It's a bit early, but here's a thread discussing the second wave of Cosmere RPG books, this time covering the setting of the Mistborn novels. The digital release of the Kickstarter pdfs drops some time tomorrow, but there's already plenty of old and new leaks on the internet.I know there's at least one other person on /tg/ who plays this game, I see them requesting the same pdfs in the pdfshare thread.
>>98605551Personally, I only "played" it since the GM is a big fan of Sanderson, but she failed to run game by rules (which is 5e-based combat slop). I really can't see potential of this project other than being a convoluted merch.
>>98605551My group did try out the Stormlight game, though some of the members were more into those books. I think it's a solid enough system. The talent trees allow for some decent customization, and it's simple enough to get a grasp of. Probably not worth it unless at least some of the players are interested in the base lore of the setting though.
>>98605681>I really can't see potential of this project other than being a convoluted merch. There's certain people (myself included) who see Sanderson's complex magic systems, intentionally left with holes for theorycrafters to spend endless hours of debate on, who see this game as a vehicle to feed us nuggets of information while also serving as a functioning game. There's plenty of people who go to Sanderson book signings to have their questions answered, often receiving a RAFO (Read And Find Out) if Sanderson expects that the answer will be plot relevant in a future book.
>>98605551I bought in and I kinda regret it after finding out it was just gonna be a 5E mod. Oh well.
Read the Stormlight rules the other day, there was some pretty neato-burrito stuff in there but I just personally couldn't care less about Stormlight, read the first two books way back in the day then lost interest and I haven't heard anything good about the rest of themI have fond memories of Mistborn and I'll probably check out this release eventually, but I doubt I would ever want to play in any Cosmere setting
>>98606425There's a setting agnostic version called Plotweaver that's going through open playtesting right now
A thread died for this OP.You should feel shame for clogging up the board with your dead game.
>>98605551If it's lucky, it will be like daggerheart. No one really plays it but just be a book on their shelf. Maybe a few random players that are more fans of the IP than the book themselves. Think like the other IP based TTRPGS like Star Trek, Star Wars, Marvel, DC, Ninja Turtles, Power Ranger, etc
>>98605551It's a decent enough system and I've had a p.decent time running Stonewalkers, but I don't think it overall has strong enough bones to stand on its own without the support of Sanderson's fandom. The setting-agnostic release will die forgotten pretty fast.
I really don't know what possessed them to do single d20 resolution aside from aping D&D (at which point, presumably someone should have asked "can we really overtake D&D")
The only reason these books got funded was because it is also just an art book.No one will play this garbage.
Has anyone shared the new PDFs anywhere?
That would imply people bought it so no.
>>98606425>read the first two books way back in the day then lost interest and I haven't heard anything good about the rest of themBook three is decent, but after that it takes a nosedive in quality
>>98609076It's in the top ten of the highest funded kickstarters, even if no one bought it except the backers, that's still 55000~ people who spent on average $275~ dollars each.
>>98610918Wow, it was that popular? Impressive!
>>98605551Sanderfags, do I absolutely need the Stormlight Handbook for the core rules, or will pic related have them as well? I could see myself running a Mistborn game, but I really don't give a rat's ass about Stormlight.
>>98617073They're self-contained rulebooks. The Stormlight Handbook might include some extra options you'd wish to use, like alternate Specialities for the Heroic Paths, but the Mistborn Handbook is feature complete. Some of what's unique in the Heroic player options is setting specific though. The Stormlight Warrior has Duelist, Shardbearer, and Soldier instead of Mistborn's Brawler, Gunslinger, and Soldier but the Stormlight options don't make as much sense as using Stormlight's Spy or Assassin. Unless you're doing very explicit crossover characters. Which is something the games fully support, it's all the same rules and magic is written to interact where it should.
>>98617149Cool, thanks
>>98605681>which is 5e-based combat slop>t. didn't read the rulesJust having d20 roll-over doesn't make something 5e-based.
