I may be showing my age, but I loved Renegade Legion: Interceptor. That was a really fun game with an interesting way of dealing damage to the combatants. (A flow chart with dice directing where the damage travelled along the paths. Sometimes your fighter could tank an absurd amount of damage, and sometimes you went poof with one hit.)
>>98549826Star Trek Attack Wing remains the best space game on the market.
Full Thrust has some great custom ship rules. My gaming group spent a few months playing it as a break from 40k and found them to be quite balanced. I made ships with advanced drives with thrust 4 and advanced hulls and many 50% firing arc Beam 2s. The best part however is the writing orders and resolving simultaneously.
>>98551573No? No game that let's you reroll your rerolls is ever going to be the best and you know it. That said, as a source of hilarious jank, it is absolutely beyond compare. Also>on the market.Barely. Like, holy fuck this game is one of the worst stocked I've ever seen and it's a Wizkids game. Normally they're better than Asmodee at least, but here? It's honestly a shitshow getting product, let alone product you want... and good luck finding out information on what's actually in a pack or if there's anything interesting in the pipeline.Like, sure, I have some of this stuff myself, and I enjoyed my time with it... crazy broken upgrades which you can only get through tournaments and blindboxes and all, but NO, it is not the best.

>>98549826>What would your ideal space game be?A pre-painted (including shading and highlights), pre-assembled miniatures game with 6-12 large ships and a few dozen fighter support units per side, using plausible Newtonian vector movement, that allows for fully 3d play and a full 3-axis rotation of the models without the need for telescoping stands or the like. The ships should have a level of individual unit detail of an actual naval game or something like Battletech. The game should fully resolve in no more than 3 hours of play, and no turn should require longer than ~15 minutes. All of this must occur without the player being required to perform any math more complex than simple addition including no more than 4 total variables, and the vector movement itself must require no math from the player at all. Finally, the game under any circumstances must not be a "hard sci combat" game that amounts to hide-and-seek sensor checks followed by being instantly killed by a huge missile volley or an RKV weapon it's impossible to armor against; ships must degrade over time, barring golden BB shots.

>>98554272>without the need for telescoping stands or the likeWell how else would you do it? Have multiple boards stacked on top of eachother like third dimensional chess?
Man it's a shame just how cursed SW: Armada was. Like there's no other word for it. Losing wave 2 to pirates, the cargo ship with the SSD wave getting sunk. The game is constantly treated as the red-headed stepchild by FFG and it's an obvious vanity project by someone high enough they can't say no to. It's first wave is replete with legends content from the start, even the Core set has a Victory Star Destroyer, and then George sells to the Mouse and they toss all of the EU into a big burning bin so all of the various starships they'd been relying on for content are now gone. Then Asmodee forces AMG to take it on and everybody knew that was the end, it was just a question of how long it would take for the corpse to hit the floor. The only thing that people weren't expecting was that this was actually merciful compared to what they did to X-Wing.Game was good man. A bit weird and inscrutable in how it did activations, but fundamentally good.
>>98561366>Losing wave 2 to pirateswut
>>98563366A lot of it is rumours and hearsay, but it basically goes that one wave got stolen from the boat when it got hijacked around the horn of africa, and that another was sunk in a storm, and this was what caused the massive release delays in certain Armada waves.
>>98563377>A lot of it is rumours and hearsayAh ok. So you pulled it out of your ass. Got it.
There's also a prospective family of space combat games with two-dimensional fields whose axes do not represent a top-down view of flattened 2d space, but rather one axis represents position, the other velocity. Both examples going beyond minimally playable executions (Night Sky Falling and RADIOCLAD 2222) are, however, works in progress.
>>98561366"Was" good? Still is.
>>98549826I've only played one, which is Firestorm Armada 2.0. And that was basically perfect in my mind; certainly the best game Spartan ever produced by a country mile.>>98551591I've seen Full Thrust occasionally at a couple of clubs. Is it easy to get into?
>>98554092>>98551903So 40kiddie or not, can you refute that there appears to be crazy broken upgrades that you can only get through blind boxes or appearing at an official tournament?Because if true, the game is ass

>>98565848Between Star Trek Attack Wing, Star Wars Armada and Wizkid's Mechwarrior game, I've been spoiled lately by pre-painted models. I love them lmao

>>98564059He may have pulled it out of someone else's ass!
