Are you guys jazzed up for D&D WoW?

Bitter betty alert
>>
>>98587605
I am actually. I thought this was going to be a shitty cash-grab, and it is, but it comes with all of WoW's classes and subclasses, which is huge.

The biggest gripe I have with 5e is that everything after Core is so hyper-specific to some Forgotten Realms gobbly-gook, it's too difficult to actually roleplay your subclass correctly. You try and make a character through basic 5.5 options, and end up with the half-breed dimensional train rider who's soul is locked in the Weave and are thr hidden paragon of Elistrae or some shit.

WoW's lore is much more generic, and easier to slot into your own campaign. I'd much rather play a Holy Priest of the Light, than a Trickery Domain Cleric of the Purple Dragon Knights.

Yeah, to 4th edition!

I'm not sure what it even is. Is it just new classes and species based on Wow?

Fuck off. Explore something new
>>
>>98588765
Classes, species, items, dungeans, an ice crown citadel adventure module, a setting guide, professions and probably a dozen other things. It seems they are packing quite a lot into these things
>>
>>98587605
I haven't been "jazzed" up for D&D since 4E came out

I'll probably use it as a reference for my tables, but I doubt it will be very good given it's based on 5e.

I can't wait to read this, think it's pretty cool, then never play it even once, like all my TTRPG books.

WoW literally can't move past them because the people currently in charge of Warcraft are garbage that can't make anything interesting.
>>
>>98591599
That being said I can foresee this being very undercooked
>>
>>98590339
Interestingly very similar to what happened to Star Wars EU. Declare it noncanon, then just pillage content from it arbitrarily.
That said the warcraft/WoW RPG (campaign setting) should have been more distinct mechanically from DnD. It was treated like a kitchen sink that can receive stuff from other settings and vica versa. They said as much in one of the splats when addressing the question of why not mana instead of spell slots.

>I thought this was going to be a shitty cash-grab, and it is, but it comes with all of WoW's classes and subclasses, which is huge.
Reminder that "Shaman" is actually a Barbarian reskin.
>>
>>98591961
I am actually in a WoW-based campaign right now, and the only class that comes close to mimicing Shaman is actually cleric, specifically Storm Cleric using the 2014 rules. Because if I went with 2024, the only class that is apparently able to use lightning based spells is Wizard.

Hence my excitement for this splatbook, 5e's classes are just FUBAR for anything that isn't Baldur's Gate.
>>
>>98587605
Yes, but because it's an admission of desperation from two companies I dislike, not because I'm a WoWfag or a D&Drone. It'll also make for good low effort trolling.

>>98587605
No. I tried wow a long time ago but never got into it.
I did get into the wc3 but that’s it.
I sometimes regret getting into dnd 5e as my first ttrpg. But that was what my friends years ago were into and I followed suit.
>>
>>98592082

5e's not a bad start as long as you branch out into things that aren't 5e based. The big problem with "leaving" 5e is just that people want to bring their' 5e habits with them.

what i find odd when reading about peoples ideas on campaigns set in Azeroth is that usually it always revolves around recreating the storyline of some particular quest chain (like Onyxia or the Defias) or the main campaign of some expanion (like Wrath).

But pretty much never its something entirely original like "i wanna do a campaign about some ancient highborne city in desolace where the mages meddled with ill-understood black empire relics, and nowadays its divided between the shadow council, the centraurs, the Venture Co., the twilight hammer and agents of Horde and Alliance". or something like that

How comes?
>>
>>98592208
Most of what WoW has going for it as a setting is nostalgia.
>>
>>98592154
The funnier part is that anecdotally people who stick to 5e don’t even play 5e as intended, they usually play some homebrewed variant to make it easier on them or they outright don’t retain information on how the game is played and substitute their own workaround mechanics and misunderstandings into that. They’re not bringing bad 5e habits with them, they’re bringing bad habits with them in general and blame any deviations on not playing a version of 5e that wasn’t officially suppliers to begin with.
>>
>>98592488

Yeah, but that ship sailed on day one and then sank entirely when they let Jeremy Crawford start issuing "official" rulings.

It'd be unironically great if there was a huge 5e RAW community out there, but there's not, so we deal with the 5e community we actually have.
>>
>>98592500
As an outsider, i say you guys shouldn’t settle for so little, but it sounds like you’re outnumbered ten thousand to one on that.
>>
>>98592517

Oh, I left years ago. It doesn't matter how good the base engine is if the company isn't going to publish materials that actually support it and the fan base isn't going to actually play it.

