I love fantasy Africa. There is so much cool inspiration for it, from Aksum to Songhai to the Zulus. What settings have cool African aesthetics I can mine for my home game?
there really aren't that many i can think ofelona in guild wars maybe? it should at least have a lot of concept art of a fantasy africa
>>98544828Some things I can recall:Degenesis have post-apoc neolibyans as a faction.Arcana Evolved's Diamond Throne setting had lion furries as a core race.VTES had an expansion called Ebony Kingdom that featured african vampires.Original Dark Sun had an african themed city state.
>>98544828Degenesis had some actually interesting post apocalyptic world building with the remains of UN style african union being some of the more advanced and organized because it was already really fucked there all the time while europe was getting devastated.
>>98544828Nobody on this website is going to give African civilization, such as it existed, a fair shake because of the current political scene. You've seen the memes. "They were still building huts while we were building Notre Dame!"
>>98545209>didn't f5 before posting >nubian hive mind
Spears of the Dawn is an older Sine Nomine setting book. Haven't run it, but it seems of the standard quality he makes tied to the themes and setting you might find interesting. >>98545241Sine Nomine is from here
>>98544828nigger
Nyambe was kinda cool
>>98544828TES has the Redguards, but they are a mix of Africa, MENA, Japanese, Carribean and Jedi.
>>98546231I've been told that culturally they closest resemble the Berbers 1/1.
for all people go on about how 'woke' fantasy has become I can't really think of any Africa based settings outside a couple of novels that came out years ago
>>98546270Woke people don't actually care about Africa, only when Africans are shoehorned into traditionally white spaces. It's not actual pro-blackness as much as it's veiled anti-whiteness
>>98546241>Berberstheir culture is seen only in drips and drabs, with those being heavily influenced by the areas I named. They have a mix of Japanese and MENA name influences, come from an island called Yokuda (pretty much not Japan). have a swordsman hero who is notMusashi who even wrote the not Book of Five Rings. Their religion is probably the closest to African via the Caribbean (their chief god is called Tall Papa). They have a strongly Japanese martial tradition, centered on Sword Singers, martial artist. The elite Sword Singers were the Ansei, notJedi who could manifest blades made of spiritual energy (lightsabers). Perhaps the Berber comparison is migration related.
>>98544828Alara's Bant has been described as "African Camelot." Black knights, rhino and elephant people, wide sweeping plains, magic lions. But it's not exactly Shaka Zuku shit.
>>98545241All I want is cool shit for my campaign. Why do politics have to ruin everything?
>>98546279>It's not actual pro-blackness as much as it's veiled anti-whitenessits mainly this; woke fundementally is anti-status quo; if they advocate for anything, its not because they are for it in isolation, its merely a tool used to erode civilization. If pressed, the woke would say the lack of any African settings in modern TTRPG products has to do with a disdain for cultural appropiation, specifically the paradox that lies in making a fantasy African continent interesting; to do so means giving it qualities (namely western ones) that reduce its authenticity, and thus less African.
>>98544828Read the Dark Star trilogy
>>98545209>>98545237>>98545259Degenesis Africans are pretty neat, though they're more post-apocalyptic than fantasy in nature. It's fun to explore how they flip the script by colonising the ruins of Europe and exploiting the European natives though.
>>98544828Can't really help since I'm not too knowledagble, but read Imaro. It's like Conan but set in a fantastical Africa, written by a black author. I read the first one and it's enjoyable.
>>98546270Doing the requisite research is a pain in the ass, because there are miles of politicized disinformation surrounding Africa. Usually leftovers from the propaganda justifying the Scramble for Africa or Translantic Slave trade. Between that and Kangposting, it's a fucking mess to get anything that makes for a cool fantasy setting.Which sucks. Because the Anansi stories are cool. The King who Rizzed the Sun is cool. But getting to it is a motherfucker.