I like Void Admiral. Great game to play along a barbecue while the kids play in the pool
>>98567567Thats the charm of BFG. Imperial, Chaos, Tyranid and Ork forces. Their look can be modified to get a sort of individuality. To some extend Dark Eldar too.
>>98570566IIRC DE had two ship classes that were supposed to just be Imperial reporting names for ships of similar size, with a variety of customizable weapon options and the models themselves coming with some alternate part options to customize their look.
>>98569508Looks like it, thanks anon. Cool looking ships for Firestorm, I hadn't looked at it much.
>>98565551I wouldn't say Full Thrust is hard to get into. The main challenge is learning how to plan your moves by writing orders in advance and then resolving simultaneously. That's what takes the most time to get used to. I really recommend it, specifically playing with the custom ship rules.
>>98570595Dark Eldar had one cruiser and one escort model. They had 4 different wings/fins that could be mixed in two positions on the minis. But you could always place some thorns or blades all over the hull. Thats a DE thing, they like to add blades and thorns to their armor and vehicles. So their space ship can have that too.
>>98572332
Halo Fleet Battles was fucking kino. Why did it have to die? T_T
I played a bunch of Full Thrust back in the day with a couple of buds. The problem we found, especially in vector movement, was that you ended up with a deathball meta where there's no reason not to stack all your ships in a very small space. Was that just our local meta?
>>98572601How were the mechanics? I was never interested.
>>98572827No that's how my meta worked too. Because we were using the costume ship rules we basically all each ship was designed to be part of the blob and each ship filling a specific role.
>>98572601Because it's a very expensive license and Spartan Games were a motley crew operating out of an industrial estate in Somerset with a famously poor attention span and all the business nous of a hyperactive Jack Russel who just snaffled an entire pack of custard creams. Likely only selected by 343, an equally incompetent bunch of chancers because their company name sounded appropriate and with zero other market research. It was always doomed. And perhaps starting with a ship game first instead of a ground combat game, and not even including at any point official rules for the Pillar of Autumn, the original hero ship in the game either, were perhaps obviously recognizable missteps. That said, if you don't want something to be made into a Ship combat game, you probably shouldn't give your license to the people who only have one ruleset which they use for everything, and it's only good for ship combat games.Again. Zero market research. None. Like literally just a google search and an email and then off down the pub. That said, yeah. I agree. Not buying a starter set when I had the chance remains one of my great regrets in life.
>>98572831If you've played either old Dystopian Wars or Firestorm Armada then you have a basic idea. It's Firestorm Games joint. They only have the one ruleset really. To break it down, it still had the old buckets of dice mentality, with successes and exploding 6's for attacks. Same movement and activation is done via group now. Fighter rules were pretty much just BFG's if I recall right, with boarders have the option to plant a Nuke aboard enemy ships which was neat. The real USP were the large modular bases where you could plant multiple ships onto to form a different unit with different stats. Like a Marathon and two Paris Frigates on a single base would have different stats to a Marathon with a pair of Halberds. It looked really good on the table, plus there were specialized formations as well. Like a pair of Marathons together or similar mixes. You also had special Admiral superpowers that worked sort of like if abilities from DFC 2.0 were crossed with the Chain of Command dice system.Honestly, was it the best? No...? Was it A E S T H E T I C as fuck? Hell yes.
>>98572970>>98572827In fairness, this is probably pretty realistic.
>>98573815>their company name sounded appropriate and with zero other market research.top kek, I can believe it.
>>98572601Because Spartan was a shit company. Fleet Battles deserved better.
>>98557011I need to kidnap some people and force them to play BFG again. I miss playing that.
>>98572601Space games are a nishe. Than how many fleets or ships can you add till the customers have their full fleet? It is expected to end rather soon.
>>98573815Sounds like the worst company to exist. Or the worst luck that the wrong people all meet in a single company!
Another recommendation for Full Thrust. The movement system is by far the most fun.

>>98576267Spartan Games could be cockmonglers at times, but like I said, they were more like a company run by a hyperactive Cocker Spaniel. There's very little malice in them... but good luck getting them to focus on anything for a required length of time, and sometimes they will just fuck everything up.They still gave us some absolutely kino ship designs though.Although one of the guys responsible for that is still working in TTCombat for Dropfleet, and even now he will put out a banger. Although in that game he definitely peaked in 1st ed by and large.
