Necrons have been consistently good for years and that is unlikely to change since one of the lead balance team members has them as his favorite army. Marines are also always strong. Custodes are generally strong. Orks are arguably the strongest right now but we'll see how their new codex mixes things up.

Although I am obligated to say this isn't really the metric you should go by when selecting an army. With the exception of Necrons and Marines, things come and go from the top win rates, and by the time you get an army and paint it up, it may have already changed.

When selecting an army, you should go with the guys you want to read about the most, or the guys you want to see on your shelf. Rules and win rates change with the wind (unless you're necrons or marines), but the hobby aspects of the game are forever.

>>98616776
No, thankfully. I updated all my marines and SoB from metal.
>>
>>98616730

Right now, the "faction-specific" detachments can't be used with units that have other CHAPTER keywords.

This is probably a stopgap until the codex comes out but it does mean that you can mix-and-match chapter-specific detachments as long as you only run marine units with no CHAPTER keywords. So Salamander 2DP detachment + Black Templar 1DP detachment is totally kosher as long as you don't have Vulkan He'Stan, Adrax Agatone or any of the Black Templar specific units.

i like them both. zerg do a better job of having a weird variety of off the wall biomechanics and odd creatures.

tyranids do a better job of xenomorph giger-esque psuedo mechanical biomech. their variety of shapes was historically worse than the zerg, but as of the latest refresh and expansion from last edition they seem to be taking notes from the zerg and expanding the visual library of the range into more than just gaunt shapes of various sizes. way more body patterns now

I will die on the hill that Votann should have been Cosmonauts and 50s Soviet futurism as its design language, not Astronauts and 60s Western futurism.
The Soviet aesthetic fits far more into the setting where the Western one feels too "clean and safe."
Maybe someone in the design room said that doing it Soviet style would "be too similar to the Imperium;" they'd be right, but I still want Soviet dwarfs.

>Why are my shuriken weapons so ass?

shuriken weapons were generally never doing anything anyways unless you had a lethals/devs or +wound combo going, neither of which are effected by shit going from t4 to t5. cannons arguably took a hit with some of the stuff moving to T6 though.

scorpions are definitely relegated now purely to screens or clearing bulk chaff like gaunts, but thats not something eldar struggle with in the first place so its kinda hard to justify them outside of using them for their deployment options.

banshee stonks went up up up though

overall i'd say eldars interaction with the T5 change is a wash, they're not really any worse off except in some fringe cases, and in a lot of other ways they bring even more value since they werent particularly concerned with toughness anyways

You can only use deep strike if your unit would end up being more than 9 inches away from an enemy.
To prevent it, you space your units so that there is no area that is large enough for the enemy's deepstrike unit to land.

The easiest way to do it is to have a unit of infantry spaced to their maximum to get as much area covered by the 9" circle while still being close enough together to maintain coherency. 10-man squads are obviously better for this, cheap stuff like chaos cultists. This is more in reference to backline deepstrikes, if you're concerned about your front you shouldn't have to worry about it because you should have tanks/monsters to deal with them.

>>98617406
Why are you using infiltrators to counter deep strike?
The mid-field area that you'd be concerned about deep strike units landing on to crush your infiltrators SHOULD be screened on your first movement turn's advance out of your spawn by both the Infiltrators preexisting in the area and the rest of your army's advance. Deep strike can't be used on turn 1.

You don't need 100% coverage, you just need enough coverage that his entire unit can't fit in the play area if he'd try to land there.
>>

In the modern age? No reason. Every Death Guard and Thousand Sons army I've ever seen has thrown a fucking primarch at me since the model was released.

the last time gw gave a hard number of how many galaxies they've devoured, it's been a dozen, gw and the common man might be thinking about a dozen galaxies just like our own, but there are many galaxies that are way smaller and ours is surrounded by a number of those galaxies

so it's very much possible they come from andromeda, have consumed the dozen or so dwarf galaxies around the neighborhood and are just now trying to eat the biggest meal yet, the milky way

but if you ask anyone else, they'll tell you this is an underwhelming story and they should be something as old as the universe itself and have devoured a silly number of galaxy clusters, if not the rest of the universe

3rd/4th are basically the same edition.
There is little reason for using the 3rd edition rules when you have access to the 4th edition rule.
In any case you'll end mixing and matching things from 3rd to 7th mostly because the rules do not change too much and everything is very compatible with each other.

