Battletech, one of the few wargames where most infantry can run faster in a ten second turn further than a mech mounted machinegun can shoot. Why are MGs so shit? I want my Stinger to stand off and hose the little shits from twenty hexes with it's MGs, not have to get only a single round of shooting before being mobbed with demo charges.

I don’t care that there’s only 3 republics in the setting that have battlemechs and that the largest of them is only 11 systems large. I will defend it to its dying breath, which will probably be soon.

Just walk backwards bro. Also infantry run 1 hex a turn, jump or mech infantry can go faster but unless you're in an annihilator or great tortoise you should be able to kite jump infantry and if you're in an annihilator you should be able to shotgun the infantry with 4x AC/10s or LB-X AC/10s.

As long as you die, it's fine. Republics are a shit form of government. Humans want to be ruled by a strong male leader who defines the law, not a cucked one who's bound by the law. Aristocratic dictatorships are the natural form of human society, and the sooner the mistake of democracy is dead, the sooner we can get to putting humanity back together and purging the libs and trannies. In Battletech.

>Aristocratic dictatorships are the natural form of human society
Which is why they essentially only exist in a vacuum of chaos and geopolitical instability? Pretty much any stable country has some forms of control whether an outright republic, having a senate or parliament, being an elective monarchy, or being limited in raising troops or taxes without some form of approval. Pretty much as soon as feudal Europe began to stabilize you saw the Magna Carta and the implementation of Paris Parlement a century later while Scandinavian monarchies have always been semi-elective with various heavy influences from the upper aristocracy. Hell even the Roman Empire and Eastern Roman Empire had the senate having significant influence on the emperor's authority and right to action and they had ample capability to depose him as armies were loyal to their commanders instead of the emperor personally so it was easy for the senate to say "hey kill this fucker and we'll make you emperor" which is how most civil wars happened, meanwhile senatorial opposition to individuals even those who managed to claim imperial authority in practice often hampered them to the point where they were eventually deposed or forced to recognize senatorial power.

It's because House Kurita is the only one to stick to a theme and actually try to express it visually. The Liaos switched up their identity under Sun-Tzu and it feels cheap, but at least they're still distinct regardless of Era.
The Mariks, Steiners, and Davions are all vaguely European knights but also don't do anything interesting with it.
Davions were supposed to be full on white knights, but that quickly got dropped when they were made bland to appeal as a generic good guy faction for the books even though that defeated the original purpose of the setting's backdrop.
The Steiners are vaguely German and like big, heavy mechs even though everyone else has those same big, heavy mechs anyway.
The writers forgot the FWL exists.
If even one of them went all in on knightly aesthetic they'd have completely mogged the other two by virtue of actually being interesting without writers having to prop them up the way Davions were hard carried by Hanse glaze for most of their protag faction era.

Continuing with the aesthetics discussion, I'd argue while the Dracs and Cappies have some unique designs, and the Fedsuns and Lyrans tend to be similar and share a knight aesthetic at times, the FWL should give itself more of a republic vibe, a mix of US/Rome without going full romaboo like the Marians.
Frankly bringing back Mariks was a mistake, the FWL should have refused into a full Republic with the Captain-General being an elected position relying on votes from the Senate. Lean on the fact the iron hold of a Successor House is at an end, unlike the rest of the Successor States.
>>
Instead of the Great Houses, a new BT universe should be introduced under the Continuum series in which the IS is dominated by five megacorporations which I created for my own original setting: Capitol (US), Bauhaus (European), Mishima (Japanese), Imperial (British) and Cybertronic (AdMech/Comstar)

This really bothers me and is way to much of an artifact of the fact this was designed to be a game first before anything, but even then it still doesn't make sense that MGs are so ass. Idk why BT is scared to do this but they should add an ammo type that gets introduced in later eras that allows for their range to at least be doubled with no drawbacks. By all accounts MGs are like 20mm vulcans, no reason for them to have a range of like 90 meters when IRL handheld squad automatic machine guns have an effective range of like 5X that. Makes no damn sense, plus MGs with double range would make MG spam mechs more viable which would be fun but the BT devs hate any kinds of fun that isn't medium laser spam fun

The oldest form of human government is monarchy. It has survived communism, fascism, and liberalism, and when the west falls and America is dead, monarchism will plant its flag on its corpse.