No one mentioned Star Fleet Battles? Fucking kids these days.
>>98565551>>98570753>>98576934I spent years collecting Spartan models, even ran a few convention games of DW, but never got to play FSA. Models are sure fun to paint, though.
>>98579371I wish I was around to enjoy SFB at its peak popularity.>>98549826>Thread QuestionSFB but with the license to TMP/TNG etc era shows too.
>>98579371>>98579933I've been fucking around with making a Cardassian Wars era module ACTA Star Fleet. During a playtest I had a New Orleans vaporize an Excelsior by putting 3 photons through it's shields. Torpedoes are no joke when they decide to work, especially with the 6 ignores shields rule.
>>98580473ive always loved the various ACTA games even if it seems at times that Mongoose is cursed to never keep a successful miniatures game in production. Noble Armada died way too early after just one supplement which sucked as i really liked that one and would have loved to see it develop the depth and breath of rules and ships that B5 had. I liked Star Fleet too even though the armadillo guy threw an autistic fit and basically subsumed it. it has always baffled me that they never made an ACTA Traveler.
>>98579371I mean, what more can even be said about that monster from the seventies? Other than a fuck you to Mongoose Games for fucking up their ACTA trunk as badly as they did. Man, we had such high hopes for that. We had their conversion method worked out within days and were pumping out whole star nations. I actually got the Hydrans done alongside fighter rules. I wanted to use the Fading Suns boarding rules as well, but that would have meant doing Seltorians and at the time Mongoose were pretending they were going to support the game and give Tholians better rules. Yeah, none of those things happened. But I did at least do the rules for PSF's and Space Control ships while I was at it.I really wanted to do Lyrans, but I could not for the life of me work out how I was going to do the ESG.
>>98576934>run by a hyperactive Cocker SpanielOr they had to concentrate on profitable projects. Maybe what feels like less attention was just that this wasnt generating money to keep attention and manpower on? So they had to splitt betwenn moneymaking games and low profile games.
>>98579371>Literally 30 year old gameThe future is now, old man!
>>98583147No. That wasn't it. Trust me. Even if Halo wasn't pulling in money, which I doubt, the amount they spent on that license meant they needed to focus on it completely. They proceeded to pump out at least three more game systems, none of which used the license instead, to say nothing of the 3mm Post-45 WW2 Game called Operation Gotterdamerung that they tried to curry up interest in at SALUTE once. They were in the middle of trying the old Kickstarter scam with a bad X-Wing knockoff when Wayland Games moved in on them. Spartan Games were FAMOUS for never properly supporting their established games and going off to do some new system instead. If they'd been sensible, they'd have focused on Dystopian Wars and Firestorm Armada and nothing else until Halo and then shifted all their resources to that and developing the ground game concurrently. Instead they pumped out multiple new games and model lines unreleated to that, one of which Firestorm Planetfall, only existing because they noticed that Dave who had since left them to found Hawk Wargames was having success with DZC and they wanted to troll him.
>>98584382>30 yearsCloser to 50 I think you'll find.
>>98584539I am actually turning to dust holy fuck
>>98584569Honestly, it's kind of incredible they've managed not to do anything to lose that license in all that time, and that they're still here as well. An old Testament juggernaut from the very beginning of all things still roaming about inviolate in these modern times.
>>98584539This should be illegal.

I recently got a copy of the original ACTA Star Fleet book, from before the bugs were worked out. I haven't noticed any problems with it as it is in the few times I've played it. It's been fun so far and I'd love to have more content for it. Shame that it seems to have died so early on.
>>98581148B5 was my first space game, and my group played a lot of Victory at Sea back in the day, so it's always been a favorite of mine. I'm trying to keep everything as close to the base game as possible for simplicity. I am shifting the scale aggressively though since TNG ships are so much bigger. My last playtest was a New Orleans vs Vorcha, Vorcha blew the NO in half on the second turn. I need to remember that 1v1 doesn't work with ACTA and do 3v3.

