>Current Book Club Topic:
>"The Masque of the Red Death" by Edgar Allan Poe
Fucking spooky anon I literally read this story last night without checking this thread.
It's interesting to see how 'archaic' the wording and sentence structure is compared to modern fiction. I don't understand the layout of the different rooms. I thought they were different rooms but people in the party walk through several of them as if they're like a furiniture show room with no walls? I dunno it was weird and confusing to me and obvs Edgar Ellen Poe didn't intend this part to be.
Overall though it was very interesting spoilers, having the plague physically manifest as a person, and these great lines,
>There are chords in the hearts of the most reckless which cannot be touched without emotion.
>Even with the utterly lost, to whom life and death are equally jests, there are matters of which no jest can be made.
Pure poetry
(pic somewhat realted, its interesting how the Red Death may of help inspire the King in Yellow)
>>
>>98570206
>I don't understand the layout of the different rooms. I thought they were different rooms but people in the party walk through several of them as if they're like a furiniture show room with no walls?
This might not have been what Poe meant, but could it just be that the different rooms were connected in series by doorways directly between them, rather than using a connecting hallway? I've seen that kind of design used in some old buildings.
>>
Delta Green: How big a problem is skill overlap? I'm making an FBI Agent, but we already have Forensics, Bureaucracy, and HUMINT covered by a State Trooper.

If it's a problem, I may change to a CIA Agent or NSA Cryptographer.

I've been thinking of putting together an urban horror/weird fiction setting based on the works of Thomas Ligotti (similar to Cthulhu City from Trail of Cthulhu) for our Esoterrorists campaign. Something akin to a modern-day Mirocaw/Nortown/degenerate little town somewhere in the American Rust Belt.
Any good anons that can offer some pointers for sources of inspiration?
>>
>>98572523

Sad!
>>
>>98572765
Well there's Ligotti's The Red Tower. There's also the classic shadows over innsmouth whose themes can always be ported over to any dying once-prosperous town. Have you ever read that JD Vance book? It's pretty good at being scornful of Appalachian hicks which aren't the same thing as rust belters but the "degenerative decline" of their respective peoples linked to the economy tracks pretty well.

>>
>>98570562
More variety is better but overlaps aren't useless because what your colleague can be unavailable (i.e. incapacitated, requesting backup from niggerman due to sanity loss etc.). HUMINT is probably worth having an extra because sometimes only you will be exposed to some people. Iirc Bureaucracy allows requesting stuff from YOUR agency so doubling up might be good.

Really? I quite liked the way they intersperse some Scooby-Doo mundanity amid the actual ghosts. Especially when there is a spook in the background doing something unrelated to the scheme of the week. Can't say any tension survives the frequent use of "I funked it" but that's linguistic drift for you.

...Liberal memeplex?

>>98572523
We're there at least any musical numbers?

>>98574383
The Tower's output is especially appropriate for Esoterrorists given it's random unsettling junk that hints at deeper malevolence. Extra points if the town's surrounds can be made to seem like the Grey Wastes (drought followed by wildfires and dust bowl?).

>>98556809
Had fun running the Tyger a while back. TLDR a memetic equivalent to the xenomorph's body horror infestation-reproduction cycle. The end result was Borges's Zahir crossed with a cyborg war-machine, it made a point not to kill people much like a cat playing with mice. Instead the rumbling purrs echoed in the ears, the pattern of stripes haunted the eyes and the meres scratch itched like a fractal

Players were convinced that it was hacking them somehow and started "de-auging" the disposable bodies they were decanting into. Didn't do a thing, the medium of infection was the information itself. Ultimately a Lovecraft lite game (PCs are horrors in their own right) so they Shere Khan'd it (IE worked out that the thing was the distorted upload of a literal cat, a cat terrified of napalm even though its new chassis was immune).

>the rules are some PBTA adjacent thing
What made you think it's a PBTA thing? It's obviously an OSR clone.

The system's solid, it's quick and easy to whip shit up for and the way characters usually only die from stat death or inventory overflow makes pacing out adventures way better than a lot of the horror crawlers I've played. Most of the modules I've played with friends are closer to modern-setting dungeoncrawls instead of actual investigations, which is a rare treat for horror systems.
>>
>>98577192
Ah. It's homebrew; "the Tyger" is how I prefer to think of it ("fearful symmetry" and all that). I want to refine the parts piecemeal in the hopes of one day springing my dream campaign on some unsuspecting players. Progress is slow and uncertain but one must imagine Sisyphus happy.

