>Flavor is free>OK I want my character to envelope their sword in acid>Here is the lore reason they are able to do that>OK>Does my sword do acid damage?>No. Flavor is free. It interacting with anything is not
>>98618185Yes, of course. If you want a benefit, invest the resources.
Flavor and mechanics are one and the same. Otherwise you end up with a dndogshit clone
>>98618198>tg's worst troll spams his customary shitpost
>>98618185>>OK I want my character to envelope their sword in acid>>Does my sword do acid damage? What sword?
>>98618204He's been pretty busy.https://archive.4plebs.org/tg/search/text/dndogshit/
>>98618185>Flavor is free>OK I want my character to envelope their sword in acid>Here is the lore reason they are able to do that>OK>Does my sword do acid damage?>No, you coated it in citric acid. If you want an acid strong enough to do damage, then it doesn't count as flavour acid.
>>98618185A game mechanic is that your sword does extra damage. Flavor is WHY it does extra damage. You're the retard who thinks free refills means free cups.
>>98618185>>OK I want my character to envelope their sword in acid>>Here is the lore reason they are able to do that>>OKNot how it works. An acid sword is not mechanically identical to a regular sword. You can choose the flavor of your sword to be anything within the parameters of a sword, but you can't add further significant capabilities. Your sword can be single-edged, double-edged, with a guard or without, its hilt could function as a flute or contain a space to hold small notes or trinkets, really just about anything as long as it doesn't alter its core statistics without some further cost (even something like adding minor utility or exotic decorations could warrant having to have spent some extra gold on it). It's really that simple. You can say your fire attack spell looks like summoned birds made of fire flying towards your target, but you can't make the birds fly around corners or otherwise home in on a target unless the fire attack spell does that normally.
>>98618280How about macuahuitl sword?
>>98618185what kind of acid
>>98618343Lysergsäurediethylamid
>>98618204>corporate slave thinks anyone who makes fun of his favorite corporate brand is the same personKeep on seething son.
>>98618351oh... well probably oranges would taste better if you want flavor...
>>98618280Your example that you cant even have your fireball be flaming birds really just proves my point. You cant ever have your flavor actually expressed. Its only allowed if it wouldn't change anything. There are a million things flaming birds can do. They can scout. They can be summoned before combat and follow you around. They can be distracted by seeds. They can reproduce. They can act as a traveling light source. They can lift small items. Why bother thinking about flavorful ways to do something if you are forbidden from having it interact with anything?
>>98618257
>>98618185You want it to interact with something? It damages your sword and runs down the blade and burns your hand.
>>98618320Like everything, subject to GM approval. Some games might put more importance on minute characteristics of weapons like weapon durability, while others may be more broad and relaxed and group many different types of swords and sword-like objects into a single category. For a game like D&D, I could see a DM giving a macuahuitl similar stats to a sword, but there's plenty of design room to make it more mechanically interesting considering the unique properties of using what's essentially a club studded with obsidian blades. Something like it dealing an extra +1 damage on the first attack made with it, but then acquiring a "Chipped" status and losing that damage bonus and requiring 1GP worth of obsidian stone and 10 minutes of repair work to remove that chipped status. It could even do -1 damage in its Chipped state to reflect its general inferiority to steel weaponry, but that kind of penalty would probably change it from being something players might actually want to use to something largely worthless. Perhaps that would be the state of cheaper versions, while a true "masterwork" macuahuitl would not get the -1 damage when its Chipped. There's plenty of other ways to make one mechanically distinct and more interesting, but if the player just wants it to have identical stats to a steel sword and the DM is fine with that, then it's unnecessary to overcomplicate things.