>>98557011Bfg BUT with some special rules for the imperial navy would be my perfect space game. Imperial ships are so fucking cool but kinda boring to play compared to all the other factions. Why do Deldar or rogue traders have like 10 special rules and all the imperium has are nova cannons? I get that they are " GOOD STATS- LOW COST" the faction but gimme something interesting to work with while listbuilding.
>TQI don't know about ideal, but I'd like to see a smaller scale but higher detail equivalent of a BFG/Aeronautica hybrid, focused on escorts and strike craft, with the absolute largest vessel capping out at light cruiser.
>>98584532Will back this anon up. Whoever was on the model design team was/were top level. IMO the old Dys Wars ship sculpts still outclass the chibi mobile game stuff that Warcradle are throwing out, and while i never got into Armada it was the same level, though I think the physical size of the ships hurt them a bit; when I saw them at a con they were about 1.5+ times the size of an equivalent BFG ship, from memory and it did put me off, storage-wise.Sadly, the actual business team did not achieve the same level. Ooh Squirrel is an accurate representation, and from knowing people who sub-contracted for painting and modelling services, they were at least knobhead-adjacent.I actually have a box of Planetfall in the garage somewhere; should dig it out and paint it properly now.

>>98565551I've still got a soft spot for uncharted seas, but firestorm was definitely very good. really I like all the Spartan engine games except DW, which was a bloated mess, and 28mm DW which was pointless. and the halo ground game which couldn't decide what scale it wanted to be and never got finished. Yes to full thrust being good.
>>98587582Well, for a bit of it, it was Dave formerly of Hawk Wargames. If you want to know what he's upto these days, sadly TTCombat bought him out and he's basically doing most of the modelling for DZC and DFC.Dropfleet does occaisionally throw out the odd banger. The Scourge Battleships are all pretty good, and visually the new Battlecruiser kit has never looked better... even if the rules for the new stuff are ass. His resistance stuff is top fucking tier though, easily on par with some of his firestorm highlights.
>>98589073>I've still got a soft spot for uncharted seasSame. I miss my Bone Griffons fleet and their guided whale torpedoes.
>>98586201Imperials are the standard army. But they have certain extra rules. Nova like you mentioned. The 6+ prows. The dorsal lances. And you get alot of weapon choices. Other armies have less cruiser options or even mix. When you want extra stats than you have to go for Space Marines or Adeptus Mechanicus.
>>98587424You mean from a miniature point of view? Understandable. But gameplay wise you can just play BFG and limit your fleet to escorts and light cruisers.
>>98589248Dave does essentially ALL of the modeling for both games, and in that respect they're still great. model designs for the drop commander games absolutely slap.the rules are now managed by others and have never really gotten back to being as good as the first editions of those games.
>>98589531More akin to a space version of Cruel Seas, where mechanically escorts would be more than 1 hit vessels than they are in BFG and strike craft were more than just simple markers. BFG is already kind of a perfect game, and these mechanics would bog it down on a larger scale.
>>98590917I would guess the rules dont change. Just the hull points had to be increased for the escorts and you need stats for the ordnance.
>>98586201A game but my models must be the most special of the special guys and the best at everything. GW people are such a cancer.
>>98591488Right, everything would be effectively promoted up a size class: escorts would become cruisers, strike craft would be escorts, and light cruisers would become battleships.
>>98587424A trench run on the Planet Killer with a similar design as Bommerz over da Sulphur River would be cool. >>98592706Sounds like a Space Hulk campaign.
>>98595962It doesn't look like the frenchies were changing much of the rules for Bommerz over da Sulphur River which doesn't fit imperial fighters with randomized movement. The random movement rate and pushing your luck was a significant component of the game. I think it could work with a more planned out movement allowance where you balance speed vs ability to juke and otherwise not get hit but the map would have to become wider with more paths I think. I'll put it on the backburner and see what percolates. I'm too fond of Wings of Glory to not consider some sort of preplanned card movement mechanism but I think its the wrong fit for being a reflex and twitch based reaction sort of vibe. >>98596793Could do something with a modular map so its a variety of ships. Imperial on one side, Chaos on the other for the basic kit and an Orks & Eldar, Necrons and nids, expansions.
>>98597139When you go for other races than a Space Hulk is better. The reason to have all those armies meeting in space. Maybe Orks and Nids would do boarding attacks. But besides Space Marines, i cant see any other races that want to enter a Chaos super ship.
