As I was saying in the other thread. GW should release a classic 40k based on a pre 8th core ruleset. With the complexity baked into the core gameplay and rules, and simpler codex’s like it was in the old days.

Bring back armor values, bring back damage charts, bring back ws and bs. Deflate the insanely bloated strength and toughness values. Make 40k classic feel like a wargame again.
>>
>>98586638
it happens because this general (on its surface) is half hobby and half wargame, so if you were take either one out it wouldn’t be so big, but because both have to be included you get that wall of text. not like this is a problem anyway, just scroll down lol.

What's the deal with the 5e LARPers? People being upset and switching to old editions is nothing new but majority of them was moving back to 3.5e (3e codexes and 4e rules). Nowadays I see a lot of comments from people that claim they are dropping the current 40k in favour of 5e. I know the consensus is that 5e is simply shit compared with 3e or even 4e since 3e had the best codexes and 4e rules are simply refined 3e rules so they come with best of both worlds. Is the 5e "hype" some kind of Discord psyop?

Only 2nd ed has a decent amount of (aging) players.
3-5th ed games are a meme. They talk about it but very few people actually play them among friends in private groups
Part of the reason is that nobody agrees in what middle hammer rules to use. Everybody has their own biases.

That failed project isn’t gonna be forgotten will it?
I had the idea of a fan continued 4th edition in my head for a while and when femstodes got first announced I thought it was a “now or never” moment even though I had no idea where to start except planting the seed of the idea through musing it then making a thread to start it.
It was a calculated risk but I was never good at math. I still deeply regret the thing as it is most likely used as an argument to why the days of shit (good shit) being done are gone.
I’m sorry lads.

I feel like the universe is telling me to make up for the blunder but I have no idea what to do.
Maybe just keep 4th intact and add post 4th released model stats? But then primaris stuff would cause shitflinging for obvious reasons.
I think the guard too as forgeworld’s guard stuff was supposedly overpowered as well.

Build diy wet palette. And use a ceramic tile (I got one for less than 50 Canadian cents) metallics and washes. Keep paints thin. Do not get paint in the ferrule.
Do not be afraid to mess up your first mini.
Prime the miniature so the paint won’t flake off.
A lot of this is projecting my first time mistakes.

I’m happy you did your homework and preparation work on your first models.
I think your Armageddon basing is fine as Armageddon’s surface is a sandy wasteland so it works. If I am properly remembering.
Your first models look good.
Have you considered using the torn sponge piece weathering technique to create paint chipping?

Heavily thinned down brown paint can work as rust too. Skrag brown or equivalents can work. I think they have to be like brown milk watery then a little more water.

It wasn't lol random. It was meant to simulate a variety of outcomes possible on a battlefield. Everything now is too abstracted and genericized. You can't blow off a weapon off a vehicle anymore, let alone hit the driver through the view port and cause it to go out of control as a result. That kind of stuff made it feel more like a simulationist wargame than the board game feel of modern 40k

As someone with a 3rd edition Ork codex sitting right next to me there is no way you can say that 3rd has the best codices. There are literally no reliable range anti-tank in the entire book. Rolling up against something like Guard was practically an auto-lose. KFFs, tank buster bombs and powerklaws just do cut it especially when most units could not take dedicated transports.
>>
>>98586746
Best advice I can give is to get a notebook from a dollar store to write down your paint schemes and what paints were used in case you forget. Maybe the dollar store will have stuff that might be useful for mini painting too.
There’s been mention of glass nano files used on hard plastic to remove mould lines. I’m not sure if the dollar store glass nail files will work from the makeup section.
I’ve read that those files don’t work nice with resin and get damaged from metal.

Why even play wargames at that point that try to simulate battles? Go play chess or checkers if you don't enjoy randomness. You're the reason why everything has a reroll nowadays.

Admittedly warhammer 40k is basically at a point where only the ip holder can kill it.
I think Disney’s fumbling of the Star Wars ip contributed to a big move to 40k.
No “x killer” ever killed the big boy of the medium as far as I know. No halo killer worked. No wow killer. There will be no warhammer 40k killer.

That's not a good argument for quality though. It's the classic Michelin Star restaurant vs McDonald's. McDonald's is the most popular and highest revenue restaurant on the planet, but no one would claim it's " the best " or even a particularly good place to buy food. The same can be applied to this argument for wargames.
>>
>>98586839
For me it is autistic tradition for metal acrylics.
For washes like contrasts and inks it is so the wet palette moisture doesn’t get excessive as I usually water my washes down.

I use a aluminum dimple tray for that though. The fidget toy things might be better.
I need to clean my silver dimple tray palette.

Thank you. I looked up the sponge method, looks handy I'll deff experiment with it in the future.
For the rust I followed Ninjon's method of base coating the mini with a wash that's a mix or red, brown and a bit of black, then when painting metal bits highlight the raised areas and then swipe bit by bit to create a mix of rust and metal/paint on others or leave some zones more rusty painting around them. Also followed his tip for the skin create a darker green mix for a base coat then paint over with Orruk flesh, since Orruk flesh is annoying to apply vanilla to dark surface. And the tip for doing a red was in between the following 2 vannila Orruk paint coats to make the skin look lively and help eith shading.

