Well I AM starting from scratch. Initially I thought about collecting 8ed. Chorfs (via some recast), but eventually my interest has moved towards the Empire.

So it's been out for a day. What are everyone's initial impressions of the WFRP 5e core rulebook?
Improvement over 4e?

Is there a rule that says we have to have a danse macabre edition at the start of each month or something

>>
>>98611628
>Improvement over 4e?
It's a strict improvement over 4e, yes. Combat looks to be faster and much more lethal for players, while the changes to CharGen are so blunt that I don't miss the loss of +90 XP for being a Good Boy and keeping all my rolls. The only gripes I have, and ones I've expressed quite a few times to my friends, are,
>Blackpowder weapons no longer reload off your SLs in Ranged (Blackpowder,) but a strict number of Actions that must be taken to Reload (effectively 3 rounds of nonstop reloading if you don't have Rapid Reload for a handgun.)
>Longbow has no Qualities
That's really it. I've had friends calm me down about both by pointing out how Blackpowder weapons were *already* set on a Round timer (plus RNG) and Longbow missing Damaging is a nothingburger since you can give it that quality if you're really upsetti.
>>
Anyone else find it ironic that TOW, which was supposed to be a limited scope revival of WHFB focused on The Old World, in specific an Empire civil war, seems to be spending half it's time focusing on Cathay?

I'm not complaining, it's proof that the game is getting significant investment but damn boy did this project have some significant scope change/creep during it's development. Would love a behinds the scenes article on what happened - along with Kislev's disappearance.

Makes a change from people wanting to shag Andy Law or a Firmir I guess.
>>
>>98611628
I feel the removal of talents giving hard roll improvements is good, as many talents in 4e are just statsticks (so to speak) and meant that higher level players could get some truly absurd SL's
>>
>>98611700
I'm personally impressed that they managed to make the Craftsman talents worth getting. Those talents were *shit* in 4e and now they make it significantly easier to make things during Downtime. Also, I like how there's Regional Events and Character Events, it feels very Conan 2d20.
If I was a Dark Whisper in the ear of the devs, I'd have suggested getting rid of coinage entirely and integrate TOW's abstract currency into 5e, where Brass 5 *actually means something* compared to Brass 3 or Silver 2.
>>
>>98611695
No one wants Andy Law except maybe his wife, and even then I'm not so sure
>>
>>98611714
>spoiler
i think they thought that since they went abstract in TOWRPG then WFRP5e needed to be crunchy, so keeping the old coinage mattered
>>
>>98611670
>I don't miss the loss of +90 XP for being a Good Boy and keeping all my rolls.
I do, and I'll be using that rule from 4e still.
>Blackpowder weapons
I think I'll give the new rule a shot but this might be another one I just use 4e rules for. Though it seems like they've really tried to limit the amount of SL bonuses players were collecting over time, so this might just be a natural result of that. And maybe it plays better this way when you use the full 5e rules.
It seems like they've reigned in the amount of power PCs gain over time through talents, which may be a good thing. I think 4e could get a bit silly towards the end of a campaign. Especially with how underpowered NPC profiles were.
>>
>>98611623
Hell yeah. A much better box than the Empire Battalion imo.

>>98611687
I don't think it's ironic. It's just as you said a symptom of the scope change. They expected TOW to be a small HH type game with some resin releases every couple months and not much else.

Now it's a major product line and they are trying to play catch up both with demand (Core set) and with new releases/stuff in the pipeline. The Tomb King resin banner being replaced by a plastic kit in what? 1 year and change? That hasn't been seen before afaik.
>>
>>98611725
>I think 4e could get a bit silly towards the end of a campaign.
There was a moment when running the Enemy Within that highlighted just how powerful 4e characters can get. The PCs stumbled into a meeting between Skaven and Chaos, which included a bonafide Chaos Warrior. I emphasized the 8 foot tall Norscan meathead juiced up by Chaos and wearing a half ton of plate armor, and when it came time to fight I had him charge at the party all scary-like. Except there was no fear, because our Tilean gunslinger whipped out two pistols and double-tapped him in the head, killing him instantly.