It's boring as fuck, no pathos, no horror. Lovecraft dissed it already back then.

Yeah it's a (nu)SR based on Into the Odd or whichever one has the same stat drain and anti-gangup mechanics.

>Most of the modules I've played with friends are closer to modern-setting dungeoncrawls instead of actual investigations, which is a rare treat for horror systems.

We started with some of the short one-shot dungeons in the third-party Liminal Grimoire book, and moved on to homebrewed dungeons after getting through with the ones we wanted. No clue how the big book-sized dungeons are supposed to work, but I'm assuming it's going to work pretty similarly, just replace "retreat to camp" with "retreat to a safe place" and "hire on a new party member" with "have someone take over an NPC Associate character".

Me and a friend started working on a Delta Green campaign. Let me know what you think of the basic plot idea
>First adventure is similar to the start of Iconoclasts, where it's a bit of a prologue story. The players play as some pre-gen civilians that run one of those paranormal exploration Youtube channels, and they enter an abandoned military bunker in Mississippi.
>The bunker, unknown to them, happens to contain an Avatar of Y'golonac that they accidentally free when trying to escape after a Delta Green team shows up, having been notified of activity, as they monitored the area.
>The Avatar breaks free and makes its way south to New Orleans
>The actual campaign starts here, with the first real adventure being tracking down where the Avatar went.
>The Avatar has the ability to transform those who look upon it, hear its voice or otherwise linger for too long around it. These transformed people are called "Angels" and they are nightmares given form
>The Avatar hides inside a mausoleum of a family patriarch in the graveyard, and when his family visited his grave for the tenth anniversary of his passing, they all became corrupted, all turning into Angels(each one modeled after one of the 7 deadly sins because we're creatively bankrupt like that)
>The core of the campaign is finding the location of Y'golonac, finding a way to trap him again and destroying or containing the Angels and the cults forming around them.
>Y'golonac's influence also affects the minds of the people of New Orleans, corrupting them and making them surrender to their base desires. There's far more crime, violent and sexual, and the Agents have to cover a lot of it up, especially the high profile stuff, to not draw attention
There's a lot of other stuff too, like tracking down the Testaments of Glaki, and the fact that the Cthulhu Cult of Louisiana is a faction that is trying to help the Agents against what they see as a rival god, but that's the basic idea for the campaign.
Thoughts?
>>
>>98586695
Is the intro a cutscene style thing or are you going to trap them between agents and the hidden El Golonac?
>>
>>98586866
It's not really an adventure and more akin to an optional one session railroad that exists to set the mood for the campaign proper. But it wouldn't be a cutscene, they actually would be playing through it. And yes, it would end up with them standing in the middle of delta green and the Avatar. One of them would actually get turned into an Angel, albeit different from the main 7 Angels.
Note that the agents in the intro are not the agents the players will actually be playing as for the campaign proper. The intro agents will get slaughtered.

It's technically not a board game. There aren't really fixed terrain setups or boards and it's gridless. Mechanically, however, it still feels like it was designed as a board game first and turned into a skirmish game later. If that makes sense.

>>
>>98601897
How so? Sure it's a nice unnerving story but I don't see much of a gameplay potential here beyond "average people get trapped in a hostile place, must escape to survive" which is an ok if generic premise for a one-shot, not campaign. What am I not seeing here?
>>
>>98601897
>>98602722
I think it might work for something like Fear Itself. The TV shows From and Widow's Bay both manage to play "Small Town You Can't Escape With Something Wrong" pretty well and would probably be good inspiration as well.
>>
>>98593826
I think it would focus more around avoiding the 'attention' of Thin Mountain and figuring out how to free oneself of its influence completely. And obviously there would be a B plot of some lunatic occultist trying to force Thin Mountain's influence onto EVERYONE that the investigators/agents have to stop.

The God in the Bowl, The Scarlet Citadel, and Xuthal of the Dusk are all very much horror forward sword and sorcery stories. Are there games that actually work with this sort of feeling? Bronze age horror seems like you can do it with something like Glorantha, Chaos and the activities of some of the more out there enemies of the bestiaries as well as everything going on in that nightmare of the Lunar Empire definitely seem like it but I don't know if anyone can suggest a system to look into that can sort of lean into it a bit more or if I'm just gonna have to GURPS it up.

