The High Council of the Grand Arcanum had maintained a single, unyielding rule for four centuries: magic was a man’s mantle. Women were forbidden from entering the guild’s brass gates. The Arch-Mages argued that the feminine constitution lacked the rigid discipline required to tether raw ether.

In reality, the rule survived only because the wizards never talked to one another about their families, which was seen as a taboo breach of privacy.

The cracks in the foundation began with High Evoker Benedict. He was a man of immense gravity, famous for his treatises on pyro-kinetic geometry, descended from the lost Dwarven race of old. He was also a man of immense pride. When his granddaughter, Lyra, was born, Benedict spent an afternoon staring into her cradle. He looked at her perfectly shaped hands and brilliant blue eyes, and thought to himself: “A child of my bloodline could never be ordinary.”.

By her seventh birthday, Benedict was secretly teaching her the forbidden formulation of blue fire in his private cellar, a form of magic some saw as deviant. He convinced himself that this was fine. The rule was meant to keep average girls out. Lyra was his granddaughter, of his blood caliber, so obviously she was smarter, different, and uniquely qualified to wield the blue flame.

A mile away, Grand Conjurer Thaddeus was doing the exact same thing with his daughter, Cynthia. Thaddeus knew the council's laws by heart, but he also held pride in his own genetic superiority (in truth, all wizards did). He could not conceive of a world where a child possessing his brilliant mind would be incapable of summoning storm-sprites of the Storm Spires. He taught her the incantations in his foggy orchard under the guise of mundane botany lessons. "You are a Thaddeus," he whispered to her. "The guild's rules apply to commoners, not to perfection."

For fifteen years, a silent epidemic of pride swept through the elder wizards. Every master and elder master of the Arcanum looked at their daughters and granddaughters, saw a reflection of their own genius, and quietly broke the law.

They all harboured the identical, arrogant belief: “Everyone else's daughters are a liability, but mine is an exception.”.