Looking into Dropfleet commander, those ship stats are too much. That are stats you find in a videogame or P&P game.
>>98598581The Imperium usually sends the Imperial Guard. >>98602956Lol.>>98604536That it is complex and makes the game very slow.
>>98573815>>98572601To add, unlike star wars where getting the license guarantees at least some amount of a preexisting fanbase, very few halo fans would be interested in a space battle tabletop game. Space battles in that franchise had always been window dressing, with one exception that wasn't particularly well liked.
>>98606010There was a decent amount in the original Fall of Reach novel. But yes. 343 did no research and gave their license to the people who only make naval combat games, and got a naval combat game as a result, because said people were called "Spartan Games" and 343 vaguely remembered that term had SOMETHING to do with this multi-billion dollar franchise that Microsoft in their greed and arrogance had handed to them to NOT DO LITERALLY EVERY SINGLE THING THAT THEY HAVE DONE WITH IT.
>>98606010Good point. Most Halo fans want Halo videogames, not tabletops. There is a fan group who likes and buy actionfigures or statues. And from those there is a probably a part that like tabletop and minifigures.
>>98605944>8 statsIf you're going to count group size you might as well says they have 11 and count name, class and point cost while you're at it.You also include the BS stat which is basically an hedgehog special rule, so might as well bump that up to 12 statsDon't stop there call the ship picture a stat too, an anon could be so retarded as to need to look that up too>Weapons have 5 statsAre you counting arcs as a stat here ? Is this a capital ship only thread, or are space fighter games (not Xwing) actually welcome too? I ask because one of our local Battletech guys is pushing something called Silent Death recently, and I wanted to find more about it, but the publisher looks dead. Is this a good fighter game to get in to?
>>98609322Seems well within the remit of >Discuss spaceship games.>Show off painted spaceships.>Talk about spaceships.and anons were talking about fighter attacks on capital ships, as well as boarding actions. Haven't played Silent Death, its generally well spoken of and you can still get some of the ships from EM4 miniatures. Rules are on scribid.
>>98609322Yes. Fighter games are welcome.
Anyone looked into Star Squadron? Looks pretty sweet ngl but always weary of backing kickstarters or kickstarter-esque things
>>98607707How Microsoft handled halo probably should go into textbooks as a prime example of How NOT to handle a franchise.Right next to Disney and Star Wars, or Paramount and Star Trek.
>>98613884The biggest problem is mindless pandering to a group or a trend. But isnt this a normal company behaviour? Since advertisment exist, companies are chasing trends.
>>98614917Their problem is that they 100%, completely lost track of what they were selling, and why they had customers in the first place. They forgot that they had customers who turned into fans because they made great games 20 years ago.The trend chasing and aimless flailing around to regain some 'untapped market' or 'gain new audiences' is just a result of them forgettign the basics. This is what you get when a bunch of C-suits types, HR karens and marketing yes-men basically go 'Hello fellow gamers, wouldn't you like to buy some New Experiences from us?'FWIW, the very same thing happened to more than one RPG, though those just tend to get quietly cancelled without fanfare.
>>98615332Chasing the mythical modern wider audience is insane. Its like trying to build a house the fits the needs of the poor, rich, singles, couples, families, multi generational family, city lover, outdoor lover, bike hater/lover, car hater/lover. Close to everything and further away. You can physically do it so you have to choose what type of house you are going to build. But for some fucking reason entertainment is fixated in this mythical consumer that is physically impossible to exist.
>>98549826What's the opinion on Star Wars: Armada around here?

Still need to figure out quite how to represent drastic differences in technology, the changes in system numbers every decade don't quite capture the full differences I'm looking for.
>>98642943go loose with the 'era' restrictions since you'e not IN star trek, but instead go by how 'advanced' the expy setting is relatively. for example, OG bsg you go with free eletron lasers and such, no shields, ablative armour, cannons, point defence, etc.but say you want to stat a shadow vesel, well, then you may want to use the st era of the 25th century so it has the most points in everything etc.