As a publisher author and poet in weird literary circles, but, more importantly, as someone who has run Call of Cthulhu since 2018, I don’t think Lovecraft’s stories can be translated to an interactive game. Even the whodunnit nature of detective work in CoC is barely the same as the antiquarian research of Lovecraft’s characters. The cosmic dread of being so insignificant can only be shown in sanity loss scenes where you strip the characters of any agency.

You CAN, technically, do that with Lovecraftesque. My experience is that while it is a good game, the result is that you'd have to been dead-centered on HPL to do it tough - you tend to more or less get the structure (meaning yes, no detective shit) but not the vibes.

It's something I've been homebrewing, but it's literally just Cyberpunk readjusted to play with Call of Cthulhu scenarios because I can't be bothered talking my friends into playing in yet another system. I'm working on it still. Trying to write some oneshots to set the mood. I have this hate for scenarios where GM has to run scenario like a film instead of just a quick and easy setup with characters, locations and shit that kicks off the story. What I'm writing is a scenario about a blank vinyl record that may or may not summon demons, cosmic horrors or just a nasty cyber virus depending on your playstyle. My idea is to have cyber freaks tempted to go one step further, contacting the supernatural to gain an edge.

Most of the horror in CP is how much people replace their body parts willingly, and there's some psychological damage from failed jacking out. I think most of the horror in such settings should come from the players themselves doing something bad. The actual horror entities are sugar on top.

Transference
a CyberCthulu/Darktime Scenario by Chris Hockabout and John Tynes
Transference is the second part of a two part story that started in issue #7 of The Unspeakable Oath. Transference is a stand alone scenario who's ideas are related to the scenario publilshed in TUO #7: Convergence. One does not have to have read Convergence to run Transference, and the fact that Convergence takes place thirty years before Transference makes running them one after another a little implausable without modification. Transference serves best to kick start a Dark Time CyberCthulhu campaign, with this scenario leading the players into deep and dangerous territory as they set out to uncover that which lies beneath...

Is Delta Green worth running if you know very little about Cthulhu mythos? I like the idea of the setting and would like to run it x-files styled monster of the week investigations with the occasional multi-session long hunts but I'm not sure how easy it'll be to decouple it from Cthulhu. DG could just as easily be about a gritty Men in Black fighting aliens ala x-com. Or fighting evil wizards and witches or whatever the fuck else you can try and think about.
Its a solid system about operating in a modern day setting with a veneer of authority. You can easily lift the engine and slap on any other aesthetic setting that pleases you.

trivial, tons of existing official and fan scenarios already either don't use mythos stuff or use it in such a way that it doesnt really matter for the player-facing side of things.

>>98643412
Yeah. I feel like you could easily run like, A Victim of the Art, without referencing anything else Cthulhu.

What are some less, uh, "we're fucked" investigative horror games?

I mean: in COC and the like you're either in a really sketchy position or it's a powerfest with no much horror. Kinda of a middle ground?

I'm redoing the Fall of Delta Green Character Sheet, because what the fuck were they thinking.
Would some anon be able to tell me which fonts do they use for the sheet? Specifically the the abilities but the rest we'd nice too.
If that's one I can find for free I'm willing to deliver my master piece translated from the original frog.

you can actually just extract fonts from pdfs, there are a bunch of browser based options if you just search for it. wont be the full font but it will give you the exact name of each one

Look Outside is very underated. Truly one of the modern greats of comsic horror alongisde bloodborne. While Bloodborne was traditional victorian era, Look Outside is some of the best modern day cosmic horror I've seen. Certianly the best monster design and body horror I've seen, endless amazing designs.
Also could be a fun setting, you and whatever wackos that have knocked on your door (who may have looked outside and are monstrous powerful beings) exploering a building or city with god knows what mutations and monsters hiding there.

Unrelated to the conversation, but The Shadow Over Innsmouth was a very, VERY targeted hit piece against a specific regional subculture.

People always mention how Lovecraft mentions the protagonist took Cheez-Its to Innsmouth, but apparently someone actually tracked down like the specific grocery store chain that they would have been bought from.

