been watching 2nd edition 40k youtube channels as someone who has only been into 40k for the past ten years (I am an 8th ed baby, yes, you may laugh). My only conclusion is that the world and community have been robbed of a superior gaming experience since October 1998, never to be seen again, now limited to greybeards who have old 2nd edition armies and books. This is like if CGL made Battletech Alpha Strike the only way to play Battletech whatsoever unless you encountered a greybeard with the classic ruleset. This is bullshit! How the fuck does James get away with this shit? It's like being woken up from the fucking matrix!

YOU CAN STILL RETVRN

REJECT MODERNITY

EMBRACE TRADITION

THE OLD WAYS ARE IMMORTAL AS LONG AS THEY ARE REMEMBERED

THE INHERITANCE YOU ARE OWED IS WAITING FOR YOU

2nd is fantastic but only for small games and with some homebrewing and FAQ. The system really breaks down if you have more than a platoon of guys and 1-2 vehicles. It's very breakable with skew lists too.

3rd oversimplified things but by the end of 3rd/beginning of 4th with all of the additional material that had been added it was the peak.
>>
>>98602549
That was my conclusion in 1999 when I was 11 after receiving a bunch of 2nd edition stuff from a friend of my brother. We've been robbed for decades.
Not that there's not a whole list of problems with 2nd edition.
>>
>>98602549
Congratulations, you now know the truth. Now suffer watching the masses flagellate themselves and refuse to accept that literally anything is better than modern 40k.

4e with early & 3e Codices is more my speed but 2e battle reports are undistilled comfy kino

I once had a guy give me a long lecture about how GW has "continually improved" their game design with each successive edition, leading to his belief that 9th edition 40k was the peak of wargaming design in the industry, and that 10th edition would surely follow suit (this was in like, 2022) and so on and so forth when I said I'd like to try 4th edition 40k. Any and all criticism of modern 40k or even just 9th compared to 8th was answered with a simple "well no game is perfect." I thought he was the outlier, but ever since 10th ed released I've become more and more convinced that this is the norm and that players who don't believe this are outliers

pig eating slop: mmmmm this is the pinnacle of cuisine, surely tomorrow's slop will be even better even if they add human shit to it!

I started with 2nd and tried so hard to like 3rd when it came out but its just not the same game. 2nd had so much character, no edition I've tried since has anything in common with it. Plus 2nd edition is the only edition where space marines feel like space marines, super versatile and tough but easily outnumbered.

If you can persuade your friends to give it a go between pdfs of the old books, the Battle Bible and 2ed1993 dot com you can get the rules. It'll probably a slog learning from scratch but it's very rewarding.
>>
>>98602549
2nd is one of the easiest editions to find PDFs for, so you're not limited by lack of books. Unless you can find a recaster, stls and a 3d printer, or find an army on eBay, you're out of luck with models. Though you could always just use cardboard cutouts if your heart is pure enough.

ngl I don't really get how you'd want to play more than a platoon+2vehicles in 40k game. sounds like gonna shit anyway in 28mm

Because it's nice to be able to take a *couple* of extras - an additional character, mechanise a squad, maybe a 5-man elite unit etc - without the game falling apart. The whole reason "early 4th" is considered a golden age of peak is that it's the bowl of porridge that's Just Right: not too small, not too big; not too complex, not too simple; characters matter, but they don't dominate; wargear exists and is meaningful, but you can't accidentally fuck the whole game for your opponent or autodelete their favourite unit with virus bombs and vortex grenades.

1500pt late 3rd/early 4th 40K on a 6x4' table with 25-30% terrain coverage is, unironically, the best version of the game GW have ever produced if you actually want to play games rather than just write a blog about the games you're totes gonna play one day when you can find the seven other grogs in the world who share your precise preferences on how 2nd or RT should be played.