I wish they included a yellow and blue instead of dawnstone so it would be easier to color mix what I want. Wanted to do the purple/pink energy for weirdboy and pale pink Ork lips and some yellow for certain bits and squig eyes. Wasn't happy with the White + Mephiston red on lips so kept em darker.

You know with the new Ork prices it won't be long before a 2000 point army costs more in dollars than in points. The Trukk is already one of those things. Soon a 2000 point army will cost 3000 dollars. And at that point I don't want GW fanboys to say "well a gaming PC costs 1500 dollars or you need to pay for online etc" or complain about plenty of other hobbies.

I can go to my local shooting range for 10 years and rent their guns for a price of a 2k point ork army.

The ceramic tile thing would actually be useful for when I use oils... I mucked up one of my plastic paletes and having been using wet palete sheets for the oils, which is actually not great, the oils are getting sucked out of the paint into the sheet after a couple of hours, drying out the paint.

I've been reeeeeeally tempted to get into printing because of the pricing. I can get a Saturn 4 16k with the curing station and washer, plus some peripherals for around $1000cad, which would let be buy something like 1400 pts of the Eldar army I want. Really depends on the comp I want to go for. The problem is, half the stuff I want is out of stock in most game stores, and the one place that has it is scalping the price by 15%.

IDK anon, I was just a secondary until recently and I always thought the Mordians, Elysians, Vostroyans were cooler than Cadians. Dkok are metal, so they get a pass. I really thought they should make "Cadians X Troops" just generic guard troops so you can run your army as any regiment you want. Probably has to do with their fucking copyright autism though.

That used to be how it worked as recently as 9th edition, so just a little over 3 years ago. They split them into different datasheets because each troops box has different special weapons on the sprue. Yes, this is entirely a problem of their own making with several solutions, including just not fucking doing that.

I’ve played a bit of darktide because it looked fun and I enjoyed vermintide.
My steam library has a large amount of warhammer to the point where I sometimes look at it and ponder if I’ve become another consoomer meme. Most are the dawn of war and sm1 and sm2.
But I heard battlesector is actually scanned models so I’d buy it just to rip the 3d models for printing unless an online library from others who have done that already hasn’t been done.

I think the indie scene is stagnating too as it is mostly pixel shit or has pretentious deep vibes if that makes sense.
I also think I’ve been less keen on games is because of indie devs being weird and narcissistic or both and triple a game devs being shitty at game quality and unfortunately validating the gamer gate fearmongering a decade ago.
Or maybe I just suck at games and interests more now as my sister has beaten the dank souls stuff and is a good artist.
She isn’t into warhammer 40k and maybe it is for the best.
>>
>>98586959
>I know dkok got a lot of attention but why didn’t elysians get much of a fan following?
krieg was cheaper but the ww aesthetic obviously beat out the scifi vibe.
also I'd say that krieg had more varierty of unique sculpts. like you had their infantry advancing and at rest and a bunch of special units.

Basically a regular acrylic wash and speedpaint medium (Armypainter’s contrast medium) mixed makes washes behave in a way I like as they don’t tint the model too much but shade the details.
I think two coats might be needed for best results. Been a while since I painted and I need to fix my basement setup.

I think this will work for gw washes and their contrast medium mixed 50/50 as well.

Victory needs no explanation.
Quantity has a quality of its own. GW sales and the amount of players increased several times since your supposed downward spiral. And the bad changes mostly only affected a fraction of SM players/collectors.

I don't like many of the changes, but I also didn't like many things before, so it has been a sidegrade for me and most of the old fans.

Sorry guys, your old good new bad meme doesn't hold up. Just ask DG, Necron, Nid, and now Ork players.

Fair enough.
Oddly enough I really didn’t like cadians that much then the previous ones grew on me as I came across the concept of eclectic uniformed armies.
Then the new cadians came around and I started to like the previous ones more because they seem to have the most compatible bits but also because there’s a hint of old good new bad on me despite how I like the new cadians. Maybe it is preference. I couldn’t tell ya.
I still like Krieg. Maybe it is the cadians said to be generic on purpose standard template many guard emulate that makes me like them more because they can in theory be a lot of other different regiments.

I do like the moebian sixth from darktide because of their maulers and ogryns. It makes me sometimes ponder how effective they were as loyalists or if the chainaxe mauler is just a new unit they have due to being renegades with less supply sources now.

I have acquired some remakes of the new cadians and some close enough remakes of the heavy weapons.
If my pc comes back and is properly working I’ll try to resize stuff in blender to make the new cadians have the previous proportions.

The older Cadians were alot easier to paint because they had less detail while still having character, that's why they peaked, the new Cadians are objectively better sculpts, their designs still based on the original idea but they are frustrating to paint because of the additional small bits.
The Sentinel is a much better discussion point, the big problem with the new sentinel is, that it's n longer basing itself on the older design, the biggest issue being the round cockpit and the 1 window panel.
I wonder if people had the same gripes when the last sentinel removed the first sentinel.

It's a miniature company, they need to sell models for their games and there will always be refreshes and models being declared obsolete, a model will never be a timeproof investment.

>victory needs no explanation
Many times the wrong ones won when they shouldn’t have.
Or didn’t face the resistance they should have.
There’s a famous example of a&w releasing a bigger competitive burger to McDonald’s quarter pounder. But Americans didnt know it was mathematically bigger because of the 1/3 name labeling and the price meant more meat too.

