>ask players for character art>they all post AI slopwhy are playoids like this
Like it or not, (and I don't) AI-slop is serviceable and easy. If you really have a problem with it, buy art commissions for your player's characters, like I do.
>OP's post is made by a real artist and the character depicted is Leon BelmontThat piece in particular was used as his portrait in the Castlevania show.
>>98604047>GMoid wants playoids to commission decent art of their specific character on their dimeYou should abuse your GMoid powers to make your players give you money so you can commsion player art yourself, if you want to be a cheapskate. Otherwise accept that playoids are going for the cheapest option to get decent art of their characteroids, especially if they can't a free one on the internent in 1 minute, if their playoid attention span even lasts that long.
>pick some existing art might fit, but diverges in points A, B or C, or might not exist if your idea is too unusual>commission artcosts money, might not be worth for a character you may not play for the long term>draw it yourselfyou might not be able to do it>slop iteasy, quick, gives you exactly what you envision

>>98606181You're right, taking the time to think about which Lord of the Rings character you want a frame of, which movie(s) they appear in, and which scene is going to produce the best shot takes a lot more mental effort than kowtowing to the cognitive surrender machine.
>>98606155Which is fine for a basic bitch campaign that's not going to last 4 months.
>>98604174>pick some existing art>might fit,My biggest grievance here is that it is already supposed to be something, somebody else's 'character' that might have a history you aren't aware of.
>>98606188No, skimming through a film on fast forward and randomly picking a shot of a character that vaguely looks like the one you're playing doesn't take more effort than describing your character to a beep boop, but for what it's worth it's only slightly lazier.

Before AI art became this fearsome challenge to the artists' identity, it was a mainstream point of argument among artists that doing art was skilled work. Against the idea that artists were just "born with it", many took much pain to explain that all art forms involve a lot of specialized training, that you get good at drawing not through natural luck but through hard work. This reaction responded to an anxiety about being seen as a legitimate field of industry, to be on an equal basis as specialized workers such as engineers, doctors, etc. - and deserve the same compensation.Since AI art came in to displace artists, the tune has suddenly completely reversed. Art is now an inherent capacity of the soul, and anyone can do it. Why use these AI image generators when "anyone can pick up a pencil and draw"? Doesn't even a bad drawing "have more Soul and Meaning" than a result generated from the recombination of other art pieces? Suddenly the notion of arts as a skill with technical components flies out of the window. Both attitudes reflect anxieties about seeing your work respected as such, while also refusing the industrial implications of art being a form of work, and subject to the same market forces as all other fields. This is an attempt to have your cake and eat it too.
Things that get pastiched through AI have already been sucked dry vampire-like. They are already ubiquitous and lifeless, you don't need to come to their defense. If something has enough cultural weight to be parodied or imitated, whether by AI, nerdy t-shirt sellers or fanartists, that usually means that this particular cultural phenomenon has escaped the category of "artist's work" and entered the domain of mass marketed meme or brand. I believe this to be equally true of fashion house logos that get bootlegged, marvel slop, and more beloved examples like the "classic ghibli style". My more personal and less marxist take on this is: pastiche of household "art styles" is fundamentally tacky whether it's done by an AI program or a "real human artist", and fandom is a disease.
>>98607144>>98607191Cool beans bro. Still looks like shit, and im still not allowing it as character art on my tables. Doodle something or find a reference like god intended

I find it amusing that many times people can't actually distinguish stuff made by AI, like poetry, and actually even prefers AI-written poetry to the real deal. Also, people often misidentify poetry written by a human being as if it is was written by an AI.
>>98604047>asking players for character artthere are dms who actually do this?
>>98606845>even your own wording sort of admitsHis wording does not admit this in the slightest, you illiterate retard.
>>98607144Well, basically Art having soul is something of a narrative born around the time of the Romantic movement, although it sort-off already existed in the 15th century and beforehand. The idea of the artist as an untouchable, tortured vessel for the human soul really did get its modern superpowers during the Romantic movement (late 18th to mid-19th century). This is why people didn't really praise Shakespeare as this massive artist, or are there any bios in his time. He was a playwright. Look at the word wright. He was a skilled craftsman of letters, not the modern conception of the tortured artist. He praised his craft, wit, and mastery of language, not his "tortured soul." He was celebrated as a master practitioner of his trade. Theater was also viewed as low-status trashy popular entertainment at the time.Still, other mediums did have early forms of the "artist's soul" narrative well before the 15th century. The ancient Greeks believed poets were possessed by the Muses or divine frenzy. So while "art having a soul" isn't strictly a Romantic invention, the idea that art's primary value lies in expressing an inner, transcendent human soul (rather than demonstrating skill, utility, or civic function) is very much an invention of that era.
