Were the campaign and books as bad as the Prime show?
>S4, EP12
The worst episode of any fantasy show.
>Vecna wants to eliminate death
>Vox Machina: "NOOOO AKSHAULLY DEATH IS LE GOOD!"
>women crying every 2 seconds
>Vecna's apotheosis being the slowest event in history
>moralfagging every 2 seconds
>Pike being a backstabber every 2 seconds (never trust women)
>Vecna actually is a man of honor and brings back Grog just to be betrayed by him too
Imagine a fantasy / scifi show where deities are not assholes or atheist-revolutionaries triumph and we have a wholesome ending.
Or there are no gods at all, so we have no retarded moral systems nor retarded afterlife bureaucracy.
Why are fantasy / scifi writers so against to change, evolution, human triumph?
All shows, games, films, books... feel the same
>NOOOO pathetic human peasant you can't want something more, better despite elves or elf-like species lost their chance by going down into stagnation, narcissism and degeneration
>>
>>98556868
The campaign was (much) better and was carried by Sam and Travis.
>>
>>98556872
Perhaps it's too much to ask, but how different?
Do you remember moments that show good it was?

>>
>All shows, games, films, books... feel the same
Which other shows, games, films and books feel the same as Vox Machina, and in what ways?
>>
>>98556868
It’s an adaptation of Critical Role, what did you expect?
>>
>>98556868
what are you comparing them to?
>>
>>98556897
Sam understood the rules better than he let on and had amazing improv that was mostly played for comedy but he had sense enough to know when to flip the script.
Travis played his character to the hilt and always wanted to push to the extreme end of something even if it ended up mechanically bad for his character/party.

Therefore, a lot of the most dramatic and interesting things within the game happened thanks to those two.
>>
>>98557120
Why did they not keep them for the show?
What was the point of turning Pike into a Celestial-descendant? In the og campaign she was just a normal gnome paladin.
Was her #StrongWoman moment or what?
>>
>>98556911
Something good.
>>
>>98560142
First mistake.
>>
>>98560154
What was the second?
Also, how did you know it was bad back then?
>>
>>98560258
It’s an animated adaptation of a podcast of other people playing ttrpgs. It was a bad idea to even consider in the first place.
>>
>>98560592
But that is more a problem for the screenwriters and the people that control their quality, not because it's from a TTRPG series perse. If the story is cool and you have a team with talent, you can create a masterpiece.
>>
>>98556868
The show misses a lot of details and fun moments.
Also it ignores the drama behind the players, e.g that one bitch who ruined one guys life based on false allegations
>>
>>98561092
It’s specifically the “podcast of other people playing ttrpgs” aspect, not any of the individual elements. Podcasts are fine, they’re like long form radio. Watching other people play ttrpgs is weirdly passive, but adapting stories from real plays is fine. And Critical Role are entertainers, so I’d get wanting to listen to their out to character banter. But it’s why doing an animated adaptation is is bad idea. Ttrpg fans miss out on the gameplay. Thr podcast fans miss out on the banter and longer format. And Critical Roll fans miss out on the OOC discussions and insights behind their characters, as well as the actors themselves. It’s overall a shadow of all of those things by default.

Etc. ALL of them have tech stagnation or even regression, despite having species with ultra-high-IQ and millennia old knowledge (elves, elf-like, dragons, "spirits", etc) and they still use unironically the term of "magic" despite they have knowledge (aka, "science", "sapienta") of that "magic".
The theological and moral systems are retarded af.
And again, the """bad guys""" (usually humans) are the ones that want to change the lame and retarded status quo and start a new Golden Age. While the """good guys""" are the ones that want to preserve the current awfully lame status quo (usually elves).

>>
>>98568257
Trvke. I still don't get why Raishan did reveled her plot, instead just disappearing fast and in silence.
Also, what was the point of moving to another if Raishan became an undead, why not use her already dying body?
Why did the (bureaucrat) gods of death not intervene?
Why was bad that Raishan gets a new body? Would she starts a new war or just chill for all eternity?
If she became an undead / immortal dragon, why did she not join Vecna and his 500-year masterplan?

Why the Critical Role hate?
>>

Because it ruined the hobby by bringing in hordes of nornalfags, ending the Forgeite era and diluting that generation. Sure, The Forge was gay and pretentious and let to faggots like Adam Koebel being dominant figures in game design when he never even actually designed a game, and sure Vincent Baker was the progenitor of the PbtA slop craze, but there were tons of different games out, D&D 5e was new and fairly balanced and fresh, so people were interested in D&D again. Then Shitical Roll came about and dumped hordes of homosexuals and fat dykes into the playerbase and that encouraged the fags trying to pozz up D&D to pozz it up even more, everything became about 5e, everyone wanted to score Le epic nat20 greentext to share on social media, encouraging YouTube channels like Neckbeardia and Crunchy Tavern to come about, plus loads of others I don't even remember. The scamdemic made it worse, turning the hobby into a roll20-centric pissing contest for a few years, but the groundwork was already laid by then. Critical Roll fans came to expect this epic story from a professional-tier DM, and became the most spoiled brats imaginable. Everything about old TTRPG culture is dead now and it's thanks to Critical Roll. By 2019 their victory was assured and the scamdemic ended the old paradigm completely. Now everyone plays D&D and they all suck at it, every other book is about purple and green tieflings and orcs having a gay romance while running a tavern together, D&D is so gay soft and quirky that it truly is despicable, and Critical Roll being led by a man who paints his finger nails and whose uncle died of AIDS is a huge part of that.