We’re seeing something like this to warhammer 40k where the masses just lap up the new stuff and don’t notice the stagnation. Even the most blatant to sell toys lore writing too. I get that warhammer lore is to sell stuff but it doesn’t have to be so over the top. I think the Macharius tank lore is a good balance between two sell toys and grimdark balance. Prices going up not just with gw but everything isn’t helping either.

Ackshually that's the "fault" of the old school FW treadheads. Apparently they saw the sponsons as silly and unrealistic, so their Russes had them removed.

I agree there's no need for infiltrators and incursors, they're niche units that are defined entirely by off-the-table datasheet abilities, which sucks for a miniatures game. New Infiltrators being forward deployment character assassins at least gets closer to the class fantasy.

Reivers are incredibly dorky but fun and have done well for me. Eliminators suck but snipers are cool. A consolidated incursor-infiltrator datasheet would have been good, but it doesn't seem like they've done that.

okay, but they make full SM redundant at certain tasks in the game, and that is bad

nonsense. Scout armour has nothing to do with that, and never has been.

I agree, they should have calves without cut outs. But the rest is somewhat ok. They would look better with exposed arms, though.

No, I told you, I collected everything for my one specific autistic fixation which I greatly favour over everything else, but if I weren't autistic I would definitely make multiple small collections instead, and not of every faction, and not of every model of those factions, and not because I would somehow like them equally with no specific attachment.
Even in my one collection I do have more attachments regarding specific models and units but I also collected everything else.

Most people pick up killteam if they play 40k since they have the models. I play Novitiates and Insidiants. I like the rules.
I played khador and cygnar in warmachine for the first couple editions, but I haven't played in years. That was a really fun game.
I play rebels in star wars legion. Great game but I rarely get to play.
I play Lumineth in AoS. I like AoS but I rarely get to play these days.
Oh I played rebels in X-Wing and I play Luminara in Shatterpoint. But it's been years since I played either of those.
I bought into a few others over the years that didn't stick around like Dark Age, also fun but the handful of people at my store that bought in didn't stick with it.
Moving to another city that has no large stores has really killed playing anything that isn't 40k. I moved from one of the best wargaming cities to one that has very little.

These are all good games that offer different experiences than 40k. I've never played a "bad" game, it's just that most of them don't stick around and/or aren't as popular so finding someone to play with is harder.

I am tempted by the new starcraft game but I'll probably not collect since it would be another case of hard to find a game. I already only play 40k against another human maybe once a month and mostly just do practice/demos with my own armies.

Don't argue with these people.
You can show them a million different variations, you can point out the models now have different chest plates, leg greaves, and small differences even between the mkX helmets. Differences that didnt exist before because every box had the exact same model just in a different pose. If anything they match most with SW because of the mismatched armour variations being standard now. But it doesn't matter because the frame of the marine is primaris and they'll always bitch about it.

Retard we know that, everyone has admitted this is an improvement, but it's not good enough. It's like 20% of the way there to having the variation and aesthetic quality of the old Tactical kit. They had twice as much variation in chest plates and greaves, 10x as much in the helmets, infinity as much in the backpacks, more variation in the shoulder pads, in the belts, they had cables, they had studded legs, they had special weapons and heavy weapons and shit. I'm not paying for this pathetic downgrade.

All it's saying is that INSIDE the armour some of them can be primaris if you want to imagine that because you are a faggot who likes that lore rape. But that it's the SAME exact armour that the firstborn have always been wearing, and there are also Firstborn inside the suits. The height difference is now negligible. Black Library had already begun retconning it anyways, and Firstborn in Horus Heresy had already been scaled up much taller.

I prefer the new WS/BS and AP systems and the newer range of strength and toughness and wounds because it gives a wider variety of units instead of literally all infantry being 1W T3 or T4. They could reasonably should make getting 2+/6+ to wound like 3+ or higher difference instead of double the strength/toughness to keep the numbers down if they wanted to.

People who bitch about wanting the old rules often forget that it just turns into spamming lascannons with vehicles blowing up in 1 turn the moment theyre visible and it has a lot of retarded oddities such as armor being completely worthless or 100% impervious, like a heavy kills a tau firewarrior but then doesnt even better penetrate the armor of marine compared to a lasgun. The lack of a damage stat also makes multi wound models wierd

>>98587200
tankbusta/breaka boy kits for anti tank and killa kanz are a really good choice. Another combo is squighog boyz + a squigosaur

>>98587447
Most units jumped 15-20% in price for example 10 boyz is 90 points and a warboss is 100, not sure about wargear costs but certain weapons such as lascannons and multi-meltas now cost an extra 5 points but units that had these had their base point costs cut so not taking them gets you cheaper units than before the wargear costs. Orks are S5 base now but the strength and attack buffs got removed from the waaagh! GW is basically trying to make orks effective all game long instead of being stuck to 1 turn. Lots of shooting got lethal hits vs non vehicles/monsters to compensate for cover now reducing BS
>>

>>
>>98587883
>the article is not saying anything about the new models representing firstborn marines
That's literally what all of those paragraphs of text posted above are talking about. Everything it is saying is specifically in regard to the new models. Saying "Firstborn wear them too" is talking about the NEW kit. The old one was retconned out of existence when these released, there are not different sizes of Terminator armour, these are just the newest kit representing the SAME suits that always existed, the old Terminators are now retroactively always this big.