I started in 2nd, it has its charms and its flaws like every "classic" edition, but the rose coloured glasses a lot of people wear when talking about it are inches thick.
>>
>>98604769
what about the 2nd ed battle reports on YouTube that seem to indicate otherwise
>>
>>98604769
NTA, but I think there's a vast difference between a game that's fun to play against friends a couple of times when you're all beginners and a game you actually try to get good at and play regularly. 2nd ed seems like a fun once a year with friends and beer game, but less so for a weekly game night. But crucially, which of those two types of fun a person means when they say an edition is fun can vary.

>. My only conclusion is that the world and community have been robbed of a superior gaming experience since October 1998, never to be seen again,

enjoy getting tabled turn one by fucking purestrain genestealers over and over

hope you like seeing every senior officer in the Space Wolves, Blood Angels, Ultramarines and Dark Angels show up every game

did you know skimmers can pop-up attack and you can't do SHIT about it because they're vehicles and vehicles are nearly impossible to kill anyway? good job the only skimmers in the game are just equipped with shuriken shrieker cannons and sniper multimeltas

hey do you enjoy getting 80 gretchin ready to dice spam murder those pesky 300 point terminator squads that teleport in to fuck you with sustained fire? here's virus grenade! oops, all corpses!

see that rhino? it's a killing machine you can't do anything about before it dumps a squad of murderboys down right where you don't want them but if you did, another murderboy would crawl out and start wrecking up the place, but look, see that battlewagon? you have to balance the models on it or they're not embarked haha quirky

you ever meet a land raider you didn't like? yeah? must have been somebody else's land raider

did it have holo-fields because it was a fucking stolen land raider that harlequins used all of last edition and they won't give up because they think having two dedicated melee squads with pre-fight bonuses that can squad wipe you is a step down? are you facing six phoenix lords a solitaire eldrad ulthran the avatar and a bunch of rocket bastards with a death jester next to them every game while wicked ghosts assault your senses and set you on fire? no? then you're not playing 2E
>>
>>98605332
the key here is to not be a fucking asshole with your list. same shit that applies to battletech which has suited that community fine for decades.
>>
>>98605332
>are you facing six phoenix lords a solitaire eldrad ulthran the avatar and a bunch of rocket bastards with a death jester next to them every game while wicked ghosts assault your senses and set you on fire?
I want this to come back to modern 40k. This sounds great.

That also applies to 4th, and 6th, hell even index 8th works fine.

Half the editions work just fine if you don't play with assholes, problem is that the community is filled with assholes.
>>
>>98605332
I tried to like "3.5" 40k as you say, but the codices are all over the place.
Marine subfaction rules are nonsense, and orks basic units are too rigid, for example. It requires homebrewing anyway, which defeats the point por me of playing an universally agreed ruleset.
>>
>>98605416
>Half the editions work just fine

are you including the ones post-2017 where vehicles work like giant infantry models?
>>
>>98602549
You're watching old dudes wax nostalgic about the past and taking everything they say at face value. Or you're lying to try to impress retro hipsters here. Both options are pretty pathetic.
>>
>>98604046
I would slightly disagree on one point about marines; despite disliking the change to cover saves in general, I did become fond of the result that marines could then stand in the open with utter contempt and disregard for enemy small arms fire. Felt appropriate for terror troops.
>>
>>98605390
I don't think you understand the ethos of 2E

>>98605395
the only good thing about it is that the games don't take all night
>>
>>98606145
Elaborate on the ethos
>>
>>98605332
There's not a single warhammer edition, or almost any game with listbuilding at that, that you can't build horrible unfun skew lists in. It comes free with the listbuilder.
>>
>>98606871
there was no ethos because the game was retarded
2e had strategy cards that let you remove units before the game even started, shit was so silly and the games took forever
>>
>>98604267
Why on earth would you need old models?
>>
>>98605332
>I need someone to tell me not to be a tard
I can see why it's not for you
>>
>>98604769
Patronising untrue bullshit
Making it a real wargame sucked the kino out
The whacky rpg elements and wargear ruled