Waterdeep Dragon Heist has you literally owning a tavern.
Journey to the Radiant Citadel is about a gay ass night market crawl.
Strixhaven book has rules for your gay interracial college romance (and you're expected to do it).
>>
>>98571705
>Waterdeep Dragon Heist has you literally owning a tavern.
and is the adventure module about being a homosexual tavern owner, or is it about dealing with Xanathar/ the drow/ Manshoon and a heist?
>Journey to the Radiant Citadel is about a gay ass night market crawl.
And on this night market, you do what exactly? Have gay sex? Is the premise of the adventure to get your cheeks filled, or is there something supernatural problem going on?
>rules for your gay interracial college romance (and you're expected to do it)

Excuse my ignorance, but I don't know any of this terms. I know DnD for the Jeremy Irons' Kino (I know all the hate to that film, but for me it was epic).
Can those changes in the editions ruin the game that much?
Also, how has CR so much power?
I can skip the fetishes they adds in their shows, but the shows themselves have no logic at all.
>>
>>98571781
Just because it doesn't have explicit gay sex scenes doesn't mean it isn't gay. If you had an actual registered testosterone level you would understand this and wouldn't be asking these questions.
>>
>>98572456
That movie had a lot of good parts. It's also pre2010 so before The Forge. I remember the 00s and yes they were ruined by 4th edition but thats a different beast. In the end Critical Roll is far far worse.

I'm more of a storyfag than most anons in this board so I'm more forgiving of CR's campaign style. I think the main issue with it bringing all these normies into the game is that they have a specific expectation of how a D&D campaign is supposed to go, being a tailor made plot with "character development" and arcs and a whole hero's journey structured for their OC. 5e is possibly one of the worst games for that experience.

The math of the game (around the time CR started) revolved around a character who is good at 2-3 things. It required you to have a very specific character build if you want to be good at most things, and even then you're trading off effectiveness in some aspects. This doesn't play well with the power fantasy of a semi-omnipotent borderline Mary Sue like Beauregard, so either you end up with a weird reflavored multiclass abomination to accommodate the fantasy or your GM has to pull a DoorMatt Mercer and neuter every single challenge in the game. The absolute state of D&D now is you've got classes front loaded to shit so you're already cool by Level 5, enemy math makes them all pathetic, and your DM is expected to structure a whole hero's journey curated theme park ride for your party without any tools that can accommodate that experience. Actual storygames have mechanics for escalating tension, challenging character beliefs, consequences for breaking/sticking to principles, and engaging with the world. 5e pretends it can be a storygame but it's just a mid combat RPG

4e shifted the paradigm and identity of the game. It killed d20 system, for better or for worse, it reached for a new fan base, change the structure of the game just like 3rd did.

Critical Roll however utterly raped the fanbase by bringing in outsiders. Before then, new players were mostly "groomed" by existing gamers, ensuring this sort of mentoring that preserved the culture. Critical Roll bypassed that and turned that social bond into something parasocial and destroying the culture, which WotC encourages because they hate the old guard who are harder to please. Better to bring in hordes of normalfags who will eat up whatever slop they put out. Which is what happened.
>>
>>98561919
That didn't happen until the third campaign, and it didn't affect anything.
The blonde was married to a jerk, and they had a nasty divorce. The guy hosted a spin-off interview show and wasn't a player.
The drama stems from the woman lying about being abused; the guy sued her for defamation and won.

>>98571626
I think you're an insane person but I do also think that Actual Plays have fundamentally altered the hobby in a way that has damaged it and which it will never recover from.

The audience is now far larger than it should be, so suits expect big returns on investment that literally can't be delivered.
They demand the 5e audience because of shit like CR. Sloppification ensues.
The Actual Play guys are now your playtesters for a lot of things, most relevant to me personally is Vampire the Masquerade. So the games become more and more tailored to them.
Games are now designed around Actual Play groups, since it benefits the devs from 'exposure and hype' and benefits AP from exclusive access.

And nothing can ever break this. The barrier of entry to TTRPGs is simply too low, anyone can upload a pdf to DriveThru. You will never have a Pathfinder come to shake it up, never have a VtM shake things up and be the 'second shelf' game. 5e is 70% of all TTRPGs, total, and the next 3 most popular beneath them are D&PF or something ridiculous. And that trend will continue because the suits want the 5e audience because of market dominance because of Actual Plays because...

None of our old books are going anywhere, but I genuinely believe that Actual Plays have created a condition where for this to end or change, we'd lose mass produced TTRPG as a medium in the process.
>>
>>98588818
Dude, if those universes got adapted to the big/little screen by directors and screenwriters known for doing those (universally bad, disliked) cliches, welp, then those tropes are correct.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TV_Tropes
Fandom website that autistically catalogues patterns in media and calls them “tropes”. And not in the sense of a historically recurring narrative element like a specially chosen hero of humble origin or a wizened wise hermit, shit like “people in anime have weird hair colors” or “friendship speeches”.

They’re the kind of fandom nerds who would point to something having a weird mystic element, notice it fits a pattern they’ve invented, and go “must be the Weird Space Rick Magic trope ahurr” just to get it cataloged rather than examine if they’re really that similar or if the actual usage and-presentation is different. That’s why I’m a bit overly critical when it comes to people who talk about tropes and bad cliches on the internet, a lot of fandom geeks obsess with patterns and call them bad or cliche without considering if it’s the stories being structured a certain way that causes them to see these patterns, or it’s just them actively trying to fit everything into autistic check boxes that’s doing it.

Parasocialism. Normies are drawn to the idea of ttrpgs as more of a beer and pretzels affair where it’s more about sitting down with your buddies and playing a more involved board game, and the friendly atmosphere of Critical Role feeds into that.