>>98544828Zebra horses
>>98546968>>98557126Or take inspiration from Mirage, with zebra unicorns
>>98544828This book might be slightly out of date and is mostly wargames-focused, but it might be worth it
>>98552954Add to that, most of the storytellers who would have known the old ways that would inspire a fantasy setting are long dead, and the remnants scattered across the world and morphed in to different folk tales. The loss of historical lineage and memory is equal to the Bronze Age Collapse.>kangpostingIt gets amusing when you try to explain how Egypt vacillated between a majority African kingdom and majority Semitic kingdom depending on the time period and ruling dynasty. The confusion and/or butthurt that ensues always makes me chuckle.
>>98552954Also doesn't help that the most recent(so the last decade) of African fantasy fiction is very Yoruba-focused in terms of aesthetic nomenclature, which discounts the rest of the continent's cultures and ethnicities
>>98558584>a majority African kingdomThat's quite dishonest imo. There was exactly one period, the 25th dynasty which lasted around 90 years of a small amount of kushite elites going into egypt by conquest (conquering fractured Egyptian and Libyan lords), taking power over a majority of egyptians and the Kushites in question presented themselves as being very egyptian culturally. (having had 400 years of being under egypt's colonial thumb only a few centuries prior)Before that there was egyptian raiding (old kingdom), invasions with forts mainly to control several gold mines (middle kingdom) and colonial annexation (new kingdom) where the colony was administrated for 400 years by the "King's Son, Overseer of the Southern Foreign Countries". (if you want to google it then it's Viceroy of Kush & Wawat)None of them were ever majority African or involved what you'd consider demographic shifts to either Egypt or Kush though the egyptian administration pushed egyptian religion and a hybrid egyptian culture formed among the kushites, which the 25th dynasty cited to solidify their rule with lots of Amun-Re symbology and building of temples.
>>98558584>Egypt>majority>African>SemiticI'm confused. All Semites are Afro-Asiatic, but not all Afro-Asiatics are Semites. When was Egypt majority Semitic? And Egyptians are and were certainly (North) Africans, but not (Sub-Saharan) Africans. Kangposting implies Sub-Saharans. When was Egypt majority Sub-Saharan?
>>98545241>African civilizationUnless you're exclusively referring to North Africa, I think you mean "culture".
>>98544828For how much Post-Nuclear fiction there is, there's a criminal lack of anything centered on a post-WW3 Africa. Considering the lack of truly nukeable targets, you'd be able to see massive conflicts over fertile soil as populations collapses due to UN aid drying up. It'd also give the African nations with (somewhat) professional militaries a chance to really shine against the ooga booga hordes.>tfw ywn see african cao cao larp as prussia and struggle against the hordes of people 3 iq points lower than him to unite buganda
>>98564698Neo-Boers and a new apartheid would fit that setting perfectly, but would probably also get it cancelled instantly.
>>98563678Surely states such as the Mali Empire or the Kingdom of Ethiopia would count as civilisations?
>>98570061I'll withhold judgment until the archaeology supports the textual claims, if ever. A utopian capital city of 100.000 people where the exotic foreigners are super moral, and yet no archaeology can find the place sounds just as fanciful as many other travelogues and moralizing fables. Sounds like some Atlantis, Shangri La, El Dorado, Khazarian jews shit to me. I don't even take Tacitus at face value when he praises the virtues of the Germanics as a way to criticize his own society by contrast, and I'm Germanic.
>>98570103I wasn't saying these states were utopias, just that they achieved a similar level of complexity and infrastructure as other historical civilisations
Love me the aesthetic of tribal magic being just the guy that has the power of the word over the other tribesmen. Yeelen is usually the movie I think when I think about fantasy Africa and one of the scenes I like the most is when the evil wizard father uses magic and this particular "magic" was only him yelling at some tribesmen and then doing their bidding, because his word made them move, henceforth magic. There's actual magic in the movie, but it's a showcase that he's more interested in the power the magic provides rather than the magic itself and is just fine calling his authority over the tribesmen "magic"Also having these big ass, handcrafted sword-like totems or fetishes as your medium to use magic is super cool too.
>>98570173>Yeelen>listed as an Afrofuturist filmAre there so few Afrofantasy films that they just combine them with Afrofuturism to bulk out the list?
