He was also a man of immense pride. When his granddaughter, Lyra, was born, Benedict spent an afternoon staring into her cradle. He taught her the incantations in his foggy orchard under the guise of mundane botany lessons. "You are a Thaddeus," he whispered to her. "The guild's rules apply to commoners, not to perfection."For fifteen years, a silent epidemic of pride swept through the elder wizards.