Tbh most factions didn't get shit for this new T5 standard meta. Because it’s the power fantasy faction and marine players never realize that people build lists by default to fight them so they always feel weaker than they think they should be.
>>
>>98617534
No, and yes.
Most of them are not sealed inside their armor and can just take it off, but some of them definetly can no longer remove it due to the various "blessings" the chaos gods have given them.
Though, they don't necesserarily need the gods to bless them either, they just need to hang around in the Warp for long enough.
People seem to commonly forget but the Warp itself (not the daemons or gods of chaos) is HORRIBLY "corrosive" to everything and mutates and morphs anything that it comes into contact with. And that alone can afflict a mutation onto a chaos marine where it basically fuses his body and armor into one being.

I kind of whish gw stuck with the vaguely civilized style of nids, where the technology is obviously organic, but follows artificial design patterns; more Giger-esque biomechanical monsters and less starship trooper bugs. I know it's way more efficient to just design something around it's purpose a la artillery piece is big bug with a super sphincter, but I like the idea that tyranids could have started out as any other kind of alien in the galaxy (individualistic/sentient) that fell down the rabbit hole of biological optimization which in turn led to them becoming a runaway technorganic hivemind that completely overshadowed its ancestral civilization.
They could have designed a line of standard bioforms that are augmented by symbiotic biotechnology. Like Hive Tyrants and Norn Emissaries aren't just really big tyranids, it's a slightly larger than average tyranid fused with a biological mecha. Exocrines aren't big gorillas with a gun in it's back, but a walking tank using a tyranid for it's brain.

Every projectile is now calculated, so the computer can no longer just fire through it's own ranks willy-nilly, the projectile will collide and deal damage to the first physical object it hits, which in large groups means most bullets are going in a friendly's back. ca had the same problem going into warhammer fantasy, and they got around it by making everything have an arc, even if only a slight one. They didn't do this in 40k because it would look retarded and now they're back at square one: big groups are useless past the first two ranks.

>that VN
The most unforgettable horror porn game I've ever played. No other game had a bunch of elementary schoolers gangbang a teenage girl against a wall. And the teenage girl loved it. No other game I've played had a 17 year old bishonen guy drink a 14 year old girl's piss and chase her down the hall to rape her, only to wind up getting anally raped by a 32 year old fat man. I still remember the scene where a 16-17 girl was hiding under a bed as her same age best friend was having sex with that same 32 year old fat guy on top. She heard every moan, bed shake and sound. In the wrong end she was discovered under the bed by her friend and made to join. A most terrifying scene was when an unwilling girl relives another girl's sex memories. The girl in the memory consented but the reliving girl didn't. It didn't matter that she was mentally screaming, her body in the memory did all the motions and actions as in history. It's like mind control rape except the victim was fully aware. Another scene the same girl and a friend were almost raped in a magic sex ritual, saved by the girl's older sister, and the backlash made the older sister want to rape her younger sister and friend.

The loli in this pic is freakishly lewd and once disguised herself as a teenage girl, fucked a boy until he nearly came, transformed back saying
>You thought you were having sex with a highschooler weren't you? I'm an elementary schooler all along!
And leglocks that boy, forcing him to cum inside her unprotected, when he screams in fear upon learning this. This isn't even getting into the tentacles, the gay sex, the lesbian sex, the incest, the sequel's mother/daughter lesbian scene, etc. The first chapter alone contains lots of lesbian sex scenes with an unavoidable girl masturbating in the bathroom. Truly horror is intrinsically connected with sexuality.