And I’m not kicking beer and pretzel games. Far from it. They’re excellent if you’re dead tired and want some fun to go along with a get together with friends. But games like D&D are way too intricate and involved for the kind of normies who view the ttrpg scene exclusively through Criticak Role lens to enjoy. They want ttrpgs to be a spectator sport, not be the guys running on the field kicking the ball around and sweating their balls off.

Pike was barely in the campaign because Ashley was working on TV at the time and they wanted to give her a more prominent role.
>>
>>98604282
pike was present quite a bit, it was just ashley who was absent. you may recall all the times they talked about “jeagering pike” etc.
and they certainly could have given her a more prominent role in the cartoon without fundamentally changing who the character is and fundamentally changing her relationship to her god, which just smacks of the weird, faintly political in some way, definitely bitter and personally motivated, treatment of the gods in the bells hells campaign they were playing at the time they were writing and producing the last couple seasons of the cartoon.

Were WoT books good or not?

The books are a post-sci-fi-magic apocalypse Earth that has had women in charge for 3000 years, and they fucked it up so badly that the universe finally has to reincarnate Gigachad (Tyr/King Arthur/Jesus) and his two also-Gigachad buddies (Odin and Thor) and make them all twist destiny itself to their will, just so Gigachad Super-Male can fix what went wrong and save the world/universe from the embodiment of Evil. While Gigachad is going steadily more and more insane because said embodiment of Evil in the LAST war against him tainted half of magic itself so all men inevitably go mad if they use it.

There is also a lot of braid tugging, folding arms under bosoms (which are almost universally large, save for a few flatties who bemoan their lack of chest breadth in their PoV chapters), women complaining men don't understand anything while not understanding anything, sniffing, a harem, and even the bitchiest of tsunderes (which many woman in the series are) being turned nice by an application of penis.

It's also a good story, definitely worth reading. They're extremely different to the Amazon slop.

He's being sardonic because he apparently likes the series and is able to take its idiosyncracies with a sense of humor. Which is how adults interact with media: by understanding that it's not your whole identity, it's just a fun story.

>Why men allow it?
Because women were helping rebuild the world in the years after the Breaking (see below). It is pointed out a few times, however, that the hold on power women have had is decaying, and has been doing so for a long time. Several strong nations ban their presence entirely, and the more the series progresses, the more you realise that they aren't mystical all-knowing and wise Aes Sedai working to help (or control) the world, but are a bunch of half-trained morons who have no idea what they're doing (and are dying out because they don't have children and cut men who can channel off from the One Power so they suicide out of depression, which over time has been culling the ability to channel magic at all from the gene pool), who are so detached from world affairs that they've sequestered themselves into irrelevance, and who would prefer to let nations die than admit they can fuck up.

And, thus, the men are actually more and more starting to not allow it.

Jordan was making a very careful point, which is that the female magic users had in fact spent most of the series contemplating their navels or locked up in their giant tower (on an island that looks like a vagina too) while the plot moved on without them. By the time the climactic battle at the end arrives, one of the generals in charge admits he honestly has no idea or use for the women who want to use their magic to fight in it, and planned his strategy under the assumption that they would do what they had always done: be completely fucking useless.

>Why?
The male half of the One Power (which has male halves and female halves, magic is gendered and you are born male or female, with the ability to use the half that your soul is gender of) was tainted by the Dark One when at the close of a vast war, a hundred men went on a mission and sealed him (the women refused to go). His counterstroke tainted the male half, and they all went mad and broke the world.

>>98613856
They both get all the elements, anon, it's just a statistical demographic thing that the female channelers are generally more likely to be stronger with air and water, but there are women who are shown to be stronger with fire or earth. There are men shown to be strong with water or air (or spirit in one case).
It's only very rarely even talked about in the books, and usually only as like casual commentary. Every channeler in the books is shown weaving with all the elements.

Conflating knowledge / education with wisdom is the first and most fundamental mistake people make about both things. Moiraine has the benefit of literally more than a century of education in the world's (possibly only) center of learning and lore. She's older than anyone of that party of characters by at least fifty years but possibly as long as a century or even longer when the story begins. She seems wise because she's seen a lot and done a lot and isn't a terrified ignoramus: she's literally there because she's spent her entire life preparing for that moment... and has had a few false starts before. She's probably wiser and smarter than most of the twats bickering and knitting in the Tower. But that's not a high bar.

You have to remember that people who can channel are basically just randomly determined. The most obnoxious backwater hick bitch might end up being found as a girl and when the Aes Sedai take her to the Tower, she's gonna learn to channel and be an Aes Sedai.

And the Tower has been infected by Dark Friends / Black Ajah since basically forever, so when shit goes down, they've been prepared to cause it and capitalize upon the chaos for a long, long time. It shouldn't be a surprise that they are killing each other and making foolish decisions with limited correct information. That's the entire plot of that book is that they've been ganked by plots centuries in the making.

What the women do to themselves. And it bites them in the ass repeatedly, but they just don't learn. Moiraine needed magic otherdimensional cheat codes plus looking at the future herself to figure out what the fuck she was doing after her normal playbook only made the Dragon unwilling to listen to her the more she did it.

Moirane is 42 at the series' start, by the way. Rand, Mat and Perrin are 19. She is nowhere near a century older, or even half that.