>>98544828There's always the utter despair of the world of the Swahali coast and Congo durring the period of the Arab slave trade. It's all very conanesque. You've got warring tribes that barely wear any clothing where every man is a warrior. You've got decadent slave cities on islands and in the heart of the jungle where slave merchants have harems in fetid palaces. Then you have the stronger native kingdoms, often relying on traditional warfare to keep the slave raids at bay, often losing ground in the process.Meanwhile new sorts of foreigners are pouring in, some are preaching a bewildering variety of ways to worship their new god and all the while others seem to be sizing up the land for some mysterious and ominous purpose. Of course these new foreigners all hate each other far more than they look down on the locals. It's a very interesting period in history if you aren't racist. It makes for an amazing setting but alas my players wouldn't ever play in such a setting.
>>98570148That's like claiming Atlantis was real but not a utopia like it is described in the primary source for it.My point is that when the primary source is a clearly utopian moralistic fable (I'm thinking of the arab writer who described Mali), one can do as you do and strip away the most obviously fantastical elements and try to keep what remains, or do as me and be skeptical of the whole source. I guess much like the debate between the (allegedly non-christian) jesus-historicists and the (non-christian) jesus-mythicists. I'm generally a skeptic and a mythicist whenever a story involves the fantastical.
>>98570210>It's all very conanesque.Or Solomon Kane-esque if you would prefer
>>98570207What's that thing with African views on the concept of the future...
>>98570220Fair enough, I will admit I've not read Ibn Battuta's primary sources, but from my limited impression, he didn't particularly like Mali that much since it wasn't that Muslim and locals were kind of mean to him
>>98570264I haven't either, but going by the quotes I've read, it seems very moralizing. I'd guess it is intended to make his arab compatriots ashamed of their own sins by comparing it to the sinless negro heathens. Not that dissimilar from Tacitus shaming his fellow Romans for their vices by comparing them to the virtuous barbarians. You'd expect a Muslim to complain that the place isn't Muslim (yet). That's par for the course for all Yahwists. And remember, Islam is at least theoretically explicitly anti-racist, so if he is a devout Muslim, then he could be writing about the magic negros for the exact same reason that you see liberal Americans do the same thing. Wakanda forever. But I do concede that I should have excluded the Sahel and the Horn of Africa from my remark in addition to the purely Mediterranean North Africa.
>>98570207>>98570227It's not african futurism at all, it's supposed to take place in 13th century Mali. It's just some retards mislabeling shit again online.
>>98570061Not the guy quoted and I don't have feelings about the term civilization of sub-saharans but specifically on the subject of the Mali "Empire" it wasn't very civilized.Calling it an empire and the maps showing it is a bit of a joke too since they had nowhere near control of those borders. What it amounts to is a king being tithed to by a number of villages, just how controlled they were is questionable, and the persian muslim traders like Ibn Battuta who wrote about it first-hand did not describe it in flattering terms except being impressed by how their fathers enforced piety, by chaining down people until they could recite the koran by heart. Musa's immediate successor and relative is talked about as having offered a female servant of his court as food for a group of cannibal tribe dignitaries that controlled several gold mines inside Mali. He also talks about how racist they were against whites including persians and how some villages food was so bad members of his crew ended up dying from food poisoning and the rest of them had to find an apotechary to purge it with ipecac. The whole idea of Mansa Musa having spent enough gold to crash Egypt is now proven to be a falsehood made up by people well after the fact. Academics have traced the origin to a book of islamic myths and wonders, I forget the author but it included the story of his gold right next to Giant Rocs and djinnis, they also showed that egyptian accounts of the time had no such record, and we have records of gold and silver prices from those years.
>>98570103Not sure why you're not considering Ethiopia.