You do realise that oldest of the existing monarchies resides in the West mostly?
>>

>The oldest form of human government is monarchy
Not in any meaningful sense. Oldest forms of government recorded were more along the lines of eldership consensus.
>What do you think Grug leader of Oog tribe?
>What do you think Ug leader of Mog tribe?
>What do you think Bug leader of Gug tribe?

The only time you see unregulated authoritarianism is in unstable shitholes like Iraq under Saddam or full fledged tribalism like early Feudal Europe, and even then succession is so arbitrary that calling any of them monarchies is a stretch when someone can just arvitrarily topple the king and nobody bats an eye or the king dies and a warlord murders all his children and declares himself king. What was the basis for the deposition of the Merovingians? Pepinids were the real power so yeah, go for it. Who got to be king of Italy? Well the nobles invited Louis to depose Berengar and then invited Berengar to depose Louis and then invited Louis to depose Berengar and Louis was finally defeated and blinded.

This idea of monarchism outside of the early modern era having any formality or anything resembling consistent hereditary succession is a fabrication. The first consistently followed and formally written succession laws were those of France under Philip VI. Before that even agnatic succession was largely arbitrary, ignored when inconvenient, and usurpation on shaky or no grounds was common.

Sometime this month or next, my group will be starting a Draconis Reach campaign. I'm waiting on the Core book hitting shelves.

After lessons learned in the Hinterlands, the DR campaign will have everyone join one of two mercenary cooperatives similar to the canon Lone Wolves, and everyone in the coop takes the same contract, which is always opposed to the other coop's contract. This'll keep us synced up in time and space.

We decided that the merc company some of us made up for Scouring Sands will be the core of one coop. Since they're named the Roadrunners, the other coop inevitably got named the Coyotes.

I'm also gonna do a Mech Draft to start the companies. Everyone shows up with four mechs, stands around a table, passes them to the left, picks one, and passes the rest. This gets us the starting lineups for everyone. Should be fun.

I enjoyed scouring the MUL and MekBay for bullshit I could throw at the AI next I will admit. Also, fuck that horrible little shit the Locust IIC. First mission threw that hateful little thing at me and it basically fragged a brand new Rakshasa and Avatar before we were able to take it down. After that we afforded it a lot more respect and targeted it first.

I'm currently going into the last mission, having replaced the Avatar with a Timber Wolf and abusing the designers notes on cheap Omni-Pod swap costs. My mate decided to blow the rest of our bank on swapping out his old Thunderbolt for the meanest Daishi we could find on the MUL, and now we've got a Batchall to accept to finish things off.
I do like how they go out of there way to give Probes and ECM actual things to do that are scout related too.

Suppress them? You don’t need to suppress them. Just stop supplying them with food and they’ll literally all starve to death.
>>
>>98616919
Biology guy here: Genetic engineering can't really create functional hermaphrodites, because mammal genitals are derived from the bipotential gonad. A paired structure differentiates into either the testicles or ovaries, and the genitourinary tract differentiates into either penis or vagina, via a very long process that starts with the same tissues.

Your question is like asking if baking has managed to create both an apple pie and apple tart from the same apples. You need more apples to do both.

Theoretically, it would be possible to cybernetically create prosthetics that could be grafted in, or even culture the tissues to surgically attach, but that's a whole other question. Cybernetics that look and feel realistic and have nervous input are within Battletech's technology and probably your best bet.

How badly a shitty mono-product planet got fucked up is variable, and not all planets listed as dead actually died.
The great houses never had a reason to reestablish generic colonies in the face of the succession wars, but dead colonies are a great place to put a secret military base/staging point. Pirates love using them as bases/secret kingdoms, of course. Lostech prospectors might show up looking for lostech that was left behind. Cults might privately finance a colony/compound so their leaders can play god, but that's usually similar enough to pirates that no one else cares to differentiate them.