>>98645833>since you'e not IN star trek, but instead go by how 'advanced' the expy setting is relativelyI guess I forgot to say I want to do crossovers between Star Trek and other franchises, but yeah this is how I've been handling it. Still doesn't fully capture how I see it in my mind where a massively more advanced ship should be capable of blowing a primitive one away in a shot or two, but duels between equivalent ships should take more time, but hopefully I'll figure it out with enough tweaking sooner or later.
please remember you can modulate shields taskswift action momentum spendmodulate shields taskas one 'action' for a character or ship(npc) which increases resistance. to whit"MODULATE SHIELDS: This Task has a Powerrequirement of 1, and cannot be attempted if theShields are at 0. The Tactical officer attempts a Control+ Security Task, assisted by the ship’s Structure +Engineering, with a Difficulty of 2. If successful, theship’s Resistance is increased by +1, plus an additional+1 per Momentum spent (Repeatable). This bonus lastsuntil the next time the ship suffers one or more damage, after Resistance."so if you take say a scale 3 defiant with ablative armour for 5 resistance and harden the shields twice against the enemy's specific attacks you can easily bank that 5 up to space station levels of resistance at about say 12+ with the momentum you're generating from phasers' versatile 2and unless something goes over said resistance you take 0 dmg. STA shields act like proper star trek shields, not kuntzmann / bad robot anti trek 'shields' that may as well not even fucking be switched on for all the god they ever do.

Just another opinion that Full Thrust is probably the most mechanically interesting space battle game. Ships build momentum from turn to turn, there are very in-depth but intuitive ship design rules and the simultaneous resolution of players turns makes it play like nothing else.
I'm working on my own since there really aren't that many space battle games out there. Tried asking some advice on rules in the amateur game design general but didn't get any answers. Anyone here have good ideas for handling cluster hits from torpedoes and such without the use of a BT-style cluster table? Currently I have the attacker roll 2d6 on the table, with penalty based on the target's point defense value, to determine how many of the torpedoes in the cluster actually hit the target, but constantly checking the table during playtest felt like it slowed things down a lot.
>>98692156Define what you mean by cluster hits more specifically.
>>98692193Basically, in the current rules torpedoes are tokens that represent a group of torpedoes and have a cluster value indicating how many torpedoes the the token represent (4, 8, or 16, depending on the amount of tubes in the launcher). When the token makes contact with a ship you roll on a table, with rows for each cluster size and columns for the possible roll results, to determine how many of the torpedoes hit the ship, then multiply the result by the damage value of the torpedo. Point defense gives penalties to the roll, with a roll results of 1 or less after applying the penalty indicating that no hits were scored. I was thinking of replacing it with just rolling 1d6 times the cluster size, with every roll of 2+ indicating a hit, and point defense increasing the target number by 1 for each point of PD value the target ship has (most capital ships have PD values of 1 or 2, with cruisers generally having 1 and battleships 2). But having to roll 16d6 for the big torpedo clusters is kind of awkward. Ideally I would want to avoid having to redo all the ship record sheets I've made since I already had to do it once, so I'm trying to figure out a rules change that lets me keep the stats intact.
>>98692156Such things always depends on how the rest of your combat system works. But a simple way of doing it is to just not do it, if you shoot a spread or torpedoes or a shotgun blast of crap or a salvo of full auto or whatever then just have it all add up to one, single attack instead of trying to track each and every projectile.
>>98692238It's a lot of dice but I think your second option is better. Consulting tables will slow the game down more than rolling more dice. Do you have a mechanic for escort destroyers contributing their point defense to the capital ships they're guarding?
>>98692315>if you shoot a spread or torpedoes or a shotgun blast of crap or a salvo of full auto or whatever then just have it all add up to one, single attack instead of trying to track each and every projectile. That's the whole idea of the cluster table. Rather than track each individual torpedo or drone, they are represented by a single token and you roll to determine how many of them actually hit and multiply the result by their damage. I use a similar system for direct-fire weapon batteries, but for those I can easily just remove the clyster table and always have them deal full damage if they hit. For torpedoes I'm hesitant to do that since they're kind of balanced around the idea that you rarely hit with the entire cluster so making them always deal max damage would probably make them too deadly, and not being able to reduce the amount of hits would also make point defense useless. I could also make PD work as kind of an "armor save", but making it all-or-nothing would make things really swingy, with torpedo salvoes either deleting a ship or doing nothing, depending on how well you roll.>>98692369>Do you have a mechanic for escort destroyers contributing their point defense to the capital ships they're guardingYes, but it currently only applies to ones equipped with laser weapons (they can choose to set their weapons in point defense mode, making them unable to use them for attacking but letting them add to the PD-value of any ship within their short range), which only one faction makes a lot of use of. Other factions have interceptors, which are tokens that can destroy torpedoes when moving into contact with them.Pic related is an example of a capital ship stat sheet. I'd post the full rules document, but 4chan no longer lets you share pdfs.
