally, between the fluff of the pilots feeling like their machines, and the designs giving off super robot vibes, my theory is that the writer just wanted to sneak in some Getter/Mazinger type designs in the setting.
>>
>>98563165
>the fluff seems to turn people off from using them
Hot garbage shouldn't be used, ProtoMech tech is a failed branch fielded by Clans too pathetic to keep their OmniMechs in good working order, or failed to build enough of them to keep their MTOE at strength.
>>
>>98563213
Yeah that's what I mean, what's the point of introducing a brand new type as garbage from the start?
Mechanically they're not even that bad, they're basically super Battle Armor units, they're even meant to be used in groups of 5.
Everything around Protomechs' writing is bizarre.

>But a GMd campaign featuring you and some buddies against a GM controlled OPFOR using "period accurate" Mechs and equipment is the core gameplay mode the Battletech has always used
That's a funny way to say "3v3 mechs only 2 map sheets final destination"
>>98563141
It's just a rushed, desperate "we need ideas now" concept. That BA can already be piloted from a cockpit and ultralights exist means that they never really had an open niche to begin with. Making them ugly as well just doomed them to the dustbin. Even if you totally redesigned them they still don't really do anything interesting and their role in the setting is half-baked and pretty pointless.
>>98563233
Still say that deciding early that quads would be a near-boondoggle doomed them to bipedal essentialism and ruined the potential of alternate frames. Battletech is absolutely riddled with "this sounds cool, pity it was only made once by one guy and then it blew up and no one ever did it again, 500 more years of bipeds with medium lasers"
>>
>>98563173
They were literally first drafts and the artist expected to get notes back since the art direction was pretty vague, along the lines od "small, animalistic mechs". But instead of coming back with changes and revisions, they sent them to print.
>>
>>98563294
Quads at least still exist and aren't canonically a complete boondoggle like LAMs or protos, the designers just very rarely stat new ones. You get maybe 1 or 2 in a TRO at most. There's no real reason why there couldn't be more, except people just aren't that interested in making them. Which is a shame, cause I like designs like the Scorpion and the Xanthos.
I suppose the big issue was that there originally wasn't dedicated rules for quads, so the two quadruped anime mech models FASA had were awkwardly shoehorned to use biped rules even if it didn't really make sense, which discouraged the statting of new quads until they actually got proper rules, but by that time there were probably hundreds of biped mechs out there, including all the iconic designs, so quads never stopped feeling like a weird outlier. Also doesn't help that the construction rules make the design space for quads rather limited. You can basically only put guns in the torsos, due to the legs having few free crit slots and getting blocked by level 1 terrain.

I think protos could've had their place as mooks.
As the IS moved away from Introtech/salvage mindset and built increasingly more complex Battlemechs, refined Protomechs that fixed most of the fluff issues that the First Gen Protomechs had could've made way to factories across human space churning out loads of Protos at a faster rate than Battlemech production could hope to match.
Game wise this would set Protos up as the designated mooks of scenarios to make Battlemechs look that much better, like a professional mercenary lance wiping out companies of Protomechs run by pirates and milita units, with modded Indomechs being for the truly desperate and primitive areas of Periphery space, with Battlemechs being focused in state and large private military hands where they can involve real power against the small timers and the lesser systems' militaries.

Simultaneously you could run campaigns surrounding Protomechs where you're wiping out infantry and BAs but have a decent challenge in Tanks and Battlemechs can act as major boss encounters.
Design wise Spheroid designs would distance itself from Clanner Protos by building them more utilitarian in design compared to the Clans' totem like design scheme. Think VOTOM or Heavy Gear.

I think that would've worked pretty well imo, like comparing ACs to MTs or Gundams to GMs.

Big problem with quads is a lot of the mitigating bits introduced over time like directional torso mount weapons or extended torso twist are hidden in quirks which a lot of people just don't use in play for whatever reasons.
They should actually just make those specific rules not even quirks but just basic mechanics same as a Quad Turret, and just factor that shit into BV3 when they work that out. At least Quad Turret is now in the core rules. Those things are a fucking game changer for quads.
>>
>>98563455
Calling LAMs boondoggles is inaccurate. They're weren't willingly abandoned like Protos were, the factories were targeted and destroyed because they were high value targets, and the last one was kept in service for centuries straight until being destroyed by Clanners.
Even then Nova Cat destroyed the factory for ideological reasons, not because of the systems itself.
>>
Hey... so I'm going through the new rulebook and... did we discuss how Thunderbolts now have special munitions at the time? Because I don't remember that?
>>
>>98563534
quad turret rules baked in and some extra torso slots would pretty much solve all the criticisms people have for Quads.
>>
>>98563543
I mostly meant them being treated as abandoned technology both in- and out of universe. Most Clans consider protos a failure, with only 2 IS-based Clans using them at all, and the only post-3025 LAM designs are one failed Clan prototype and a trio of WoB ones that, along with other weirdos like drone mechs and superheavies, were meant to represent the Blakists pulling out all kinds of super-science wunderwaffe to desperately try to change the tide of the war.
Quads meanwhile are considered a viable weapon system in-universe that still sees active use with new models being developed, even if they're vastly outnumbered by more conventional biped mechs.