Primaris in general, just look gay, is all. They just look meh. I just don't like them. Won't pay money for them. It's really that simple. Models are expensive and if GW wants me to spend money on models they need to make them more than just average or good enough, they have to be exceptional, they have to tickle my brain in all the right ways, they have to be fucking awesome. Primaris are just super fucking mid. Some of them in previous editions were downright bad, awful even, but these days they're usually just mid. But mid isn't good enough for my money. Sorry! I'm just not going to buy them is all. Why don't you make some space marines like this, James?

>That's literally what all of those paragraphs of text posted above are talking about
no, the article says that fluffwise now both firstborn and primaris can wear terminator armor, it says nothing about the actual new models being firstborn marines insides, also because they're obviously all primaris due to the size.
The old one was retconned out of existence when these released
no, it wasn't, it kept being sold for a while, and the assault version even longer, the two coexisted nice together for a while because fluffwise both firstborn and primaris can wear the armor, so you could buy the new primaris one or the old firstborn ones, or mix and match them, since they don't even have different equipments or rules anyway.

Like I said, you're mad because it's still a primaris with a monopose torso frame and not just the same tactical marine kit that's upscaled.
GW could come out tomorrow and say that intercessors are now being made to play like tactical marines with some more weapon options and new variations in bits, and you'd still be unhappy because it's a mkx primaris frame no matter what. There is no solution here for you lot that isn't short of getting a time machine and walking into GW with a gun demanding no changes.

There's actually a really easy solution dude, they just make a fucking upscaled Tactical kit the same size as the Horus Heresy plastic marines that mixes and matches bits from all the different marks from 2 through 7 and they give it 40k rules.
>>
>>98587943
>there's no solution other than fixing the mistake
I mean, yeah.
If we wanted to COMPROMISE, giving the intercessors some special and heavy weapons that get them closer to the way marines are supposed to play makes it easier to use real marines as "legendary proxies", but I have a whole fuckton of plasma gun guys with battleline arrows that don't have a home now that they can't go in a battleline squad

All you have to do is post where the article says anything about the new models specifically representing firstborn too, rather than tall about the fluff in general.

But you can't do that, because it doesn't say anything like that, because the new models are all primaris.

Okay but the suits aren't Primaris they're the same suits as before and the Firstborn Terminators were always that height too. Because they're not even new suits, they're LITERALLY the same suits that were already around before Primaris appeared. You can even see this old art from over a decade before Primaris that has the proportions of the new models, so this is always what the models were meant to represent.

I have always agreed that the intercessors should have been made to play like tacticals from a rules standpoint, and that they should be able to have those options to hold a melta, a plasmagun, etc. Things like hellblasters, infernus, and other specialized units wouldn't really be effected by this because they can still be useful as separate units. My original post was always about the aesthetic choices of the models, not how they play. Because I personally would have preferred that intercessors be released with the same rules, just better than firstborn in terms of stats.

Darktide ost is honestly overrated. It sounds cool, but feels too much like Kyd doing his own electric music and classic music mix just like Hitman instead of fitting it to 40k. He did better in VT2 where Skaven and Norscans got their own music. Making Skaven music sound as if it was performed on broken instruments was a stroke genius

Rogue Trader has much better ost. Every faction has completely different vibe and style. Chaos battle music is some metal/rock, Imperial typical choirs, Deldar high pitched orchestra etc.

I mean I think the pinnacle of the game is having a match with someone you have a real relationship with. Tournaments make sense since everything is planned out in advanced. I am just trying to make sense of open play style scheduling at venues. I think nowadays its more of free or paid table reservation system than social hour where you find someone to play with on the spot. But I could be wrong.

The pinnacle of the game is campaign play with a group of dudes who all do homebrew and everyone is making conversions of their own personal dudes and writing little bits of lore and rules based on the results of the games. This is literally how Ghazghkull and Yarrick* were made btw, it just happened to be GW game designers who were making those dudes so it all became official.

* Sort of it Yarrick's case, his lore predates the 40k games, but it evolved based on them

What annoys me the most about T5 marines is that someone has to stay at the bottom of the totem pole, we can't all be brought up to the marine standard, and the unit that will very obviously not get more thoughness and strength is the humble genestealer cultist.
The army that is struggling right now because it has no way to deal with heavy armor, while everyone else has plenty of anti-horde.
The army that has no tanks, with its only non-transport vehicle profile being extremely lackluster
The army that is shackled to the ridgerunner datasheet to get it back up to a standard AP, which GW seems to have forgotten because they keep making it more expensive as if we can choose to not take them
The army with it's devastator equivalents, the acolyte hybrids, nerfed into oblivion to the point that nobody takes them for the special weapons anymore.
The army that consistently has to skip on activations to make it to the 1:30 mark in tournaments because of how many models we're forced to take.
It sucks to be a hybrid.

Nice start. Do you plan on using the flyer as an attack craft or is it just a transport? If just a transport, maybe strip it of extra weapons, keeping mostly defensive ones as it descends from orbit, drops its payload, and leaves.