>>98618374Flavor is flavor, not mechanics. You can make your fireball blue, you can change the accompanying loud explosive sound to a loud fart, you can come up with a million ways to change the FLAVOR of a spell without changing its MECHANICS. You can even have the fireball explode into a burst of mindless, bird-shaped flames if you want an avian theme for some reason, since that would be mechanically identical to a fireball. If you want your parade of flaming birds that can scout and exist for longer than a single instant and otherwise have mechanical differences from a fireball, those mechanical differences must be balanced. It would be its own unique spell and not merely a re-flavored one and need to go through a much lengthier approval process in order to make sure that it's not overpowered. >Why bother thinking about flavorful ways to do something if you are forbidden from having it interact with anything? You're encouraged to think up flavorful ways to modify your spells, weapons, and other character options, but within the mechanical capacity of what they're modifying. It's pretty stupid and entirely unimaginative of you to act like a five-year-old on the playground and want your "flavor" to actually mean "overpowered bullshit". Your teleport spell leaves behind a cloud of harmless sparks? That's generally fine, that's pretty much JUST flavor.Your teleport spell leaves behind an explosion with damaging flames? That's not just flavor and a more powerful spell, and needs to be balanced accordingly with either a higher spell level or some other cost/drawback.
>>98618185Flavor in this context is something that explains and colors the game but does not influence mechanically. I could reflavor my goblin wizard to actually be a little green space alien who crashed landed on this wacky planet. They have a little computer bracer that can do things like summon a giant hardlight projection of a giant hand, make silent holograms that require 10 minutes of coding in, replicate nutrient rich meal pellets like the star trek food replicators, use create a weak tractor beam to move small objects around. All of that is flavor. Mechanically the character just cast Bigby's Hand, silent image, goodberry, and prestidigitation. In the game I receive no mechanical benefit from any of this. The spells work identically. They do the same things. They're just described differently. Instead of preparing spells the character has to load up scripts or reprogram the device. The spell slots are due to energy limitations. I can't say that "oh because the battery is always recharging I get a spell slot back every few hours instead of all of them after a long rest" no, changes to the mechanics are not free. The explanation of why the mechanics exist is all that changes. "The device needs to go into low power mode for 6 hours to recharge. It uses its own timer and can't be turned back on early." All of that is free. You don't get better or more spells or extra damage for that. Any benefits are a gift from the DM and not free.
>>98618498usually I assume shitposters like OP are video game brained, but how many fucking video games are there where you can get cosmetic changes that have no impact on gameplay. Everyone understands this concept.
>>98618498>you can change the accompanying loud explosive sound to a loud fartnuh uh that's overriding physics
>>98618185Was there a point to this thread?
>>98618524no mechanical difference on gameplay means it's only flavor. The fart noise is limited to the same level of volume as the explosion.
>>98618554>no mechanical difference on gameplayYou don't know that.
>>98618547a trip to flavortown
>>98618185I've got a flavor for you, OP.
>>98618559can you be retarded somewhere else?
Game where metaphysics affect rules requires that GM actually thinks how the thing would work, what resources it would cost and use HARD NO when metaphysics don't agree with what player is trying to do. Other wise it will just turn in to a story telling without much point.
>>98618185You have described a mechanical choice, not flavor. Flavor is something aesthetic with no mechanical impact whatsoever.>I want to make my character's fire sword have green fireThat's flavor>I want my character's fire sword to do acid damageIs not flavor.
>>98618185It's more like>My Acidmancer has the Acid Strike feature>instead of corrosive fangs I want to fluff it as coating a sword in acidic runes>Yeah sure, sounds cool
>>98618524It would have to be the same or similar dB, but the sound could really be just about anything you could want it to be, because the question of balance is primarily whether it alerts nearby creatures to your presence. A fireball that sounds like a loud quack may be slightly more powerful than a traditional fireball since it would be considerably more confusing and the goblins might bring their anti-giant-duck gear instead of buckets of water when they rush over to investigate, but that mechanical difference is small enough to be largely negligible. You couldn't "flavor" your Fireball to be silent, because the spell description explicitly says it creates a "low roar" and making it instead be silent would increase its power considerably, since you could clear one room without alerting the one next to it.
>>98618508>I could reflavor my goblin wizard to actually be a little green space alienYeah but than your character wouldn't speak Goblin and would probably have very skills in certain things related to tech while having negative scores related to things like culture. Also your universal translator only knows common for some reason. And your "power cells" are recharged with potions that were designed to restore spell slots. They also have vocal components material components, are affected by anti-magic zones and other things designed specifically to affect magic. Wizards can identify your alien tech using an arcane roll. Think about it. You picked this example YOURSELF. It was your idea of a GOOD example And it doesn't work at all. Those are just the examples I thought of right now. I'm sure there are countless more.