During the finale, allow the ritual to keep going as long as at least one investigator is doing the chant. That way, some can step away to stop the zombies while others keep it going.
I would also suggest NOT having the ritual be completely ruined if a zombie manages to disrupt the circle once. Maybe go for three strikes instead.
>>
>>98664127

Not sure I'm following (NTA btw).

While TSOI has the (quite interesting) racial angle about the... what was it, Cape Verde NE immigrants? I'd say the "diying town" angle is pretty universal. I might add, even more relevant today than it is now, as rural settlments are fucked over by globalization way more than it was back then.

Fishing villages involved in the whaling trade where you had these entrenched families running everything and the sailors coming back with exotic brides. The deep ones were a mockery of sailors tales of mermaids combined with this, as all the deep ones the people were consorting with were female.
The Shadow Over Innsmouth was written in 1931. The last whaling voyage out of New England was in 1927. So the whaling towns had been in decline. Yet all the horror and oddity that could be drawn from that remained in play. Decay, polluted bloodlines, etc.

I know it's kind of cliche for a villain, but would The Sefirot work as the thematic basis for a secretive organization within the CIA ala Call of Duty's Pantheon?

Thinking for either NBA or Delta Green. Maybe both with different features.
>>
>>98679404
I tried it for the first time at a con recently and it was the game that made me realize I don’t like PbtA systems. I had middling experiences with other ones before, but I figured it was just that particular splat, but realizing all of my times with them were mixed turned me against the system itself.
But it’s still pretty fun for short one-shot and quick games. Try to have at least two stats you’re good in, as it can get especially dull otherwise.

Been running some CoC scenarios for a few friends for over a year now, I'm building up enough courage to prep Nyarlathotep at some point. But for now, most of the starter scenarios work really well.

Try The Haunting to see if you like the game, Lightless Beacon, Dead Light, and most stories withing the Doors to Darkness book are worth checking out to get a feeling for the game. Personal favorite so far was Blackwater Creek which is part of the keeper screen pack

Has anyone run the Laundry Files 2e yet? I've gotten the pdfs and I'm gearing up to give it a shot, but while the rules look like the publisher has tried to pare off one of their other systems, I'm a little concerned about the lore fidelity too - a quick skim kept showing me stuff that differed pretty widely from the books. I'm still going to run it in its native form before I start tearing parts out and putting bits of 1e in their place, or see if I can just pare off the system entirely as long as it's nice and smooth, but I'd like some information from others who have played it before I start running it myself - or playing doctor frankenstein. Frankly, it strikes me as being something like warhammer fantasy 4e, where they might have huge chunks of rules superseded by later releases. Have you noticed any real problems with the rules if you've run it? The lore stuff annoys me but it's probably not that much of an issue to just ignore or refluff from the originals.
>>
>>98628521
There is a gurps 3rd edition book called Cthulhupunk.
>>
>>98643109
As others have said, yes. If you want something decoupled from the government agents of it, there is also Cthulhu Eternal, which has several era-specific versions on dtrpg.

If you're not going to use magic/monsters, I'd just pirate the handlers guide, some of it might be useful for reference but the majority of the book will be useless to you, all the rules are actually in the agents handbook
>>
>>98644072
Pulp Cthulhu (I'd argue it's trivially easy to run vanilla Cthulhu this way as well).
Nights Black Agents (anything can be stopped if you blow all your preparedness to have a duffle bag full of semtex).
Esoterrorists possibly.
You could run SWADE horror this way, but it's gonna be far further on the pulp side.

I haven't played it but I have read it quite a bit and do want to run it.

It does some weird things to the KiY Mythos, but it seems to take the "Sentient Virus" idea from Delta Green, which is always nice.

One major change I would deem controversial is that there's a character or several who insist that the Prince of Pale Leaves is The TRUE King in Yellow and that Castaigne and other KiY incidents were because of a false manifestation, and the campaign can be pretty insistent on that, but I think it works out that it could be argued that's all a manipulation of The King.

I don't mean literally they're the divine Sefirot, but like they have a structure and codenames based on the Sefirot. You have a leader known as Malkuth and is served by Yesod, who works with Hod and Netzah, etc.

They'd probably handle artifacts, but they wouldn't literally be the Sefirot.

Don't see how AM would fit in. Having real world with magic is, if anything, a dime a dozen in RPGs.