>>
>>98617633
I always thought they were originally in Seattle or somewhere else on the West Coast, what with all the references to Japan and other Asian cultures and a lot of important locations in the Star League era like Yakima Base and Unity City being in that region.
>>
>>98617811
Frobisher. They're full on fish people, gills and all. The Star League was trying to engineer a population to better colonize water worlds and it was mostly working out until the star league collapsed, Canopus paperclipped all the researchers, and mysterious pirates with exact knowledge of where all the fancy medical technology was kept started raiding the place. By the time it was rediscovered by people other than those mysterious pirates, the lack of active intervention has left their genetics all kinds of fucked up, with failing immune systems and other inherited problems, and it's likely they'll only get worse as the generations go on unless some seriously talented geneticists step up to fix the problems of a population of very poor and very out of the way fish people who can't offer any kind of meaningful payment or reward for doing so.
>>
>>98617846
The fish are the most extreme star league genetic modification (that we know of), but it's not the only one. There are populations that have been genetically adapted to thrive in higher or lower gravity. iirc, there are also populations modified so their bodies don't have a lethal reaction to airborne alien contaminants. Some of these groups have co-mingled, some are legally prevented from breeding with baseline humans.
>>
>>98617846
In case anyone's curious: Gills would not actually provide enough oxygen for a human. Humans can live with air that's 20% oxygen, so a liter of air provides about 200 mL of free oxygen. Seawater only provides 6-8 mL of free oxygen per liter, so adapting a mammal to breath oxygen would require a much lower metabolic rate and a massive reduction in the size and capability of an oxygen-hungry mammal brain. This is why, despite adapting to live in water, dolphins and whales will never evolve. Breathing air allows them to have much high metabolic rates and more brain capacity, giving them a unique evolutionary niche as compared to the sharks and whale sharks that are their main competitors.

And before someone asks, cracking water into free oxygen and hydrogen is a hugely intensive process that would not provide returns biologically.

But this is a big stompy mech game, not an evolutionary biology game.

I have mixed feelings on the periphery but RWR remnants confronting clanners is always sick as fuck.
The more vehemently anti-SL parts of the periphery fundamentally despise the core principles of Clan ideology and I find that fascinating when they interact. When Clanners confront the Great Houses and Comstar, the parties involved are on some level operating under the same fundamental tenet upon which they all agree: "The Star League was great and it should come back." Conflict arises from the differing natures of each side's resurrected Star League (mainly who gets to rule it).
But Von Strang and the more extremist Taurians reject this tenet outright and abhor the SL as a concept. To a Clanner, this mindset is probably nearly incomprehensible.

I would also like to add one thing on the subject of Clanners dealing with RWR remnants: I still cannot believe that the one crazy comstar guy LARPing as the descendant of Stefan Amaris turned out to not be LARPing at all and was actually the real deal.

>>98618302
I assume the Amaris bloodline is one of those "automatic promotions if you kill them" ones. Like the people distantly related to Wolverine from before the exodus even happened. Clanners headhunting random civilians because their fourteenth cousin eight times removed was a founding clanner surely endeared the clans in the eyes of the public.

Because most of the time, the characters are depicted as portraits made late in their reign not early on, and often come into power in their 40-50s into an extremely highly stressful position as head of a state.

Sure they could have access to the best medical care, but by all indications of stuff like average age and the like, the common person on the street lives longer lives than major players in the Inner Sphere by decades.

Like, the common Inner Sphere citizen has a life expectancy in the 90s with some going to 150. Meanwhile, it's kinda hard for any IS noble to live into their 80s.

>What was the point of the Refusal War if you're just going to have Vlad Ward kill the Jade Falcon leadership and declare Wolf independence again?
To make Yiffs Crusader clans and so antagonists.
To make both Green Birds and Yiffs weakened so they couldn't resume invasion in near future (that's literally was Ulric's plan)
>What was the point of splitting Clan Wolf into Warden and Crusader when they were eventually reunited again?