>>98620412It still have all your bonus actions and reactions, rolling initiative damage rolls and skill progression, grid, and classess with just perks for combat. It is not a splatbook, but it is exactly the same tired shit which makes modern D&D a drag with no clear design purpose but boring combat. Not to mention the d6 die gimmik which is so poorly thought through it just additional layer neither players nor GM want to interact with.
>>98620577>It still have all your bonus actionsNo, it uses PF2e three-action system.>rolling initiative No, it uses the SotDL Fast/Slow turn system.>skill progressionModern D&D doesn't do point buy skill progression.>gridWhy is this even a complaint? You can run it easily enough without a grid if you don't want to, tho.>classless with perks for combatIt has non-combat perks and when the fuck has Classless been a D&D thing?>no clear design purpose but boring combatIt has the design purpose of emulating BrandoSando's high fantasy books, which it is p.good at.>the d6 die gimmikWhich is pretty universally liked because for GMs it's an easy way to spike the tension and for players it can either save a bad roll or make a good one pop off extra hard. Are you just the guy from the "I fucking hate combat" thread? Because the Cosmere RPG has actual things to criticize, but you're just bulling shit out of your ass.
>>98620577>It still have all your bonus actions and reactions, rolling initiativeThere are no bonus actions and no initiative rolls, you choose whether you act quickly or slowly and gain two or three actions based on it.>damage rollsLike almost every other RPG that doesn't use static damage.>skill progressionDifferent, and mostly automatic in 5e.>gridOptional in both.>classess with just perks for combatWrong for both.>Not to mention the d6 die gimmikI'm not convinced about the plot die either.
>>98620577>bonus actionIt doesn't>reactionDifferent enough>rolling for initiativeIt doesn't>damage rollsLol>skill progressionSince when is that in 5e?>and classes with just perks for combatWrong
>>98620577>the d6 die gimmik which is so poorly thought through it just additional layer neither players nor GM want to interact withI like it for the most part, my only gripe is they want you to use it roughly only once every 3 rolls, but also use it for important rolls or ones with a large chance of mistake, so you either ignore the one in 3 rolls thing or can go several turns of rolls without plot die just to ensure you maintain the average. Add player abilities to roll the plot die on demand and you might as well just not count their plot die roll to that average.
I'm liking the new rules, but limiting two heroic path subtrees to era 2 with no era 1 equivalent seems uneven. I get that making and using guns as a specialty make them era 2 exclusive, but not having a single era 1 exclusive to compensate makes it feel they got the short end of the stick. You'd think it would balance out by Era 1 having the all metal versions of the metallic paths (mistborns and feruchemists), but per the rules you've got to individually train each of those metals before you unlock their non-nascent versions and each have separate skill trees with only some of the pushing/pulling pairs of metals having the same named talents to cover prerequisites. Plus, if as an Era 1 Feruchemist you happened upon a bead of Lerasium to make you a Fullborn, you don't gain the ability to compound like a Twinborn since that ability is limited specifically to the Twinborn Metallic Path.
>>98605551>Handbook waffling on about safety tools for five(5) pages>Adventure book giving pronouns for NPCs>Pic related existingDropped.
>>98623382Imagine being filtered by an unironic parody character.
>>98623150Replying to my own post, I did make a mistake. You get to learn each metal push/pull version as as a pair, so it takes somewhere between 8-10 (depending on if you're learning the god metals) goals (which if your progress is only once a session then that's like 24 sessions). The real problem is as a Feruchemist, you can only have a number of metalminds equal to your Intelligence modifier unless you get the talent that then bumps it up to your Feruchemy modifier, which won't be even half your possible metals until level 6, which is when the Mistborn Legacy Adventure ends.
>>98605551Does it have rules for Fullborn or compounding?
>>98623494At least someone has standards, not like you.