OP here, for what I have read, most fantasy / scifi writers are pretentious low-IQ writers that can NOT think beyond current IRL human society. Just check out the morals, ideologies and religions of today, they are the same in those distant worlds. If writers fail in portraying and different reality there, of course they will fail in portraying a different material reality.
Yesterday I finished the show 'Trese' in Netflix, which is based in Filipino mythology, it was pure slop, even worse than Vox Machina. All my OP greentext but 10 times more stupid:
1. Basically the whole plot is around some India-level shitty streets in the shithole of Manila, where a literal god of war is defeated by Trese when she was a kid.
2. The god of war just wants to destroy the world because "muh destiny, muh greater good" while talking about free will and liberty.
3. People have no problem living around "aswangs" who literally eat humans, because "balance", "multiculturalism" and some other hippie (retarded) bs.
4. And despite people knowing about all this creatures and the dangers, there is 0 adaptation to them, you see cops and soldiers with no training nor weapons nor armors to protect people from them, there is an episode where you see cops fighting zombies and they don't wear any protection, not even riot gear to avoid being eaten. And the whole episode is about "muh police brutality".
5. And as you said before, there is a whole drama about death and all that, despite it's confirmed afterlife exists.
6. Also, forget about gods of "good and order" intervening because for some retarded reason, "balance" this days means allowing evil to exist and so it can destroys life and torture innocents for all eternity.
7. And yes, the afterlife is another bureaucratic nightmare.

The whole show feels like the writers don't know shit about human evolution and how we adapt to the different environments we populate. Literally there is no character with more than two digits of IQ.

Wait, so are you telling me that women refuse to fight against evil, and that's why they preserve their power. Are we sure that the "Dark One" is the ultimate evil and not the women? Why they refused?

What is the origin of the "Dark One"? Is it a male or a female?
What would have happened if it had won?

>Why they refused?
They thought the plan was recklessly suicidal and dumb. It was, but the Forces of Light were also losing, it was a Hail Mary throw of the dice because they were going to be fucked either way if they didn't try something. The women believed that they had a better plan. Although on paper the female plan was an even more dogshit Hail Mary than the male one, not least by virtue of being impossible at the time.
>>
>>98615409
So this confirmed that women are worse and eviler than the Dark One. Thanks.
And as always, foyim feel 0 consequences for ruining the world, just like any world, real or fictional. It's all so tiredsome and repetitive.
>>
>>98615276
They refused to go on the last, suicidal, mission and as a result when the Dark One corrupted the male source of magic to make every male mage forever go insane and start randomly slaughtering people they were extremely well positioned to rise to power in the post-apocalypse. Pre Apocalypse WoT was a modern/futuristic society and had magic. Men couldn't compete because they would just go insane after a couple years and mages in WoT are mad OP so you desperately want mages who aren't insane to deal with them.

The Dark One is a sapient representation of the concept of evil/bad itself. It's definitionally evil and can't be killed without fucking up the universe as we know it. Because a universe without the Dark One is a universe where nothing bad can ever happen.
>>
>>98615323
that’s a bit of an exaggeration but they have gotten so carried away with the idea of making everything morally gray to the point that they make you not even want to root for the protagonists anymore.
they were making this season at the same time they as campaign 3, and they were doing the same thing there. they thought they were making their characters “complex” but they actually just made them evil and made the audience hate them.

>>
>>98617248
>Virgin complex character
add to the list the fact that everyone just forgets the wild out of character swings. once things get back to normal, it’s like it never happened.
>Chad unidimensional character
and these characters can actually have a lot of depth. you can easily imagine a justice league christmas episode or comic book issue where everyone is inviting batman to the team christmas party or whatever and he refuses to go because “crime doesn’t take holidays off” or whatever, but then at the end alfred brings him a small present down in the batcave and he pulls out something he got for alfred as well and they have a nice family moment together.
a character doesn’t have to radically oscillate between good and evil or anything like that in order to have depth. even a character that hasn’t fundamentally changed in 100 years can still have real depth and humanity if he’s just written well.
it’s a bad writer who has to do what this show did to pike in order to “give her some kind of character arc” or whatever.

Maybe if you at least read a wiki article or the one book the dark one actually shows up in you wouldn't need spoonfeeding from someone who read the books a decade ago and might have phrased it poorly in a way that triggers you.

It is possible to define objective evil if you really want to. It just usually puts people in a grey/evil existence since - like wheel of time - you end up having to define a shitton of completely reasonable or rational actions as evil. Completely useless for moral guidance on how to live your life but fine for cosmological world building where the existence of evil is a necessity.
>>
>>98621684
Dude, I against turning everything human into a cosmological force, that is NOT the same as wanting every single show morally grey. You can have a clear line between good and evil without turning them into "beings" with consciousness and / or personality.
>>
>>98621814
>cosmological world building where the existence of evil is a necessity.
nta but I disagree. actual greek, norse, etc mythology didn’t exactly have fundamentally evil gods. some were nicer or crueler to mortals, and there were trickster gods and gods of death and such, but nothing like sauron or wherever the wheel of time one is called (haven’t read it). I don’t think a fantasy setting needs an “objectively evil” god, or a god-like cosmic entity that represents the universal concept of evil, or anything like that. it’s not a necessity.
>>
>>98623177
Finally, someone that got my point. Sometimes I wonder why people can't move beyond the current cliches despite this same people can't stop complaining about how boring and homogenous feel all the current scifi / fantasy universes.

Also, about the greeks, you could argue that Achlys and Kakia are the ultimate evils. It would not be a surprise if one could find about an ancient greek comparing both deities with Yahweh and Satan, respectively ('interpretatio graeca').
>>
>>98623177
>actual greek, norse, etc mythology didn’t exactly have fundamentally evil gods
Other religions did tho. Like Ahriman, Apophis, Tau, and Lamashtu. People gave names and identities to concepts and domains that were always hostile to humans no matter what, or at least existed in diametric opposition to the “good” deities. Though even then, it’s not like they won’t ever be worshipped. Pazuzu was a god responsible for unleashing death and disease, but ancient Sumerians still invoked his name to protect him from Lamashtu delivering the same upon their unborn children.