These days I'm mostly playing Chainmail+3LBB, but my setting is inspired by a setting that was inspired by WoW so the product has my attention even if my hopes aren't up.
>>
My main question is this, and this will be the sole determinant of whether WoW D&D 5.5 is good or bad:

Are there niggers in the artwork?

That’s it. That’s the only question worth investigating on this matter. Here’s how it plays out:

>Has niggers: shit’s gonna suck
>Doesn’t have niggers: shit’s gonna be good to great
>>
>>98592701
>Are there niggers in the artwork?
you should ask them that in person at blizzcon
>>
>>98591657
Another anon, but at least Warcraft/WoW d20 had some cool stuff to use with D&D. Far better gnome than the 3e one. Also later there was the possibility of using Unearthed Arcana spell point rules with it, if you wanted.

woah, it's double slop!
also it's pathetic how WoW's writers did all they could in Shadowlands to literally erase Arthas, because it annoyed them how effortlessly he remains the most iconic character of the series as they can't come up with a cooler villain, but ultimately they gave up and use him in cover art anyway. It's like an admission of failure.

>>98587605
One of the most pretentious things about 5e- especially the middle of 5.0- was the idea that there was this "fifth edition design precepts" thing, based on discussions from the chatty designers and their endless twitter bullshit.

This is why you were a bad homebrewer if you made a new weapon, or added abilities or properties to weapons, or made a race with a minus to a stat or a racial minimum or maximum, or if you made a set of rules that subtracted something from a class as well as adding (adding was ok but only as a subclass).

5.5 broke the weapon hymen- weapon masteries mostly aren't amazing, but at least the template is definitely well within what passes for 5.5 design philosophy.

And this book is gonna totally destroy, with no survivors, the idea that you can't subtract stuff from a class.

The "how to build a death knight" is gonna say that you're a hero class so you start at level 3, and you're a paladin but you DON'T get this and that and INSTEAD you get this other thing.

Same thing with Demon Hunter: he's a ranger, but he's not gonna have cure fucking wounds or beast and fey spells.

This WoW book isn't gonna be amazing, but it will be at least pretty cool, and it will be neat reading for any DM that wants to adapt something, because it will have a bunch of neat templates about how to do that.

I don't even run 5.5 and I want to see what's in this book.
>>
>>98591961
>>98592068
No, "Shaman" isn't a barbarian reskin, "Enhancement Shaman" is a subclass for barbarian. That means it will have shaman specific mechanics from the subclass, and not be a reskin of any existing barbarian.

Do you think "Elemental Shaman" and "Restoration Shaman" will be barbarians at all?
>>
>>98587605
totally...
>>
>>98588406

>>
>>98588406
>it comes with all of WoW's classes and subclasses

This literally just means they've added like 4 subclasses and the rest they go "Oh just use x class/subclass for this wow class/spec." They didn't even bring Shamans back as a proper D&D class.
>>
>>98588406

>>98592068
Anon. Just play a Good edition.
>>
>>98592500
>It'd be unironically great if there was a huge 5e RAW community out there
5e RAW doesn't have rules for stealth and concealment.
>>
>>98587605
I've not looked into it yet, but I've already heavily based (basically copied) one of my home campaigns on the human / onyxia storyline that ran from level 1 to the onyxia raid. It was pretty great.

That said I mostly just like to strip off settings and steal mechanics with my own setting sauce anyway.
>>
This made me buckle, lots of players in my group are interested, even ones that didn't play anything warcraft related (but one is a big starcraft fan, go figure, he's usually more for fantasy than sci fi), so I guess I'm getting some cheap core books when I find them and then the module or whatever it is called.
>>98588800
Yeah, on paper it sounds much better than the simple reskins we got in past editions.
>>98592208
Honestly the setting has so many interesting timeframes and places that you can do basically whatever you want. I can see most making the first few adventures all about nods to the game, then people will try and remake all dungeons. Most people still playing will start applying some creativity after that. And honestly, there's much to be done already if you use the existing questlines as a frame and have the players work alongside that in parallel. Several questlines made it clear that there's other people around the world doing stuff.
>>98604404
This, it adds a framework for doing things differently. For example, if I hear it right mana potions will restore spell slots depending on their craftmanship level, that can change encounters and the way you balance them during the day, on top of actually encouraging players to engage with content that is not just combat, because juicy recipes are going to be locked behind faction rep. That means they actually have to look at a map and think where they want to go and what to do. Potential is huge.