>>98624095It does have rules for compounding, as part of the era 2 twinborn tree, but you can't gain access to other metalborn trees after choosing one except when specifically taking Lerasium or one of it's alloys, giving you the Mistborn key talent for Lerasium, and either the Misting key talent if you weren't an Allomancer at all or a free talent if you were. Either Lerasium or its alloy also both give a +2 to max investiture, which is how the strength of a Allomancer's maximum power is determined in the game.Compounding is broken up into two talents: Compounder and Compound Recursion. Compounder lets you consume a metalmind, and gain the ability to spend investiture usually gained as an Allomancer from using the Drink Vial action to spend it as if it were metalmind charges until the end of the scene. Compound Recursion lets you put those back into a metalmind, because per the rules you can't tap and store at the same time, so they have to make it so that tapping it in this way stores it automatically. They threw non-compounders a bone, though. They instead gain Alloyed Resonance, which allows you to spend investiture to give advantage to a Feruchemy skill or a charge to give advantage to an Allomancy skill. That talent then upgrades into Metallic Synergy, which as a free action lets you use your other power (the one you didn't give advantage to) as a free action.
>>98623382To be fair, I own all the Mistborn books and I've never read anything related to Allomancer Jak on purpose.
>>98623382>safety toolsLike goggles and nitrile gloves?
>>98630852Like X cards. Mistborn era 1 at least has eugenics, racial genocide, body horror, mutilation, systemic abuse, and racial based class systems which include slavery. The kind of people that freak out about this stuff typically already use websites to see what books and systems to avoid, so I don't know why systems bother putting reminders in the books.
>>98632476It's a humiliation ritual, meant to exploit your good nature to gain control over your game.
>>98636277Except I didn't even read the section, I skimmed the subsection titles, went "yeah those are in the setting", and then moved on.
>>98605551Since Mistborn is out, what Metalborn power(s) would you choose to play as and why, assuming that being a full Mistborn or Feruchemist is out of course, and why? I’d probably copy Wax, since the powers synergize so well. Hard mode, you have to provide an additional answer of yours would be the same as mine. What about Knights Radiant Order(s), BTW?
>>98641183An Iron Compounder seems more interesting. You can pull on the lightest pieces of metal without worrying about ripping them out of buildings by storing all of your weight, and then can rip buildings down by using your compounded weight. Just make sure you're standing somewhere safe, a more modern setting means you might rip straight through the street into the sewers if you used that much weight with a human feet's weight distribution.
I know that someone on pdfshare already requested this, but since this thread is more Cosmere/Mistborn focused:I would like to kindly request the Foundry Modules, if a kind soul could share them :) (I already have the PDFs, if anyone's interested)
>>98641183Gold compounder, go full Wolverine/Deadpool.
>>98647353Nah, Wolverine is a ATin/FGold. Deadpool is a Gold Compounder though. If I wanted to build Spider-Man, I'd do ASteel/FChromium, tapping only as a reaction to dodge, and basically never store, completely relying on recovering it through short rests, because there's no point in Peter's Life that is dull (storing Fortune isn't as much becoming unlucky as it is your life being boring).
>>98605551It was mentioned the other day, but what Knights Radiant Order(s) would you join and why? I might try Skybreaker, to try something different, for example. Also, I can’t wait for the World-Hopper rules so we can do things like having a Misting become a Radiant, etc.!
>>98648276Going by their oaths, probably Elsecaller, though I feel there's a lot of overlap between the Elsecaller oaths and the Dustrbinger oaths. As for worldhopper rules, there's already rules in the book for when you have surges and allomancy. Breathe Stormlight gets upgraded to include the effects of Drink Vial for no extra action cost, and you can use Investiture for either. I hope we get a Worldhopper path that includes the worldhopper equivalent of the signature ability of non-compounding twinborns.
>>98605551Glad that this is finally out! What non-Cosmere works by Brandon Sanderson also deserve a game in your opinion? I’d love to see a supers game set in the Reckoners universe, in my case! Loved the twists to the concept it has!