>>98572277NTA, but Ethiopia kind of defies the north/sub-saharan division by being clearly distinct from both. It's also burdened by the term (A)ethiopia historically being used as a general term for anything south of egypt, so historical quotes about it are a mess. And thirdly, OP mentioned Axum, so I don't know how interested he would be in more on Ethiopia.Anyways, according to themselves they invented coffee, have the ark of the covenant and a church with a history going back several centuries pre-islam, and a royal family that descended from King Solomon. When Europeans made a push to christianize and colonize Africa, the Ethiopians were already christian (predating the christianization of most of Europe) and they fought back and were never a colony unless you want to count a ww2 occupation by Italy. I don't know what the criteria for "civilization" is from the other anon, but they have a history that goes far beyond the tribes in huts image many have of africa south of egypt. Though they also have tribesmen in huts, since the modern multiethnic nationstate of Ethiopia is much bigger than the historical kingdom. Probably one of the cooler sources of inspiration to mine for a fantasy game to be honest.
>>98573083How would we classify locations like Zanzibar?
>>98573170I'm nowhere near as familiar with it, but an island based trade hub is a pretty common trope in fantasy, so I guess making such a location !not-Zanzibar would be a shortcut to verisimilitude if you're inclined to read up on it.Definitely sub-saharan, if that's what you were asking, and I don't think I'd call a city state a "civilization", but probably if you take the network of indian ocean trade cities as a whole.
>>98573418Itsounds like a perfect analogy for a starter city, or going from (relatively) pacified regions to adventure land
>>98573442Black Americans have such a complex about Africa; it's kinda fascinatingMakes me wonder what a fantasy take on a Liberia-style state would be like
>>98544828Dude you could have a faction that's just a wholesale copy of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. They even claim descent from Solomon and they kept in a bunch of books in the bible usually considered non-canonical in Europe like Enoch and Jubilees. Have you seen their art? It's both familiar but also totally its own thing
>>98574480To add to this, they also claim the ark of the covenant was hidden in Ethiopia after the fall of Solomon's temple by King Menelik I, son of the Queen of Sheba and Solomon. They even have their own solomonic magic tradition distinct from the Clavicula Salomonis
>>98558494Oh for the days where Magic could actually squeeze interesting fantasy out of diversity, could use exotic cultures without self-flagellation...
>>98573578Mordor
>>98544828If we're talking about fantasy Africa, why are we excluding Egypt? Is it boring to use their Pantheon now?
>>98574963Not OP, but when people say Africa nowadays, they tend to mean Black Africa, just like Asia has shifted its meaning from Anatolia to the Far-East. Egypt has had much more to do with the Afro-Asiatic and Mediterranean-European worlds than the Black African world. The Sahara is quite an effective barrier.
>>98570264>>98570264I've read sections of it (a translation of course) and the "vibe" I got from it was it wasn't about how great Mali or Mansa Musa specifically was. Instead it read like a parable about the incredible power and majesty of Islam: there's this fantastical, far away, exotic kingdom where the streets are metaphorically paved with gold; but even this vastly rich king becomes a devoted, pious, generous and dutiful Muslim due to the power of Allah! Wow! Even if he performs his good Muslim duties in his bizarre, fantastically rich yet still quaintly childlike and primitive manner, bless his little heart. But I'm going from memory, that's why I can only relate the vibe. It's similar to those stories of a European missionary travelling North America, getting captured by Native americans and then boiled alive and eaten. But the missionary's resolute faith in the face of the torture ends up converting all the Indians, so they come out of their woods to a nearby Christian settlement asking to be baptised.
>>98573578just like white americans have a weird complex about europe and their heritage. It's an american thing.I cant imagine something interesting to do with liberia, but if you are interested in developed african countries check out the Asante empire. My personal favourite of these states as fantasy inspiration is Benin>In the Dahomey, some younger people were apprenticed to older soldiers and taught the kingdom's military customs until they were old enough to join the army. Dahomey instituted an elite female soldier corps variously called Ahosi (the king's wives), Mino ("our mothers" in Fongbe) or the "Dahomean Amazons". This emphasis on military preparation and achievement earned Dahomey the nickname of "Black Sparta", from European observers and 19th-century explorers such as Sir Richard Burton
>>98573442>Before THEY learned to wash their bodiesA skill Africans have since forgotten. Literally pot calling the kettle black lmao
>>98575405It's not really a skill issue for them. They produce an order of magnitude more of that chemical in the sweat that causes stench. The goat-smelly one.Nature > nurture.