Another one of TRO 3060's finest: the Sirocco.
At least they saved the obligatory FWL issued light gauss rifles for a variant not the standard.

These days it has the quirk for directional weapon mount so those autocannon can flip and shoot behind it... if you're playing with quirks (again, that shit should be standard tech)
>>
>>98563738
>autocannon ammo stored in the rear legs

>>
>>98563738
Problem with making directional torso mount standard tech is that, unlike the later quad mech turret, it's not equipment on the record sheet, so they'd have to make it standard rules for all quads' torso-mounted weapons which wouldn't make sense for weapons not mounted on a turret, like Scorpion's PPC.
Though we do have mechs with record sheets that read "if using advanced rules, treat this mech as having a full-head ejection system", so something similar to mechs like the Goliath and Sirocco could work.

Hey 'techers, tourist here. I'm trying to shitbrew the most minimalist beer & pretzel mecha wargame to convert some friends. What are the staples of a good mecha wargame?

I guess I'll boil that down to:
- different frame choice (speed vs armor vs firepower tradeoff)
- power management (move or shoot)
- heat management (extra punch or low signature)
- hit location (hull, weapon, heatsink, reactor)
>>
>>98563455
Inner sphere quads are utterly screwed over by inner sphere bulky equipment yes. There's simply too little room to mount big low heat ballistics, and likewise to mount the heat sinks needed for energy weapons that COULD in theory fit the mech. At least Clan quads can hide 4 sinks in the legs, making them pretty well suited for wading into a river and ripping a few ER PPCs off the rack.
>>
Personally I'd argue Quads should've had three crit slots in each leg instead of two.

>Miniaturization is inevitable in technology
Not in military technology. Compare a Sherman to a Patton to an Abrams, or compare a P-51 to an F-4 to an F-35, or compare a Nimitz to a Kitty Hawk to a Midway class carrier. The main factor for military tech is mobility, protection, and weight of fire and for two of those superior size tends to lead into superior armament and protection.

Again, it's three factors of importance, speed is only one, if you lose a bit of speed but are much better armed and protected it's probably a pretty good deal.

>>98565867
That's something I don't get about the dark age "upgrades" to bring primitive mechs "up" to industrial standards. Yeah sure, the primitive parts weigh like 30% extra for no benefit, but they also don't have any extra penalties on the field. Even purpose made combat industrials fold like wet paper towels if they so much as get tapped in melee, and fall over if they're sneezed on. The actual upgrade to primitives would be turning them into retrotech with modern components to shave the weight off. A real psycho could even mix clantech with primitive tech.

The Industrialmech problem is that they aren't supposed to be in a mech fight, as in operate under TW rules. They're supposed to slap mechanized infantry and AFVs built to the standards of mechanized infantry, with maybe some light combat vehicles in the mix.

LAMs aren't part of mosh pits, they're strategic units.

There's nothing wrong with Protos, they are a politically correct way for Clans to not use vehicles and they do what BA is supposed to do according to fiction and early concepts of how Clans operate.

There simply aren't enough tripods around for the class to matter.

Quads have two sensible uses:
1) Scouts that won't face-plant and reliably return, even with heavy damage
2) Camping in heavy woods, Running whatever stealth armour you prefer, using their front legs as ablative armour to gausszilla/Itano Circus.

There is a whole armory full of weapon types that should be very cool and add a lot to gameplay but instead they made them stupid and not make sense and therefore they are useless, which is dumb. The new rules at least seem more open spiritually open to fixing some of these issues to make more stuff make sense, and I'm hoping they continue that trend. I don't think two legged battleship tech should remain the undisputed and uncontested supreme forever and that under certain circumstances other things should work better

Hmm...they expressly ruled out the Clan Invasion in Gothic by having the Exodus fleet die out, and a massive alien invasion would work as variation of that theme.