I wasn't upset at the outcome; players deserve to feel strong when they earned it, but it showed me that barely 20 sessions of playing can turn a starter shithead into a Chaos-killing beast.
>>
>>98611718

I get the feeling there's some weirdness in that relationship. Well aside from the threesomes with Loremaster of Sotek.
>>
>>98611687
Yes, it's obvious that this wasn't in the cards originally. It's pretty weird actually. Especially when you have stuff happening in the Empire but the story still doesn't involve the actual Empire, but instead some random Cathay fleet. A massive shame considering how interesting the time period could be for the Empire. If they're just going to be moving on to the Great War and Kislev soon, it'll be a massive waste.
>>
>>98611670
>Blackpowder weapons no longer reload off your SLs in Ranged (Blackpowder,)
I might houserule in that rapid reload can be taken multiple times, depending on how many players take guns in my upcoming campaign.

The other new map from the book, interestingly, this was one of the few sections of the book that was completely different and expanded upon, since the 4e example of Noble estate was the Barony of Böhrn, im not sure why this was changed, but so much else was kept the same
>>
>>98611749

Gods I hate the stupid Cathay visiting the Empire lore - plus the lore that it's actually not that unusual for Cathayan merchants to arrive in the Old World and the status in WHFB is actually not the norm but just a sign of the declining world.

I much preferred it when Cathay was distant and mysterious and the idea of a Cathayan rocking up in the Old World (even in the TOW timeline) was a likely as a Chinese person arriving in France in 1600, i.e. not impossible but damn rare.

I've got nothing against Cathay in TOW but they should have just focused on their wars against Chaos on the Bastion rather than come up with bollocks lore to get them into the Empire.

Also agreed, we're massively missing out on the Empire Civil War. Then again I would have wanted an old Forge World style book on that and we're clearly not getting that with GW's move to the crappy journal publications, so I'd have only been disappointed anyway.

Which is rubbish. They played it too safe. Objective wealth has always felt like an appendix on the guts of the game, and it's become inflamed more than once during my campaigns. The promise of wealth should be an *incentive*, not an explicit number to be doled out at the end of an adventure. I've gotten significantly more mileage out of the realities of Brass or Silver characters (available entertainment, what food they can afford, where they sleep, etc.) Than the money in their pockets.
>>
>>98611781
I don’t feel anything from this map.

I think the Cathay book looks interesting. Can't wait to get a non primarch/propagandist view of Cathay.
>>
>>98611786
I'd love a theaters of war kind of thing in 2.0. Some way to update the entire worlds plot, show whats happening in each part of the world, or, if they could do it without fucking it up, something that allows players to use theater specific rules. Like weather tables or battlefield modifiers like that 6th edition biome stuff had. Just so we can not have Cathay suddenly sends junk ships to the desert to fight tomb kings kind of shit.

The maps are dogshit. I'm shocked at how bad they are. They could have gone for utterly stylized or blandly realistic and somehow failed at either. There are some gorgeous maps for the Empire (I happen to own the one I thiiiink Andy Law made for 4e?) But this one is bad.

Also, I'm excited to see where 5e puts their stories. I heard more than a few rumblings that the spotlight province for 5e is Ostland, which is funny to me given how much of a shithole Ostland is.
>>
>>98611862

C7 usually go for cartoony maps with a obviously digital look to them. I hate it, wish they'd design the maps to look like actual in-universe maps or at least aged and hand drawn, like GW usually do in their Army books. It's weird because they go for a pseudo-hand drawn look for their character profiles.

Given we've got another 2 Sylvania books to come in the near future, I wouldn't be surprised if we get a big campaign that starts in Sylvania before moving off into Ostland/Kislev...either that or the Ostland rumours were garbled retellings of the in development Sylvania series.