>>98575382>just like white americans have a weird complex about europe and their heritage.>It's an american thing.I've only really ever seen that with people getting a bit too into Ireland or Scotland stuff; there's a reason the term plastic paddy exists after all. It's less common for Americans to care about their English, French, Scandinavian, or German heritage, at least in personal anecdotal experience.Maybe it's just because the Black American one devolves into pure hotepism or weird stuff like Nation of Islam since they don't have a specific region or culture to Larp as, so it stands out more.I guess most of it is completely harmless, like Kwanza
>>98576247People do that to cope when they can't relate to the mainstream culture. Anglos and such weren't feeling left out so they didn't do it, until everything got fucked enough and then things like hyperborea edits immediately took off. It's all harmless coping.
>>98576247A lot of black americans have a discontinuity in what they know about their heritage caused by slavery. They can trace their ancestry back to a slave, and they know their earlier ancestors were from somewhere in Africa, and possibly the region based on genetics. I think it's perfectly natural for this to cause real difference in how they view their heritage compared to europeans or white americans who more often have a better idea of where their ancestors were from. An idea of "African" as an identity despite being a massive and diverse continent is a necessity because the detailed knowledge of their heritage was one of the many things that were lost when their ancestors were enslaved. Adopting a specific culture in Africa would be more or less arbitrary, so their larp is a sort of pan-africanism. I think it's no worse than white americans who larp Irish, or europeans who often just shortcut to identifying solely with their country of birth despite probably being a mix of some sort since borders and nations move quite rapidly compared to generations.>>98573505Not-Zanzibar as the base of operations with adventures on the not-Indian Ocean coast sounds like a great setting for a fantasy rpg.
>neolithic stone age setting without dinosaursAfrica is BORING
>>98576343Surely Africa has some fun folklore creatures that can be used to do cool encounters with, like the Impundulu or Khanyapa
>>98576318Aren't they all just the weaker tribes from the coastal regions of West Africa though? It's not exactly like Bushmen were being deathmarched across the savannah and boated over to the new world or anything.
>>98576247Kwanza is less harmless than it appears, it was created as an attempt to get african Americans to adopt traditions that are different to the traditions of white Americans just for the sake of being different, and the thing itself is totally fabricated and the african influences in it are east african. At best it is a stupid idea, at worst it's a deliberate attempt to create cultural friction.
>>98577737Having joggers participate in your traditions as opposed to culturally self-segregating is a good thing!?
>>98577737It's just a weird way of celebrating New Year's no one says Hogmanay celebrations in Scotland cause cultural friction with the rest of the UK; besides Kwanza is known to 99% of people only due to Futurama, where they make fun of it for being a completely superficial holiday
>>98576425West africa is pretty big, and you can add the navigable rivers in addition to the coast, and west africa was the majority, but not every single individual, so in total it's still tough to guess what culture your heritage is from as a black american even if parts of west africa is a reasonable guess.
>>98573578>diaspora population who have largely lost their cultural heritage>they get weird about the closest thing they can find, the actual continent, even if they don't necessarily know where they're from on itbig shocker
>>98576305This. The big whiteys "muh heritage" in the Us are irish and italian (and maybe polish), who amongst the big european waves were not so cool at the time.
>>98544828When it comes to building some fantasy for /tg/ stuff some parts of the old Bantu culture has some fun mythology involving electric fish.Like imagine a magic fish exists that if angered can cause things in the water with it to become stunned or die, or cause pain to a fisherman touching even the nets it's caught in. Clear, provable invisible magic. They had whole philosophies on life forces, vital or spiritual energies because of these fish. Because clearly these fish were using excess of life force to strike at their enemies.
>>98580310>Because clearly these fish were using excess of life force to strike at their enemies. Not entirely wrong...