>>98618587Don't bother. He's being autistic about it and insists that because you change how a thing looks or sounds then it should have a butterfly effect on it mechanically. In a magical setting. With wizards and shit. That you play with your imagination.
>>98618498It's a real shame a detailed explanation like this is being wasted on a disingenuous shitpost.
>>98618579Nu DND can't even decide what it's metaphysics are. I'm pretty sure Monks don't even use Ki. Divine magic seems to run based on whether or not the user has a high opinion of their own moral actions and the Gods are basically just batteries for them.
>>98618498>you can change the accompanying loud explosive sound to a loud fartYou mean like this? Hey >>98618185, guess what?
>>98618608>then your character wouldn't speak goblin>they'd have certain skillsyeah so I would give them those skills and I'd write down the languages they speak. You know you can do that right? That's how you make a character's backstory. If you wanted your human fighter could be a foreigner who doesn't speak any local human languages but does know a dialect of dwarvish as a second language. So you write down on your sheet the made up language name for wherever the fuck your human fighter is from, and then dwarvish. DMs can veto shit sure but they don't mind that kind of thing. >And it doesn't work at allit works if you're not a retard who has never played a TTRPG before. Like I don't even need to list off every retarded example you gave. He's got a negative in cultural knowledge? Yeah so do most wizards because they need to touch grass. If I wanted to take points in some bit of knowledge then he watched a fucking documentary his people made when last visiting the planet, or maybe studying their culture is his literal job and purpose for being there. Because that's how how it FUCKING works:>the skills are the game mechanic>the flavor is why they have those skills>my human fighter has a skill points in historical knowledge (mechanic)>because he likes to read books about it (flavor)
>>98618623But I don't want a fart fireball. I want acidic swords on my fighter because of [character lore].Also the fart fireball isn't even allowed to smell bad and thus debuff them.
>>98618701Then you ask the DM permission to have an acid sword that does acid attack. Mechanical changes are not free. Only flavor is free. Acid damage on your sword is a gift from the DM, painting our sword green is flavor.
>>98618612>>98618616I've actually encountered many players that had genuine trouble understanding the difference. To be fair, most of them were less than twelve-years old, but there's also times where older players really wanted to stretch what "flavor" meant, and always to their advantage. Stuff like trying to trade in Darkvision for Tremorsense or one person who wanted to use Hold Person as Hold Heart (ie. Instant Death).
>>98618699You didn't address the guy's other issues which are far more damning. You went after the softest targets (things that don't interact with combat). As a DM I'd veto your character and tell you that you are either going to play your goblin wizard as a goblin wizard or leave the table. Mai flavor players are a menace.
>>98618723that's just the most retarded form of powergaming. Where they treat the shit like finding video game exploits speedrunners use. "No you see since it says it takes X amount of time to pass an object from one person to another, then if we chain 100 peasants together and have them pass a metal ball it will move at the Y speed by the end which is enough force to break a stone wall!"
>>98618578not really, no
>>98618741I did address them when I said "I don't need to because they can all be explained the same way". Which just shows you didn't read before replying.>as a DMbut you're not one and have never been one. Which is why you're saying this retarded shit that makes no sense to anyone who HAS played a game before.Which is further evidenced by this retarded thing you just said>mai flavor playersIn a world where GMs beg their players to at least add some salt to their food, you complain about players overseasoning?
>>98618741NTA, but there's solutions to every concern, even with that level of dramatic flavor change.Mostly because we're talking about alien technology and magic, which gives a lot of leeway. The DM would have to work with the player and really bend over backwards at times (Material components could be flavored as specific chips he has to prepare beforehand that burn out with each use and need to be refashioned/repaired, his device would actually have to work on magical principles and thus interact with magic and he'd have to be able to convert magical scrolls into his own technomagical scripting language, he has to be bonded with his bracer in a fashion that makes spells/items that affect him and his magic actually affect the bracer [such as if a monster tried to drain his spell slots], and all sorts of other little annoying things), but it's all possible with a little consideration and finessing and a lot of technobabble/a wizard did it. I personally would hesitate to allow such a dramatic sort of reflavoring, but if the player who requested it was a hot girl and she said she'd let me fill her goblin holes with alien goo if I let her play her little alien, I'd at least consider coming up with some ideas on how it could work.