I think that would be a shame since they are a fairly unique faction, being Clanners who realized the warrior caste is a bunch of retards that fucked everything up for the rest of them, and reformed their society with the merchant caste in charge (CDS/CSF is similar but they're still led by warriors and do all the standard Clan retardation, but those warriors are also merchants on the side).

I don’t think AML is meant to be ‘smarter’ than CJF. The idea seems to be, the Merchant Factor was as pissed at Malvina as any Falcon left in the OZ and maybe even more so because Malvina wasn’t the type (unlike previous Khans) to really value stuff like investments. It’s pretty easy to imagine concluding the whole organization is deeply flawed if someone like Malvina manages to take control of it. Now, we’d all sing a different tune if she had own on Terra.
>>
>>98620363
Supposedly they see melee attacks as more reckless and uncontrollable, which is directly counter to their idea of minimum destruction warfare. Two mechs bashing each other does do more "unnecessary" damage compared to the ideal situation of a laser precision carving a hole in the enemy's gyro to force a surrender.
But in practice shooting someone with a UAC/20 or wildly blasting them with 8 mpls isn't much less destructive, and happens a lot more often than getting a single perfect skill shot for the win.

Hello frens,

I fancy getting into Battletech classic and I’ve already got some miniatures because I backed the mercenaries kickstarter, but I didn’t have time to play. Now that I’ve got the time, I’d like to play but I’ve got a problem : I’ve absolutely no idea what to play with the miniatures I’ve got. I’ve got loads of vehicles, and I was planning to play with loads of them, but I’ve been told that playing with too many of them is cancer af and I don’t want to end up with a nofun list that won’t be any fun for anyone. Here’s a list of all my mechs and vehicles :

Devastator, Flea, Firefly, Caesar, Quickdraw, Starslayer, Otsol, Chameleon, Cicada, Clint, Hermes II, Dervish, Jagermech, Scorpion, Vulkan, Whithworth, Locust IIC, Highlander IIC, Black Python

Maxim tank, Galleon tank, 4 Savannah Masters, Patton, 5 SRM/LRM carriers, SM5 Field Commander, 2 HT Demolishers, PPC Schrek, 2 Condor Hover Tanks, 2 Pegasus Hover Tanks, 2 Manicores, 2 patrol boats

Yeh t’s a lot, and that’s exactly the problem because I don’t know which ones to prioritise for painting... I’d really like to put together a bit of an IS OpFor/militia list with light and medium mechs and vehicles, but I’m not sure what to play, etc.

Does anyone have any ideas for potential lists using theses units ? Tips for list building etc ?

Thanks frens

Don't commit to anything. Because battletech games are typically 3-6 units, people expect you to throw a new list together every time you organize a game.

Your idea of doing a militia list is a good one. I would paint up the Ostsol, Dervish, Scorpion, and Starslayer to form your first lance. Back it up with the 2 manticores, Maxim, and Galleon when you want vehicle support. Then expand from there.

>>98621322
In a world where you can go hole up in the mountains or on an island where terrain protects you from greater powers, sure. None of that applies in space.

And you're really going to pretend Comstar, ruler of Terra with infinite money, political and religious protection and a gorillion SLDF battlemechs on top of all that, is in any way comparable to 1-4 random burnt out, badly populated planets in the Hinterlands?

Holy shit you're retarded.
>>
>>98621290
>relying on the weight of your mech
I mean, weight is going to be an advantage in most circumstances. More guns, more armor.

>Any retarded conscript can run headlong into an enemy mech and start swinging, gunning down an enemy mech takes skill.
feels like it would be the opposite, lore seems to support that moving mechs in more fluid and human ways is extremely difficult as a pilot. Meanwhile fire control and targeting computers conceivably do a lot of work for shooting.
In fact, one would think that the targeting computer would be dezgra given it removes even more skill from shooting and changes a contest of martial prowess into technological prowess.