Similarly relevantly, there are considered to be multiple Golden Eras of Science Fiction with two big ones being during the Flash Gordon era of the 50s/early 60s and another with Original Trilogy Star Wars to Star Trek: the Next Generation in the late 70s/80s. Military Sci-Fi also picked up a big boom in the 00s.

>LAM's etc
I fucking hate LAM's, but for the sake of the argument LAM's are either incredibly broken because of tactical/strategic movement ability, or incredibly fucked because they are (and should be) incredibly fragile. Even assuming both things are true, if that were the case nobody would ever give a fuck about Battlemechs because a LAM outclasses them in every scenario except durability. But if that were the case, why the fuck are you fighting fair if you've got a LAM? And then the game ceases to be Battletech and becomes Aerotech. Which if that's what you want, fine.

You have to keep in mind that if LAMs are in play, then so are ASF. And that's not a fight the LAM will win. Compare a Stinger LAM's air mode to something like an introtech Sparrowhawk. Idk, honestly. My biggest guess was that Soviet had an early stage project of their own stealth fighter, so Russians just picked what was left and sold to their own president to get fundings.

Literally leftovers from the Cold War mindset, when militaries were preparing to engage massive amount of NATO/Pact tanks.

I completely agree which is why I said it ceases to become Battletech and instead becomes Aerotech as now the primary battlespace shifts to the sky (and sub-orbital I guess) because now you're trying to use aerospace units to interdict flights of LAM's, which have taken the place of conventional Battlemech units. By the same token, anything that is not capable of being air-transported is now easily capable of being out maneuvered by LAM's. LAM's don't need to face off against conventional units if they or dedicated aerospace units can bomb the shit out of standard Battlemech or Armor formations.

This also means that LAM's can swoop in to the battlefield after having OPFOR bombed like crazy and act like vultures, picking off the wounded and never fighting conventional opponents at full capacity. Which then, in turn, means that infantry, power armor and air transportable armor (unironically, fucking Protomechs of all things) become the primary ground based defence. Easy to move, easy to dig in and hide, tough enough to fight fragile LAM's on their terms, as well as being cheap, and you do actually need to have 'boots on the ground'.
At some point, heavy fortifications would exist which you would need to assault conventionally, so Battlemechs wouldn't disappear but they would be second fiddle to LAM units. They would almost exclusively become heavy siege units for very specific targets.
>>
>>98563173
They have organic features because it helps the pilots' synch ratios. They're controlled by a direct link with the pilot's brain, so the more it resembles a living thing, the more easily the pilot adapts to it. Some of them like the Erinyes actually have fully articulated animatronic faces so they can match the user's expressions.
>>
>>98567985
It also means LAMs are grounded if there's a big scary ASF lurking the airspace nearby. The last thing you want as a LAM is to rise three elevations and get sniped right back down by something that was just waiting to swoop down on your rear arc.

On the other hand, and to play devil's advocate, fighting ASF is one of the few times where Battlemech node is useful, because the LAM can just park and transform, then start taking potshots at ASF to knock them out with some PSR checks.
Using LAMs is almost like roshambo.
You use Airmech mode to travel quick over land, scouting, and to better handle better equipped conventional mechs.
You use Battlemech mode for anti-air duty and when you need accuracy over movement speed.
And then ASF mode is for getting on and off world, or to quickly get out of dodge.
>>
>>98568450
If the ASF actually come down to fight you when you're on the ground. Circling overhead like vultures at elevation 9 is perfectly reasonable when there are LAMs on the ground. Even if they're able to glide along the in airmech, that's waaaaay slower and makes time for defensive units to get in their way or for high priority targets to be hidden in basements or caves or whatever.
>>
There's little point in discussing fully the details of LAM viability as long as the writing says "yeah they were great harassers and tactical assets and they built them for hundreds of years" and the rules are just a high pitched nerd scream.