>>98618751Retarded power gamers are the prides reason why I’d be wary as a GM for anyone trying to argue “muh flavor”, if only because you give them so much as a single inch and they try it on every single thing they think they can get away with.
>>98618215Unironically less cancerous than Puckee
>>98618751it feels like these players want a video game and not an RPG
>>98618805I'd argue the opposite, largely because the only reason puckee is even noticed is because the rate of posting on this board has slowed down so much that necrobumping threads more than a day old is possible. Back in the day, we'd get dozens of people making repeated thread types every day, and most would disappear in a few hours instead of lingering for weeks, and it would just be part of the natural churn and flow of the board. There also doesn't seem to be anything genuinely malicious about that guy, just something oddly autistic. The guy who jumps into any new thread as early as he can to make a shitpost about D&D however is just a troll, and contributes nothing to the board but negativity.
>>98618802I mean that's kind of self evident in how they talk about flavor. And you can always veto anything they do so I wouldn't shut down flavor to avoid the risk of that. If they don't respect that DM can veto that shit and make them walk it back, that's them having to learn the hard way. >>98618825Mainly it's autism. They treat a social game like a videogame and get mad at the fact that it doesn't work like that. DM says it doesn't work, so it doesn't work. Any argument otherwise is a more extreme form of rules lawyering. And I stomp that out with how much I butcher rulebooks with house rules and homebrews before the game even starts.
>>98618795Yeah trying to make flavor go against mechanics is stupid and just creates lots of work for the DM. Either you need to change the mechanics (and the sword now deals acid damage instead of slashing) or you need to have the player write multiple paragraphs for their head canon about how alien technology works with every single game mechanic that a wizard could ever interact with, and constantly rewrite the lore while consulting those paragraphs. You'd basically need to offer sex to make it work.Flavor isn't free because mechanics and pre-established lore interact with it. You can't have 6 guys running around who have their own head canon version of the game.
>>98618839No it's the complete opposite. 'Have you not tried playing D&D' once in random threads is ignorable. 6 or 7 threads up at a time is not.
>>98618912Me responsible for at least 4 of those threads
>>98618185The proper response is to call the offending player gay, and to yeet them.
>>98618912Those 6 or 7 threads would not be a problem if the board was faster. It's generally unsustainable for one lone person to bump threads indefinitely if they died overnight without a bump like they used to. They're a symptom, not a cause of the disease, and the main disease gripping /tg/ right now is its general hostility and negativity that are leading to a consistent exodus of posters that make it slower and slower. You'd notice less puckee threads if the board was healthier and faster. On the other side of things, the troll would make more posts complaining about D&D if there were more people making threads about RPGs. The former is a symptom that disappears when the disease is cured, the latter is part of the disease and gets worse when you try to administer anything but a total cure.
>>98618547>Innovative tactics are warranted>Given the limitations of traditional tools, more out-of-the-box tactics should be considered. One such tactic would aim at gradually making these boards less interesting for their users.>One way to achieve this would be to regularly post content that looks genuine (using the right language, imagery, etc.) yet is meaningless – this would dilute the message of these boards and make their threads uninteresting, thereby reducing their attractiveness and sense of community.>Recent developments in artificial intelligence enabling researchers to automatically generate credible extremist sentences make such a tactic cheap and easy to implement. From 2021's 'Mining the Chans.' I have long suspected that most of /tg/'s traffic is basically just this; botted noise to... idk. Fuck with a niche hobby forum?
>>98618564Is it pepperoni?
>>98618769NTA but is it so unusual for dm's in your circle to veto completely out of setting choices? If you came to me wanting to play a little green alien id be like "not in this fantasy setting, but im happy to run a sci fi game too if you want, preferably using d20 modern" As a DM my i prioritise my enjoyment as much as the players in order to keep myself interested and engaged, and a cohesive setting is essential to that.
>>98618969No.
