What happened with those games?
>>98572741Malifaux and Infinity we're both insanely unbalanced. I tried playing both of them for about a year but after a few games it fell into the exact same pattern every time, some factions just could not compete with others.
Got a whiff of the money gw makes every second then hubris kicked in and started making dumb decisions GW would have made and got away with. But they don’t have the paypiggies GW has to get away with things. And eventually even indie defense league autists will be forced from the denial stage to downplay stage and eventually the acceptance stage and they jump ship.
>>98572741Warmachine? Doing surprisingly well, won't return to its heights, but I don't think its strugglingInfinity? Doing as it always did, which is not too badMalifaux? Don't know actually, probably dead
i got malifaux off the ground. it was fun, then waacfags moved on to it during a lull in 40k and killed it in my area. that and they rotated editions real fast making it harder to keep up with. Having everything on cards is nice until they errata the cards a bunch of times and now they dont match what you have
>>98572788Malifaux is still going, just not as hard as the other ones since it’s still niche. They didn’t do massive overhauls to the extent Warmachine did, but they killed and swapped a fair few of their commander units.
>>98572763/threadInfinity is genuinely somehow more expensive than GW on a mini-by-mini basis. I think last time I checked a set of admittedly cool warrior nuns they were 75€ for a 9 pack. Thats like 8€ per mini.
>>98572741>committed suicide>unbalanced, boring minis>unbalanced, gay minis, edition churn
>>98573176Oh and >overpriced for Infinity
>>98572756Fucking GOOD. There ate born Winners and born losers in life, and im always a Winner Baby!!
>>98572788Warmachine isn't getting played. Before they fucked it up, it was played more than any other non-GW game. It's fallen so far from grace that any claims of it "doing OK" are laughable.
>>98572788Malifaux's hit a lull since they released the last edition and are trying to update the existing sculpts that need updating.
>>98572741Infinity has just had a new starter box drop, and other than flyers is in a really good place balance wise. It's the start of a new comp season, so lots of new mission packs and stuff to spice up the game are getting released. A few additional subfactions have been added, and some old ones revamped. Life is good.
>>98572741It doesn't help that /tg/ hates those games.
>>98573296What happened? I remember giving it a shot when 6th Ed 40k launched as unplayable flyer spam. I didn't care for Warmahordes but in my shitty hometown of Seattle it was super popular. Did they just shit the bed?
>>98572741Infinity dropped the Merovingian faction and got the slow death it deserved for that.
>>98572741Top took off when 40k was at its lowest point in its entire existence, then decided to commit suicide at the exact moment 40k got its shit together. Pure comedy.Middle and bottom were never that popular in the first place. They remain "not really that popular" and probably will always be "not really that popular."
>>98573446With 3rd edition, yeah. They had hit a problem with bloat and the current team at the time didn't know how to handle it, and what they tried fed into. After they all left, 4th came out and went "Here's updated rules for everything, but from now on, we're doing a time skip and starting semi anew." 4th cut down heavily on the army bloat and is focused on smaller, self-contained army choices, instead of a few main factions to dump everything into. Then SFG bought it from PP, and has been trying new things.
>>98573158Meanwhile, a 60-point ork Trukk is $85 now. You can get an entire 300-point tournament ready army for infinity for $100.
>>98573701I'm pretty convinced that anyone who says something is now GW-level prices, hasn't looked at GW prices in the last decade.
>>98573446PPG basically self-immolated. They stopped selling at a discount to distributors/LGSs (so you paid a mark up or bought direct), and cut the design team to nearly zero. They simultaneously put out army lists that were increasingly large with free (in points) units to further bloat, and raised MSRP. They made any "competitive" list require the giant centerpiece models, while also entirely shutting down the community outreach and recruitment program (press gangers, iirc). All of this while 40k was recovering from the late 5th through 7th downturn.
>>98572741This is the only true answer.CEO changed from Kirby to Rountree in 2015. All other games live and die according to GW's fortunes. Games do not do well because they're good games. They do well because GW is waning. Everyone forgets its a social game, at the end of the day, GW is buying players using stores, cornering the market and ensuring that even in its worst days, they'll still have a legion of fans.2015- 40k 8th edition came out. 6th-7th were wildly unbalanced, you could tell Kirby didn't care at all, and they let people like Phil Kelly to buff eldar to the sky, or cruddace to hand out random nerfs with no sense or pattern. This is the peak of warmachine, 2015 MKII where you had the sickest combos, 2 turn tabling, 1 turns assassinations, no turn wins, 70+ model infantry spam to fuel instant-win spell bombs. Not a single warjack in sight.2016 - 8th fixed a lot of issues, and made a whole line of new toys - marine toys, to sell infinite models. Not in the grognard squat drippy style, but a sleek, modern corporate COD tacticool style. They even had COD skull helmet guys. MK3 was initially a good edition that faltered as GW ate all of PP's market share. Sculpts were getting dumpier and uglier as they moved to soicast, that appealed to grognards with the shallowest pockets. PP panicked, created shit rules to force sales, fired all their press gangers, took away the forum due to backlash and died.2017 - Rise of infinity from the ashes of warmahordes. 8th wasn't as polished of an edition as 10th/11th we have today. Game was still very unbalanced and didn't have balance updates. Infinity had really nice looking models, but 2 massive weakness - GW released contrast paint, which worked well with tacticool marines, but not for detail packed infinity models. Their rules were much more complex than 40k's, with a lot of nested rules, some even being double or triple nested.