I still like your ships, but I feel like you're over thinking things. For my own game I just roll to hit for each seeker fired, and point defencse is just a straight penalty to hit. I still use a single token for the salvo, I just put a die or two on it to show how big the swarm is. I'm using 2d6 resolution though, so I stole the pilot die mechanic from Alpha Strike. The biggest wrinkle I have is that seekers hit on the next turn after launch, unless they're at half range or less.
>>98692473Cool. I read your sheet and it looks very well thought out.
>>98692920I cribbed a lot of stuff from BT/AS as well, with 2d6 used for most rolls (and 1d6 for the rest). For direct-fire weapons I just have a single roll for the gun-battery, with penalties or bonuses from range and relative size (battleship guns have a harder time hitting a small and mobile target like a destroyer) plus things like ECM, with the damage of the battery inflicted in one chunk, except when shooting at squadrons of subcapitals, where you randomize which member of the squadron each gun hits (like how damaging battle armor works in BT). But for torpedoes and drones I wanted them to be tokens on the map that you have to take into account when maneuvering, and didn't feel like it makes sense to roll for gunnery skill when they make contact with a target since it could be a turn or two after firing and should be out of the crew's hands by then.Pic related is one of the ships equipped with torpedoes, so you can get an idea what their stats look like.
>>98692040>Just another opinion that Full Thrust is probably...gay.
>>98694857I mean, really gunnery skill doesn't matter at all since the computer should be doing all the work, unless you're doing a dieselpunk thing. Honestly though the only real difference between charts and dice pools is feel, as long as you set your numbers right. I dislike charts from playing too many boomer games, so I favor the dice pool system myself.I think Squadron Strike does what you're trying to do though. I don't have my books handy, but from memory it has a Large Salvo Table. You figure out the average number of hits for your given range and accuracy, then roll dice to get a spread. Ken has a fetish for a 2d10 subtraction roll which I think is used here, but I don't remember the details. I'll see if I can find it at some point.Sorry if my explanations aren't clear. I don't sleep much and my brain is blurry on the best of days.
I decided to update the rules to get rid of the cluster table, and did some other small fixes at the same time. Unfortunately, I can't post the pdf here.
>>98692156>but constantly checking the table during playNot naval combat system but I avoided that by using the near miss on the die to hit other parts than what was targeted. It's 3d10 keep the middle so it'll need some adaptation.Point being you hit on a tight target, say 5-6, but rolling outside of that give you a hit higher or lower on the table compared to what you aimed for.So say on a human targetaim center mass, roll 3, hit the legsaim chest area, roll 6, hit thereaim head, roll 7, shot flies overetc...

>>98711473Thanks for the rec, but not really. The thing I'm looking for is something that captures the distance and speed of orbital intercepts.Every game has ships/fighters show up to the same spot of space and then fly around that unmoving spot, like it's some spot in the ocean or patch of sky. That's about as far from how orbits work or how things move through space as actual chemistry is from the classical elements (earth, air, water, fire).Honestly, I don't think it can be handled well in a wargame and is better suited to a two-stage board game (3d orbital maneuvering phase and then 1d combat during the intercept).

I skimmed the discussion but have you considered having the defender roll PD dice and make it subtractive to incoming value (lump damage or cluster hits)? It might help to keep players engaged and give some small sense of being able to do something in the face of an attack.
>>98711400I always wanted to like the Battletech space game but it is SHITE and I genuinely hold it is one of the worst game systems ever designed. Whoever was on the design team for it should have the top 17mm of their penis removed with a dull butter knife.