Has anyone ever run Schrodinger's Dilemma? http://fairfieldproject.wikidot.com/schrodinger-s-dilemma
I'm thinking about creating an ending where if the agent that got the message fails to kill Whitcher they end up becoming some kind of being that transcends time but is nonetheless a prisoner in its own mind whose only hope is sending a message to their past self, thus creating some kind of time loop situation.
Still not sure how I'd factor the bill and the tattoo into it.
I'm curious what others have done with such an open-ended scenario.

>>98705655
I've been thinking about putting a conspiracy based on Ready or Not's Mariposa Lily Organization in Delta Green, which is based on MK-Ultra and similar ideas about government sleeper cells. They'd have no idea about the Mythos but would be a similar threat.

Potentially an attempt by Majestic to conflate Delta Green with domestic terrorism by utilizing the cell based structure.
>>
>>98696602
Right, not that anyone has responded but I'm going to talk to myself now I've been part of one (1) session. It's a lot more streamlined than 1e, that's for sure (1e is jacked onto the back of CoC, sort of like how the fore brain is a jumped up mutant riding around on the hind brain). But for all that it likes to talk about out of 'adventure' activities it doesn't have much room for it. It might be the lack of content so far, but aside from endeavours (which seem to give you a suggestion for a short roleplaying vignette per player in downtime) it seems limited to suggestions that you spend time making players fill in receipts and overtime request forms, with other forms like requisitions for gear happening during game.

I've found actual copy-pastes from 1e, but it looks like they've tried to keep some aspects of it, like training courses and managerial wank, without actually keeping the rules for it beyond the very basics or any ideas on how it might be accomplished. Lots of the early issues seem to play out but it's something i'd have to run more to be sure of (Mental magic was completely non-viable before two books were released, for example, and computational demonology seems to cause k-syndrome even though it's supposed to protect against it).

The PHANG stuff is still stupid. Very 'traditional' vampire over 'laundry files' vampire (If you're reading this this far and don't know the laundry files, their vampires drink blood from a victim to appease the parasites in their brain that cause vampirism, creating a magic link which gives the victim turbo dementia and ensures they don't need to drink blood as long as the victim survives. Some get creative with it).

tl;dr Interesting, but wait for a few more books and steal from 1e. Keep the banality up to gloss over the horror since ISO9001 quality assurance is the true evil.
>>
>>98710537
>Potentially an attempt by Majestic to conflate Delta Green with domestic terrorism by utilizing the cell based structure.

You know, actually using something like the real MJ thing is not a bad idea for DG Majestic.

(IIRC the OSI or whatever didn't want the russkies to get an idea about some air bases - in which they actually DID test some low key stuff. Coincendiatlly, ufologists were doing the usual ufology shit, watching the base - not really worrying anyone per se, but this meant the base was on the radio, both figuratevely and not. Of course denying anything would only raise the interest of both groups, so they did feed the weirdos bullshit documents on the idea that no russian agent wouldn't believe it and they would lose interest altogether. Seems like it worked, arguably at the cost of public trust in the long run)

Im considering making a Pulp Cthulhu campaign set in Racoon City 1998.
Give me interesting locations for my players to visit that aren't in the main games.
>>
>>98715416
The zoo and the university from outbreak could be cool, maybe the hotel too.
>>
>>98715579
Racoon City Zoo gives me a great source of monsters, players can be visitors. Staff or security.
Probably set it on September 25th a day after the initial "riot" and maybe have the players on an evacuation bus that crashes near the zoo
>>
>>98715674
So far as basic structure i have:
>players are evacuating via bus which crashes outside the zoo
>players run inside and barricade the main gate
>a few much smaller words drive them towards the hyena habitat, which they are able to drive off
>at this point they find a map leading to the zoo keeper main office for guns and supplies
>stock up on bigger guns but little ammo aside from tranqs.
>learn the veterinary hospital has a radio and helipad.
>fight across the zoo culminating in a G-Virus elephant
>nearly escape via helicopter but taken down by goose strike (doesnt even need to he infected)
>crash into the Killer Whale enclosure
>CRASH INTO THE KILLER WHALE ENCLOSURE
>blow up Shamoo with the helicopter fuel
>find a biolab underneath the marine area
>final boss is a Tyrant Gorilla or Lion
>escape via shuttle and or executed by umbrella security