>>98618795Most of the problems boil down to "you just need more flavor to support it, so if you like doing that there's no problem" or "it depends on the setting"Like sure if the DM is actually taking material components seriously, a thing I have actually never seen a DM want to do (it's like keeping track of arrows, DMs hate it more than players), then it takes three seconds to come up with flavor to explain it. Which what the whole issue with what that guy was saying. "You need to make more flavor to explain this flavor" But flavor is free. It's only as limited as your imagination. So don't make an alien wizard if you're lacking in imagination, but the whole purpose of this thought experiment is that you CAN in fact make one, it's possible, and it does not require any mechanical changes. >>98618903If the player wants to write multiple paragraphs, let them. The entire point of the alien example is that it's extreme, but despite being extreme it doesn't necessarily require any mechanical changes. You can reflavor something into a whole different genre without having to change the numbers. It's not about it being easy. It's about how you can call your magic missiles phaser blasts but you don't get to do extra damage.
>>98618839Puckee frequently bumped his threads to the day 7 autosage, Puckee also frequently had 3-6 threads up at all times aside from spamming his slop on the art and draw threads
>>98618987It's not unusual but he wasn't talking about a DM vetoing it, he was making up nonsense about players over flavoring being a regular problem he needs invent a meme term to describe. A DM vetoing a character concept for not fitting the setting or tone or just being too weird is understandable. I actively encourage and practically beg players to do shit like that, but that's just me. The main thing that guy was saying is that I didn't dissect every issue point by point, when every one of the issues is resolved the same no brainer way of the flavor is shaped by the mechanics and not the other way around.
>>98618971>I have long suspected that most of /tg/'s traffic is basically just this; botted noise to... idk. Fuck with a niche hobby forum? It gets weirder when you look at posting stats right after Nov.4 2024. 3k+ less posts immediately and didn't climb back up for a whole month.
>>98618998>If the player wants to write multiple paragraphs, let them. At that point you could have just said "Your sword is acid that does cutting damage" Which kind of shows how yeah. "Flavor is free" is stupid.
>>98618185Yes, another good reason to play a game that has what you want on offer, instead of agonizing over a system in which you have to beg a DM for what you want.
>>98619017did you really just quote a paragraph you didn't even read to reply with a non sequitur?
>>98619020>other game systems don't have DMsthese retards aren't even pretending they don't only place videogames now.
>>98619010>he was making up nonsense about players over flavoring being a regular problem he needs invent a meme term to describe.Fair, my bad.Id be Interested to hear how your games go, ive run some whacky "everything goes" type games but in general I really struggle without very grounded set ups, stuff like no mixed clan partys in l5r, no "good" evil races etc. Maybe im boring, but I believe there is infinitely enough diversity to be had in minor background choices and specialities to keep a group interesting. With an ideal party looking like a military unit or regular workplace, consistent goals, appearance, outlook and experience but with unique backgrounds and upbringings from within the same culture.Of course this culture could be anything from little green men to cyborg pirate ninjas, as long as its consistent across the party.
>>98619007>Puckee also frequently had 3-6 threads up at all timesCloser to 10-12 at times, puckee spammed 10+ threads early this year and they stuck around for dayshttps://desuarchive.org/tg/thread/97973351/#97976711
>>98619028Games are run by Game Masters.
>>98619007Back when Day-7 autosage was implemented was already when /tg/ was in dire straits. They put that into play because they thought it would help alleviate some of the thread stagnation the board was seeing, but that was another case of trying to fix a symptom without actually attempting to cure the underlying disease. The disease is that this board no longer offers people as many reasons to come here, particularly because it's few somewhat unique benefits (like anonymity and relatively lax moderation) have been abused by the worst people on this board to create a bizarrely hostile environment.Puckee admittedly isn't the best poster. But, to newfags, the sort of people that we NEED to bring back here, they might not even realize there's anything odd about his threads. But, they can immediately feel the unbridled hostility that comes from our trolls, even to an outsized degree because the trolls do their best to make themselves seem more numerous than they actually are. There's people here going on about how we need to gatekeep this place or how bad wrongthink is and how the enemy is anyone who doesn't share all of their own opinions, but those are exactly the sort of people who've lead /tg/ into a downward spiral where only people who are immune to shitposting like Puckee seem to be able to thrive. We need to try and make this place more welcoming, even to people who's opinions we might not agree with, as long as they're willing to let us and each other have their own opinions in turn. Ie. discuss the games you like, ignore the games you don't like, do your best to foster discussion and encourage people to come here and post without harassment. Or, at minimum, make your harassment actually entertaining so even that brings people here. Getting really tired of our trolls being so fucking bad at the one thing they do all day.