I quite like that map, as well as the one for the Reikland. It's a good map for putting on during overland travel; add some foreground clouds, throw on a pleasant track from Total Warhammer, and maybe some ambient environmental sounds. It's incredibly comfy.
This is utterly tangential, but as a GM I've gotten strong use out of this specific track for both opening campaigns and concluding them.

It would still be Chaos. It's always been Chaos for me. If anything, starting over would be fun. There are precious few models I still actually want to collect and even fewer I can justify collecting at this point. It's not like getting 30-40 chaos thugs from the '80s is cheap, you know?
>>

>What army would you collect if you had to start completely from scratch?
Depends. If its something on rounds, maybe tau. If its something on a square, maybe, just maybe...demons. I would probably build the army from literal scretch with plasticard and my imagination. Maybe the greater demons I would buy in metal/plastic. I might even homebrew to make some new demon profiles, although at that point im not sure if I would still continue playing TOW, or even FB.

Too much of a grognard in love with older minis to contemplate building something big from scratch these days, so probably the idea I've had for decades at this point and never started - a very small dwarf army based on an old dwarf fortress save with each model converted to be a character from it.
>>

the biggest issue with 4e combat was that ranged combat was overpowered for several reasons. Ranged attacks were typically impossible to oppose without a shield. Most ranged weapons also had impale, doubling their crit rate, and benefited from ranges long enough that most attacks would get a bonus to hit from short range. This meant that ranged attacks were a constant stream of damage and crits that could not be avoided without using a shield and which carried no risk of getting crit in response. The defender's stats did not matter in the slightest and attackers were completely safe. Crossbows and Blackpowder weapons were somewhat balanced by Reload preventing them from attacking every turn(without substantial EXP investment, anyway) but Bows were easily the best weapon type in the game.
In 5e this is all, somehow, much much worse. Crit deflection has been removed and shields now require you to oppose ranged attacks with Dodge instead of Melee, so even heavily armoured characters will be pincushioned to death because crits are unavoidable and characters which use shields rarely have or want to invest in high Dodge. The Reload change means that 100 exp into Rapid Reload(which any character can now get using guaranteed Unusual Learning) removes the necessity of reloading Crossbows completely. So now both Bows and Crossbows are an endless stream of fuck you unavoidable damage and crits. Blackpowder, conversely, has gone from mediocre to trash, because even a very high investment character can't fire more than 1 shot every 3 turns at best. There is absolutely no reason to use a Handgun over a Crossbow: spending at minimum 2 out of every 3 turns doing nothing is not worth slightly higher damage(not even considering they also cost a lot more gold).
Ranged combat was overpowered as fuck in 4e and they made it even more overpowered in 5e, except somehow the rarest, most expensive and most interesting option is now the worst one.

In summary I have

- Wolf Rider Big Boss
- NG BSB
- 23 Big Uns
- 23 Boyz

- Stone Thrower

He haa

- Tyrant
- Lvl 2 Firebelly

- 5 Leadbelchers
- 1 Giant

My main issue is deployment and I am wondering how to deal with the giant and mournfang.

As >>98613563 said, it's a game, take what you think is pretty 'ard-your listing sounds good, but I don't know O&G but it got punch, some speed, some heavies and limited arty/shooting. Play the mission, get in the Orky mindset and it'll be all right.

If not, then do as I should do regarding the Greenskins and read about them; the legacy document is free on GW's site, and just check what the units can do, the army's possible tricks and try to have at the very least strategies/plans/ideas regarding XYZ Orge tactics/units/magic; know thy enemy and all that.
Then when you deploy you can position your units to counter his effectively, or at least, until contact with the enemy. The giant I'd got with the Black Orcs and some lfanking action with something fast like the wolf riders or boarboyz. Again it depends on deployment, if the Giant is on the center it might require some sacrifice or risky maneuvers

one of the things I like about Vermintide is that the characters (other than Kerillian) don't look particularly attractive with Victor and Sienna specifically being average looking. This is rare for any main character of a video game (or any sort of media in fact) and yet the way it was done by Fatshark, it feels organic and natural and not forced woke shit like body type representation, vitiligo representation, etc...