I wonder if you could fill the railgun housings with mechanical arms that clamp onto the suit. Like a harness. They could come over the shoulders and after the suit drops, fold into the housings. IG Sentinel legs have been used for large servo-arms before, though I don't know well the current ones work. Might use some cabling and tubing connecting the two, but don't know how it'd interfere with removing the suit from the flyer.

They want less total models on the field across the board.
They decreased the point cost for guard tanks to the point where 5/8 Russ variants are the same point cost or cheaper than 20 Cadians.
At GW prices, one Russ kit is $70, and 20 Cadians are $106 (2x53). This alone indicates my conclusion, or at the very least they thought about how hard it'd be for guard to fight the new marine statline (without considering any other faction, such as GSC or SoB).

I'm being greedy and trying to magnetize it to swap between the attack aircraft or the transport.

so in order to do that, I'm going to create the harness/cradle in such a way that it glues to the riptide instead of the tiger shark, and then the whole riptide is actually held on by magnets. The mechanical arms from the railgun housing is actually a really good idea though and I have the perfect bits to use for that.

You could always magnetize the extra weapons for swapping between transport and attack craft. Maybe put extra fuel tanks or thrusters in their place for the transport variant to help with carrying the suit. The Razorshark comes with wing mounted extra engines.

Okay, Nids vs Eldar won. Take&Hold mirror. Deployment is finished. Everyone deployed on the line ready to go fight over objectives. Nids had a couple infiltrators. Neither side has any reserves.

Right now would be a good time to take bets. My money is on the nids. They have a lot of monsters in this list and not much for the guardians and dire avengers to shoot at. Banshees charging will still blender stuff though, and the fire prisms will pull heavy duty, so we'll see.

Super fun turn. The Dire Avengers with Asurmen hopped out of their wave serpent for some short range shooting, and wiped the genestealers+broodlord. 40 shots, Asurmen's special rule, Guardian host member on an objective is no joke. The other units in range helped a little, and that was that. Our levi jeans will remain firmly in our possession for today.

One of the fire prisms also just popped the screamer killer straight up. It had cover behind some ruins but it still just hit, wounded, boom 12 damage. Eldar may be in rough shape but the fire prism still does heavy lifting, so glad I got 2.

Scored 2 for primary, 2 for Display of Might, and holding on to Engage on All Fronts, for 14 points. Heading into Nids turn 1. Exciting!

do the votann have anything going besides drg memes
i somewhat like them after playing mechanicus 2
an lgs has their old combat patrol and i'm tempted to dip my toesies in them
i'll read the high kahl's oath and see how i feel after the fact
there's something incomplete to them that i can't quite put my finger on but i suspect is simply the lack of decades of context, culture and material that the other factions have
>>
>>98589233
I laugh every time I see the dinosaur wave serpents. I love it
>>
>>98589252
>incomplete
There are only 22 items in the Votann roster, that's why.
>lack of decades of context, culture and material
They feel very much like a product of their creation era, where the rest feel like a product of theirs. The Tau feel very 2000s, the Votann feel very "current day" and it leaves them stunted. If they had leaned back into the original squats a bit more (even just for the land trains), not given them this cassette futurist design (instead going Soviet futurist or even 60s NASA) and actually supporting the roster beyond its introduction, they'd feel more like a real faction.
They need more models, and their design language needs to pick a lane.
>>
>>98589187
Amazing, almost none of this is finished.
>>
>>98589252
They just don't have enough connecting them to the setting and the other factions within it. Not history, no fun rivalries, no interesting stories about a funny interaction with a named subfaction, and no real characters with any character. They feel like a transplanted faction dropped suddenly into the setting like a scab and they didn't make any effort beyond "men of stone" and "demiurge" to disguise that this is exactly what they are.
>>
>>98589271
Dark Eldar, Necrons, and Tau all feel very "2000 AD" in slightly different ways. Definitely a product of the time they were written in.
>>
>>98589233

> Asurmen + full brick of Avengers
I kneel.
>>
>>98589295
I just specifically mentioned Tau because they were the first off of my head
Orks feel extremely 80s
SoB feel extremely 90s
and so on
Votann just feel too clean and sanitized and they aren't taking themselves seriously (both signs of their era) and thus don't fit into the rest of the world's dynamics, even without the lack of written integration.
>>
>>98589252
>there's something incomplete to them that i can't quite put my finger o
Votann are just half assed, trying to do too many things at once, and still less than the sum of their parts:
>squats
>space marines
>nasapunk
>adMech but not religious
>pagan norsemen
>lotr greedy miner dwarves
>evil capitalists but DEI
>danger hair bs
>Zardoz
And their names and cathphrases suck.

They're stillborn and i bet we'll see them squatted again o they'll get a nuDeldar/nuCron makeover
>>
>>98589328
Votann definitely need to be a lot more gritty.
GW should give them a second battleline unit that looks a lot more utilitarian and chunky.
They can link it back to the existing design language so it doesn't look out of place with the characters, and lorewise they can say the Votann PCs are having difficulty producing armour so they had to move back to earlier armour patterns

Which one? They have like 6 that don't work together
This is another problem, there's too many different things going on and nothing works to tie them together. You could even call this a "sign of their era" with too many executive designers in the decision-making process wanting Votann to be 30 different things.
>>
>>98589252
>do the votann have anything going besides drg memes
Me personally, i like that they don't have the silly stereotypes of Dwarves with the whole grudges and stubborness. There's some of that but it's on the same flavor as other things, the more important thing to me about Votann is how they're a remnant of DAoT's lifestyle of living among machines, that lore blurb of Ironkin downloading viruses to their system to get drunk like their fellow kin is some good soul that it makes me want to see more out of them.
My biggest gripe with votann might be the gay nordic runic shit on some models, they should've lean completely on the moonlanding aesthetic, with more land fortresses or weapon platforms or hell, bring back stuff from their squat days like the trikes and trains.