>>98619063Or referees, keepers, handlers, storytellers etc. Most people start with D&D and get accustomed to the term DM, but gm is just one more in a long list. No cause for you to start acting rightously incorrect about inconsiquential shit.
>>98619139You forgot Tard-Wrangler.And Cat-Herder.Babysitter. Gamewhore. Man-behind-the-Curtain. Dark Lord, Mastermind, Opponent, Voice of the Wind. Daddy, Master, Boss, and Bossman. The MC, the Master of Ceremonies, the Microphone Controller, as well as the Mic Rula.Mr. Make-it-Stop.
>>98618351>get hit for 1d8+Str slashing damage >start tasting the colors
>>98618508You'd get the drawback of not being welcome among goblins as one of their own, being instantly recognisable as the weird, one-of-a-kind creature that you are, ruining your ability to engage in certain types of subterfuge, etc.
>>98619057Well the main thing is it just comes back to how my imagination works, and it's one of those 'never shuts off' types. It's not that it's anything goes, but there's two main parts to it:>when a player takes an active role in world building that can hook them and invest them in the setting better.>creativing is best when you have things to bounce off of or forced limits. When you take an art class it's harder to just come up with an idea, but you get more creative when there's an assigned topic. I like being creative with concepts and I'm the improv style of GM. I know players usually need to be pressured to flesh out their ideas, and my way of doing that is to push for wackier shit than I know they'll actually do. If I get my way and I can trick a player into playing as a custom race they made up or pulled from somewhere else, I get to integrate that into the setting, which is fun, and figure out how to make it balanced mechanically, which is also fun.
>>98619063>instead of begging a DM you're begging a GMyeah you kind of missed the point there retard.
>>98619188>goblins, inexplicably, dig the alien's weird vibes and welcome him into their homes after he reveals that in the distant future on a far-away planet, humans will eventually start drawing pictures of them with big titties
>>98619188>You'd get the drawback of not being welcome among goblins as one of their own, Goblins are like Brits, they hate even people from their neighboring villages, so even if he was just playing another goblin he wouldn't exactly be missing out on the chance to sing kumbaya around the campfire.
>OK I want my character to envelope their sword in acid>Here is the lore reason they are able to do that>OK>Does my sword do acid damage?>Yeah sure, you do 1 bonus acid damage when your attack hits
>>98619219>>98619199>>98619188>youre a really weird-lookin mate>but you should se me cousin, now he had a real stinker of a facethey then treat the alien-goblin as a goblin
>>98619188Could be, but that's just another case of "you can solve this with more flavor or else make the right choices when creating the character to support the flavor."Examples:>the alien actually does look nearly identical to goblins and he studied them enough to blend in and actually lived partially among the local tribe for a time>in character creation you take the mechanic hit that goblins don't recognize him as one of them and maybe he doesn't even know their language, and if he feels he needs a cover story he can just say he's from a different tribe far away. Either is possible. But the point of the example is that it's an extreme reflavoring that doesn't necessarily change anything mechanically. Mechanic changes could make the concept less complicated to play, but there isn't a hole in the concept that can't be filled with more flavor. Which as established, is free.
>>98619193>how my imagination works.I envy people with free form imaginations that easily intergrate new ideas.Ive got to start with a solid concept and then build off that logically, eg "aliens invaded rome in the year 150ad, they were defeated by sheer numbers and now the empire is under Marcus Aurelius and features mecha, power armor and psionics" I can build a coherrent world with that, but if a player then asks to play as a magical ancient Egyptian anubian jackal man, It completely throws my creativity because magic and animal people dont fit the planned brief.Same would go for OP's acid sword in a fantasy setting, id need to know where it came from, its historic significance, if it requires a specific fencing technique to use and its current legal status. Otherwise just having it exist would piss me off to no end and I wouldnt want to run the game.