>>98607527Note that even the muse thing. The Greek mania or "divine frenzy" mentioned by Plato wasn't actually a praise of the artist's personal soul. The artist was merely a passive, empty vessel: a channel through which a Muse or god spoke. The genius belonged to the divine entity, not the human carrying the pen or chisel.
I prefer to use Hero Forge because it allows me to change easily outfits and hairstyles, but one game all other players went for anime avatars and my HF stood out like a sore thumb, so I told a slop machine to make it look more anime.Nice thing about new models is that they can change details like hair colour and not make the whole result have this >>98605994 basic style that triggers my uncanny valley effect.
The thing is that with minimal effort slop can look passable, compare >>98606811 to >>98605994.But people use AI precisely because they don't want to make any effort.Another thing is that I haven't found any model that makes characters in the 3-7/10 attractiveness range. It's always picture perfect model face until you go overboard with the prompt and get an ugly bastard or an old hag. I have one character that's supposed to be middle aged and with a horse face and the slop gives me either Hollywood handsome or 70-year-old hobo.Conversely, I have skill issues making attractive faces in Hero Forge. :-P
Actors and actresses have often been one of the lowest rungs in society and often doubled as prostitutes for a good reason.
>>98607515Easier to make tokens for online play that way. Cause otherwise you just pull a pic you found online cause there’s more important shot to do, and the player complains that’s not what their character looks like at all despite not giving you anything to work with. Like it’s not that important in the grand scheme of things, but stuff like it being like pulling teeth to get a single jpg from someone to help them gets annoying.
>>98607562Honestly, it’s always been more about attitude than anything when it comes to actual tabletops. The couple of times someone has used ai art at my table, it was night and day. One made it clear he just couldn’t find what he wanted online and just wanted something for their character sheet, the other copped an attitude about how their ai generated glub shitto was god’s gift to art and got real pissy nobody else cared. For gamers in particular, AI fills a niche actual artists have difficulty competing in. It's not even a desirable niche. The images people use for a character in an RPG are usually:>compositionally boring >needed within 24 to 48 hours>valued by the user at less than 50 dollarsThis isn't universal, but I've been in the hobby long enough to confidently say it describes most players. Now, an artist would point out that these are unreasonable and undesirable conditions and refuse to cater to them. And they're not really wrong, either. Until the last few years, this means most players just>use references from celebrities, art posted onlineOr>draw a scribble Both have their weaknesses. Digging through the trash heap images for something approximately right is time consuming and rarely actually works perfectly. As much as you politically correct types will claim bad art is better than no art, something that looks nothing like what the player sees in their mind is not satisfying for the player and not useful for the GM or the other players. It is also embarrassing to them, often. The idea that art has inherent value is a false canard.Into this gap steps AI. It's free. It's quick. It will humor very specific details. The time you spend doomscrolling gis, deviantart, pinterest, artstation, Twitter, troonsky, etc. is instead spent tweaking. Are these images art? No! But they fulfill a very specific demand niche. And so you're seeing more and more people do it. I expect this will become more common as models improve in their ability to obey instructions and eliminate hallucinations. I wouldn't expect actual artists to be splattered expect graphic designers who do UI mockups and logos, or the ones who do globohomo clipart. That's sad I guess, but no one cared when Bubba Joe's mill job got sent to India, and no one will care when the dude designing the Liberty Mutual logo is replaced with a clanker, either. Tough old world.
>>98608292Nah it was just a one off for a player token, game only lasted 9 sessions.
>>98608320Leave it to AIfags to take three paragraphs to say >I'm retarded
>Goes from 'It's bad because it's AI art, all AI art is dogshit, anyone who uses it doesn't have a brain' to 'Uh, actually I never said it was AI art, I just said it was bad, please don't bully me for not even checking before going off on one ;_;' after being punkedI guess reverse image search is another one of those devil tools only retards know how to use, eh buddy?
>>98608320it's really hilarious how these people always have a bone to pick with artists.

>>98608377Probably, AIfags tend to be desperate for attention.
>>98608387I can give you one more attention, but then you're on your own for filling the thread up.Unless you have something funny in there.
>>98608344Oh no, I don't hate them. I don't hate Bubba Joe, either. I draw that comparison on purpose because both do a (valuable) job that no one romanticized and no one will care enough to try to save. You don't have to believe me, go ask graphic designers trying to fight corpos to hire them and not chatGPT. In some cases the human wins because AI is not nearly as cost efficient as its cultists pretend, but low end artist jobs like that are ones AI actually *can* do. If the last 100 years shows anything, any job that can be replaced with a machine or a cheaper laborer will be. I don't think that's going to change now that it's coming for artists in a new way.
>>98608420>N-nuh uhlol, keep backpeddlin'
>>98608342I probably should've listened to you.
>>98608435If you're going to go off about artists unprompted, you make things real obvious.

