>>98550282Rather than an overt dark lord, make him something like a Wandering Stranger. He never amasses armies in his own name or establishes some great evil citadel. He simply passes through the world in various guises. In one generation he is a minor advisor to some king, in another he may pose as a travelling merchant. Sometimes he appears as an unknown vagabond. But tendrils of evil spread from him and conspiricies swirl around him. He somehow is never eradicated, always vanishing at the point when the house of cards is collapsing and whoever is piecing things together gets too close to him

His commanders might believe his rhetoric, but deep down he is just seething that as a mortal all of his accomplishments are doomed to turn to dust, while the gods are eternal.No longer. He will rise up and supplant the gods. And if apotheosis is denied him, if he cannot become a god? Then let there be no more gods at all. If that power cannot be his, then no one else will have it either. He will live forever, or the world will die with him.This sets up a fun bit where he can be gathering power for his ascension, the party can stop him, and thats actually WORSE because now he shifts to his much more unhinged 'plan b' which is "kill the gods and if the world falls apart without them so be it" for a higher stakes round 2. Alternatively, if you can establish that this was always his plan B, if the players FAIL to stop him from becoming a god as his plan A... its already established that a way to kill the gods exists. You can use his own plan B against him, if you can figure out what it was

Had the villain take the king and princess hostage so the players would have to find some McGuffin to unlock a vault that contained ancient powerful relics but he really just wanted access to the regular treasures. Then something changed, their civilisation was destroyed by it, and humans/elves/all that shit arose in the warped nightmare dimension that followed (i.e. the PCs' normal lives).The BBEG wants to reset the world to how it was when their kind were in ascendance, and destroying the disgusting aberration that is the current world order is an incidental goal (although BBEG also probably hates and is revolted by them).
