Where does the idea of elves being more prone to hubris and arrogance come from? Is it Tolkien? Funny how it extends into all the fantasy settings we play in.

>>98595556In my setting elves are a bit self centred and garishly dressed (which they consider peak elegance) but ultimately good, noble people. Tolkien referred to the Mirkwood elves as being knowledgeable but not necessarily wise.
Mirkwood elves are the only party who is there just out of pure greed. Everyone else: dwarves, goblins/orc, humans have rightful reasons to fight. Ironically, the goblins/orcs are not even there for greed, they are here for revenge. The elves are only in it to loot the place.

Even if they are rare exceptions and not the norm, it's not unusual for the exception to become more common than the norm when the work is extremely influential. Just like drow are supposed to be evil, but there's a huge number of non-evil drow defectors because the most well-known drow character was a good guy who rejected his people's evil ways.But to address the original question, I don't think Tolkien is the origin as arrogant elves predate him and trace back to ancient mythology.

the idea of mentally/physically superior human-like beings having pride/hubris as their greatest sin is literally thousands of years old. In Islam, the reason their equivalent to Satan, Iblis, was cast out from Heaven and became a fallen angel is because when God introduced the first human Adam to him, he refused to kneel to a "lesser being" which of course offended God who had crafted man in his own image.