>What's the general consensus on them?
in general positive, as with most new models but similar to you that nobody really thought that a refresh of basic warriors and knights was neccesary.
>>
>>98615177
They're alright, pretty monopose.
The only two reasons I could see GW wanted to refresh them now were to distinguish them from the AoS Warrior range in design language and as an excuse to stop producing the metal upgrade sprues for great weapons and halberds, which presumably are more expensive than just making plastic versions in the future

It's a bit sad how the rules writers didn't bother future-proofing the shugengan lord and general statlines. Their current statlines imply two things: One, that the shugengan lords/generals themselves have T7 and 7 wounds even without their mount and two, that they'll never make on-foot versions of these units. Cathayfags should be upset about this, but we all know why they aren't.

>>

I'll completely agree if they just lift it completely from Total War. But if they do a more grounded approach of just cursed pirates it could work well. Give them a something closer to the necron style rez so each unit only gets a few wounds back at most a turn instead of sometimes 10+. Make their army special identity based around moving the enemy units in some way instead of making their own undead faster like TK or pure soaking hits like Counts.

Zombie crew core
Skeleton elite heavy infantry
Skeleton pistols
Skeleton sappers that are skirmish explosives ranged From beneath the sand style ambush
Grappling hook ballista that pulls monsters/behemoths towards it d6 inches
Cannons
Mortar that causes things to move away form it's impact location
Grapeshot that causes monsters/behemoths to give ground
Rat swarm
Seagull swarm maybe
Crab
Siren unit of some kind that pulls cav/infantry towards it d6 inches
Boatman "chariot", but not an animated ship. Closer to Charon kind of deal that operates like the black coach
Ogre Maneaters and leadbelchers undead or living

Just spitballing. Could do something interesting without going full lunacy.
>>
I dont like this persons suggestion at all.
>>
>>98616006

Can't imagine GW are going to spend the time sculpting a niche army like that. Feels like Vampire Coast should always be a cool idea for people who want to go mad on conversions.
>>
>>98616044
I'd agree except thats what they did with Cathay. And using some units like cannons, Grapeshot, maneaters and Belchers means you dont need new sculpts on a bunch of stuff. Maybe a different sprue for the crew of the siege but thats it.
>>
>>98616044
they would have to provide a good ruleset for them first, proxying them as imperials only goes so far
>>
>>98616044
If they wanted to add Vampires and another army of Undead to TOW without stepping on the toes of the SBGLs in AoS I feel like it’s a pretty obvious option. If it was an option, I figure a lot of it would hinge on the success of the TK refresh. If the skeletons are naked it leaves the door open for an upgrade sprue like how the TK snd VC used to share Skeleton warriors.

If GW weren't doing this "No shared armies between AoS and TOW" I'd agree but as it stands having Vampire Coast would be a good way for the old world team to get both something kinda like vampire counts in TOW, while also getting some more TWW secondaries in (Cathay's success proves this is a good strategy).

No clue on when, it's really weird that they're not in at launch. "Oh well the von Carsteins are currently not a big threat" is a shitty excuse when there's plenty of other vampires running around. Corporate bullshit about not wanting to cross the streams with models.

Anyway, their legacy army rules are mostly fine, the big problem is the Vampires themselves. Being limited to Wizard level 3 (and having to pay out the nose for it) makes them very sub-optimal generals, and not having an easy armored caster workaround (but also not having the bloodlines shenanigans of 6th) makes them pigeonholed into dragonlord shenanigans.