In general? Yea, it's called proxying, just ask your opponent, stick to base sizes and you're fine.
Don't try to mix armies though, that won't go well because there are explicit rules about what units can go where.
>>98589411
SoB are chock full of barely useful infantry, Arbites would just be more of the same that could instead be more Arco-Flagellants or Sacresancts. I wouldn't use Arbites with Sisters, at least with how I play Sisters.

You either pick one that already exist and follow its lore and aesthetics, or you can make your own.
It's a big galaxy.

But don't buy marines designed for one subfactoin and play them as another without changes.

Some chapters have unique rulesets and unique models, ie Guilliman for Ultramarines. He wouldn't be wearing White Scar armor, he'd be wearing Ultramarine armor, so he'd thematically only fit into a list with Ultramarines.
Buy models that are legal in your army list.
>>98589434
Some starter sets are good, some aren't
What army are you looking at to start? Which starter set?
>>98589440
They are VERY good for what they give
140 points for 10 of them
Feel No Pain 5 on a melee unit
60 attacks per attack roll (70 with an attached Ministorum Priest) of s5ap0 with Sustained Hits 1
Give a miracle die when they die to power up your other units
They are phenomenal for the cost, despite being ugly as sin and not fitting the mental image that a lot of people want with their SoB armies.

You either run them up the field eating enemy attacks for you, or you run them up the field in a Rhino to nuke an enemy unit with 70 dice.
>>
>>98589436
>But don't buy marines designed for one subfactoin and play them as another without changes.
This really isn't an issue even in tournaments. The only rule is base size and your opponent has to be able to tell the difference once you've talked them through what datasheet you're using.

I've got Templars, Blood Angels and Dark Angels models in my army. It's not a problem.

Not when finding out how to build, paint, and if you like it. Start small and be surprised how long it takes. Don't overwhelm yourself with mountains of plastic immediately getting a "good deal".

>despite being ugly as sin and not fitting the mental image that a lot of people want with their SoB armies.
Yeah, that's why I'm not considering them. I'm probably going to proxy units or parts for this army so if I come across a good flagellant equivalent I might grab some if they're THAT good.

No. Most online retailers will offer meaningful discounts over GW prices in their region. But it depends where you are. In the UK 15-20% off is pretty standard.

>>
>>98589485
The SoB army gimmick is:
>send units into fight
>some die, give you miracle dice
>miracle dice buff the rest of your army to win harder
So you have to intentionally bring sacrificial units, Flagellants, Mortifiers/Penitent Engines, Repentia are specifically for it.
Flagellants are the "eat bullets" unit
Mortifiers are the same as Flagellants, but bigger (so less models but far tankier) and with guns
PEngines are also the same as Flagellants, but full-in on rushing downfield with flamers or melee
Repentia are glass cannons, they do massive damage in melee but crumble the moment they get hit back

All 4 of these do good work on softening up your enemy and then giving you miracle dice to buff your "actual" units (namely, Morvenn Vahl) to finish the job, so I'd heavily consider bringing or having them.
If you don't intentionally bring SOME sacrificial units to do this, you're effectively playing with half an army rule.
>>98589499
If you're in the US, buy from a third party unless you can't find it anywhere but GW. I suggest CMOgames if you live in the midwest, phenomenal people and they give free shipping on any order over $50 (which is 1 model for 40k anymore).
If you're in the UK, buy from a third party. I'm American so I can't give you any suggestions.
Third party vendors are leagues better for saving you money. 15-20% discounts vs. GW is the standard.
I would personally suggest a combat patrol instead of that box. The current Combat Patrol offerings for marines are Dark Angels, Black Templars, or Blood Angels. Don't get the Space Wolves one, or at least don't mention you have any here.

What a travesty of a turn. The nids didn't remove a single model in their shooting phase, and then only one unit made a charge roll. They racked up 11 wounds on the wraithknight in the shooting phase but then proceeded to fail every single charge. The only unit that got into close combat was the Leapers in the way back corner. Everyone from the deployment zone failed. The leapers are tearing up some guardians in the eldar expansion objective but this was still a terrible turn.
The exocrine makes allies reroll ones but a one got rerolled into a another one so many times. So many 1's and 2's this turn, it was incredible. Way below expected averages. Sometimes the dice just have it out for you.

We might be eating fried nid for dinner tonight.

>i assume strategy trumps all when actually playing the game considering the emphasis you guys put on looks alone above trying to get the absolute best spec guys

Not really. There are definitely units that get dumpstered by rules changes. The thing about 40k that's different compared to something like a CCG though, is that there's a higher entry floor in terms of commitment from a player - you don't just open a few packs or pick out some good cards from a binder to make a deck, you have to take time and put the models together, even (gasp) paint them. So it's important that you should enjoy that part of the game, enjoy looking at the models that are in your army, enjoy putting them together and painting them. An often repeated phrase here is, "Rules are temporary, models are forever." At the end of the day, even if your favorite model has shitty rules, you still have a cool model.