> I don’t think a fantasy setting needs an “objectively evil” god, or a god-like cosmic entity that represents the universal concept of evil, or anything like that. it’s not a necessity.
That’s a fair statement, cause fantasy is definitely not constrained by our own cultural limitations, so people are free to imagine any flavor of good they like. But it’s not always a bad thing if they do have an “evil” god either. It’s just a matter of how they’re used. And its easy to justify someone claiming a god is objectively evil when that’s not the case at all, it’s called demonization and happened a fair bit irl.
>>
>>98625710
>cause fantasy is definitely not constrained by our own cultural limitations, so people are free to imagine any flavor of good they like.
Sadly, most people are low-IQ, so they want the same slop with some little differences while complaining that all feel the same and it's sterile.

>“evil” god either.
Always find funny in an ironic way, how gods are portrayed as beings not constrained by mortal reality and therefore superior to them, while at the same time are constrained by mortal reality (aka, morals).
Imagine being a god, do something "evil" millennia ago and stay being the god OF evil or personification of it by the descendants of your victims, despite you are now interested in other things, ex: divine ping-pong competition.
>>
>>98625808
>despite you are now interested in other things, ex: divine ping-pong competition

>>
>>98625808
interesting take on this is when the other gods don’t see him as evil, only the mortals do, because their perception is too narrow, and the good gods come to the defense of the evil one.

Taliessin from 10 years ago is actually coherent, quick-witted, can improvise off-the-cuff and has some fairly deep and interesting speeches, he even makes Percy kinda an interesting character that makes me want to watch more. He DOESN'T start every sentence with an exaggerated sigh, then rambles on slowly and incoherently for minutes at a time, mumbling some absolute nonsense like he does with everything else he did.

The problem is that fantasy is drawing on Christian mythology in terms of the afterlife, but in Christian mythology, the afterlife is literally definitely better than the material world, which sucks because of human sin that Adam and Eve ate the apple, and also one day the material world is supposed to stop existing and be replaced with the cool afterlife. speaking of cr, I just want to say I’m flabbergasted by how bad brennan has been at justifying the revolution narrative in c4. granted I’m not caught up yet (about 5 eps behind right now) but dol makjar seems borderline utopian. aside from the sundered houses and their magical rituals or whatever, which is classic dnd stuff, ordinary life in the city seems pretty great. I don’t recall brennan describing rioting, gang wars, women afraid to walk the streets at night, the homeless piling up everywhere, or anything else that would justify all the dozens of times a character had said “things are getting bad in the city, we can all feel it” or a variation of that. I genuinely cannot understand who would want to revolt against such an idyllic life.
the last episode I watched was right before opening night of the play, and I just haven’t seen anything that makes me think dol makjar is a place that is primed for a revolution. quite the opposite, in fact. despite the constant barrage of revolutionary language from pcs and npcs, it seems like a truly great place to live.
I understand it’s probably against brennan’s values to depict a poor person committing a crime or whatever, but how can he tell a story about happy, safe, well-fed people participating in a violent revolution?
again, I mean aside from whatever bbeg stuff the halovar and tachonis families are up to, which is more of a problem for an adventuring party to solve.
I’m hearing a lot of people say “this city is on a knife’s edge” but I haven’t actually seen anything that makes me believe the city is on a knife’s edge.

>the old sorcerer nobility you fought against in the last war is about to enact ever stricter control and influence to the currently open for all wizard academy
>yet another old sorcerer nobility house is about to take over the grand revolution museum, getting control about your entire cultural heritage
>now one of the old sorcerer nobility calls for a vote of no confidence against the current revolutionary government, essentially aiming at disbanding and/ or taking over power entirely
So, uhhh.... how many more examples for "holy shit, the people we fought the last war against are slowly taking over control in every single part of life"?

I know media literacy is a meme, but holy shit, this isnt exactly deep stuff hard to grasp. The political enemy is walking through all the institutions, taking away your rights step by step and the masses are noticing, but not enough to make a solid stance against it, thus the need for players. You can easily make parallels to just about any single nation that is making a slide towards authoritarian/ autocratic rule, ever.

checked and checked, but you’re both wrong.
>Tachonis raid on Plaza Davinos
was covered up. how could the city be on a knife’s edge over something it doesn’t know about?
>Einfasen taking over the police.
They fired about 1/3 and immediately they got offered jobs by a mercenary company owned by the Halovars iirc. there are no fewer cops than before. brennan never once told azune on one of his work days that he noticed crime getting worse in the poor neighborhoods because of the Einfasen takeover
>Cornoroy taking over the Penteveral
the new dean said she didn’t want to kick out the poor students, suspend financial aid, etc and in fact said she wanted more students, both rich and poor, because she had a 5 year plan to triple the size of the school (or something like that)
>Vote of no confidence in the Revolutionary Council
this was said by lady Halovar after the assassination attempt, at the end of the schemers arc. the city was allegedly “on a knife’s edge” for week before that, so that can’t be what caused the city to be on a knife’s edge.
>Stricter anti-arcane laws
this is the best argument for the sundered houses doing something that actually harms the common people enough to cause a revolution, except arcane magic is actually quite rare and restricting it would only harm a few people like Demodus Blix and the Hand and Wheel sigil crafters. but very few people in the city earn their living using arcane magic because it’s still very new and uncommon in Araman, so frankly very few people would be effected by this.
so, while it is definitely the case that the sundered houses are bad guys and have been making political moves, that is not the same thing as the idea that there is literally political revolution in the air or that the common people are “on a knife’s edge” ready to risk their lives and their families lives to fight a revolution against a group of rich families who aren’t even the actual government.
>>
>>98672719
>Tachonis raid on Plaza Davinos
Because its still a case of "Hey, my relatives and friends who worked there are gone and wont return home, ever."
>Einfasen taking over the police.
You dont need to see a rise of crime to conclude "noble house A turns the police into their private security force, noble house B recruits the fired officers into their private merc army" is a bad thing
>Cornoroy taking over the Penteveral
They take over the Archanade museum and immediatly plan to reduce the Lloy wing (a famous historical wing of orcish heroes)