>>98604047The question you actually seem to be asking is: "how do I make them stop?"There are three ways:1.) Exercise your authority to force them to stop ("do not use AI art or you can't play").2.) Search for players who already agree with your dislike for AI images.3.) Solve the problem your players are solving with AI in a better way.
>>98604174If it gives you exactly what you think you envision you probably have an extremely low resolution animation tbqh
>>98608121CuteThe whole point of playing pretend with your friends is to communicate as humans, involving the unholy machine is spiritually the same as looking at your phone the whole time at the table or otherwise being a golem and not a man.
>>98608601Okay, interesting religion, but that doesn't really answer OP.
>>98608601ttrpgs are not a visual medium, you shouldn't need any pictures at all
>>98604047You get slop or penis drawings. Best I can do.
>>98608619And yet, going back to the 70s, TTRPGs are a visual medium and those that skipped on art were and indeed still are mocked for it.
>>98608627Are penis drawing drawings of a penis or drawing made by penis?
>>98608640Drawing of a penis, made by a penis. Like creates like. The pen is held via urethral sounding.
>>98608647How very avant-garde, I'm sure Salvador Dali would approve.
>>98608619Not wrong, which is why pictures that corrupt the imagination are worse than no pictures. AI imagery is not good because of how imagination works. Until you see or create a concrete image, the image in your mind is flexible and not fully defined unless you spend a good amount of time rotating it in your head, and even then it remains malleable until manifested in some way. Once you generate an image you corrupt that nascent image, it becomes solidified by an outside force, where as creating it yourself is the natural process of maturation into a complete form for the imaginary image. If you're retarded and disagree because you're the kind of sweatpants person that watches short form video all day or whatever and lacks any introspection, I dont care, this message is for knowers.
>>98608619kind of and kind of not. the books do use art to communicate the setting and feel through art. to try to bring every player onto the same baseline
>>98606387A man of culture.
>>98608637Yeah, it's great at padding page count and pandering to wankers (or whatever gooners used to be called back then), which helps with sales, but adds nothing to objective quality of a game.
>>98608661If creating a thing corrupts the idea of a thing, then commissioning an artist or having a character art folder is no better than straight sloppin it.
>>98604174Or you're like me, go find a Fire Emblem character maker and go ham with it..
>>98608680It has a similar effect, and creating it is by far the best, but commissioning is direct communication with another imagination, and character art is adoption from another imagination, which are both superior to direction corruption of your imagination
>>98608678I don't know many RPG people who masturbate to city maps or pictures of beholders or the soijak door from Tomb of Horrors.Did know a guy who stuck his dick in its mouth though.
>>98604047>>98604174>might fit, but diverges in points A, B or CIt's a bit of a shame. Understandable that players want an accurate pic of their character. But there is a magic in friction and limitation. Including not getting exactly what you want. There was a character whose pic had some elements that didn't fit, so I added some backstory to explain them, and that character would turn into one of my favorites.
Watching those who don't believe in anything, attempting to appeal to those who believe in something using their own language is so aggressively painful. You can scream soul as much as you like, but the problem is you don't fucking believe in one to begin with so why would I or anyone else listen to you? You smug, cringelord fuckers have taken every chance in the past when it suited you to smuckle about how everyone is just a meat computer riding a giant rock tghrough space. But the picosecond you're inconvenienced by something, oh, suddenly we're all the emetheral children of the Mumischerheiligergeist and us refusing to shuck you $2m annually to draw cocks in your own shit on canvas. You deserve the suffering you endure, not because all suffering is sacred and noble, but because the rest of us are watching Lucifer during his fall and going 'Lol, warned him about his ego'
>>98608695Thats a really important point. Friction points are often the main place where creativity happens in reality.
>>98608690I'll allow human imagination is superior to computer simulation. That still doesn't solve the cost or time problems, which are the ones you need to solve if you want people to stop sloppin on their own rather than forcing them.
>>98608699Trying to figure out what you're saying here because it's weird and idiosyncratic, you believe the people who are anti AI are nihilistic basedence types just larping?
>>98608709I dont particularly care if individuals make bad choices that are bad for them. People eat fast food every day, that will never stop. But lets not deceive ourselves that it's a good or even neutral thing, or that it's polite to do the equivalent in social activities. Taking the easy way is one thing in day to day necessities, but in an optional social hobby, it's gatekeeping worthy.
>>98608730I'm saying most anti-AI people are unrelenting materialists who have spent quite a lot of time smugly telling others the changes brought on by technology on their lifestyles are things they should just live with. The 'Learn to code' types. And any attempt to hoot, rave and kvetch about how AI art is soulless is just them trying to save their own livelihoods using words they think will influence people they never (and will never) extended an inch of consideration towards. If AI were fucking over, I don't know, wood carvers or something, in the exact same way they claim it fucks them over, they'd give not a single tug of their cocks over it.