Millenial era lore zoomkinde
>Russ gets recruited by Emprah but big E has to reluctantly agree to make a bunch of his greybeard viking raiders into astartes instead of just the usual child soldier recruits
>These guys form the core of the 13th company of Space Wolves, known for being the grizzled spec ops that are basically the delta force black book space marines
>Heresy fails and Abaddon flees into the Eye of Terror
>13th give chase and don't come back, assumed dead but a plate is left for their leader at every major gathering on Fenris
>Abadonn launches his 13th Black Crusade in IRL 2003
>Codex Eye of Terror includes four new kitbash army rules, one of which is 13th Company Space Wolves
>After decades in the Eye -from their perspective its been 10k years outside- they have been hounding chaos forces and doing hit and run guerilla warfare and without resupply they have had to take bits of chaos armor to replace their own
>Also the Curse of the Wulfen aka the chapters geneseed flaw has run rampant without apothecaries and some say because the company was made up of much older recruits not put through the same filtering out process as the others
>GW sold a box that was a space marine sprue and chaos space marine sprue in the same box and said "eh 50/50 is a good balance but try not to make both the shoulders and power pack all chaos or it fucks up the look" and the official paint style was HH era space wolves mixed with Word Bearers parts and the company icon was a red wolf head over a white crescent moon on black shoulder pads

But i think they tried to retcon or downplay them since 8th edition as before it seemed like they were on some secret mission for Russ they wouldn't even tell the other companies about and the inquisition was real uneasy about their resistance to chaos and wulfen mutation.

All i had left in the bits. It was part of making a combat patrol themed on the 13th for a local painting/narrative deal and the Space Wolves CP is all primaris.

Though fun fact combining them with a Red Corsair kit was more than enough HH era classic heads and beakies so swings and roundabouts i guess, primaris boots look shitty to me but overall they look the part considering their whole deal is taking bits of armour while on the move and using what they can steal.

>You can say you don’t like certain parts
Okay, I'll pick up that anon's torch and carry on. Your commission artist (because c'mon son you can't tell us why all the basing looks different, we know it was commission work) relies far too heavily on nuln oil, and it makes everything take on this greasy, grimy look. This sort of shit was common like 10-20 years ago but we've all smartened up to the limitations of nuln oil by now, it's not magic gold particularly in this day and age of contrast paints and heaps of different washes and glazes.

Let's then break down the surfaces on >>98616789 because they are all over the place. First off the bears
>silver has no wash, super shiny in the recesses
>meanwhile nuln oil on the gold??
Why? Keep shading at a consistent level. Then you look up at the marines and it only gets worse.
>unfinished looking, flat gold on some details
>boltguns are just full dark grey, didn't even pick out details or go over with a drybrush
>wtf is that bright orange shoulderpad that gets an orange wash while the ENTIRE rest of the mini is washed in nuln oil (when a part has a wash)
The right shoulder pad literally looks like candy, or a bit of some other kids toy ripped off and glued on here. It's all so jarring and ugly. Anon, read the post I'm replying to, and then read mine again.
I'm pointing out that they literally REQUIRE it for some units.
However, I can also see the anti-kitbash approach that GW appears to take the rest of the time because of the varying degrees of wysiwyg both in tourneys and the playerbase they've cultivated and the removal of options in favor of a "streamlined" product line. This is why I said I wished they were more "put together," so that the ENTIRE company were all on the same page, either it's all-in "yes" or all-in "no" instead of this middle ground we're in right now where "sometimes yes, sometimes no" is the answer.
Reading comprehension.

>instead of this middle ground we're in right now where "sometimes yes, sometimes no"
It's been like this for some time, since midhammer. Whenever they went to the new website the company as a whole can't decide whether they want to encourage kitbashing, or restrict unit options so that there's no reason to kitbash... It is all so very tiring, yes. Sometimes I wish GW/Warhammer wasn't as big a company/IP as it is so that there'd be a more cohesive direction with things like this.