>>98619232There's an ADD element to it, but yeah I've got the type of imagination where when I'm in the flow it feels more like I'm describing something I've seen than that I had any control over imagining it. Years back I wrote terrible fanfiction in high school and had one that got semi-popular for a week. I got a shit ton of DMs on the forum it was on from people who had "character ideas" that they would "let" me use. All phrased as if it was a precious commodity. Their OCs were all terrible, but they viewed creating characters as a very difficult thing. Which was a harsh contrast to me because my constantly daydreaming never shutting off imagination never has to think up characters. They just kind of show up. Like I don't need to sculpt them from clay, but if I make a stage they'll walk out onto it.>if a player then asks to play as a magical ancient Egyptian anubian jackal manI'd veto that too if it doesn't fit the setting, but most of the time I leave things open enough that I could make that fit, but it's give and take and if players want something that specific they need to accept I'll take creative liberties of my own. Like why not have a race of dog headed people. Why not say this one is from far away but there's also some much more different looking tribes less far away, so people in the region have an understanding of them and can understand this extreme foreigner in that context. I might even swap an existing faction's race in the setting to be those much fluffier dog people. This is fun world building to me.>Same would go for OP's acid sword as much as I say I'm encouraging players to be creative, it's a trap. Deals with the DM are like deals with fae. You get your silly special item, your shallowly thought out acid sword. But you aren't ready for the lore implications I'll shackle you with. What curse does it carry, what fate does it force on you, what original owner wants it back? That's what I get in the bargain.

Here's a house rule: You can have flavor affect mechanics when it is to your disadvantage.

And than you get some flavorless sprinkles that you can put ontop in whatever order you want. You are mistaking the 12 toppings and 4 fudges for infinite flavor because you are just so gosh darn amazed that you can arrange the flavorless sprinkles to look like anything from a t-rex to a happy face. OP is saying that the sprinkles don't actually matter outside your head. And by the time you start eating they disappear anyway.

>>98619404Sure, in some games. Especially games with advantages/disadvantages systems often have some that apply to characters so you can deliberately make a discriminated or bigoted character. It's less common to be explicit in d&d style games, but applying a modifier to cha-rolls for being "out-group" in whatever context would fit well."I try to flirt with X", "Well, he doesn't like dwarves so take a -4" is a perfectly reasonable take.

>>98621259Depends on location. It's rare in some areas and common in others, and is not a common trade good due to its weight and limited utility in societies that can forge steel. It's actually listed as a gemstone for 10gp, but that's probably only for polished and prepared stones of the highest quality, and not just raw stone found by the ton. Even so, I think that in a region with limited volcanic activity and still reliant on people and animals to transport materials, 1 gp is a fair price for about a pound of low quality raw obsidian, and most of that pound would end up being discarded in the process of shaping the blades.

>>98618508Well?
>>98626136that post literally described how you would just "play as a space alien" by reskinning a comparable race and class. Reskinning/reflavoring crap in TTRPGs is the most basic thing. Whenever I see people genuinely complaining that something specific isn't included when adding it in is so basic it wouldn't even be called homebrewing, I just assume they're a nogamer trying to bait. There are autistic children out there who don't see their favorite historical broadsword type in the game's default weapons list and they actually need to buy a whole new book of expanded weapons to find it, when the numbers that define it mechanically are the same as the standard basic 'broadsword' in the core rulebook. They could have just picked the broadsword and described it being a different shape. And if they want a special snowflake mechanic they think the sword should get, they can just ask their GM.

It devalues cool shit in-game. “You just get an acid sword for no effort but there’s no effect” implies that if another player wanted to actually do something similar to their weapon it would either1- not be permitted as this effect has been established as purely flavor 2- cost something, but now we have to justify in-game why one cool acid sword works and the other doesn’t (really robbing the player who works to acquire functional acid sword)3- just give the other player a functional acid sword as well, which now effectively tells the entire table that anyone can just ask for any item they want and get it, and ruining all the fun of having loot to begin with.Value is real and if you ignore it you destroy it, it’s basic economics.