I'd restore bloodlines but not make them as army-defining as they were in 6th. Carsteins get bonus leadership, Lahmians get bonus initiative, Necrarchs get higher starting wizard level, Blood Dragons get bonus weapon skill, and Strigoi get their own unique statline. Maybe make Jade-Bloods core too, since Cathay's an army now. Make Vampire Powers not overpriced and underwhelming, have an expanded roster of basic powers and a few bloodline exclusive ones each. Make armored casting and level 4 wizard achievable albeit as a tax, and give them a few new units to justify this being a de-legacy-ing.
>>
>>98617076
I don't really like the total war games. You're forced to play as named characters and I don't appreciate that. WFB is supposed to be about /yourdudes/. Cathay beim in the game is good. Problem is how GW whitewashed it to appeal to China, but also that besides Chaos Barbarians and Beastmen, Cathay doesnt have any neighbouring hostile nations of size & note that are playable.
GW should release Kuresh or even Ind so Cathay can get some big warfare campaigns on their own backyard.
>>

they could have plenty of backyard fights if gw wasn't retarded with cross compatibility and legacy factions

skaven, chaos dwarfs, ogres, wolf riders, and dark elves already had enough of a presence in the east without needing to make a faction out of kuresh

It depends.
Back when i started playing armies and the hobby had a very different feel to them. Scratchbuilt weird and wacky units didn't look out of place in almost any army.

What determined my path all those yeara ago was the fact that i got a really good deal from a guy in my school who sold me a ton of 4th and 5th edition dwarfs for pennies on the dollar; and i just stuck with them. I have Scratchbuilt things for them and converted toys into artillery etc; but it's fairly hard to do it right.
I'm happy with my dwarfs and i enjoy painting them and adding to my never ending collection but, if i had to start today from zero it'd be mainly one of 2 choices.

1)humans.
I don't really give a fuck and would happily mix and match empire and bretonnian themes.
There's just soooooo many alternatives out there for fantasy and historical humans that it would be so easy to just do whatever i wanted exactly how i wanted it. Plus there's still some room for scratch building.

2)orcs and goblins.
These and skavens are the army that probably remained the most true to its original feel.
There's a lot of alternative greenskins out there especially in metal, both seriously grim and whimsically silly. I would also be able to scratchbuild the shit out of everything and it would still look good. Chariots, artillery, unit fillers, monsters, mounts... you name it.
>>
>>98617866

>>98617763
>skaven, chaos dwarfs, ogres
These litteraly pose no threat to them at all. For fucks sake ogres maintain neutrality with them so there aren’t any real conflicts with them
Chaos dwarves don’t exist, they likely never will, and their supposed geographical location will also never matter
Skaven are just free food. Regardless there’s nothing beyond random skirmishes you can do with them, Cathay probably has an all seeing eye that lets them cut them by their roots.
>wolf riders

Triumph and Treachery.
Chorfs vs White Wolves vs Tzeentch vs Khemri.
One of three custom scenario of a mini narrative campaign.

In this one there's a level 2 wizard in the tower which casts Fireball and Pillar of Flames at the start of every round on random targets. A player can gain the allegiance of the wizard by coming within 1" of tower and solving a riddle. If the answer is wrong or if another player already has the allegiance of the wizard, he'll have to bribe the wizard by spending victory points.
Whoever has the allegiance of the wizard at the end of the game can field him in his army for the rest of the campaign.

Question for y'all, if I have the Razor Banner attached to a unit of tomb guard with halberds does that give it effectively armorbane (3)?

Tq: I'm basically starting from scratch...and I've got tomb kings, Cathay, and goblins on order.
>>
>>98620624
first thing: armorbane doesnt stack
second thing: tomb guard have cleaving blow and ignore armor on 6s to wound against most infantry and cavalry anyway. so they may not need the razor banner in the first place, depending on what you want them to fight.

No, there's a temple of the jade-blooded in cathay, but it's unclear whether those are the same as the jade-blooded vampires or just another thing that the cathayans call jade-blooded.
Also because it's a temple of life magic, despite cathay not associating their life magic with jade like the west.
>>
>>98620816
Sadly they'd be white washed like Cathay. One, them and China are often at odds so using one as a good guy and the other as a bad guy or doing anything that can be read as "taking sides" would probably be too much risk for GW and they would worry it would impact their chances of selling their products to those two very large demographics. Not to mention back in the times of old fantasy, around 8th I think, one of the big guys (can't remember the name) mentioned in an interview that he tried pitching Ind or Araby as a new bad guy faction and was straight up told by the suits they can't have a non-white faction as the bad guys because of the implications.