>>98578702You're making it sound like you can't have an identity at all unless you knew the exact GPS coordinates of all of your ancestor's huts.If you know your ancestors are mostly Scandinavian, you still have an ethnic identity even if you don't know the exact village they were from. Most Europeans don't know the region their ancestors lived in four hundred years ago, let alone the exact village. The black identity problem in the US is that they are essentially the only population that I can think of that is exclusively made up of literal losers that were bought from their own people, were allowed to keep breeding in captivity and were eventually - uniquely - freed.
>>98544828I know Pathfinder has Garund, which is basically Africa. It's got Osirion (Egypt, and also origin of Nethys, the god of magic), Rahadoum, the Mwangi Expanse (Congo/Sub-Saharan Africa), and so on.
>>98575218Sounds like prestor john

its pretty crazy that whenever civilisation existed for basically an entire continent is an actual discution point , is even moer crazy me retarded don't know.
>>98563665since ancient times there have been no significant movement of people out of the sub-saharan part of the continent. The most connected were egyptians but mere contact doesnt mean a replacement. Egyptians have remained by large the same throughout the centuries with some intermingling with the occasional conquerors. They were conquered and culturally converted first by the greeks then by the romans then by the fatimids and later by the mamluks and then by the ottomans till muhammed ali passa (an albanian from modern day greece) overthrew them and declared independence till his line was overthrown to end with the modern state of egypt

>>98581349>no significant movement of people out of the sub-saharan part of the continentThat.. isn't at all true. Not because sub-Saharans as some kind of collective went out and successfully colonized or conquered, but because of the meaning of "significant". While they never wholesale displaced indigenous populations anywhere or ever built any functional (insofar that they became civilized, obviously a new village could be considered a form of colony) long-term colonies by themselves, there's certainly "significant" admixture in the North-African and Arabic populations, and any haplogroup map will show you as much.Hell, Ancient Egypt arguably fell due to the influx of sub-Saharan slaves eventually mixing with the population.>Egyptians have remained by large the same throughout the centuries with some intermingling with the occasional conquerors.A complete and utter fantasy.
>>98581376You don't get this creole-patterned pie chart by remaining "by large the same throughout the centuries". Throw a rock in Egypt and you're more likely to hit a miscegenized horror beyond comprehension than not.
>>98581325>no.So why in the world do you claim that Egypt is majority semitic?>are you denying that the majority population of the Arabic Republic of Egypt are ArabicA casual search shows that the genetic studies point to a majority of their genetics originating in pre-historic local populations. Since you've failed to provide anything to substantiate your claim that they are majority Semitic, I'm going to go with them not being genetically Semitic.>or that Arabs are Semites? The term covers Jews and Arabs and closely related populations, who descend from a shared ancestral group whose ethnogenesis is somewhere in Arabia.
>>98581296Before I disagree with you I just want to say that a lot of different baggage from the slave trade that you bring up is probably more important than the lack of knowing where their heritage is from. Denying that many african slaves were sold by other africans is strange to me, since several african countries have literally made formal apologies for their role in the slave trade. So I don't know what's up with the other anon, yours is a valid point.>>98580916No, my point was that West Africa is still big enough to maybe feel weird with identifying with all of it, and in any case some african slaves came from elsewhere. Ultimately black americans can be a lot less certain than most white americans, and that causes differences in related feelings. Or as another anon put it more succinctly: >>98578790 Its A factor, but to be fair not the only.West Africa is also massively bigger in area, population, ethnic and linguistic diversity than Scandinavia, a comparison with all of Northern Europe would be more apt. I get that it's not the exact analogy that's the point, but if someone can guess at is western africa, then you can't even be sure of what major language group you're from.
>>98582355Cheers, anon. I never claimed that Scandinavia was a one to one comparison (although it does geographically compare to the coastal area I mentioned). Picrel.I don't know enough about the ethnic and cultural sub-divisions of West Africa to be able to say either way. Do West African genetics cluster significantly further apart internally than say, Europeans do internally (including non-Indo-European Europeans)? If I woke up tomorrow and all I knew was that I was European, I'd still have ample identity, even though I wouldn't necessarily know which kind I was, or even if I was Indo-European or not. I probably wouldn't go all in on being Belgian or whatever, but I could certainly recreate a culture that would be recognizably European.