None of it really makes sense when you think about it.
>>
>>98621338
>None of that applies in space.
It's actually does applies in space, because space is fuckhueg and even sole star system could produce shitton of measure to sustain and defend itself especially in Battletech universe.
Longstory short AML have plenty of ways to stick for a time in Hinterlands.
>badly populated planets in the Hinterlands

>>
>>98620363
>Why ARE melee attacks considered dishonourable anyway?
Because melee fight reduces chances for participants to surrender and increases chances of mutual destruction, ergo wasteful by Clan ways.

Individual planets are conquered all the damn time in canon, up to and including major and well defended worlds. Take one planet from a major power and they're annoyed. Take one planet from a minor power and they lost half their strength.

There's ugly blobs like a bunch of the Solaris Reseen. I got in my collection recently the first Colossus Reseen I've ever seen actually assembled and painted. There's ridiculous overscales like the Owens. There's the ridiculous underscales like the first sculpt Blood Asp. There's the million pieces era of the Project Phoenix and the Royal Mk I LAM's. There's the infamous Fafnir mold that usually doesn't want to cleanly fill up the giant chunk of metal. Oh, and the quads that overhang the bases ridiculously, but that's required to be accurate to the design.

Fine breakable barrels is just a normal thing. They're easy to drill out and replace or beef up with some aluminum tubing if they get fucked. The 1st Sculpt Masakari isn't any different than an Unseen Rifleman in that regard.

But there was no pressure inherent to the setting to glaze monarchism so much. It's a wargame setting for having mechs shoot at each other, it's not fucking game of thrones, nobody cares about the interpersonal drama, it's all about 'your dudes' anyways, the only cause they had to make monarchism so prevalent is to send a pro-monarchy message.

Strongly depends on the individual sculpt. But the wonderful thing about 3D printing is that the marginal cost to print is low, so you can try a couple and decide if you like it.

It's still portrayed as the best option of all available options. The only two viable options we ever see portrayed in the setting are the monarchism of the Houses, and the Clan system, and of the two the Clan system is portrayed far worse.

Republicanism is never even entertained as a viable system at all. It only exists in brief periods in small regions, usually before getting conquered or coup'ed.

One of my personal projects has been sculpting stuff to fit the common missing pieces of old minis but look a little more detailed and easy to tell when painted.

There's no reason to do 40k type scans, though. A sculpt will be a rip or the artist's own flavor, even to the point of making the mini less like the official and more like the art.
>>
>>98622713
Probably. There are sculptors who wanted some random unit that only has a single piece of art so they learned how to use a modeling program and stuck shapes together until they had something vaguely similar, then uploaded it for anyone else to use. There are sculptors who are an entire team that have modular models with options for every single canon, apocryphal, and popular fan made variant they could find. There's a guy who modeled the japtech artwork.

Huge variation. Lots of MWO rips and reposes are out there for free, but there’s just as many models that are trying to match the official art or inject their own style that you can get for a few bucks. A lot of sculptors out there break up the models into individual pieces which can help massively with the posing process, and of course if you learn a little bit of modeling yourself you can always make changes of your own. It’s a very good time to be into 3D printing.

You could argue anything, but than what's the point of arguing a logical basis for the inner sphere not fragmenting? The reason the inner sphere doesn't fragment despite St. Ives, Tamar, Rasalhague, Andurien, Orient, Vesper Marches, etc is because the writers don't want the Inner Sphere to be composed of two dozen factions including clans. There's nothing logicallt that would prevent say St. Ives Compact from remaining independent in perpetuity.

The combine is much stricter about media than its immediate neighbors in any direction, and transmitting anything larger than a text file via HPG is prohibitively expensive.

You’re overselling it.
Peasantry can often be overawed by pomp and pageantry of royalty but by and large pre-modern peoples were comfortable with their monarchical societies because that simply was the way things were, and as far as they were concerned the way it ought to be. Very few, if any people were super attached to their monarchs, even if they respected and were loyal to the institution of monarchy. The king himself was generally a distant figure.
If anything, the celebritization of monarchs themselves is a byproduct of the rise of nationalism in the 18th century. Monarchs from that point onwards were among other things representatives of their nation, and thus make an easy figure to rally nationalistic energies around.
Also monarchyfag, aren’t you American?