Gray is fine
All primer colors are *fine*, some just require a bit more work to do certain things.
Gray works wonders as a good middle-ground IME, doesn't make skin look sickly and doesn't require absurd amount of layering to cover up with lighter colors like a black primer would.
>>
>>98618382
I mean, most of us kit bash with our extensive collection of leftover bits from other kits. I would think it's relatively rare for people to go by new kits just for kit bashing.
>>
>>98618404
The only bad primers are corax white and mephiston red everything else is fine but a brighter one makes more translucent colours like red take more coats.
>>
>>98618412
I shit you not i hear younger people who got into the games from Hasbro shit going "i dont agree with kitbashing or 3d printing bits, its too close to piracy or cheating for me" and i hate how pro corpo people have become about fucking hobbies that when you get right down to it are just arts and crafts.

>>
>>98618382
You can just use leftover bits. I had 3 Magus models thanks to Combat Patrol boxes so I'm running one as a Benefictus with some extra bits and head-swap. I had some random neophytes as part of Goliath's crew, I gave them bombs from the acolytes/neophytes sprue so they're no Reductus Saboteurs. Saboteur alone goes for 33 euro for some reason so fuck that.
I'm thinking of expanding my Aberrant collection, I already have the bits so instead of getting 5 Aberrants I'll grab a box of 10 Goliath Gang from Necromunda and run them as aberrants, effectively at a 50% discount points wise
tl;dr it entire depends on what you're doing, it can save you a lot of money

>>98618404
Primer is primer, it gets covered by layers of paint. You can prime black for a bright coloured mini, it'll just take more time and layers to achieve that brightness. The colour really only matters in helping you achieve a solid base layer quicker, ie. are you painting your dudes grey as their primary colour? Or for coverage ie. priming black so you don't get a spot of light colour in any recesses. Personally I like to prime white and do a quick nasty black wash to get the recesses, or prime black and do a zenithal of lighter colour

NTA but I know two people who are 40+ get mad at people using 3d printed terrain and refuse to play with anything 3d printed. One even got mad at someone in his own playgroup for buying a 3d printer and started printing terrain. I'll never understand the logic, they've spent a fortune on GW terrain and its their right but getting mad at people who get functional equivalent of the stuff for dirt cheap is beyond me. Maybe makes them feel bad I don't know.

Either painting a dakkarig bright 1980s eyerape Freebooterz colors or getting a Squat on ebay and setting him up so he's shooting a primaris with his heavy weapon (or recreate the 'squat last stand' scene but without the land train since they don't exist).

I thought of something more expensive like grabbing AK swamp gel and building a mini diorama of Catachans (I would have to get catachans) attacked by 2004 cold ones (which I do have) along a swampy riverbank. I thought of lizardmen with guns or plague monks without faces counting as Hrud but every Ebay listing for Used Old lizardmen to run as Space Slanni (3rd edition necron codex) is, of course, overpriced for what it is. As always.

Votann should have just been Old Squats but upgraded and then all the other stuff they had as Squats+
The Hearthkyn do not work as basic infantry. GW has this obsession with trying to make space marines 2, 3 and 4. Just give people what they want. Use the term Squat. Use the term exo-armour.
>>
>>98618507

>>

>>
>>98618555

>>
>>98618507
>GW has this obsession with trying to make space marines 2, 3 and 4.
>Just give people what they want.
The only way GW knows "what people want" is sales numbers. Marines sell well, ergo they try to make everything else as similar as possible to try and strike gold (monetarily) again. Do I agree with it? No, but that's how it looks on the surface to me.

You also have to remember that GW is extremely risk-averse, and the fact that the original squats flopped so hard that their name became the in-group slang term for something going away, despite this removal happening before most 40k players were even alive to be aware of it; I hope I don't have to explain why these two things are related.
How much of the Squats being unpopular originally is down to their original "archetypal fantasy" being too similar to other factions (ie Orks for "space bikers") is not something I can speak on, but I can't imagine it not having an affect.