>>98605551I think Sel is the next world on the list, but after that which Cosmere world are you looking forward to seeing the most and why? I want to be able to paint evil into submission, so you can guess my choice.
>>98659895I think Nalthis is next most likely after that, unless the White Sand rewrite becomes super popular and explains more about the darkside powers of Taldain.
>>98659895Randland.
>>98641212There has to be a breaking point where you store up and use so much weight that you can collapse yourself into a black hole, no? Maybe after years and years of storage
>>98660252Feruchemy by default makes you strong enough to support your own mass as you tap, I wonder what sort of strength making yourself planet-massed would give you before you broke through the crust of the Earth.
>>98660142There's already a WoT RPG system that's custom made for it. Not that it couldn't get a source book, but I don't know if Sanderson would even want to try to fit the rules of that world into this system.
>>98659895Gonna be honest, I only really know Reckoners, Mistborn and Stormlight. I want the writing to be good again more than anything. I should go read Elantris I guess
>>98660738Wheel of Time doesn't have that complex of a magical system. And unlike Brando you only need to adapt the one, everything else isn't as in depth as channeling.
>>98659921>White Sand rewrite I’m sorry, what?
>>98661883I'm not sure you can call WoT's magick a "system" at all. Despite having hundreds of pages dedicated to explaining it, absolutely nothing of actual value is communicated and all the Weave autism does nothing to make the reader more aware of the One Power's possibilities or limitations. It really is just an over-explained "anything goes" force.
>>98665835Sanderson is making a novel version of the story of the comic after feeling it isn't good enough.
>>98623382I don't see what's so bad about this other than the alpaca (or is it llama?) and the blue girl.I don't think alpacas can hold a human's weight, let alone two. And the blue girl is obviously suffering from silver poisoning, but that makes sense as this is the world that people have to eat metal to do little magic.
>>98669972The blue girl is Koloss-blooded, which essentially means she's part frankenstein's monster. The guy riding up front is essentially the most annoying autobiography author/adventurer that sensationalizes all his stories, and the llama is probably an internet reference that was already outdated when the first era 2 book came out in 2011.
>>98670039She looks good for being part monster.
>>98670121The full-blooded Koloss (which she could become if she underwent a ritual) would make her 10 feet tall and muscly like the Hulk without her skin growing stretchy to compensate. It's decidedly not a good look.
>>98666380Someone clearly didn't read the books or didn't understand them.
>>98670235NTA, but please explain it then, I never read them either.
>>98654027Snapshot mechanically could be a very fun game to run iterations of a mystery several times in sequence and track chaos and disruption of the simulation as players intervene to alter events and gather evidence for the prosecution.
>>98672909If you accept God into your heart you can do magic, but only if you are a woman. Men go insane and there is a race of aliens with the ability to sing to trees that doesn't do anything and people who can control wolves but these types of magic are slowly being lost.
>>98675451Aliens? And why do nothing? Wolves?
>>98678540Yeah.Big giant aliens with big ears who do tree magic and live apart from humanity. And the even weirder fox/snake ones.
>>98605551The Stormlight book had embarassingly shitty, cheap art.Half of the fucking armors were just copy pasted onto different backgrounds.Fanboys are just going to buy anything I guess, but this shit is obviously shovelware with no real quality. It's actually insulting, but nobody talks about it. The reason nobody talks about it is because Sanderslop cultists would never complain, and non-Sanderslop cultists would never even think to buy this dogshit in the first place, so it all just neatly slides under the radar.
>>98680697>Half of the fucking armors were just copy pasted onto different backgrounds. Examples?
>>98622329The one in three is meant to be an overall average, and they've also suggested things like backloading all the plot die rolls towards the end of the session or arc to make things more climactic. Personally, I'm a big fan of it, but I'm also pretty bad at remembering to ask for it as much as I should
>>98681096Nta, but it sounds like they're talking about the depictions on the Radiant Talent Trees. They're all unique designs, to the detriment of some like this one, but some of them do look like they're more dropped onto the background rather than drawn with it
>>98682366>>98681096The real issue is that the backgrounds are copy-pasted with lazy shooping. That coupled with the lack of shadows makes it look Adventure Quest paper doll tier.I think it's fair to say that it's cheap and ugly looking.
