The colour really only matters in helping you achieve a solid base layer quicker, ie. are you painting your dudes grey as their primary colour? Or for coverage ie. priming black so you don't get a spot of light colour in any recesses. Personally I like to prime white and do a quick nasty black wash to get the recesses, or prime black and do a zenithal of lighter colour