I'll rephrase how I described Votann a few threads ago: they feel like they were designed by committee with too many "ideas guys" in the room so they're trying to do 5 different things at once and it doesn't work as a result. They also still don't have a complete range of models.
I just don't know if GW is willing to throw out space dwarfs a second time and try it again, so instead I wish for what could have been.
>>
>>98618557
I was hoping they would make primaris scaled replacements since there's a gap now
>>
>>98618560
>The only way GW knows "what people want" is sales numbers. Marines sell well, ergo they try to make everything else as similar as possible to try and strike gold (monetarily) again. Do I agree with it? No, but that's how it looks on the surface to me.
Look I'm not gonna have a 50 post argument with you, this is the reply you get, no one wants knockoff marines, the marine fanbase isn't buying SHORT not-marines, your logic is why votann are a meme niche army with no focus.
>>
I really like the space marine hover tanks but I don't wanna be a basic bitch and play space marines. Maybe I should proxy them as chaos land raiders / predators.
>>
>>98618600
You aren't even arguing with the point of mine that you quoted; I don't know why you think I'd have an argument with you if you aren't showing me that you are even going to engage with what I say in the first place.
>>
>>98618604
What is it that you like about them? I was ideally going to get a predator and they got killed a week after I got a second hand repulsor
>>
>>98618464
That image is a shit example because star wars legends had a shit load of retarded fan canon slop worse than primaris marines such as the sun crusher and yuuzhan vong, lucas also never actually cared for any of the EU books. He just gave it his approval because "it was for the fans" as he stated in an interview once.

Your still right about 40k though
>>
>>98618600
You're pretty short-sighted/blinkered anon... Plenty of die-hard dorf fanboys out there that will just consume anything dorf-like, and then they did also make them as marine-liteas possible because sales figures. Votann were a safe business decision from GW

But those were good parts. The Sun Crusher was a one-off weapon that replies on the star's own mechanics and is vulnerable enough that a glancing blow from a prototype Death Star could heavily damage it. It was a highly situational weapon depicted as deadly but uncontrollable. The Vong are also much better as an original threat than anything in Mouse Wars.

“hover” tanks don’t actually hover. they instead move via a metal cylinder on the bottom of the tank going up and down like a pogo stick. you can look at the bottom of the tank in the image I posted if you don’t believe me.

The Vong were great. They are a remainder that there is worst things lurking in the universe than the eternal conflict between Jedi and Sith. Vong are thematically more similar to Tyranids or Zerg while being asshurt over technology.
>>
>>98618698
Nigga the death star was a planet killing weapon so unusual and unreal that the rebels thought it was a planet at first and some starship near the size of an x wing casually takes a hit from its laser and has bombs that can obliterate stars destroying entire solar systems. The vong were basically just a mary sue enemy almost equal to how much chaos is wanked off in 40k that retconned palpatine and the empire by making the death star and other projects of his into weapons to fight them.

Not a single bit of that even remotely fits with the aesthetic and world of the first 6 movies.

In the old EU, planetary bombardment can Exterminatus or close. But planets have shields that can deflect. Alderaan had high tier shields. The Death Star wasn't just destroying, it was saying nothing can save you.

OT implicitly had too. The Hoth shield could deflect any attack from multiple Star Destroyers. In the EU that was a rickety not top-of-the-line shield and could manage that.

I need to work on my pile of shame. My metaI sisters army I only have 2 out of 5 canonesses painted, hospitaller and celestine are just primed. And I got like 60 infantry painted but I think I have like 30 infantry still left. Plus my 10 Rhino based vehicles are just basecoated and nothing more. And my two metal pengines are also unpainted.

Really nice work on that celestine.
>>
>>98618735
Sun Crusher flat out can't kill the Death Star at all, the big scary sun-killing torpedoes only do about 11% damage at best, and getting hit by just the fringe of the beam fucked it up.

Death Star >>> Sun Crusher

Being tiny is about all the Sun Crusher has going for it, even before you account for how if the Death Star had actually been a prototype and not a skeleton fusion core + superlaser they could just tractor it in place and smack it with the superlaser head on.