Pic related, a model which has been abhorrently shit for like 9 years, I bought it because I thought it's one of the coolest kits GW has ever made, and as of next week it will actually be decent in the rules, if not competitive. And then maybe in a year or two it won't be. I'll still have a cool model.
>>
>>98589568
I’m down
My LGS sells pre-painted armies for only slightly more than the cost of the original army
Im talking like 10-20$ more
I grab them sometimes if theyre painted reasonably well
>>
>>98589534
In terms of space marines, "making your own dudes" is just a sonic oc recolor. There isn't really much more to it than that, at least as a starting point. You can homebrew lore and characters (that you'd be proxying) later.
>>98589537
My LGS is
>2 counters (one for video games and tchotchkes, one for snacks and buying the rest of the inventory)
>6 tables (4 for MtG, 2 for D&D, you have to schedule time to use them unless they're hosting an event)
>90% of the inventory is D&D, Pathfinder, board games or card games
>they have GW-supplied shelves, but no models (they have a fully-stocked Citadel paints rack though)
Needless to say I buy my shit online
>>98589548
Then check those shops, most also do a 15% discount. If not, shop online like I said.
Buy the units you think look cool, but at least do so inside of a game-legal army roster to start with.
>>98589563
>usable
Yes, but nowhere near optimal. Castigator has aggressively underpowered main gun options, but gives an AP boost to all subsequent attacks, worth it to bring at least one. Exorcist is just "okay." Rhino is a Rhino.
Immolator is very good however, definitely worth it as a transport for Sacresancts with a Hospitaller to hold down objectives.
Paragon Warsuits are a hard requirement in the current SoB roster because they're the only bodyguard unit for Morvenn Vahl.
>>
>>98589548
Sorry, I thought you were asking for vibes. If you want more tactical unit choices, then there are certain roles that you want to be able to fill in every list like a back objective holder, a screening unit, a mobile action monkey, a chaff screen or scouts orinfiltrators to eat early aggression, a front line counter-charger or heroic intervention threat to punish overextension, an uppy-downy or deep strike threat to force the opponent to keep their screens tight, a battleline unit with high OC (2+) just to threaten primary control, an anti-tank unit to deal with high-T high-Sv hulls and monsters, some ranged fire support to soften exposed targets in the midfield, and some bruisers able to go and pick up heavy stuff like Terminators and flip point control.
>>
>>98589568

Worth it if they're not butchered. Do not buy ones that are badly assembled. Badly painted is a 50/50 depending on what kind of paint was used; some come off easy, others don't.
>>98589578
Fair enough, I guess I took it from my perspective too much of knowing a bit of what things are.
I still think that someone looking to start an army would be better served buying a "listed as a combat patrol" combat patrol, namely because of the Land Speeder. It's not really supported on its own, the only place to get one is in that specific kit, so if you decide you like it you'd have to buy another combat patrol to get another. Or buy third-party or secondhand, I guess.

They need to just lean more into all Votann armor being modular pieces built on top of the basic worksuit. We have 5+ Hernkyn wearing the Hearthkyn armor with waistplate and shoulderpads removed, we should get a 3+ save unit that has the extra leg armor the Kahl has.
Also rework weapons to allow more space for decal and freehand work instead of the random scrollwork they've been doing.

>light guard vehicles
My other main army is guard, so this is my specialty
The weakest guard vehicles are t7 (Centaur and Scout Sentinel), so she's still a very welcome addition. A bit overkill at 1k points, but not unwarranted either due to the roster's limitations.
SoB have very few ranged anti-vehicle options; she is one of them, as are the paragon suits. Guard excels at fighting at range, so you need to either beat them at their own game or rush them down.
If they're mostly infantry, Arco-Flagellants and Penitent Engines would be the absolute PERFECT additions to your roster with a Castigator (or 3 if it's a 2k point game) as ranged anti-vehicle support.
>>98589637
Fair enough on all points
I just singled out the LS because it's one of the features of that specific box, meaning it specifically is being orphaned if he then decided to invest further into an army from there, where most of the other combat patrols don't have that problem. Maybe the guard one is like that too, it's half Attillans.

The total warhammer 40k game isn't out for like another year and won't have many factions playable at launch anyways.
The only videogame that replicates the playstyle of 40k accurately is tabletop simulator, but that's by literally just playing the tabletop game with digital models on a digital board. I won't go into detail how to get started with that here though because there are multiple steam groups and discords already dedicated to it you can easily find. It is a decent way to trial different units (and armies) before you buy though.
I will say that I am of the opinion that the tabletop game itself is not so tactically satisfying to be worth playing just for the gameplay without your personal attachment to seeing your own built and painted army being fielded on the board. You lose a lot of the fun of the experience you get playing with a flat screen and premade assets. Rolling dice is just fun, too.