The King of Italy fled the country and threw himself at the mercy of the Allies while leaving his own army without orders. It is a miracle they didn't get executed, considering how an historical embarrassment the House of Savoy was (imagine being Frenchmen gifted the throne of Italy by the British and the only way you fight wars is to choke the enemy weapons with the corpses of your unfortunate subjects). The German Monarchy was terminally retarded in foreign politics and internal politics, and the Greek King wasn't even Greek.
Hereditary monarchies are terrible systems of government for developed nations. Btech nations, being barbaric shitholes, can work in that regard.

The Carrion Crow C continues to cement itself as my favorite little shit in the entire game. This one walked off the board with 3 kills against an enemy assault lance. It basically tied up the enemy Atlas and Shogun on its own, with the enemy Crockett and Wolverine engaging my Nova Cat and Stormcrow. The Nova Cat ate an early pilot hit from an unlucky turn 2 fall, and then proceeded to get his left torso ripped open and suffered 2 consecutive ammo explosions and a headshot, killing him from pilot death early on turn 3. The Stormcrow proceeded to 2v1 as best as it could, and once the Atlas was in range, it hucked a gauss slug into its wounded left leg that set off the streak SRM ammo and turned the Atlas into a crater.

By the end of turn 6, the Stormcrow is dead, the Wolverine has both side torsos open, the Crockett is looking thin on the CT, and the Shogun is fresh. My Carrion Crow proceeds to outmaneuver everything, cutting the left torso off of the Wolverine and killing it due to XL death, then rushes the Crockett, breaks the armor, and scores a gyro crit and a pilot hit to knock him out. Unfortunately, by this point the Carrion Crow is running low on SRM ammo and has lost one of its two pulse lasers, so it is looking very dire; the CC puts two more pulse lasers into the Crockett's CT to finish it off, but the FUCKING SHOGUN scores two separate TACs from SRM spam that lead to 2 engine crits and a gyro crit, leaving the CC on the verge of death. The next few turns it manages to get behind the shogun and crit out the SRMs and Snub PPC, explode its ammo, and KO the pilot, then finishes it off with an aimed shot to the head for the last pilot hit needed for the kill.

19 turns, and 2/3 of that was managed by a single 40-ton medium mech. Vicious little bastard, I love him.

To be fair the Scorpion Empire is forming a decent style of social syncretism and have abandoned a ton of clan autism. Granted 3/4ths of their military are still peyote addicts, but they have civilian representation in government and joining the clan military is relatively easy and they have no issue integrating useful bloodlines into their breeding program.
>>
>>98624692
Most of the Rimward periphery has been getting its shit back together since around the clan invasion. The Jihad only hit them a little bit collectively and they haven't had to deal with any big threats, mostly just pirates. It's the kind of recovery and build up that could be foreshadowing a big problem that'll knock them right back down (or fully galvanize them), but for now at least, the periphery is improving even without clan involvement.

Scorpions have an incredibly bright future ahead of them... if the writers had any comprehension of reality, industry or economics. They've been given a shit ton of planets which are in general better off than anything in the clan homeworlds, with abundant resources. And an actual population base to train and employ. Give them 50 years of even halfway competent leadership and they'll be cranking out regiments by the dozen once they roll out SLDF level mining and agriculture to their worlds.

HPGs recharge faster, so there's a lot less opportunity cost to an HPG transmission than loading your mail onto a JumpShip computer and sending it somewhere just to wait a week before it can go anywhere else. Physical goods also have to factor in DropShip transport to get them out to the jump point and back in system. They have the same maximum range of 30 light years, bug HPGs have a lot less lag over a single JumpShip. A command circuit where a DropShip shuttles between a different JumpShip at each location is almost as fast, but is an absolute pain in the ass to coordinate, and interesting things start happening to the crew if they go through too many jumps in quick succession. For further info, check the Snord repository, >Sourcebooks>FASA>Dropships and Jumpships.