>common people are “on a knife’s edge” ready to risk their lives and their families lives to fight a revolution against a group of rich families who aren’t even the actual government.
well the average commoner isnt at this stage yet. The revolution force right now consists of the dedicated few. But the commoners may certainly know that powers in the city are shifting.
>>
>>98672803
>The revolution force right now consists of the dedicated few.
it took azune’s friend 24 hours to recruit 350 men at arms willing to fight and die in a revolution just because they got laid off from their jobs as cops and immediately offered new ones as mercenaries.
also, I just think it would have been cool to actually SEE a city on a knife’s edge and actually have riots, poverty, gang warfare, etc happening instead of just seeing common folk going about their day and constantly being told but not really shown that the city is “on a knife’s edge”

The primary duty of any given ruling authority is to make society more free by forcing order onto the chaotic, tyrannical parts of humanity.
When a ruling authority punishes revolutionaries, it's not because that authority is being mean for no reason. It's because revolutionaries make everybody else less free by destabilizing everything, like the Shapers' war messing with the laws of reality.
>>
>>98689947
It very much is. The brewing revolution is being led by the owner of the cities most famous theater, a professor of the wizard university, a ranking officer of the guards special magic department and the curator of the cities most important museum.

None of these people are poor, struggling or downtrodden.

Think of it in the context of decriminalized drug use.
If the state doesn't punish you for injecting fentanyl that doesn't mean you're more free. All it means that you are now subject to the tyranny of addiction and crime that comes as a direct consequence of rampant drug use in society.
If you're a habitual drug addict or criminal then living in that society probably sounds like a good thing.

if you like the cartoon you’d probably like the campaign even more, and there’s hundreds of hours of it.
fans of the campaign don’t find the cartoon to be very faithful to the source material, especially in regards to the gods and pike and things like that, which were more so things that happened in their third campaign, which was much less liked and quite controversial among the fans, and which they are now retconning vox machina’s story to include.
it’s like if they re-made the original star wars trilogy and included a bunch of stuff tied in to the sequel trilogy that everyone hated.
>>
>>98670655

>>
>>98694740
there’s not just two levels to the campaign like you described, though. there’s three. yes it’s important to have characters engage with the plot such as learning where the vestiges are, trying to recruit aid from vasselheim and syngorn, caring about the refugees from emon and westruun after the conclave attack, etc. but that’s not melodrama. that’s just plot. what we absolutely don’t need is a liam type who absolutely must take 30 minutes out of every episode to mope and cry about how much he loves keyleth or vex.
and both travis and sam are perfectly capable of engaging in dramatic moments, like when fjord throws the sword in the lava or grog yells “fix him!” or sam’s 9th level counterspell or the bard’s lament. but they don’t dwell on the melodrama in the same way some of the others do. they treat it like a game that is primarily about having fun, and sometimes it’s fun to throw in some real drama. but liam in particular doesn’t seem to care about the game so much as he just wants to *act* and emote and mope and drag everybody else to a screeching halt to watch him.

true but that’s more telling again instead of showing. I guess I just think brennan is missing opportunities to make daily life in the city actually seem dangerous or desperate.

speaking of campaign 4 I can’t believe anyone in the group would trust vaelus. she worshipped her goddess for a thousand years and then spent a week hiking with some strangers and that’s enough to make her throw away her entire religion, culture, and even her family? how can you trust someone whose loyalty is so flimsy? if she’s willing to forsake the eternal souls of her own sisters just because it “feels right in the moment” then how much more easily would she betray the group she’s with now?

I really dislike that Ashley of all people is the sole defender of the gods and our only way into gaining a more nuanced view of them but just crumbles completely under the slightest pressure and has gotten zero coaching from Brennan on how her character would argue for them, so the gods are just left being evil fucks and there was seemingly no merit to them existing at all morally and good riddance, and her character is just left completely humiliated and her advanced age means nothing because she is just as a child, not a cool ageless elf that could explore the idea of immortality as was the impression at the start of the campaign. It's kind of on Brennan for leaving her without any help there, he might just want her to really be portrayed like that and for there to be no merit to the gods at all.

That's the scene I was thinking of specifically. An easy thing she could have used as a defense is how fucked up the world is now that they're gone with all the natural and supernatural disasters, and then over time begrudgingly have to admit that there are different paths forward. Again though, they could have figured out that this would be the case with a whole cast of players who like to be self righteous and argue for their cause, so leaving her in the wind like this could only have ended one way.