If they add new classes and monsters to play then it'd be pretty cool, and since they're financially backed by the two biggest cats in generic fantasy slop I'd say that's a pretty good-
>Six New Subclasses and Thirteen Class Skins
>Using the Player's Handbook as a foundation, D&D: World of Warcraft® provides rules for playing all 13 World of Warcraft classes, with alterations, new options, and guidance on bringing each class and its specializations to life in D&D.
>The book adds 6 new subclasses: the Oath of the Ebon Blade and Oath of the Holy Paladin, the Demon Hunter Ranger, ...
>Rounding out the roster are 3 updated subclasses (Swashbuckler Rogue, ...

>>
>>98587605
I'm sure WoW fans are because it is a thing made for them and not for people who don't give a fuck about WoW. Like if I go to mcdonalds and they've got a deal for collectible cups for some movie that came out, and I don't fucking care about the movie, then I'm not buying the fucking cup. It doesn't in any way matter to me.

95% of 'serious' art criticism is absolute bullshit and this was true 30 years ago before any modern Woke. But there can occasionally be something to it, such as 'the old, crude B&W D&D art can be more evocative since showing less detail leaves more to the imagination'.

But WTF is this cartoony, giant weapons, giant pauldrons (the single biggest defining feature of the style, pastel colors with an emphasis on purple?? I seriously think WOTC thinks even 2e or 3e art, let alone 1e art, is right-wing coded or something. I don't just mean because it's associated with older editions. I mean *any* realistic style would be too scary or upsetting for the Portland Trans Black ideal customer, too evocative of IRL colonialism.

>>
>>98620357
Ah yes, no doubt, but the thing is, there's people that could just not waste their money on shit, but they don't have the impulse control, even if they would be smart enough to know it's better not to. Not talking about books to read, RPGs to play or models to paint here, we're all here because we like to do that. I'm talking about stuff like you have a house, you buy a bookshelf. You don't read, but don't want to see it empty. So you go and buy books. That you won't read. Just for show.
There's people collecting all kinds of stuff, and you can't say they like them for the art. Getting a vase or a sculpture? Ok. Gettingo funkos? What the fuck dude? Old games inside their box that you played (or most probably didn't) as a kid? They don't even work anyway. Old toys that weren't worth a damn, now you pay them a week's salary to have them collect dust, or be shut in a box? Or a 700 bucks watch to trek in the mountains once or twice per year. Then they blame the economy.

File: Desolace.png (186 KB, 674x375)

I dont get why so many people dislike Desolace. The place has a awesome moody vibe to it. Ancient ruins, grey wastes, naga on the coast, satyrs in the woods, demon cults and centaur tribes, a hidden megaduneon, animal graveyards. What is not to love about this place?

Anyways, what kind of plot hook would you put into a Desolace adventure? (classic, cata or later version is irrelevant, everything goes)
>>
>>98620579
Depends on party composition mostly, but going around exploring ruins is always cool, so they'd probably end up in the demon occupied areas with centaurs running around as possible random encounters. You can always have some warlock or mage sending parties to find artifacts and then go from there depending on where they want to go next or who they interacted with before. At that level you already had quests that made you go from one place to the other side of the world so you can have paladins in stormwind wanting to get something back or some troll in stranglethorn needing fel ingredients for something. Area levels are not set in stone at the table so you can literally do whatever.

I don't usually plan plot lines in any detail if I'm not sure the party is interested or the game is gonna move in that direction because PCs can focus on any random piece they find and then want to move in an entirely unexpected direction because of a one off NPC that now somehow is a recurring character.

>>
>>98621578
I don't even know much about Warcraft/WoW, but I liked a lot of the additions. The monster books had a TON of stuff from the games, so you could pick what you like (a fair share of plant monsters, though some are just variations of the same basic ones, I guess). I like the quilboars (?) as a new humanoid mob race, from what I recall, too. There's a bunch of PC races, from what I recall it included worgen and tauren, I personally liked the more proper gnomes with tinkering bonuses (instead of that weird basic D&D 3e thing), and half-ogres without level adjustment from the Horde book. There's a bunch of nice new feats from game mechanics, even shout feats that I think were an orc only thing? General rules for building cities with specific types of buildings based on size. Lots of alchemical potions with accompanying rules for your character to be able to make them (on one of the Magic and Mayhem books). Stuff with gunpowder and inventions, if you're into that. Hot half-deer dryads.

I dunno about character creation combos or lore, but I just thought it had lots of fun stuff.