>>98608763I don't disagree. Still, I dread the day AI becomes cost efficient enough to do to art what compushit graphics have done to animation and special effects.
>>98608699>Mumischerheiligergeistwhat is that even supposed to mean
>>98608802I think it's the safeword anon is supposed to yell out when he's getting pegged too hard at the Foltersexkirker
>>98608800Oh don't get me wrong, there's going to be some drawbacks, dogshit and dubious fuckery to AI.But at the end of the day we've all got to live with new technology as it comes. The only people who spend all their effort trying to put the toothpaste back in the bottle are Luddites. And their modern equivalent who, ironically enough, also tend to be men in dresses.
>>98608763You've gotten two different types of people in your head mixed up and combined into one
>>98608763I dont think that's close to true outside of the nigger-cattle world of redditors who just repeat the opinions they're told to where ai-bad is popular, and they're the people who use the arguments of water usage, plagiarism, and energy efficiency because the only language they understand is materialism. In fact though, such people are vaguely spiritually aware, and are just the "mass" who can only express their half formed world view in language they're given. They have a vague intuitive understanding of the obvious spiritual evil at play. Trying to meaningfully critique their world view logically is a fools errand since it's all external language that only gets a surface level vibe check, so going "hehe - but before you said..." to that type of person is only good for le epic reaction video one liners, and little else. Basically, they're women. The actual, ideologically considered materialists are massive AI boosters who are the kind of dudes who read Less Wrong and think this is all the coming of their material god of Reason and Logic. The other big pro ai group just being ideologically vapid materialists, like boomers and gooners who don't have a single thought in their heads other than want and spite, but perhaps think they're "spiritual" because the consider themselves Christians despite just being therapeutic moralistic deists or spiteful gooners who larp as a catholics or orthodox despite having nothing but a longing for tradition and meaning. I have yet to meet a single spiritually oriented person who doesn't instantly express skepticism at best towards AI unless they're a whacky low IQ UFO type nigga who are just the Less Wrong types with a layer of retard paint.
>>98608841I’m just sick of seeing the slop flooding the internet and the retards that act like it’s somehow a win against artists that are usually paid like shit anyways. Where do I fall under the Luddite umbrella?
>>98608730He's one of those people that believe everyone they don't like is one big monolith. And any differences inside that monolith is just hypocrisy or schizophrenia.
>>98608826The thing that scares me is that we lose the ability to do superior things that require a great deal of human skill when inferior things are cheap. Nowhere is this more obvious than in animation. Once the people who master and teach those skills die out, those skills are gone and must needs be rediscovered or done without. Which leaves us in an uglier, more vapid world.
>>98608882Very true with animation. I've noticed significant decay in my own ability to program, even though I'm making much more much faster. Even seeing the process happening, it's so powerful I feel obligated to make the Faustian bargain. It's very easy to imagine a future where no one knows how to draw, no one knows how to code, ect, because the 80% ok version ai shits out is good enough to never bother learning.I think we also have so much more powerful distractions than before. People used to learn skills for fun, sometimes obsessively. How many people devote hours to their passions now instead of vegetating watching videos? We're attacking quality and craft from all angles.
>>98608925The funny thing is, we anticipated this problem in fiction, whether it's the Eloi in The Time Machine or something as downstream as one of the AI starts in Stellaris.
>>98608738Jessie what the fuck are you talking about
>>98609074Ask chat gpt to simplify it for you
>>98609074He's saying he's not interested in the OP's issue, rather in the trend/problem AI represents as a "replacement" for human creative endeavors in general.
posting in a schizo threadi don't mind ai generally because it's a quick and easy approximation of what a player wants to represent their character asyou could also just make your dudes in oblivion, which is what I've been doing recentlyit doesn't matter thoughthe point is to have fun
>>98609087NTA but I think it's particularly pernicious because of how individual use cases are so innocuous. It's just gunning a fantasy character for a game that will, on average, last 3-5 sessions. It's just responding to email from a department that only exists to clog your inbox. It's just cheating on homework that is only busy work in the first place. Little by little you eliminate the part of you that exercises creative will in pursuit of convenience in petty circumstances. It's not inconceivable that the more you slack, the more vestigial your creative ability becomes, the less you use it because you're incompetent at it. Leaving you only with brute animal immediacy. Shitting, eating, fucking, fighting. And even this can be easy-streeted away with fent, lol.
>>98609086You used a >food analogy that's sign enough that your your nonsensical ramblings are simple enough, just incoherent.
>>98609177I don't agree that anything which evokes feeling is art in the first place. I don't think things like Tree are art, or if they are, they're bad or even evil art (by virtue of bringing contempt to the word).
>>98609177Emotional reaction to AI art is very diluted, sure the overall sum of reaction seems strong, but that's weak reaction per piece multiplied by sheer volume being produced faster than humanly possible.Truly profound art gets it right in a single image, because brevity is wit.