>>
>>98701284
I accidentally put this post here instead of 5e general, assumed cr threads were always slow.
I'm the same way with CR, I let many episodes pile up, then I skip most combat, and if they get stuck yapping about speculating motives and what things mean and whatever as they do a lot in circles then I just kind of zone out or skip portions. I think C4 is great apart from that metaphysical yapping and turning over supernatural magic clues over and over again that the players don't get what it means but play along, then Brennan comes in and just straight up tells them things that they had no hunch about and does that over and over again. It's the parts I dislike the most. But when it's character stuff or being in tense negotiations or dungeoncrawling stuff then it's probably better than it's ever been.
>>98703216
Aren't there plenty of other mediums where you might need to get through bad sections of stuff like a tv show to get to the good parts etc? I find if I don't do that then there isn't a whole lot of good stuff left.
>>
>>98703359
Why bother?
It's not like it could possibly have a payoff besides the resolution of a plot you can't even be bothered to watch unfold at it's own pace.

Which signifies minimal investment anyway.
It's not like this is coursework, or research that you are obligated to finish.

>Duuuude, you HAVE to slog through two seasons of ABSOLUTE DOGSHIT that even I do not care about, to get to this one REALLY COOL DEVELOPMENT in mid season 3

But, to what end?
Basedpogging at the finish line?

I have never been one of those people.
Probably because I've always been far too good at finding something else that occupies my attention without feeling like an imposition.

Like literally, anything else.
>>
>>98703438
It's almost never like that for me. You find something you like, you then want more of it so you find the 2-3 things that some what resemble it if you're lucky, then once that's done you might want something similar but that does certain aspects of it well or differently and that's usually when you hit the "dude it gets so good after x hours" and that's when you start going for those things.

>>98703708

thaisha, a level 5 druid, creates an entirely new species of celestial, on accident, without spending a spell slot or thousands of gold and weeks of work, but just by being present while a play happens.
brennans “world building” is just completely nonsensical genuinely random fantasy stuff mixed with his standard commie propaganda. he’s funny, and I like a lot of the c4 characters better than c3, but I suspect the long term payoff of this campaign is going to be as railroaded and agenda-driven as c3. and maybe much worse.
>>
>>98556868
>>98703924
>Imagine a fantasy / scifi show where deities are not assholes
Don't want to spoil things for you OP, but you will get a lot more gods being good in the next season unless they radically change the plot from the campaign, though the gods are made much more morally ambigious and questioned in C3 so they'll likely inject some of that retroactively into the story, not too much though I hope, vox machina's great strength is that it really does follow the fantasy archetypes and the gods and party of heroes taking on the evil dragons and lich, just classic fantasy.
>>
>>98704238
It really does feel random, like that creature that came out of the lake and all the other stuff that happened, like he has a very clear idea of what he thinks faerie and the afterlife and all this is in his head, and the way he talks about it he assumes that everyone at the table are as engaged about it as he is, but they're clearly just barely hanging on and trying to figure out what he wants to happen, so he leans a ton on stuff like "as you see this, you realize that this and this is true, and if that is true, then that other thing must be true, and you're like 'woah, this makes me think of this'" and he does it so much and then presents chocies to the players that don't feel meaningful, because the players nor the audience don't understand what choice they're making, because they're holding some nonsense artifact in their hand and holding it up to the sky might do something random that he's already decided, or speaking to it dos something else, but it's all just in Brennan's hands I feel. Might be some projection where I'm more lost than the players because I can' bother to engage with that aspect of the story so much, but they genuinely seem confused too.

..But then you get shit like Sam talking to Lord Tachonis or the soldier's table meeting hounds or taking on that fort with the rogue lord and it's just so fun.
>>
>>98704296
agree completely. I have no idea what the metaphysical geography of the afterlife looks like and no idea the significance of whatever happened with the orc ghosts or whatever. all very flimsy, unclear, and handwavy which makes it hard to be invested in any of that.
even the politics of the revolutionary council I could easily follow when he was laying out the structure and history of it and why the chamber of the lords advisory was created and so on. it’s the fantasy lore stuff that he just doesn’t seem to be good at explaining in a way that paints a clear picture in my head of what’s happening and why it matters.

I'm a 34 y/o Chud my nigga.
I'm also an antisocial, aggressive cynic, who can't leave well enough alone.
If I can assemble a squad, anybody can.
Just takes gentle persistence, and a willingness to teach interested people from scratch.
You gotta put your feelers out.
My old upstairs neighbor stopped by to visit me earlier; he moved out six months ago.
Lived here about six or seven years.
I roped him into a Runequest game apropos to nothing, ages back, he'd never done that kinda thing before, and we played some boardgames in our time; and he introduced me to several people I've played tabletop games with, mostly just because I asked if they wanted to try it out.
I made a pretty good friend just because when I noticed he was moving in years back I bought a four pack of lager, had a drink with him and his dad and welcomed him to the neighborhood.

Truth is, there is no such thing as "gaming friends", just friends.
People are not instrumental to hobbies, they are an end unto themselves.

These days most of my gaming activity is just playing Quar: A Clash of Rhyfles with a guy I've known since I was twelve, a guy I met in college, who is now a cop, and a lad about ten years my junior who lives on the other end of the street, whom I alternate between mentoring and having fist-fights with.

Sometimes you can wean people on simpler games, then identify those who are more likely to be receptive to making a vertical or lateral leap.

For instance
There is a Munchkin to Tabletop roleplaying pipeline.

If you're more into wargames but like me, are bored of Warhammer and GW as a brand, then the best thing is actually to just pick a small scale game and set out to start your own micro-scene.

Sometimes I post my games in /awg/, but I spend most of the average week banned by janny because he is a redditor who diddles his bum wish a hairbrush.

I appreciate the reply but we're not the same. Also people don't do that type of stuff here, no one talks to anyone in the apartment complex.

Yeah well, I start fights and am a proactive menace.
There are many wats to be antisocial.