>>985739052020 - Beginning of the end. Lockdowns combined with GW's corporate might and vidya push 40k into the mainstream. Trump memes of god-emperor push GW to the cultural forefront. No one cares about some obscure modern-futuristic political drama about nested squad warfare. Then 10th comes out, balancing updates come out, SM2 comes out, DOW4 is announced, TW:40k is announced. GW ends all other wargames.GW sits on his throne, crown heavy on his brow. He has come to a level they would never have dreamed of even a decade ago. Rountree will feast like a god, women, drugs, luxuries beyond human comprehension. The only question - where to next? A warhammer cinematic universe doesn't seem that far off. If Rountree pulls this off, he will officially be named as the 6th warp god, next to the 4 and the emperor. No, not even next to them, but ABOVE them, for they wouldn't even exist without his mercy.
>>98572788accurate
>>98573905Anon contrast paints are practically made for infinity models. I'm not sure what you're talking about there.
Infinity abandoned their original art direction, not to create their own identity but to placate the mob of people angry about anime girls. It was never balanced at all, but people loved it. Not so much anymore.
>>98573158Yeah and that's 50% of an army in many cases. How many % of an army do you get for 75EUR in 40k?
>>98573905>GW released contrast paint, which worked well with tacticool marinesContrast paints are at their best on textured surfaces, they're complete ass for marines.
>>98573905>>98573929Anon spittin! No truer words have been typed!
>>98573506>>98573775Also very true
>>98572741WarmaHordes Shay the bed with horrible editions that killed the game. Infinity still exists but has not grown much for the past decadeMalifaux is almost totally dead with very little interest.
>>98575035Juan Hidalgo disagrees
>>98575426Contrasts Juan is an outlier and should not have been counted.
>>98572756I don't hate that about Infinity, I just think their roster got bloated and the models lost their sovl
>>98574214Yeah, this. It was ripping off Shirow complete with anime girls: the game that simultaneously had an identity of its own
>>98573192Why are you talking like a 1920s mafia henchman.
>>98575631Well this is a well known gooner board
>>98573486They're back though?
>>98572756Textbook example of skill issue
>>98573717It's pretty hilarious, yes. Tho if price is such an issue, why would they look into GW pricing?
>>98572741>WarmachineGot greedy and fumbled their advantage when 40k released a less worse edition. Owner ego, bad business decisions, killing their unpaid volunteer program, an 'End Times' style universe conclusion and absolutely fumbling Monsterpocalypse, led to the company folding and being bought out. Steamforge is slowly trying to bring it back, to mixed results. >InfinityStill going, just not as explosively popular as it once was. In the middle stages of it's lifetime. Arguably in a good financial position given how the company is expanding.>MalifauxStill in it's unique niche, but like Infinity, not in an explosively popular phase. Still groaning along under new management and editions. All 3 have varying regional popularity.
>game is doing good>edition change happens>models/armies get more expensive, aesthetic shifts to something less appealing, some models/factions get discontinued>game stops doing as good
>>98573446>Make game for waac compfags>This made waac compfags happy>And /tg/ shitters mald who's screeched for years >Make edition for /tg/ shitters>Sucks for compfags so they leave >Turns out /tg/ shitters just like kvetching they ain't playing:0
>>98576301I was the guy playing the broken factions.
>>98576537>umm akshually there were two skill issues!
>>98576520/tg/ shitters are the woke gaming crowd of tabletop.
>>98574551It's still 8€ per miniature. And to be frank, comparing a skirmish wargame to one that involves a massive army is not fair. If you want to compare it to a GW game mode, Kill Team would fit best. And Kill Teams are 50 bucks or so. Which is still extremely expensive.Games Workshop is insultingly expensive. I genuinely hate Games Workshop pricing and weep over how much money I wasted before I discovered cheaper/better brands. If your small little indie wargame (tm) is even more expensive that the poster boy for corporate greed, expect no sympathy from me.
>>98572741they're all still in print, and doing well enough to be a regular presence at cons. none of them are really much like the indy games they were in the 00s though. they basically all turned into baby GWs, with all the fomo-marketing and edition churn that implies.>>98573296that's true, but it's also about a decade out of date. privateer press and their many mistakes are ancient history at this point. not that the new publisher isn't also making mistakes, they're just different mistakes.
>>98572741GW is run by normies and realizes you have to cycle in new players every couple years and doesn't care about the grogs. Other game companies still think like gamers and want to build a stable scene even though it's not really profitable to cater to people who already own multiple armies and have long-running groups. >>98572805>waacfags moved on to it during a lull in 40k and killed it in my area40K refugees always do that shit. They'll get into a non-40K game and try to treat it like a competitive tourney scene and just move on like a swarm of locusts with nothing left to consume. They did it to Battletech a few years ago, just played it repeatedly and then lost 100% lost interest. And that was a game/setting some of my friends have been obsessed over for decades.
>>98573701And you can get a kill team for half that, what's your point?
>>98586735>picHoly kek. This reads like a parody. Imagine if somebody ever manages to make a casual and popular enough napoleonic game to attract 40kfugees.>max imperial guard foot grenadiers>three fusilier units to protect artillery>two naked chasseur units to fulfill troop requirement>one light cavalry unit>rest of the points to artillery
>>98588893>you can get a kill team for half thatNo you can't.
>>98573176>boring minisThe worst infinity mini looks leagues better than the average 40k mini