That aside, of course ASF are better at being ASF. They sure suck at landing and fighting though. That's the whole point.
>>
>>98568503
>That aside, of course ASF are better at being ASF. They sure suck at landing and fighting though. That's the whole point.
I mean.... they can do it *really well* but only once per airframe.
>>
>>98568450
>You use Battlemech mode for anti-air duty and when you need accuracy over movement speed.
A pretty shitty anti-air duty, since most suited for anti-air duty mechs are just walking turrets like Rifleman, or Bane.
>or to quickly get out of dodge.
By default not as quick as mech with jump jets.
>>
I think it's a good thing that ASF are objectively better than LAMs in the air, a LAMs main purpose should be a versatile unconventional unit that can run around hitting the enemy forces where they're weak, or ambushing and backstabbing unprepared enemy units.
They shouldn't be able to directly compete with ASF, otherwise what'd be the point of ASF?
Otherwise what ever new rules they work out for LAMs in the future need to take in account and rebalance the multiple forms a LAM has access to, so that you're incentivized to actually bother transforming rather than just staying in Airmech mode all game.
>>
>>98568611
>By default not as quick as mech with jump jets.
I know iJJ partial wing is silly, but I don't think there are any mechs that can jump 48 hexes in one turn. Because that's the lowest max safe velocity a LAM can achieve. Most of them double it to 96. All of them can push it by half again.
>>
>>98568818
A LAM in ASF mode, that is. ASF move in mapsheets. Each mapsheet is 16 hexes.
>>
>>98568829
Even in just Airmech mode, a 4/6/4 has a jumping flank of 18 hexes, even cruise is still 12. That's about as slow as LAMs in Airmech mode get at that, even with IJJs and PW available Battlemechs just can't match that.
Though tbf, an IJJ pulse boat is objectively the scarier unit in a straight fight regardless.
>>
>>98568611
>A pretty shitty anti-air duty, since most suited for anti-air duty mechs are just walking turrets like Rifleman, or Bane.
to be fair to the LAM in that scenario, it's less that it's actually specialized in AA like a Rifleman or a Lancelot, just that it does have an answer to fighting ASF if it needs to.
If transforming into a Battlemech scares the ASF to stay high in the air and away from fighting the LAM, that's effectively a tactical win for the LAM, because it's free to continue to its objective.
>>
>>98568912
But at a much slower pace, which is also a tactical win for the ASF unless there's no ground units along the way at all.
The archetypal LAM is a 6/9/6 that can cruise near the ground in Airmech at 18/27 and fly in ASF at speeds of up to 192 hexes (or 12 mapsheets) per turn. Forcing it to move in single or double digit hexes is a big win. The LAM is probably on a timer, if they had infinite time, they'd have just dropped a lance of big fat mechs and let them waddle to the target.
>>
I thought the LAMs were for providing Close Air Support and bullying the enemy vehicles for our infantry and tanks
>>
>>98568818
>I don't think there are any mechs that can jump 48 hexes in one turn. Because that' the lowest max safe velocity a LAM can achieve. Most of them double it to 96. All of them can push it by half again.
How are you getting those stats, anon? The absolute maximum I've been able to push LAMs is to a 40 Ton with a 7/11/10 in 'Mech mode which translates to Cruising 30, Flanking 45 in Airmech and 10/15 in Fighter mode. And that is with absolutely zero armor and weapons.
>>
>>98568956
If you just need a little bit of support, it's definitely a lot safer for a LAM to drop into Airmech mode and then scream through your battle, wildly shooting at anything it crosses paths with. It can't lawndart at least.
>>
>>98568970
10/15 is in mapsheets. And it's Thrust, which is turned into Velocity, which is what actually moves the unit. You spend all 10 of your safe Thrust at the start of movement and now you have 10 velocity. That means you move 10 mapsheets, or 160 hexes.
>>
Since anon is confused, fast moving air and space units don't have "speed" like every other unit type. Instead they have Thrust. Thrust can be used to increase or decrease velocity, turn in the inky blackness of space (in atmosphere you get free turns after a certain number of straight hexes thanks to your control surfaces), or do special maneuvers like fancy flips and rolls.
A flying unit can spend Thrust at the beginning or end of its movement, then must move a mandatory distance equal to its Velocity. In space, there is no cap on Velocity. In atmosphere, there's a harsh cap on Velocity and you lose half of your current amount every single turn, so keep spending Thrust or else you'll stall.
>>
>>98568936
That's also fair. I'd argue that ultimately the edge would still go to the LAM because the ASF would face the same problems if the LAM shifted to Airmech mode to in atmosphere, but I'll concede it'd ultimately depend on tht objective itself, as well as what support is given since this is probably getting a bit too whiteroom to actually matter.
For me this kind of discussion does make LAMs more appealing though, because it's genuinely fun to think about.

...this is one of those fuck-ass conversions between Aerotech's two movement types of High and Low Altitude movement with its own unique maps and the more conventional to battletech ground maps, isn't it? I ain't the most familiar with the Aerotech rules as I'm till learning all the ground units, so I had generally been assuming a more VTOL style rather than that sorta style.