Anyone here get any of their minis? Are they good? I hear they're releasing some of them as extras in the new War For Roshar Kickstarter, but am unsure if they're going to be STLs or plastic kits
>>98605551Which Mistborn era would you prefer to play in and why? I’m a sucker for Era 1 so I can use Vin as an NPC.
>>98680697>The Stormlight book had embarassingly shitty, cheap art.Which let's be honest, the only reason why people bought these books was because they're just glorified art books for his shitty books. Much like the Avatar the Last Airbender game, sales mean nothing if no one is playing.
>>98685599I actually like it for the system, and have been running it non-stop since I got access to the beta rules. I'll probably be running my own homebrew setting in Plotweaver once that comes out
>>98684224Era 2 has all the interesting options in it, and feels a lot more open to having all sorts of bullshit happening. I'm probably going to migrate my stormlight campaigns over to it after they run their course
>>98689826I put mine on hiatus, and hopefully by the time I'm finished with my mistborn campaign, I can pivot back without my players having completely forgotten the stormlight setting (since none of my players read the books).
>>98686403embarrassing get some real taste in trpgs
>>98684224Era 1 is so much better than than the Era 2 novellas I've read, so that. Maybe Era 1.5.
>>98690162Such as?
>No responseLame, I wanted more systems to tryAnyway, what's your favorite mechanic from the metals? Mine is Chromium Feruchemy and how storing Connection with it literally makes you no longer an ally to your party members
>>98696749Feruchemy has the more interesting applications because storing and tapping a resource are sometimes two different somewhat beneficial abilities, like storing and tapping weight. But I can't deny that Steel Allomancy is tops, especially if you're making a coinshot or a twinborn.I saw that high-effort homebrew for Hemalurgy and was intrigued, but I know if I start using homebrew I'll end up going down a slippery slope.
>>98697103>Hemalurgy homebrewI haven't bothered looking too much at any I've seen, because I figure it's going to be a bunch of wank by people who think more talents = better, and not really representative of Hemalurgy as it is, or where it's going as the kind of magical cybernetic implants of the world
>>98697277It's just non-canon rules for making the spikes, including the impact of what certain mental spikes do when used, based on information we have so far from WoBs and the Mistborn Legacy Adventure.
>>98690918Why is is so much better? Explain please.
>>98702699I found the prose to be worse and more hurried, I didn't find any of the characters as interesting. I know it's a lot of personal preference but it was a personal preference question so what are you gonna do. I know it's a little unfair given the pagecount disparity but I don't need to be fair
>>98702741The cool thing about tabletop RPGs is that everything you mentioned can and will be substituted with your own stuff when you're running a game in the setting. Mistborn especially makes it really easy to be canon while ignoring the books, because everyone is either small time, or involved in some massive inaccessible plot in the background
>>98694473Shadow of the Demon Lord.
>>98704919Not everyone is into scat. Stop trying to push your disgusting fetish on unassuming anons.
>>98704933This is an unfunny meme.Shadow of the Demon Lord is a good system and a good setting.
>>98703575Yeah, but also the cool thing about TTRPGs is I don't need to use a setting I don't particularly care about like Era 2 Mistborn
>>98605551Who are your favorite Mistborn characters and how have you used them as NPCs?
>>98605551After being a Compounder, what are the best Twinborn metal combinations?
>>98710660I've got a player going A-Pewter/F-Steel for running running everywhere delivering bullet punches
>>98706395>Scat is a good fetish and shit tastes goodWhatever you say, man.
>>98605551Are you really opposing evil though? Or just trauma?
>>98713617I don't listen to the whimpering of nogames who speak only in memes.
>>98704919Looks interesting, though I'll probably never be able to get an actual group together for it