So with Kislev coming out that would be another good guy human faction in a game that could use a new evil faction.

When that model was sculpted it was thought as a more generic monster rather than specifically a high elven thing.
Elven sea dragons should look closer to the ones depicted on their shields.

Even now, if you took that thing and ran it in an empire army, provided you have some kind of manann themed feature like a bsb, banner, priest, or a wizard, I'd not bat an eye.
And considering it's not some game breaking bullshit I doubt anyone else would object either.

currently building my ogre army.
i have 6 bulls, 4 leadbelchers and 5 ironguts.
i have to build another box of each. However i used 2 ogre bodies to build said 5 irongut and kitbash a butcher.
Hence i need to now decide if i want to build less bulls or leadbelchers.
Am i fine with 6 leadbelchers total (building 12 bulls) or should i go full 8. and only have 10 bulls then?
Another way would be to build even less bulls or leadbelchers to get a 10th. irongut.

I play both 6th and Old world.

it depends on what assumptions you make on whether dwarfs can or cannot do magic by nature, whether one will or will not react to dark magic by turning to stone, or whether runes can or cannot be made to do dark magic just like they can be used to do normal magic

in any case it's a very fringe case and would require an extraordinary character in extraordinary circumstances resulting in an extraordinary type of necromancer, not your run of the mill leech minion but bearded and short

Yes, that's exactly what I'm doing, I literally dusted off the minis that I bought brand new in 2007 lol. They're nice and easy to paint, I'm sure you'll have fun with them.

Night goblins can hold their own now, thanks to their special rules. Their leadership value gets boosted by their rank bonus, and they can claim one more rank than usual toward that bonus, so you can end up with Ld9 goblins iirc. Obviously you still need some damage dealing units too, but at least a full night goblin army can be fielded as more than just a joke now, unlike in previous editions where they would flee at the slightest thing.

If you're using purely skull pass, a couple of things to bear in mind: TOW minimum troll unit size is 2 iirc, and also I still think you need some damage dealers. Cheap second hand fanatics or squig hoppers maybe. Or the pack of two common trolls to keep slugdrool company.

Be sure to post updates if you do dust them off!

I heard some details were changed about Kislev in the revised core book. Did anything change about any of the other armies?

Cathay section got changed but that's more to line up with plotlines like them helping Marianburg, rather than just straight-up lore changes

Why isn’t there a profile for the kdai destroyer for chaos dwarves
Also why does the renegade pack change so much for them in the tow builder

I'm reading the Dwarf Player's Guide for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 4th edition, and it strikes me that it didn't undergo much revision work. Using a swivel gun requires the Ranged (Swivel Gun) skill? That's...not a thing?

At least, the only people who could learn it are Engineers, since they have Ranged (Any), requiring them to forgo Ranged (Blackpowder) or Ranged (Engineering) and they're basically the only ones.

Also not a skill that humans need to use their swivel guns. Then the mortars have different penalties to fire out of line of sight (-30 in the table, -20 in the text chunk on mortars).

Does anyone know if this was addressed in the errata for the book?

That's still there in the newest version. I guess madAlfred just expects a GM to make up the skill

Is it? Someone gave it to me for free recently, but since I'm not an elf player I donated it to my club. Hopefully whoever took it is actually going to use it in his elf army and not just selling it.

Is it possible for a cathayan sentinel to be corrupted or animated by chaos? I was thinking of running a converted/chaos'd up one as a bonegrinder giant.
>>
>>98623384
Lore wise they are normal inanimate statues animated by magical ritual so I don’t see why a chaos corrupted ritual wouldn’t be possible

I thought they were animated by a soul completely loyal to the celestial dragon?

Those are unconfirmed legends

Thank you for posting all these meme pictures. I even got to play a game in between! Where are they from?