And why not?
Be the first.
Once upon a time people shat in holes in the ground.

You don't have to invite the whole world in.
You test people first.

it was an actually good episode. consequences being thrown in the players faces for their actions left and right.

Are you and the people in this story White? I’m 35 and very chudly. I don’t need details, just curious for a Y/N. It’s ok if you’re not, I accept the NH world I live in

Yes.
The fuck would I hang out with nons for?
Are you saying you are surrounded by nons?
If so, your problem is far more immediate than "not having a gaming group" and you should be moving for your health.
>>
>>98725401
the 40k threads move by at a brisk pace, it's 5e dnd in particular that is fucking dead around here. I wonder what caused this, it's still the most popular ttrpg after all.
>>
>>98730273
Is it though?
It's the most ubiquitous, I'll grant.
But of all the people who bought it, how many are still playing it?
Still thinking about it?
Still interested in D&D as a brand?

I for one, am not.

god damn the schemers fucking SUCK at scheming except azune
>murray can’t speak to any npc without that npc immediately hating her, and lost her job within a week of the new boss taking over
>bolaire immediately got caught stealing the pariah blades
>hal navigated the halovar’s interest in his play so poorly he had the photarch in his home the morning after its premier
>tyranny killed the tailors and immediately got caught
>wic won back his grandma’s trust only to immediately throw it away
meanwhile, azune
>ingratiated himself at a high level with not one but two sundered houses
>got a promotion to captain
>successfully covered for his friends multiple times, and implicated the tachonis in multiple crimes, managing to sow distrust between them and einfasen
>also managed to raise an army of 300 men willing to take up arms at any time for him
every schemer except azune has been completely worthless, or worse, a detriment to the cause.

>lgbt progressive bullshit
I watched these shows and there's hardly any gay in them. You're clearly just posting fanart by gay twitter artists. the actual show is just straight up frat boy humor and straight couples. Even when they had some implied gay casual gay couple, the one guy then started going out with the elf girl in their party. The bard was the cliche perv but he was a straight perv.

The jokes are all "haha we got drunk and threw up and now I gotta fight monsters with a hangover."

That's too LGBT progressive for you? Fake shit. You retards are always blowing smoke pretending to be made about your fake culture war shit.
>>
>>98736620
in their second campaign, which has now begun being adapted into the mighty nein animated series, about 80% of the main characters are lgbt. and anyone who has watched critical role for 10 years is well aware that over half of the npcs in the world of exandria are some type of rainbow person.

>nd anyone who has watched critical role for 10 years is well aware that over half of the npcs in the world of exandria are some type of rainbow person
then how do you know all of this? Big fan? It's super gay and ruining everything but you tune in for the multi hour streams?
You're so full of shit.

>>98737182
>actually knows nothing about the show
>desperately wants it to be the tranny antichrist
The jokes are that the big barbarian is retarded, the bard gets all the pussy, and they're all alcoholics.
It feels less like a pride fest and more like Always Sunny or else every stoner frat humor movie made in the '00s.
Your boogeyman isn't here.
>>
>>98739345
yes, I’ve seen every episode. I never said it’s ruining everything. and scanlan the bard is bi in the cartoon. you also have vax being bi and kima and allura being lesbos. but it’s true vox machina is straighter than the mighty nein.
>>
>>98739965
>scanlan the bard is bi in the cartoon
typical game of "he's bi but they never show it". If this series is actually gay the actual show is afraid to show it. Then mighty nein sounds like it's going the disney route of "lesbians are ok but too much male gay is icky."
>>
>>98740116
scanlan swoons over and hits on a shirtless male construction worker at the end of the briarwood story in the first season. and before that he flirts with a mustached man at the dinner in emon when vm first meet the briarwoods. at that same dinner he also wears a codpiece that is the bi flag.
>>

so weird they do these talk show things live when the players have clearly recorded several episodes we haven’t seen yet, and you can tell they are literally lying with some of their answers because they don’t want to spoil things.

I wish I had the English skills to write like Lovecraft. What is the secret sauce to making beautiful posts like this?
>>
>>98695429
Brennan is perfectly capable of making a genuine pro-theist argument so I think it's genuinely just Ashley being retarded and perpetually lost and confused like always.

One of his better guest appearances on an actual play was when he played a True Faith having religious vampire hunter on a VTM podcast and he was genuinely too good at the job and the retarded players like Erika Ishii (yeah, her) were genuinely so stupid and unsympathetic that they basically got dunked on completely when trying to argue with him and only got bailed out with protagonist plot armor and resorting to supernatural violence like the disgusting man-eating monsters with delusions of grandeur they were.

this post reminds me of having to listen to the cr cast retcon the morality of the gods in c3 in a way that was so painfully obviously agenda-driven that it completely destroyed any interest in exandria, the world they spent a decade playing in and built their entire multimillion dollar company around.
I just looked at their yt channel and the oneshot they did last year for fjord and jester’s wedding still has less than a million views nearly a year later. before c3 caused their viewership to nosedive, that episode would’ve had a million views the week it went up.

A piece of shit and objectively bad player who got booted - from the show and from their RL friendship - after around 20 episoders of C1 , but people on here latch on him as the misunderstood messiah because they don't like the other CR people
>>
>>98656524
I liked when they maimed a city official, shipped him off to bumfuck nowhere to avoid repercussion, killed his security detail to the last man for being at fault of doing their job at protecting him, and destroyed the vital city infrastructure he was managing by freeing the elemental that was powering it, all of this in a time of war.

All because he had been vaguely shitty to one PC's literal whore of a mother. And NOTHING came from it
>>
>>98695429
