So I decided they still go through an aquatic larval stage, but it happens inside the womb, with the offspring undergoing metamorphosis before birth. Later, when I started to consider the implications I realized that if there isn't an umbilical cord for transfer of oxygen and removal of waste products, there'd need to be a larger volume of amniotic fluid to act as a buffer so the concentration of oxygen and waste products like ammonia stay within acceptable values at all times (think of maintaining proper water chemistry in a fish tank where you can only filter and oxygenate a specific volume of water per minute). So the increased volume of amniotic fluid required makes the species look the equivalent of a human pregnant with multiple babies even though they're pregnant with only one.