No, full stop. They're either power fantasy wank or overly gamified in a way that isn't emblematic of the tabletop. They're often decent games and can explain the setting somewhat, but not good to explain the tabletop.
>Total War Warhammer game
There are 3, but they're for Warhammer Fantasy, not 40k. The 40k one isn't out yet.
Check US online shops after you check your local stores. CMOgames like I said earlier is my personal suggestion for an online retailer; others are available of course, I just don't like them as much. There's a list on one of the 40k subreddits that is actually useful for this purpose. It's the only time I'd say to go check there.

Really? I always heard they were fun, is the newest total war warhammer game legit in your eyes? Everyone is jizzing over it
>>

I really don't think they'll do another bundle of ork stuff when they already have so much new stock filling up shelf space.
>>
>>98589770
I don't think we're getting the Nob kit until next year, and even if we get it earlier it will be exclusive to a killteam set for the rest of the year, so there's no way they show up in a BF box (unless it's the old Nobs to try and unload stock).

>Now that i think about it the entire setting feels like a blend of OG Warcraft with starcraft

You've got it backwards. Those two settings came after both Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40k.

>like basic Warcraft iii orcs or something
40K Orks proceeded Warcraft Orks.
They're also not noble savages and whiny cunts. Orks are the tribe in 40K who actually enjoy the setting. In the the grim darkness of the far future there is only war and Orks love war.

>20 boys, 10 nobs, 2 trukks, warboss + something else
that’s way too good a deal for GW if you’re implying all that will be in one box.
aside from that, GW is pretty good with shoving the new hotness onto you. pic related was released about a year after the cadian refresh when they could have easily just filled it with the outdated models or leman russes.

wait so Warcraft and StarCraft are knockoffs of warhammer?
>>
>>98589744
>Hydra
>Hellhound
Both of these will eat you for lunch if you don't play around them; Hydra has insane range (72") that chews through infantry and light vehicles, Hellhound chews through infantry. Your army is close range and made mostly of infantry (with the rest made of light vehicles), which makes this predicament another point for Paragon Warsuits and Castigators, or an Exorcist if you get lucky on movement and terrain to keep it out of the line of fire.
I'd consider getting the PEngines and 2 Castigators before getting Vahl and Paragons for what you've described though. The Castigator Battle Cannon is exactly s10.
Your only stronger options are melee weapons (riskier), or one-shot hunter killer missiles (not reliable).

>blend of OG Warcraft with Starcraft
40k came out of the 1980s with Rogue Trader, it predates both by about a decade. If anything, it's the other way around. Even then, it's a sci-fi spinoff of Warhammer Fantasy that outgrew its parent.
>warhammer games are shit
They're not bad games, they're bad as a medium to demonstrate the tabletop game. Good for setting info and lore, bad for unit dynamics beyond "marines are more elite than guardsmen" or "what psykers and ogryns are."
Some of my favorite games of the past 5 years were Warhammer branded (Rogue Trader and Boltgun namely), but none of them show you how the tabletop game works.
>>
>>98589809
Yes, when GW wouldn't give them the licence.
>>
>>98589809
Don't know if you are meme-ing or not, but the original intention for the first Warcraft RTS game was to get the Warhammer rights but they failed to do so.
>>
>>98589809
Yes. There's an urban legend that Warcraft started being developed with the aim of pitching it to GW as a licensed Warhammer Fantasy game before GW denied it, then Blizzard just went ahead and finished the game as Not-Warhammer anyways. Story gets confused a lot with Starcraft instead, which makes no sense since they'd already established their own knock-off successful IP so there'd have been no reason to go back and ask GW to let them license 40k instead of just doing a knock-off again.

I've been out of the loop recently. Where's all of this nonsense theorycrafting about Dorn coming back as a Black Templar coming from?

Guard? Raven Guard?

Raven? You're telling me they're giving the Stormraven to Guard? That's why they squatted it?

I love that the Emperor was fine with the SW having powerful psykers, they truly were his favorite sons.

>PEngines and 2 Castigators
I'm trying to have unit variety, so 2 castigators seems like a lot. However SoB are going to be a while until I finish them so I'll see how things play out with the other armies.
>>
>>98589887
I've played 1k points SoB only into Marines, and it didn't go well with less than 2 so that's why I say it.
If you're not fighting SM (you're not), you can probably get away with 1.
>>
>>98588549
why not strip, fill the gaps with sprueglue and repaint it?
You can also gapfill with PVA and then paint on it when it's dried
>>
>>98589899
>If you're not fighting SM (you're not)
Uh... that's the fourth faction. Sounds like 2 Castigators are a must
>>
>>98589925
Marines are very much "not fun" for Sisters to fight right now
Hopefully the codex fixes that, but until then we have to make do with skew lists and gambling.

I too want Imperium Lite. I also believe in the Imperiialziation of all existence, not just chaos.
>>
i get unhappy when a faction in 40k isn't the most boring and dull imperium rip off design and i want if there's a whole new faction with more stcs and shit then it shouldn't look like van saar or anything but more imperium and not even marines but ig

If you used superglue just throw it in the freezer for a bit and then force it off by hand. Either way it should be easy enough to separate unless you glued the fuck out of it.
>>
>>98589688
My megatrakk scrapjets and lootas back in the codex where they belong.
>>
>>98589718
As a Votann player, the LoV have been overrepresented with battleforce boxes for awhile. Would rather Aeldari get the spot so I have something to buy my brother for Christmas.