>>98723482That could work, and could remove the current "roll 16d6" problem by making so the full cluster hits by default but you reduce the amount of hits by the result of your PD dice roll, though unless I redo all the stat sheets again point defense would currently be too weak since for most ships you negate an average of 3 torpedoes from a flight of 16. Also unless I also kept rolling for torpedo hits (in which case you'd still be rolling 16d6), there'd be no way to account for difference in size class between target and weapon (currently heavier torpedoes deal more damage but have harder time hitting small targets).
What should the consequences be for firing guns inside a ship in Traveller? I'm working on setting up a game for my friends using MgT1, and I'm wondering if I should set up some sort of random table or something for every time they let loose in shipboard combat; maybe with a modifier if they use soft-target ammo like glasers or something.
>>98727748The punchline is that the normal BTech ruleset, or at least the concept of it, with it's very crunch locational hit, leaky internal damage mechanics and heat management would actually work really well as a space game. Hell it would make MORE sense with regards to the heat management.
>>98730517 Without knowing much about the system, I can't really say much. Given how much targeting is reliant on computers/technology, I imagine hitting is pretty automagic unless maybe it's spread out intentionally in a blotting attack to cover the possibility of ECM creating deviations. That said, ECM could also be rolled into the defensive dice but it all also kind of depends on how granular you want to get. Speaking of granular, I randomly mused about weapon failure rates while typing this.
>>98732221 I suppose it depends on how the ship is constructed, where they're firing the weapon, and what kind of weapon it is. A military ship might be more hardened to varying degrees if they expect boarding actions and hull breaches. A civilian ship, maybe less so. Especially when you think about fuel economy and the like.
>>98732667I'd share the rules but 4chan no longer lets you post pdfs. Anybody know a good way to share files?Having to roll for hits is largely a game mechanic constraint, since turning everything into laser-tag where you instantly hit the enemy from across the board isn't very interesting. The in-universe justification is that all ships come equipped with ECM, and the ECM component some ships have represents more powerful active ECM that further affects targeting.
>>98734440>I'd share the rules but 4chan no longer lets you post pdfs.In fairness to 4chan, when it did, a PDF nearly killed the entire website, because hiroshimoot literally hadn't upgraded ANYTHING since he bought the wretched thing from Moot.
>>98734440The sharethreads here use gofile, so there is thatSome random thoughts. Depending on characteristics of the torpedoes, you might be able to steal some irl tactical options to make combat more interesting: For missiles and torpedoes, they don't turn all that great but are damned fast. Fighter aircraft and ships, respectively, have the option to turn into the oncoming weapon, forcing the attack to turn (if possible for the weapon in question) and hopefully miss because it can't keep up on the turn and eventually lose targeting on its sensors. They'll also eventually lose propellant at some point. I don't remember if there was a difference between beaming and notching but there's a maneuver with aircraft where you attempt to adjust your position and speed to a missile where you hide in the clutter/filter of its radar. For space, I imagine it would work best in an asteroid field or other cluttered space. Or just dumping a ton of chaff to just fuck the whole place up on return signals. I'm pretty sure a bunch of those techniques still work to some degree, especially with all the old stock we're seeing get rolled out and blasted through as things go hot these days. Likely a little less effective with more modern sensors but the cost of a fancy missile/torpedo that can maneuver extremely well and/or have great sensors would cost a fuckton and that impacts magazine depth, which is all the rage these days. Also of note, in a brief discussion not so long ago, I learned that a certain torpedo was classified as a mine. It basically gets dumped some place and lays in wait, passively listening. When something matches its parameters, it wakes up and attacks. I don't know if the US is the only one that classifies this type as a mine, vaguely remember seeing the Indians had something similar.
>>98735475Unfortunately when I tried to upload to gofile it just failed. Didn't specify why so I'm not sure how to fix it.I did take the ability to use positioning to dodge torpedoes into account by making them move fast but have very limited ability to turn. So with positioning you should be able to get out of the way of incoming torpedoes. Drones/strike-craft by contrast deal less damage but are better able to turn, making avoiding them harder.
>>98736168>tried to upload to gofile it just failed.Well that's unfortunate. It sounds like development is coming along well and I'm glad you asked around for some feedback to gain additional perspective. Maybe it's because I don't hang out on /tg/ as much these days, but I've seen complaints that /tg/ doesn't get as much done as it used to in a not too distant past. Hope your game gets some real legs, Anon!