Any idea about how affliction warlocks will even work? Until WotC slaughters the grandfather-clause sacred cow that is multiclassing (they won't), features cannot be given to a class at level 1.
>>
>>98624868
I see little reason to multiclass beyond wanting to play a specific character concept, because honestly the class bonuses at higher levels look like they make it worth it to commit, but honestly I just skimmed the player book a couple of times when it was at hand, so I never looked much into it. It does look like builds were more interesting in 3.5, but you had a ton of trap options there.

>Why can't Warcraft be about War anymore?
The last time Warcraft was about faction conflicts we got BFA.
>>
>>98625997

No, no, no! That doesn't count because it isn't war with the other faction they teamed up with nearly a dozen times to go fight something bigger! It literally only counts as war if its between the horde and alliance.

Stories do have wars but I'm mostly talking about the game itself never shifted back to actually strategy and warfare. What was the last Warcraft related product that focused of building an army rather then playing an adventurer?
>>
>>98626088
Ah, that? Do you really want a warcraft 4 by new blizzard? They even managed to fuck the remaster up. SC2 ended up mixed at best depending on who you ask to or about what side of it, and I say that as someone that actually liked its gameplay.
I do wish there was something to play SC in a TTRPG though.

RTS' don't sell as well they did twenty years ago and not much looks like changing in that regard.

Well, it's not Warcraft but...
>>
>>98626680
Man, the starcraft minis did appeal to me, but I couldn't be swayed to quite get in to it for its price, but give me a warcraft miniature game and I'll be the consumerist sucker.
I guess with a TTRPG and, if it happens, a miniature wargame, you get to do better writing then whatever the fuck is currently happening
>>
>>98630566

A Warcraft skirmish game would be pretty great. Something similar in size/scale to Kill Team/War Cry or maybe a bit bigger would probably be fun.

I know there are people with lots of STLs for warcraft stuff, and I'm sure you could find a rule set to make it work, but unfortunately it can be tricky to get people into a game if it doesn't have a fuckin official stamp of approval on it.
>>
>>98587605
I think they fucked themselves by using 5.5. I think them waiting for 6e to push this would been better and most likely pushed everyone to leave 5e for 6e. Especially if 6e could fix enough of 5e problems that got worse or were left alone in 5.5.
>>
I'm looking forward to all other TTRPGs being replaced by D&D Universes Beyond.
>Why would I want to play Star Wars Saga or D6? We should play D&D Star Wars instead!

Half the online discourse on RPGs is:
>"I want to run a game about the build-up of ennui in the human spirit over the course of a lifetime when exposed to the damaging effects of a society rife with corruption, except it also takes place in a school where the kids are taught how to care for their magical stuffed toy that sings to defeat yokai (that means Japanese demon) that threaten to mess up their homework. Which system would be best suited for this? My group is familiar with DND5e and Pathfinder no e specified."
It's fine. It's not your job, or anyone's, to convince these people to broaden their horizons. In the future they'll just say "Which Beyond is best suited for this?" and that'll be that. Containment zones are good for the hobby.

There isn’t a new shaman class. They announced all the new material in this book already, with no new classes to be found. Demon hunter is a ranger subclass, for crying out loud.

The book is also confirmed to contain two barbarian subclasses, one themed around the elements and one themed around ancestral spirits.

>>
>>98635876
You say that like it hasn't happened in the past already, there was a d20 or D&D variant or D&D-inspired system for anything, including warcraft, star wars and scifi stuff. M&M itself is just reskinned and modded D&D.
It's not a current era problem at all.
>>
>>98636247
It honestly makes it even funnier in retrospect that they tried to gut the OGL, given that the existence of it was what encouraged the market dominance of WotC's d20 system back in the old days. And here they are trying to reinvent that very same wheel.
>>
>>98636247
It's possible that anon had that in mind. My party played both Call of Cthulhu and Star Wars d20 (I THINK Cthulhu might have even been published by WotC?).
A bunch of original stuff even rode the d20 wave and eventually got a new edition with their own proper system.
>>
>>98588499
This but unironically, 4e is the best D&D has ever been. Most balanced edition, best martials ever put tp a rulebook within D&D as a system, and you fags hate it because it wasn't lazy half-assed broken dogshit like 3.X or 5.X or barely playable slop like TSR.

>>98587605
No, because I don't care about WoW.
>>
>>98619798
>seems this is the thing these days for DnD
It's been a thing since at least 3.X with D20 system which is just 3.X with the numbers filed off.
>>
>>98635876
>Sagas
That's just D&D 3.5 but star wars. Same shit except somehow worse because it's 3.X. D6 is also kind of a hot mess even if it is my preferred star wars TTRPG. THere's already a fan-made Star Wars 5e out there too by the way, it actually improves upon 5e/5.5 in a lot of ways.
>M&M
It IS dumb, it's just 3.X with superpowers at the end of the day. At least play a good supers RPG like Prowlers & Paragons.
>CoC
Funny you bring this part up because they did just re-canonize Cthulhu in 5.5's Ravenloft book. That said, CoC is a clunky mess of a thing, but it sort of is one of the better systems to do that sort of horror or mystery-focused game in where the players are intended to be less powerful.