Speaking of VTOL, though...would a reasonable rebalance of the AirMech mode to swap from its bespoke WiGE to use it's Jump for the base VTOL movement and applying 1.5x to it for Flank? That feels decently strong but also way less of an insane outlier of TMM madness.
>>
File: StraightMovement.png (97 KB, 681x863)

>>98569060
I think part of why I was assuming a closer-to-VTOL setup for Aerotech on ground maps was probably because when skimming through the rules at first, I saw this and made some erroneous assumptions and hadn't gotten to buckling down on Aerotech to learn how it actually worked just yet.
>>
>>98569060
Aerotech has like four kinds of maps. Space is space and each hex is 30km.
Upper Atmosphere is partially space and partially... the upper atmosphere and each hex is uhh... a distance. The view is like if you were in a satellite looking up over the horizon. There's a hard line on the map where you cross over into the atmosphere and things get hot. Ground units floating in space want to stay away from this line. Gravity wants to pull them across it. If you go all the way off the map in the direction of the planet, you move to the low atmosphere map.
Lower Atmosphere is more like a satellite view looking straight down and each hex is an entire ground mapsheet. You can use a normal ground map to represent this, in which case its levels become Elevations for things like mountains or megastructures.
"Aerospace Units on Ground Maps" is the same exact map you play with mechs on, but the ASF does its best to pretend it is still on the Low Atmosphere map, so instead of each velocity making you move a mapsheet-equivalent hex, you move 16 dirt grubbing hexes instead. At any time, if an ASF moves across a mapsheet edge, they can go back to low altitude view. Gameplay-wise, it's as close as they could get it while letting you fuck around with individual hexes inside a mapsheet.
>>
>>98569096
That chart is for the free turns you get for control surfaces. Your 10/15 moving at velocity 10 has to move 160 hexes, but it can change its facing at any time after moving 44. If you want to change facing twice, you have to move 44, turn, move another 44, then turn again.

>>

>>

The ISW is a campaign map so it doesn't really count. You don't fight on the map, and your movement is limited to 1 hex (2 with lithium fusion batteries).

Yeah, while this is a wrap-around (sheet is from Campaign Operations, but the right side map is the Planetary Hex Map that Battleforce 2 uses for specific things), this is still very much a hell of a lot more than what Low Altitude would cover.

May track at least somewhat close to High Altitude? It is somewhat harder to tell from first look, but its sorta made as a flat d8, with partial hexes linking together. Going from the North pole formed of one set of the 6 points and South pole formed of the other 6 needs a total of 15 Hexes of movement to create a 30 hex circumference "sphere". Dunno how well that map size would translate for Aerotech.
>>

I'm tired. It's two sets of 5 points not 2 sets of 6. And it kinda would form more of a d20 shape from its d10 flattening. Dunno how I got d8 from that.

There was a lot of talk about the utility of LAMs, but what about Quadvees? I get that they give movement redundancy, and some differing movement bonuses like the Notos moving faster in tank mode because of its wheels, but is that all?

Also I know OmniQuadvees are a thing, and wheels and treads are both available, but can you give a Quadvee hover locomotion instead?

I'm not too familiar with the rules, but I think the tank form gives the reduced height in the same way as prone (dropping Mechs from height 2 to height 1 allowing for hiding behind terrain easier) does but maintains near-full movement speed? I think it can also take advantage of Hull Down ability of tanks, as rarely used as that is, for a buff to defense.
>>
>>98569585
One thing I see no point in is having Quadvees run by a pilot and gunner by default. If a LAM can be piloted just fine by one Mechwarrior, there's no reason a Quadvee needs two guys.

Yeah, a quadvee is literally just a quad mech with tracks or wheels on its legs so that it can roll around while prone. It really shouldn't even be a separate unit type when it could just be equipment for quads. Use some tonnage and a critslot in each leg to let the mech move using the rules for tracked/wheeled vehicle movement while prone.

Stats wise as many anons have already said the main issue is a lack of crits meaning you can't really mount much equipment on them or if you do can't really take advantage of weight savings materials effectively. So you are just paying for an non optimal design.

Rules wise I feel I am broadly generalizing here but it is a case their positives are too niche. Like the rule about them being considered one weight less i.e. an assault quad can cross a bridge only rated to carry heavy mechs, the situations where that is going to be useful are few and far between. The bonuses they also get to PSRs are best described that if you are in a situation where these are proving to be useful you've got much bigger problems to worry about.