Anyway, that's not what's going to happen unless you're a friendless loser who has to play with other friendless losers. I have lots of friends that I play with, so I can run or play whatever the fuck I want.
>>
>>98636075
>Le containment
I sincerely hope that retards infest whatever system you love and you're forced to watch as people you dislike enjoy something you do and make it more to their taste. You deserve it for being such a pretentious cunt who relies on corpos to run/play games.
>>
>>98637322
You're not the first one praising 4e and I unironically would get the books to try it out if it wasn't for the fact that my group is made up of D&D purists that are either nostalgic towards 3.5/pathfinder or started out recently so it's 5/5.5. I struggle to get three players for alternative systems, it took me years to get five players for L5R, but I could just say "D&D" and I would get six or seven weekly right away. And they still swear they're not interested in 4e, even if they never tried it.

If Starcraft is successful across its current 10 year plan, they'll make a Warcraft tabletop wargame. Then a Diablo dungeon-crawler game that's primarily PVE. Then an Overwatch skirmish game.
And then once all four of those are out they'll make a Heroes of the Storm skirmish game letting you mash all of them together.
I miss HOTS.

Yes, I know the lights are technically still on but no one plays anything but the shitty ARAM mode. It's a dead game.

>>
>>98626680

>>
>>98638461
>Could have tried opening up with Rokugan d20
That would have defeated the point of playing a new game in the first place, I was completely burned out on D&D and am just now in the process of looking into it again. That said, adventures in rokugan is kinda redundant since we have L5R already, but sometimes I do wonder about oriental adventures and their editions.

I'm sort of tempted to have them play L5R and find a portal of some kind, or end up in a dream, and they isekai to exalted/ a D&D world or something, maybe for a one shot.

There's a fair number of new characters by what I gather, if anything it's good that they kept some old chars around instead of killing them all or completely sideline them, that would have been seen as an attempt to just overwrite the old roots. The sad thing is that the new ones didn't get as memorable, because of writing mostly, I suppose, but also because in a RTS you can follow the story of these characters and live through it along with them, in an MMO the more you try to shoehorn important characters into the plot the more you sideline the PCs, and it feels like you're just there watching someone else's story like they are some DMPC.
>>
>>98640281
Exactly. WotC published the Oriental Adventures book with Rokugan licensed at first, but afterwards the L5R publisher printed a ton of books with rules for both d20 system and the L5R edition at the time.

My idea for a campaign was going to be that magic portals dump the PCs and a bunch of other WoW-dimension dudes/monsters into my world and they spend the campaign trying to get back home, all the while seeing how evil from their world leaked through too.
Is it proper to leave that to this unfamiliar place to deal with or should they clean up that mess before they leave?
Will they note how the bad guys are using this new place as a staging ground to safely prepare for an assault back to Azeroth since this new land is unfamiliar with them, giving them the perfect place to grow in secret. Do they want to be the ones crying the sky is falling and point accusations at the new, funny looking elves who keep supplying the mage's guild with a crazy new way to amp up their spells or curing disease with a regularity that far outpaces the local clerics?
Strangers in a strange land with a slim hope of returning home, dodging old enemies, trying to make sense of it all.

Been out of the loop since I stopped playing wow during cataclysm, but one could argue that themes like noble savage orcs and racist evil humans, or the whole "it's not his fault he just got corrupted" started with WC3 anyway.
Not denying that nu-blizzard is completely different from the old, but things like these seem almost like following an already established path rather than a sudden turn.

SC2 had different themes compared to 1 but the lead writer did say he was a different person, which can be understandable, even if it doesn't justify the changes wholly, and diablo 4 looks more grimdark than 3 (and 3 was dark enough in a lot of stuff excluding the color palette).

tl;dr I think blizzard is more complicated than most other cases.

Though with Warlords, they did take it back to the Noble Savage thing and even had some of them just be violent assholes even without the demon corruption. Like Kargath, Blackhand, Killrog, and Grom, all leaned heavily into the savage aspect. Durotan got more of the "noble" thing, but he's the protagonist for Horde players.
I particularly liked Gul'dan. Just plain evil for the sake of it and loving every second of it. Fucking smug bastard.
